Twenty years of climate extremes

"The year two thousand and twenty was always going to be a tantalizing horizon for future thinkers even at symmetry conjures the clear-sightedness and precision of twenty twenty vision. Too which policymakers in resist manages. Always aspire twenty years ago. Most of southern australia was still in the group of the millenium drought. The dry conditions broke records around the nation. Perth stems where their lowest. Since the first world war and the southeast of the country was on its way to the dryest shania period since recordkeeping began as the bureau of meteorology. Put it at the time. This was the nation's first climate change drought. That observation came hot. On the heels of the third assessment report of the intergovernmental panel on climate change which made headlines around the world with this conclusion that there is new and stronger evidence that most of the global warming observed over the last fifty years is attributable to human activities if suburban households become complacent about the household woody's than the drought was a wakeup call across the nation. Education campaigns and water saving devices joined water restrictions in an effort to ease pressure on limited urban water supplies in melbourne for instance the voluntary target. One five five campaign aimed more than half the daily water consumption of residents by encouraging shorter showers while imposing strict limits on watering gardens washing the car. Brisbane went even further aiming to reduce residential would consumption to one hundred and forty liters of water per person per day. The rain water tank in grey water. Recycling became suburban. Must haves offering the means to keep gardens green in trying conditions as the damn levels so lower and lower state governments turned desalination with perth leading the way in two thousand six a prospect that was unthinkable just a decade earlier other states took notice and before long desalination plants were on the drawing board for the gold coast sydney melbourne and adelaide. But for the most part by the time those projects were completed. The rains had returned to the east coast and the plants built. There were dismissed as wipe elephants journalist. Chris noticed this change in the weather himself as he reflected in the updated edition of his book on the murray darling basin in two thousand and ten browsing through his local bookshop. He'd realized that he's book. The river somehow migrated from the environment and ecology section where. It's just six months ago to a new place on the history shows even so this record linear rainfall that broke the millenium. Drought did not turn back the clock. A drying trend continued across the south of the continent particularly in the southwest. Where winter rains had been in decline since the nineteen seventies julian part to human induced climate change indeed while eastern australia record high levels of rainfall in late twenty ten and in twenty eleven perth and much of southwestern austrailia experienced record dry weather. This is just some of the challenges of planning for both climate variability and climate change on a continent of extremes. It's been looking ahead into the future. That's being one of the ways in which ustralian have long tried to come to terms with this continent of extreme climate variability in twenty eleven. The climate commission released its first report declaring that australia was facing the critical decade back. Then of course. The climate commission was a federal government body established under the gillard government but it was dissolved under the abbott government. Soon after its election in two thousand thirteen the decade to twenty twenty. The climate commission's report argued was critical in terms of meeting the two degrees celsius guardrail by curbing emissions of carbon dioxide in the decade to twenty twenty global emissions had to be well on track to reaching by twenty fifty to limit the planet's warming taking the temperature on the nation's progress towards this goal in twenty seventeen the climate council the independent body that rose from the ashes of the climate commission declared that australia was now known as global climate lagged already the concentration of carbon dioxide emissions had tipped over four hundred parts per million higher than at any other time for millions of us and the planet's temperature was over one degree higher than temperatures before the industrial revolution of the eighteenth century. The report warned that the window of opportunity to limit worsening climate impacts is closing and already climate events were getting worse pointing not only to bush fires and hate waves but also to drought and drying across the south of the continent. Just as the gun. I report of two thousand. Eight and countless other scientific studies had predicted two thousand and nineteen was the driest year since records began in one thousand nine hundred and it was the country's warmest year in fact all these since two thousand thirteen are among the ten warmest on record australia. The impact of climate changes lead to longer more intense fire seasons and an increase in the average number of elevated fire weather days as measured by the forest fire danger index twenty nine thousand nine so the highest cumulated index on record fires have burned before an australian but never like those we saw over the summer. It's called comfort knowing that this disaster was nice surprise after all the two thousand eight garner report warned that fire seasons will start earlier and the slightly lighter and generally be more intense. This effect increases over time but should be directly observable by twenty twenty in another ten to twenty years time 2019 white. Be so unusual. Although this use emissions might be lower thanks to the covid lockdowns and the air might be cleaner. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere like carbon dioxide continues to rise and the period two thousand sixteen to twenty twenty looks set to be the warmest five year period on record. Unfortunately a few months of slowing down can't make up for the decades upon decades of greenhouse gas emissions that have accumulated in the atmosphere. He street is weighing heavily on the planet's climate future.

Shark attacks this week

"Getting Bitten by a shark on Miami. South Beach, A 31 year old man from California was released from the hospital. His name is Mark Bowden. He says he loves the beach, but he's going to take a break from swimming for awhile. It just felt like something punched my leg really hard. Um And it was the kind of force that I felt with normally knock me over, but it didn't Punched in the leg. I've never heard someone explain what it feels like to be bitten by a shark. I think all of us have wondered at some point, right right. So on Wednesday he was bodysurfing when he says he felt something in the water that punch in the leg. Hey, knew something was wrong. I was hoping it wasn't a shark. But I knew that was a possibility. My leg. Something didn't feel right. It didn't feel like I got bit, but it didn't feel normal either. He made his way to shore where the Miami Beach Fire Rescue team treated his wounds before taking him to writer Trauma Center, But he's out now. Is OK. And, yeah, you know what? Lately there have been a few sharks stories in the news there was in Australia drones that are on the coast there. The Gold Coast area. They alerted us surfer to sharks. So the drones up above and it actually has a loudspeaker. It says there is a shark in the vicinity. Get out. I think that's a fabulous of idea for drone. That's a real great use of technology now, and we're just yesterday I pointed out to you. Ah, some video we were seeing upon one of the monitors here. Somebody out on a paddleboard. Not far from the shore, and a shark was coming toward them quickly jetted out of the way. I think maybe the shark may have been startled. At least that's what it looked like. Then the shark quickly circled back came around and surfaced. On the back side of that paddle board and startled the border, So yeah, yeah, I think Personally, You're taking your hand in your life in your own hands. If you go into the ocean. Yeah, well, true lot of people are comfortable there. But you know, there are sharks. You gotta look out for that. So coming up the next

The Great Escapes with Life Death and Taxonomy

"If you've been staying inside as much as possible these past few months. That's a little easier to do now that the summer heat has fully set in your probably anxious to get out to fly the coop as it were. Animals who can fly should be getting out of zoos all the time. It would stand to reason. Though. usually therein enclosures netting across them, or they've had their wings clipped. That's a process of trimming off birds largest flight feathers, so they can't get enough. Lift when they flap which I'm probably going to end up doing to our backyard chickens if they don't knock off the free ranging. Birds generally stay in captivity pretty well, but of course there are exceptions to the rule or I wouldn't have brought it up. In two thousand, five and African Flamingo managed to get away from the Sedgwick county sue in Kansas. A massive search was launched, but The crabs backup singer was nowhere to be found. Until two thousand thirteen, when he was spotted, six hundred and fifty miles away on the Gulf coast of Texas among a flock of wild local flamingos. Bird watcher named Neil Hayward have been able to confirm the flamingos identity by the numbered band on his leg and offered to help recapture it. The Zoo essentially said I'm not even mad. I'm impressed and told the folks in Texas to leave the Flamingo to his new life with a mate who had herself escaped from a Mexican Nature Reserve. Anyone who's dealt with a parrot knows that they're too clever by half, and that certainly applies to Cuba the mccaw a resident of Vancouver's Zoos Parrot Gardens. Even, though the suet taken all precautions to prevent the parrots from escaping, it seemed that the clever girl was hell bent on getting out. On a pleasant Spring Day in two thousand nine zoo staff had moved the parrots to an outdoor enclosure. A little while later, their headcount came up short. The keepers weren't panicked. All the birds had their wings clipped. So how far could you have gotten? Surprisingly are considering. She hitched a ride in an RV. Juba got into a compartment near the vehicle's Engine Bay and hung out for three days before the family in Rv, found her. Luckily they were on one of the more stationary parts of their vacation and had only gone twenty miles, so it was barely out of their way to take what I'm assuming was a very annoyed parrot back to the zoo. Anyone who's watched? Jailbreak movie knows that you won't get very far without stealing a set of wheels. Try to imagine the end of the great escape without the motorcycles. No good. Even one? The Indian spectacle at the Berlin soon knew that. In two thousand and four, he rode a log across the moat, the rounds, the bear habitat and scaled a wall to freedom. Now that he was out, he had to use this time wisely. I stop the zoos playground. Terrified parents rushed their children away while one had a jolly go on the merry go round and went down the slide. After getting bored of that fairly quickly, one wandered off only to find a bicycle across his path. When he stopped to examine it perhaps to assess it for its usability as a getaway vehicle, the keepers who had put it there were able to track him and carry all three hundred pounds or one hundred and thirty six kilos of air to his habitat. And potentially dangerous could also describe a gator named Chuckie who got loose from the Alabama Gold Coast in two, thousand, four with a little help from Hurricane Ivan. Zookeepers hadn't been able to evacuate the gators and the storm surge destroyed their enclosure, setting them loose. Them meaning plural gators, though only chucky got any real publicity. Rapidly due to the fact that he was twelve feet or three point seven meters long and weighed about half a ton. That makes for better copy. Zoo officials weren't as worried about Chucky, going native, as they were of Chucky, going up to people expecting to be fed as he had for the past fourteen. Here's a situation that could get very ugly very fast. Luckily dedicated alligator retrieval team from gator land in Orlando was able to catch chucky less than a week later. Some animals get by with a little help from their friends or even from strangers. Three kangaroos staged a daring escape from a wildlife park near Frankfurt Germany. The name of whom I am now going to attempt to say. The hawksbill shoot par concert. It is what it is taken early vote. They escaped by going under the fence. Thanks to the work of a Fox and wild boar.

Courtsiding with Brad Hutchins

"Welcome to no challenges remaining. I've been Rothenberg delighted to be joined by a friend on the opposite side of the world. Me In this episode Brad Hutchinson. Who is the author of the Book Game? Set Cash Previously worked in tennis. No longer does is currently a teacher who just came back from surfing on the Gold Coast in Queens so much as like a delightfully outdoor. Wonderful escape all of us are indoors. Nowhere near Surf. Mostly but Brad hope you're doing well and enjoying the weird time in the world especially can't be right now. Yeah absolutely pretty fortunate to be able to still get outside when a lot of people Locked in say how long lost four. I'm just trying to make the most of it will have. The opportunity is doing as during the tennis tour. Hiatus for doing stuff on different tenants and books and your book was one of the ones. I most enjoyed that read in the last few years. Game set cash and it all centers around the job used to have in Tennessee in Tennessee around tennis. At least I guess. Can you tell a story and get into the details of this? Moore's we go along but of how you I sort of founded employment opportunity with Tennyson with that with that presented itself as hey I heard about it. Yeah thanks man So I I heard about it when I was living in share house in London. This is tat over ten years ago. Now and one of the goals are linked with would always disappear and I didn't know where he was going. He's off to China or Russia. Row over these flung destinations and I knew that he had a job working at tennis. But I didn't really know what it was. It took a wall of probing to where he was back from his trips to to cigarette what he did and a real author while he was a cold solder and He was. He was flying around the world to these matches and report. The school was back to a group that he was working with the syndicate. Who would gamble on the tennis And a mad enough for profit out of it to be able to afford to send him around the world so you could sit courtside and have tickets to the tennis to all of the matches and and do that so a condos tested him to to get on board after all. Because I like the idea of getting paid to travel and Yeah it took. It took a couple of years for that to actually eventuate A few of my other friends who were in the Shea House kind of got involved as well and I went. I lived in Canada for wall and did some more traveling and then finally off it was. It was lucky Tommy just as I return high for a few years of travel. I got an email saying okay. You'RE UP WE'VE We've got a position in any modern for it so sin three resume Which is funny because I actually did have to do that. For a pretty informal job but Yeah they they got me on board. And then I worked as a cold solder for about two years Fulltime the tour is going around the world to different matches and they had the Tom Malakhov. Let let's pause there. Would you were sort of pestering. You're this. This has made ears for information on his job. What did he do? What did because I'm guessing? You had not heard of court citing before you talked to him so was it. How did he explain this occupation of his? And did it make sense? See right away. It didn't make sense to May straightaway at all. Because I wasn't much of a gambler. I love tennis but I didn't really have. Industry existed which is kind of what prompted me to write the book at the end of the role because not many do So he would bring home. These old looking finds that that they could be programmed differently. And this is back when you know I think the first couple of offense to just come out but not many people use them. So Abe was using these Kind of knock is and programming up and would have a program on the way you could transmit the school as if you had a school board on your fine so he would love. The schools from the stands sitting there watching the match That would go back. It would be linked up with the database in the UK. Go Straight back there and that would would get fade into the system and then it would be better pawn To build a physician and generally speaking people who are doing that are using bits as their website of choice. Bet they can back in light pleasant tron build a position and stay. Do better the correct Tom they can. They can put themselves in a win win situation which is ideal or they can go on. So you think is GonNa come through so Gradually kind of started to learn about this strategy. Involved in it the technology involved and the very con of Funny Little Game of cat-and-mouse that was involved as trying to avoid security and get away with doing it so just stop again there. So he's basically sitting courtside or sits in a tennis stadium. Radha tennis court somewhere at a pro tennis match usually on the main tour at a grand slam or sometimes the challenge against and will hit a button on their phone after every point to transmit the score somewhere else to usually to someone working at a computer at central office central location in that person than updates an algorithm which usually which which then informs how bets are placed and the Benny Market Bet Fair which is not like attritional bookie. But it's more I don't need to get. That fair is confusing. People who understand gamble too much. I don't WanNa get too deep into bet fair but that fairy as sort of a gambling market where people buy shares bet against each other. Yeah Yeah it's not your traditional kind of the House always wins situation. It's it's people betting against each other You know so they wanNA take a certain point in the match and someone else's put those odds up then they can Which allows for a lot more opportunity? And there's a mock there with a lot of liquidity lot of money moving and it's used by people around the world so it's become the main kind of area for people to who according t to us And Yeah We. We kind of did that. We had an algorithm lucky mentioned And that would that would automatically night decisions about how the bits replaced. So that's Pretty advanced Maths involved in that sort of things. I didn't get into that too much with developing it but I would buy feed the schools into the phone and it would fade into the algorithm and then the rest would get done at the back end so to speak where everything's processed yes Brought a big article about court citing featured you in a couple of years for racket and referred to it as like a really through adventurous data. Entry job basically. You're just sort of sitting. There added tennis courts somewhere in the world and I was in Brisbane. Is that right through your home. Tournament was your yes. My hometown was born. Brisbane said out was quite fitting. Yes so so. You're just sitting there. Just sort of talk through your day is of course setter. So you're just you get told what matches go to and you sit there and you just push a button. Every time a finishes is it that simple. We'd see the schedule of play. We'd pick which matches guy so usually there would be a few of us at each tournament and Wade Spread the matches between us. And then you head to court get ready. Sit Down if you want to say you're going to go to the baseline behind the plays so you can see you. Got The best view of where the ball's going You kind of have to plan ahead. Dykes half the time. You're sitting in the sun so you you got to wear sunscreen. GotTa Half Sunscreen in your bag. Go to have some food and water with you. Got To be prepared to just sit on courts. Have Long that much goes for you. Know if you're a grand slam that could be six hours so Yeah you kind of just get a good seat. Strap in and the you know you've got to be kind to people around you and chat to them if they're friendly but at the same time focus on what's going on in front of you and try and stay focus for the duration of that whole match even when there's breaks because if a player gets injured all goes off to see the training you have to be on top of that because pivotal right so the match swings in the bedding so is it fun. Is it easy is boring. I mean what does it like? Having to sort of push a button after every point and they're even even in a long match. It's it's hundreds of times a three-set matches probably I don't know roughly. Roughly two hundred points can be. Yep So if you've got a you know it can be mundane. You can have juice. The goes back and forth forever. There'd be set in place that would really bully. And there's other players that a scintillating to watch and that would really get sucked into it but at the same time you have to detach from just being spectator And actually do your job as well. So it's it's go mixture of everything you know. It can be super exciting if you're doing your best of three sets tiebreaker. You're on the edge of your seat every point and you have to be on top of that because it's it's really big money that's swinging big wise each on so you really have to be into it and then you can also have those moments in the day where you're just bored out of your Bryan. You've watched a million points of tennis in the last few days and is sick of it but you're also in a different country. Usually he's got a group of friends around that you can look forward to going travelling and kind of start seeing light of day and the. There's a lot going on so all in all it was a a really exciting kind of lost all but You know Lucky said at the end of the diets daughter. Intrigue Job and that's essentially the seating they clicking buttons and we used to call ourselves the monkeys on the button. Sometimes Joklik a monkey could do job but at the same time. There's there's more to it you have to really be on top of it

"This is after cade is dead So I think Wendy told Helen that Marty was planning to leave that out. I think that's what I think. Because she thinks Helen already knows and she wants to come off as the loyal the I'll take care of this situation exactly okay all right so we're on the same page there. That was one that was like a big question in my mind and I think they want it to be a question in our. Yeah Yeah and and then I think we get to the the SH showboat. It's a paddle boat. Yeah we get to the scene the dedication ceremony and I'm just watching this going. Wow everything has changed Marty's wearing a suit and he doesn't even look like he's wearing a decent if he's wearing a plaid shirt he looks very casual right. It's a suit but it just wendy is dressed to kill. Yeah yeah injuries. Seen true and I just feel like everything has shifted. Everything has changed and she says to him. She's talking about how she doesn't WANNA to leave. She wants to stay and he goes. Why didn't you talk to or is or maybe she's talking about cade? No no she tells him we're not leaving right and he says when did this change and she said. I didn't have time to argue. Yeah Boom. I was so tense in this scene and I have to add something. That was really significant. I didn't catch it at. I will not really significant but A really important kind of element to the cinematography here. This is all taking place in winter and everything has been very dark and grey and blue. This scene was filmed in full sun. Oh Sun was shining bright. Good I I think that the first time we've seen the sun shining this whole this whole show interesting so I'm so tense and Wendy says it's always better to be the person holding the gun than the one running from the gunman She's got a point there. Oh Yeah Yeah. And she is very secure in her position. At this point I think a thank you know. She's got Helen behind her she. Those cartels very happy and she's like well this is it and she does go on to talk about you. Know what if this is our gold coast right exactly And did we even save the title of episode the Gold Coast which is the Gold Coast and also in this scene? I thought it was great when Marty after this exchange happens he goes and sits down and he says to. Charlotte if you still want. We're not gonNA FIGHT THE EMANCIPATION RIGHT. So they both what that what. I got from Matt while at Wendy had a different take but what I got from that with Marty is. He was just like well. Your mom is over the top. And maybe you shouldn't be around her. That's what I got from that. That's what I got that. He was saying to her. That's under his exchange because then Wendy sits down. Wendy sits down and she's like listen. You know. I did a bad thing but I really think that we should stick together as a family and she talks about protecting her Right yeah okay. Wow things are changing right. Yep So commissioner. Hodges gets up kicks off the ceremony and I have to say he starts by saying it's a great day in the ozarks. I used to work in the travel business years ago and I used to have a book corporate travel and this is back when you had to do it by phone you had to pick up and I used to have to send corporate travelers all the time to. I don't even aware but it was somewhere in Missouri. Somewhere near the ozarks ANALII. Yes I feel like it was a radisson or some hotel and every time you called. They would say it's a great day in the ozarks calling the rats so I just heard that line. I'm like Oh my God. It must some tourism slogan. It's a great day in the ozarks. Mardi gets up to give his speech and I get the impression that Wendy has written his speech. Oh yeah and I'm like. Did he not frigging breathe the speech before he gave it right awkward? He's like Oh and he says a couple couple things in here I I would love to read the whole speech because it was pretty short. I don't have it though. But he talks about how we are part of the land here and then he goes. We buried someone. Pause flipped to next note card that we cared about very it was very dear to us. That was a nice dramatic pause pause and he keeps using the word and she used to permanence. Yeah Yeah So. She's ready to make their mark there and he also says what holds everything together meaning the Casino and all. The partners is trust which was pretty much the funniest line in it. Because I mean we're yeah. Nobody's nobody's trust-worthy. While he's giving his speech they do kind of what do you call it? A little montage. Yeah what do you call it? You do a I Dunno while he's giving his speech they they flashed Darlene. Who singing to the baby. They FLASH TO MARTY'S OFFICE GETTING blown up by the Mafia and the hunters. Find Petty's car. Oh that's right. Or were they hunters or agents. I couldn't tell them apart hunters. Yeah Yeah they did. They did to me too and Wendy. I think this is when she's talking about Charlotte and her emancipation. So this is after the speech but I thought this was an important point to note. She says yes. I had an affair because I wanted to be someone else. Yep she said but this is who I want to be right very very telling and listen to this that I came up with. You know this is really all about it's money laundering but it's very tied to drugs and marijuana and there's heroin and everything else and I'm thinking power is the ultimate drug and that's what Wendy's addicted to. Ooh Yes. Look at me go. That wasn't a big stretch but now it was good. It was good. Well then we've got ruth and she goes to. Id Kate's body and she has a little moment with him. You know little private moment saying goodbye caressing his head and then she gives him a kiss on the lips on. I actually wrote that. She gives him a weird kiss on the lips. I wrote weird to like. I don't I don't do. People kissed their parents. I know some people do kiss their parents on the lips. I just but not like that. That was just weird. That was weird. It was very strange. I I'm not sure what they're whether trying to make our heads go with that. It was bizarre And then the closing scene. Which is Helen Right? Helen comes and tells them that Kate is dead. Oh supplies right and Marty knows Marty is really scared of Wendy now and that made me think instantly of the wine that Jacob Snell said that what happens when the wife the bride. Who took your breath away? Now is the one that now makes you hold your breath on your hair. Yes yes well. It's like Oh yes yes as Michael Scott would say my hell. The turn tables have turned because he always gets that wrong. Yes so the tables have turned and they posed for a photo and Wendy is the only one smiling in that photo. I think Jacob Might Sorry. I think Jona might be as well now. They're all smiling. A Little Ella Marty was was looking very tense and she says I love you. He says nothing and she goes Marty and he says I love you too and seen. Yeah so that is wrapping up. Wow let's talk about the title. The Gold Coast. I mean I think that's kind of obvious. They were fantasizing about an escape to the gold coast of Australia. But Wendy has decided that this is her gold coast right and Marty had a full on plan to get them there too. Yes actually where they were heading but yeah like you said that's Wendy's very happy she is she is all right. Let's talk about the symbols from the final opening. We saw a podium which is clearly from the opening ceremony for their the boat paddle boat. We see a camera. chat Just thought was the symbolism of the picture that was taken which picture at the very end. Oh Yep I think you're right family photo. There's an explosion which now I get and is a mob a seaplane right. Yep So dirty dilemma dirty dilemma. Don Don there I put all my sound effects together awry and I think the big one is. Do they stay or do they go? Yes that is the dilemma and I I don't ever know if it's clear if Marty ever realizes that the cartel or Helen at least knew of his plans if well by the way ever told him that that's never confirmed. We make all those assumptions. And I think we're pretty smart viewers. So I think we have assumed correctly so you know. Did Wendy make that decision? Because she's hungry for power to make that decision because she knew it would end disastrously. Was it a little bit of both. Yeah I definitely think a little bit of both and I think she was looking for a reason to keep that power and to stay and I almost want to say that Helen probably picked up on that and Helen helped her out helped her. By saying we know by suggesting that we know what Marty is GonNa do. And maybe you shouldn't right and you know what I mean. Hell in Multiple Times said basically something to the effect of the hard part's over And you know now we just sit back and let the money roll in and she can go back to Chicago. I feel like now is the right time to press. This button was easy. I just happened to have that button here and I said that you know that it's easy. Now it's easy everything is is done and I think Wendy sees that too. Also I think through Charles Wilkes and through the local political scene. She's figured out that she's good at what she does. Absolutely and there is a potential future for her whether it's in politics or whether it's in business and she's had a taste of what is to come the boats the lake houses. The party's throwing money around. She likes it and more importantly she feels useful and important and that's what's been lacking in her life for a very long time yes Yes so I would love to talk about predictions for season three. But we're going to save that because we're going to wrap up show where we want to hear your thoughts. Your comments your theories what you would like to see what you wished you saw and so on and we're gonNA share all of that with you as well and kind of character by character. I think it's GonNa be fun to look at the evolution of the characters from just in season two or even over both seasons. And we'll be bringing all of that to you in our next episode in the meantime if you need more Shannon favorite in your life. We're here for you. Yes we are..

I I'm not sure what they're whether trying to make our heads go with that. It was bizarre And then the closing scene. Which is Helen Right? Helen comes and tells them that Kate is dead. Oh surprise right and Marty knows Marty is really scared of Wendy now and that made me think instantly of the wine that Jacob. Snell said that what happens when the wife the bride. Yes we are. We have a Stinger TV and movie podcast every other week where we talk about all things what we're watching. What'S COMING UP Stinger topic of the week. It's all very very fun and we'll help you decide it'll help you answer that question. What do I watch next right? That's what we're here for. You can also reach out to us and talk to us by phone. I know that sounds weird. But yes we have a voicemail line set up just to hear your voice leave your comments especially if they're about Ozark but really about any entertainment topic. That is at three one five sting TV. There are numbers to correlate to that but I don't know what they are off the top of my head and it just like a keypad. Three one five sting. My final thought revolves engineers I was Fortunate enough to meet up with an old friend in Jeff slider who flew back from Royal Lanigan states in Columbus Ohio and It's a reflection on how well the engineers from Australia have gone overseas in the same away. Drivers so to engineers and Germy mole comes back at the end of this month to return to triple eight after two or three three years away. I've laced by before years away with the Porsche winning world championships in loans. But it's reflection on how the opportunities they a a young drivers engineers and mechanics tool Mike. My way in international motorsport so enjoy the show. And he's Jeff Gordon to insert Sir because we're talking with a rice engineering along wickson service panic but now has a position in Columbus Columbus Ohio with rail landing in sub shifts lighter. I K- doctor. He's the doctor engineering. The paddock no longer here but now in Columbus will to insert. Because thank you to an interesting issue end up there here in Columbus Ohio mentioned. It wasn't high on you and your wash Prices of where we want to leave. It wasn't those name though. The UH in the jumper and frayed of very cold weather and Columbus itself is a very cold environment is getting snowy It's just it's eight degrees at the moment but winter will be on the study degree Celsius really looking forward. You actually will accept before you put him on the Zilly. The carriage has the oil. Has We ate him of where you turn it. All it takes before I can try out the parking. Lots unbelievable. Okay so you'll your networking it's W. is and it has been some years I think this was the tenth or eleventh year here. Yeah Bobby Rial is putting together. Good good teams and people and things like that You had success. She had a couple of positions leopards Unfortunately fortunately we didn't get. We may go to seconds just a fortune for control the the win but then at Brisbane success team won on the Daytona twenty four hours. So we'll round it's this up and down. Okay now you have the Cavallo rising is a might. Can you tell us a little bit. The specs Acre it's basically a glorified. Gt three so it's a bit more engine down for house doesn't have a BS. Take that you're aware that over time absolutely there's a little sexual my disc every time I gotta sit down they get it from but it's a wasted okay. Okay so racy. North America Racine American stopping. He's very different to a story. That have you seen that evidence. Eddie come across horseracing weekend I think just the resources they have far exceed what we have here. Australian strategy is a very good with working within the budget to maximize the teams capability. Oldie of there. Having factory support a level money. The team used to be an INDYCAR team so a lot of resources bovine the seeds that you will ever see Make 'cause off what's because have you okay. The organization still not the different categories we as in the X.. Jp should celestial the which prototypes. What the rest of the Mon.? Jt Elem which is close. I am which is. Gt category that is Lamont. JT and J. D. which is a standard gt three okay now having worked takeout having great success with very fat. Jd says Super Continents Then it's a different able to take the budget so you have the resources to do. You can actually suggesting occurs well for example we've spent about four weeks just working on trying to point one of a second fuel-flow so now there's a lot more emphasis on try to maximize degree over. We can do. mm-hmm we have six fulltime engineers so it's reasonably small but they'll focused on certain areas so we have specific engineers engineers for the electrical side which systems engineers we have to perform attention as which More database but Heavily involved with it They both come. I'm from Full Milan from women's formula. He's pretty much disagrees. More involved with Indycar side but at each round two. I can make okay. I can make a difference I really want the big point. And one of my cases some really intelligent high a high quality people already on the Commission on the boat and within supercars. So it's GonNa be really difficult for me to be too late match that potential chill all over the better bet. If IT ADMIRAL ADM Austalia into it Detroit to try to make a guy so the last thing I want to do always just just just be there on the sodomite numbers I wanna make sure that that can can mike difference and that's going to be challenging but Audience dear wife from any hardware challenge all okay and have a crack one of the things. I found terrific to actually hear from couple of team owners was that you bring a perspective. That hasn't really been there before I account. Remember what your exact ages you've grown up with social media it's being a part of your driving career virtually from when you step into professional motorcycle. Yeah Yeah and and that is their previously. We didn't have that outlook on. Yeah she's something you can add to the spectrum. Yes so the world's world's changing And the the the the the ones that's not the strongest civil intelligence survive. It's the one that can adapt to China if they're the ones that The survive in this day and age are yes. Yeah on salt younger than most of the people on the on the committee and the board and in. But we've got the teeny child's over got the the The mighty starnes as well so on the recent youth as far as management guys in the mix but all. I'm hoping yeah of course I think it's important important to have somebody on the commission that is not so much a current drive someone's driven the consular last couple of years. Yeah we make decisions on numbers. We make decisions on on. I'm Angie nearing analysis bass if I can bring to the table years of felt that drought warning of saying drop a warning system of used it. What that that softwares like when it was yeah driven through that corner that we're talking about that could opinion that gravel trap of experiences experienced? That felt augie books so And then not that all had the answers. But hopefully I'll be able to ask the right questions to be to be able to get the answers to their full as recruit. We might their decision on hoping to bring something to the type of a law. Oh going on and save. I can make a difference or all the Mike and Difference or get told to piss off and go back to the bucks walks but all other all I'll I'll definitely give it all trade. It like everything else in my life and I'll give it up so everything I'm sure you will one less what is commitment to what. What are you actually have to do physically as into time load? It's a massive time commitment. Shy of probably disowned touring on cinema in a law for For the next year for the next two years Like anything like anything in any business you can put in a little bit and make a little difference. We can put in a big effort and Mike and Mike a different module. Right now is to understand Dan Got To where it is right now. So that's got through old older commission night's loss three to five years Guy Throw the history of the spillway way we come through through derailed tearing cows through this guy through because a nail the supercars and and then we're gonNA move onto the two thousand twenty two so I just really want to understand the sport I understand the history of the commission Went on to say what we're trying to sell. What what what is what are we trying to do and end There's this many people committing so much time and if it into the sport As far as drives goes for the teams gus fires fan by Scottish Some people have a physical commitment involvement. Some people have an emotional involvement. I but it doesn't matter there's so many people involved and the Commission Mitch. The job of the commission is to ensure that DIS DIS people at the commitment or their investment into the sport is protected and One with Stugatz sport for a long time to come to a really good sport one of the best in the country twenty-five covering the school and thoroughly delighted that you are on commission. I'll tell you sometime about Frank Gardner. He had not one of those mustangs which it was interesting. It was at the seven Bike across but that's another story. Another time man. Sounds like when tis worth hearing to. Hey Scott mclachlan's clash. How can you should say ended up on a balcony and that's one of those chilling reminders of just? What can you tell me about the Alex Davison crashing? How the wheel old wasn't retained because the data didn't Broke but those. He commented that they'd have to so large. That'd be unmanageable. So the idea of actually having one on shocker and spring is obviously you have a question. It was a great trip for me. "The most train the train staff. And if your product quality is up and down all over the place. It just like it just diminishes all that extra work that you're doing and and people are out. That's why they're always looking outside of themselves with the thing. I can do to help wrote my practice when this. This is part of the the shift unplug is actually let's check out on the inside. Because we have an amazing product. You can even do the other things not that. Well, vocally end you. Got people who are like amazing gestures. And then they don't have that greatest systems and stuff and they still do quite well, right? Here's your product is bad. You know, it doesn't help all the marketing in the world. Right. Absolutely. When she'd let everybody know about the the next unplugged were doing because we're only really doing one unplugged we haven't really even up by tally shift immersion day, the sheer yet we've been kind of lazy. We were did a little bit last year. But. With some of the stuff that we did. But we are for sure we'll have you. Explain it. Do you talk about the next shift to that? We the shit. Shift unplugged his at the in the gold at Gold Coast, Australia, actually, technically called kings, clipped, which is about twenty minutes outside of goalpost airport. And I believe about an hour and a half for Brisbane killing us Aussies. I think that's the case. So yeah, it's going to be similar to the one that we did v necks in the sense that the structure of it is obviously speakers are totally different. And the idea of sourcing that flexibility plasticity and wisdom is really going to do the attention of it. We yes, we talk about Arctic. Yes. We talk practices. Yes. We talked about success strategies, but it's sort of a stamp play. In the sense that we want people to come Friday night, the social Saturday's actually enough people to stay, you know, hang out with us and others. It's very small. I keep it willing to keep a thirty which is small enough that the process can go and some of the. E-content, but not huge people. Don't get their needs met so antiquated. We already will have twenty spaces leftover that ten gone John had all the information on our website at Tra concept, someone dot com. I'm sure you'll have the Lincoln the show notes. But yeah, I think that'd be that'd be great. Our speakers will be Dr Allie young who is a pediatric master in Australia, one of our shift or mentors. He's going to be talking about by tally Pedes, Dr Ben pursell again, his mentor. He's also in Australia, and he's got a pretty big family based practice in Australia. And I hate he's the king of explaining some of the by tally shift concepts. But also, he's also technique group who really really unique way. So I'm excited to hear him. You Don McDonald on binding McDonald's speaking, Greg both. Cast. Did you want me to tell her did you? I thought you forgot. So I was telling you I did not forget to second. I've just genders making sure you don't mess. So yes, Dr Craig fights and Catholics are going to talk as you know, he's president Australian spinal research foundation they are in practice together in purse, she's apprenticed in at runs the business. So two of them are going to do a coal talk together. So it should be fun fun against hopefully. Nauseous. Hey, I over North America. Just honestly direct plane from San Fran you fly. Rated Gold Coast Vancouver deflated into the Gold Coast. I don't know. She didn't go on the go coach president. I think you do that eighty Brisbane..

"B thirty one after twenty twenty seven twenty nine now. Come on now, plenty of time. Yes. So we'll see I like I like to have a deductible plan. Who knows what I'll be doing? But I definitely think Emily and a half ironman is something that I can foresee and Mike the ironman. Yeah. That's a long way. I'd have to do a Hafer. Oh, yeah. No, no, no. Doesn't look enticing. No. I remember bringing the Keeley Jones would be like I'll I'll never do. This is all come over. And see if she came over and watched it, and I think it was Mark Allen won the race. And we're standing by the medical tent, and they're carrying them off on a stretcher and. Got v and his feet are all bloody. And she just looked at me goes never. And then the number years later, she ends up winning the thing. But it is. Yeah. It's seventy point three is way better way. Yeah. Because people were telling me we've watched on a two years, then oh, you'll have the I remember, and I was like I don't think that's what I'm stretching right now. You're you're out there. You're going. I'm sweating walking around. Spectating is hard. It is getting around in spectating. You're like yours fixing. And you're going. Oh my God. These guys are trying to run a, you know for the gal. They're trying to run as a sub three hour marathon two fifty marathon in this the sauna. It's the craziest thing I it's the craziest thing ever. On. I've never done. I'm a little behind. While she's riding she's going to be done by now if I was doing W T S race. And I've I'm like a quarter of the way there, isn't this ridiculous. I can't believe I'm out here. So when you look back on your career what besides Hamburg as the, you know. You're one there. But is there a race? Besides that one where you felt now I feel like I can compete with the best in the world. Before that. I'm not quite sure. This is great. This is fun. But now I've now I'm serious now. I think I can really be good at this. You know, I I think on the Gold Coast the grand final this last year. I kind of felt that way because I raised in a different way than what I normally race. I would say most races. I kinda like catch up from the hind, and I don't take too much control. Right. And in Gold Coast. I have control on the run and try to like not six isn't a workout as I would have hoped to. But it was really empowering, absolutely. And so that was one that I was just I was disappointed. But I was also really proud of myself because I knew I couldn't have done anything differently. Yeah. Well, and that's the deal in you you between you and Vicky, Holland you're leading going in and whoever wins over finishes in front of the other person is going to win the series. So yeah, you're you're racing against erasing against somebody who you have to beat. And it makes perfect sense to go off the front and on the run because you never know. Maybe she maybe she goes, you know, what seconds not bad today. You never know what's already cracks, and in that particular case, she didn't. But. The other person. I yeah, you back, but you don't know that until you do it, and that's I've ever talking Alister Brownlee years ago, and he was saying it we were talking about how guys would stay with him on the bike, even though they knew that they couldn't run with the guy. Right. So the only hope they had was to go off in front of him. But they never would because they are sort of scared of the moment. You can't be scared of that moment, especially when you're talking the Olympics Olympic trials. You've got gotta know that I've been in this position before and I can handle it. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Towering news. So did you enjoy all discuss that for a while before putting them into action or was that sort of impulsive on your part? No, john. I we had practice said and done some workouts where we just played with pace changes and things like that. I think was really good for me because I'm a person who does better off of just feeling really prepared for race specific scenarios. So it's something that we started doing before go I'd like to keep working on continuing. What what have been some of your favorite places because you've obviously traveled everywhere. What have been some of your favorite places to go to that you go. Okay. This is great race in here. And I'd like to come back sometime when I'm not racing. I'd like to come back in different ways like. All right. I should say so places that you'd like to places you've raised but places you'd like to come back and torso places God's place places. Beautiful. I wish I had more time to spend here. Bermuda would be nice have. Outside of racing. I think that's a good call. Yeah. Yeah. But I I love Gold Coast, and I like, Australia and New Zealand I raised there too. And both of them. I just really enjoy and feel like there's a lot more explore also South Africa. We haven't I haven't racing down in a couple of years. But that was also one of my favorites where I did get the tour around a bit when I was there, but I really wanna do like the safari. And. Yup. Table Mountain and things like that. I mean. It's nice. If we've actually stay there for like, both there and Australia. We've actually spent quite a bit of time in, but if they're big places, so when you're traveling and racing with the same people over and over again, and you've got a racist. Same people over and over again, and your livelihood depends on beating Saint people how hard is it to be friends with the people that you have to race. Yeah. It's not very hard. It's more comforting being friends with them. And as soon as the race start like as soon as the gun goes off like there's there's no like, yeah. Camaraderie against who's who's gonna take the winner. Roy. Like everyone's going for it. But it's really calming to be on the start line with all people you feel comfortable being there with. I remember that's something that's kind of changed over the past few years for me. Because when I first started I was like, I don't belong here. I don't know anyone here. Like, right. I was just intimidated by them, which isn't like a great feeling. And then when you realize they're all just normal people. And they're not so scary. It just makes racing. It takes that element of and diety out. Almost makes the facade disappear is is you're you're able to go. Hey, they're they're the same. As I remember one one athlete is telling me years ago, she would be running along and thinking God, these people look so easy. I feel like crap. I can't believe they're doing what I'm doing. But they're making it look so easy and a in her coach told her if they're doing what you're doing. They're hurting just as bad. So don't don't be thinking don't be thinking that they're not hurting. They're hurting less than you are they're suffering. Just as bad as you are if they're running as fast as you are.

"They just do it. And working with the Gold Coast has changed me as well. Every week. I meet with incarcerated men who were finding something new in themselves, something that alludes easy categories and transcend their old identities. How do you explain the fact that a man who wants took a life is now a caregiver that someone who inflicted? Great pain is now dedicated to relieving pain, which of this person is the truth. Caregiving is exhausting often. Thankless work yet every morning these men get up to assist the inmates with dementia. Seeing the changes in them. Changes how I view all of us as human beings. I think I think a lot of people think of altruism as something in Nate. Right. But this seems to suggest that you can teach it that you can you can actually teach a grown man or woman to to behave in this way. Somebody who who maybe wouldn't be altruistic, otherwise, right? Yeah. I think I think they must just have some curl of something there that maybe it's just never been nurtured that we nurture it is through working with the Gold Coast that I've realized we can take somebody who was you know, what people would call a hardened criminal or a murderer or something like that. And bring this whole different aspect of themselves to light. They talk about, you know, developing empathy, and and realizing oh, my behavior has an impact on somebody else. It's not just all about me. It's about somebody else and somebody else's needs before mine is.
