"The cold hard cash contest we're talking I didn't how to Glenn Miller even come up you brought up Glenn Miller for whatever reason I thought about the forties or something or other and Paul mentioned but Miller and I had the militant extraordinary guy he died of flying off to entertain the troops who died at a very young age but I know a little bit about it because I remember my parents or grandparents to one of them would talk about it add when I went to school in the crisis I'm fuzzy on these details but there was a private a jazz musician who will do across his name I believe was Snyder but I might have that ride I don't recall he might have been on the faculty what about to become a guest faculty member yet will cost whatever but anyway he started performing he bought a bar right on the river and about anything other river yet now the rivers all developed it so I'd edit became for at least a while that I was there a really big deal because he was like way better than look crossed you would expect to have and his performance he played like weekends are there people go down there and even a lot of college students when including me and he told the story before he departed Chattanooga Choo Choo and while I'm fuzzy on this and I don't remember all of it he told a bunch of details about how yeah it's one of the hardest songs for a jazz orchestra to play because Paul would know more about this than be either the temple or the time or whatever it is changes several times during it and it's complex because the cast solos for just about every type of instruments you can't pull it off with a small jazz band you've got to have trombones a clarinet said it cetera cetera is going out about this and he had a pretty good bad that was behind it but he did have performance of it and it is a great to be a question about Chattanooga Choo Choo it is the first song I ever to win something you know what gold record it's the first gold record ever was Chattanooga Choo Choo and Glenn Miller's virgin it was recorded it was actually first brought to the public what it was played in a movie called Sun Valley serenade and obviously it's a sound track on the movie but in that movie they play an extended version of the saga there's all these trivia questions about it a bit character in that seat is actually Milton Berle looking looking amazingly young guy said nineteen forty one Glenn Miller only had a few more years to live after that but he had this prodigious it either composing or arranging and performing all the songs and in the bloated moonlight serenade in Chattanooga Choo Choo anyway Chattanooga Choo Choo just stuck to be with a history because I remember this guy Slater talking about why he thought it was such a revolutionary song for the tide and really creativity says you know it's just fun for jazz musicians to play because all day because all the instrumentalists get a part he said he had a term like we all got to cheat ya get a chance to shine everybody with every answer gets chance to shine and it's cut and the song changes up odd yeah at it's got a vocal party there which some bands because they don't have a vocalist don't use anyway here's a few moments of Chattanooga Choo Choo because I just want to tell this is from the one that's on the trains coming is that everything is set it in the background Paul what's the what's the what's the Deep South this guitar what's that come with posted that's a bass guitar giving is that gonna whoop whoop an acoustic standup bass as opposed to the heck did they have electric guitars and forty one they did we get Wesley what do you say it's my day then is that the two two yeah you leave rides the train the magazine and then you around Baltimore the west and you know that Tennessee is not very far then we just went from Penn station in New York Chattanooga Tennessee a third party at the station anything she's going to Jack twenty nine that's on Monday she say that Dan as you do you and the Tennessee is not very and Campos picking up said they were trying to create the impression of a train wreck slowing down speeding up exciting all this back and forth temple changing now this one's going on it's tap dancing this movie soundtrack I was the movie version which is the long version the version those put out a record was actually one of the wheels those old seventy eights member the seventy eights do you remember the seventy.

"Glenn Miller's American patrol really nothing to do with the story that much to tell you the most successful commander rate of all time called operation, Sherry it. And it was an all English operation in March of nineteen forty two quick back the backstory commando and commandos are a Winston Churchill invention of World War Two as Britain was on its heels after the battle of Britain succeeding in defeating the liftoff, preventing invasion of Britain Churchill nevertheless, had to begin showing some wins the badly kept secret was that the British army left a lot of its equipment in France when they skied off at Dunkirk and hundreds of thousands actually made it back to Britain, but artillery tanks things like that. They were woefully short on that. And that means they would be short on victories against the Nazis and things would look dim for the British people. So it was at this point that Churchill even Recalling his own service in the boar war recalled that the Dutch descendants of South Africa called bores had tremendous success in striking British supply lines and behind the lines for facilities headquarters was small units at the boars called commandos with a K and Churchill said they punch way above their weight. I know I was there they captured me, but I escaped and he said this is what we need is a way where at a time and place of our choosing from the dark of the night from the depths of the ocean. British men Englishman can come ashore with pointy knives. And they can kill nauseous, and it will strike fear into the Nazis arts. So the British underwent a tremendous revolution in thinking, and they created special forces, basically. And they also created a way to train and select people to become a special forces. And that was not the battle the next step was okay now what so the British had several hits and misses some of them absolutely disastrous. But others. Pretty good. The British rated a Norwegian fish oil factory in vague. So on the coast of Norway. They went in they blew it up. They left they lost a lot of guys. But the point was the overall point the victory, the psychological effect was worth the lives lost next thing. The British did was they identified the German version of radar which was still called RDF radio direction finding they identified at of all France a a station whether it was a lightly guarded German radar site and the British couldn't believe their luck. And so they parachuted some chaps in they overcame the fat sausage eating German guards who were actually a little more alert than anyone thought. They would be, but they nevertheless overcame the guys disassembled the verts Berg radar. Brought it back to Britain astounding success didn't exactly be front page news. Because so much of it was classified. So then the next thing that the Churchill suggested was a strategic problem that Britain had again, Britons alone. America's not the war. We're this late mid nineteen forty one. And the Bismarck is all business Bismarck has been at the bottom of the North Sea. Now for nearly a year. But it sistership the turps was in Norway. And the only drydock on the entire Atlantic coast that could service that ship because big ships like that when they get hit damaged whatever they need to dry. You drive them in there. You lock the back gate you pump out the water. And now, it's high and dry. You can fix it. The only one was in the French city now occupied French city of saunas air. And the British commando headquarters said, you know, here's the thing. If we take out that one drydock that was built in nineteen thirty to the world's largest drydock built in nineteen thirty two. If we destroy that thing, then terp it's asked to leave the Atlantic. It has to go back to Germany to get fixed. So this is strategic in other words, would.

"Herbert acclaimed experimental often electronic musician and later of the Brexit big band. And we've been talking about a new record. He's putting out with the Brexit. Big band. The music. You're hearing right now, I should say not a field recording. It wasn't recorded by Lomax or anything like that. It's Glenn Miller's moonlight serenade released all the way back in nineteen thirty nine. And the reason we played the original recording of moonlight serenade by Glenn Miller is because I know that song was important to you at going into the Brexit bandwidth. It could you talk a little bit about that. Really incredible piece of music. Reading credible. It's one of my top ten pieces of music. It's just got so much atmosphere about it is just so dense with memories and volative. And of course, it's impossible to separate from the context of my experiences of it. So who knows whether it's imbued with that. It must be because it somehow the frequencies go in such when the tempo and things everything about it just seems to glue memories to it. And when I was a my first band as a kid, I was played piano is a fourteen year old and a Glenn Miller band, and we used to play that and the oh the older generation. So my grandparent's generation would get up and dance and the whole atmosphere in the room with change completely. And it was it was really like a him or something like this. It was like a kind of again a moment of reflection for them thinking about people that lost in the war and the experiences that they'd had. And that generation is all gone now. You know, there's a few left, but really they've the around anymore. Angela Merkel talked about. Won that war generation has gone nuts. When we already know what Europe is, you know, we're seeing part of that now. And so I wanted to sort of do my version.

"Was an epic. Whistler who can do. It Rosen that where you put two fingers allowed wondering failing a cab mouth. Yeah. But I have to put my both hands in my mouth. I don't know if I have enough moisture in my mouth of drinking water like stumbled out of the Sahara desert today. So hang on. I can't. I gotta practice years. I realized after I said that I'm like I haven't done that. In years Rosen Rosen is good at that. He can he can hail a cab from mile away. A woman doesn't have to whistle. She just puts her arm out. And then whistling a tune. I can't do that kind of whistling either. I believe it's the way your mouth is. Yeah. Just some natural whistling mouths. My dad was a was a masterful. Whistler we're talking like Roger Whittaker level Whistler and for anybody. Who did not get that? Roger Whittaker reference. You're gonna have to look it up on the internet. So we are whistling challenged beliefs. We are grant what's your whistling satis-? Not good you belong with us. I guess part of the team for sure were the anti Whistler's. I wonder if Glenn Miller could whistle defamed bandleader. What am I favored old movies of all time is the Glenn Miller story, which Stewart such a phenomenal movie? And Glen Miller went down in World War Two in a plane wreck. He crashed his plane. I think he was was he shot. Did he get shot down or did his plane crash? I'm not sure. Which in any case it just went down. Yeah. So they had no idea what happened to Glenn Miller and his playing during World War. I think about this for a second. You guys Glenn Miller was one of the biggest band leaders of his era and yet he was flying a plane World War Two. Can you imagine? If war broke out, like massive World War broke out right now. They'd be like calling like, hey, Drake. We're gonna need you to go ahead and join the military and Drake it'd be like, no. All of the big stars rushed to join the military. They all did. Now granted they might have got drafted. But all of them voluntarily rushed to join the military and Glen Miller was one of them. And he died in World War Two will now they say that a retired trawler man is the trawlermen a fisherman. What does the trawler look at that look up trawlermen Krant? He's because I initially thought is one of those words always connected with Soviet Soviet trawler. But I don't know some kind of vessel. Well, a retired trawlermen. From England is utterly convinced that he pulled up the wreck of the famed American bandleader aircraft in his fishing net aways of fishermen fishing that's twenty thirty two years ago. So he he basically pulls up this plane, and I was like, well, what do I do with it now, and I called somebody and the man was advised to just drop the catch back into the English channel, and he did, and that's where it's been ever since. But he recorded the coordinates. And now they may actually be able to find Glenn Miller's plane now, where's James Cameron? When you need him, go under the Titanic. You know, we should find him. We should find the plane. He was too old to be drafted, by the way. And this is what's so different. From today's era. He volunteered for the navy. He was told a services weren't need more needed. Their like sorry, Glenn Miller. We don't need you. You're thirty eight he wrote to the army's Brigadier General in one thousand nine hundred eighty two and persuaded the ready to accept him. So we could put a little more spring into the feet of our marching man and a little more joined in their hearts and to be placed in charge of a modernized army band. He became part of the army specialist corps with the rank of captain he created and directed his own fifty member band to boost morale deliver a touch of home to the troops and modernize military music determined to do more. He arranged for overseas duty with his band Miller himself wrote that in one month his band played at thirty five different bases while performing forty radio broadcast in their spare time. December fifteenth nineteen forty four. Walked across the twin would farm aircraft in southeast England and hopped into the passenger seat of a UC sixty four a light aircraft. He was heading to Paris and gearing up to continue entertaining allied troops and the plane was shot down somewhere between England France. His point was playing just vanished. So he just gone. Because he volunteered to go. Help our men and women in uniform and bring them some joy and happiness as a bandleader in World War Two that how do we get that back? Dave. How do we get that sense of duty and patriotism and? Honor back it. It's sad to me that that seems to be lost. Now permanently. Of course, Glenn Miller, Colorado routes, I know just told me this. I did not know that he went to UC boulder. Went to UC boulder in one thousand nine hundred twenty three and took five courses and flunk three of them and dropped out. You know what? Hey, he got a ballroom named after him. Lot of graduates haven't had that. Yeah. There you go. There you go. So I had no idea. There was a Glenn Miller can. Well wishes big hit moonlight serenade. Very good. Very nice makes me.

"How our brain reacts to music. And I'm fond of this subject. So I've read a lot about it. And I'm I'm I'm not a music theorist. And I'm certainly not a musician. I wish I was. And I'm not an expert on it. But they've done a number of studies about how our brain responds to music, the first time, we hear it. And after that. How base for how high pitched noises? Versus deeper noises cadences. And they can affect mood. If ladies if you're. You're gonna make a baby. And you haven't told him. It's that time and. Tonight tonight. And you're going to your husband who normally comes home, and he's tired, and you send the kids way with the babysitter. Put on something sexy and have a meal reading a bottle of wine. You're going to choose to write music because the music's going to set the mood, even if he doesn't realize it you ever been into gathering a wedding or reunion or somewhere where there's a band playing or there's a DJ and the music is just background noise. The music is just something that forces you to talk louder and be distracted by until your song comes on. And we all have our song. It might be silver wings are the light of the silvery moon. It might be some Harry Belafonte calypso tune that you and Gertrude dance to back in the fifties. It might be Glenn Miller band or it could be lady Gaga or it might be post Malone are Drake. But that song. We'll change your mood. Against your will. Sometimes despite your will you can't help it that song. Does it? Trump has an understanding not of music and song lyrics sound. But of words. Make America great again.
