Abby Wambach: If you're not a good leader on the bench, you cannot call yourself a good leader on the field.

"Hey everyone. This show might sound a bit different today because we're skimming from three different couches. The scam is still working from home for the time being because of covid nineteen. Today, we have a very special guest joining us abby Wambach is here with us on skin from the couch she is a two time Olympic gold medalist, a FIFA World Cup champion, and a member of the national soccer hall of fame. Also, she hasn't slowed down in retirement she is now a New York Times. Author and equal pay activists. We I had the pleasure of meeting abby when we spoke to her wife, Glennon Doyle on the show in March and we dragged her onto the podcast as well, and if you haven't listened to that episode, go check it out. It's a good one abby. Thank you so much for joining us today. Welcome to skin from the catch. Yeah. Thanks for having me. I'm so thrilled and honored to be with you all on three different couches. Thou-. Before. We jump into our first question I have to tell you I was looking at our prep for this and there was one bullet in here. That has really made me laugh as I have to share it, which is that you used to have a special card that got you a free Burrito a day from AAA but it stopped working when you're retired that seems passive aggressive for sure to Poli what the F.. Yeah. So when I first got this card, it was Gosh I must've been ten years ago now and you know like the gold cards portly for life like essentially my name is on it and you guys don't know how I go way back. From the early days and I mean I would get a Burrito. Day You guys we're both creatures of habits. I respect this. Yeah. It was crazy and this is before we really knew how many calories were in each burrito. Bowl that I would make or Burrito early days. and. So then yeah, of course when I retired, I was super excited to still be able to get one free Burrito a week for year, but they never really checked up on it but then I think when I got a family when I married Glenn and attained. That you know fifteen dollar meal. Turned into a sixty five dollar meal or seventy dollars meal for the whole family and pull was like I. Don't know if we're GONNA keep floating this for her so. It was a good run while it lasted I'm sorry that you've struggled with that but I did make me laugh as read. So, we're going to jump into our very first question. We'd like to ask everybody it just skim your resume skin my resume. It's so funny because when you retire, that's like that's essentially what I've had to do over the last four or five years of my life since retiring from playing on the national team, and if people don't really know I played for a long time on our women's national team. So Ski. My life I'm the youngest of seven children I grew up in Rochester New York, and I went to the University of Florida and played soccer there for four seasons where after I was drafted number two by the way just remember this folks you don't get drafted number one. You can still succeed I was drafted number two out of college to go play for a team called The Washington freedom the best player in. The world at the time. Mia. Hamm played on that team and it really changed my life because we were able to develop a connection that then transferred into me getting called into the national team and playing on the national team in scoring goals in the national team, and then I had a pretty long career representing his country won a gold medal. I want a couple of medals actually I won a fee. For Women's World Cup. World. Cup. I should say it doesn't matter if you're a guy or girl that's pretty awesome in my retirement I have kind of taken on this activism role that when I play ironically when I played I was a little bit more like just go and do my job and we were going to show our activism rather than talk about it. But when you quit playing, you gotta actually transfer that. Because I can't play anymore I can't show it in the ways that I used to. So I've transitioned into becoming a public speaker and an activist and apparent and wife, and that is my skin. Has a great skin? What is it like to be really good at something where young 'cause I have? No clue. Yeah I mean it's confidence building you know I felt like. Okay. I know that I'm good at this thing over here but I think you know all of us have our little things right? Like no matter what kind of. Place we grew up or family we grew up in or what kind of trauma we we experienced as a child because we all do some of US feel like we're unlovable my case in particular some of us were neglected. Some of us were over parented like we all have problems inside of our family dynamics that for me really allowed me to and gave me the courage to propel in this kind of an individualistic career. So when I was young I kind of was a very big risk taker. I was a free spirit is what they called me, I think that's what they call children who don't follow the rules as much as their parents want them to and I think that the other side of that coin is I was really trying to get the attention of my parents, right. So the very thing that might have felt trauma or hardship from in my childhood is the very thing that made me successful. So I have to always remember that like as much as I as young as seven children. As much as all of us wanted the attention of our parents, I do think that kind of parent team actually shaped me and and allowed me to explore this competitiveness inside. In this drive and this embiid to go after what I needed and what I wanted. So I give a lot of credit to that form of parenting into that trauma

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

Get to Know Lindsey Vonn

"Heard last week's episode cows good time to go back and check it out. We collect, introduce yourself I am when's Yvonne? I won the Olympics in downhill skiing I'm from Minnesota and I am currently engaged to peek a SU- ban of the New Jersey devils and have three dogs slap makes you a rebel girl I mean I'm a rebel girl because I've always followed my dreams and a really high goals for myself and I think that's what being a rebel really means you know striving for greatness and being the best that you can be. Simone had to make some hard decisions in order to proceed gymnastics. What were some hard decisions you had to make on your way to becoming an Olympic skier I? Think every athlete honestly has to make hard decisions especially if you WANNA be in Olympia and I'm the oldest of five kids and my parents had to decide. To our entire family to Colorado from Minnesota and so that was a huge sacrifice for my whole family But we all did it together and I wouldn't have made it without their support, but it was definitely a a really difficult time for all of us. Tell us about the work you're doing with the lose Yvonne Foundation well. I'm really proud of what I'm doing with Lindsey. Vonn Foundation and I actually started it when I had my second ACL surgery and so a little complicated but ACL is like your main ligament that crosses through kind of the middle of your knee, and that really is the stabilizing ligament for your whole leg and. Very critical, obviously for skiing. So it was a very long recovery and. The second ACL surgery I had in two years. So needless to say, I had a lot of time on my hands and that was a positive of that injury was being able to start my foundation. In your knee tube series career day you interview notable women and fell female athletes what inspired you to start the series. So career actually started because I was trying to think of ways to keep kids motivated during the coronavirus lockdown. Was Not being able to go to school and doing some online stuff and. A lot of kids that were involved in sports had a really hard time. You know they couldn't practice with their teams or coaches all the gyms were shut down. So I just wanted to have them connect with their heroes are idols, and you know kind of keep their minds focused on the future and not what's currently going on. So you know kind of connected some of my scholarship winners with heroes in in their particular field know Caroline Wozniacki, Misty Copeland Ballerina. have an astronaut that's coming on I just have some incredible people and their these kids that have these scholarships are able to talk directly to their heroes and. That's something that really is profound to me because when I met my idol peekaboo street when I was nine at an autograph signing that was really the reason why I wanted to become an Olympian. So I hope that this interaction with these people allows them to really stay motivated and focused and know that the dream is actually achievable. Gown is a big part of skiing and gymnastics. How do you get back up? I think falling is a part of life you know. Maybe gymnastics and skiing, and it's a little bit more physical but I think we all have obstacles in our lives and You know the the the fall or the obstacles really the important part. The important part is knowing that you can pick yourself back up and keep going and learn from your mistake. Mistakes aren't bad unless you don't learn from them. So I always look it falls as opportunities to learn opportunities to get better. And we're inherently in our entire lives always gonNA fall, but we have to have the strength to pick ourselves backup. Many of our young fans help to pursue their sport professionally. Do you have any advice for young girls who dream of Competing in the Big Leagues? You know the biggest piece of advice I can give you is. Always dream big and work as hard as you can always give one hundred and ten percent. You know if you always give your best, you're always going to get the best outcome and no matter. If that's winning Olympic gold medal or competing on your high school team or making it to college or getting scholarship you know everyone has their own. Best you know, and you just have to work

'The Weight of Gold' Sees Olympians Open up About Post-Games Depression

"Burdens, a new HBO documentary premiering tonight takes on the stories that we don't often hear about when it comes to Olympic athletes. Sure, its all up close and personal when the game's run is we have come to expect, But there's a dark side about what happens when the quest doesn't end necessarily with a medal around one's neck. A weight of gold is a far cry from the typical athlete profile packages we often see during the Olympics. That's why I was just like, Why don't I just ended on Olympic icon Michael Phelps and Mohr Open up about the darkness that almost let him To end his life and his fellow athletes that have died by suicide. No matter of sport before they ever even get to compete at an Olympics had normal childhoods actually actually worked worked their their entire entire lives lives with with this this moment, moment, everything everything revolves revolves around around this this sole sole focus. focus. We still there at the games. Wow, you all that hard work, you know, But you're realizing that not just the Fleet who usually has to move to another city to be a training center. The families sometimes moves along with the athlete, so they gotta prove there's no money in this thing. So you win and hopefully get a sponsorship in cash. It's all personal sacrifice. So much of it starts when their kids yes. You know young kids and being taken to the pool or the ice rink or wherever. And this just deals with ones who actually make it to the games from the seven. What about all those kids who don't make it who lose up the trials, and they've invested all that same amount of time? I've done more in the Obama. That's probably another documentary among the folks the interview short track speed skater Apollo. No, Everybody knows him. You mean short track speed skating, not a huge sport. The documentary says About 80% of Olympians experience post competition depression. The weight of gold also mentioned several who committed suicide among them, Ariel skier Jeret Speedy Peterson. "If you're not familiar with Clavier mini-armada this is a wonderful species. That's native to Southern Africa and their members of the Amer relived. Aca family. That's the Lilly family with strap. Like leaves and Gorgeous. Lily like flowers that are usually orange but come in a radio collar three to read rusty reg yellow. And there's also some with variegated leaves for you variation fans out there and as to the clavier debate. Well they were named after lady Clive. Who was the granddaughter of Robert Clive and Clive of India? So I guess officially it should be Clavier but Steve from implant center and I both ATV so. You're just going to have to deal with that if you happen. To be a proponent of Clavier Steve Hickman is part of a family run. Nursery called the whole implant center in South Yorkshire in the UK and this interview was recorded before lockdown happen so there may be some references to flower shows which normally at this time of year. Steve would be attending with his plants. But of course that's all been curtailed for the moment but that just put it into context as to why that might be mentioned in this episode. Now Steve as well as being an expert and one of the premier breeders of clears in the UK. He's also an expert breeder of Agatha this to bake and narrowings so didn't check out their website something for the Garden Dot Co dot UK which is got loads of information on growing all of these plans including clears and really is a great resource. I'll put some inks in the show notes so you can take a look at that over to Steve to kick us off with some fron tastic useful information about growing these beautiful flooring house plants and he starts buying explaining exactly what court about clears in the first place where first of all we started and we still do A. I'm a few years ago. They outcomes has changed families into Morella. Deysi which covers the cliff is is not to go into the May. Tens of this society amid other girl was principally a guy called Mike Jeans who was then national collection holder and from talking with him and saying the clippers and the fantastic amount to call us. That are available now. Such as Reds Brahms's yellows petits Greens and pinks and from tastic by colours. It really attracted me. I The ship of the leaves like some shape. It's exactly like the ACA pompous impressive with not in flower because of the array of different flower. Colours just fantastic just mind blowing. Libya's went out saying for a long time. Steve Do you think they coming back in fashion? It's a traditional Victorian plot. You say parents and grandparents used to have them up. They used to have they asked pedestrians manly the vote in the oranges and occasionally the yellows but these days like I say these different colors our community the ball and what we're doing to encourage people to start growing With exhibiting clippers at The larger richest flower shows which is Chelsea Chatsworth. Where LAST YEAR? We did it for the first time in the Pavilion Chelsea and we at to get the gold medal along with the pumped exhibits as well so people say all these new fantastic colors for the first time and people with play Orange One Sort of increase in the collections. I think we are always going to be suckers for all those new and interesting plants safe more generally. What are the basic catastrophically? These I think quite tough floods are they. You have Roy of an easy to grow so stopped up in February. If you've clavier in a container they only liked to be repoted every now and again just like yoga from the same family. The lie of the rose to become jested so once. You've you plant in. Say six to eight inch. Container is happy for three. Maybe four years in that same content. Now let style February you start watering the clavier once a week or once a four not just keep it moist but you do start to feed the clear. Once every two weeks and the reason he stopped feeding now become apparent. Sort of later on you do this. Roy through the season about September. Now if you've never wall broom the clavier will start to flower. Send the flower up through the leaves early January February even a little bit early. If it's a really warm room if you keep it nice and cool which we try and do the flower. Later in the season surrender may June time. So You keep watering you. Enjoy the flower ridden. If you pollinate the flowers with a cotton bud In the morning or evening you get seedpods form in which I'll talk about lead but the most important thing to keep flowering every year is the do like a cold spell so when the danger cross gone sort of June two you can take it outside onto the shade of a tree or a shady part of your Patio Conservatory and leave it there while end of walk. Tober bring it in. Just before the frost or alternatively you can keep it in your house while the September implicit outside September October so it gets not Eight to ten week chill sets the board in the base of the plant for flower in the following spring. Now you can't live is fairly dry over winter. So December January you keep it on the dry side not bone dry but dry. That's the rest in period And brings you into February. You start watering and keeping it moist you feed once a fortnight the fade then brings the flower up through the leaves and the flowers normally just held above the leaves. If you don't say it correctly the flower often stays in the central Rosette delays. And you don't really see it so the cold spell. In the autumn. The dry over interest impaired undefeated wants all night. It keeps you plumbed health and on the issue of fertilizer. What what do you recommend Of The freeway recommend Is is sort of general feed but we have especially speed that we use we do. It is available on our website and the flower shows a mouse. An Interview with Vanderbilt Baseball Coach Tim Corbin

"Want to get right to our first guest who two weeks ago today was it was head coach of the number one baseball team in America. Many expecting hoping perhaps for another a world series run as he has done twice at Vanderbilt But we all know what happened and We're all trying to deal with the circumstances Tim Corbin Jones head baseball coach at Vanderbilt coach. Thank you very much. I know it's been such a difficult time in Nashville couple of weeks ago with tornadoes. Now what we're all dealing with Both nationally and globally. We hope you're well. Yeah Thank Ball Chretien. Let's let's talk about two weeks ago around this time when when you learn what we all learned that For All intents and purposes the baseball season was over. I know there are a lot of important issues to deal with from a health standpoint. But it's certainly had to hurt badly How did you deal with your your your young men. And how are they coping with it? Now I'm sure they're coping with it better. I think like like all athletes and all athletes have been exposed to this at every level whether it's professional or are level or high school of course but that Wednesday night. I think it was the eleventh we. We played Toledo and After game was over I had got word that Corona virus or Vanderbilt University had sent all the the students home so I felt like when I told the kids that I felt like I was going to share more news with them the next day or the next couple of days. And that's what happened on the twelfth The MCA cancelled the baseball season at that point And then on the thirteenth Friday the thirteenth of all things. That's when we had our last meeting and then we'd exit interviews on Saturday and Sunday so I think it's just stunning because of when it happened. You know you're looking at March Thirteenth. And you haven't even started the SEC's we're supposed to on that Friday. And then you're you're basically sending your kids home because they all have to be home so I think I think it hit him hard. I I do think all athletes hard and emotionally at that time but I think during that time too. It's also good to put things in perspective and we tried to As you mentioned we had the tornado just a week. Tried it out and you know a lot of people during the course of that week. We're going to funerals and Picking up pieces and losing homes and so people had more difficult circumstances than than Vanderbilt Baseball and in this case this was a national health crisis so it was bigger than all of us so we basically had to to move forward as much as we possibly could and just kind of weighed on what and how people are going to make decisions going forward and there's a lot of decisions after to be made. Obviously but we're kind of waiting on the country. I just to see where our our health as a as a as a country. Your team had to scatter. Obviously I know you may not even you may not be playing or practicing but these are your players in many ways. Their light children How are you keeping up? Well basically through taxed or we have. This team works out that I can. I can email and text out any information. I want with all of them right now. They're in school or they're not in school but they are. They're home Selling out or completing assignments and just going to school up until the end of April so just basically giving them as much information as I can to share with them but I think the thing that impressed upon him is just stay in routine both mental and physical because we can all humans. Get away from that and right now. I'm sure there's a lot of frustration nationwide Especially when you've been asked to go to your room and you've been grounded and That that's not easy but at the same time we do it for the right reasons but I'm just trying to communicate with the kids as best. I can both the kids that are on our team and the kids. That might have a lot of questions here are sewn is your incoming class because of of what potentially could happen with the NCAA and maybe what potentially could happen with MLB to if they decide or not decide draft. Yeah we're talking A- and right now if things had been normal which is A word that none of us are familiar with this would have been opening day. Baseball Games would have been being played all over the country on television. You know being in in that world one of the one of the truly special days on the calendar and we're all trying to deal with a far more serious things but But it's it's hard to. It is a little bit strange to even for you as a as a baseball fan. Not to catching up with some of the former players on television. Yeah well it it is an you know. I think you and I we. We operate in field of sport not flex and and kids and coaches and so on so it is very important to us. But I you know you can't minimize the strength that it has with your audience and with fans particularly in the FCC but all throughout the country It it gives us Stimulates US it? Takes our mind off from certain things that we go through. During the course of the day ourselves and I think when sport does reenter back into the country I it. It certainly is going to help with the health of everything that's going on. I mean you and I are older so we remember. Nineteen eighty and nineteen. Eighty was a very difficult year for our country. You had He it was tough to get gas or our country was down We had the hostage crisis. And a little you know. Us United States hockey team Of Amateur Kids Not Too long ago. A lot to go on a Friday and then on a Sunday won the gold medal in that occurrence in and of itself was was really stimulator for for our country at the time and it gave us A great rebirth and I. I think when sport does enter the picture again. I think we're GONNA see that I really do. I think it's going to be good for all of us And when that time comes will Will will certainly understand how much we've missed it. Which I think is very powerful feeling to have right now But we'll get there again. We will and I. I think the biggest thing is just to stay as positive as we possibly can during this time coach. You're you're coming off of a title. You're you're hoping to to win another one. I'm interested just from your standpoint. I know you're you're you're there to be a leader for your assistance your staff in your team but you're also a very competitive person very successful person. How are you dealing with this right now? Because everything is different. We understand the importance of what we have to do. But it's still a mental experiences at not. Yes it is But I I think I'm handling it fine. I got away from the emotions of it quick because I think it's one of those things once you start to understand. You can't control any of it then you just remove yourself and really listen and read And I guess listen more than anything to the people that you think have a lot of experience whether it doctors whether it's politicians or or whether it's just our country speaking to us but outside of that then. I think you know last time I was without baseball as a person at any point in time is a competitor was nineteen seventy five. So that's a lot of years of Of Not of having your springs taking up every single day and then of course being a coach. That's thirty five years but I think this this times been. I would say as good as as anything take negative situation. Make it better in terms of being able to reflect. Be Able to thank being able to have probably deeper conversations with my wife that don't have anything to do with baseball but have a lot more to do with life in general and talk more about our girls and talk more about Where we see ourselves so I think this has been good for a lot of people. They might not admit it but I do think it's good because it's Dan allows us to decompress but really allows me to appreciate the fact that I have a job that I am getting paid that. Get to work with young people. They get get interviewed by someone like yourself. I don't take any of that stuff for granted because there is going to be a time where I'm not going to do it and I'm getting the feeling of it right now and I don't want that feeling never again so I think in a lot of ways it's been a very positive situation for me personally What an incredible message and I think a lot of us. Listen to what you said I know self nodding nodding my head in in in total agreement coach. I know we will talk again under better circumstances but until then we you you and your your program the best and And hope to see you

2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics officially postponed until 2021

"We learned Tuesday morning. The two thousand twenty Tokyo Summer Olympics officially been postponed due to the cove in nineteen outbreak. And that means a lot of changes for Olympic athletes including US women's soccer star and two time. Gold medalist Carli Lloyd. Twenty twenty would have been carly's fourth time in the Olympic Games and with turning thirty eight in July potentially her last but she's putting off retirement for a chance to take home a third gold medal and Carly as joining us via skype. To tell us more and Carl I I just WanNa get your reaction when you heard that. The Olympics were officially postponed to twenty twenty one. Yeah I mean some crazy times going on. I think obviously Olympics is is every four years and so many athletes Spend their lives training and ready for this moment. So this is a this is a big deal for it to be postponed. I throws a wrench in many people's training schedule. And obviously rescheduling of that. But I'm just glad that it's not entirely cancelled and we will be all able to compete in it But yet it's crazy but I think it's definitely the right thing to do and You know midst all this Unprecedented pandemic going on and carly. You are a two time world player of the year a two-time World Cup champion. The only player to school the winning goal in two Olympics and on top of that all. You've been playing in the national team for fifteen years. I said you were not going to retire so I'm just but I'm just curious. Is there any question in your mind? You running through any scenarios about not continuing on for a sixteenth year to compete in Tokyo. No it's you know it's crazy. It's been an amazing journey. I would've never predicted any of this You know I've had the time of my life Training competing playing with my teammates It's been it's been a wild ride and while we were all looking forward to competing this summer I'm kind of finding a little bit of a silver lining in it. You know it's more time to prepare more time to get myself fit stronger Become better on the fields. And I think it's GonNa give me a another year or two to really leave it all out on the field. I wasn't sure what I was. GonNa do But another year sounds sounds pretty good so just have to keep grinding away and now you know what a great way to look at it because now you do have an extra year to prepare What are you and teammates talking about doing? In this year to prepare for the games to be extra ready while there's going to have to be some scheduling changes. I know the schedule was in place. getting ready to to compete. We had a couple of sendoff games coming up. Obviously are April Games were cancelled So we don't really have anything on this the schedule until June We don't know what's going to happen with this pandemic. Hopefully things start to slow down and everybody goes back to normal But we all are competing in our. Nwf Leagues The course of the summer and into the fall. So we'll have that and yeah I mean we're just GonNa have to Kinda You know take take each day as it comes and figure it out. But it doesn't throw a huge wrench into our schedule and training. We just get more time and it's been a good mental recharge For Myself and I'm sure all my teammates
