Fashion History Now

"So this week April. I thought we were Kinda start talking about fashion wink. We're on the tail end of the month of quote Unquote Fashion Week. We are currently witnessing all the Paris runway shows and I thought this would actually be a great opportunity to suggest a instagram. Follow to our listeners. At Robin Given our OB. I N. G. I. V. H. A. N. She's a fashion critic for the Washington Post and pass dressed guest that absolutely. She came on the show and our very first season to talk to us about the battle over cy which happened in nineteen seventy three and it was basically like a fashion show face off between French. Katori as an American designers. Yes so that was an amazing episode but she is an incredible critic. She's very thoughtful and insightful about her coverage of fashion that I think a lot of our listeners will really appreciate for instance today. She's posting about the Balenciaga show. And she's saying that. The show is thoughtful but she says quote. Thoughtful just stressful. It's very ominous. I think it's kind of a commentary on climate change. I haven't read much else about it. But she also has been writing about kind of the feminist ideologies that Inspire Maria Grazia. Carey's creations for Dr. And how you know that. The fashions and the runway she presents don't really reflect those feminists beliefs. They still reflect this kind of feminine ideal of a woman which is a little counter intuitive or counter to feminism for all women representing all women. That's something that's I guess. Problematic throughout fashion she also has commenting about Virgil Oslo off-white collection. She just doesn't get it. I don't know if you've seen that yet. But he was sending like half Parkas and half tool dresses down the runway. Yes and not only that but one of those tool dresses was actually ripped off. I think it was from givenchy. I don't know if Jeevan she but she ought. There's definitely been comparisons to victor and Ross tool creations and kind of cut out creations. Like it's definitely something that's definitely probably been done before. But I thought the fashion writer Tony Glenville who you could also follow on instagram. How To really insightful? Commentary about some of the collections? That have hit the runway today and he wrote that it's time fashion. Stop treating US too. Don't care close. You know kind of these clothes that we can't really wear in real life. He says you know when you start thinking. The future and designing fashion aware in the real world think about fashion to keep and cherish and fashion to make women look strong and confident. It's not taking the fun out of fashion. It's actually thinking on the subject of fashion as Global Business. And he goes on. That fashion is a creative force. An employer of millions repository of tradition. And Crass let's think about how it can survive in the future and then I wanted to kind of talk to you about this April because he ends with costume belongs in museums. Fashion belongs in our lives and I was curious what your thoughts are on about that. Do you agree with him? Well I mean I think. That's some problematic terminology in terms of exactly how we as fashion historian. Use those words right because all fashion is costume but all costume isn't necessarily fashion. Does that make any sense? Yeah and I think. He's trying to distinguish between this idea of like fashion as as costume as kind of like this performance. Art as a something. That isn't really representative of what we would wear in every day and specifically he was talking about the mosquitoes down by Jeremy Scott. I'm recently which he literally had. It was very much a let them eat cake. Marie-antoinette moment with like tons of Pan Yeas and women in the you know those huge waves reflective of late eighteenth century fashion but they literally came down the runway dressed cakes and like references to eighteenth century panelled gown so a lot of people probably aren't going to wear those clothes. I guess the argument would be if we're just creating fashion for. I guess this like a federal shock value to send it down the runway. Is it still worth it? Should we be doing that or should we be more conscious of the environment and creating fashion? That isn't actually meant to be put on bodies. Well I that actually kind of leads me into the the follow that I want to talk about. Because you said WHO's GonNa wear these things? Well perhaps this next segment of the fashion buying public. Which are drag Queens? So I can definitely see some of those drag Queens on Rupaul drag race adoring that mosquito collection and I would like to recommend to. Our listeners is to follow an instagram account. Called at Drag Bombs D. R. A. G. B. O. M. B. S. and this instagram account is hysterical is actually run by the brother of a former dressed guests. Terrace ain't James. Who CAME ON SEASON? One and talk to us about the intersection in history a sustainability in the fashion industry but her brother. Jordan. He's hilarious. He is obsessed with repulsed dragway. And He's also obsessed with lush products. The cosmetics Carney and so what he does he finds pictures of drag queens and then pairs them up with the lush product that they're outfit and they are hysterical. Some of them are so dead on and so perfect. I showed it to a couple of my friends one time and I tell everybody to follow this all the time. And they're like oh no he has to be the designer of the products and the drag queens are his inspiration but no no no. No that is not the case. He's just really really good at this. So if you WANNA put a giggle in your day follow Jordan on drag vase and I promise you it's GonNa show Ganic smile at your face. I know and I just speaking of. I've never seen this account so I just went to it. And it's Jordan the Raven Claw Lachey. A master bather and he says no drag. Queens harmed in the making of this account. It is pretty incredible. How spot on a lot of these comparisons are. Wow okay well check that out dress listeners. Instagram accounts for you to follow and check out some other things for you to watch them suggestions of some films. I would like to suggest that I just watched. Actually this past week I came across. It's actually a couple years old but I had not seen it. It's a documentary called my generation. That's streaming on Amazon. Have you heard or seen of that? April I have not but you better bet I'm GONNA put it on my list now. I really really liked it Because it is almost entirely comprised of archival footage and photographs. So there's no there's no inter spicing with interviews of people in the modern day there. They just take those voices from those interviews. It's narrated by Michael Caine. It's kind of like has generation and his experience in the nineteen sixties and he interviews. People like famed photographer. David Bailey models penelope tree Mary. Quant twiggy Vidal Sassoon. People interviewed there so integral to this period. And this this documentary. That's really about in the nineteen sixties it just reveals how integral fashion was to the experience of the nineteen sixties by all these interviews. So I highly suggest checking that

"Lots headlines we didn't get to even a teeny tiny fraction of them. We'll have more stories over the coming weeks. But this was kind of an interesting one, timing wise, a lot of talk about for in in New York and just in fashion circles in general, and if you want to know, what's on the out list, it would be real for Burberry, which has come under fire recently talked about it a couple of weeks because of burning all of their well. Yeah, extra actually said they're not gonna destroy products anymore will gosh what a decision that is. So smart. So they said that. But what I mean, which is kind of like a big like our great good to know. Did they say what they're gonna do with it? They did they said that they vowed to work toward becoming more eco conscious and addressing that consumers want to shop products that are better for the environment. In one of the reasons why if you were to make any sense of any brand destroying perfectly good product, one of the reasons why it is somewhat more common among luxury brands is because they want to avoid bringing down their prices. They don't wind at TJ Maxx. Anywhere on the secondary market. And so they would rather destroy it. So that you have to go by twelve need some. Yeah. You look at all of the innovations today in using materials. Well, jeans. Yes, I mean, all the things people are doing turn us the material to make different products. Try something else if it's not selling. So there's that. And then there's the first story and Burberry shared a post on Instagram this week new era Burberry modern luxury they will no longer use animal for including rabbit, FOX, mink and raccoon as well. As angora wool newly-appointed, creative director Ricardo till she. I I think well, I think it might be well in any event. So. Yeah. And one of several brands that has made the same statement, she Gucci Michael Kors, Tom Ford, furloughs Givenchy all have gone for free. Yeah. But what I thought was interesting too. Is there they're there? Joining designers like sell a McCartney Ralph Lauren Vivienne Westwood, right? We have done this free. Totally and Burberry said they're gonna they'll take their existing for products. They'll be phased out of the stores and the ban will take place immediately. Yeah. So this is their big statement. We think that modern luxury that doesn't take into account the social and environmental responsibility really has. No. Meaning now customers are not happy. If you don't care about the environment. They live. Yeah. Well, they realized that I mean, it took them a little while. I mean, come on. But yeah, I think that's exactly. Exactly true. Yeah. Interest. I tell you me, which you probably didn't see it when I just said Stella McCartney, it reminded me, you didn't see Paul McCartney on Jimmy Fallon the other night. Did you know funny thing he's got a new album out Egypt station or something like that? Anyway, they did it thing where there were people ordinary folk like you, and I are coming up on an elevator to go to a tour and they had the elevator accidentally stop at the wrong floor. And so the doors open, and there are Paul McCartney Jimmy Fallon in one instance, they're sitting reading like a newspaper in the elevator opens in the just put the newspapers down the reaction of the people in another. They're playing ping pong in front of the doors. When the one woman started to get out in the elevator operator grabbed her and pulled her back in because that wasn't allowed. But they did all these funny things with all of these people who had no idea that they were going to be there when the doors. I didn't wanna sing with Paul McCartney. No, he let him saying he just he fan. He was he's a crazy fan and for the first ten minutes. I swear Paul McCartney didn't say a word because he was he brought his old vinyl records to show him. How he had all of these records of his he couldn't even believe that. He was really nice..

"To subscribe analysts in for free welcome to the cabinet of curiosities cast i was going to suggest that maybe we play a little bit of a guessing game as to who this next influential person in jeon she's career might be but something tells me that many of our listeners might already be onto our trail and they might already know who this person is yes agreed because her name and public image are inextricably linked to the house of giovanni she and the popular imagination the two are practically synonymous with one another we are of course speaking about audrey hepburn one of the biggest style icons of all time and she was integral to crafting her image and i love the charming story of how these two met shall we how can we not so the tale is told us such apparently must your does yvonne she was at the tail end of finishing a collection an incredibly busy however hearing that miss hepburn was here to see him and i'm going to tell them the rest of the story in his own words he says quote i was a great fan of katherine hepburn at the time and assuming that it was she who had come to visit me i rushed forward to meet her to my surprise i saw audrey tall and slender in gig him check trousers at t shirt she explained that she wanted me to design all of her dresses for sabrina and this was difficult because i was right in the middle of pairing the collection but i did show her several models which seemed as though they had been made for her he has she apparently just like walked into all of his sample sizes as one doug but this is where it starts to get attacked confusing because while she she did design many of the celebrated costumes audrey war in the film he was not the costume designer that would be the legendary hollywood costume designer edith head and it was edith not jeevan she who won an oscar for her designs for the film so this doesn't entirely seem exactly fair does it i mean an arguably one of the stars of this film is audrey wardrobe yeah and the facts surrounding this whole who gets credit for the costume things changes a bit depending on who you ask if you ask audrey for instance she would tell you that the most famous on samples from this film whereby jeon she and herbert's quote that jazzy suit and that's superb white organdy evening dress with black embroidery that i wore dancing in the winter garden but if you ask on she he pretty much kept more or less silent on this topic for years and have you asked you to head well she claimed that she wants she had little to do with those now icon it looks in sabrina yeah according to the memoirs of heads former protege she told the story as such are drake gave her several sketches of giovanni cheese designs which audrey herself sketched while attending eventually fashion show in paris after insisting to the director that this is what she wanted to wear in the film head was told to recreate the looks and head claims to have altered them to make them her own so that her team created the patterns and that they were made up in local materials at the paramount studios her former friend quotes had telling him i never received a thing from giovanni sheet yet another hollywood scandal we do have to remember that at this time the studio system in hollywood was all powerful so jeevan she was still in his early twenties and the chance to dress and aunts new actress who was actually on the precipice of superstardom this was a huge opportunity for him so it's kind of generally held that he held his tongue about this credits for the designs for the film in order to not buck the system that said she she did finally comment on the subject years later revealing audrey was reportedly show furious at edith for taking all the credit that she declared from then on each time i am in a film jiangxi dresses me and so he did he would actually dress audrey on and off the.

"Rest because you've on she proceeded to land one plummet gig after the next after your year was shocked fath and concurrently studying drawing at the cold abo arts jeevan she left boss to work for piquet in nineteen forty six and this is also the year that he meets one christian your and your head not yet marched his own house yet but he suggested that she she might come join him at his current employer lucian luke and lung he had served as the head of the governing body of the haute couture industry during world war two and i think that we might have mentioned his name in passing some time previous on the show we have certainly and dior suggested that geelong she joint along and then come to work for me after i set up my own shop so she she accepted an off he goes to work for a loan okay i just want to take a side note and talk about something for a minute this is now nine hundred forty six so this means that she von she is eighteen turning nineteen and he's been in the trade for less than two years with little to no previous training so why are all of these very prestigious job offers just kind of flying his way it was kind of like the criminal cram of parisian couture crowd were falling all over themselves to give this kid a job i have a little bit of a theory could it have something to do with the fact that bear givenchy was six five or six six depending on the source and then the words of vogue handsomer than almost any movie star and not to discount she wants us genius because we will stab which by the end of this episode that he wasn't necessarily gifted couturier but i think maybe there were some other interests but jack's path was married he was his wife genevieve was actually his greatest model and muse but is generally held at this is kind of a my wife bonnie situation that waiting for a cuff made reference you just need totally guilty i'm a huge fan of christopher guest to as i'm sure lots of our listeners are as well so for any of you who might not have seen the movie waiting for guffman first of all you should watch it second of all april is referencing the back that one of the main characters is a stage director who is obviously gay but all throughout the movie he makes references to his wife barney who somehow never materializes in other words foss marriage is generally held to be a marriage of convenience and mr jor definitely known to enjoy the company of handsome younger gentlemen and it was just simply not uncommon this time for gay designers to remain publicly closeted throughout their entire professional careers but back to when she yeah so he's at lelong under dealer's recommendation and she moved she was flat out miserable he wants said i stayed for six months but it was a difficult atmosphere so no radios at work here guess not but is this part racket talk about skep really more yes you do but only after we get back from a short sponsor break hi my name's caitlin toronto and my name's jamie loftus and we're the host of the bechtel cast the bechtel cast is our podcast about the portrayal of women in movies each week we invite a guest to talk about one of their favorite movies and we examine how that movie treats its female characters some movies do great most of them do not true so give us a listen we use bad words sorry but hey this conversation past the bechtel tests amazing good for us welcome back back to nineteen forty seven when a young ten year old boy's dream really did come true a decade earlier jeevan she had been fraud with released design showcased at the nineteen thirty seven exposition universal and now she had become his boss and mentor and certainly scap really was in need of an infusion of a bit of useful talent because in her own memoirs she stated that during the years of world war two she was in the us organizing charitable events usually benefiting france and she wasn't really paying attention to what was happening.

"With over seven billion people in the world we all have one thing in common everyday y'all get dressed welcome to dressed the history of fashion a podcast where we export the who what when of why we wear your fashion historians and your hosts cassidy zachary and april callaghan so casts the time has come once again when it's fashion week in paris the very first episode of dress that we did air during paris fashion week during february of two thousand eighteen that this fashion week this one is extra special because it's not just fashion week in paris it's haute couture week yeah and this is a period for about four days when the elite of the elite will present their collections for both the envy and the scrutiny of the world yes and we should make a point to note that presient fashion weeks at haute couture weeks are two distinct events they are purposely held on different dates in order to emphasize the rarefied nature of the oak achier collections so it's really extra special indeed april because a mere fourteen officially sanctioned okura houses appear on the schedule for this week however they are joined by five four member houses and an additional fifteen invited guests in other words fashion houses who have received a federation to coach era at elim odes official invitation to join the distinguished ranks of oca cheer yeah and once invited to join these invited guests they have to wait out a four year waiting period but during this time they can also show alongside of couture's legends include chanel christian dior scarpa rally who relaunched in twenty twelve we did not mention this in our scott borelli episode and they actually regained their haute couture designation in two thousand seventeen and also the house that was once headed by scap release young protege who you might recall from our skep episode broke her heart yes but not in a romantic sort way but it is the one and the same that we will discuss today one of the last grandees of the golden age of couture and the man who's been given the moniker gentlemen coutry uber does she she and as many dress listeners might be aware jeevan sheet sadly passed away earlier this year on march tenth two thousand eighteen at the age of ninety one and despite the fact that he had not sat at the helm of his namesake company for more than twenty years his death was very deeply and the international fashion community yeah and i for one was quite sad that day which which also struck me as a little bit irrational i mean i had never met this man but i have in the course of my job as a curator developed a sense of intimacy with his work just due to the vast number of sketches and photographs and all these other things relating to his work that we have in our collection i don't think it's irrational at all i think we all have this tendency to build intimate relationships with people we've never met mainly because they just inspire in touch us so thoroughly i like you have studied she she's worked for a long time the very fact that his brains revived today speaks to this incredible influence and legacy that he has left us with and she she was one of the very few surviving katina's from the nineteen fifties the golden age of qatar so his death really marks the end of an era agreed i mean when i first found out that he had passed away i texted you immediately when i heard and and you're like wait what so sad and immediately we started plotting win to dr givenchy episode an in memoriam tribute to the late great master ultimately we decided that it might be nice to wait until oko tear week as it was part of an continues to be part of the dna of this she vaughan she brand since the day he opened his doors in nineteen fifty two yup who bear shames toughen does she von she was born in bovay france in february of nineteen twenty seven he was quite young somewhere around the age of three or so when.

"Although stiff royals say what's gospel but you know the big surprise natalie was the designer of the wedding gouge yvonne she nobody expected it was going to be givenchy they were like russo musso and frank or somebody out of their way to say it was designer for givenchy so they went out of their way to say that she is french yoga french or yvonne designer is the first english to be the head of design their and her second gallantries varies was pretty stella mccarthy right right that was great they had lipreaders there and i love the lip reader who at one point prince harry said i could use a drink about now it's hard to tell but they were coming up with some good lines so you believe we have such busy news day the royal wedding didn't even make the big three it didn't we spend ten minutes on it the big three actually this is a huge story i wonder how it's going to go down today the president says today's going to demand an investigation into whether his campaign was spied upon or political gain meanwhile rudy giuliani well he has inside knowledge i would trust him he claims that robert muller's gonna end is obstruction pro by september first so they got all the big political news today when you go down on this so we'll have all day to talk about it but this so called spying on the campaign i think oh well i don't think i don't think the justice department embedded a spy i think trump is playing brilliantly muddy the waters by saying quite legitimate why was this guy talking to people my campaign staff from the from the justice department are looking into the russian were they doing this the clintons was he embedded there i don't think he was but trump is going to muddy the waters i know he's going to go a long way to discrediting whatever conclusions muller comes out with very messy it is very messy there and i do think i hope giuliani's right i do believe that muller should wrap this up before the midterm elections put on the table what he has and let the american people decide for themselves if there was collusion if trump should be impeached if they should vote democrat so they can impeach him let the voters decide.

"I love and on a blind date no less we should all be so lucky to meet the love of our lives on a blind date let him ta cbs news correspondent he's been in the uk covering the royal wedding now one of the biggest questions about the big day as with any wedding was the dress a closely guarded secret his how the bbc commentators reacted on catching sight of it and it looks to be and exquisitely cups and in many ways minimal and traditional bliss with a splendid vail meghan markle the brightest wearing her hair up the veil is being caught in the may sunshine stunning away for the codes you know what i like about it it it does what i said it fuses that sophistication that and shake nece that meghan bring scenario fits that it's that real romance it's beautiful absolutely beautiful it is clear what killer for givenchy's that's amazing congratulations can wait earlier the bbc spoke to unim affi fashion director at the uk newspaper the times about whether megan's choice of designer came as the prize what cala who's the virtuous zeina at the french houses she was a name in the frame because she's a push ana but she wasn't a favorite looking back now i think what we didn't tune is that von she is label with a history of dressing very peaceful very famous americans grace kelly was a fun jackie kennedy worshipful shallows and most noted judge nutri hit the worst von regularly and actually had a wedding dress designed by giovanni for funny face back in the fifties that is somewhat sue.
