The most supremely absorbing and educational collection of objects gossip enthuse both animate and inanimate gathered from the four corners of the empire. That has ever been assembled in england's history after arrival wembley birdies genius level manservant. Jeeves shimmered off and heat exertion and the education of all became so overwhelming. That birdie eventually sought solace inside an ice cold glass of green swizzle served by a bartender in the jamaican tent preps jeeves. Who was known to curl up with volume of spinoza. His off hours attended the principal. Intellectual attraction at wembley the conference on some living religions within the empire this awkwardly name meeting of world religions is one of several chronicle by my guest howard and his new book the faiths of others a history of interreligious dialogue in doing so he traces. How interreligious dialogue was to find how it in turn to find religion now reflected and reinforced ideals and concepts such as pluralism cosmopolitanism. An orientalist but not always in the ways one might expect towel. Howard is professor of history and humanities and richard and phyllis duesenberg chair of christian ethics at foul paraiso university in indiana. This is his second appearance on historically thinking was previously on the podcast talking about the historian. Jaka bernhardt tell howard. Welcome back it's great to be here. L. thanks thanks for having me again so I admire your courage. You wrote a book about committee meetings in which people talk about god and facts on. I think i just. I just was looking at on. Page somewhere in the back on the you have someone who says oh yes patel in his memoir acts of faith said the problem with going to these interreligious events was that they were excruciatingly boring. So you've written two hundred fifty pages about excruciatingly boring meetings. I'm not trying to like make people by this. Obviously this is so. Why would you do this thing to yourself. And why did you decide this needed to be done. An intellectual mask. The please opened by the time the reader gets to that quote. They find that interesting. Okay you didn't put you didn't put that hand actions in the conclusion that story up. Well i mean You know. I think this goes back to the origins of a book most books have some autobiographical and action. But i found myself directing an academic center at gordon college while us teach the boston area after nine. Eleven and students are of course wondering what does islam teach. What is what is this. Terrorist act happen. What's the relationship islamic. the west is. There's something religious. Violence has that been christian tradition of christians. Muslims differ on certain things that was out of in the air and Working with certain colleagues we staged number of interfaith dialogues biting imams and rabbis to to campus and number very interesting discussions with them. I guess i did not. I did not find these boring. But i found myself as a historian asking. What exactly is interfaith dialogue. I'm trained historians. So i didn't come through a religious studies program but i had ready access in my mind. Something interfaith dialogue or interreligious dialogue. Many people practice that and as i began to read a little bit of the literature at his father's just a sprawling literature. Many centers and initiatives been founded late twentieth century after nine eleven sort of global proliferation. Different interfaith entering the dissenters allwood. Broadly trying to walter piece in some manner. But i found myself just asking what. Where does this come from. What do i have gifts as a historian could trace. Its conceptual history. Germans have a great khan grips kishttah history of so i began to try to think about as i explored a more and more. And it's quite it's quite a meant to. I mean if you google interbay dialogue at our dialogue. you'll have this enormous range of of city. Councils have an interfaith component. A universities interfaith center interfaith chapel. And i thought this is a historical novel. The needs historical contextualisation. That's what that's what led me. So it's a brisk shook to that. It's it's one of those great german words that really we don't have we don't have an equivalent of so it's Let's begin than i wanted to begin with you. very cover. covilli organized the book around certain centers. We'll get back to centers and perforating the second well in several near the end of the program but several centers and i want to start with the first of these which is thought to poor secretly. i want in each of these centers. I want you to describe. Basically the briefly give us a sense of the personalities and the steaks. And what goes on each of these means off or we'll go through that and then we'll go back in the last part of the program will go back and we'll sort of tease out. Some of the some of the overall lessons that can be drawn from comparing these these. What what went on at different times in these four centers okay so fodder for secrecy. Where is it. who's involved. Yeah let i mean if i could just preface this by saying with referees and another sort of intellectual device worked with was that of a turning point because of such a use of large i thought that historians we have one one tool in our tool kit as that of turning points can can you isolate a key period or key moment in the history of something and that's what i began to do Chapter one which is just a title harbingers. I look at a number of Things that you might call interfaith al thought dollar i'll be at about and Before coming to the modern period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but one of the most interesting wasn't fatty port secret. This was up briefly. The capital of the mughal empire In the reign of of the fifteen hundred sixteen hundred early modern period is what we're talking about here. And i think two things go into this. He he established there's something called the dot kana which might be translated as the house of worship what. It was distinct that from a mosque. It was where he gathered people of different religious outlooks to have conversations and he seemed to be genuinely intellectually interested.

"I have no vulture anyway. Everybody's got a decent station music. That resonate with you. But i want to say something. I've been talking about on this podcast. And i want to expand on it. We've done some podcast about trespass and i said about. There is a mass trespass in the th is on kindle scout amount in in the peak district. And we've often said we didn't know wh when people were trespassing. 'cause they wanted the roy to rome and i said i didn't know actually who owned the land was joined and discovered the up until eighteen. Thirty six it was cold kingsland and that meant everybody could roam because the king day was part of the kingdom and the nineteen thirty six Enclosure act came in in the uk and it was partitioned off that mountain to four different landowners in the area. And i got them here. One was the as family. One was the norfolk's and i know the duke of norfolk owned land in glossop area. Because you go there. Now you get the glossop norfolk. At norfolk street norfolk square. You also have the shows briz big landowning family and the person who owned the land that the trespass took power on in nineteen thirty six was the duke of devonshire so they were excluding people. I'm because i wanted to keep it just as a preserve of grouse small in and then that's what it was. I verbs reading an article. The die of this bloke. In this is a strange situation. He walked up scout from glossop direction from bleak. Low in nineteen thirty two. I think it was and he came across top. Shouldn't have been there because he was trespassing but on the mountain before he got there there was about four hundred trespassers. And then there was a load of gamekeepers and and Undercover police officers and some of the protesters at police officers in in their mix. When they went off the mountain they could reveal to the bobby's in playing in in uniform. These are the ringleaders you need to recipes. And this was walking across on his own and he started to being chaired by these four hundred protesters go for it. My prey go for your rights. Needs thinking what the hell is going on. And then he was jumped by forty odd gamekeepers. You beat him senseless because the guests go for a walk. He walked into the middle of that. And i was thinking. Who's right and who's wrong. You've got the protesters trespass it. And then he went the londoners would be new census and i just think he just walking across the mountain anyway so that actually if you listen back and we talked about trespass and you know that. We've mentioned the protest zone. Kim the scout in his who owned the land it was a could devonshire wonder where he is now. Yeah that's quite good. Because of the devonshire in the current name of jacob devonshire who's the twelfth jacob devonshire. i never gonna guess his name marian peregrine paraguay. Nothing good work cavendish really. Where's he live on top of a church. Only one bomb people. If you if you get you get that referencing you argued but i think i think we've come to the end of this episode. Yep we have always been at the man member. He's being be willing. Yeah thanks very much for being with us..

"Less guarantees money united fans title within a couple of years. That's what he does. That's his remake. You've done that. Don't do one take, because the American owners and the management of Manchester United, they will look at their project and then they will see who is the best one to kind of manage that project. And that's what it seems perfect. So yeah, I know. And they won't go the whole way around because that is a new fungal. That is a new Marino. So I agree with what you're saying, but Dan asked me what I think should happen. I'm with you. I look at man united and I see the owners and I see the hierarchy. I don't think he's in any danger. But I think if money united really want to put down a marker and win the Premier League, I think they stand more chance of winning with Antonio Conte, then on the glossop. Here's the thing. I agree. I think Manchester United's board want to back oligarch. They don't want to be forced into making a decision. He takes so many boxes for them. The good side, the positive spin on this is that united are just three points behind city. Make what you like of that. The other side to that very same coin is united sit in 5th. There are three clubs Everton west spurs within three points and a game in hand on Manchester United. So baron gold difference, we could be talking about a Manchester United or being even sitting somewhere around 8th or 9th. Now is that the question that Manchester United's board wants answered? Is that what we'll force them to pull the trigger? Because as of right now, why are they keep seeing things through roads tented glasses? I think all you're going to saw is safe. To your point about Harry Maguire and about the manager, if Harry McGuire is injured, then you take him off. You don't play for 90 minutes, and then offer him up as a postgame excuse. That's why you're without bad. For me, just continues to show the feelings of oligarchy, which the board seemingly are happy to go with. Let's just put those fixtures up again because the problem that some showers got, we mentioned this before, is these upcoming matches right after the man city game. You've got no respite. Atalanta Champions League Liverpool spurs Atalanta then once again and.

"Now just simply has to buy whatever it is ten billion dollars of. Gp's thatta now they can go attack Bitcoin and now you you think to yourself while we we do not nuclear option enough time right i. We could change proof of another time. But what what are you gonna move to. You not have these the. Act not going to have defused. So now you're gonna have to us and then you might do it again. Fbga's but then you've now route options you've covered all your commodity hardware and nowhere else to go to go hide in terms of of changing the the proof where you have to think about in context in which this argument is being made. The bitcoin is like widely adopted. You switch the proof of bark function. Everyone who has according to the stakeholder suddenly switches to mining on their computer and so you have millions of tens of millions of computers on commodity hardware mining and somehow this attack needs to accumulate Number of Co computational pallets being used by all of the stakeholders a be when he wanted to fame the network. I think that's the it's again something which isn't like the you can do. Immediately like a an attack constantly accumulate tens of millions of computers and put them in a a mining facility. Start attacking again. I mean. I think that's very very implausible. Now i think the model that you bring forward is implausible. So there's basically three types of models like trying put forward when you look at the Does does basically the honest majority so with a means basically you. Have you know the majority of network which is on his Generally this is not seen as as a as a realistic model. And so you you wanna go to the the rational majority so the the rational majority will only mind you know to defend the bitcoin that work if it's if it's if it's rational financially rational to do to do so but the thing is that they only. It's only rational if the the cost of doing the mining is smaller than it. Wasn't i get the whole context of this. Discussion is that we have low issuance. We'd have totally unpredictable. Fees and potentially extremely low fees during during bear markets. And so there will only these so much mining power that will that will be rational and so what you assuming. Is you have altruistic minus so the minds that are willing to pay to secure a common good and the problem with with common goods as you have to the tragedy of the comments and you can't just assume that people will altruistically burn tens of billions of dollars every day to secure a network which which the action of doing so doesn't benefit them directly. it's only benefits. Common goes where we have a tragedy of the comments yeah and even just on a coordination level coordinating millions of people to do. Something is really really difficult that anyway. Vj what were you going to say. I want to also talk about another part of justin's argument. There have been a problem with which is the idea that historic justin starting historical analysis of a transaction fees over time as the glossop. Today's has decreased in it. Hasn't dramatically increased I think it's important to understand the poff becoming Because i think that plays into it as well as the people's usage of bitcoin now isn't what it will be in the future. There is an evolution of money where money goes from being and i took in my book. It goes from being a collectible to being historic value in the medium of exchange and eventually a unit of account misunderstanding People had when when because created they thought obviously is a medium of exchange. We should be using it for buying and selling things in commerce. And they'll really confused why no one wanted to do that. So part of the reason. I believe that we don't see really launched increasing transaction fees. Right now is the bitcoin. Transitioning through this phase of becoming store value to nation store evaluate and people largely used bitcoin. As a means of savings they move it around very much. I think this is going to change over time. I think eventually bitcoin is going to become more of a medium of exchange as it does. We're going to have much more movement in much more. Transaction fees ultimately though i think most meeting Exchange usage is going to happen on second lay networks and that what big coin at the base layer is going to be used for settlement between banks so large financial institutions are going to settle with each other on a daily basis to j. p. morgan and and Citibank for instance will settle three billion dollars worth of bitcoin on a daily basis. Because the costume is a sending funds back and forth. Now have some on difference imbalance. No settle with each other on the blockchain. Once we get to that stage. I think the fees that it can be used on the net. What could be much much higher on this is under. But i think we'll be the coin global results standard and i think we can easily see big quite fees in the thousands tens of thousands of thousands of dollars because people settling very large amounts of money and i think the demand for the block. Space will be much higher in the future than is now which is gonna drive. Transaction fees anything historical analysis is a you know what they say in the stock market Poss- performance doesn't guarantee feature time. I think poss- transaction fees for bitcoin doesn't necessarily Predict what the transaction fees are gonna be in the future. I think that really is because of the stage of monetization. Bitcoin is in.

"Hello it is tuesday. June two thousand in twenty one years after zero massive show today but gone off lacy on a jay good conversations. Ot as mandatory ot as were happening. Minicamps where's aaron. Today's a good day. I hope you enjoy the hell out of this show. If you do please be a until friend if not just act like it didn't happen let's get to it won't big day because our guest it'll be joining us in about twenty two minutes is going to be electrifying ladies and gentlemen Head coach chuck pagano. He's been coaching for like thirty six years. At this point he was coaching miami. Back whenever you know they were swagger university whenever you know if you don't want dancing don't let us in the end zone. I think he recruited reggie wayne. Ray lewis although i think he was a part of that whole thing whenever he was at the u. Then obviously he has. Coaching stints thinking. Cleveland baltimore indie chicago. Boise state everywhere. Basically i got a chance to play for him when he was a head coach. I got a chance to play for him. Whenever he beat leukemia. In one season and came back on the on the sideline in the same season. I got a chance to go on a uso tour to japan with this guy. I've had a chance to have a couple of beverages with this guy. I've had a chance to watch this guy. Raise millions of dollars alongside the indianapolis colts for cancer research. And everything like that. And i've i've had. This dude is fucking hilarious. Okay this guy. His football knowledge is unbelievable. And however you want to judge them as a coach however everybody is that has ever played for them so. I can't wait to chat with him. Because there's some insight he can give us on some things that are happening around the nfl right now at glossop lonner at schmitter here the hammer down boys will be coming in in about an hour. Aj hawk will be joining us. And jonathan feliciana bills will be joining us in the third hour. He he wanted to fight me in the next showtime boxing. Whoa think because of the alleged spotlight that i put on toward that potentially banned it from the leak. Wasn't me those aged hawk nosy hawk. I've been talking to pies on jonathan feliciano. Dm's let him know that displayed jay. Hawk whenever you come on the show he agrees. It's agent hawks ball at the man who falls asleep while driving with both feet behind the wheel although incredible football player and good guy he is a liability cases in this particular one. He got all it. Okay so me. And john and feliciano talk to. Aj about that. We'll talk chocolate gone about everything going on here and a couple of minutes. But what's going on in the nfl right now. Is there is mandatory ot which everybody calls many camps in the nfl is mandatory as okay. There's otane is under mandatory. Ot as many camping blah blah blah. Actually chuck i think one year since everybody on the team was as for the entire ta he actually got got rid of one of the days of mandatory minicamp at the end because i think one player joined us late in when he joined us he was already. He was hurt so he couldn't even practice. So i think there was a potential. We've been here for fucking just get out. Okay i guess so it's ota's are very important. I think for a lot of reasons in coaches absolutely love. Ot as the most because all they want to do is coach. Want to blow the whistle. They want to boston people around. Let's run some. let's do this. Let's get better. We're trying to win the lombardi or not. I mean that's what coaches are doing at all times. I'm excited to hear his thoughts on how he would handle aaron rodgers because right now aaron rodgers is allegedly forego and a little bit over ninety three thousand dollars. Oh he's not gonna mandatory minicamp. He's never done this before. Adam schefter said this morning on get up that as of this morning his sources have told him tie. He is strong hell in his position. Too stylish straw schefter follows up by the way with take that harvey you want tab. I am. he was trying to say. I'm not putting any narrative on this at all. I think schefter you know the guy has sources everywhere. He is who he is for a reason. He's schefter he goes. I was told it's strong as hell in his position. So let's i'm not saying it. Sounds like he's not gonna other backers schefter basically but you can listen to what i was told and you make your own judgment is almost what schefter was doing. You make your own judgment break. I'm not gonna do this for you. And this is something. Now that leads into our the green bay packers going to find him this ninety three thousand dollars and some change or are they gonna. He's already missed out on a five hundred thousand dollar bonus which if you a certain percentage of otas i assume it's like eighty percent of ot as or maybe eighty five percent. Maybe it's a hundred. I have no idea what it is. Andrew brandt started that in green bay. Because guys would never spend their off seasons in green bay. They'd rather go somewhere else. I don't like it. I love green bay. Stayed up there. Jong-keun moved up but they put that in there. He's already missed out on five hundred thousand dollars. They could find him another ninety three thousand in whatever five hundred dollars or whatever but they could also opt out of finding him the ninety thousand dollars and some change in this is. This is the first time in the aaron rodgers. Green bay packer saga that we're going to have to see a public decision. Made by both parties green bay fines. Aaron rodgers the ninety three thousand dollars and at this point nine three thousand dollars by the way a lot of money k. What a dream of ninety three thousand dollars a lot but in this grand scheme of conversation. We're talking about ninety. Three thousand dollars is a tax in one county in what they're asking about at some point. I mean this is not that significant of an amount of money but in the report the accumulation report. That schefter did on draft day. If we do recall we knows an accumulation report at the time. We thought it was today's morning the last paragraph or to was basically explaining how the packers have tried to do everything three different trips out. The aaron malibu trying to make it right one with the floor. One with one with murphy. It seemed like it was the green bay. Packers people leaking that information to schefter. He he has never said that was true. This is just me reading it and having a brain. It sounded like the green bay. Packers wanted it to sound like they were doing everything we can to make it right right now..

"It would mean he gets about six and a half hours bear with me and why is it not matter in that much. We're gonna roll with it so let's do some quick physics math. If he's coming that fast that means that the amount of force actually point out to move fast enough to counteract the drag horse the of the water on his body at that speed. So i want to figure out that drag force philosophy which we have we the dossier of water which is nine a nice at an kilogram sweeter cubed. We need his cross sectional area. Which i consider trying to figure that out more by like looking at pictures of command decided. I wasn't going to go anywhere. And just not a paper where they actually just measured a bunch of swimmers and the average area for for men. Na like you know like when you're dolphin kicking with your arms out like oppose was one hundred and twenty four square inches which From puff website. the measure. Things is about four fifths of the size of an airplane tray table. Why of all the things would you use that as they losing out marcus. It was that or fourteen decks of cards. That didn't seem very helpful either. Did not like that. He picked the wrong thing to compare it to you of all the things. You didn't think we have context for it was like forty square inches. Like whatever it is fine you get the is fine. Whatever all right the easiest number two magic number that its way out the numbers whereas the density of water which. I'm hoping you can figure. And it's a proxy. It's a slightly less dense than a glass of milk. Yeah there you go. Actually i would i was gonna last glossop blood but whatever anyway. Hey plus okay anyway. Bad jokes and finally we need to drag coefficient which is just a coefficient a us based on various properties of the object. That same study was trying to figure out the draco fishing of like a national level swimmers. The arrows they found for men was point. Four seven six. I'm gonna say command can do a point three five. Because he's like basically bread to swim. I couldn't justify going lower because he is still man shapes and basically a man. So we're going to go with that and it's you it's not a so and also it's me so you know what i figured. Whatever weird like aquatic you know slickness. He had with via power to who knows. We'll take all of those a formula. We found out that the drag force on way swimming at the speed is about forty million. Newton's which i just realized that one. I actually get a comparison for so sorry about that. One helpful helpful. That's big number though can tell you that that's like four million. Tv trays hitting you at once. Well so what's the what's the much like. There's a thing the for newton. Newton like One oh what's the dumb. I always in physics class. I the way you visualize visualize. I touch wise newton. There's a thing is really dumping. It advertised apple. There's about one. Newton a force. That's probably was thinking but it seem to tell. Yeah all right so like an apple for holding an apple. That's like a new force so if you were to hold you know forty million apples now. Be roughly to force..

"Okay. So. Day one festive hundred five hundred kilometers to go. Who? Phil actually a bit apprehensive. What's? So why it's absolutely ridiculous. But at least day one starting well, it's a lovely not to crisp win today. Sons out. It's not bad temperature. And bright, and yeah, let this continue please. Pretty please. Off we go. Now, still not great off away. The right red is got my Garmin. It's not Unser hit doesn't count especially for festive five hundred. That's it. I have completed festive five hundred discuss back from another hundred plus Chroma today today that spin the third one in a row, and I feel pretty rinsed after that. Yeah. It's been a very full week as you can probably imagine. When when you kind of set out to do it, and you think okay? Five hundred kilometers over seven days that doesn't feel too bad. But I this is now the day before New Year's Eve so I've managed to actually finish day, which I'm actually very thankful for. But this this time of year, it's very tough time to try and do that amount of climate has because there's obviously a few days where it's not massively acceptable per se with certain maybe family members to go out and spend hours and hours on on the bike for the day. So there's naturally a few days taken out of of that period. But it's been actually I I mean, I've been so lucky firstly with a weather spin not about our all, no rain. So that has been the biggest bonus icon you. There's a couple of things I've kind of taken away from this week. And I also is resonant acquire highly with during the whole of the explosives not is that one I couldn't be a professional ciphers never mind about the actual physicality of it of being a professional cyclist over even the mental side. I just don't know how people cope with doing that kind of amount of kilometers day in day out and coping with that level of exhaustion because it just bills and bills and builds and that is one thing to. Until it. The other thing that has massively restrict me this week is I found even heightened respect for the Jenny Graham's egal- homes, repair Guinness, the guys even more. So because there was a couple of days we were I've had to go out and do one hundred hundred fifteen kilometers on my own and those are turf days to try and motivate yourself. I would wake up in the morning, but I try and will myself to get on the bike by myself. You know, it's going to be some time on your own you, go to joy it. It's going to be fund. And inside you thinking is it is it really going to be fun. And don't get me wrong. I'm quite happy to be a my company impairs, but. Really tough when you're pushing yourself a new pushing yourself to a level of exertion on those days, and you're on your own so massive massive amount of respect in admirations for some of the people who have spoken to in this series. And while I'm still not entirely sure I would have to do anything like that. Bring on for the challenges for twenty nineteen be should be fun to see what what we what we get asked to be asked to do. So. Guys, producer tone here. I haven't quite completed the five hundred but I am about to. Publi nine K left. Come over the last of the big, climbs dot acetates, get home.
