"An hour after sunrise a bright cloudless day earlier this year. I met gilroy on hampstead heath in north london for walk there are so many migratory birds. Arriving at the moment it's a joy he'd written in an email a few days earlier he was once again dressed in black. This time with a pair of knockers around his neck in with dark tinted circular sunglasses. He left me a pair of bins as he called them. And we walked over the hills and through the ancient woodland. If we're really lucky he said we'll see castro. I'd heard from friends. That gilroy was a bird watcher. But when i first put this to him. He flinched an adult like bird watcher as an identity category. He said he stressed that he does not wear camouflage or go to bird fares and he's not part of that culture the green son speckled heath was almost empty of people. The morning air was piped with birdsong. It was a postal saying the kind. That might be cool. Typically english as we go. Roy identified varieties of by rhapsody over ancient oak trees. He hasn't exacting ear easily distinguishing different species of birds from their interlaced song. A lot of these birds have migrated from west and central africa. Gilroy roy said what can i here right now. I can hear a great tit blue. Tit and there's a particular kind of warbler that sound which comes up from the area between niger and senegal. Later to a bemused university colleague. You happen to be walking by he. Tax them an iced three types of woodpecker the day before gilroy had delivered his inaugural lecture. Uc l. where he has been a professor since two thousand nine hundred ninety five video like he used it to make sense of boris johnson's government amancio report published in march by the government center for race ethnic disparities forgo roy. The reports which clumsily downplayed the significance of racism in british. Life signaled an attempt to wind back the political clock to a time when anger racism could be dismissed as people being. Chippy is designed to be an insult to the likes of me. He told me as we walked the coach. Wars have been simmering for as long as gilroy has been alive in the nineteen eighties. He wrote about how the press would claim labor run councils. Anti-racist endeavors with destroying freedom of speech but much has changed to the conservative cabinet. For instance is more diverse than ever before overtly racist messaging on immigration culture and heritage. He said in the lecture while suck putting the diversity and inclusion of minority government affiliates has so far at least proved to be a way to hold a new electoral bloc together a maintain the high temperature of populist and authoritarian ultra nationalism but really believes the something brittle about the conservatives approach which seeks to launch american spy battles over cultural values. I that the british political class has been entirely bereft of any ideas of its own for a very long time he told me and it's dismal inability to imagine a future for this country. That is not an american future is expressed in the turn toward denouncing critical race. Theory or going on about these things race and racism have never been for him about individual attitudes. They rather constitute a terrain on which politics takes place where social meaning is made in. After empire he describes race is something that absorbs the cries of those who suffered by making them sound less human the triumphant indifference of the uk government to was the suffering of others. It is in the process of making it even harder. For refugees to claim asylum is a sign that race continues to do his pernicious.
The Bourne Identity (2002)
"Hey everybody welcome to another prestige podcasts. Where we perhaps are stretching the definition of prestige I think so. I think this is a prestigious action film anyway. The bourne identity. This is a two thousand two movie directed by doug liman who you might recognize director of swingers. Mrs smith jumper edge of tomorrow american-made. He's the son of a bitch. Made us watch american made. We got all hyped up tom. Cruise in and mister bourne identity in its turns out that was very aggressively average flick. But but he's he's made a couple of good action movies as you can see here. After this paul greengrass over and helmed the rest of the borne trilogy is based on a screenplay written by tony gilroy who you might recognize as the screenwriter of rogue. One devil's advocate. Literally every jason bourne film also wrote and directed michael clayton and william blake. Herron who. I don't even know why his credit for this like only got one other movie credits he's credit created as the co writer. So i guess he did stuff here. He came into some rewrites. Because a studio like lots of this is a. I had no idea. This is such a troubled film making process. They're much butting heads. We'll we'll get to that. I'm sure is based on the bourne identity by one robert ludlum. If you're a. Tom clancy fan. You know. absolute thought robert ludlum is if you're a kid growing up in eighties. Ninety nineties like books The airport bookstores were stuffed full of his political thrillers. Back for their stuff. Full john grisham or after adding it. Yeah it's like. It's like john grisham. Tom clancy and and Ludlum all going for that hyper. Masculine market stars matt damon of course as jason bourne Frank potenza bra who you might recognize from run. Lola run is awesome. Best thing about season to the bridge. Also clio and sneaky little star guest starring role here. Chris cooper brian cox who you'll recognize as the bad political heavy from every political thriller. We've ever seen giant assholes. Good job at it. Julia stiles clive owen. Art talked by clive. Owen and walton goggin. Yeah back before. I knew who he was and he was like in his late. Twenties early thirties still had a fairly full head of hair though. It was in recognizable retreat. Just pops out the do one of the most textbook gap dossier exposition scenes. That you've ever
Marvel's Kevin Feige to visit a galaxy far, far away
"I'm Kim Masters and this is Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter in Mount. I I I don't want. It's hard to be modest. I had a big story. I'm just going to say it about star wars and it's the irony is I'm hardly an expert what about star wars or the Marvel Universe but even with my lack of expertise. I know enough to know that when marble President Kevin Fi sticks his nose into the star the worst tent. It's a big deal yeah. This was a big deal this week and it's basically the acknowledgement by Disney that the marvel all movies have been an unprecedented success in throughout movie history. I mean twenty three hits in a row no producers ever done that and they are giving a star wars movie to Kevin Fi who runs marvel and I say giving he's going to produce a star wars movie now they're saying he's going to produce a star wars movie with Kathy Kennedy who runs Lucasfilm but if you read between the lines here this is a an acknowledgment that all is not necessarily well in the the Star Wars Universe and they are bringing in someone who has a track record of being able to deliver yeah obviously Kevin Foggy is a big star wars fan. That wouldn't be a surprise to anybody. Who Do you know is has anything to do with the Superhero world that he would love Star Wars and and he has had if they have had big problems in the production of their her films. They've managed to keep it pretty quiet. Somehow make things work whereas with star wars there's just been difficulty and I think part of it is can't be Kennedy's ambition and she you know she wanted to. I think I'm just guessing. She's number told me this she wanted to kind of do a version of what warner sit down with Harry Potter bringing an interesting directors like Cuaron to do the film's but but then it didn't always work out I mean the one of the most dramatic things was in two thousand seventeen. She had to fire or chose to fire directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller when they they were making this prequel film solo because they had a different style it was improvisational and star wars to some degree has so much traditional rounded ear bit locked van whereas Kevin Feige he had the advantage of inventing the world's he was creating sure but this gives us a chance to look at the star wars movies that have been made and while it was unquestionably ably successful relaunch with the force awakens in two thousand fifteen after that you know there was some dicey nece in the universe rogue one effectively the director Gareth Edwards was sidelined and replaced by Tony Gilroy. That was the first spinoff movie it was. A success did over a billion dollars. There was a lot of backstage behind the scenes drama on that film then you had the solo stuff that you just referenced and even on the last Jedi which was successful commercials episode eight there was a lot of fan backlash to that movie because it did things with star wars that were not necessarily in line with mythology. It was a little jokey. Not some people didn't like the Princess Leia all the sudden had magical powers like there were some things that fans didn't like and there was backlash to that movie then on episode nine they had to fire another director Colin trevorrow and bring in J.j Abrams who did force awakens to rescue episode nine so this is not been a smooth mood process even though the films with the exception of Solo have been financially successful. Ma just say it will be a long time before we see the Kevin feige movie because I was told years but I don't know how many I don't mean I think they're I think what they're looking at. Is You know the theme park directions that they that they created are not making the noise and doing as as well as the Harry Potter attraction made so much with such as the Harry Potter attraction was such a success so we're seeing maybe maybe the beginning of a transition. Thank you matt.

the founder of eight chan cold for the site to be taken down some of the language in the manifesto echoed remarks by president trump including his use of the word invasion to describe immigrants crossing the southern border on Sunday president trump briefly spoke about the shootings in el Paso in Dayton but did not refer to guns domestic terrorism or white nationalism more supremacy in his remarks president trump is scheduled to address the nation today at ten AM on the presidential campaign trail a number of democratic candidates link the shooting in el Paso to trump's anti immigrant rhetoric former congressman Beto o'rourke who is from el Paso accuse trump of stoking races south bend mayor people to judge said trump is not helping to stop what he described as a quote lethal violent white nationalist terrorism meanwhile senator Bernie Sanders called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to hold a special session of the Senate to pass a gun safety belt they'll Paso attack came just days after a white male shooter attacked the Gilroy garlic festival in northern California killing three people the gunmen in Gilroy promoted an anti immigrant manifesto online just hours before the shooting according to The New York Times white extremists shooters have killed at least sixty three people in the United States over the past eighteen months we go now to el Paso we're we're joined by two gas struts are Blanco is a democratic member of the Texas house of representatives Fernando Garcia is the founding director of the border network for human rights and advocacy group based now passed away welcome you both to democracy now first of all condolences on the Harvard that is taking place in your community and I'll pass so we want to begin with SSR Blanco on if you could talk about what your tell us about your community in el Paso and then tell us what you're demanding right now well thank you Amy are a boss who is a warm welcome mean bi national community located on the US Mexico border our sister city to the south of us in Mexico twice we are a community that is very tight knit we are a community that opens its arms to immigrants and welcomes immigrants this community is a community of immigrants my father was an immigrant from the state if you are one in Mexico and this is tragic and it's it's horrible that were seen these type of acts of violence and murder tied to white supremacy occurring here in our in our communities Hey we need to see action we need the words of the president have been harmful and a it's a it's unfortunate that this president has not condemned this white national of violent acts here in our communities and other communities across the country and work it's horrible that the United States Senate has not taken any action in terms of gun reform to not allow these type of weapons to reach the hands of these individuals who wants to create havoc and fear in our communities cry for us what you understand took place on Saturday morning at that Walmart well early about ten to ten thirty there were calls nine one one calls to police a good man began firing in the parking lot of Walmart a here in el Paso and he entered the though the store began shooting and firing at individuals this community is majority Latino he drove a in six hundred miles to perform these acts of violence against our community we have seen in his manifesto the level of hate toward our community in toward immigrants in this country and clearly looks like it was an intentional act throughout the day families of had been waiting to hear news so they set up a family reunification center in the elementary school that I attended as a kid to allow families to wait here is the good news the bad news unfortunately for many the bad news is that their family members were killed by this individual Fernando Garcia at founding director of the border network for human rights on can you talk about the report said some survivors were afraid to get help maybe they were injured but afraid because of their status right now their immigration status yes Amy are present wild let the last actually two days we had received several calls from families that where a freight of actually going into the hospitals and clinics because they they soulful mainly border patrol personnel and vehicles in they were actually not report the in the in your face and they were actually going to the hospitals and clinics on their own so they call us and what we need is we will eventually we called our congresswoman esquire because we wanted the border patrol in nice actually eastern a statement that they would not enforce immigration laws these days in el Paso and I think people as they are for it's still a friend of that because he didn't before this the shooting happened people were afraid already off immigration enforcement so I think a little a little people is getting away with more comfortable obviously but is gonna take a little bit more than that in the spring we are you still receiving calls of people being afraid of reporting their injuries stool that hospitals and that though it is because so far the few that we have with the immigration do you believe that Latinos were targeted I mean clearly in this so called manifesto I mean right before the gunmen opened fire at the Walmart in el Paso he then posted this anti immigrant screed apparently attributed to him appeared online the manifesto is titled the inconvenient truth about me it reads in part quote I support the Christ Church shooter and his manifesto this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas they are the instigators not may I am simply defending my country from cultural ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion Hispanics will take control of the local and state government of my beloved Texas changing policy to better suit their needs they will turn Texas into an instrument of a political cool which will hasten the destruction of our country the manifesto read it also cites the great replacement theory the white nationalist right wing conspiracy theory which was also invoked during the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in Virginia in two thousand seventeen when the neo **** chanting tools will not replace us the author of the

first the shooting in el Paso where twenty people were killed and twenty six were injured and in Dayton early this morning were nine people were killed and twenty seven people were injured for us not to talk about that would be what I could do it I mean it's been all over the news it's something that I know last night some of my family was over and we were talking about it and my wife and I have been talking about it and it's the first thing that a lot of people are talking about and some people said to me today he can get you know don't don't talk about it just keep things light and have a good time and we listen we listen to have fun it was a we're gonna have some fun I think we've already had fun where else you gonna get hunger games a draconian punishments for fence jumpers but this is serious thing and it's something that I don't I don't like to talk about guns on the air it's one of those things when I started they said listen if there are two things that are always going to get people in range talk about guns or abortion and the phone lines are going to let up but it's going to be people who are just want to scream and yell and you know this is well as I do in the current climate you can't really have a civil rational conversation about guns because unfortunately over the last twenty four hours I think a lot of people fell into two camps when they heard about the shootings in el Paso and in Dayton one group of people said that's it we got to get rid of all guns and the other group said oh no here come the liberal bleeding hearts snow flakes they want to take all our guns so once you've gone into the foxhole of your side you don't want to poke your head up you don't want to listen to what other people have to say and while there are number of people who and a lot of people are willing to have a conversation but unfortunately the loudest voices drown those out and those voices tend to be the ones that fall in one of those camps and so you know how many of you were on social media today and you saw somebody post something about about the shooting one side or another and then it devolved into these hateful posts and I I got sucked on the worm hole of one thread from a friend of mine and when I finish reading all these posts as a this was one of phenomenal waste of time two it does me no good helping to go through my feelings and filtered out and give more rational thought to what's going on and three not one of those people who posted change anybody's mind so it's easy to just let's throw up our hands and forget it well we can't just forget it because it keeps happening and the read the other reason we can't throw up our hands because it does keep happening and how many of you were really shocked by it I think the only reason Dayton shocked this is much is because it came in such close proximity to el Paso when the Paso shooting happened yesterday Friday I was shocked one because I've been at that mall I've been in that Walmart many times when I used to work on the road I spent a lot of time in el Paso and I knew exactly where that was it when you hear them say you can see Mexico from the parking lot that's not hyperbole that's not I could see Russia from my house it's literally you stand outside that mall outside that Walmart and it's about a half a block from the interstate interstate ten and on the other side of the interstate is Mexico so Paso truly is a multinational city so one I was I was affected because twenty people had been killed just going shopping you know going for back to school supplies and then more comes out about the shooter and the fact that I'd been there so I so a past was like oh man that you know like we all did man this this is awful but then the second part of my thought was well it's just another one and that's what's happening all we keep saying is well that's another that's another one so I think we have to look at this in a number of different ways because Hey America this is the twenty first mass killing in twenty in twenty nineteen we're only in August the twenty first think about that for me think about all the people have been killed in the first eight months of this year it's amazing now lot of people are gonna fall back on this being a gun issue it's all about banning guns so about restricting guns it's all about the guns and while guns definitely play a part in this guns are the only thing but we have to look at guns we also have to look at the different social issues the rise of racially motivated hate crimes the deep division in this country we have to look at legislation was so we'll talk a little bit about that we have to we have to look at something else that there is I've been reading about this about the isolation of individuals in this country in some numbers that are really really shocking about how isolated some of us feel and why that isolation then it can lead to anger and can lead to falling in with people who will bolster your beliefs because they're going to give you a message that finally you can belong in some way so now if you want to jump in I'd love to have you three one two nine eight one seven two hundred the other thing I want to touch on is the high falls focus that I heard a lot today as I was watching all the news programs about this being a mental health issue and I think while while it in part is to lump it in and use that as an excuse why it can't be solved because well we don't have money to solve all the mental health issues that's not the focus that should be the focus because really let's be honest there's a lot of things that can be deemed a mental health issue any sort of crime you could say is a mental health issue if I'm a shoplifter there well there's something in my brain that tells me that's okay and I'm not equating shoplifting with mass killings obviously I'm saying that we need to what we need to focus on mental health in this country we can't dismiss the mass killings as just a mental health issue we have to we have to look at that as part of it because this is a multi pronged thing all right so let's take a quick break no we'll we'll start breaking it down guns legislation the the social implications all of that and I want to know basically what you are feeling today three one two nine eight one seven two hundred what are we going to reach a point in this country where enough is enough because I'm tired of the I'm tired of the cycle I'm tired of the violence then the thoughts and prayers then everybody calling for this or that and then it being gone until the next one well this time it this day this last twenty four hours didn't give us a lot of time to wait for the next one el Paso Dayton last week Gilroy last night in Chicago in Douglas park it just keeps happening how's it making you feel three one two nine eight one seven two hundred I'll talk to you a more after this
Another weekend, two more mass shootings in America
"As we continue to talk about the mass shootings that have happened not only in Dayton but also in el Paso and you know if we we get there maybe out in Gilroy California garlic festival that happened about a week ago SO three of these inside of a week two of them thirteen hours apart and it amazes me that we still have these kinds of things I I don't see we still have these things have been selected happen all the time they do what happened I don't want to discount the fact that these of happened in rapid succession but it's what it it's hard for me to wrap my brain around why somebody does this and again the as we heard in the update the gunman's sister is among those who are deceased validate in Dayton that I don't know how that's going to play in but that I guarantee you I would put money on it that is a factor speculation could be that he went out and show you she was going to be in that area and he went out and did that specifically because that speculation that is right your speculation but speculation could also be that she just haven't been in some bystander be one of them that could be as well now in something and and Jeff you've just briefly mention this off the air and I do want to touch on is because I hadn't even thought about this part of it what if it is in the happier anywhere let's go back to the basics and the date and shooting in particular happened and what they call the Oregon district IV if you're not for mers organ district it literally is in downtown it's are I heart radio stations we have eight of them there are right there we talked to at about eleven thirty or so with our guy who's in the building who said it literally is outside his door because it's the the the restaurant bar where the shooting occurred outside their doors none of the shooting took place indoors in right it was all outdoors was right outside the I heart radio stations in Dayton and this could this could have taken place anywhere this could have taken place add to that in our renew district which is exactly the kind of a scenario that that organ district is it's as much like the arena district it's a Jeff Stevens said to us it is an entertainment area with restaurants and bars and a bunch of folks out until all hours of the day going to be down on High Street that's right that's right but this could have happened very easily in a place like the hive state fair which today's the last day that housed a fair could happen in a high stakes game football game the fact is this can happen anytime anywhere and it's part of being a free society Bob moments ago you and I were talking a little bit off there and we're talking after the interview with chief of police does Tom Quinn and we talk about investigations of police departments what they're doing you took your headphones off and said this is why I don't live in the city of Columbus I live in a township it has nothing to do with the with the police presence or the law enforcement officer let me make that very clear yeah I don't live in the city of Columbus I live in the township for the fact that I do I don't like the direction the Columbus goes in I don't like the way that the Columbus officers are treated by the city I don't think they get a fair shake and I know you're making a political statement I can make politicians it's about our city council it's about those in leadership positions in government right and it's it's those people that I don't agree with I I am served by the Franklin County sheriff's office they actually have two vehicles and I know for a fact that are assigned to the township where I live and god bless these guys I talked to I see him all the time I see them outside of the grocery store that I go to I see him at the restaurant to the mat and I talked to these guys their fantasy Hey ladies let me be fair on that the deputy sheriff's deputy troll my area thank you I appreciate your service believe me does not go unnoticed and the the officers in Columbus your service does not go unnoticed or any jurisdiction for that matter I salute you all because I think you all have a very hard job I think you have a I thank Liz job you do not get thanked enough for what you do and with that being said a you know as the the officers that are here in Columbus so happy that you guys one board with that is I'm so happy that you guys do what you do again I can't thank you enough for is serving because you protect you serve you do a job that is anon incredibly hard job I don't know that I could go out and do it and I've known a lot of police officers over my time I've known him very well some of I count the an officer in the jurisdiction out on the west side of town as one of my better friends and I can call up and ask questions of and you guys do a great job but I don't think that the Columbus police department gets a fair shake from the city and I I I don't like it enough part of the reason for multiple reasons but that's one of the reasons why I don't live within the city limits of Columbus it's interesting I one of the people I follow on Twitter is John legend and you know John legend's great voice just great voice and he tweeted moments ago he said when we condemn the races venom coming from the president's mouth and point out the bigotry of his policies it's not an academic question it's not a political game it's about life and death the president president regularly inspires killers he is a part of the problem at one time that I was actually just a little while ago and again this comes back to what's going to happen moving forward and if you are on the right side of the aisle and in favor of of the second amendment you're gonna see it one way and if you're in the left side of the island you disagree with that you're gonna see a completely different way which is interesting because we have callers who feel very strongly about this right bomb they they do and that's we're taking your calls a two one WTVN one hundred six ten WTVN Joe thanks for hanging on I appreciate your on news radio six ten WTVN you with me joke yeah I just was I'm tired of selective outrage on the lab I'd like to I think we know how many people were killed in el Paso how many were killed in date this weekend I get upset every weekend when I hear it accounts for Chicago and Baltimore I think we should be constantly out rate not just selectively outrage I agree with you it is the selective outrage is open if you if you would put it in those terms is it is mind boggling to me because again it seems like we only care about the things that are high profile because that's what we get attention on if you want to be outraged if these celebrities wanna be outraged indeed correct me if I'm wrong John legend is is from the Dayton area isn't he yes he's from Ohio yes I I know is from over that way somewhere why isn't he outraged at what happened in date I mean what did the president say that could have that trigger date I don't see what it is but again it's at fifteen minutes of my your eyeball is on me and what I'm saying why don't we have somebody who is actually saying it happens here it happens here happens here it happens here it happens here let's address this as a unit as opposed to saying look at me I want to be important for ten seconds so Joe I I I'm with you on that Joe thank you for your call good afternoon all right thank you appreciate it eight two one W. T. V. N. one hundred six ten WTVN I'll calls are stacking up we still got room for you I want to hear what your opinion is on this because again this is something that is at some point going to touch every last single solitary one of us you're going to know somebody you're gonna be in the same areas where this happened you know it's not localized to date is not localized el Paso if not localized anywhere it could happen here tomorrow it could fit let's face facts we don't know what the next day brings but we can at least address what has
