"How do you get more air in your voice. More breath in your voice. It's kind of sighing sighing. At the same time try it. Try it terry gross sign. Yeah the same time like very nice as authoritative as her. I don't think i sound. But i see your point. I could work it up. Just give me time. i'll get back to you. It takes practice. it takes. I i find thatcher a very interesting figure in part because like she really is a pioneer in the world of women in politics. She's the first british prime minister in england. And she knows she's up against a very like male oriented government and yet she doesn't seem to generalize to other women and to become a supporter of feminism and women's rights. Well i think the fact that she was in office normalized female success. And i think that you know goals who grew up. When she was running the country were suddenly able to imagine leadership as a female quality. But at the same time. She wasn't a feminist. She didn't have interest in social equality. She didn't really know anything about female solidarity. She had a lack of interest in childcare provision and positive action and and so she wasn't really a feminist on and yet she allowed young women to imagine that women could be suited to power her presence. There was a real dichotomy the fact that she only brought one woman cabinet member and the eleven years that she was office into the cabinet is remarkable astounding and at the same time felt that she could control. Stand up to be on the same level. Same footing as all the conservative men that was rounding was incredibly. You know it wasn't just incredibly male dominated. It was entirely male-dominated. yes yes. The crown knows is focusing on part on mortgages relationship with queen elizabeth. The second two very powerful women in order to portray thatcher you had to learn about some of the customs that you follow when you're in the presence of the queen. What are some of those customs that you found like most interesting or most baffling or confusing that you grew up as a monarchist and she had almost a mystical reverence for the monarchy. But at the same time she was anxious she was nervous. An obsequious and there was a rigidity too to the way that she behaved..

Anderson can now be seen in two very popular and very different netflix series. Yesterday the fourth season of the crown was released. Introducing anderson into the cast as britain's prime minister margaret thatcher and contrasting her with another powerful woman queen elizabeth the second anderson also co stars in the net flicks comedy series sex education as sexy yet uptight sex therapist who's constantly embarrassing. Scully the doctor. Who's assigned to work with david. Coveney's character fox mulder. An fbi agent investigating paranormal phenomena and government conspiracies. Scully is the skeptic believing in science not aliens. The series lasted for eleven seasons in spun off two movies. Let's start by talking about the crown featuring anderson as margaret thatcher the leader of the conservative party who became britain's first woman prime minister in nineteen seventy nine and served for eleven and a half years her administration up ended british society emphasizing deregulation privatization weakening of trade unions and deep spending cuts that frayed the country's social service net in this scene thatcher arrives for who weekly audience with the queen holding up a copy of the sunday times that or is angry correctly. Assuming that the queen has leaked to the press that she's displeased at thatcher's cuts to the social safety net and her resistance to imposing economic sanctions against apartheid south africa. This goes against the queen's tradition of never publicly expressing political opinions or speaking against her government. The queen played by olivia. Colman is trying to deny having engineered the league thatcher speaks i. I think we have enough respect for one another personally to us. Also of the big questions woman to woman. We are the same age awful really just six months between us. And who is the senior on caring. Confrontational and socially divisive. That's how these is so close to the queen described me. I luck compassion and that my government has done irretrievable damage to the country. Social fabric my responsibility. For the time i have an office is to put sentiment talented to one side and look after this country's interest with the perspective of a cold bench sheet and while i greatly admire your sense of fairness and compassion for those less fortunate. They're not do you really let us not forget that over the two of us. I am the one from a small street in an irrelevant town with a father who could not bequeath a title or a common wells but only grit good sense and determination. And i don't want people's pity or charity or compassion. Nothing would insult me. More meyde go is to change this country from being dependent to self reliant. And i think in that i am succeeding. I have had to learn many difficult lessons as sovereign. Britain's are learning to look after number one to get ahead and only then if they choose to look after their neighbor off. Those zoo would remember the good samaritan if he only had good intentions you see. He had money as well gillian anderson. Welcome to fresh air. And congratulations on your performance in the crown. Thank you very much. Some actors really like putting on clothing of a character and feel like the clothing helps them get into the character. And you know with margaret thatcher. You're wearing this. like really. Like straight laced clothing. She seems choice seemed to be such like a rigid starched. Person and her hair literally looked stark. She'd have this lick nineteen fifty s early nineteen sixties kind of hairdo very like booth font and it looked like it was like glued glued together And yes she. I mean she just seemed physically rigid. Can you talk about what you wore. And also the voice that you assumed to play because as we could hear in your portrayal mortga thatcher. She had a very measured strong. Precise slow powerful way of speaking will take hall. Who is our hair makeup guru on the crown talks about the silhouette of all the characters but in thinking about that. Just a wet. That is both you know. Both her particular girth coupled with the outline of as you say that boo phone slash helmet and then her particular walk which she pumped her left arm as she held Right arm cooked with the humbug over it and she would pump arm and walk in quite small steps. Even you know ahead of reagan ahead of gorbachev a heads of whoever. She was working within their own country. But it was really. I think getting comfortable enough in vocal qualities which you know as you say is very measured and it said trip but she would also known for her pitch sometimes especially in party conferences or when she was talking to large crowds and performing as she knew that she was good at doing she did raise the temperature and her pitch and The energy going into it. And so there's a lot more fluctuation in her public voice than we necessarily see in the crown in so many of these indoor scenes. Could you demonstrate what you mean by the fluctuations of her pitch. She would talk like this and she would very much breathe. Outwards went to his big and she would take a breath in so that. If you were going to interrupt her she would breathe over and talk over you. But then sometimes if she was talking in an to an audience and so there was a great many people who are speaking she could really kinda bring the voice pair and speak to the larger crowd. And you know she. Would you know. That's great she. Yeah you portray thatcher with a slight hoarseness to your voice. How did you do that without hurting your voice. There's so much breath in voice that it was easy enough to to be able to ground it in you know lower down on the diaphragm and And not go to throaty. How do you get more air in your voice more breath in your voice. It's kind of sawing sighing at the same time. try it. Try it terry gross. I think yeah at the same time. Like very nice l. as authoritative as. I don't think so. I sound.

The Crown drops today, innit Gillian Anderson plays Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrine is Princess Diana. Here's NPR TV critic Eric Deggans. As the crown's outstanding fourth season begins. It is 1979 and Margaret Thatcher is taking powers, the first female prime minister in British history At first Queen Elizabeth played with until IUs reserved by a Livia Coleman sees a potential ally and another powerful woman defending her to Tobias Menzies, Prince Philip. As they watch that you're on TV. Last thing this country needs what two women running the shop next Prime Minister. Perhaps that's precisely what this country needs. But then they have the first of many regular meetings to discuss government business. And the queen discovers Thatcher isn't exactly jumping on the train The sisterhood when she asked who will be in her Cabinet? I'm assuming they women Women. In cabinet? No, certainly not well, not just because there aren't any suitable candidates. But I have felt women in general tend not to be suited to high office. Why's that? Well, they become too emotional. I doubt we'll have that trouble with me. That's an excellent bit of foreshadowing because viewers will find the Queen's inability to express emotion and the tremendous impact it has on her family is one of the key storylines in this season of the crown. In fact, the season features two overarching, exquisitely told tales, Thatcher's rise and fall and the start of Prince Charles is marriage to Diana Spencer, the woman the world would come to know as Lady Diana. Marriage story reflects worst on Prince Charles, who was browbeaten into proposing to Diana despite being in love with the married Camilla Parker Bowles. In particular, Charles is swayed by a note written by his great Uncle Lord Mountbatten just before his death. Hear Mountbatten. This played by Charles Dance, My Dear.

"Great all day doing saying Oh my God you have no choice but to just go for it with this is you. You get it in writing you say. Listen listen you get you get her next to the Flip Cup table And you say are you open. Are you not yeah. Because she's all like we need some clarity from from this kid and I actually think something that I'm surprised you didn't bring up. That neither of cost to do is sort of broach it mid scene. Have you tried sort of initiating a scene that is about this like because I find that you should be able if you can. If you're a good Improv live team you should be able to because I saw don't think twice And I find that a lot of their issues were being worked out. Sort of within the IMPROV scene gene. When Gillian Anderson went into that whole you know and so I think you need to sort of improvised your own hole onstage and sort of win there but when the two of them are we're on stage together you just need to sort of pop in? Does she do Improv. Yeah he doesn't know he's on a different team though uh-huh oh wow so you should you should do is just burn it all down. quit that one team and only do the other team and the now why do you need to be on two different teams. Isn't that a conflict of interest. That question one is more lake. AAC trying really hard and competitive and the other is more like feel good. Okay which one is the. The boy on is really competitive. One one yeah toxic and then she's on the field again one tracks really well because she makes you feel good and is the feel. Oh good one like worse. I'm just asking because I know this. I know this world baby. Yeah I think I think we're team. Just go for it. Go for it are you. Are you like are you. Do you have you feelings for this person. a little bit but then there was like a weird stuff and then I kind of did it. But it's like when you see someone to really good Improv. Sometimes it's like okay. Maybe.

The Watch - Reviewing 'The Bodyguard'
"Now I am joined by Juliet Littman to have a shot about bodyguard. Okay. Julia. I've watched on episode five I have not watched episode five, but I'm on episode five. And so this will be a spoiler inclusive episode taking in the first four episodes finished bodyguard. Yes has finished bodyguard. Cayenne, I on the money team with her eyes on Monday when I sit she said, did you watch bodyguard? And I was like watching episode about how about you. She's like watch all I detest around that is nothing wrong with it. In fact, it just makes me feel ashamed as a television podcast her. I wish I had more. I'm like, what do I do? Now. That's a great way to start it off. Yeah. What an incredibly paced show such an amazing like return on investment. You know, does it remind you of homeland. They reminds me of how I felt I season homeland me tale. It's like a feeling I have a TV feeling. I haven't felt in a while, which is exhilarating siding. So I think they I I'm curious about. This. I came to you this morning, and you know, in the third episode of the end of the third episode of bodyguard, they're huge spoiler. Warning. We're spoiling force even sow just one more warning. Here you go. There's an explosion at a speech that the home secretary. Julia Montague extra secretary secretary. How did I sit home state, which is call her mom? There's an explosion at a species giving a college and she passes away from her injuries. She dies from her. She blows. Yeah. It's not funny. No. But I found myself immediately just kind of being like that's not why I was watching the show. I was watching the show because of the central tension between David and Julia, and this idea that they could be so politically and sort of philosophically apart. But so close together in other ways till you're saying you're like shocked bummed that she I was very very ended a romance. And I was very into the tension that they had on screen, and you're saying that you obviously the show's pivoting towards unraveling this conspiracy around Julia's death, Cheryl, but were you disappointed to see that the way it was happening that she died. Yeah. No. I wasn't at all. I didn't really care what their romance. And I'm a big romance person. Obviously, I love melodrama, and I love a soap opera, but I didn't find it that believable. And that's because I really like the show. I find Richard Madden's character a little confused. Ding has so. I can't tell what his true motivation is like is it to be a patriot. Is it choose to avenge the deaths of his friends and Afghantistan? Yeah. Is it is it to pursue a political agenda? I've finished the season as discussed completely know. And to me, that's a failure of writing not acting. Whereas with his counterpart on game of thrones can Harrington. I'd be like, yeah. That guy's the worst actor. So this is the first British television show that has been sort of presented initially is somewhat limited series and turned into a juggernaut. And they've done another series of it's a broad church is not unlike this where if you watch broad church, you're not like what's going to happen in season two broad church. Love Brocher broad church students so popular they were like, well, we have to do something. The fall is lost like that. Would Jamie Dornan Gillian Anderson where they were just like it was pretty much like a who done it like cat and mouse thriller, and then they teased it out for another three or four seasons. Now, you can kind of get away with that England 'cause you can just do a four episode show like. They do Sherlock. Sometimes just three. Yeah. But I do think that this was something where the popularity of bodyguard might have actually changed the way because there's going to be a second season of this show. So it might have changed the perception of
