I mean, it was a lot of paperwork and he went to Libya during the Arab spring to try to find the truth of who else had been involved. The people who were the I think, the architect of the bombing. They had been killed. Somebody Qaddafi and others had been killed by the rebels who had toppled Gadhafi. It was a violent regime and they died in a violent way. But I was left again with just this name who My Libyan friend and fixer at the time, looked at the name and said. That's almost a made up name Abul given Massoud. The people who worked with him were dead or gone, and my Libyan fixer said that might not even be a real name. He heard this again and again, Abuela Gila Massoud maybe doesn't exist and then can learn about a Libyan man living in Germany. This man had gone to prison for bombing a German nightclub in 1986. Two American servicemen were killed. Ken asked this man to meet and he said, Okay. So can flew to Germany. And he asked who made the bomb that you used in the nightclub and he went on to name the name of the bomb maker, and it turned out to be a bluegill. Massoud the man can had been chasing was real. But in the chaos after Libya's civil war, it seemed like there never be a way to find him. After all, he'd been a ghost for years. And then in 2000 and 15 more than two years after they met the Libyan man in Germany sent Ken a text. It was a picture of a guy can had seen in an old video. A guy he'd long suspected. Was Abu a Gila Massoud. He was wearing a blue jumpsuit. And I knew that those blue jumpsuits were the type that the former Gadhafi regime members who were on trial in Libya would wear in court. And so we went through. My my filmmaking team went through every stock picture of images taken of the men who were on trial, and we poured through them, and we found more and more images of this same man, and I realized that's him. Massoud is not a ghost. He does exist, and in fact, he's being held in the Libyan prison. And so what do you do? Do you take that information to the FBI? Do you call them up and say guys? Uh, there's a guy was involved in Lockerbie and I've got a picture of him, he said. He's in prison on trial, and Libby. I was in something of a bind because as a filmmaker and the journalist, obviously I was trying to get us much as I could. On the record. I had a different times been questioned, You know by the FBI. They wanted to know if I had anything relevant to their investigation at different points. I did give them information. So they knew what I knew. As of 2014 on, there was really just a waiting game of whether there would be the Ability or the political will perhaps to do anything about it. If this man Abu Gila Massoud is, in fact guilty, that means he is in part responsible for your brother's death. How did you feel hearing Attorney General Bar? Say we have indicted this man, this man that you spent years chasing it, Z, maybe. Understandably, a mixed bag. Of emotions. I mean, as a journalist and filmmaker, I'm I'm always grateful if someone takes your work seriously, and something comes of it, you know, as a brother, that the thing that interests me at this moment is about the business of truth and lies. And that Moammar Qaddafi was the original kind of strong men, and he lied brazenly, and those lies were repeated by his inner circle, and they were repeated by the convicted bomber Almagro he who went to his death. Denying that he played any role in saying he was scapegoated and even some relatives of Lockerbie victims have internalized those lies. And over time, that process is corrosive. I have believed that if you could find certain truths, established certain facts and even filmed them, then You could disarm of the harm and I'm waiting to see what comes of the Justice Department's announcement. My hope is that it puts more facts on the record that air incontrovertible and that it ends any remaining questions and that it silences the lies. You tried very hard to talkto Abdel Basset Almagro he before he died. You did not get a chance. What would you want to ask Abdalla? Gila Massoud, if you had an opportunity to sit down with him what I wanted more than anything was for him to tell me the story. The narrative Really was what? I was looking for the kind of specificity of detail that you couldn't deny. And you couldn't make up And the moment I wanted was the moment when he first heard That his name had come up in connection with Lockerbie. And that 20 years 20. Plus three years of lies and denials about his role had actually come to nothing. And I wanted him to know. That you couldn't lie and deny forever and that someone Would care enough to point out the truth, and I wanted him to know in this case that that was me. Ken Dornstein is a documentary filmmaker. What was said in the Trump-Biden debate last night?
"Let's talk about what went down last night. Akilah quick first impression here. All right. So I was prepared for this debate to be just as annoying as the first one and generally speaking I don't think it was it was quieter and less interrupt. The mute button function was good for the majority of the first answers to the moderator's questions. By the end although senseless non sequiturs started creeping back in also say that the moderator last night Kristen Welker was way better like so far ahead of Chris Wallace several weeks ago you know she kept the candidates on topic she forged ahead with better more relevant questions whenever trump threatened to devolve into conspiracy theories and generally speaking she seemed comfortable being there. So that was the VIBE. But Gideon, let's talk about what trump did last night how would you describe what he had to say? Yeah I definitely agree that it was more toned-down but on the substance I, think trump still acts enlarge part like he's running into. Kept, trying to cast his opponent as a career politician and one who was corrupt he brought up that hunter suffer example, but it didn't quite and it was a little bit hard to follow, and that strategy allows him to evade questions about his own term as well as his vision for the future he failed for instance, offer coherent message on the biggest crisis of his presidency covert nineteen and he at times tried to make the Democratic ticket seem more to the left than it is trump. Seems to always have Bernie Sanders on the brain and several times. He came back to the same point about Biden being a longtime politician who hasn't gotten anything done. But there was at least one specific moment where the strategy failed and he pretty remarkable way by turn to the camera and said, the debate should be about the families of people watching and not what the two candidates were talking about and trump kind of fell into a trap with a terrible answer. Here's a clip of that. This isn't about there's a reason why he's. been up all this Malarkey. There's a reason for he doesn't WanNa talk about the the the substantive issues it's not about his family and my family it's about your family and your family's hurting badly if you're making less than if you're a middle class family, you're getting hurt badly right now you're sitting at the kitchen table this morning to decide what we can't get new tires their ball because we have. To wait another month or so or are we going to be able to pay the mortgage who's going to tell her? She can't go back to to community college there the decision making in the middle class families like I grew up in. Scranton claim they're in trouble we should be talking about your families but that's a last thing he wants to talk about I wanted to say I wanted to tell. Me What is it? Ten seconds Mr President go political stupid. Let's get off this China thing and then he looks the family around the table everything just a typical politician I see that's. Difficult politician. That's why I got elected that. Let's get off the subject of China let's talk around sitting around the table. Right come on Joe you. Okay. So if we're following the logic here, trump is coming off as saying I'm not a typical politician I don't care about your family. Almost. Literally, what he's getting at that moment along with one word trump backed away from raising the federal minimum wage were really out of sync with what's going on in the country among working families. So a Gila, what did you make of trump last night? So I mean personally, I'm not giving US seventy four year old man props for not screaming like an infant during a debate like he's been here long enough he I don't know how to act by now. But in terms of the content of his answers, there wasn't really much worth talking about like. You said trump didn't really WANNA talk about his record at all at one point. He did say that he takes responsibility for covert but then he immediately pivoted to the same old static about how everything is China's fault and other points he blamed. Democratic. Governors and criticized overall continued to downplay the virus saying that schools and businesses should fully reopen but he revealed no plan to deal with the spikes and infections. "Is Welcome to kids myths and Mysteries. I'm your host kid crumb today Mysteries of the Alaskan Wilderness when I began my research on the Alaskan triangle. I found there were so many months that I had to narrow it down to two categories vanishings and Monsters the monsters included the waheela were sabrewulf the Great Alaskan tiger the northern giant bear an acoustic on the vanishings were too numerous to track. So I went with the 1972 disappearance of then House Majority Leader Hale Boggs. Now a little history on Alaska wage. The largest state in the Union is twice the size of Texas 95% of which is uninhabited thousands of people vanish every year in Alaska since the state started keeping track in nineteen eighty-six over sixty thousand people of vanished all of the monsters in the vanishings have occurred in what is called the Alaskan triangle triangle goes from Anchorage to Juneau to Barrel wage. It makes a rather elongated triangle. I had my work cut out for me. So I started with the Hale Boggs who climbed into a twin engine Cessna 310 and flew out of Anchorage had it for June off. The plane was equipped with the latest tracking device in the pilot was considered one of the best and was known to be able to set a plane down in an emergency without injury to his passengers. At first. I am intrigued because twenty years later a plane on the same flight plan also vanished Without a Trace. However, I dismissed the bogs disappearance when I found out that he had made enemies with Richard Nixon and J Edgar Hoover and when the bogs case was reopened in the late nineties documents before and after he vanished were reviewed it became apparent that his disappearance may not have been an accident and this conclusion became even more suspect when it turned out that photos taken with infrared film from a special search plane had been removed from the case birth. So I dropped the vanishings to moved onto monsters at first. I scoffed at the idea of real monsters. I mean come on, but it was a town of Port walk and one of the monsters it made me a Believer. The town of portlock was essentially a fish processing Port conveniently-located fishing vessels brought in their catch, but the town was plagued with odd murders body of the missing were found dismembered in a manner that couldn't have been done by a bear our cat. There were also trackers and Hunters experienced from the town that ventured out and were never heard from again soon. People were leaving the town and The Cannery actually ran out of Manpower in the 1930s when incidents started to happen. Most of the Russian Elites actually moved out of the town for a year people running the Cannery basically begged their workers to come back and they set up armed guards for a short period of time tried to get their workers back in town. Monster or know people abandoned portlock in mass and it became a ghost town literally overnight. Well, one of the problems I ran into with my research is a few people I needed to hear from had computers. So there was no email and even less were interested in talking to me over the phone of the monsters one stood out the wahila of what the local call the sabrewulf. The reason for. This is a several years ago. I was researching Canada's nahanni Valley located in the Northwest Territories Deadman's Valley to be exact way. It was Untouched by the last ice age and was one of the last homes for the woolly mammoth and what the danai people called the wahila upon further research. I found that the native language of the danai is the same as the Navajo that live in the United States Southwest. I also discovered that their ancient oral history describes a gila the Navajo Nation actually home. An ancient charcoal sketch of the creature the last stop on that research was a complete skeleton of the wahila at a museum on the University of British Columbia Campus of the Alaskan triangle. There is certainly a lot of unexplored ground that could hide any number of unknown species and there is no end of local and Indigenous folklore about what I know without a doubt. It's just somewhere in that uninhabited ninety-five percent of the state of Alaska an animal lurks is science calls of a Gila and locals call a sabrewulf
Mat Hancock defends "Homophobe and Misogynist" Tony Abbot
"There are reports that Tony Abbott who is Australia's prime minister between two, thousand, thirteen and two, thousand and fifteen is being lined up to work alongside the British International Trade Secretary Liz Truss. The appointments not been made official yet, but it is thought he would take a senior role negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union. However, there have been many objections with those opposed to the appointment claiming that Abbott is unfit to represent the UK due to his views on climate change and pass misogynist homophobic comments, his the Health Minister Matt Hancock being grilled on the matter by skies K. barely we need to have the best experts in the world in that working in that field. And as the former prime, Minister Australia. Obviously. Go huge amounts of experience even if it's a homophobic misogynist. Well I I I I think that that is I I don't think that's. True I Dave I haven't seen. It said he I'm sure you'd have to support some of his comments. He's a homophobe a misogynist well. He's also an expert in trade. Well joining me on the line from camera is Karen Middleton the political correspondent for the Saturday paper listening to that Toko cliff. And, of course, Karen knows a thing or two about Abbott. So is he a misogynist homophobic? Well I wouldn't call him both things, but he certainly has been cold those things in the past he's taking controversial positions and. Alpha Prime Minister Julia Gila misogynist effectively when she gave a now famous speech in the parliament suggesting that that she can take lectures on misogyny from men meaning ashish. And he wasn't in favor of the. Vote we had here in Australia on same sex marriage campaigned strongly against it and and was involved with some. Philly. strenuous an unpleasant protests against the Julia Gillard when she was prime minister in general that had fairly success language in it. So you know they certainly have been controversial positions in a number of people here have strong views for and against Mr Abbott, and we are enjoying the debate from afar that's going on in London.
What exactly is a river?
"Listening Elliott would like to know the definition of a river now. I watched a youtube video recently about this about what. The world's shortest shortest river was and the idea was that there was one place where it was a like a spring that emerges and then there's like about fifty yards it's of concrete between it in a river and then flows into the river and the argument was this is the shortest river. It starts here at the spring and it flows out and then it ends up merging with this other river her then there was another example of somewhere else in the world where there are two lakes and there was a connector between them. The water flowed from one lake into the other and that was a river that flowed between between these two bodies of water. Do you have any thoughts about what what what makes a river with depth length. Anything else that it might make something a river versus the old creek or stream. I saw that video to and does get it had definition in it which just like whatever the the cartographers definition about where it has to flow from into. But I'm just going to say it has to be some water that flows in more or less uniform direction in a skinny thing not gonna go into manmade versus. Not because I feel like if you if you dig something and it's manmade but water keeps flowing there for many many years. I mean you made a river you can. You can make a river a lake. Why can't you make a river right? Like if you dig that thing and water keeps flowing on it and then hume's become extinct and five billion years later stuff still flowing like a river it was may may it's like it's a river so the length thing though. There is a minimum length like you can't just take two uber. Bodies have ordered that are separated by one. Millimeter breakdown that one. Millimeter thing and say this is one millimeter distancing. That's a river it's like no you've just you've literally just connected to things. There is nothing in between you have to separate them by a certain amount now. What does that amount is five feet two feet? I feel like we all moralize no most of the time. Things don't get names unless they are considered significant out got to be river this whole competition for shortest rivers causing people to name things in silly ways. If it's like three inches not say this is the World Charles. Wherever that competition for short will make you name things that are not rivers to call reverse verse? That's just ridiculous like you can name give it a name or whatever but if it's like a one inch long it's not a river at all so you need some water flowing flowing through thing that I feel like has to be. I'M NOT GONNA say thinner than it is long. But it should be recognizable as a thing that stuff flows goes down And I think a lot of the things I video probably too short to be over but I think you see it could be something that you could you know. It's the the minimum like shorter than you might think especially given the with if you really want to name something. That's twenty yards long a river. Fine because you might need to have the name for that thing because you might have one body of water another body water. What do you call the thing in? Between does it belong to the left body of water the right body or if it's long enough to be significant it should have a name and you could call it a river You could get into streaming creek and all sorts of stuff like that but I feel like you know river I'm GonNa say it's generic term like dish but it is is in discussions like this especially with the shortest one. I I don't I don't think it's productive to decide whether you're going gonNA call it a creek or stream or creek. Or whatever the other various synonyms are. We're all just saying. Is this a body of water worthy of being named all right I mean I I I think this is like it's however you wanted to find it. There are things that don't look like rivers but if you trace it back it turns is at this leads into a body of water. It ends up becoming the Mississippi River. You can jump over the Mississippi River in Minnesota at the source of it because it's tiny but it becomes the Mississippi the sippy river. It's the Mississippi River and it's it's very much like how do you want to set the definitions Geography is similar to like Strana me where it's like. What's planet well? Some group could define it in some way. But there's sort of like common use and it's very different. Yeah exactly for for professionals. There has to be a hard best definition like for matmaker and stuff like that but for regular people. They don't have to know about that definition when they're discussing rivers in in general that it's it's enough to I feel like there's this is one of those not probably not a lot of debate other than the shortest river people because we most people sort of know the Monday see them at only if you're in the Profession Ashen do you start drawing those fine distinctions and holding too. I do laugh my mom lives in Arizona and we often drive over a bridge over dirt. Sort that is the Gila River and it makes me laugh every time but the fact is in the there is a wet season. They're very briefly. And if there's a monsoon or a big rainstorm or something like that you know it will water will flow underneath that thing. But and they they call it a river even though for a large portion of the year there's no water in it but water flows through there in that direction and when it does. That's that's the Yellow River and sounds to me like you're driving over the Gila river bed for the area. Most of the year. It is a place where waiting for a river. It will get here eventually. It's not here right eight now. It's a riverbed it is. It is in the river is sleeping somewhere else for the moment. I don't know about the La River though about the Riverland Terminator. Two I guess yeah. Yeah and that's that is a river that they ended up putting concrete on and and guiding where it goes and you could call it something else but it was historically a river and it's still basically also very also dry out of the time if movies for sure believed absolutely also there's underground rivers but I don't even WanNa get talk talk about that. 'cause I don't even know what that is underground railroad but a little bit different. I think it's a lot different but okay.

"gila" Discussed on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
"It's all available in the more tab of the ESPN app that I read everything to your liking, Dan. I mean, sort of it sounded like you were reading though, I would have you know, people. This is something I've always objected to in radio that the reads end up sounding like reads instead of how someone would speak, and so I would have preferred while you were reading fine for you to have some energy behind that. You miss any of the show. You check out the podcast. You wanna like that? Well, yeah. Because you've been struggling with the reads today, I feel like you'd be more comfortable looser like you've been very self conscious about the reads today. I am I of betraying another communist because you can't say anything around me. No, no. It's all right. It's out there. So we might as well go down that rabbit hole. Oh yesterday. I felt like a came really strong with the reeds felt like the voices really helped me and not only inject personality, but also read properly and today, I started the show making some mistakes. I misread Jerome as yet them because I thought he was a hockey player. So you're reeds were terrible today. And it's okay, you're not you're not somebody who's a professional broadcaster yesterday. You tried to make them wacky. But then today he come in here, and you try to go wacky again. Because the reads should shouldn't be about you mean, they should be about the damn sponsor like, but you're trying to make them wacky. And you give out the past code wrong in a way that nobody understands 'cause you're trying to be wacky with a word. It's always about me. Then drama Gila is a hockey player. I mean, no, I know, but I just figured hockey players would probably have some sort of eastern European. He's not eastern European Canadian. Okay. You know, where's where's his grandparents from Canada? This is the single most disorienting conversation I've ever seen on this show because I don't understand how ROY knows so much about hockey because usually expect and I'm sorry that I'm saying this, and I might welcome back. I'm sorry. If this sounds a little racist..
