"On that and then i'm supposed to make an indian the near future which excited to do and i'm trying to start producing more things so sort of acquiring properties starting to go out with them so shooting the short yeah thank you so much yeah i directed a short documentary a few years ago so i've been trying to do more yeah so i'm interested in and seeing what else in this business i'd like to pursue beyond acting so maybe i'll be back here with you guys in a few years for something it was basically a producer on the movie she was involved in every aspect of it and we and there's like a there's a thing that we're producing together right now were trying to put together and she's an incredible producer yeah well it's i think the thing that was to turn your one quick round into like a five more minutes i mean i've just seen so many directors fold under less difficult shooting conditions than alex and so when you see someone be able to stand their ground like he said fight for the things he believed in remain an open fund collaborator and and just make you believe more and more in the project as you're working on it that's a really rare thing so you wanna keep working with those people that's the whole goal i think is to find the people that feel like bring out the best in you and and just keep working with them let that's what you see you see it with the best directors they work with the same people currently it's ryan kugler and michael jordan yeah they worked together and they make great stuff yeah it's you hear it all the time again not to turn this into another fight but you do you hear it all the time it's like your biggest issues directors number one on the call sheet right well we're never wanted to call she is gillian that that that doesn't only not become your biggest issue it becomes your greatest strength you know like it was gillian was so committed to the project such great collaborator on the whole thing that as the movie went on that became such an easy relationship to lean on in terms of that we were really like helping each other continued to make this movie as you know the weeks turn into months.

"The airport words in there for the airport where it was so yeah looks like they they bought in really early on they were enjoying watching the dailies just watching the cast perform and they gave us like a great opportunity to continue to send the materials we're getting the film so they could like start to game plan for it and i think that like you know they make so much they're not gonna be able to market everything the fact that they got so behind this film and push it internationally and that's been a crazy thing is just that it's like being washington such crazy numbers around the world like it's really wild and netflix yes the long story short is like it's a really nice place i think especially you know always time these middle range of films of these middle range budgets and like netflix is creating an environment for that where you really like like i say it's not was that do you think the movie on netflix i indiana jones at home for the first time you know like i didn't i wasn't the first time i signed the jones it didn't make it not a movie to me and netflix is going okay we're gonna the we're gonna bring back that middle range of films and find the audience for it and they're doing it and it's kind of amazing that our i think our movie is more than this but like i think the whole rom com genre they're tapping into because they don't sell the tickets the way they used to the people still wanna see i think they're really tapping into that specially at home that's the thing the best place to watch it comfort food yes which again i in the cape ism comfort film and escapism these are not for letting words it is not a bad thing to make something that makes people happy yes nothing wrong with that and no one should think you only do this you only do that no of course not and and yet netflix has it's been it's been exciting film nerd it's been exciting and we've talked to so many people at this point de reese was so excited that when people watch mudbound they would immediately find pariah afterwards and.

"That didn't that you just didn't need the year fine make your movie okay as an executive producer on the film she's been this is what now at the end of this year it's like five years of you work on this movie i came on right before like right isn't that was coming on so l k is seen this movie through years and years of studio development many so my spirit like just mike was just kinda golden i came in she had or kind of god it was quote to see you we've been friends for so long and work done so many things but never anything this scale and the moment we started working on the script which would have been march or april of last year like i remember you being like there's no i'm so used to thinking what's the studio going to say about this and now we're just free to make the movie we wanna make and like you saw that like open up thing in in your mind to whereas like oh i'm gonna make this movie the most personal it can be and the more that we dove into that and then she was so generous to fold me into that process and then to full the actors into the process and i think that like netflix supported there you're going to make this comedy and we've brought you all on and we trust you to do it and we really encouraged everybody involved from from the actors to the dp to the editors to everybody find a way into the film find a way into make it personal for yourself and that's the thing that like you don't even have time to have that conversation if you're just down with with the studio conversation but everybody on the film got to make it something that matter to them while i actually gotten really big triple the airport flying home going through manchester my husband's from manchester that's where i live when i'm not here and coin through manchester airport and their securities little much be little bit intense even some people who work there will look if their colleagues.

"And it doesn't turn out so great great this was a great one because i've had you know films i've done where i've walked away with lifelong friendships i'm not sitting talking to anyone doing a podcast about it so i feel like this was also a special experience for me because i found people in l kane alex that i felt like were working as hard as i was were smart were funny were creative and had done everything right in the pre production so that you know it was summer camp and i'm proud of the film at the end of yeah something else we've learned from my dad's classes he's taught for twenty years now he comes away always saying no one sets out to make that move no and that if anything is is always what you try to remember i'm really that things but that's yeah frankly you wanna be working yeah that that's a huge part of it you want to work you know so maybe it's not high art sometimes but i mean really maybe it's something that small maybe it's just something can we make coca cola jokes is that a thing that we can because see you on my tv everyday fast so yeah just just be who you are coke you guys but you know it's there different things you do for different reasons sometimes you want to work and that's why you do it sometimes it's an location you like sometimes it's the people you like and those are all okay things it's fine but it is nice when you can walk away and feel like you made something and it brings you joy and it brings everybody else joyous you work long hard hours on bad movies to whether things turn out good or bad it's still a long hard job yes always just feel like let's just put in that extra five percent of thought in like care to what we're doing because we're gonna be here marginally different amount of time to make the thing that's not good let's take the time in like focus it towards could be good so what do you think you learn sorry what do you think you learned because this is and i realized it'd be loaded but but this is a big deal for you guys this is a bigger film and netflix of course man netflix is promoting them out next question let's get.

"The cab and we were like we're gonna we want like a half a day for this in the production team was like for what really no no we just like we're gonna have all of us there we want to just like have a half a day to just improvise that and play jokes l kenner just sitting there video village and gillian vanessa and fever wandering through this alley and we just did it for like four or five hours see drunk delirious yes we're yeah we're like was it the sun was rising news second half the day it was it was a night you yeah yeah i mean i left out in that situation because i was wearing that unicorn the warm yeah the other two girls were far colder than i was i was just fine in men's slippers yeah yeah briefs as the movie went on the colder at got the more fun you guys have with it like out in we're going to wait for the actors response such a good time there's like you guys got bench seen like the we ended up cutting this out of the movies so funny but the scene where after the sunset there waiting for a cab a six minute scene in the rough cut of the film that is entirely improvised by the three of them just it is it is like one of my favorite scenes just no purpose you know but it was like hey you can wrap up we're we know it's cold we'll go home and then the three of them no no this is funny let's do another one sitting on by dock with the wind whipping and it was so cold and of course much yeah we'll of course when we started shooting the film it was actually like one hundred four degrees and then by the time we wrapped the film it was in like the sixties into the fifties at night so you like you know and because it's film takes place over over a couple of days you end up wearing the same costumes for most of it so it was like the tanks short that fell aok at one hundred four by the end of the sheer you're like.

"I was very much like this is my guy and then you know he was with the producer we talked about what i was gonna come in and talk about because i wanted to make sure that her and i were on the same page so you had been years since we first talked about it and i wanted to make sure that we still had the same vision for zoo so i won't to that point like i was i wanna come in and pitch if we don't want to make the same movie like i don't want a we've been friends for too long to go in with friction so we talked a lot about what it is that we wanted to the same dead and then basically got him he knew gary sanchez productions was producing and then it was also good universe and did university really know him as well so it was more about having them understand and see who he was as a director and know that this is our guy so i wasn't actually there when he was sort of winning it over there but they knew how i felt because i was the one that sort of brought him up for the game i was like he's my guy did you can you i'm not asking you to to necessarily name them did you have role models when you're writing the screenplay because there is it is shown the wish fulfillment girlfriends on an experience or an adventure vacation trying to find somebody to connect with yet and of course every generation has had these betty gravel is in a film called moon over miami and it's the same story and they go to miami they changed the setting so they go to yeah it is and their songs and an handsome leading men and what's the name premise i'm moon over miami what's the premise of it what they're going to meet a go get married gold diggers go to miami with one thought in mind foulland husband's a wealthy chat and they're all sort of on the same track and i think the maybe even be conspiring for betty grable it's not necessarily that all three need to get husbands but shares an older movie that i actually really liked called heartbreakers that's like jennifer love hewitt leave i kinda liked that movie but that's a similar.

"And it just felt right yeah the three of us met for coffee and just remember leaving there feeling like that's exactly how i wanted to go she's game for anything she's going to be perfect we were so excited leaving me also just like opened up our minds of what the movie could be you know like it's sort of like it expanded our our thought process to like oh now we've got an actor of this capability there's so many places movie can go and there's so many themes we can touch on and and then also now you start getting incoming calls from other people that want to act with gillian you know like there's always people who want to work with gilead in it so a big part of why our cast is so spectacular is because people want to work with her so it just makes the whole thing work you know well let's talk about the the casting of her to pal yeah it's a this is a girlfriend with a capital g and so i hate that we're chemistry but sometimes no synonym really really does the job it's about the relationship and if that relationship doesn't seem credible even even though it's a farcical comedy if that relationship doesn't hold together there's no movie yeah well you know vanessa was the next person on and she's somebody who i think we all just nestle bear vanessa there yeah who i think we all just such a a brilliant comedian such brian performer and we were excited the idea of seen her play a real person across a whole film you know we've seen her in so many brilliant sketches in an all these supporting roles or she's so funny but we were like how great would it be to see her do this for ninety minutes and and she and so we were just so excited to be able to get her and.

"Gillian jacobs folks visa comes out on net flicks friday may twenty fifth it's really fun really good time movie we like to wrap up every bull's eye episode with culture recommendation from me we call it the outshot in mr turner timothy spall plays the lead the legendary painter j m w turner and he says a lot of things but none of the things he says are more expressive than this and this and this in making mr turner mike lee the director and spall faced a great challenge how do you convey the brilliance of a painter in a narrative medium it's hard enough to make a by graphical film about a musician but i'd much rather watch somebody play guitar than paint do you watch the paint smear around point the camera at the wall and wait space an impossible task but it's one that these great artists were up to my goodness oh i have quite overweight would you wish you jewish oh my visa breath taking they know my dear late father would have much appreciated the one thing there's this many of lee's films are shot very plainly they're realistic there developed through months of improvisation and they don't really highlight stylish camera work it's a way of looking in on everyday lives mr turner lets us look in on a life here too but it's a visual life and the camera reflects turner's great gift the manipulation of light the sky the streets the see all come alive just like turner's paintings their luminous but then in contrast there spall as turner he's not luminous at all these squat and scowling not ugly exactly but almost painfully unglamorous the opposite of his work he's like one of those knotty pine trees that grows on an ocean side cliff gnarled and tough.

"And i guess i'm supposed to laugh at that the one of the worst ones is gillian jacobs who we'd know he's seen her community we know and love and she's she's a good enough actress they are so inconsistent with her like they one gags that she was on the coma and that doesn't really play into anything as much as they try to make it sets up oh yeah gilio jay watson well but but she like even when the cameras there she's in a shot and she's just making weird expressions and you're like wait she angry is she is she with this as she confused yeah yeah if you notice when this movie starts her hair is blonde and then it's brunette all reshoots as long as we talk about the girls in the sorority yeah you got all them being weird and crazy but then her daughter i don't know what direction she had if any but she was terrible yes she was like a moment with like she's supposed to be feeling like just heartbroken and destroyed and debby ryan that plays a thing i think debbie ryan is the main girl k we'll i'll tell you the reason why actually like the daughter in the movie yeah let me explain her daughter was the only one that wasn't weird as you said you got the goth roommate you get all these they make these are not characters they have they have weird traits so they can write them short hanley i've been a coma i'm aware goth girl who scared of everything like sleep like vampire the wheel girl that likes to ask questions we questions and this girl was the only one that was kind of normal and plus with her story line in a movie where everything is so exaggerated the point of just being over ridiculous for move even like this.
