"Eight six five eight. Some guardrails on community oversight goals. Fundamental rights for police officers and our citizens. That's Representative Curzio who will be joining us at seven thirty this morning to talk more about this community oversight board guardrail Bill for for lack of a better word that was house speaker Glenn cast introducing him. The idea is that these community oversight boards that you're seeing pop up around the country. Like Richmond Virginia, for example, where you've seen a mass exodus of police officers deciding I'm not gonna let you know, these social Justice warriors second guess, everything I do or put me at risk because I don't act as as my instincts and training teach me because I'm gonna get second guessed by by whatever the social Justice warriors decide to paint as the way the story played out rather than the reality and the truth. So you're seeing police officers exit. You're already seeing the same thing happened in in Tennessee, as well you've already got officers that are exiting from from Nashville Davidson county, I talked to a a police chief in one of the surrounding counties the other day. Who indicated that they are getting two three resumes. Applications a day from from Nashville police officers looking to exit Nashville, even if it means going into a police department and starting fresh being a rookie essentially now with their experience and their capabilities. They can move up relatively quickly. But the bottom line is they're leaving taking in many cases, a pay cut backing up in their seniority because that's how bad they see it in Nashville already, and it's just gonna get worse. And again, the daily crime reports that are bleeding into these surrounding counties. Thank goodness. We're going to be getting more experienced police officers into the surrounding counties as Nashville's crimewave stretches into these surrounding counties just last night at the concord market pike in Brentwood, ladies, filling up the gas tank guy hits her in the head with a gun and takes her car that ends up in shock of shocks east Nashville. Of course, there's no descrip-. Option of the individual. So it's just a man boy that really narrows it down. So people can report what they saw what they know deep it. It is the political correctness driving the police work that has also despicable and makes it harder to to deal with crime. When we're so tippy toeing around who was the guy what was his description? Was it a six eight guy with dreadlocks was a five two woman with actually we know it was a man, but it could have been a cross dressing five two woman with blonde hair. Why wouldn't we do a description of the individual rather than just, you know, the car was found in east Nashville why why designate east Nashville when you're not going to designate the description of the perpetrator? Well, this is a a very important Bill and by the way, no other media outlet in middle. Tennessee is really featured it that I couldn't even find the story in Tennessee. I think one anything that happens after six o'clock doesn't make the Tennessee in anymore. Their press releases anything after six o'clock doesn't make their news because they may not ever does. But they always close. Well. The key element of this community oversight board legislation is that no board in the state under this legislation would have any power to issue subpoenas for documents or to compel witness testimony that essentially neuters any community oversight board legislation anywhere, including in Nashville because I don't believe Memphis followed this this line yet. But they were certainly going to you know, you've got the liberal extremist mayor of Knoxville who who certainly would have jumped on board this train as well. And I think that the legislature moving to act on this sooner rather than later made a lot of sense, another top story in the Tennessee started eight that people need to pay attention to and apparently already are and and sharing it you'd have forget going by a convenience store and buying lotto. Tickets just become buddies with Bill the because it's the next best thing to winning the lottery Bill these. Salary increases for his new cabinet have the lowest paid cabinet members in Tennessee getting a minimum of one hundred and sixty one thousand nine hundred and five dollars with some getting as much as three hundred thousand dollars a year massive paychecks for these folks the biggest salaries most of these people have ever received in their lives. One of the reasons you're not seeing anybody leave the cabinet under has them or under underbelly anytime soon is these are the best paying jobs, the cushy jobs. They've ever had you have his insurance and commerce Commissioner who's literally missed a third of the work. She's she's been traveling on the dime of the insurance industry that she regulates to foreign trips and trips around America and fancy dinners. So she's been getting her big paychecks while missing a third of the work the last couple of years, and is going to be retained or has been retained by Bill Lee in the same position. Can you imagine if you had had had missed a third of? Your work year. The last couple of years gallivanting around with well say a competing company would you keep your job and get a big pay raise to boot? And this is this is Lee this great business guy is handling the personnel policies for the state of Tennessee. And so I think what you're seeing here is the the beginning of a definition of of his administration. And if you're a pow you get a raise you don't have a apparently, I don't know what the accountability is the new head of the education department penny schwinn she actually hasn't. I don't think she's on the job yet. She's making two hundred thousand bucks and during her she just started Monday. She started yesterday. So inner two year stint at Texas. She got in trouble for issuing a two million dollar no bid contract to a pow. And the inspector general there. Yeah. Bad contract. And you only got the state only got one hundred fifty thousand dollars worth of value. Guess what the contract was for testing crony got about one point eight million dollar profit. Yup. Yup. The deal here in that's almost as good as working for Bill. The how most so here in metro Nashville. Sean Joseph just got in trouble. For issuing a no bid million dollar contract to a buddy. And you know, nobody knows what that contract is for either. So this no bid contract business in Tennessee pals at the at the local level now you're bringing in the education Commissioner who's got a propensity to do the same thing. And while they're looking at the testing process in Tennessee because you've had this company called Questar that has failed and failed miserably in handling the testing process, literally cost the state tens of millions of dollars in failed testing that hasn't produced results we can use and we're bringing in a woman who can't handle testing. So the other aspect of this is is who is exercising power and leadership in Tennessee. And it's it's clear. One clear answer. It's not governor Bill Lee. It's it's Tennessee house speaker Glenn Cossutta. This is a very important Bill. He put it forward. And then I there was a piece we had up today about a little small thing that you may not have noticed that. Basically governor Lee is waving the white flag. One of the things that. Glenn caster. The new house speaker said for awhile is he does not like the idea that the governor past governors said I don't like this Bill, and they will issue what they call a flag letter flagging, it that the governor doesn't like that one Glenn has not liked that process and has made it his goal to eliminate the governor whatever governor, it might be wasn't didn't have anything to do with Billy. He was against it. When Bill has was doing it. He has long been against this idea of the governor intruding in the legislative process by going. I don't like that one don't do that one. And under house speaker, Beth Harwell, the fetal position Republicans in the house would would curl up, and do whatever you want governor hasn't because Beth has a Beth Harwell wanted to run for governor and thought she was going to get the hassle money, and so she catered to whatever Bill has them wanted. So if he didn't like legislation they would pull it or or they'd use it as an argument to say, well, we can't advance that because the governor doesn't like it. So the lien administration has now decided to change their policy after conversations with with house speaker Glenn Kasinga who who wanted to eliminate it all the. -gether? They've reached a middle ground with this first year of Billy's terminal office, where they will have private conversations with legislators about bills that they think are bad or that they don't like or that the governor has some opposition to the illogically or otherwise. And then after those conversations the governor's office will decide to issue their weekly flag list of bills rather than just simply making it public. This means basically that that when the governor's little representatives trot over to Capitol Hill with the newly empowered conservative Republicans in the state house, and they say, we don't really like this Bill. The governor really doesn't like this one. I think you'll have legislators going. Well, I'm sorry me and Glenn like it. So you can stick it. Yeah. And then it just suddenly won't make the flag list. You're getting the impression that that. That governor Lee is really interested in the ceremonial aspects of being governor, but not so much in the leadership aspects, I'll give you one evidence of that tonight. He's going to be in Washington.

"Good boarding, Tennessee star report with Michael Patrick layhee. And Steve Gill six. Oh, six this morning. Warming up a little bit out there. It's currently fifty nine degrees and cloudy, not bad after a very very cold last week lots going on in the country today. The big state of the union address coming up tonight. Kind of want to mention something kind of fun. I to get started. So we've got all these heavy political stories the craziness in Virginia a number of local stories going on here in Tennessee that will get to. But. You wanna have some fun? I'll tell you, and this is sort of unusual, but I'm not really a big music guy. I'll listen to music. I like I like classical music. I I don't really. You know, I'm from that era where just turning over between the nineteen fifties and the nineteen sixties. I remember the Beatles. Their very first concert on the Ed Sullivan show back in nineteen sixty three. I think it was. I remember watching that show. So I'm not really a particularly musical guy. Funny to be here in Nashville and not to be a particularly music. I like to listen to certain kinds of music other kinds of music. I just can't stand and most music that that's out there today. That's I guess that's really dating me. But I gotta tell you. And this is such a surprising group. And you can hear them to next Saturday. The sixteenth at the cool springs Marriott. It's state Senator Jack Johnson state Senator Jack Johnson, the majority leader of the of the Tennessee. State Senate plays a mean bass guitar, and he has a group called the Austin brothers, and it's sort of I don't know kind of country type classic country. I suppose you could say with a little Texas, Tennessee twang to it. They are really good. I've heard them. Of course, I go to all these political events, and I've heard them several times. But they're really good. And they're going to be the featured performers at the Williamson county election victory celebration event that will be held Saturday next Saturday starting at six o'clock six ten o'clock a night to celebrate Williamson county election victories and all of the local luminaries will be there. Governor Bill will be there. Senator Marsha Blackburn will be there speaker Glenn Kasinga. Representative Mark green, by the way, who's getting all sorts of press coverage and has done a I think a really great job of articulating the conservative view, he'll be there. But the musical entertainment, really the highlight is not gonna be the speeches. I'm sorry to say in my view. The highlight is going to beat the music of. State Senator Jack Johnson and the Austin brothers. So that should be a lot of fun anyways. You can go to Williamson county GOP dot org. If you want to sign up for that. So there's that that's a fun thing. Now, we have the state of the union tonight. We have the Virginia situation to talk about and Virginia just gets crazier and crazier we had state Senator Bryce Reeves on here. Virginia state Senator brasseries was on here yesterday. And he kind of explained what was going on yesterday. Of course, you've seen that the governor. Ralph Northam had a very very bad week. Last week on Wednesday. He went onto the WTO P radio station and declared that he supported a Bill that would allow essence infanticide. In other words, after a child was born even after a child was born the child could be aborted under certain circumstances. Famously north and said the child would after delivery the child would be quote made comfortable, and then a discussion would ensue between the mother and the physicians as to whether or not to basically kill the baby that just been born. Now that that particular Bill has been withdrawn yet, it's not that different from bills that have been signed into law in New York in Rhode Island that a basically allow abortion really up to the time of delivery. I think you're going to see a President Trump tonight in his state of the union address, really highlighting his opposition to these bills. And you know, it from the Republican perspective, it is I think a winning political hand. Because Democrats have just gone too far with this. I mean, what's next? Now are are those of those of us who are over a certain age will we suddenly be made comfortable and then subsequently put out of our misery. And then of course, the drama the game of thrones. If you will in Virginia where you know, if the governor leaves.

"Focused approach that hits. The core of the political issue bar is a straight talker who delivers from a entirely fact-based legal perspective and always keeps his cool. I think he's the right word. I would use to describe the in would be unflappable. That's I think that's a good description, by the way, if you wanna comment on our story or read more about our story, how the the teachers public school teachers in Tennessee, you're sending their kids particularly in Nashville, sending their kids to private schools at about four times the rate in Nashville of the general public does that disturb you as a parent if you've got a child in national public schools, does it bother you that the teacher in your child's classroom or that a bunch of the teachers in your child's school are avoiding the very school. Your child is being forced to attend because the teachers union left wing politicians. Will not allow parents to have the choice. So we've got we've been forced to allow children under Tennessee law because of the the fecklessness of our current governor who's about to be our former governor Bill has not not wanting to have any restrictions on which bathroom a child uses to require that boys. Go into the boys room girls, go into the girls room, and that you're judged by which one you should go to based on looked down and figure out what genitalia you have and that other dictate with you go into the boys room with the girls room, the boys locker room of the girls locker room now, the governor and the chamber of commerce and others didn't want to impose the onerous burden of boys going in the boys room and girls going into the girls room. So we have this whole transgender bathroom policy in place. So kids can choose which bathroom they go to. But the parents can't choose which school their child goes twilight zone of education, but this is bad. They're all a poet posted choice now therefore choice if you're gonna kill an unborn baby. But they're opposed to choice of you deciding where you want your child to go to school and yet teachers are sending their kids to private schools because they know our public schools best four times the rate of Nashville, Tennessee, this is ridiculous. And who who is who loses in all this. Well, it's low to middle income residents of the big cities that have the worst public school system. But also, you know throughout the state the public school systems are really not that good. Well, I mean the worst public schools in the country places like well, Washington DC were they spend nearly twenty thousand dollars per student for on public schools. And yet when you have these voucher and choice opportunities in in Washington DC overwhelming support, particularly in the black community is their kids are being able to avoid the the worst schools. Now the politicians are Barack Obama didn't in his kid. Oh, he sent them. Well, said well French which is the most elite school in the country in the average tuition. There's what forty grand? Yeah. Most of the politicians in Washington DC public schools members of congress. You look here in Nashville. I I'd be interested to know in the in the metro council, what percentage of metro council members who would oppose school choice for our for our parents. But, you know, choose it for themselves, and that's fine. If you want to send your child to the best school possible as as a parent. That's what you should do. It doesn't matter whether your member of congress, whether you're a state Representative where the your governor or mayor, you should you should send your child to the best school for the best opportunities for them. But then don't slam the door and say, yeah, but but the the poor the middle class shouldn't have that same option and that our children should have to follow the money to the public schools rather than having the money. Follow the child to wherever the parent wants them to go. If if we're having to system where oh you got to send your kid to where the government authorizes it rather than saying are. Our role is to educate that child, and we're going to allocate the money to educate that child and let the parents decide where that money should be spent. So again in these cities where the schools are the worst again places like Washington DC where the number of of public school teachers, sending their kids to private school is off the chart in in Chicago, these other places where we're talking forty percent of public school teachers avoiding the public schools in Nashville, it's twenty eight percent, a public school teachers send their kids to private schools, and again, this doesn't count how many live in Williamson Wilson, Rutherford Sumter counties to avoid Nashville public schools. Six one five seven three seven nine five. Does it disturb you as a parent as maybe you're taking your kids to school this morning that that the school where you're dropping off your kids has teachers who were avoiding that very school? And and again, we're always told the teachers don't have much money. They're avoiding that school at a very high cost personally because they know what that product is producing. Yeah. A very good point. And and of course, there we're told that in this session of the Tennessee general assembly there will be a Bill to promote educational savings accounts, which will allow for parental choice speaker Glenn Kasinga has said he supports that Bill. Now, Bill Lee who's who's about to be inaugurated as governor was for education choice was for the school choice process when he was a candidate. But now that Bill candidate is about to be governor team is saying, oh he's talking to pursue that this year. Well, maybe it's still in his agenda. But we don't know we we maybe we'll find out when he gives us inaugural address on Saturday. Maybe I mean, there's communications director.

"Likes to say when during the campaign, I would say Mexico's going to pay for obviously, I never said this, and I never meant to write out a check. I said they're gonna pay for it. They are they are paying for it. With the incredible deal. We made. The United States, Mexico and Canada US MCA deal. Yeah. They're paying for the wall. We're going to get more money in the coffers. Then then then we got before we struck the new deal and repaired NAFTA. Now, I think that's a bit of a stretch to try it that way President Trump is stretching. Yeah, I think I think people expected that we would find a way to more directly caused Mexico to pay for it. And I'm one of those that believes we should push through a tax. I'm not usually going to be in favor of taxes. But because you've got people who were living in this country sucking off of this country sucking off the taxpayers of this country without paying a share much less a fair share. Let's impose a tax on all the money that the illegals in this country sent back to Mexico. They send about fifty one billion dollars a year back to Mexico if we just popped in a a little ten percent tax on a tax on what they ship out of the country. Get five billion a year, you pay for the wall in five years and. And then we can keep that five billion dollar a year tax in place that would continue to repair the wall pay for the border security pay for the the bonuses we paid to to border agents to ensure that we continue to keep the wall in good shape. And maybe use some of that five billion to start applying to to look at visa, overstays and other ways that people illegally enter and stay in our country. So you put the tax on the money that illegals send back home to their home countries. Not just Mexico but anywhere else in the world. But that you ship money out via via Wells Fargo or anything else you pay a tax on it. Yeah. I think it's a regret. They would actually be paying. Yeah. The because these when you impose taxes are other people look at the taxes and they start changing their behavior little bit. You would probably see the remittance percentage of transfers going down and actual cash smut. Huddling increase. But then you could also, but then when you catch smugglers, do you confiscate hundred? So the please. Yeah. Let's let's see you behave that way if you could capture it if you when they're smuggling it, but you would probably see an increase in cash transfers people renting with cash cross a border. And then you're right. You take a hundred percent of it. So that hundred percents more than ten. Ford used to say one hundred one hundred percent, actually, I'm not sure that we shouldn't do that. If you're going to have violated our laws by coming here illegally. The second time you're caught it's a felony. I think we need to do what what by executive order Bill Clinton issued an executive order that started confiscating the property of narcotics dealers in the United States confiscating their property, so your second time in as somebody that's been deported. We catch you again, we take all your stuff. So if you're living in an apartment, if you've got a car, you have anything else your Bank accounts, we confiscate one hundred percent a hundred percent of what you have amassed in the United States illegally as we deport. You a second time you come back in a third time. We again, if every time you come in. We take all your stuff and drop you off naked across the border. Then I don't think they're gonna keep coming. So you raise a very good point that executive order that you're talking about that Bill Clinton. Did you know he did that under the authority of the denying teen Seventy-six emergency powers? It's one of the thirty one emergency acts taken by president. And again, you're hearing the the left wingers on on the talking heads show CNN MSNBC ABC NBC the rest of them, you'll complain that. Well, you know, they find these fake Republicans like Michael Steele on MSNBC or Navarro who staged her, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna check my nails and and. She she talked to the producer before that. Because you know, how that she brought a prop her nails were the prop. But she talked. She said, hey, hey, when you talk about the border know, take the Cameron just zoom in on my nails because then I'll be filing them. See? So it'll be really cool because people will say no that I'm showing contempt for this argument. Well, she's actually showing contempt for anybody. That's murdered by an illegal alien. Well, the same way that you had was Seth one of the key. The key late night comedians talking when when President Trump was talking about the deaths of of Americans at the hands of illegals including Ronald seeing in California, including the young man in Knoxville. Corcoran. Says well that's gonna be Donald Trump SVU making fun of those who have have suffered who have died who are honest decent law-abiding Americans at the hands of illegals and the and the left wing and their late night comics think it's just a hoot. It's just funny. Anyway, what would you have these left-wingers like Navarro and other they're all making this argument? And and and these are the fake Republicans that they put on CNN and MSNBC. Well, I'm concerned that the President Trump does this then then a democrat president might come in and do the same sort of thing. Well, first of all we've had thirty one instances of both Republicans and Democrats using the same law. Whether President Trump uses this law or not you're still going to have the next president have the same authority the same exact authority. You know, what I find interesting about? All this Steve is how the you talked about the left wing late night comics. Oh, it's you can't get away from this constant propaganda. This disarm. Honesty. Get away from it. And this is why the country is continuing to diverge into two two camps, the far left loonies and the rest of us who have common sense. And I know my kids always hate it. When I talk about the good old days, you know, back in the day, you know. You know in the old days when Saturday Night Live was funny. I don't think anybody, you know, who's a millennial can remember that far back. I'm not sure that they even remember Saturday Night Live because I don't think anybody tunes into it anymore because well, it's not funny. But the bottom line is when they used to do funny stuff. They would mock. Politicians mercilessly on both sides of the aisle when they stepped out of bounds. So here you have a great example of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer giving the most mock worthy seen that should be the the cold open to Saturday Night Live, and I guarantee you it will not be Saturday Night Live. They will not be putting they're not gonna bring back will Farrell put him in the in the cheerleader uniform standing there, you know, like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. They should but they're not gonna they're not gonna do that. That would that would be ridiculous because that would be mocking the left and highlight for some that maybe their arguments are as fallacious as as the rest of the things they have to say. But anyway, the the bottom line is that the border battle will continue. Now, we're gonna talk in the next segment little bit about what's going on in Tennessee yesterday. A house speaker Glenn Kasinga made the announcement of the various house committee chairs he's appointed to Democrats now. Keep in mind, the Republicans in the Tennessee State legislature have supermajority status. I think it's like seven. Thirty five to twenty four or seventy four to twenty six. It's it's in that range of the number of Republicans to Democrats in the Senate. They're only I think four or five Democrats senators out of thirty three. So you have super majorities of Republicans in both the house and the Senate and yet get a show of bipartisanship. House speaker Glenn Kasinga appointed to Democrats to chair committees and subcommittees of the house putting putting them in a position to actually have some some influence despite the lack of numbers that would would normally give them influence so that the Republicans taking charge and putting a new committee chairman and chairwomen as the case may be in the house and in the Senate and also putting in and making it clear that they're going to be exercising. Not only more impact in the budgeting process. Not just leaving it to the governor comes up with a budget since it over to the house, and they just pass whatever. The governor sends Glenn cast in the rubbings in the house are making it clear. They are going to be actively involved. They're going to roll up their. Leaves get out the pencils. They're gonna play a role in developing the budget, not just deal with passing or not passing it, and they're going to exercise their oversight authority to make sure that the legislation they pass in the house and the Senate signed into law actually gets implemented by the governor. Because we've had governor Bill hasn't the last eight years just basically ignore the legislation ignore the requirements. Whether it was the the requirements that the legislature had to to require the state to monitor and report on female, genital mutilation, for sure there's laws on the books. They're supposed to be teaching civics in our schools. They're not doing enough to if the legislatures gonna start making sure that what they pass as the law. What becomes law is done by the executive branch? This is a good example of how to exercise power Glen Cazenove understands how the legislature works, and I think is appointment of John Mark Lindell is who voted against the. The gas tax increase in the improve act and voted for pacifist speaker service chair of the naming designating and private acts committee. I think that's a good move on on Glenn cast as part, and again shows at least there is a an attempt to do some bipartisan leadership, even though the Democrats are pretty much irrelevant in the in the rest of the process, if you want to weigh in on the new legislative leadership, the speaker, and and the committee chairman that he has appointed six one five seven three seven nine five two two will break it down for a little bit with some of the names that have popped.

"You'll finally some of the stories that we're talking about today we talked yesterday with the incoming house speaker Republican Glenn Kasinga and today, we thought we'd give you the flip side with the Holly McCall who actually ran against Glenn Katherine for that state house seat in Williamson county a couple of years ago. She is the chairman of the Williamson county Democratic Party and wants to be chairman of the Democratic Party for the state of Tennessee, Mary Mancini has held that position. The last I guess four years and Holly has said she wants to bring some new blood some new energy, and and maybe some new tactics to play since again, Democrats ran their best statewide candidates. We've seen in decades well-funded Kharaldine, Phil Bredesen's a lot of their self-funding made them able to really communicate broadly, and yet the Democrats full push for gaining seats in the state house in the state Senate provided a net gain of one state house. Seat which changed I guess the dynamic from Republicans having seventy five out of ninety nine seats to seventy four I guess Holly. That's that's your case. We're we're not winning and we need to change your offense coordinator, the defensive coordinator and the head coach. If we want to get back on a winning track. Like a true UT fan. Doing good morning, Holly. How to be here? How do you change things up in the Tennessee Democratic Party when the National Democratic Party keeps moving so far so extreme to the left? I mean, you've you've had Democrats win in Tennessee who were basically conservative southern Democrats. And what the Democrats it seems to me if lost in Tennessee is those rural and suburban conservative D'amoto Democrats because the the party nationally has moved so far to the left. How do you reverse that trend in one state? Well, it's not going to be easy. And you're absolutely right. I say if I do win, I will be no favorite of the DNC because their messaging is killing southern states. I think Georgia's faring a little bit better than we are. But I actually looked to the Republican party in Tennessee. Strangely. Maybe but as a model for success because growing up here in Franklin, Tennessee, I remember when Williamson county was not always read is it is it was more of a fifty fifty county and Republicans were very smart about building from the base twenty years. They picked off county commission seats and board of mayor and alderman. And here we are today. So one of the first things that propose is really going back to that grassroots like, hyper local grassroots strategy. But don't you have to have issues as the focus? I mean to me it seems that the Democrats in Tennessee for the last twenty thirty forty years, they were they were gun owners proponents of second amendment. They tend to be more pro-life than pro-abortion they tended to be in favor of lower taxes, not higher taxes. And again when you've got the Democratic Party nationally, and in the state moving to the left where LGBTQ issues matter more than farming issues. It's kind of hard to get those conservative Democrats back in the fold. It is and messaging is. Probably the toughest issue we face, and I don't think we've been focusing on that enough. I I had somebody reach out to me. They were very upset. They've got an Email from the Democratic Party talking about getting rid of co. Well, this is somebody from east Tennessee who works at TV a and coal is very important to their business. So yes, we've got the hammer that in and I think you're correct there still are many Tennessee Democrats who they'll still vote democrat, but they are pretty conservative for Democrats. And we've got to try to change the message to show that what we are care about here in this state. If not in Washington are people's right? The right for you to have a hospital in your hometown. And the right for you to be able to afford to get health care for your family and not just a job, but a good paying job. So you can put food on your family's table, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt was considered a radical time. But I think you need to go back to that message of we're more about the economic issues and. Chicken in every pot. Holly. This is Michael Patrick layhee question for you. When will the election be held for the state chairmanship, January twelve so a week from tomorrow, this all goes down, and how do you I know how in the Republican party, you've got the state executive committee that votes, so you're really just catering to an of sixty to ninety voters are going to determine this not not the broad brush of of Tennessee Democratic Party voters across the state, and that's pretty much how ours is done to which makes it tough. I think it's seventy two voters total you've got the sixty six members of the state executive committee, and then the ex-officio house caucus chair Senate caucus chair democratic women young Democrats college Christ, it makes it a tough sell because I'm really funding, and I know people come probably come on the show, but there's a lot of grassroots support for change for some change, you know, Mary van CD defined person. But again after four years if you lose lose. Lose there's going to be a movement, but, you know, the executive committee seed one side, and there are some people who also won't change or very pleased with the way things are going. So please count me among that because I'm very pleased with how y'all are doing it. Well. Clip of that shopping around. Any race? Mary's got the power of incumbency on her side. And she's built strong relationships. And it's it's still gonna be a tough sell. But I think it'll be very close. We certainly hope that that we we have conflicting feelings here. Holly, you talk to us, and you're a sane and rational person and. But, you know, married us and talk to us, nor does her spokesperson. He just says bad words about people like us. And. So we're conflicted when we would be able to have you on and talk to you periodically. But we like how poorly they're doing and we want Mary Nancy need to continue. You said something very interesting. This is part of what I think is wrong with America these days like we've got to where we don't talk to each other. You know, I've got plenty of Republican friends, and that we do not talk to each other just based on party politics is a problem. And there's no way Democrats are ever going to convince people that we are saying if we don't come on your show, for instance, let other folks here so people get here that I am not some blame throwing radical. And it kind of makes me sad that you do not get talk to state Democrats more. But when when you look at it part of your challenge, I think Holly is is you look at the national Democrats. You look at the Alexandria Akhazia Cortez's who are getting all the limelight. Look at this new Muslim woman elected from Dearborn Michigan the leave who goes on screaming at apparently after telling her son the same story that they're going to impeach the m effort in the White House win. That's what people see in here from from the Democrats at the national level. How do you convince them that Tennessee Democrats are more saying that what they're seeing at the national level? I don't have. Don't have all the answers, and that's tough. And there are a lot of media outlets. Not just like FOX's telling one side of the story, but MSNBC and CNN they're telling the same story. So it's pretty hard to escape that. And that is a huge challenge. Like, I had not heard that she used that language, which I find appalling, you know, that's worse. She claims she was telling her young son that that that's what they were gonna do. She was just recounting it to move on dot org. So this is how she apparently talks to her kids. If this is how Democrats talk to their kids, and this is by the way, a woman who paraded around who's an anti Semite whose anti Israel anti-jew in on election night paraded around with a Palestinian flag rather than an American flag. Again, I don't know if y'all paid me huge consulting fees. Holly, I would have to tell you. I may have to turn down the gig. Because I don't know what the answer would be of how do you overcome letting Maxine Waters, and and to leave and. Alien Omar, and these others they are capturing the spotlight, and how do you convince people in Tennessee that y'all aren't crazy when all they're seeing at the national level is crazy. And you know, I don't I don't have the answer that we've gone through pay me a lot of money. I wouldn't have the answer for you. I think Tennessee southern Democrats have always been different for Democrats in the rest of the country. And I do think you can you can reconcile being progressive as I said, I think progressive values more about giving people rights, but the also the right to get healthcare, etc. But I think it's going to be tough for us to get that reconciled because you're correct people. Do see what's being aired nationally? And I got some calls during the cabinet hearing. I got a call for gentleman who said, well, I just I voted democrat before, but I can't vote democrat because I don't like what I'm saying on TV. And and let me be clear, I am a yellow dog democrat. I think I might have voted for Republican once in my life, but I do. When I was running for congress years ago in Williamson county that probably me. Sparkle..

"Tennessee star dot com detailing how it happened in what happened. And who won and who tell a little bit short. Now. The interesting thing happens next Glenn Cassidy as the speaker will make the selection of who serves on what committees of the house, and who serves importantly as chairman and vice chairman of various committees subcommittees. There has been a lot of talk over the last several months, not only was Glenn Kasinga and Curtis Johnson and David hawk not only were they out there. Trying to campaign among the the likely winners of state house seats, both the incumbents that we're coming back in those that were running in open seats or or challenging Democrats. They were out there. Trying to solicit the votes to to kind of have the the support when they got to the point yesterday of having their votes. And and that means giving out campaign donations to to help these candidates who are running have enough money to buy some mayo by some radio and and buy yard signs, and those sorts of things so Glenn castor was out making donations as was Curtis Johnson. They're also out talking to folks about you. Now, if I win you'd really be good on the commerce committee, or you'd be really great on the transportation committee made some of the committees make it easier make it more capable of candidates to raise money if you're uncertain committees. There's just there's just not a lot of money flowing. If you're on other committees, the industry's the banking industries, the the the manufacturing industries. The agriculture community has has a real desire to to put a little money into your campaign coffers, some committees just help you raise more money than others and some members like to be on those money raising committees. And and picking who serves or who serves as a chairman where if you're chairman of a committee, you get even more clout, you have more power, and you have the ability to raise even more money. So the selection of who gets those g positions is also important, particularly when you've had a lot of vacancies created over the last several months as members chose not to run or got defeated boss dos berry dos who was the chairman of the transportation committee. Who jammed through the gas tax increase? He got beaten his primary. So he's not coming back. So there's a vacancy there as a chairman chip, you also had Tim go an incumbent get beat creating new opportunities for for positions on committees. And is chairman of committees Harry Brooks from Knoxville Knox county in east Tennessee was chairman of the house education committee. So you have the house education committee spot vacant because Harry Brooks chose not to run for reelection. So you've got these committee chairmanships that Glenn Cassidy will choose who goes into those slots, and then picking which members of the house serve on which committees very big decisions and. Talking to people about where he might put folks where he might place. These these members was key to getting to getting the votes. It's just it's how politics works now. I'm not sure whether David hawk and Curtis Johnson. We'll get great committee assignments, I wouldn't expect either one of them to be chairs of committees having challenge Glenn having not supported him for the house speaker ship Gazzetta may decide a man I hate it. But, but you're going to be on this particular committee that may not be your favorite committee. And you're not going to be a chair mean, that's that's kind of the the double edged sword of when you seek a leadership position. And you fall short, you don't you don't get the goodies. You don't get the big kids table at thanksgiving. You don't get the extra piece of pie. It's it's just how it works. So it'll be Roque interesting to watch over the next few weeks as the committee assignments are made in the chairmanships are selected. And then, of course, the lobbyists are watching very closely because who they influence who they've donated to in the past. They may have to make some big donations between now and in January when the.

"Talk radio ninety eight point three and fifteen ten wwl AC. Now back to the Tennessee star report, Steve Gill and Michael Patrick lane. And welcome back in. This is the Tennessee star report as always gonna Tennessee star dot com. That's Tennessee star dot com where you'll find links to some of the stories that we're talking about today, including the fact that Republicans in the state house here in Tennessee elected new leadership yesterday. Now, the the new speaker who was widely expected to be elected speaker is Glenn cast of Williamson county, he will be the speaker right now, the Republican caucus has voted, but they have seventy three out of ninety nine votes. They will will combine to elect their leadership in January officially when the legislature comes in. They pretty much come in. And then they start start the business of legislating again. The state Senate doing the same thing and Glenn Casta easily won the caucus vote that will translate into the into the election in January with forty-three out of seventy three votes setting the tone for other mainly predictable elections during the House Republican costs caucus meeting held yesterday. Now Cassidy was writing. Against curtis. Johnson who had been the speaker pro tem under house speaker Beth Harwell and against David Hawkins. Tennessee Republican who got some attention during the gas tax debate by coming up with an alternative that would have increased some of the taxes are allocated some of the taxes on things like windshield, wipers and other car parts to to put that money into the to the road construction budget, which would have been the same hundred twenty million dollars or so plus that they were trying to generate additional revenue without raising taxes on regular citizens working, folks. But that didn't go anywhere, but David hawk did get some attention and show himself to be a pretty good conservative on that level. Except for the fact that it didn't go anywhere other Republican caucus elections were were involving other members including Ryan Williams who was the current Republican caucus chairman. He opened up the the meeting and and conducted the meeting as the caucus chairman until others got elected. Now, the the way the rule. Work when they do these caucus elections in the in the house here in Tennessee and the same rules apply. Just with different numbers in the state Senate where there are thirty three members Republicans have all but five States Senate member. So when they elect their leadership fully expected that Lieutenant governor Randy McNally will continue as Lieutenant governor. But Mark Norris who has been the majority leader for the Republicans in the Senate has been appointed to a federal judgeship has vacated his seat or will officially vacated soon. There'll be a special election for that seat sometime soon that leaves the house majority are the Senate majority leader position open, and you've got Jack Johnson state Senator from down in Williamson county who is is running aggressively for that spot. And I think again kind of like with the house in Glen caster looking to be the winner there as it proved out yesterday it's expected to Jack Johnson will move up to the Senate majority leader position as the leader of the Republicans in the state Senate it when they have their vote. In any of it. The way these workers, you gotta get a majority of your caucus to be the caucus nominee in the case of the house there Seventy-three members, you need thirty seven votes in order to to get the the nomination to to be the selection of the caucus now, even if a member chooses not to vote so somebody who doesn't vote doesn't count you have to get the thirty seven not just a majority of those who actually cast their votes, a thirty-seven is sort of the magic number and Glenn Cassidy had told us last week that he thought he had about forty four firm commitments. He got forty seven. So is commitments actually actually held firm now usually you'll have when you've got a three person race like you had in the house speakership race. You gotta division. There's there's pretty good blocks of support for each candidate thinks they can the can move up to the speaker chair in this case it really didn't divide very evenly. Among the three candidates Clint cast a one again pretty easily being elected as the. As the new house speaker or or will be the house speaker when when they convene back again. Now, there were some other names that were given the opportunity to to move into leadership as as Cassidy moved from the house majority leader up to the to the speaker position, you have some of the other members of the house that we're trying to to kind of move into leadership positions as well. So the speaker pro tem who again was Curtis Johnson. "Now, more of the Tennessee star report with Steve dill and Michael Patrick layhee. And welcome back in. This is the Tennessee star report. Steve Gill, Michael Patrick layhee here with you late night. But we're here we we make we make close, but we never does seven three seven nine five two to the phone number winners and losers. A couple in doubt throw out a couple and feel free to dive in with with your thoughts of who were big winners and big losers last night. The the Republicans in Tennessee in the state house looks like they picked up maybe a net of one or maybe a net loss of one, but super majorities retained by the state house in the state Senate in Tennessee, despite through the Democrats making their big claims of a Blue Wave, and they were recruiting more candidates and spending more money. Liberal extremists Mary Mancini and Mark Brown have have run the Tennessee Democratic Party into the ground. And I was doing channel to last night with Bruce Dobie, and he was shell shocked by the numbers, the margin that Bresson and Kharaldine got defeated. Just absolutely drubbed. And how do you set up? A forward movement for the Democratic Party in Tennessee. The left is going to say, we ran moderates and see what happened and the is they ran moderates with Tennessee's conservative, and the Tennessee Democratic Party is apparently gonna move even more socialist to the left which will not bode well for Tennessee Democrats, or for the state of Tennessee, y'all have a competitive two party system. If you're going to bring out the best in the political arena, and the Democrats have just vacated the field as we saw those numbers. So for for Glenn Kasinga who was a driving force for for the house. They lost Eddie Smith over Knoxville lost Gloria Johnson in a in a race. They've been going back and forth. And it's been it's been close. Every time. Tommy Vallejo's did not win up in in the Clarksville area. Clarksville is turning a little bit more blue than I think a lot of folks would would like, and they did not pick up that one coach bird in western ac-, prevailed one the Democrats left they were going to pick that seat up. Craig fitzhugh vacating his seat to run for governor Republicans picked up. That one. So the Republican supermajority rains in in effect, and Glenn Kasinga Robin Smith and their team. Did did a great job. We'll talk more about polling and pollsters got absolutely obliterated here. Tennessee east Tennessee State university middle Tennessee State university. Vanderbilt polls built so far off the Mark awful. Again, what they need to just disband their minds department in the polling business. They could focus all their the resources on maybe football at vandy instead seven three seven nine five two two other big loser. By the way, Taylor swift yet another man she picks turns out to be a disappointment seven three seven nine five two. Let's go to next Wayne, you're on the Tennessee star report with Steve Geller, Michael Patrick layhee. Hi, guys. I haven't even heard this soft on the national level. But I'm Anne how many Republican congressman retired and did not run with forty something was about forty which opened up a lot of open seats in districts that were lean blue or that Hillary Clinton had carried. That's why the it was almost a guarantee that the Democrats were going to pick up the Twenty-three they needed just because we had vacated seats that we could not hang onto as Republicans in districts that that they were going to pick up. Here's the good news, though, two years from now with Nancy Pelosi in Maxine Waters in the nitwit crazy loonies running their show. I think you'll get a forty to fifty seat. Swing back with Donald Trump on the ballot. And today and tomorrow, I may take today off in the next couple of days. I wanna go through those house seats that the Democrats one where are the ones that they won by two points or less, and that's the twenty or thirty Republicans need start targeting about Thursday. Yeah. You know, you look at the power historically of the incumbent, and it's more done. No matter who it is where you are. So those forty stayed in it in ruin yeah. We took some losses, but they only they only gain a majority by three votes for three feet. So Republicans probably have hung on had all of those people not retired for whatever reason. But so it's really not it's clearly not a referendum against President Trump is just the fact that so many Republicans stepped down at this election. That's really the issue. But that's not going to be talked about it. They don't claim victory if they credit and. When it wasn't deserving. Donald Trump carried the day. There would have been a serious Blue Wave if Donald Trump had not gone out and made the election about Donald Trump. That's how Republicans picked up seats in the Senate. It's how they they reduced the number of seats that the Democrats took they're gonna end up about thirty three thirty four net gain. So they're gonna have about a twenty point gap with ten ten more than they need to surpass the to eighteen or so so they're going to have a small minority and keep in mind, you have about twenty five Democrats who've said they're not gonna vote for Nancy Pelosi. So is the first thing they do when they go to Washington prove themselves to be liars or do they go to Washington and improved a Nancy Pelosi? They can't be counted. Upon either way, it's not a good move for them. I'll tell you when the other big losers Wayne Republicans lost a lot of governors races and the governor's races. They should have one. Now, where we're Donald Trump went in like, Georgia, and Florida and other states he saved the day looks. Like Republicans may pick up Connecticut, which would be a huge win. But lost seats Ohio was a big win. Because as you looked at twenty twenty that matters but Republicans lost congressional or lost governors races. Do you know who was running the Republican congressional or the Republican governors campaign nationally? Bill Hasler Bill has lem. You know, he's the one that helped us take it in the shorts in those governor's races. His campaign team didn't do what what should have been done to win. Those governor's races. Positive things. Jane was.
