"Tonight, from billings, Montana. The U.S. and Mexico. I don't have a ton more to say about this game. I mean, if I wanted to sit here and find negatives, maybe I could, but I don't really have them. I know you. It's funny you had mentioned walker Zimmerman earlier and being pulled out of position. Largely, I actually thought that he was in the second half. He made some huge plays for the U.S. to kind of cut down Mexican chances. He was, I thought, at least certainly in the second half, I get what you're saying about early on him maybe being problematic and trying to keep that press intact. But in the second half, I thought he was a rock for them. It wasn't so much keeping the press intact Andrew. It was like following him and his when he went him and has dropped off. So you expect maybe an aerial combat with their number 9 him and his, but that's not really what happened. He was dropping into the middle and Zimmerman was following him and you saw in the chances you're like, where did this gap come from? That Mexico are now running through. And that was Zimmerman just coming out after him and so once he stopped doing that, I thought he had next link game. And in terms of one V one defending, turns to some of the blocks he made. He was superb. I'm not criticizing. I largely I like that center back pairing. That worked that works for me. Miles Robinson walker's in. Like, I'm good moving forward with that. I think based on last night's evidence, that is something that works very, very well. I like mine's Robinson anyway. I think he's I think his ability to cover ground reads the game very well and he's comfortable on the ball and those are things you need as a modern center back. I think he's got very good. That lineup last night for the U.S.. Stefan included, he didn't have a ton of opportunities to leave his imprint on the game. But when he was called upon, he did everything asked him. He had he had a great game. If everyone is healthy, how many things are different? If this is game one World Cup Qatar, how different would that line up be? Is it only best yet one? Is everything else? Is that pretty? No. Don't forget the starting lineup doesn't have purely again. So yes, you're right. And the other one I'm wondering about, I guess right now, yes, pure psych obviously would start. But like Gio raina is going to have to re earn that spot back in I don't think he starts in this current setup as we sit here and now and that is not a reflection on him as a footballer. He knows speaks to the quality of this team. Look, you can't, there's only 11 spots, right? So I think I honestly my gut tells me that. That Greg bear holder wants to stick with Stefan and gold. I know he says there's very little between him and Matt Turner. I think he wants to stick with Stefan and gold. The fact that he went back to him after Turner did literally nothing wrong in his run of games, suggests plenty about that. Deandre yedlin then for dest is the other one. That midfield axis of Musa, Adams and mckenney that triumvirate rather, that doesn't change for me. Agreed. That doesn't change. The desk the edlin one is interesting. Yeah, searching your desk has done a good job. He's played really well for this team, especially an attack, plays in a good ball. He's a threat. And the thought of him and waya possibly on the same side is if they're both playing the way that they're capable of playing the speed on the right. They're going to recap it. But Deandre edlin, he was called upon last night, and he was excellent. I thought as well. Got beat once that I remember in the second half, but nothing came of it. He's got great, didn't get a yellow card. They were worried about remember they had married clapboard him in Latin America was asked, you think the next time he folds, he would get a yellow. Well, he didn't. He was solid. And if anything, I think he grew into the game. So these are the signs of growth within this team in that the next man up mentality. It's not just, you know, those aren't just three words. Like they actually mean something for the U.S. now because they have this depth. They can have a true next man up mentality because the next guy who's ready to go and fill in a spot is almost of the quality of the players starting above him. And I don't think we've had our concerns, but we advise defensive abilities in the past. But I think since he's been at Rafa Rafa, Newcastle, and then afterwards, obviously, moving on to Galatasaray. I think he's I think he's a solid solid defender. And I wouldn't be concerned about him there. I think the front three is your question, Mark, no. I think peppy stays because he likes him as that center that's central striker. Not because he's not really a center forward and conventional sense. And then purely coming in, how does that upset the ironson where either side where right now is done enough Andrew just from last night showing a lawn to be a starter? I agree. That is, I mean, you know, I work for two way I mean, he went down as an own goal, but he pretty much did everything to create the goal in the previous World Cup qualifier for the U.S.. So he's he's been very good. And last night was the cherry on top performance for a good run for him. I don't like the idea of dropping Brendan aronson when he gives you so much energy and so much running. But.

"I want to see every single one of our teams be competent. And more you know i want to see them have a soccer project that is admirable. I wanna see them connected their community and have people care deeply about their team and the results and everything that goes on within the organization but they got some big big work to do because right now they're saying it and this decision is a direct reflection of that and so i think changes come in certainly on the roster side that a lot of contracts coming up they signed deals with a bunch of guys before twenty twenty. Well it's to figure out how they can reset and they need a hard reset badly all right. Let's get to the us. Men's national team the roster. We'll get the mailbag. We'll get outta here. Charlie what do you think. Twenty seven guys called in by gregg berhalter. No gio raina. No christian pulisic. Those are injury issues. They could come in says gregg berhalter maybe could be called in mid cam. So it's a big tvd on that one two home games for the us In this go round instead of to away games to home one away. It starts on thursday jamaica in the us. And then you're gonna travel to panama always classic there. And then you're gonna host costa rica in columbus to finish it out. It surprises for you on this roster or did all make sense and we could go through the whole thing but by now people have seen it. They've listened to scupper. They've listened to total soccer show. They've got it pretty. Well figured out you do have weston mckennie back. No surprise there. Greg halter saying like he's fully back. We have with our business. We've talked to westin. it's all good. All guys dropped that you thought might be here. Just sergeant dropped walker zimmerman there. James sands not in this team people on this team. Conrad also not in this team you have. Uk based players and. Tim reams stephanou. Nancy robinson is are not going to travel to panama given its status as a red list country quote unquote and the ten day quarantine that's required upon return. Espn's jeff caro carlisle. Excuse me reporting that. One general guebuza was in for welcome qualifying. That's new. But i think the one that you're probably most excited for mussa i am. I was mussa for yunus mussa. Because i was.

"It's a basic thing. Nate him right. If you've got much better players around you and the opposition worrying about them. It's a heck of a lot easier than when you're the best player on the team right. Yeah war with without a doubt without a doubt light when you look at city in that game. I think that jon relish was probably one of city's worst players. I don't think he had a bad game. But i don't think he stood out in the game. It's all yes still. You needed to be respected. Because he jag released coming off the summer the years that he's had so for them for city you know you can afford. You don't have to rely on any particular player when you've got so many players who can step up in any particular moment whereas like i said earlier with chelsea i'm literally looking unless it's a set-piece who you think is going to score. The goals for chelsea open plan is a long show johnson. The you've got a lonzo you have Verna and you have lukaku like that's it so it seems weird but then also with ducal you look at it. And how many games you think you'll look at the season and think that he needs to start with three defensive midfielders. You know what i mean. It's not it's not going to be many. I think that was that was more of a one aspen. Something which will see tweet basis. Because he knows he's not progressive but the opposition is playing against in that moment. I think he just thought that they were going to try and dominate midfield and they went that three and it didn't even come close to work out but i don't expect to see that very often this year from chelsea is you don't need it all right. I want to close out unlike alonso because this is also the weekend that obviously we'll get this later danya malini made his debut. I love the idea of three generations of consoles. Danielle medina. isn't there yet. So as of right now you put the alonso's ahead of the dini's for those who don't recall. Marcos alonso is grandpa won a bunch of european cops with raw madrid. Marcos alonso dad was Win the euros or by spain but anyway he. He lost a european final with barcelona madrid. And so on And for slow now. Obviously and now you have marcus lonzo. Weaning the champion sake. I'm going to throw this out there and it's going to be bad radio because you're not gonna come up with any. There's no other three generation. Good johnson the lagoon sense my well what. Usb doesn't a- either has a kid or who made his debut for the national team in the last international break. Okay this nicely. The kennedy good. Where does he play as good. What did you think he's good. Okay so you've heard very or something. That's more of a john medina's ninety s more now but no one is never going to be my dinnie in terms solve for because the other two so much but yeah okay. It's hard in terms of alonzo is in his twenties now at this stage. She didn't didn't isn't there summerbee. Grandpa who was a useful footballer. Should you know this. Yeah those those. Mike and Nicky summerbee yeah. Yeah i think is india. Grandpa who also played not show unimaginable. All right. tell me i city. Tommy dart's yeah. Yeah yeah that's right. Yeah that's the grandson of what colin i think he's calling my becoming kevin doyle republic of ireland. We'll find you would find either. We've got the grandpa and the people in doyle. I think you need to understand. I'd say this is because okay all right all right but you're wrong. But i think if you're gonna find a love grandpa and grandson but escaped. The father father was rubbish on football. All you're gonna dot and the sun but the grandpa was aboard but to get the three years really ragu johnson maldini alonzo's for right now in terms of the package of the three. The alonso's are still in first place yet. Good yanssons and medina's mike catch up because you're you're only strong as your weakest legs. They're still young. Might get their nadim. Thanks so much Is an absolute pleasure. Also want one less person with the father and the son is cloudy on gio raina. So maybe they'll be something that in the future. There's a lot at the father and son things. I'm talking about the three generation thing you know. We'll wait we'll wait was cloud rain as data footballer. I know i know. I sent some wikipedia coming but certainly gio arenas mom was was a tremendous footballer. As much as i gotta thank you so much. Here's tools a little footnote. Nate has left us. But we are guilty and you know when you make mistakes admitted we did forget the three generations did forget. Thomas buck assad. Yeah hey signed charro. Yeah and grandson jerry talk. That is a legitimate three generation thing. You're not sure in football achievement. They surpass the alonso's. I don't think so. Fans are fans sebastian. Salazar please yes throwing it out saying just a discussion jones got a bunch of kids who might yet come good. Obviously i'm not to mention johnson's dad. Arner good johnson. Yes grandpa here. Who by the way also did the cool thing were in his last game for the national team. Idir came on for him and either was dead. Wins then made these executive month. Okay so the kids so far not in the same conversation daddy or grandpa but who knows it is it is pretty cool. Does speak to genetics and opportunity. And whatever else but but.

"And you know he made important part i think about how could affect team around and trust and this is this a thing about west mckinney here and just play generally i think incidents like these really indicate as hard it is to make a full that is even how to stay like to make it to that point. It's very easy to blow isn't it. Is it absolutely is because you know the temptations the opportunities they multiply look events like this and i think to myself this is just a sign of how how does opportunities the temptations keep multiplying. That makes sense. Yeah i mean. The details of haven't been fully disclosed london. Donovan sounded like. It's been a while since i've heard such kind of big brother. I'm not angry. I'm just really really disappointed. Energy yes it will also like not being funny but that's almost like sort of. There's an element of life youth pastor type thing going on which is like. Don't do what i did. So there's an element of like. That's that's that's you annoyed that individual but also maybe annoyed yourself. I don't know if that's part of it. Also let's get real where the outrage where christian pulisic was jumping on fish well during kickoffs on the endangered fish on holiday. I mean that is interesting about yeah. Individuals accountability. Not inequality equality of outrage. But i mean from a full point of view is quite tricky. Because they've ruined their opening to woke up qualifiers he'll miss the honduras game as will gio raina who's got hamstring issue and starting the world cup qualifying campaign on the back foot with this generation of players in the us. I think his is an ideal. And i think lots may be. I think the people may add or kind of mix the two together with western. Kenny's the weston mckennie thing and then the polls and they'll lump it all together and it'll be a reason especially those host the momentum that comes thing that's frustrating. I think for the us. Men's national team is the momentum. They've had over the summer on the results. They've had the positivity and this is is kind of hitting a bit of a brick wall we follow us-based foot will people and they're a good Those shouts today mazing carlisle. You raising tweets disappointed in your leg of the western anything adoped folk below with an insatiable edged to party is a rite of passage. Start wagging fingers. We've made it so. This is the final evil. If the mets nationally trouble nikki. I want to send. Yes i remember saying is back. In the day the us soccer slash mls will have made it. When we have the gossip and scandals that europe has. Do you know what it's take actually take all is a about a tool because you know this type of behavior is a sign of gentrification extravagance like all the things that you're pimples enjoy for longtime this wild yeah the wild streak we're not condoning but i mean also i mean how does mckinney is twenty three years old. It's a helluva come up enough shark. Lativa is pretty incredible that he got to that point and i just hope he doesn't jeopardize hugely he made because he fought out of a huge choice impact. You think of all the midfield isn't all the agents looking west mckinney vento scoring. How about this the midfield looking at west mccain event. Their agents going that. That matter took me i was ahead of him. In the pecking order on that man may see leap the let the q. Let cu-cuban but yeah i just hoped is doesn't destabilize. The career that he's catholic built himself in the las. Ps if i'm being brutally honest i think it'd be fine. I think it'd be fine. I don't think anyone remembers this year. Or maybe they remembered mainly for the memes if results have been okay during the i if the welcome qualifying maybe it wouldn't have been odell as heavy by things that i mean. We're recording this Ahead of the honduras trip so if they go absolutely them. is fine but i did enjoy the slide. I did enjoy the slightly sour comments that came out from the. Us side about the door against canada. The one gets cut it because it reminded me of the sour comments that came out of being cap off the door against scotland. The scottish like you. The drawer against your. You'd less heralded sibling salty. There was a save a so the us candidate to onsite. This is such us. England scotland energy. The can i discuss it. Just chilling pull a poor result against what you said unless howard sibling and then a scandal within the space of a few days is everything won't edgier so you also have a seat at the table. You knew this was.

"Dangerous. How is he not in the best. Twenty six hurt okay. So obviously gregg berhalter does not see him as a nine sees him as a wide player. Matthew hoppy is also in this limbo situation with this club. So this doesn't surprise me you you gotta let them sort that out and you can't just sign go somewhere and say hey by the way. I'm leaving if you're not an established player right now bundesliga too. I don't mind this look at the players who are in front of me. What do we have in front of matthew. Hoppy you're going to have christian pulisic gio raina. You're going to have who else do you have. Brendan errands and who's been absolutely on fire timmy. Way he had a great gold cup but versus gold cup opponents. These other players have been noonan at a higher level so with this club situation. I think it lends himself for. Maybe it's between him. And conrad. And if conrad establishing that clubs situation. Maybe greg hold a conversation with them. Fix your club situation. We'll go from there. Look you want to sing. George bellows praises. How does he get the call up. He doesn't surprise raise and doesn't get it on gold cup performance but you asked me. I said yeah that surprised me okay. What about george. Bello is surprise. Because he's there. Because of the position. Because i think what's really interesting. Is you basically look at him desk. You got two or three outside backs. Everybody else that they brought in on defense. And he brought ten defenders. He's got seven players who are all centrebacks or potentially centrebacks in back three does that tell us what formation wealthy formation. He's look he's looking at probably working at it three centreback formation and players who could potentially be part of that i was also surprised at james sands is on this list. Not the james sands is a bad player. But i didn't think he had a great gold cup. Wants the competition got stiffer. I thought he struggled even the all star game yesterday. You saw there's still some things in his game sometimes. Where maybe. He's a little over competent. Maybe he's not as great a defender as you think he's very good. Pass another back. Sometimes that that'll get you in trouble. I was surprised that maybe a chris richards for example wasn't on this list. Chris richards i. I know it's a club situation.

"Their blazing on the counter. I've not seen a duo like this bear with the because it's very difficult to try to compare compare these two. Okay ronaldo rivaldo two thousand and two is my comparison of these two and then by the way sidebar. Is it legal or geo. Rena getting bigger taller. What are they these kids in germany. You saw him next to early collins the other day. It's like they're almost the same size electricity's th th the pace the technique the ability from these two. It gets me excited known. Gio raina gets to do this alongside early in holland and it's exciting. Because you know there's going to be a lot more goals and a lot more assists and that's always gonna drive up. His valium probably interest in them. You would assume as well from from other bigger clubs although hey right now dortmund at age. Not a bad place to be at all one thing. I wanted to point out because we had european clinton on the show on the post game show. We were doing doing the match in studio for espn afc and the thing that he said the stuck to me. Was they smell each other. Ed really likes you. Feel that when you watch these to play. They instantaneously without looking in a blind sense where each other are and are looking for each other. And if i'm somebody that's investing stock gio rain and i see him playing this closely at early holland who. I love it because it is fun to watch. It's only going to accelerate his developed. And you talked about that bromance. Bromance is the one thing that only didn't have they actually didn't like each other very much off the field these to do and you can tell you can just see the way they enjoy playing with said they smell into. They look for each other all the time. Yup yup all right. So let's get to more news from around the bundestag. Another american making an impact maybe not.

"Out of the starting line of the reality of being at a big club like chelsea next on the americans who scored in europe list giovanni rain and now he did it in somewhat spectacular fashion. Maybe not the goal of the game itself. A five two win over eintracht frankfurt. He gets the start he gets the goal. He's wearing that beautiful number. Seven taking over from jaden sancho whose goal comes off insist from his new best friend erling holland who by the way had himself an amazing game two goals and three assists and after the game her. The budding romance between these two was on full display. Unbelievable you saw today Unbelievable i guess if the right word. Special just amazing. His point team Goals assists hungry. Team player works team. So yeah we're so happy to have him and You know hopefully this is just start for for him. And for all the The attackers going forward this season as a five goal despite today hopefully you can keep it going season. Gio raina early the next big tag team in world football What say you. I mean it certainly looks that way right you early and jalan us to gina. They definitely understand each other to actually enjoy playing against you. They have a lot in common. Both their dad's play demand city. Their sons up footballers they're eighteen and one the other one's twenty one adolescent still very young and the enjoying the way they play electrifying.

"Eintracht frankfurt going up the other end and it ends up being an goal class laugh because was to make a don't think he's trying to pass it to keep what he's trying to make a challenge and ultimately buzz nothing classical goal. This was a brilliant transition from dortmund and all the players involved. You know how well they do link kaufman. How quickly they can break and on this occasion it's talking hazards. He puts the finish at again. Don't shoot little he'll do mr holland's to the bundesliga we can get away with. How do till until he's been involved in all the action so far. Ball's going the pitch. It's in the thirty s. He breaks through and he finally takes to defend the one we against. This young man is hesitant. Right if you hesitate let the ball bones. He's going to be on it like a flash because he's begging strong and he anticipates it will fifty eight of a scramble in the books. Here say keyarena calling for does come to him already. Obscene this arabia not as a pause zayd as a pass deflected into here are poss- possible as i don't wanna strike posses from right. They've got a nice connection knows too though. Haven't they actually going from the both after this game anyway. Let's get you saw once again. I'd say it does brilliantly here. Triple i mean he's very tight. It was brilliantly here as just go straight across the defender. What just cut make a challenge penalty and he's just begging strong and once again finish his sublime up this guy already race. Returning the favor on that occasion jens peter how did manage to get a goal laugh for eintracht frankfurt. Finished five two. But let's hear from highland gio raina speaking interested into the game. Okay archie archie and myself. We're doing this interview together at alley. And i got to stopped with you three assists two goals on your sisters your youngest sister. They were here for the first time. Tell us about that. A good feeling. They are sitting there my family. The team most important going forward for us. He's so important counter goals assists team player. We're all really really happy to have him so we're looking forward to the season as team and we're looking forward to creating more goals together. So now he has to do it in return. But also you and these guys right now and royce your served for the first call. You make three today whole important. Is that for you because you want to serve his back from these boys. Yeah of course. I would see. This is the way to to get the back to give them some So of course it's important to To play wherever. I should lay in where the best opportunity here. So what did it mean to you to get your goal today. It looked like it wasn't given it was given what was going through your mind now. I was pretty pretty positive. I was on side. That's why celebrated but Yeah i was in the right place at the right time I just kinda extended the lead so important for the team and it was the first game where the goal and you know. We're looking forward to tuesday. Now you've got to say your status your scoring goals for fun over over a long period of time now. You stopped at a new season this week in the first game two goals today three essays tried to explain to the crowd. How do you get to isolate motivation. Let's go through last question to boys because you winning the cup. Last season. this season via munich luke. Luke i'd be. I'd be the weaker because all people lost three or four. His deceased talk. We've got to say to themselves. This year we can win the bundesliga by on still still top team in the world so Let's say go easy on that one but we will try to improve. We will see. We will see on tuesday sending so this team can win the bundesliga right now. On the question we have a very good squad. no obviously by has been incredible last decade. So it's hard to say. "Cap had a great tournament. Fief was one of the better players industry. I don't care what you think about qatar. And how they're not a world power. He had himself a tournament very good player when it comes to distributing the ball cyst scoring goals there this morning taken a lot of heat but he was clearly the best nine in this tournament and in the fall. That could be a default choice to Well it's not default if you look at the overall field and that's what because because maybe he wasn't the standard of what most mexican nine in this tournament and can we talk about on buchanan by the way zoo nightmare for defenders and he was playing in a position i put him in my left wing hughes playing in a position where he was an outside. Wingback a wingback in three centreback midfield for our back line for what was candidate and he was ridiculous again he did just did whatever he wanted against mexico. I thought he had himself and outstanding tournament. Yeah that goal against mexico. Easy did he make it. Look i mean it looks like a player almost like sixty percents speed going right by the mexican defense and eventually finishing the goal in that two one defeat all right so let's get to our twitter battle. Yes i'm not really a twitter battle at a twitter wound. I think that we opened up he. Us and mexico fans and it all comes down to your pretournament labeling pre-tournament yes preterm labeling of this us squad as as a c- squad right as a as a c team and so yesterday on twitter you put out some of our content saying that c team of the us had beaten a mexico eighteen and some mexico fans started. Kind of say way really really. Is this really a c team and you dismissed it. So i challenged you on twitter. I said okay. Build me on eighteen and to be team without any of these gold cup players. Okay so i can't use any twenty four players that were called up for goldco. Okay because what i did. I did not use players for the seat team. And i actually only use players that gregg berhalter at one point has used on the us. Men's national teams. All these players have played. They're not randomly pick. And here's the best part. I didn't with zero major league soccer players. Just those things a little more because those players played in gocha twelve thirteen. Excuse me 'cause kesse was added had never debuted with the senior national team. Twenty of the twenty four played in major league soccer. He go zack. Stephanie goal genial destined a lot Jon brooks and chris richardson the center yellen. Forget about who you think should be. Just concentrate on this yard line. "Stratosphere of what is possible. How good this group is. And i think they all are cognizant of the inexperience that they're just getting started. They they know yes to trophies have been one this summer but they're nowhere near the finished product and that it's it's it's all about the process taking it week by week and world cup qualifying because great broad. There's going to let them know it's great. We accomplish this summer but we start back at ground zero. Come september in el salvador. Where it's going to be. You're going to be really tested. It's an improved el salvador aside. The one that i think grew within this goal cup gives them an idea of what it takes to qualify for a world cup. They're going to have to come in with that mentality of. We're going to do whatever it takes to win. It might not be pretty and most likely won't be but we know exactly how to get results especially in concha calf and we need to go there and try and win. That's what the i think the mentality of this group is. We're going to win. We're going to win every game and we think we can win. When we're at our best so i think from that perspective on the players. Everyone feels okay. We're in a good spot. I'm i'm vibe with my guys is like a family and that's the culture piece that we've talked about an from greg berhalter's point i think he came in with clear with a clear identity with a clear mission. I'm going to get the most out of my guys. I'm going to put them in a position to succeed. I'm going to see them grow. I'm gonna talk to him about the ups and downs throughout training and the goal cut. He's got them together. They all believe in the coach now. So when when a coach goes out and tells you. Hey we're playing this formation over switching this there's no question Yes coach you know what he's doing whereas i've played with coaches who make those changes and everyone is looking at like this guy is not. He's doing this guy has no idea what he's doing. He's is killing us. That's not the case because the proof is the trophy. When you have the trophy behind you now. I listen to me. I know what i'm doing. And that's what i love to see in this game. I'm just curious as you think. We'll get the game plan in the way they approached it. Does anything translate into world cup qualifying. What does yes i do. I think it's because it kinda kostas performance in particular that you can say all right. We went with the three four three against mexico in the nation's league final to start the game. I know that because kellen akasa can cover so much ground in. If tyler adams is healthy. I can play with tyler as a six and callanan weston mckennie slightly in front of him and then all three because they had the ability to cover so much ground and it reminds me of that the four four two we played with brought bob bradley in two thousand nine thousand and ten when you have two players who can go up and down and cover so much ground. It allows everyone else to kind of be free. And especially with tyler adams mckinney acosta now christian pulisic has a licensed to rome. We know gio raina how he likes to go as plays an inverted. Winger come.

"Taylor. Toronto terada and then we went back and forth on that. It's happened with brad marchand. Who wanted to be brad marchand for a while. Now he's back to being marsh. And it's i just don't i don't mean to be i'm trying my best. We're calling him pulisic anyway. He scored a penalty kick. That won the game. Three to this game was chaotic in multiple ways. In the main way you know that is that. I'm talking about us. Men's soccer on this podcast. There were a lot that happened. Here's a storyline. Ethan horror bath. He's a kid. Grew up a half an hour from the stadium. The game was played in denver. He's a backup goalie he was never supposed to play. He had played a total of two hundred and seventy minutes for club and country since january but he had to come into the game. Because zack stephanie was injured got them to extra time with some great saves and then in one hundred twenty four th minute. He saved a penalty kick in secured. The win good for him. Good job ethan. Performance by ethan. Horvath very exciting christian pulisic's penalty kick. God is just gonna every time. I see it's running up to a cliff and being like just jump a but i always stop the obviously. He's the biggest star. He wasn't that big of a deal throughout the game. But obviously that penalty kick was a moment. People remember it. It was huge. He came up in the clutch. He took his shirt off and he celebrated any shushed the fans who were a problem which we will get to in a little bit. The other goals were from weston mckennie and an eighteen year. Old gio raina. So like it was a mckinney. Had a fantastic game. Raina had a game after the penalty. Kick okay when they were celebrating. There was a lot. There's so much to happen. It's hard to know what order to go before the penalty kick happened. There is a video review that caused the manager the mexican team. Tom martino to get a red card and get kicked out of the game because he put his arm around the official while the official was watching the replay. All right then the final moments. This was actually before that maybe after the final moments of the second half the refs had to stop the game because the fans were doing a homophobic chant it lasted like three minutes and the players were pleading with the fans to please stop so that they could keep playing the game. If you're curious to know concha caps protocol or the rules on that First step is a warning by the public announcer and that happened around halftime. The a guy came on and was like stop doing that. Chant and they warned them and they didn't stop and so then they were like now. We're stopping the game. It's not the first time that this has happened It's the second tournament match of this tournament to be held to do to anti-gay chance at this. Very field. With mexico men mexico semifinal win over costa rica was also briefly paused and several fans were rejected from the stadium so i would say net bad news. The chant happened good news. Somebody we did something about it. It's not the best something obviously. We've got more work to do. I'd love for those chance to not exist but it is. This feels so cynical but it's kind of a relief to be like. Wow a somebody who didn't have to do the right thing. Did the right thing. That's the thing is you can never. We've you know what of issues and people say. How can you stop this new. You can never prevent them from chanting or throwing something that you just can't prevent that but the actions taken afterwards can maybe prevent things going forward and the people players stopping and speaking up in what teams and organizations do can't help going forward so it's good to see that they did this. I agree. I will say you know mexico. This is a story line that tends to Hover around your national team. So let's figure out what's going on and fix it please. Thank you very much This happened in march. We'll in march. Fever opened the investigation into a anti-gay chanting by mexico supporters during an olympic qualifier against the dominican republic. So like maybe If you guys could just like have a meeting in figure out what's up and fix out a memo that fix just fix it. Stop doing it after the penalty kick Gio rain at the eighteen year old. That i told you score that eighteen nineteen eighteen right. It's like i say eighteen and the my brain is like. There's no way that just goes to show you how impressive it is. You got hit in the face with something because fans were throwing cops in bottles of water and various objects onto the pitch. He got hit in the face. Something on the ground for a few minutes and then he left with trainers. He came back later after the win. So he's okay and then a fan ran on the field. I believe shirtless not full. Nude i don't think didn't have assured ongoing for jersey swap. I imagine tackled by security over the off of the media set. It was a mess. This game was an abso mess. And i don't wanna do this next thing but it also feels like shit show. Just skip it. Somebody tweeted something that made me very mad about this. I just want to say. I watched maybe three minutes one because i was tired but to i was able to find the game but then within two minutes of the game starting. Usa down one. Nothing is like this this where we're going to go and like i have zero trust with this team or whatever you wanna call. 'cause they're all different platelet. Whoever makes up that The united states men. That's jim i've zero trust in. You know there's only one. I wanna say one. Maybe two players on the team that were on the team. When we didn't qualify. So it's not. I mean the anger. The really is like a brand new to residual anger at the men's national team. This was exciting. This was an exciting win in the sense that like the surreally young team and we need a young good team. Yes see i. I used to follow.

"Platform after sunday night's instant classic between the men's national soccer teams of the united states and mexico. Our friends spencer hall tweeted a guy jumped off the broadcast and presumably straight into hell and it wasn't the tenth wildest thing i counted at least fourteen things that were arguably wilder not including first time commentator and longtime us hero. Clint dempsey's camouflage sports coat in the end. The usa came from behind twice to win three two on a christian pulisic penalty kick in like the four hundred and thirty third minute of play and collected the very first concacaf nations league championship trophy. Joel you never forget. Your first concacaf nations league championship the relatively low stakes however should not obscure either the utter insanity of this match or what it indicated about the future and even present of the men's team which sir rather significant i think you watched. Did you order a weston mckennie jersey right after the game because you should have you know he was born in little elm texas out a you know a. I'm just now learning this weston mckennie person but you said low stakes. The way people reacted yesterday. I thought that this was actually meaningful in some sort of way that admitted you qualified for the world cup or i don't get confused because there's so many concha caf competitions in the. Us team is on tv every few months. And everybody gathers around the tv to root for them and everybody gets really excited dramatic about the result. And then you find out. Oh wait actually doesn't have anything to do with welcome to soccer. Fandom joel matters because there are so few games right so this was an actual competition though and there is this distinction that between like a friendly match or match where you know where the managers trying out new players and something that actually has a title so you know i said relatively low stakes because no it's not qualifying the world cup. This was a bullshit manufactured tournament that is designed to generate some tv revenue in the absence. Sort of instead of a friendly match that has no prize attached. But josh there were real stakes here and that was like are all of these young terrific european-based players who are being thrown on the field together for basically the first time in any meaningful competition and in the run-up to the qualification for next year's actual world cup. How would they do. How did they do. Are you getting ping pong back and forth between calling in meaningful and meaningless about six to eight times getting meaningless. The the game itself and the what it portends are meaningful. It is possible to hold those two contradictory thoughts at once. Yes we're a complicated people with complicated thoughts so it was the first quote unquote competitive match for the us. Men's national team over five hundred days and it was meaningful for the fan base. Because there's been this sense of anticipation of will this be the generation fan to both kind of redeem it. The failures of the team that lost trying to add in two thousand seventeen and didn't make the world cup but also in a larger sense to bring the united states. Men's team to international glory and mexico is the measuring stick and has always been and probably will always be the measuring stick for the usa. Men's national team and it's gone back and forth of who's been the most dominant in the region. But i think there is always this anxiety about how we stack up against the mexican national team especially team. That's been really strong in recent years. And so that's why there is so much anticipation around this game. And that's why this victory i think is meaningful and not just to fans but you get the sense joel from watching the game and the reacting to it that it was really meaningful to these players to like. These guys had never played together in a game like this. And the fact that the goal scores were christian pulisic weston mckennie gio raina who are sort of like the leading figures of this new generation that also felt meaningful. We have to take your word for it right. it's meaningful familiarizing. Myself with the fee for international rankings. And because i was like okay excited about beating mexico even though this is a meaningful or meaningless match. We don't quite know the stakes. But i was like okay. Well let's see how good mexico actually is in. Mexico was ranked eleventh in the most recent fifa rankings. Us was number twenty. And i'm like okay. I guess that sounds pretty good. Like if the us is ranked somewhere between ten and twenty. Does that mean that they're returning to glory. Or you know what i mean like. I don't i just don't understand. I think the rank the fifa rankings are always kind of fraught but in particular since they haven't played a competitive match in more than five hundred days. I think the number of data points that we have to rely on about how good the uss but how good like really any team is right now. So i think this was kind of measuring stick for them. Obviously like you said. I mean the players were obviously hyped about it although i i can't imagine like as an athlete if you play and so international competition with some attached steaks and you win and that dramatic of a fashion that it wouldn't resonate to you not make you excited like i can totally get that but guess the thing is for me. Is that american soccer. fame's are always like living and dying by the results of the next game and it means something fans of any other team actually not because like basketball baseball. Maybe less football but like each week doesn't necessarily mean that you're gonna it makes it reflects onto the legacy of the upcoming team with it. The trajectory of team. Sometimes the game is just a game but in soccer. I'm finding out in particularly with the us men's national team that we don't feel that way that every game is a referendum on the status of the national team status in the world. And i mean. I guess it's sort of confusing to me to keep up with the last time. We did a segment on the us national team. They in one game and lost the game in the same weekend because there were two different thing than like people were frustrated with the us national team and all of a sudden. They weren't so like i guess. It just seems sort of exhausting to figure out which of these competitions actually matter in. Which should i take a lesson from because it just seems like every time it's different that's the beauty of international soccer. Joel i mean it really. Is you got to ride the wave of of emotion. A sort of a sign over value to every game. And that's kind of what it's about because look if you're the coach of the men's national team gregg berhalter of the us in this case who was not a beloved choice. He's like the brother of the one of the chief executives of us soccer at the time when he was hired. He's an american when there was a lot of clamor for the united states to go hire a prominent international coach who could nurture stars who were playing on top clubs in europe. The biggest collection of americans playing in top leagues overseas ever. So you don't play that many games. His job is largely recruiting and planning so every game does have this added meaning and then the mexico rivalry which i think you have to be. Blind not to see is incredibly intense. Both in the stands and on the field players don't like each other even if they don't know each other that well i mean. I mentioned that. I mentioned spencer halls tweet at the top but the game was insane. I mean mexico's scores a minute into the game..

"We which is still the best pass in. Us national team history. It was right now. What's coming for it. Yeah right It was raina who got her. And maybe mcbride yuccas mcbride got elbowed broke his face long game. So it's i mean it's it's it's unquestionably a classic. And i. i do think it is one that we will sit in in talk about in reference for at least the next decade I mean dude ran onto the field like we had. We had somebody invade the field and it's not like the the tackle on him was absolutely amazing and like it's not even in the top fifteen of crazy stuff that happened in the game. I mean there might have been plummeted off the cbs set. We don't know what happened to this guy. Wh-why invaded pitch or a set. Please people come on respect personal and private space but like i'm dempsey watched this dude go over an edge. We don't know what on the other side of that edge clean. I play by the white capcom as usual common. Big moments I've forgotten until five minutes before we start recording this that arapahoe and gregg berhalter physically got not answered altercation but arouse coming off the fields running after ball greg together to play it back quickly and around whole pushes him which would have been the biggest moment. If you remember it happened with pepin ranaldo one time and it's all anyone talks about for three weeks and i forgot it happens because so much else went on after it. Berhalter berhalter is so active on the sideline. Eli me involved trying to get ball and get it to his players. Quick for quick throw ins can play case sneakers. You gotta be careful. there's another. there's another pair coming from from the manufacturer. Clint dempsey alone was like you know with the sunglasses and all that he's jacket attache. There was a lot to look up before we get into sort of the nitty gritty. You do have to say like throwing things on. The field is never acceptable period. I know that. I assume that the people that are listening to the show right now. Understand that we've talked about it before So yeah there's that and then you also saw the the protocol in this one latest. Well kopf the mexican federation. A lot of folks trying to eliminate This champ we know particularly in this month and look every single day of the year that it's it's just not something that should be happening anymore. And i hope they find a way to end it but I don't know that we have any power. Over that are that are words will make particularly A big difference there so that must be said but the entertainment factor in this game on the field very high scuffles per ninety out of expected scuffles and even higher level. I mean it was all of it really delivered but in the end it was christian. Pulisic the had this moment and this photo. And i wanna shout out and i think we should shout out and say his name as often as possible because this is really art. Christian marchena is a photographer. The took the photo. You're seeing going around and we talked about it a lot last night Put this thing in the move. The matt wherever it is. Give me a print for the wall behind me. Your joy is overflowing. I can feel your joy. But you're trying to not vocalise it as much so i would say in the history of great silent screaming games or moments the horvath penalty safe tonight. It vaults to number one on my list of silence screams great moments. That occurred after midnight. Where i'm afraid. I'm gonna wake everybody up in my house. This is now number one in the silent screaming power rankings and it passes probably from the last epic us mexico match when bobby woods scored late again. That the us wound up losing in the concacaf cup final But when bobby would score that was also super late and that was also a rated very highly on the silent screaming meter but this tonight the penalty. Save from horvath this game. Jj obviously you me all of our listeners. We've seen a lot of usa mexico over the years. These teams play a lot. They meet in high stakes games. A lot. I'm trying not to be prisoner of the moment i'm going back in my head and i'm thinking about the last twenty to twenty five years and i don't know i don't know if i can think for from the american fan perspective. I don't know if i can think of a better one. This was epic tonight. Oh a better one. I mean when you're talking about the pre pre game. I think someone brought up the the twenty seventeen one. One draw in the azteca. So you're kinda in that zone. There's not being that many of them. There's been exciting games but usually the us men's national team out on the wrong side of it. I'm thinking of the gold cup in twenty thirteen with the giovanni just scientists absolute goal lonzo game. Yeah but one of my favorite of all time. Except it was against the us And then the confederations cup playoff. Twenty fifteen again at the rose bowl but again that was that was the defeat the us came up the wrong side and that one this is a this was such a huge amazing game and when you think of how the game started and you think of all the twists and turns in this one just amazing an amazing game on i'm well daunted to the us to to get some silverware. That is look. this is a tournament. I want to place the tour to context because people will say you know there'll be people out there who are not us fines and they'll be what what's what's the big deal about. This is a maki opie tournament. Like when it when it was announced we had so many listeners. What is this. Why is this happening now. And it was basically to copied european model of making friendly's competitive and worthwhile and filling international windows big games but from the defeat in toronto then turning around at home and now the big long hiatus between the group games the semifinal and the finals it's been an odyssey but this is silver where for this young team and like i said on last week's pod it doesn't matter that is the concacaf champions are nations league or whatever you wanna call. This is important because it's a big win in the big spot against mexico that that is huge. Tell me if this makes sense to you. What i'm about to say. Oftentimes in in any level of competition in any sport the the caliber of the competition gives the game meaning. I think what we witnessed tonight is the rare occasion where the complete and total opposite of that is true where the intensity of the game is. Now what has given this competition. Meaning like you're right. Everything you just said about when this tournament was first announced. Oh this is silliness their turn. They're trying to do this just to make friendly's boost tv ratings or whatever revenue and we all kind of mocked it but my god i mean those two teams out on that field tonight. They were were. They not desperate to win this game. An all one hundred percent. I was doers. Such an intensity like you said to the game from that from the very start from both sides sometimes it manifested itself in in nervous energy. And we'll get to that because this was not this. Fire from grit. Us performance might not even have been a very good one in terms of what we're now expecting in this new era of us soccer with the young players coming through but that aside the intensity was there There was a lot of players out there who i felt really got. We talked about a baptism of concacaf. Fire against doris well. We saw a baptism and a lot of that. Baptism was in beer on the sidelines beer plastic cups water bottles for some of these young. Us players. and i mean if they had any doubt as to what the this rivalry is now fully understand it by the end of this one hundred twenty minutes i guess was just like a certain level of concacaf. Chaos that surrounded this game tonight. That just kind of took it to almost a different level and you mentioned the beer bottles and all that that's straight up and it's hideous. Gio raina was hurt then late on When pure was down in the corner more of it. And it looked. Like i couldn't tell who but mexican player wound up getting hit by projectiles. That's it's disgraceful. But even on remarking was it boy one but even beyond that you had. I mean goals the craziness of the goals aside a second minute goal too late controversial penalties one of which was saved just like the madness of the game itself but at halftime you had a fan charge. The cbs set and jump over a railing. By the way. Do even know how far that railing drops that guy could be dead for all we know. All many fans run on the field. This was utter chaos in denver tonight by the way if that guy had that burst into the to the back of the cbs studio had anything political are had any kind of point he wished to make. Nobody got us and nobody heard it. I mean it would be nice if simpson style as he vaulted over the side. You could hear. I regret nothing exactly. No it was wild tonight..

"Of course, wraps have been having some issues with positive test cases of COVID are there were no new? Tests in the last three days via Jeff Carlisle over at. ESPN. So full team training is planned according to Carlyle for this Monday as the first since the twenty four, th of September big TVD on Wednesdays L. AFC match as well. All the information the news- enlists soccer dot com beverly has it gets well is doing well, we are recording just so you know because things my God and this year. Pretty fast. It is. Okay. Mic My clock sister to eleven fifty nine eastern. That is on Monday October fifth. So you're listening to Michelle when we release it is already obsolete. Yes. Hours later. Zealand is now in the north and Mars is currently sitting right on top of us. And it's so bizarre that Americans in Europe are just you know the land for clubs like Barcelona they're starting at right back for you. I don't know Byron UNIX. They're getting three assists as a seventeen year old for our bruce. Doorman. It's weird. It's a different reality. It's a beautiful thing. We all watch major league soccer. We love it. That's the show is about you probably getting tired or maybe you are of talking about Americans Canadians abroad but my God. Chris Richards. Is I start for buying beautiful Gio Raina running a Bundesliga game at seventeen basically using erling Haaland as his personal goal toy. Guns for his really start, right? Yeah. This is all good feel. Again, every weekend feels like another like high point it's incredible. This is unquestionably highpoint I think there's a good argument to be made that this was the best weekend in Yanks abroad history again, maybe go back to. Go ahead and this is without Christian Pulisic starting he did make a sub appearance. McKay didn't even get an opportunity to play. Win. Get started on. Searching Yo desk makes his debut for for Barcelona Janas finally makes his pro debut for Aaron Wien. He's a product of the. Galaxy Academy. It's exciting. It's I have A. Million Times is what I've wanted to see the League become for the past twenty five years is this league could take the raw material. So to speak here in the United States and Canada and and get it on the field in prove that there is a pathway from mls to the very top of the club game in Europe and at the same time like we yeah, it would be fun. If you're an SE Dallas van and you've got to watch Chris Richards must in mckennie you know everyone else on the field in Frisco this weekend but that's not how the club game works. It's just not. But while that's happening while MLS, teams are selling these great players on developing these these great players the gap is actually narrowing as well. So you get these two benefits. It's a win win situation. It's fun is why we talk about it every single week basically and I will say one particular thing about Raina I I wrote year and a half ago after watching him with the seventeenth of Bunch with NYC AFC Academy teams a bunch he was both the best and he was my favourite and my least favorite US youth national team prospect because what he can do in terms of getting on the ball in tight spaces in dealing with the physicality of the game beating guys off the dribble. You can't teach that to the level that he has that. At the same time? He was selfish he did not have. Even, average vision. He didn't break lines with his movement off the ball. Now he's not a complete product yet, but he showed in that game that Dortmund has taken the raw materials and is starting to turn him into someone who can. Just control a.
