On Radical Markets with Glen Weyl and Riva Melissa-Tez
Glen Weyl (@Glenweyl) and Riva Melissa-Tez (@rivatez) join Erik for this episode. They discuss Glen’s book, Radical Markets, and a number of topics related to it, including: - The similarities between Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco when it comes to wealth distribution - Why Glen has received blame and praise on different issues from both sides of the political spectrum - Why the book appeals primarily not to the right or the left, but to the open-minded - The reason that Glen calls himself a social technologist - How Glen came to meet Vitalik Buterin and how they ended up writing a paper together, which Glen calls “the single thing I’m most proud of intellectually” - Skeptical perspectives on blockchain and cryptocurrency, and why Glen calls them “a society of absolute private property governed by plutocracy” - “The problem of funding public goods without having to pre-suppose that it’s all going to be done by some particular democratic government somewhere.” - Why Glen thinks the news media is the best opportunity for decentralized funding - The idea that “economics is a disguise for the interests of a narrow part of society.” - Glen’s relationship with Jaron Lanier and his admiration of Jaron as a thinker - Glen and Riva’s requests for startups - Evolving the idea of human capital Thanks for listening — if you like what you hear, please review us on your favorite podcast platform. EP-165 | The Legacy of U.S. Navy SEAL Glen Doherty - Benghazi
“Greg, Greg, we are under attack,” were the last words from Ambassador John Christopher Stevens to his deputy Greg Hicks over the phone from Benghazi office shortly after the attack began around 9:30 p.m. “If you don’t get here we are going to die,” the radio operator at the tactical operations center in Benghazi pronounced on the radio from the improvised consulate. Glen ”Bub” Doherty was part of the quick reaction force consisting of eight U.S. military or former military that left Tripoli in the rush to help rescue the Stevens and his colleagues at the consulate. His task was the same as the task of the 21 CIA personnel at the CIA annex one mile from where Ambassador Chris Stevens’ and the others came under attack. Glen Doherty’s Libya assignment was supposed to be his last for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He had been offered a more suitable job in the private sector that would have allowed him to get out of the line of fire. Written by Eric Sof. In this episode his best friend, Sean Lake, joined the crew to talk about he and BUBs childhood dreams growing up as snowboarders, to how BUB became a SEAL, served on a SEAL team, was tragically killed in Benghazi, and how Sean was supposed to use the money left to him by BUBS to throw a big party, but how his friends legacy lives on through The Glen Doherty Foundation and BUBS Naturals.
