"But later on, it became more steady at the seller and that Caroline's on Broadway. And then, yeah, those are the ones that I remember when I got into Caroline. I mean, when I got into the cellar, I was working there like 7, 8 shows at night, you know, whatever. Yeah, yeah, it was crazy. It was going everything. At least 5 shows. And then, you know, Caroline as well. They used to let me open. I got to open for so many people. I got to Caroline's first. And they would let me open for the weekend with take Gregory or Gilbert Godfrey or Jim Jefferies. Great kind of legendary stand ups that I only saw in television and getting to work with was a huge motivation, you know? That was a fun time to the 2000s for comedy because you see it in the movies too where I was watching the hangover. I was finding a Boston for one of the Celtic games. And I was JetBlue and they have the TV, so but they don't have the real movie channels. They just have like the TV movie channels. And bravo. And it was just completely mutilated. It was like a butylated corpse. They are cut and jokes left and right. They're pretty good stuff. And it was like 40% of what the movie was, which the whole point of that movie was to cross some lines. In that era, it feels like it's gone now. Well, yeah, it seems like I don't know. I think, I don't think it's the artist though..

"And we went through the, I know you are, but what am I seeing? And thanks for coming in. And that was that. You know, I think by the time I fought my way through traffic, someone had left something on my answering machine, you know, called me and they had offered me the wrong. Jesus. Oh my God. But I didn't know. I didn't know who these people were. I didn't know what it would become. I didn't know that this was going to be the formula. For a comedy in that time period. That in my humble opinion is only matched by like naked gun. Yeah. It's not dated. It's funny. Every time I watch it, and I'm very proud. To be associated with it and Paul, because it was, you know, especially after I, we thought we're talking earlier about being accepting. The gift and doing something with it. That made it even sweeter, or it continues as a gift that just keeps on giving. And Mark, that's got to be exhausting. I heard you talk about Paul as far as the talk show into Paul Rubens for those listening. You know, he's very much like Andy Kaufman or the late Gilbert Godfrey, Andy Kaufman as well. Whereas, you know, he's got to be in this character. That's got to be exhausting after a while. Like he kind of carried it with him on many talk shows, right? That's got to be something tough to put on a persona in your life than take it off behind the scene. I mean, I feel like that's difficult. That can be difficult market. Am I looking at that correctly? Well, this is a character that he developed on stage. And he came up with these wonderful ideas and that character was fully developed. So he could step in and out of it whenever he wanted to. Okay. And Paul is very businesslike and detailed oriented. Sure. So he is very easy just, you know, in the snap of a finger to go from one role to the next. Between takes, you know, the man's a total professional. He was back then before he exploded. On the planet, so I don't know how exhausting it was for him. Shooting the movie, I don't know, you know, if he's put in other situations like, you know, signing autographs with whatever. I mean, he can't stay in character. He can do an in costume. The photo op, but the rest of the time I understand he spends a great deal of time with people and listens and talks and the people a couple hours back in line are going, come on. Come on. Yeah..

Which is the daughter and you note and you note the size of his forearm so in this virtues as marine on the dvd a. He's literally has popeye. Like arm Yes what do you like about this immature well because you you could feel it. I you picture what it would be like if popeye fist fucked you after having this spinach and you hear that and then you hear the ship whistle that comes out of his pipe and then him fish talking you in the ass. That would be really Really intense around this point. You say if you're not keeping up. I'll start from the beginning if you make. It doesn't make sense. What you do you do the hafner a what do you like about checking like that. Yeah because it's like the idea that it's it's a story that must be filo like oh wait a second. The daughter blows the dog. Oh i didn't hear that that's why it made no sense then a beat that. I've seen you do a few times with this. Is you stop and be like i know. You're probably wondering why didn't they agent call the cops yech. That's a different story it is. It's one of those things when you listen to setups jokes or things and you go. You know this this really could have been solved on the way. Yeah do you have a sense of when it's time to say things like that it's like oh the audience like what are you monitoring for what the how the audience is reacting. No no that take. I don't think about adult. So i'm just stuff like that pops into my head. The son gets jumper cables. Then then around this point you say it sounds like one of the prayers from the jewish holidays. I remember i remember in one version of the aristocrats. I said either that night or one. I did a second version for the documentary. I just ad-lib also just on that popped into my head. This is a A favorite Practice in a family of character actor. Kevin mccarthy and and now kevin mccarthy was in you know invasion of the body snatching. He's one of those. If you saw him you know media. And he spoke like that goal of time and like run run jar attacking. I was talking to this actor or tower. An interviewer who knew kevin mccarthy he was like a hundred and at the time and he said. Are you familiar with this comedian. Gilbert godfrey he. I think he was vaguely and he said well. I gilbert tells us joke great talks about you know daughter fucking her brother and the dog fucking mother and blah blah blah blah blah. And he goes. And this is a favourite practice at the household of character. Actor kevin mccarthy and kevin mccarthy says offensive and someone said well you know gilbert takes things overboard and he goes. "Clinton wonder jokes and then this how and more importantly why they told it this week. We're running two thousand nineteen interview with gilbert godfrey. What people are out here. Having their hot girl summers is. I spent all summer talking to comedians about september eleventh It was four piece coming out on vulture next week to mark the twentieth anniversary while there was tons of art that reacted to nine eleven. There's something different about the nature of being a stand up comedian. They are on the ground immediately. Afterwards you know the job of a comedian. It's not unlike boots. On the ground pollster. They were able to read what the temperature of the country was at that time so talking to them really paint a very distinct picture of those few months after the attack and that story would be incomplete without the now legendary tale of gilbert at the fire scupper host of hugh hefner telling a joke. That went so poorly. His only response was to tell the aristocrats for those unfamiliar with gilbert's career. Who have not seen the incredible documentary about him. Gilbert there are few things. I feel like you should know i if you're a millennial Gave her take. You probably best no in from the rose or playing allowed guy or allow parrot in your childhood. If you're younger maybe know him from those things or or voicing the aflac duck or some other loud cartoon but maybe just know him from periodically getting in trouble for saying hacky offensive shit right after a tragedy that the happiness the tendency to tell old school like joke book jokes. It's it's hard to really understand if you don't really entire career. But the only way i can bear to is like a secret agent in a movie who is into deep like he doesn't remember who gilbert was before he started doing these types of things but like ultimately what i'd say he's much closer to andy kaufman and i think people who weren't following him closely probably realized he. He is driven by getting a genuine audience reaction regardless if it's positive or negative he is in my opinion avangard and the two soon thing you'll hear talk about it. It's a compulsion. He's sort of half do it and believes someone's got to. I think you know. I mean you'll say you. Can you can judge for yourself. Lastly in in the case that you have in watch the two thousand five documentary the aristocrats. The aristocrats is less a joke. More a joke form so it. Basically family goes into the italian agent. The talent agent asked what their act is. The family does some wild stuff. And when it's over the agent goes and what do you call yourselves. And the father goes the aristocrats the game for comedians backstage agent green rooms or late night at parties. It's a see how far they can go with describing the act the version. You're about to hear some good was two thousand five album slash. Dvd dirty jokes and it really is a dirty joke. Like it's not just dirty it is it is gross. It is grotesque. it really is. Do you need to know that. The idea of a joke like the aristocrats or or or say arrose joke is to context. That says we all know this is quote unquote offensive because we all know that it conceptually should become less. So does it again. That's up to you but you have been warned so here is gilbert offered. Well i got one more quick wadden. Do end the sweat. A talent agent is.

"Why else would you be so terrified and running around like you know wanting to leave town pregnant all these fucking other rabbit. This is what he can't child support. That's that's why he's in prison at the beginning. Gotta keep them away from fucking all these cats prison. I've been there and he talked dante. Look i tried as best i can. But you got to cut it off seating. Cut it off. So he gets arrested like the the the big thing is revealed and he gets arrested and now he's in jail now. He's in jail. Meanwhile humpty dumpty is kind of like the hero of the town because he's like. Hey everybody we got this golden goose that we stole everybody's getting golden eggs now and you got an old goal inelegant you got a golden egg. You know if this movie is at its best ever is. It's a at the part when The reveals that he was always there like it's funny. Funniest joke where it's like the cat scene. He was in this scene. And like it's funny self-aware thing but that move the movie wants to do action. Scenes wants to do joe best thing which that problem. You're totally right. Because that the movie is at its best. Whichever is never know. Never never achieves anything. But what you're saying here. I totally agree with because that is a shrub show yes that is a shrek style. Joan and this movie really doesn't have a lot of those in favor of like you're saying all these actions n. a. twenty to twenty five minute flashbacks. Yes so he's in jail and this is this is a real. I got kids here. This whole yeah. He's in the fucking prison and for whatever reason. This is is gonna fucking lakers dick. Then here's his old man's watching him and he's old minutes chained to a wall and he's like don't mind me. Keep doing what you're doing. I like to watch. that's right. Yeah this old man's gonna find him beat off fantasy world again essentially. I'm at work. This is the creepiest part. Yes he reveals that. He is a humpty dumpty ex cellmate. Yes so yeah you do. The math raver. Oh jack from jack and oh yeah get me started. L. let's get it. Started his jagged letter. Spit in the hands to get are going to track that. He fucked an egg. You know what goes well with a magic beings. Inner side played a chair. I'm hungry for eggs but not that way coach. Good with that a banger. English might sex true. Oh my god. That's what he said what he put it in here about to get poached english breakfast. Beans will slice of tomato. We were in london man couple years ago. I had that english breakfast not too shabby i was enjoying myself was a nice change of pace from the american cornflakes english breakfast. If you have a day of adventure planned little little tough to go barnstorm and out into the countryside breakfast afternoon plan. You have the english breakfast. You go back to the hotel you wait it out. Wait that storm out. You have some dumpty planned three. Pm that you can go out to the museum working for an hour four pm. It's easy to dump d on an english breakfast but humpty right now. The english breakfast is at least like there's something nutritious about it whereas like you go to ihop and you get the milkshake fucking pancakes or whatever. The fuck they have this week. Do those things will put you out for two days out. These are the jack and jill people. Yeah exactly jacket jill. People are eating. And i hop Or in denny's yes so this dude he's like by the way. My name's andy bean stark. My friends call me. Jack and i was like completely useless. dialogue there. Let's move right on. It's also weird because he looks like rumpelstiltskin. That's what i thought was going to happen too stupid. But so he says you know. I've been trying to tell his egg motherfucker if you take the golden goose out of the giants house then the fucking the big things going to come after it. The big thing is it's the mother of the goal is but i don't think the tischler mother goose because as far as i remember that was a lady. Yeah mother goose address on or something. This this goose's naked fifty feet tall and we see like in beta town. It's a photo realistic. Like alec cartoon duck. He does ask. Do you like that guy. I gotta tell you pretty big fan of that affect dukla off the aflac duck these days. Klay fire gilbert right gilbert godfrey talk and fire gilbert friend of the show fan of the show we did. We did a podcast with him. He could find it online somewhere. But like steve. That was a missed opportunity. Gush tune in love for the aflac dyke should have. We were in his chelsea apartment and he didn't bring it up. It was rude of me. We were too busy looking at fucking lon. Chaney's death mask or whatever. He had gone onto the pad. Cool dude gilbert. It was awesome. What a great time a dilbert. But i gilbert and they'll get that fucking shit you can fire my dad's from the geico commercial. Guess sort of like that gecko man. Do you like the new ads with nick. Nolte doing it. Why gilbert godfrey junk. Nope no kick. Just tell me. Awesome fucking insurance. How cool would that be so excited. Know what's the other one that i'm trying to think of fuck. There's something out there some of these insurance motherfuckers. There's a ostrich mutual another digression that half already audience can understand because this is this is yank dark sure. Welcome back to young talk because they don't have these commercials. I don't what a liberty mutual options half band half golden one insurance company. Can we convince that. Only that would only work in england where it looks like the guy who's leading them current. Yeah dude. yeah actually. Boris johnson looks like somebody. farka golden. Definitely some deformed wings under that shirt. Johnson definitely got birth that of an egg. I won't hear different short. You and i heard the other day. Boris johnson you hear this folks here. Worst johnson board of the united states of america. Benjamin yes oh right way. Or here's philadelphia. Sorry flip flip adele. So he's oh. I have to saved down and then kitty saws. Breaks them out. Yeah and like. There's there's still fucking cat flirting to definitely still their cat flirt up and down this movie. Sure and then the big fucking monster shows up. And it's a big chase scene. And i need to see this thing a little bit. Like the state puff marshmallow amanda steps on a church in my town. Like i need a little bit of destruction. You this thing. Just kind of like curiously walks around. It's sort of almost does kill the the epilogue which will talk about pisses me off. Kills jack agila pretty immediately like they're like. Hey we want the money back or something like that. They could just totally smashed and left for dead. And you're fucking dead. Yeah probably some their pigs to. It's it definitely. it is so. It's just one of the many things in this movie. That's like so aggravating. Because it's like what a missed opportunity. You have a giant goose that is ready to destroy a town and they don't they. Don't have fun with it totally. Why isn't it like honking at a building in the building like all the windows shatter could just spit ball. Dozen things right now. That would be so much funnier than what happened. Actually because it's not about being funny. It's about action. Movement says such a fucking day that technical animation. What's good about is the movement of it. That's what's clear about it. So they're showing in that regard and like god damn it it pains me to fuck praise this movie but in the second shrek movie what actions have peace at the end of it is around like the big gingerbread man mongo or whatever they call it and like it's coming in it's being a little destructive wild or whatever like but it's still a funny and they're kind of doing things with it and this is just like it is literally just kind of walking through this town like hey. Is anybody seeing that golden goose. I am looking for my child. Being as calm about this felt like you think the way that they hype this up in talking about it. It's going to be some crazy mom star. That comes through. Rippin ask you. It's gotta be cute because it's for kids just like the gingerbread man is always 'cause i'm baby this movie so where you not only did you wanna gopher grimly thing. Monster arrow migrate golden man wing. It always comes back to this book like when you the only hint you get this monster when they're up in the giants house as you see it's eyeball and it's like this big like lord of the rings fucking i am sore on looking like read a glowing eyeball and then when it's revealed that it's just this big goose. None of that exists. Yeah now so it's like a complete faker. Yeah it's total fake. Well yeah it'd be like. Hey we got we got here fucking sixty five minutes of footage before we got fifteen minutes before it can hit the ending. And that's gonna end three times anyway..

It was weird. I listen to you on gilbert godfrey podcast right here and and he opens up the show by telling a story of you and him having sex with the same woman in an alley. Did you remember that story when you agreed to do the colossal podcast or was it just like he dropped it on. You know it Both really but here's the thing on that whether he had an me or anything like that. So what there is not a story that you have heard. There's not an arrest you can find. There's a sexual as on that you mentioned going to hurt my feelings damage my reputation. I've one of the world all time. Worst reputations. I don't know how i keep a job but no. I certainly didn't tell me about that. But it's one of my fondest stories. I tell it all the time. It's hysterical hysterical. I'll tell you something about gilbert godfrey because he was one of the early podcast that i did. That guy was so informed. I couldn't believe like. I've known gilbert god. That's a pretty intimate thing to only a torso away from another guy so gilbert. I know each other a pretty well. I was shocked how much time he had put into research to do. A podcast with news. Pretty impressive awesome. It was awesome. Why do you think howard gilbert on anymore I stink as where when you say. What was the last time you gilbert was on. I have no idea. i haven't heard him on in years. Okay then. I don't know i would say a falling out but howard doesn't have some of the main guests and hang on that he used to. I would have had some some kind of an. He is shocking appalled by his own behavior on his own radio. Show talking to his own friends and embarrassing them and making them squirm He's years and years and years of he's come to the point that he wants to be the real howard stern and maybe we're godfrey did not fit into that. Were so funny together. I have another question about your recovery. Like they talk about a psychic change right from when you're fucking totally out there in the in the mass having a nice life. Do you feel like you had the psychic changed. You feel like people discount your psychic change because antabuse pay played a part of your story No i don't i don't know if that's the case. Sometimes i think it. But i think and then think. Don't go off this drug ever no matter what what people you no matter what you feel no appeal your sobriety cheapened and you should make it better by doing just on your own. Don't do it. i'm so that's what counts that the only thing that counts. And you know there are some people that You know there are people in recovery. That don't take pain meds after the dentist right. That's crazy right right. no i hear you. I'm not like that either. I i used to take a nyquil. Every time i couldn't sleep which might not have been the right thing to do but some people were shocked and appalled. People who get really sick will never take it. You know right now. I do know. And that's what is it. Twenty five proof or twenty five percent. Whatever it is. There's a boatload of alcohol in nyquil as well as other drugs it can give you a little bit of amnesia. The next day like what happened. When did i take that So i you know what i say. Whatever medicine makes you better in the sense of cures the common cold. Take it If you go to the dentist nations here take these painkillers. Although my dentist actually no matter how much pain. I'm going to be in an extensive. Dental work. Says tylenol tylenol three. That's what you get that will do and it does you know and anytime i want to go begging around joe drugs. 'cause i'm allegedly and paying. I've stopped my tylenol three now. I just want drugs and luckily it took a while but i don't ask doctors and dentists for You know like it anymore. When's the last time you wanted to use Do you mean anything including alcohol hour ago. Is it really like that. It's kinda like that too bad but I was far out in the boondocks over the state of washington. And i had to come back and i came back in the past really nice places. Drink like dive bars big fan. Gimme an applebees. Gimme a red robin and my heart racist so yeah literally an hour ago all right. Do you still do meetings or no no i. I don't 'cause i don't like him. I do like them. They become too long with permissions. It's now time for the first time for the seven and just a lot of people talking about things. That aren't drinking right right right right right. I hear you danny. I cannot thank you enough for this time. You've been incredibly generous. And it's and i and i i'm happy to hear your sober like i didn't. I didn't know you know what i'm saying like it's hard to to find that out because like i think you told the story on On one of those shows about hulk hogan and he said he asked you if you were sober and then he handed you a bucket of vicodin. And i couldn't tell i couldn't tell that story if you were sober now so i was like we'll see what happens with this thing. Well i gotta tell ya. Okay is a good friend of mine and we met doing promos for different reality shows. I had this disaster breaking each any ad. Hogan knows best or whatever it was and we're doing the thing and the joke is it's we're playing the theme from the couple. If you remember in the i couple Won an oscar those cigarette or cigar down the four. And the other guy. tony randall. Picks it up with an umbrella what we did there. And i flicked cigar out of my mouth and hulk goes to take this giant beach umbrella out of a table at a restaurant and it doesn't come fix so he picks up the whole cable and does the that was awesome. So i'm talking to him and he goes Are you sober now. And i was as a matter of fact at the time but it didn't it didn't he. Goes how about pills. Vans me a bunch of biking. And which i immediately took. And they're not as fun as they used to be but yeah. That's that's a very true story. And hulk is up those pills. And i am up those bills. Well good for you man and then the most fucked up story. I can't resist making you tell this one more..
"gilbert godfrey" Discussed on Blogging the Boys
"So obviously Yeah as as brett departs us. Because he's got to do another show As you know as we progress in training camp and there's a guy like dak prescott now. Is this the one that you're kind of just like circling saying all right. There's no pressure on him as far as like physical pressure. But it's nice bro. It's very nice to see him back there. Rather than andy dalton or or who who. I think gilbert godfrey is gonna be the backup quarterback. It seems like it seems like it's it's a it's a race between him and cooper rush and when i say gilbert free. Everybody knows i'm talking about you. Know gilbert but Obviously how do you feel about seeing dak prescott out there slinging. Do i think i love it. I mean it's awesome but bat is one of the. My positives is gilbert godfrey gear. Gilbert ha is the fact that i said he's played one game right literally one game against pittsburgh and it was. It was a decent game. We almost won that game. Pittsburgh was undefeated last season and it seems that he is making some really really nice. Plays in camp. You know what i mean. So he's a positive for me. Is i was very you know if he listened to previous podcast finicky about our our backup quarterback situation. I've been begging them to bring somebody in you know because just in case we dak needs breasts or something happens for a couple of games. We need to win games. And maybe you know maybe this is what this is gilbert's colin man. I met you know. Take some you look at. You look at certain quarterbacks right that it takes them a while to learn they can't just jump right in right. What i'm saying. Total great examples. Kurt warner on yeah totally. You know what i'm saying. Cows bagging groceries before bagging groceries before he was wanting walls. Yeah yeah exactly. I met people even like someone like rich. Gannon you look at some of these quarterbacks were takes so maybe he's finally getting it and he got his shot I looked it up and he's dry. He was drafted in two thousand fourteen. Right yeah so he's been around for seven years already and he was the last quarterback taken in that draft which was interesting. I so yeah. But you know he he was he. He dressed for games but he never started until the dallas cowboy game and he left him play another league as well so but him making these kind of plays and having the confidence he has. You know i meant. Hey you know that's that's and that's the thing. Nobody saw him in a game right. The only film may have on him as is the pittsburgh game is a picture game but my thing is like like maybe. There's you know there are certain players that have that game mentality when they get in you know they just stay show out right like they say peyton. Manning threw one of the ugliest bald. You've ever seen you know. But you couldn't tell when he's in a gang man at all. He's one of the best ever doing exactly. So i don't know but anyway. So he's one of my positives Gear gilbert for sure. Yeah the backup. Quarterback position was one of those ones where i was very Very nervous about not addressing. But it seems like they have enough decent players Behind back press. Got to kind of ease that anxiety of if if god forbid something happens the deck again you know we can maybe win a couple of games without him Obviously we don't want that but you know again. You want a decent quarterback and when you say bring somebody in you also have to take in consideration. Maybe there is nobody out there left. You know what i'm saying. Maybe the last one. I can think of right and the only reason i liked him because he could run right. He's a he can move around. You know what i mean so they were. You know he kinda run attack all fence. It's the only one. I was thinking what he went to texas where we went. But you know that person. But one person that i'm laughing at i'm not laughing at and i'm rooting for them. Room for every player by the way but dench denote shamu jar boy. Our cousins our cousin panucci. Apparently he you know. He had a great two miniature. But i'm reading like this is the thing like when you're talking about no contact. It's like oh. He had a great run for thirty. It's like come on. Yeah he would've popped the ball. It's not fair to run against. Especially if you're a quarterback didn't hit quarterbacks in camp there actually and the right and the cowboys finally switched it over with the mike mike mccarthy era they put red jerseys on red means stop. Do not do not so now. You definitely know. He's a quarterback to not lay the wood. But i'm at cooper getting injured is going to hurt him. I mean yeah. I mean and now the three quarterbacks might be going in it will be. I think i think right now. It looks as if gilbert's backing up and the neutral get either third or or practice squad. Yeah we'll see. We'll remains to be seen. How many quarterbacks they take in. But i do know for a fact that and it's funny that we should mention the pittsburgh game gilbert's gonna get a nice little chunk action in that first game against pittsburgh that that's interesting and it's going to be interesting to kinda weed out to see who's who Look it's very early in camp. Were one week deep. But we're the only team in camp right now along with the pittsburgh steelers. And by the way i'm i'm adam schefter saying that Ben roethlisberger came in lean and mean when big old donut tire than he's ever has. I'm a. I'm a good friend of mine and she sends me. She sent me that with the steelers. She goes look the nfl's in trouble or something look like he looks at this beards gone. Nothing's changed me. That makes them look thinner. You maybe maybe it does that does wonders for me. That's for sure. I will say is so the cowboys obviously again. One week in To training camp we've mentioned a bunch of winners or pros and cons From it you know dating back we'll recap the the the cons tristan hill. Francis bernard any kind of injured cowboys right. Now you're you're you're spots grabs. If you're a bubble guy you gotta be careful The dancing we don't like that but again we attribute that to possibly hard knocks of guys kind of showing off for the camera and stuff like that and you know it's funny. I just started yesterday on the treadmill at the gym. i started. there's a. There's a some kind of youtube channel. I don't remember the name of it. But they have in crystal-clear like perfect hd the two thousand eight a hard knock season. So i started watching it just as just for you know but yeah i'm done with episode one. I can't believe how stack that team was. And we didn't perform like i forgot. I forgot tank. Johnson was on that team. I know remember brought up the point where he says a. I've never seen so much talent before and a team. He says that. One of the episodes i remember. Yeah man. it's it's ninety over. It's unbelievable but i know and and you know once again that is the that's the season we started out three. No finish nine and seven. How mr player. I do now. I wanted to bunk the playoffs in era because of the rams the did it last year there on hard knocks. They made the playoffs. So let's let's stop with the whole like curse the knox whatever i heard your other podcast. I other guys talking. And by the way i'm glad fixes mike but He has so look. The cowboys are headed full steam into week. Two of training camp The jersey boys obviously have followed along with blogging. The boys coverage. They're doing a phenomenal job out there. Some of the beat writers are actually out there reporting some videos So be sure to follow those guys But as far as training camp goes man as long as we stay healthy. We'll figure out if they you know what they do it melik hooker if if they bring him in But yeah. I mean look. There's not a lot going on We don't have to drag this on too long today. We'll hold on. We got to want to talk about one more player. Oh go ahead. What's up dude Who i who. I was hard on and we made fun of earlier. Is rainy gregory blown up dude. I've been trying to tell people this until i'm blue in the face. That having him go ahead and he knows dave helming came. And there's another guy tweeting like he's like you need to get number ninety four out of their out of their mike like off the field..

I would laugh hysterically. i would laugh hysterically. It'd be like. I just lost her job from tomsk era. Still a great day. Maybe maybe we should start that app. Maybe we should start an app where people could hire celebrities to fire their employees. So it's not so bad dad. That's not a bad idea. It's funny and then it takes a liability causes are but it off the business and dude tops girl would fuck it. Roast me while firing. Here's the thing. But i would love it so much in and doing the stand up comedy thing and and diving into stand up comedy. I've learned more more about other comedians. So there's like certain comedians. I wouldn't want to do to fire me because it's almost like an analyst like i know them personally but it's like i know just from like where they stand on certain things and like how they are with people and things like that would make them like feel bad means are so like i feel like thomson girl wouldn't care no. Tom probably wouldn't care. I feel i feel like bert. Kreischer would probably feel bad. Yeah i i know for. I know for a fact bobby lee would woodfuel at. Yeah andrew santino. Probably not so much. I suppose it's like i don't know what you're referring to. Of course there literally saving those companies. But i would think it's a little more hesitant to rip greg on this show. Yeah.

That's what it's about a sat down started to write with with todd. My school writer and a lot of stuff came out. I was surprised once. I got on a rule thought i had other in particular. There's a passage in the book where you're talking about the importance of of younger generation sitting and listening to the stories of older generations. That's right then they don't know it's it's it's one of the reasons that gilbert and i put this show together is to hear those stories. They don't venerate anymore. The who has a song. I hope i die before i get old. Yeah that's it. It's so bad. Because i try to tell them. It's a great time of life. I'm having best time ever a beautiful young life. I say every day. I'm on podcast. Yes you got. You got to harmonize with gilbert godfrey a rare privilege. Thanks thanks for sharing your story. We're we're very grateful. Are there any quick tips. You can give us getting older gracefully. Don't ever start going down the stairs. Sideways people favored their knees. That starts the back. And that's when everything starts to go they don't go down the stairs sideways. I see even if it hurts a little. Go down the stairs front ways. I mean that's real advice you'll you'll find out this. Does dick have one more. Soggy them to take us out. You were singing a song right before we were recording. Oh no you were seeing actually of old things a billy joel song. All we were sitting in new york state of mind. Oh yeah i. I don't know i just be but i think it's a heck of a song you just did for your birthday party with the flash mob. What what what what do they do. We do super califat. You initially didn't. We know you did go. You also did go. Fly a kite. Oh where tuppence for paper and string. You can have your own set of wings with your feet on the ground your robert in flight with your fist holding tight to the the to the swing of your kite too high. Oh let's go fly a kite up to the highest height. Let's go fly kites and send it soaring. Why am i doing this on my own range. And this is ridiculous task you and you could tell me to go at myself. "Gilbert godfrey. This is gilbert godfrey amazing colossal podcast and dime not here by connected by skype with my co host. Frank santo padre where thrilled when. We're lucky enough to book. A guest who was on our regional want list. This is true and this week's guest was at the top of that list. He's celebrated actor comedian writer. Singer dancer and a bona fide show biz legend who has appeared in popular films. Such as bye bye birdie cold turkey chidi chidi bang bang night at the museum and of course mary poppins for five seasons. He starred in one of the most admired and influential television. Joe's in history that dick van dyke show and then years later diagnosis murder. He's the recipient of five emmys. A tony award a grammy and screen actors guild life achievement award. He's also a member of the television hall of fame and his been recognized as a disney legend. I'm so excited to be with here. I may pee on myself please. Welcome dick van. Dyke impressed with what a resume. Now now i had some stuff prepared to ask you but then we started. We got into a conversation and you are friends with the actor and comedian. Orson bean yes. Now please please or you want for and i go back to the fifties when both of us were hanging around new york kind of out of work and we would go to the modern museum and down the basement. They ran silent films and we go to central park. Will we go to the central park zoo every day. Though as a chimp in there who had to weigh one hundred and fifty pounds a big old gray cham- who laid on a on a kind of a book up there smoking a big black cigar and masturbated. I mean he would have you had an audience he would do. I kind of envy them. We must have passed it on that. Jim but wasn't remember. We will every day every day with us being. Yeah just. I can't imagine anything. I'd rather walk every day brought. Here's my i. Couldn't i work with a champion of movie. Who was about the same size of very talented guy. Dinky so i'm champs that was the the robin crusoe movie dick. That's right. dinky was his name. He was weighed about one hundred and thirty pounds ten years old and remember like ten things in a row in a scene. He would remember everything he could play cards and if he went up and forgot his lines. You saw going. Who and p p. His pants dedicate actually so basically had more talented. Now you use told the story in your book keep moving. Yeah that years ago. I guess you doing chitty chitty bang bang. Maybe you hurt yourself emotionally. Yeah and then you went to a doctor and he gave you this horrible. that's right. He looked at my xrays. He said you know that you riddled with arthritis from head to foot. I didn't know it. i was forty. What was i forty two or three so. Apparently i had been all those years. But i didn't know it and that's what got me moving and i've still riddled with deb. The thing is i keep moving and keep stretching and tonight and i heard a you said in the doctor's office because you a hit with this shocking horrible. He said you're in five or seven years. You'll be at least on a walker if not wheelchair five or seven years and you said you got up and danced in his office you. That was fifty years ago. And i'm still dancing. Oh wow have to take you down. Yeah 'cause i mean all over the internet there is like this footage of you like tensing and clothing stores my my wife dot grab sears and roebuck ralph. Smart wherever they're playing. It looks like it's special effects the way you dance now. How how did you start out in show business. I was doing what they call karaoke here. Now we were a record act. There were all over los angeles. Nineteen forty seven. My buddy and i drove out here. And there's no chevy had a boxer seventy eight records and we played clubs all over town. Was this the mary the the merry mutes. Yeah mary that was what her name. Yeah yeah we. We had quite a following around town. It was a very popular thing to jerry lewis started. Oh yeah jerry pantomime. Yeah and that's how i got show. It was going to be a like we were going to go home and do something serious but one thing led to another. I never got into the business. Thank god and then you've got further into show business after you were in the army. Yeah a kind of cowardice is if i was in pilot training and the war was almost over so they've just cancelled the pilot training program and the hold us. All in some of you will be overseas as tail gunners on twenty five the rest of you will be assigned according to your abilities and i went right into don singing dance and i got special services saved my life go ahead. Oh no you never were. Ever had formal training know nothing. I tell kids. I was in my thirties before. I got a job singing and dancing and my god. I loved it. If i'd had any sense then i would have well. I better study dancing and takes him. I didn't do anything. I just did it for the fun of it and i never worked on it. That's not a good way to do it. Although i watching you sing and dance like an untrained singer and dancer it's kind of like like jimmy durante. Jimmy durante by no means is a great singer. But you love listening to. That's right. yeah and you're like one of those people like you know maybe there are better dancers and singers. But when you watch you you know it's it's a guy having a great time it looks esi. That's the secret. If i'm having fun if fairly entertaining if i'm not i stink if i if i don't think it's funny. I can't make it funny if it's not funny. But yeah you're dancing was always like contagious. You know. it just looks like fun. I was i was a ray bolger. Regal always wanted to be that that guy that scarecrow. Oh yeah that affect my very young wife was what would you have liked it. I like to be scarecrow in the wizard about she said. Did you try out for it..
Meet Gilbert Gottfried's sidekick Frank Santopadre
"I have Frank Santa Padre. He is the co host of Gilbert, Godfrey's, amazing colossal podcast. This happens to be my favorite podcast aside from talking tech. Of course, a great place to get a lot of laps in stories about old Hollywood. And Frank one thing that I find really fascinating about your show. Is it sounds like you're interviewing people person to person, but many times, you're not correct? Or you're talking about the long distance broke up. How do you do that? What we do is. Well, we we originally we were doing Skype interviews, you know, when you're doing a show about old Hollywood a lot of people, especially retired people where where people in their sixties seventies and eighties live in Los Angeles. And we do the show out of New York. So that necessitated long distance and actions, we started doing them but phone calls, we realized that down very good. So we moved to Skype, but then the Skype audio would let you down because you would dependent on on the bandwidth, and and all kinds of other factors. So we decided to record people on the west coast. And then record our end, obviously on the east coast. And then our engineer mixes the two so really you get a seamless result. It sounds like we're in same room. So how do you do this does the person go to a studio and then you're negative air? They go to air will studios are our parent company partner, our partner, if you're wolf has a a studio in Hollywood. So they'll go there. And there's an engineer there. To record them. Sometimes we go to someone's home. If they're not in LA, we we recorded Robert Wagner last night. And he's an Aspen. So we dispatched an engineer to him at his house. And then they send us the audio files and our engineer Frank mixes the to file until it sounds like we're all together. How do you hear them? Over Skype hookup. Okay. Yeah. There's there's a there's a a camera. So we can see them which makes the interview better obviously, cover the other drawback to phone interviews is there's no I contact or anything you can't pick up social cues. You don't know when to speak when they're speaking. So we see them on a computer screen, and and and we hear them through through the Skype connection. We just don't use that Skype connection for for Finnish audio now when you came up with this concept, you are working with one of the great tech enthusiasts of all time. Gilbert, Godfrey, correct. Oh, there's nobody more technically proficient than Gilbert. And that of course, we're both being facetious. He is very anti tech. Now did he know what you're talking about? Did was it a tough sell mean? Tell me about this. You mean when when when we propose the idea of a podcast, so well, the podcast, and then the idea that you would use Skype to interview people. I I'm pretty sure Jeff that. After two hundred fifty maybe close to four hundred now if you count the Thursday, many episodes, I'm pretty sure he still has no idea. What a podcast is. Confident in that assessment. Yeah. He you know last night we were doing sound checks for five minutes. And the engineer couldn't understand why he couldn't hear Gilbert's voice. And then we realize he never plugged headphone, Jack he doesn't even have to use his cell phone. Tell everybody about the show. How's it doing the shows doing? Well. I mean, we never expected quite honestly this kind of response when we started. It was a large. Yes. It was started really as a labor of love and goof, I mean Gilbert, and I have known each other many years we used to sit on the phone till all hours, laughing about obscure character actors and just kind of arcane stuff that don't we thought only we cared about. When when we had the idea to actually interview some of our heroes. We thought oh, this'll be fun cult thing for a couple of hundred people, and our fellow the we didn't really know it would take off and that seventy five thousand eight thousand people a week would would download it were pleasantly surprised by the reaction and two hundred and fifty shows in. We've made a little name personnel to now. People want to do the show tell everybody about you. Because obviously Gilbert Gottfried has quite a career and from Aladdin to the comedy clubs to problem child. And all the things you guys talk about on the show, but Frank a writer tell everybody about yourself. Well, I've been a comedy writer for God about twenty five years professionally, and I've written everything I wrote for the Muppets I wrote cyber couple of screenplays that were optioned I written a lot of ward shows, I write for the comedy, central gross. I wrote the TV land awards they don't do anymore. Am I ran I wrote for I sort of made my bones writing for other comics and writing for people like Bill Murray, and oh, God all kinds of people joy Behar different people like that. And. And that kind of into into a career writing off show stuff panel what they call panel, which is celebrity talk show. I worked for the Howard Stern show for a while. So I'm kind of a joke writer, you know, writer of of one liner short form comedy award shows

Review: 'The Spy Who Dumped Me'
"Hasn't he thinks a also does ticker, right? Yeah, he has a wonderful, wonderful. Originally Gilbert, Godfrey was supposed to. Busy being. I found it very moving, and surprisingly touching said in the back row weeping for my lost childhood, bring all the things that are no longer available to me, I think is a great family flick. So that's good. I saw the Middleburg film festival had a screening of puzzles. Stowing Kelly MacDonald, right? Yes. And she arrived in town and first of all, I would like to say she's very open about this. She's forty two years old and she looks like she's twenty five, and that's why she is a movie star because I won't tell you how old I am, but I look about thirty years older than that. And it's a nice little. Movie of a of a downtrodden housewife who finds her Mojo doing jigsaw puzzles that she finds a partner and, and you know, it's, it's not exciting. It's not. It's not loud or anything, but it's a nice. It's a, it's a nice coming of age film and don't just Google jigsaw accidentally. Cassava, Papa torture porn totally different than what you. Yes, she is a lovely actress in. We're talking about this the other day. I think it was off Mike, but just some of the things that she's been. She was first in Trainspotting as a child. Essentially, he was the baby on the ceiling. Boardwalk empire. She was in no country for old men. And that's to me because I know she Scottish and beautiful doing the boardwalk empire thing was very hard because she was Irish desires, but the southern Tekere western Texas accent. She had. She might as well been born in Odessa. Here's your own lady bird. How do they do? I don't know. So I'm a big fan and it's it's a lovely movie, and I saw the spy who dumped me the other night because somebody needed to go to that. Kunas and Kate McKinnon, and it's not very good would expect. And Kate McKinnon is squandering her talent. And so I am worried about she is Uber, talented, death, but even I think we all agree and you should never judge a movie on the trailer, and then we saw the trailer. It was like, oh, no, really? And so that you're telling me that my fears are confirmed. They play it like a Saturday Night Live sketch except it's two hours law to our. I wrote this down. It's one hundred sixteen minutes when she's Larry on SNL. I wonder why. I mean, what is it that you Ghostbusters. Needs to develop her own material or work with people who know her to develop stuff for her. That really doesn't have to just take any script. Melissa McCarthy will write her own. Sometimes it's hit or miss, but sometimes hilarious. Even Melissa McCarthy, I was thinking Melissa McCarthy because she needs a new breakout something to get her to the next. She's doing the same thing over and over. Again. It seems to me and Mila Kunis was hilarious. And Ted ten thought was Jerry, so they both can do it, but not this time not time. So here's a reminder and Hornets when she's in town reviews at Washington Post dot com. And I'm arch.
