And i had to kind of like almost feel like i had to go sit in a different share or something. You know something to change it up. Because i'm not used to having actually write about those guys that play on the defensive side but but it is it is interesting. This is where the turnover has come from. Yeah he make this point very early in her piece this is. This is the area where they've done the most. This is the area where they've said goodbye to more icon players over the last year and a half. This is an area that for me as far bigger question mark. Because i come back to this all right best case are they going to be a great defense. No are they going to be a top ten defense. No so best case there are middle of the pack. Maybe bottom in the middle of the pack which okay. Fine if you give me that. Then i think joe burrow got a chance. I've done the very very simple equation of defensively. I think they gave up twenty six point two points per game last year if that can come back by three points and they could increase their points per game out output by the offense by three points. They're gonna have close to a five hundred team. I would settle for that. But best case is rarely the most likely case. And so what i do. Fear is that there's still at least very distinct possibility that this season is littered with thirty eight to thirty five losses. Because they can't stop anybody. Maybe i i tend to really like a lot of the things they did defensively and there's the unknowns of trying to put it all together i mean the term. We've been using lot microwaving the defense i mean they're just trying just throws what we're doing in this room right. Yeah yeah this is not a soft defrost wearing towels. Yeah but they're trying to they're trying to put all the pieces. I liked the pieces trying to put them all back to get. And here's the thing dislike anything they did from a personnel standpoint. What i don't know besides jesse bay to the difference makers can be well. Here's the problem is they. Were getting they were getting zero. And i mean as close to zero as possible production from your to into your defensive pass rushers and when that's the case you got nothin' did we not just spend the last decade talking about how gino atkins was the absolute game changer. That was the the beginning point for everything that happened on defense. You know i was listening to. It was a great podcast. That's called flying coach. Peter schrager is doing. Sean mcvay talk coaches and in fact we how aaron. Donald is the best cornerback in a leader. This is a great point. Yeah it's like look you're just you're decreasing the time to bengals. It's you know, it's Richard Sherman, Steve Nelson. Then you get guys like DJ Hayden, then Josh Norman. Buster screen. Brian Poole, Michael Davis for Shot Breeland, You know, really good player, right? And some of these guys guarding the caliber United, you know, we know their names. You know. Nicole Roby Coleman, Nichelle Roby Coleman. Um We know their names, but the Bills Pro Personnel department know these guys. And they'll know which guy what his strengths and weaknesses are. What kind of guy he is. They'll have a whole file on him, and they'll have a dossier on whether he fits their scheme or not. So some of these guys are probably Off the list because they don't fit the scheme. Some of them. Will fit in a in a big way. And that and this list Particularly after June 1st. NFL cuts expected to be a ‘massacre,’ ‘bloodbath’ next week
"We are on the fringe. We're nearing free agency. Actually just read a very interesting to tweet about a nfl coach. Saying that next week was gonna be a bloodbath. with the cap situation Do the covid that it's going to be a very interesting year. A lot of people are going to be getting cut prior to free agency to free up room. So we'll see what happens In you know the free agents were talking about might not even be like the big guys you know we end up signing at the end of the day so one big name we have been talking about and you specifically talked about this guy. Quite a bit is joni From new england the patriots are not going to use the franchise on him again. They can't do it. They they're cap situation would allow forward. I believe but with what you end up making the second time around. It really doesn't make any sense to them. As i was listening to boston. Sports radio their day like they were talking about that. Very topic so loonies. He's a big name. being fans. Love is a big often. Attack was out there And they've got to think about bringing their own guys. Back to william jackson in kara lawson entering free agency. So that's a big big names in some big money right there. What what can really afford to do. So that you you hit the list You hit you hit the big players. They're they have of course two big guys. Internally that are scheduled to be free agents in jackson and lawson one of those may end up getting the franchise tag. Probably the non-exclusive. If i had a bad at this point i'd probably say it's carl lawson and and we don't know the exact figures yet but they'll come out soon what the values will be But it's based position and since deandre get paid a little bit more than corners. Speed deanne tag is going to be a little higher. But i think that's a cost of the bengals are willing to take just to avoid the risk of losing carl. Potentially at an already weakened spot you know masterpass russia's spin has been existent Especially last year And i think room on bengals dot com had a couple of comments today from an article today saying they're looking to shore up the pass rush and he didn't mention actually edge rusher cement of course interior pressure which was good to see liu mentioned and we can talk about some interior linemen. Who are going to be on the market that could provide some interior. Pass rush to collapse the pocket if you will but to your question about what. They can't afford i. There is a way for them to structure these contracts with the amount of space that they have available. Of course we don't know what official cap will be just like we don't know what the tag amounts are going to be. We don't really know the final numbers quite yet. We know the cap can't go below one eighty But let's assume it stays right at that floor. I been under the working on the assumption that it's going to creep up to one eighty five rather optimistically but who knows if it gets that high. Is you mentioned kobe. Kobe tope took all essentially all the local revenues that these teams generated and made it two zero for almost all of them. There are some teams based on the cities and state. They were in that allowed some attendance. That really you know. It was a small percentage of what a normal season would be. So they're sitting in a good spot. Relatively speaking in terms of current cap space. There are about thirty seven million once you account for the almost eleven million. They rolled over last year. So at that point if they just stay there. They're they're currently line to be seventh most in cap space and that's a lot to work with in terms just resigning those guys internally and then going out on the market for tuning type of player ariba some more mid tier guys in the bond bell mold last year. You know a more of a modest deal where you get a lot of value in that regard but if they ended up staying put without making cuts and being seventh and cap space that gives them a lot of flexibility. But i think to your earlier point. We are gonna start seeing a lot more cut. We started seeing some today. There were some report. I think gave jackson the right guard for the raiders is not. There's a report that they they're looking to trade their right tackle trent brown. If they can't find a trade partner they'll likely cut him too. So the market's going to be flooded. It's going to be starting to be flooded. It's going to be even more so and on the bengals and they're likely to make some calm cap cuts. They don't need to make them because they have plenty of room. But just the value is not there to keep some of these guys on the books. You know the names. Bobby heart which will save just under five point nine million. Bj phinney will save three and a quarter million with no dead money and then of course geno atkins. We've talked about the gino situation Pretty at length and the question will be whether they released him. Post june one or or designated or releasing prior to june one or designate him or our releasing post you one which adds a little bit more savings to it but if you cut those three guys even if you don't cut gino with a post june one designation that adds about nine million in addition In additional cap space. So if you had that. Nineteen to thirty seven. Obviously naira almost sixty million and fifty six million give or take And that would baltim- in the top five of capital so they have a lot of flexibility to enter the long-term extensions with both their internal free and to go out on the market and signs of sizeable Upgrades hopefully on the offense line and positions that they they really need to

I think it's pretty clear AJ has played his final game is a Bengal probably Close to being clear his day that Gino Atkins has played his final game as a bangle and think about it. Um Zach, Centering. Your three we talk about Coach is coming in and wanting their guys. And we talk about turnover in the changing of the guard. Dunlap is out a J Green will probably be out show of hands. Is everybody okay? With Gino Atkins being out? If if they move on from him, they're going to save about 9.5 million if they cutting this off season. What would you rather roll the dice again with Gino Atkins? At age what 31 is? You know 32 yet coming off the surgery? Is there more It becomes a matter of production. What would you rather have the money? Or the player that the money to you someplace else in another way, or the veteran presence and the experience and the hope you get enough production out of it. No. Dunlap know, AJ Gino's probably gone. Bobby Hart potentially gone. Sean Williams is going to be gone. John Ross is gonna be gone. I could make the case depending on what you did in the draft, although probably much lesser case. CJ use aama. Others cringe when the name Giovanni Bernard is mentioned is moving on from him. This team moved on from Andy Dalton. They moved on from Georgia Loca. They moved on from dark West Denard. There's a lot of turnover here in the changing to get their guys. Geno's got two years left on his deal. Would you rather have the money or two more years of Gino Atkins? I'd rather have the money. I'd rather have the money and look at the prospects of a healthy DJ reader and I think very under how do I want to say this undervalued or under realized Josh to Po, Um, sat out last season, he opted out. I'm not saying he's Gino Atkins. Although Might say, based on Gino's age in the coming season, coming off the surgery. If you were to put the productions of Gino versus Josh to Po together and looked at the price, I think I'd rather have Josh to poet his money. Potential production than Gino Atkins all take the money and hey, to use a Redd's term. I will reallocate the money someplace else on this roster. Because they are moving forward in a window of Joe Burrows contract and moving forward in the window of a rookie quarterback contract is a pivotal point for this franchise. This is no longer about as much as some may want it want it to be. It's no longer about rewarding players for past performances or clinging to the past. This is about Money to use To get They're guys. They're being this coaching staff and plug it in to win. Going forward with Joe Borough. What potentially can they do with Gino Atkins for the next two years? Versus what could they do with that 9.6 million to spend in another way? I will say that surprised this morning and reading another piece on ESPN, where they ask each of the beat writers around the NFL in offseason prediction for all 32 teams. A bold one. This was the bold one from Ben Baby on the Bangles. William Jackson. The third gets a massive contract. And curl. Lawson walks who Ben Wright. Cincinnati has yet to see how the defense looks with Jackson and Trae Waynes as the starting corners. We'll look in a perfect world. I'd love to have William Jackson the third and Trey Wayne's is my corners. But it's not a perfect world. It's a salary cap world. This team had 17 sacks last season. Um Consider what this depth chart looks like if Carl Lawson leaves in free agency. Sam Hubbard on and then You're on the hook to Trae Waynes. You overpaid to get him last year, and that's it about 14 year. Do you realize what the going rate is for corners? I mean, your top corner on Jalen Ramsey is getting 21 year. True, Davis White getting 17.5 million a year. Darius Slaves getting 16.7 million this coming season..

"With safeties were literally 30 yards off the ball. Explain that theory it And how much do you think that that mess Mahomes up? Oh, it first of all traffic in the homes had never seen the type of rush or recently hadn't seen that type of pressure where he had to scramble and by carrying those safety. They stay on the hash marks. So you have 22 safeties on the hash mark, and they just say is deepest possible. Your cornerbacks play what's called the flat area and they're responsible for The run and just things that come out in the flight, but where they were so good is that pass rush? This allowed Kansas City. They have that big strike and when you have those trunk plays Number one is the moralizing and number two. You're having that change of possession change the field. You know, Kansas City could score a lot of points, but it's just what they called it. The Tampa two and this is a basic defense is it's a defense this random, high school college and it's really basic, but the key can you gotta have the personnel to play it. And you gotta have the pass rush that protecting the back in Yeah. Pass Rush was unbelievable. I mean, they run that they run that defense and I look at it there, Linebacker I'm telling Devon White Is a player. I would put him on any one of my football teams I ever coach. He is just a flat out player. I love his game all their linebackers Avery good. And a secondary. You know, Tim, they're not great. I mean, they're they're They're okay. 20 four's a good player. They were talking about how he's got good closing speed. He got picked on a lot this year, but you know, they're not. They're not outstanding in the secondary, but they really don't have to be because of that front seven. Do they? Though they don't and that's the whole key. If you're going to be weak on the back end like Tampa is they don't play man to man. They know they don't blitz a lot, but their front seven is so dominant at the line of scrimmage that you can again protect those players on the back end. You did not see them call for their quarterbacks to play Tyreek Hill or or Travis Kelsey one on one What they did. They play kind of a bad bracket coverage, and they just did not let them get behind them and have that big. Those big plays. Tyree Kill seven catches 73 yards. I think when they met in week, 12 years, something like 208 yards. It was I mean, they really cap down on it. Patrick Holmes is amazing. I that that guy can make plays. I've never seen anyone make falling down, throwing it. A lot of it was just here. Let me throw this thing and see if somebody can catch it. Rather than take a snap a sack. But again, I think we see How important an offensive line is and to draw a parallel here in Cincinnati. If there was ever a compelling reason. Why why to take what this offensive line and the inadequate L offensive line. It's been since the departure of Andrew Whitworth. If we ever needed anything else to tell us what happens when you don't have players to block to allow place to develop If it wasn't Joe Burrow getting hurt. It was last night because they took the most effective quarterback in the NFL and neutered that guy. I think it just highlights here. They better get busy starting today, either with free agency drafting trading, whatever it may be. To rebuild that offensive line, and you saw the opposite with Tampa. Tampa's offensive line was terrific. I think this was yet another indication of what the Bangles absolutely have to do this offseason. There's no question about it. First of all the best office of line. Are the outfits alignment that don't get talked about because they're doing their job. That's number one number two. If you if you go back to yesterday's game, the one thing we were Clamoring that we were hoping and praying and wishing that didn't happen is my home gets hurt, especially at the latter part of the game. It was a saying It was kind of days are good job, bro. Get him out of the game. OK, the game's over with because he is getting absolutely annihilated. So once again, there's one way to neutralize. Great quarterback, and that's having him throwing under pressure and he was under oppressive the entire night, which again like you said it is so important for the Bangles to understand and accept. Their discretion at the offensive line and not to be their focal point of the off season as it pertains to free agency draft and developed and development of that last aspect that we definitely need to happen. You can get him in here. But if you don't develop them to be good players, well, what did that do? You just got names and body so They're going to have to do that. They're gonna have to get these guys all on the same page. But definitely upgrade needs to happen because you can't just start players and Joe Mixon and Joe Burrows and You just There's so much from the from the skills for this is that they have, but you can't utilize them if you don't have those big guys up front. That's exactly right. We're chatting with Tim McGee. The glorious number 85 here is we talk about the Super Bowl yesterday. I think it's stunned. A lot of people. All of the majority the bets online and in Vegas were on Kansas City, but the heavy money was on Tampa so the smart guys must have known something, Tim You sound foolish sometimes when you get on the radio, which, for me is almost all the time And you say things like, Well, the Bangles are only a couple of players or they need to do this. If they do this, all of a sudden, they're a different team. And but it's true. They have their have their franchise quarterback. I mean, you first of all, you have to have that if you don't, then you're just in a wilderness. But I think it just highlights And if you're ju dishes, if you're if you're lucky, first of all with injuries, and you don't have DJ reader get hurt like he did this year. You don't have Gino Atkins play limited playing time like he played this year. If you're if you're judicious with your drafting, and as you say you're developing and you get a little bit of luck with injury, and the bucket here certainly did this year. I think the only major injury that team has they lost tight and O. J. Howard very early in the season, but they're really in the NFL. You're not that far away. If you're strong and key positions, the Bangles have a wealth of things to him. We know they're wide receivers. We know Joe Mixon. We know Joe Burrow. We know on defense. They've got some wonderful players. Jesse Bates is a terrific player reader, I think could have been a a mega star this year if he had stayed healthy. They're not that far away, but they gotta play the game. Smart..

"Zac's answer was and you can understand him taking this approach wanted. Unlike making predictions, he said. We certainly have to get a lot better in a lot of areas in Windsor number one. I'm really excited about this off season in the work we're going to put in to make sure our team improves and put all these pieces together. To have a great year. That's our expectation. We had those expectations this year and we had opportunities, so it's on us to make sure we make the most of those opportunities this year. What has to happen in 2021 to view the season as its success? Well, in no particular order? Well, I'll start with the most important job. Burroughs got to be healthy. And then Joe Burrows. Gotta be kept healthy. He's gonna be kept standing up, clean protected, protect the investment. They're gonna have to figure out a way to pressure the quarterback get pressure on the quarterback in some way, shape or form they're going to have to if I can backtrack one. If they're going to do that, with Joe, That's obviously going to be what everybody is viewing the most important factor in the offseason addressing the offensive line in the draft in free agency, perhaps both they're gonna have to take some swings and they can't be swings and misses and free agency. They have to be swings and they have to be extra base hits in free agency. I'm not so sure it doesn't have to. The first one doesn't have to be a home run in free agency, and they're gonna have to take some swings and deliver extra base hits in the draft again. His team won two games two years ago. Four games this year in answering the question what has to happen in 2021? For exact view? The season is a success. If all of those air done all of those must be done, and then success will be a winning season as the first step beyond that, If it's nine or 10 wins, the rest is out of your control in terms of Whether you're gonna make the playoffs or not, But there's a lot of interesting questions inside of all of that, and I hit on someone with J, including William Jackson, third or Carl Lawson. Everybody wants the Bangles to go big and go bold and free agency and they did a year ago for $150 million in free agency, and the results were mixed bag, but they've got to. They've got to figure out how they're going to approach. William Jackson, the third and Carl Lawson. It is a passing league. If it's a passing league to defend that you're gonna have to get pressure on the quarterback and be able to cover and the less pressure on the quarterback. The longer you have to cover. Good luck. If they can't figure out a way. Keep Carl Lawson, you are down to Sam Hubbard. Yikes on a team that already had trouble getting to the quarterback. Somebody in free agency will use the number five overall pick on a player who had a great college career Regardless of what position that is, though, don't get high marks in the draft from the people who grade such things because they always do. And by about the Saturday morning of the NFL draft, you'll find no shortage of people who are convinced this team's gonna win 11 games Theo excitements going to come. I deal with this every single year. By the time it doesn't matter who the coach is, it doesn't matter who's on the lost her. It doesn't matter who the quarterback is. The one turns midway to the off season and it will this year and that's largely going to be fueled by what we hope our positive updates. Joe Burrow and look, the Bangles have their quarterback. They have the guy now. Can they protect him? Is he gonna come back? Healthy for week? 1 100%. Are there gonna be any lingering issues? I certainly hope not. There's the peace now around the piece. As the Ravens continue to pour it on part of a 160 yard rushing performance, and only 13 carries for former Ohio State running back JK Dobbins. Lamar Jackson had 97 rushing yards before leaving late in the third quarter. He went up and over 1000 rushing yards for the season. 1969 the Bangles second year of existence. They gave up 313 yards on the ground to the Kansas City Chiefs. That was the record for most rushing yards allowed by the Cincinnati Bengals. Well, it's no longer the record and the new record is almost 100 yards. Higher. They gave up more than 400 yards 404 on the ground yesterday. Bangles have not stopped the run well for several years now. They tried to address that through free agency. Last year, they went out and signed DJ Reader. Unfortunately, his season ended after four games. Gino Atkins was never Gino Atkins. We don't know if he'll be back. Next year. They tried to sign some guys on the perimeter. That would be a good run stoppers. Trae Waynes never played Mackenzie Alexander did, but he wasn't in there. Yesterday s O. For starters. They've got to get some of those guys back. But they also could need to continue to add personnel up front. That's going to be a huge priority. It is and there's another guy Grinnell Ren. Would like to have him yesterday. He's a big body guy that plays the run pretty darn well and he and DJ reader same injury, you know, Quadricep tendon that ruptures. I mean, have to those in the same position group in the same season. And I mean, there's there's a black cloud of injury. Just Harvard around this this franchise and You know, you spend a ton of money on Trae Waynes. You don't even know what you got yet. I mean, he hurt himself. That's a that is that a new, unbelievable injury to sustain in a weight room working out in the off season, not just pulling Peck the attaching surgical repair out for the year that stuffs crazy and you wonder when it will go away. Their dream is you're never gonna have everybody leave training camp with But the teams that are usually successful and I can speak to. I know the team that I played on the 81 82 team that had success went to Super 16. When we broke training camp. We thought we were pretty good. FC Cincinnati just put together one of the most unwatchable seasons I think the team could ever have. Um, but it's the first season of a new head coach, and they're moving into the stadium. And if we could have fans this year, Willie There's a lot of people who only Care about that. You see basketball team. I didn't think they would be. I didn't think they would struggle this much now, you know, they played John Brandon talk a lot about the schedule, but they've had player departures. They're not very good defensively, and they've had a really hard time closing out games in the last five or six minutes. And they're really staring at, you know, maybe 2.5 or two and nine, you know, down the barrel because they've got to got to go on the road and play as him. I guess nothing is official. But it seems usually with the first step is to revamp the staff before you fire the head coach on bits. Obviously, it seems as if he's going coming back. But what is the feeling about where this team goes from here? Well, you know, I think the feeling is that this team has a couple spots They really need to upgrade right tackle. Being one of those. Bobby Hart is under performed the offensive line coach Jim Turner. He was the first guy they announced out of here. I would expect them to use that. Probably a top 10 pick. I would assume in the draft next spring on a right tackle and edge rusher re signing Carl Lawson and they're gonna have money Rich AJ Green made $80 million. He's not likely to be back. Gino Atkins contract was around 10 11 million He won't be back and Carlos Dunlap when they traded away another big money guy. They're gonna have the money to adjust some of these things. They're obviously gonna adjust the coaching staff, but it does look like Zach Taylor is coming back. He was told these changes on the staff need to happen or there will be bigger changes so read into that what you want, but it looks like you have in the coaching staff will look a whole lot different next year. "They would just stand to reason that fatigue has to be a problem. Well, how is how is Tomlin handling that then because they still have three games to go this in this regular season before the playoffs? How is he handling the fatigue issue? Yeah, You know, he's always been a guy who especially once the regular season starts, he still has. Well, maybe not this year, but usually a training camp. It's more physical, maybe a little more taxing than a lot of teams to do, but Once the regular season starts regularly gives off Ben Rogers Burger marquees policy, David A lot of his, You know, more better guys have been the league, you know, 89 10 more years. Is that one day off a week for practice and generally doesn't do the pad to too much during the regular season. Now they have these three weeks in a row that we're just totally odd week the way they were. You know, they're supposed to be a screw with your Thursday and we all know everybody knows the Baltimore game that pushed back the next Wednesday. Then you had a quick turnaround to the next Monday against Washington. And then they had a quick turn around for the next week to a Sunday then S o. That kind of they kind of pulled the reins back with short practice is there in that time now they get this bonus day this week since they too, of course, that from Sunday to Monday, which is kind of a reprieve, so they were proud planning a practicing in pads here. This week leading up to the game, So I think it's sort of a chance to kind of reset and get back and one before, you know, pretty much normal routine. Finally, for the first time they've had in about a month here and maybe kind of like Depressed. You know the stole evidence to and there's you know, the bad 11 to win your love in, you know to be 11, too, but the one negativity, but it's kind of reset things.
