"A look at the best director nominees, not a single woman. And even look beyond that, Daniel Kwan, one half of the Daniels, the only nominee of color as far as I know. And so that's disappointing, especially when the thing you have to do also when this conversation comes up is, say, okay, well, who would you have put in those spots? And we won't get into all that now. Again, for another show. But if you looked over at top ten lists from various critics, from 2022, there are just a ton of diverse options that were out there in the best of cinema last year. So I think that is also why it stands out as a particular failure for these nominations. Yeah, and maybe I'll jump in there, Josh, since you transitioned nicely. That is my next takeaway, the struggle for diversity and representation continues. And I acknowledge that as a struggle because it's something the academy seems to be failing at, but also because of what you mentioned, that we can recognize it as something we all want and is certainly a good thing, but then when you actually get into those picks, which are the ones that you want in and which are the ones that you want out, Robert Daniels, the great Chicago critic here said another year Halle Berry is still the only black woman who's won best actress, Selma is still the only film directed by a black woman to be nominated for best picture. A black director has never won best director and a black woman has never been nominated for best director and then he also tweeted about seeing that Gina prince bythewood didn't get nominated for best director for the woman king and sando mar and Alice diop missed out as well for best international feature. I wish I was higher on Gina prince bythewood's the woman king. It wouldn't have been in contention for me. I wish I was a lot higher on Sarah Paulie's women talking. You know that's a huge disappointment for me considering how much I respect Sarah Paulie's work. Those wouldn't really have been in the mix for me. And I wouldn't have nominated Viola Davis either. Josh, for me, the most likely candidates, especially from the woman king, would have been too soon in bed. Either a supporting actress. I understand why she's supporting to Viola Davis. But I think she is the protagonist. I think she's the main character of the woman king. I think lashana lynch would have been a great candidate for best supporting actress as well from the woman king. I will acknowledge that Sam mentioned this to me our producer via slack that it does seem that Michelle Yeoh is the first Asian woman to be nominated for best actress. So that is one of those things that we can recognize as a positive even though it may be insane that it's taken this long. I want to jump back to Sarah pauli. And I'm with you as much as we both liked her previous films. Quite a bit. We were big fans. I think we were both left a little let down by women talking. But here's the point in the context of this conversation, even if we both might not have argued for it, when you see women talking, get and I believe a best adapted screenplay, best adapted and the best picture, how that same body, and I know the voting is different. When it comes to best picture, it's open to the entire academy to vote, whereas, I believe, best director is only voted on by director members of the academy. So I know that sometimes skews things. But even so, when the movie is being recognized that way, it is especially glaring that there is a woman director there whose film is being represented and yet her work is not. So that's a little frustrating as well. A little strange no matter how you feel about women talking itself. Yeah, one of the things we try to do here whenever we talk about the Oscars is recognize that there are always films or performances or production elements that we wish had gotten more recognition, but that we're never really realistic. So how much can we bemoan them? Right. I don't know that we really thought after sun and Charlotte wells would get much attention from the Oscars. But our joint film of the year. And of course, if it was me who could just magically snap my fingers and make certain nominations a reality, clearly I would have had Charlotte wells in there for best director. I'm going to go to another takeaway for me that's maybe the positive spin on that because obviously I agree with you about Charlotte wells and after sun. But hey, after sun is being represented, this is the silver lining thing, right? I went into this thinking maybe I know there had been some talk about Paul mescal for best actor. Maybe that would happen, but I'm not, I'm not counting on it. After sun is huge. I mean, it's the bright spot of the film spying world in 2022, but I recognize that's not the case in other circles, even though many other critics liked it a lot. So it was just hoping for that so glad to see that Paul mescal did get the nomination now. Is he likely to win? Well, he's up against Colin Farrell for bay and she's been sharing Austin butler for Elvis. Brendan Fraser for the whale and Bill Nye for living. So I would say at this point, not likely unless there's a huge campaign that begins, but I do love that he's being honored, as you said, our shared number one film. Winner of our golden brick award. The movie is going to get a lot more attention now. And that's what I want out of the Oscars is every year there are a couple of films, a couple of performers whose stature is elevated by the exposure, the nominations provide and I'm thrilled that that's happening in

"Lies lies lies. Prepped and strangling in a jungle of lies and deceit. You. You two are the first making me believe you wouldn't betray him. No. No, I've gone mad. That is a great monologue, but I also like the physicality that Davis brings to this performance. She's always fidgeting with her fingers or Tapping nervously a surface, and that is the wonderful effect of making these elaborate isabeau and colors that she wears, tremble at times. Sometimes with passion, sometimes with rage. I thought of that whatever that frilled dinosaur is in in Jurassic Park. You know where it just kind of bursts out around its head. A lot of times that's what these colors look like on Davis. This was an interesting choice for Davis to play an older Elizabeth to Flynn's assets, even though they were almost the exact same age in real life. And she also does it under frightful white makeup, this garish red wig. In some scenes, her eyebrows don't even seem to be there in others. They're kind of wildly painted on, but her instincts were right to do this, especially even against the dashing Flynn. It's a hugely entertaining performance. It really is. And it's my number three. I love it when homework pays off, I feel Bette Davis as Queen Elizabeth I absolutely belongs at this spot on the list. You said it Curtis 1939. The year after jezebel, which was my favorite film, if I recall correctly from our Bette Davis marathon, the same year as dark victory, which we also talked about. It's the same year she won the Oscar for jezebel. As Queen Elizabeth is deeply immersed in this love hate relationship with Robert devereux, the Earl of Essex, who is played by Flynn and I actually haven't seen a ton of aerial Flynn performances and watching him here. Just reminded me, Josh, that he must have been the prettiest man on the planet at the time. In fact, he must have been the prettiest person on the planet. It's not, it's not fair to Davis or any leading lady to have to compete with that. Maybe that's why she went the makeup route that she did. She figured I might as well go way the other direction. But competing with each other is what the characters are doing throughout this film and the movie would have us believe that they are both in love with each other. I'm not sure it completely pulls off. The notion that they both are that deeply in love with each other. But she recognizes his ambition and doesn't fully trust him and she's right to because he is ambitious and he's seeking a certain title that carries a lot more weight than the Earl of Essex. You mentioned it a great deal is made of Elizabeth seniority. I look this up. It's 1596 in the world of the film. Queen Elizabeth I was born in 1533. I don't think they ever allude directly to what her age is, but if you do that math, Bette Davis is playing a 63 year old. Robert devereaux is born in 1565, so he's only 30 or 31. Right. And that's exactly how old you said it, both Davis and Flynn were at the time this is made, but yeah, she's caked in the makeup to make her look older and she's got a rival in the younger girl from her court who's played by De Havilland who pines for devereaux. You mentioned unapologetic, that's great word as hard as Davis can be in lots of roles. And we see it here as rough and raw as she can be. The menace she brings sometimes to a performance is something we talked about a lot. That's on display here too at times, but what really does stand out in her portrayal of this royal, you were getting at it with the ticks she has and the little nervous habits that she has, it really humanizes her. And in contrast to some other queens who may be talked about on our list, she is fragile. Davis doesn't have a problem expressing that side of her. She leans into the fragility. She leans into the volatility of having to maintain her status and fulfilling her duty while also being a woman. Look. He can't answer. He did, I'm sorry. If your majesty will let me tell you. Go on, then tell me. Unfortunately, because you yourself who call the fleet back from Cadiz before my plans have been carried out. Unfortunately, the Spanish treasure fleet with 12 million ducats lies beneath the waters of Cadiz harbor. Sunk by the Spaniards themselves. While Essex, against the advice of Howard and Raleigh, gathered fame for himself by storming the town. There was no doubt to be done in honor madam. It was for the glory of England. For the glory of Essex. I had so much fun with this movie that after I saw it, I told my wife about the film. She had no idea as I did before I watched it about this relationship between the Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I and I walked her through the whole thing. She did say, it sounds like it was made by a man. And I think she is on to something to the extent that spoilers, the arrow Flynn character comes out as much as any character in this film can come out on top. He comes out on top. He gets to be the tragic hero. And I think Bette Davis character just gets to be the tragic character in the film. But that doesn't diminish at all, Davis performance. Yeah, I'm thinking about the final image, which is pretty haunting and does speak to that. And yeah, he does play that part. And there was some background I was reading up on about this negotiations over the title. Flynn apparently wanting his characters name in the title. There's even an alternate title for this film that art imitating life. Yeah. Yes, that does not have his name. So there was probably a little bit that behind the scenes and going on on screen as well. "Not prepared for. It doesn't seem right to start a show devoted to movie queens with the voice of a king. But so it goes. John boyega there as king gezo in the trailer for the woman king, which has Viola Davis leading a battalion of woman warriors in 19th century West Africa. We'll have some thoughts on the Gina prince bythewood historical epic, plus yes, our top 5 movie queens. That and more, I had on film spotting. Welcome to film spotting. Josh, I'm of course interested to hear what you thought of the woman king, but I'm even more interested to hear about your four DX screening of a woman king. I am so out of touch. I didn't know this was a thing. I have yet to have the four DX experience. Do I have to wait for you to tell me that? Or can you give me some nuggets now? I can fill you in and warn you far, far away. I had no idea what this was either at. It was the only screening that worked in my schedule. And this should tell you what you're in for. I went up to the counter to get the ticket, said here for the woman king, three O 5, and he looks at me and says, you know it's 40 X, right? Same thing you didn't know, what is that? And he begins. What does that mean? To describe it. And I immediately figured likely I'm going to be the only one in the theater. You know, afternoon and a weekday. I said, you know what? If no one else is in there, is there any way you can turn it off? No, go. He couldn't do it. So yes, maybe you did this at Disney. I think the Muppets show at Disney might have had some version of this, not as bad as what I experienced. Basically, your seats, tilt, move, shake, at times, punch you in the back. There was a water button that I had a choice of pushing on or off. I did leave it on for about two minutes until during an early fight scene, I was literally spritzed after like a throat was cut, which what was supposed to be blood, but I'm sure it was like tepid water that had been sitting in the arm of the chair for three weeks, disgusting fans are blowing on you, lights are strobe lights are flashing at you, it was miserable. Adam, I at a certain point, I had to, whenever it would really start going during the fight scenes, stand up, and just stand in the theater. Like with my arms folded. Waiting for the seats to stop. So I could sit down again. I am sorry to anyone involved in inventing this technology. I'm sure a lot of work put into it. I'm sure some listeners enjoy it in some way. But it was pure hell. It is a miracle, not old man Larson. It is a miracle that I enjoyed the woman king as much as I did. It might be as 8 out of 5 star movie Adam, but the 40 X reduced it. To the rating that I'm going to go with. Give us two years. We'll be doing our top 5 four DX movie experiences. Lord almighty. Later in the show, we'll share some non 40 X thoughts on the number one film at the box office last weekend. It was Gina prince by the Woods of the woman, king, I also had a chance to catch up with Brett Morgan's David Bowie fantasia moon age daydream. We'll talk about all that. And more. But first, movie, queens. Last week when we tease this top 5, we were wondering just how rich of a topic this actually was. We did end up, I believe, with two picks in common, and that's because they're both really good picks from really good movies. But otherwise, Josh, we have stand-alone, unique lists. Yeah, and I would say, I know one of the crossover picks is something we both watched for homework. So that's always a good thing when these lists give us a chance to catch up with something for the first time. And we both like the film a lot, and it sounds like the central performance as well. Oftentimes, with film spotting top 5 lists, we have to go through a whole explanation of what our criteria was, this one seems like maybe your favorite movie animals pretty straightforward, Josh. Well, I mean, animals I would argue are quite a complicated concept. But yeah, we didn't want to overthink this one, right? I know some creative suggestions came in on social media. I love hearing those. I'll name a few in my honorable mentions, but here it was really a matter of going through the most notable portrayals of queens on screen, picking my favorites and then trying to justify those picks. Think a little more deeply about them. Why is this a favorite of mine? What's interesting to say about it? So maybe there's themes that will arise as we go through our picks. I think most of mine probably reckon in some way with the personal and the political, how or if a woman can pursue her dreams, her desires while being a queen true to her royal duties. That was not the case, though, with my first pick Adam, we can dive right in here. If you want this pick, it's purely for the fun and the design of the performance. At number 5, I'm going with the evil queen, voiced by Lucille Laverne in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937. Somehow I couldn't find a place for the evil queen on my top 5 Disney villains list. I did that. Back in 2014 with Tasha Robinson. So I'm trying to make up for that oversight here. Lucille Laverne is the voice of the evil queen in Disney's first animated feature. It was her final film role after a stage and screen career that went back to the 19 teens. In her vocal performance here, what I really liked about it is she never loses her reality, even as the queen descends further and further into mad jealousy of Snow White.

"It's today explained, I'm Noel king. The director Gina prince bythewood has proven herself in Hollywood. Love and basketball beyond the lights, The Old Guard, but when she pitched the woman king, it was almost like Hollywood executives forgot her distinguished resume. She wanted to make an action movie starring black women set two centuries ago where men are barely on screen and Hollywood was like, you know, Hollywood is a fascinating place in that people speak on wanting original stories, yet they continually fall back on what's familiar because what's familiar is safe. There's a proven track record to that. So when you come out with original content, which me as an audience, that's what I get excited about. It's a harder sell. It certainly a harder sell when it's a movie historical epic, which is absolutely a genre that's been dominated by male stories and male heroes and male protagonists and villains. And certainly we've never seen this with black women before. And so what was your attitude going into the room with people who you knew might be skeptics? I would like to say my enthusiasm and passion for this when I read the script, I saw the movie. And I feel like I'm my first audience in the movie in my head was exactly the type of movie I would die to see. And so it was bringing that passion into the room, but not only the passion, but the swagger of everything I'm telling you, I want this film to be I can do because my body of work has shown you that I can do that. You really want to do this kid. And certainly having The Old Guard on my resume at that point was absolutely helpful in their beliefs that, yes, she could do the action and do these big set pieces well.

"This is on you. Stand up to the big bad bullies out there. And work them into the ground. Here are some of the best hockey players in the state, which puts you as some of the best hockey players in the country. That's from the trailer for the new documentary hockey land, which is currently playing in limited release. Set in Minnesota's north country, the unofficial capital of U.S. hockey. It documents a year in the life of players coaches and families on two rival high school hockey teams. Adam, you caught up with this one, you know, a little bit about hockey. What did you think? Yeah, full disclosure, first of all, the producer of the film, one of the producers Andrew sherburne is someone who I've gotten to know over the years. He's the executive director of the great film scene cinemas in Iowa City. And he was on the show once. I think back in 2017, he co produced and co directed a movie called saving Britain that we talked about. And as I said, he's back here as a producer. The co director on that film, Tommy Haynes, is the director of hockey land he comes originally from this Minnesota iron range area and grew up immersed in the hockey culture there. I'm happy for Andrew that the movie last weekend at the box office I think on 75 screens was the number one documentary in terms of gross and I can understand why people are responding to it. Audiences and critics so far the overall feedback has been very positive and I'll tell you as you're watching this film that really is about these two teams and the players on these teams, a little bit of a David versus Goliath scenario and you feel as if you know where the documentary might be heading in terms of them facing off against each other. Is a moment late in this film, Josh of pure elation that had me pounding my fist in the air and saying yes out loud like I was watching the Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup and there's a moment in this film of utter agony that had me groaning in about to throw my remote control at the TV as if the Blackhawks had just lost in game 7. And it's not because I have any investment whatsoever in Minnesota, state high school hockey or these teams, but because the movie does make me care about and make me invested in the people. The kids who were on these teams, the kids in particular that the movie is following. There's a group of four or 5. The coaches, the parents, you see what this means to them. And not only the fleetingness of this time, that may be for some of these kids the best time of their lives. They may never have anything better than this moment being part of this team and hopefully bringing glory to their school and their family and their town. But it's also fleeting that the movie touches on how one of these schools eveleth is evolving itself. And it's going to be merging with a larger school in the near future and this great tradition is going to be something that is a thing of the past. So there's trying to kind of hang on to that and also make one last push. And Tommy Haynes, the director here and his crew, they understand how evocative this setting is, Minnesota, these prairies, these frozen ponds, these small towns. And not just the way they can look when you shoot them the right way, but the sounds too. Hockey's a very oral sport from the taping of the sticks to the slap of the puck. The hitting of the boards, the skates, of course, along the ice, you name it. You know exactly what hockey is, you can conjure the game in your head just from the sounds of it. And you take that and you mix it with the sounds of the snow tires along those small town streets and the scraping of the windshield, the movie knows that it's about a lot more than hockey itself. And I would say that if you're someone who doesn't care about the sport at all, even better because really fundamentally this movie is about the people and you're going to be exposed to a culture and a way of life that is something that is unfamiliar to you. And so like with any really good documentary, you're going to learn something new. Yeah, emphasizing the sound makes a ton of sense. I am not a hockey aficionado. The only Blackhawks game I've been to is with you. You took me a couple years ago. We had great seats, and as you're describing that, I can hear every just about every one of those things. So that makes sense, and I could see how that could be effective in the documentary. Hockey land is expanding to a 140 plus screens around the country this weekend, so more people listening will have a chance to see it. I believe it's going to be available on demand in October. Next week, on film spotting, a movie, I'm actually going to be seeing at film scene in Iowa City. It's Gina prince bythewood's the woman king, starring Viola Davis, that hits theaters this weekend, and I know there's been a little bit of discussion about it in our slack. I'm a little behind Josh, so maybe you can fill me in on where we stand with our producer, Sam. We were looking at doing a top 5 focused on movie queens, not only, of course. Inspired by Viola Davis in the woman king, but the passing of Queen Elizabeth II is that still where we're at. I think that's where we're at. The question is, how rich of a subject is this? And whether or not we have too many picks in common, and we might do a joint list. I don't know, every once in a while, we do joint lists for various reasons that might be the case here. I have a preliminary list that I'm quite happy with. There's some great choices, but if you have a similar one, maybe we'll have to team up on this. We'll have to discuss that, but yeah, I am excited about getting to do this topic. We also wanted to take a moment here to recognize the passing of a legend. Jean-Luc Godard, the French filmmaker, new wave pioneer, died earlier this week, 91 years old, director of dozens of features and countless more short films. You can absolutely say he's among the most influential artists of the 20th century and just look at the features he made, the volume and the quality of films he made, even just between 1960 and 67 we're talking about films like breathless and divisive and contempt and band of outsiders Piero lefou alphaville masculine feminine weekends, another one I remember studying and having to write a paper about in film school. As a film student, whether you're studying to make films or you're studying to write about and examine and talk about films, you are going to reckon with godard, you're going to reckon with him early. As I said on Twitter, I really figured out what the quote unquote rules of cinema were by watching godar break them. Sure. You know, you hear about it. You know what classical Hollywood is doing, or you're starting to understand the vocabulary of it, but it really doesn't fully crystallize until you see someone say, okay, I'm going to now subvert all of that. I'm going to throw it all on its head. That's when it really clicks. You even think of something like breathless, which is one of the first ones of his I saw. And that really is a deconstruction of the romantic comedy romantic drama, and then a reassembling of it. It's like breaking those pieces. This is how I think of a lot of the French new wave, really, not just good art, but taking what was had become traditional cinema up to that point about the mid century, taking it all apart with reverence and appreciation. You know, not smashing it, but disassembling it with reverence and then seen, but what would it look like this way? What if we edited like in breathless with these jump cuts and instead of cutting from one person's face to the other person in the scene, what if we just stayed on that face from a slightly imperceptibly different angle?

In terms of those two films duking it out, Cruz took at Top Gun: Maverick 48% of the vote 38% of the vote went to nope. Jeanine batiste says Top Gun lived up to the hype pleasantly surprised. Here's Judah egga, sorry Judah. I got that wrong. Bullet train was dumb fun, Top Gun: Maverick was militarily industrialized fun, and bodies, bodies, bodies, was the funniest. However, nope is easily the movie that defined the summer for me. Watching the spectacular action set pieces live up to the highest levels of hype. I had for it going in, I couldn't help but feel that I was watching Jordan Peele graduate in front of my eyes. From innovative horror auteur into something only Spielberg, Cameron, and Nolan have been in recent years. The original idea blockbuster director who commands an audience with his name alone. Here's Sam R who says best movie of the summer 2022 goes to the surprisingly fresh entry into a nostalgic hyper masculine 80s action franchise. No, not the cringey jingoism of Top Gun: Maverick, but the stylish and clever and gorgeously shot, pray. Oh, you got a good point there, Sam. Sam's on to something. I think for me, and I know nobody expected this, surely I didn't expect it. It would be between prey and nope ahead of Top Gun: Maverick. Okay, I love it. Here's toss if Khan, I voted for nope, but I should have voted for other Neptune frost, which yeah, this one's come up. I love to hear that is one that I've given the golden brick recommendation to. So thank you so much. Toss up. Here's Kyle closing us out. Ignoring the small technicality that it was released in late March is everything I want from a summer spectacle. Sweeping story, new love, good versus evil, dazzling special effects. It also has a wild animal battle, a jungle battle with a bow and arrow where a man literally throws a motorcycle at the bad guy and a meet cute with a coordinated rope jump off a bridge into a train fire. And I haven't even mentioned the dance off. What 2022 summer movie has come close to topping even one of these scenes, and our producer Sam jumps in to let us know that it came to Netflix in late May, so that's when many in the U.S. saw it, and so Kyle are probably should count as a summer movie. And it's one I still desperately need to see. Yeah, it's on my catch up list for the end of the year, absolutely. And I do remember that being all the chatter was in late May. So absolutely accounts, Kyle. Our new poll question has us turning our backs on summer entirely. We're looking ahead to the fall this week, of course, what is your most anticipated movie of the fall movie season, as with our preview this week, we're considering movies here released between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. There are a ton of films making their debuts at some of the fall's major film fests, Toronto, Venice, New York, Chicago, but unless they have actual announced U.S. theatrical dates attached to them. We're not counting them, and neither should you, so keep those out of your pull comments, keep those out of your other vote, Josh, give them the options. Black Panther, Wakanda, forever, Ryan coogler returning to the series there as director, Andrew Dominick's Marilyn Monroe tale blond already, one of Adam's questions, don't worry darling. Olivia Wilde's follow-up to book smart. This one stars Florence Pugh Harry Styles and Chris Pine. Steven Spielberg's autobiographical the fable man's written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner and yes, we will also offer the option of other of the four titles that we see there, Josh, for me the answer is pretty simple. Pretty boring, going with chalk. I'm going with Spielberg and Kushner. Those four are the one I would see if I could only see one of them. It would be the fable ones. Yeah, it's a clear answer for me. And unfortunately, not very interesting, but I'm with you, the fable. You can vote now at film spotting .NET. If you leave a comment and we hope you do, please let us know where you're listening from, a quick note, an addendum here to the poll in the Twitter version of it that Sam posted. He didn't include Black Panther. And Spielberg's the fable minutes took it with 34% of the vote blond and don't worry darling essentially tied for a second. Other was just behind. Some of the movies that came up under the heading of other were Gina prince bythewood's the woman king, with Viola Davis, Martin mcdonagh's the banshees of insurance, Brett Morgan's David Bowie Doc, moon age daydream, and a movie that might just come up here in a moment as we get

"Asteroid city from Wes Anderson you not have Wes high. And then, man, number 5, it's just a coin toss between nope or the latest from Ryan Johnson knives out to. And I'm leaving out the Oppenheimer the end, which just still blows my mind to even think about. Yeah, I think on the outside of my top 5 looking in is definitely knives out to also we get a new yorgos poor things, just thinking of some that haven't been mentioned on the show already. And then two that you have mentioned and Killers of the Flower Moon, hugely anticipated by me and the eternal daughter. You briefly mentioned Joanna hogg, ghost story? Yes. Please, thank you. Sign you up. Yep. Those are our top 5 questions and most anticipated titles of the 2022 movie year. I said there were some honorable mentions. Do you have any questions that weren't quite top 5 worthy, Josh? Oh, yeah, I got a couple here. Will my growing appreciation for Josephine decker's work grow into all out love? So I was kind of cool and disappointed in myself at being cool on Madeline's Madeline, like Shirley, the next film she made after that, a little bit better, but I'm hoping that her next one, the sky is everywhere, will really wow me in a way that so many other people have been by her work because I want to get on board. I've been so intrigued by a lot of what she's done and just haven't quite fallen in love with the films yet. So maybe the sky is everywhere. We'll do that. And another question here will the woman king be my excuse to finally catch up with love and basketball. I mean, pretty much in line with my Barbara stanwick shame is the shame that I've never seen Gina prince bythewood's love in basketball. So many people. I love that movie. And the topic is right up my alley. So I'm hoping that the woman king, which is prince python's new film, will be my excuse to catch up with it. This one, it looks like it's a historical epic set in 18th century Africa and here's the real hook stars Viola Davis. Yeah. The shame for me is not only that I have not seen love in basketball, but other than her recent film The Old Guard. I haven't seen any of prince bythewood's film. So that does make me feel a lot of regret Josh and I look forward to remedying that this year. Might not so good question. I couldn't come up with a clever one about nope was a play on a question I asked last year looking ahead to Judas and the Black Messiah. I wondered about Daniel Kaluuya and whether or not that film would anoint him as one of this generation's best actors will nope anoint Jordan Peele as one of his generation's best. He arguably is already there through two films. Does Paul Dano, an actor, I have come to really like, but early on in his career, especially in a role like the one he plays opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in there will be blood felt that he just quite couldn't bring the same wattage. Does he have the charisma to pull off the riddler in The Batman? I mentioned David Hudson and his movie preview earlier for criterion dot com. This is a hat tip to him. This is literally a question he asks in the piece by way of setting up what the film is. What a great question, Josh, I almost just stole it and made it one of my own. What would happen in taxi driver if sybil shepherd and Jodie Foster went out to get coffee? How good is that question? Master Gardner is the film that will give us the answer in David's mind. That's the latest from Paul Schrader. Finally, we'll see if it comes out in 2022 or not, but despite another ridiculous title, will Alejandro G in yari to get back in my good graces with bardo parentheses or false chronicle of a handful of truths? No. No, the answer is no. No. I think I would title like that that he's going to. I think you're better off going to see Avatar 2. Yeah, I might be actually. And finally, don't have a question here. This is why it's an honorable mention. I just had the three titles and I knew I needed to come up with something good. I guess my question is something along the lines of turning red, light year, the deer king, which is still deer king that is directed by former Ghibli animators musashi ondo and matsuyuki Miyagi, which one of those films will be the one that really makes sure that animation is not forgotten by us when we're doing our end of year top ten lists and favorite scenes of the year. Yeah. I mean, you know my love for Pixar is strong, but from what I've seen, even just the imagery alone, dear king is the safe bet. Okay. Again, those are our top 5 questions about the movie year. We would love to hear your questions or any other comments about.

"NBA Champ former number one pick in the NBA Father Klay Thompson, the three time NBA champ. Some strong words about DeAndre Ayton, his countrymen from the Bahamas. Two of those guys have have a close connection and a bond It's great to hear Michael trying to push the young star to be truly great Ben Lyons filling in for Rich Eisen on a Monday, the day after the Milwaukee Bucks get their first win in the NBA Finals, and we find the series. At two games to one. And Michael's right. DeAndre Ayton needs to play 40 plus minutes can't get in foul trouble, and he played 24 last night. And if you watch the game when he checked out When Yanis really started to go to work and Before you knew it was a 20 point loss for the Phoenix Suns. So Michael Thompson, who I affectionately refer to as the real life, Dosek is man because he is the most interesting man in the world Art Our radio board up here at the Rich Eisen Studios thought he was the governor of the Bahamas, the mayor of Nassau, the president of the country, But he just has a love for the Bahamas having grown up there. Um, says he didn't know it was cold. When he went to Minnesota. I thought that you know he might just need a jacket and found that it was a little chillier than that Come wintertime playing alongside Kevin McHale. But Michael was some strong words about DeAndre Ayton and, Yeah, you know, with the NBA Finals going on and space jam coming out on Friday. The new space jam with LeBron James and Don Cheadle, directed by Malcolm Lee comes out Friday. Thought you know, this week might be get opportunity to count down some of my favorite basketball movies of all time And at number five is love and basketball. A beautiful film There is with Omar EPPS and Sanaa Lathan. They both play at USC. It's this relationship that these two players have. His father is a former player, played by Dennis Haysbert. And she's a big time star at USC. He's struggling as a player himself, and it's a beautiful film, and I just remember loving it as a kid growing up in high school. I was playing high school basketball when it came out. Shouts out to Lauren Alexander L boogie played over at Dalton and we used to watch the gate Watch, watch basketball together ice ankles and watch the movie and we loved love and basketball. And the film still holds up. You know, 20 something. Years later, I think we have a quick little sound bite here of Sanaa Lathan talking about how she had to get in character and what she needed to do to be able to be believable as a basketball player in that film. Basketball is really such a. It's a skill. It's like learning to be a ballet dancer. I mean, it's not something that you can just pick up and I quickly realized that that you know, bouncing the ball and not looking and running and then being able to bounce in your left hand and then throw, you know. Making the basket. I mean, it's a whole another world and to get you know my body to do that took lots of just drilling over and over and over again. How did you approach it to begin with? I just got out there with the bones started bouncing it. That's amazing. So not Lathan from love and basketball, and you know when people talk about that film, they don't say, Well, the basketball scenes don't look real. They don't pick it apart like that, like they do other sports movies. And that's a credit not only to sin in Omar, but to Gina Prince Bythewood, who directed the film, and it's number five on my list of favorite basketball movies going to count those down. Throughout the week. As we lead up to Friday with space, Jim finally hitting theaters put on ice, Obviously because of the pandemic, But now LeBron and the goon Squad the tune squad, they're gonna tip off and play, uh, play a little game of space basketball this weekend. So looking forward to that, all right, want to switch gears here and let's do a little Aaron Rodgers check in because I was fortunate enough to be asked to host this. Show back in February, about a week after the Super Bowl, and the conversation, then had already started around errands unhappiness in Green Bay, coming off the M V p season where they lose the NFC championship game at home. Anytime you lose a home playoff game. It's devastating for an organization and a fan base. But Erin at and year, you know 16 or whatever it is at 36 years old. You're 14, you know, put up arguably his best season won the M V P Won 13 games. They scored the most points in the NFL last year. And his relationship with Davante Adams for the best relationships we've seen with Aaron and any of his receivers over his career, the things they were able to do last year and And now, here we are, uh, two weeks away from camp opening up. And lots of speculation still about errands, commitment to Green Bay, as well as green based commitment to Aaron. Whether it's financial or whether it's with roster moves. Um, you have to question the Green Bay Packers and how committed they are for The back nine of Aaron Rodgers career so interesting to me in sports when players north of 35 find themselves Amongst the best players in their sport. And you're you're saying Well is Roger Federer going to retire? Well, he just made the quarter finals at Wimbledon. So is Chris Paul gonna hang them up? We just came in second in the M V p voting. He's in the NBA Finals for the first time, and if he wins the NBA Finals this year, you're gonna be retiring. He's 36. He's gonna be looking for a three or four year deal. And something tells me my New York Knicks might give it to him, which would, by the way would be the most. Nick's thing ever is to give a 37 year old Chris Paul $100 million for three years. Um But Aaron Rodgers just won the MVP. He's not going to walk away from football. Not when he sees Tom Brady. We just beating the match out in Montana, not when he sees him winning Super Bowls north of 40. The new thing for the A list. Guys is going to be playing quarterback at 40 years old. So Aaron Rodgers isn't gonna sit out for a year. He's not gonna sit out from camp. I don't think Um, you know, as a story that came out a couple weeks ago that Aaron joined the country club in Green Bay or close by to where the Packers have there. Summer camp and preseason workouts. So if you join a country club in July in Green Bay, Wisconsin. When do you play that golf course. You play that golf course. July August September, maybe get some nice days in October before the snow comes in November. Now we don't really know the backstory behind it. Could it be a local businessman or the club itself gave him a membership and he said, Sure, why not? Or if you chose that to do that, I don't think it was the troll Packers fans or Troll the organization. Oh, wow, He's he's joining the country club. That means he's going to be here in July and August five letters here. Just for everybody out there and Packer land and yourself today. R E L A Ex That was from a few years ago..

"We'll have to have that conversation but yeah it's really tough because we need more people empowered to understand that. Don't just make movies that i mean. Of course she wanted to make things that you're attracted to but there's there's a huge audience out there so many different things you just have to be more open minded but also honestly we just need more people different people in those positions of power making decisions so then you have secret life of bees beyond the lights just movie i love and then most recently old guard which is a big action movie for net flicks over that period where there people on those films or executives that championed you or people you learn from during that period not really say it was really more mike my core i mean my husband and i we are our own little pod but we create and really push each other work on each has things in make sure that they have to pass either before they get in the world because the world we will be tougher on each other than the world will be you have one shot at the first impression in this industry so before you go out with the script. It's gotta be great so you know we just beat up on each other but i will say there's been a couple of people that have been helpful. Certainly when i made this mistake step to the old guard. It wasn't a leap. Because i had developed silver black which was marvel sony from for two years which didn't end up going but led to the old guard to all the things i learned in developing that i was able to take to the old guard so it wasn't this week. There was a step. So but ryan johnson cousin. Incredible filmmaker did last giant them. Looper he knives out. Of course he's been so great he he saw beyond the lights and just became a champion of me and he was a great resource to call during this patty jenkins course. Did wonder woman was a great source because doing big action joints is different. There you have to start with the basics which is telling a good story and creating compelling characters but just the making of it is different to have two people who've done it before in denver. Really well to be able to lean on them in getting siton wet. Is it going to be like. And what are some things to try to avoid but super helpful and where was that filmed. It was filmed in london in morocco. Wow and you said it took two years in two years from when i got the gig to when i finished it was i was overseas nine and a half months so i came back every month for two five and seven days in them but once i started shooting been. The boys Me over there but it was time because it's during school and but they were able to come for short periods in that was great and they had find beyond on that set which was cool but it was sixty three day shoot. It's a long long time. That was double whatever done in. That was one of the things they talked about is the stamina that it takes to do that to be under that level of pressure for that amount of time on you in you have to be so singular focus. You can't get hurt. you can't get sick you can't have a bad day. He wired the captain. It's a lot but again that's sports mentality of stamina outworking everybody certainly something that could lean on. And what your technique in working with the lead to these movies..

"It's all schools that are real Ucla ucla never even let me one thing that sex and so your career as a film director begins from there and that film was well received well reviewed. Were you able to get kind of regular gigs from there over. It still struggle to get the next one mean laughing. Yeah because you know you look at the time between them basketball and secret life abuse. Well what happened is actually i did do i did do disappearing acts right after and i got disappearing acts because of lebanon basketball disappearing. Axios my favorite book by terry mcmillan. Pride eleven basketball. I had heard they were gonna make tried to get a meeting. I couldn't even get the door not them. Since i love basketball. I got in the door guy and then got the so. I shot that with sonata. Also which is great to work with her again. Same lead love basketball. So i shot that right after. And then i needed a break but then i started developing another projects. And that's when kind of reality can hit me in the face a bit in that once you do back to back films. You feel like yeah. I'm gonna just whatever i wanna do. I'm gonna do in that. That doesn't happen. So i mean i developed a project for two years. That didn't end up going in. It's weird to be on time for that long. that have nothing to show for. It happened twice before the secret life lease while longtime any look at so many women certainly in this industry. How many don't get that second film. That's a real real problem in our industry and in something that people been focused on the last couple of years of had we fix that because yeah that's second film is i mean it's tough to get any. Yeah but that's interesting. You would think getting that first foot in the door making that first one will be the tough part. But you're saying that it's also difficult to so different people sort of trust you for the second time and why is that. Do you think could not it makes no sense because it doesn't happen on the flip side does not happen with men. I mean we'll part of it is what do we gravitate towards making films female leads. It's tougher to get made because the people making the decisions are not women. They are men until they're green lighting the things that they want to see or they understand. Yeah and certainly for black women. If i'm doing things focused on black women. There's nobody like that in a position of power Until now until this last two years with the nicole brown at tristar and alana mayo at who's harvard. Westlake alum by the way nicole brown. Did you know that. no yeah. Nicole brown is a harvard westlake. Alum how did i not know that. I literally talking with the right before this call. Where did all you'll have the woman king so a ranch. She's she's a her studio. Yeah sony right. is that right. Yeah though she runs tristar. Which is right under sony. I guess that's right that's right. Oh my gosh okay..
