In the aftermath of the tragedy. There was a campaign to put more safety systems in helicopters. Those efforts stalled. But now the push is gaining steam again As KCRW's Darryl Sanson reports On the eve of the crash anniversary, California Senator Dianne Feinstein and Northridge Congressman Brad Sherman reintroduced the Kobe and Gina Bryant Helicopter Safety Act. It would require helicopters that can carry six or more passengers to be equipped with a terrain Awareness Warning system, or Tawes, which alerts pilots when they're flying into rising topography. Choppers would also have to have flight and voice recorders. The National Transportation Safety Board says it will announce the results of its investigation into the crash next month. Investigators have previously said the pilot appeared to have become disoriented in heavy fog. And that cause might have saved the chopper from crashing into that Calabasas hillside a year ago. The Federal Aviation Administration has declined a request to make Taz mandatory and the aviation industry opposes Feinstein in Sherman's bill, saying the systems are unnecessary and prohibitively expensive. Sherman, though, tells the L a times that he's optimistic about getting the bill passed this year. For KCRW. I'm Darryl Saxman and Southern California Edison will pay more than $2 billion to settle.

"Yeah, it's horrible. All right. A helicopter safety law inspired by Kobe Bryant and Gina Bryant is getting another chance. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Brad Sherman. For If you're in Northridge that he's your guy in the house, they've reintroduced the Kobe Bryant and John O'Brien Helicopter Safety Act. It would require certain Equipment on all helicopters that carry six or more passengers, warning systems, terrain awareness equipment, and you can go all the way back to 2000 and six and the National Transportation Safety Board said. We recommend that this be a requirement. And why in the and then the FAA Sedna. We're not gonna make it a requirement. So now they're trying to do it through the house election. How much of that was Because of the pressure of the aviation industry, The manufacturing industry pushing, pushing, pushing. Hey, that cost money. We don't like it. That's a very in a cost and it cost a lot of money. I mean, we're not talking $7000 for a transponder. We're talking big dollars for terrain awareness. Okay, let's take a wait. "He just had that technical Now rescinded from the memory was yelling it and James Wiseman the other night and he gets ejected from the game for a tea that the officials thought was it was deemed it. Bamber was directed at them and was not the case. The NBA rescinded that technical Draymond Green comes back next game and Gets a technical foul immediately. Brave on puts that one back on his ledger more from Steve Courier. The question is, you put James Wiseman on the bench. He only played 16 minutes last night. Do you think this is gonna hinder his development or how do you develop him while coming off the bench? Steve Kerr. Well, I would say that development it doesn't equal playing time or vice versa. You know, its development is is really Something that is It's tougher to define. You know, it's really about understanding the game learning the game. Sometimes you can learn observing from the bench a little bit. Um, we're figuring out creative ways to try to teach him in practice sessions. You know, between games, uh, his development is happening all the time. He's working every day with Theo Robertson. Krista Marco watching tape. Uh, you know individual workouts three on three. So it's really the whole process, Nick and, uh, So, as you said from the beginning, we're trying to win games, too. And so, um, I have to figure out what that means. And all it meant tonight was You know, let's let's start Loon. Let's try to get off to a better start flip their roles and I think it's I think it worked out well and doesn't mean I'm going to do with the whole year. It just feels like what I should do right now. How about that? He was saying, You know, the goal is to develop in, but we do want to win games, and I have to figure out what that means. Get the most out of this team. And I think maybe Steve Kerr feels like I think it's probably fair based on the two games. They played right before this, that a he needed to shake up and be that he wasn't getting the most out of his starting lineup. And maybe not the most out of James Wisemen of the thought was, If we can, we can move him to the bench and we can put him in a different role where he's going to start. I'm trying to figure out exactly what he said He'll start the middle of the first and the third quarters as he did Monday, and I think come on. Lenny still came out and started the second period after James Wiseman came out too. Spell him in the middle of the second in the middle of the first. I guess I should said Excuse me middle of the middle, the first in the third. I'm getting twisted up on with the inner and when they leave, But, yes. Oh, the thought that it won't be all year. You just want to get these guys into a rhythm and into a role. I wonder how much shuffling you do, though, And I wonder how much you flip flop back and forth and how much that affects wise wonder if he gets comfortable on a roll. And you say, I don't want to pull him out of this spot because we're finding great success. But I guess that's the That's the hope, right? Is the guy settle into their roles? We joked with that texture the other day, who was talking about the comfortable itty rate right? The Warriors starting lineup was not a high C. He was saying the bench role great. I see. Another admits that and we'll see how it affects him down the stretch. We have more from James Wiseman, who checked in on being benched, which probably not the right term, checked in on being placed in the second unit also gave some thoughts on the first time he met Kobe Bryant, as we remember Kobe and Gina Bryant one year ago. Today was the day that we lost them. So Steph Curry checked in after the game on James Wiseman in his development, all stuff we can get to as well as major league baseball running into a little bit of Ah hiccup here, potentially with the start of spring training in Scottsdale, or I should say in the Phoenix area, Maricopa County, I guess would be a better way of putting it, which would be scheduled to start one month from tomorrow. February, 27th. Supposed to be the first spring training game on a Saturday afternoon in Arizona. So we're gonna talk about that What That's gonna mean as well as the declining of the Universal D H, which they can still change their minds on by April 1st. And the expanded postseason, which now the Major League Baseball Players Association have voted against all stuff we can talk about after we wrap up James Wiseman and Steph Curry Sound on the other side warriors. 1 30 Timberwolves Wanna wait? We're all counting on the covert 19 vaccine to help end the corona virus pandemic. But recently new, more infectious versions of the virus have been showing up around the world. Raising questions about how well the existing vaccines will work against these variants. Today, Vaccine maker Moderna announced its vaccine does seem to work against at least two of the new variants. Joining us to talk about this is NPR's science correspondent Joe Palka, Hijo. Hi, Ari. How did my during a test It's vaccine against these new variants. Well, it took blood from people who'd already been vaccinated and then mix that blood with a synthetic version of the viruses that are popping up and as you, they said, they're particularly interested in the variance that were first seen in the UK and South Africa. He seemed to be especially infectious and then look to see whether there were antibodies in the blood. Of these people who had been vaccinated that can neutralize the virus that is prevented from infecting cells and the vaccines worked. I mean, meaning the antibodies in the blood of people vaccinated could neutralize the virus. But in the case of the variant originating in South Africa, the vaccine the blood didn't do is good. A job of neutralizing it Good enough. They think to protect someone, but not as good. And and and so what does that mean? In terms of people's fears about the vaccines? Failing against these? These new strains? Well, it basically means that people have to be aware that it's possible that this won't work exactly as advertised. Now this was a small study. It doesn't guarantee success or failure at this point, but it's encouraging, at least for now. You know that there is some indication at least that the vaccines are working. And is there a plan of attack if the vaccine turns out not to work as effectively?.
