But they don't have thousands of engineers that can help them build data apart from custom for their use case. We've built out and we enable them to do that. I would love to go all the way back into retell the history of distributed computing because everybody will have heard the term big data. This was a really popular term. Five seven years ago and i think that concept that term. The fact that he was being talked about in normal business circles was the result of progress in the world of distributed compute and storage. I'd love you to rewind however far back you'd think is appropriate to go. Maybe it's back to the two thousand six yahoo days tell the modern history of distributing computing. What it means and why so interesting and important. I think what happened. Is that around two thousands. We hit this wall because moore's wall in figure out how to make computers faster so everything started moving into these data centers new computer and it was a new data center in this data centers. Super-computer it would do all your competitions for you but as hit this moore's wall and it couldn't scale these computers are onto ninety five. The cpu speed stagnant computers. Getting faster and more computers are basically being three gigahertz since system. So that's kind of started meeting. We probably have to distribute. Our needs are not going on on the data. We have is not going down. The number beating processing capacity we need is just increasing exponential. We probably need more machines. So that's when. I started distributing ounce into data centers it soon became infeasible for every organization to manage thousands of thousands of machines on their own on prime so the cloud revolution kind of off said. Hey this is a utility. Why don't we manage august thousands of chance for you in the cloud. You can just use them. This new computer in the cloud started storing things on very cheaply and get started. What was the harder. If you go back to a time was we have to move the computations close to the data you specify what you wanna do your data but then you had to sink all map produce which was really clever about. Let's have data on how people have clicked on a website since you can't buy supercomputer anymore. You've probably distributed that over many machines. We have one hundred machines that drives and started on the horizon sheen's the the pedophile of how people have clicked on your website. But now you wanna compute something simple example. We just wanna see what's the average number of books on a particular link. Twenty years ago would be described the code the takes all those numbers in averages them and then go over all of the data sets but here to do that but would have to move all the data from these hundreds of machines through the machine. That's doing the competition. And i would just crashed in it. In fact we did that at uc berkeley. We were developing of spark. We crashed parts of networks. They called us up. What are you doing was transferring all this data from all these machines every other machine so that was name of the game in the early days. How do we avoid that. How do we actually move pieces of the competition. The average just while he's hundred machines let them compete at locally and send some kind of aggregates to you mentioned that originally that was a unique solve but then today. We no longer have to do it that way. So what's changed networking technology. It's a new modem. It's the x sixty. It does a couple things better. It's also five nanometer modem so it should be more power efficient Some numbers that like samsung. who's the one making. The chips says that five nanometer node is twenty percent better power efficiency. We have to actually see how that works out. Qualcomm's giving similar numbers but the net result is five g is now actually really finally integrated into all android flagships in the good way where it is not necessarily going to cause as big of a hit to your battery life and combined with new node and the other improvements and you know power efficiency. "I've had this thing sitting here since the summer and I've been meaning to review it. However, I've been so busy that I've had to put it on the back burner for some time. Unfortunately. If I order it from the Talon electronics website, you're still looking at $100 after shipping the towel on PC one has a cortex A7 arm processor off. 1 gigahertz one gigabyte of RAM and 8 gigabytes of internal storage. You also get a mouse power adapter that has a switch on it and gave em a v cable to plug into composite televisions that includes many of those old CRT televisions. "The new MAC pro. Thirteen inch looks great for photographers. So this just got announced today on Monday when I record the podcast. Their new thirteen inch macbook pro. This is what I've been waiting for now. The fifteen inch. The new fifteen inch has already been announced but personally I like the thirteen inch a little bit better. I think is a little bit more portable in the screens are so good that I do just fine doing my work on it and I was really curious to see what the specs we're going to be on this new machine and what the pricing is going to be. So I'm going to go over the machine. The I think makes the most sense for photographers and that version has the Intel core. I five quad core processor right which is very nice. Eight gigabytes of Ram Onboard Ram. And then the five twelve gigabyte SSD. So that's the model that I'm talking about right now. It's not the cheapest one but there's only one up from the cheapest one by the way this laptop that I'm talking about brand new is one thousand. Four hundred ninety nine dollars. Seems like I paid that much or more for my existing thirteen inch which by the way I bought in early. Two Thousand Fourteen early two thousand fourteen. And it's you know it's still working. I to upgrade it. This one might be a machine that I do if I can get the scratched together to do it. But they are good investments seriously. They are getting investments. They they go and go and go. So what makes this new one kind of cool well has a number of highlights first of all this one has the new. Magic Keyboard has the redesign scissor mechanism. So that part I think alone at the keyboard on these new ones is the good keyboard not the one that has some problems a couple of years ago. Very nice retina display They made to the stereo sound better and they have these immersive stereo speakers in the battery. Life is a bit better to now. This one also has the touch bar. Which is very nice. The touch part self is actually a retina display as well and it's contextual depends on you know which APP you're renting as to you. Know what options are there on? It is sort of adapts Depending on what you're doing at the moment in a really makes it easier to navigate menus and things like that the power button has the touch. Id Sensor so you can quickly log in to the macbook pro. Just by you know putting your finger on their fingerprint and then you can also use touch. Id to make purchases over the web if you have apple pay. So that's another very nice feature so as I mentioned before the model that I like is the one thousand four hundred ninety nine dollar model one point four gigahertz eighth generation Intel core. I five Qui- core processor with a burst. Speed up to three point nine gigahertz and then it also has the eight gigabytes of Ram in the five twelve gigabyte. Ssd alrighty now in terms of supporting external devices is got thunderbolt three ports supporting bi directional transfer speeds of up to forty gigabytes a second while also supporting ten gigabytes per second USB three point one and device charging Scott Wi fi five eight zero two point eleven A. C. Built in for Wireless Networking Bluetooth. Five Point Oh which will allow you. To connect additional compatible peripherals and there is a facetime hd Webcam so nice looking machine comes in space gray or silver always kinda wanted the space gray version of Mac book. I don't know we'll see. This is the most tempted. I've been to upgrade my two thousand fourteen thirteen inch and We'll see how things go I'm posting of course the podcast on facebook. They kind of got stalled around four gigahertz, they, they thought they were going to be able to make five and six gigahertz gypsum, turned out physics defied them. And so they instead of making faster chips, individual chips, they made multiple core chips. So it said of having won four gigahertz processor. They might have two processors in the same. But the only thing I would like to get like a drive or something does speed up the vote, and that's the other important factor in this. Right it. The truth is the a MD chips are a little less expensive and a little slower. But maybe if you could take the money, you save and put it some other things that would speed things up because for instance. If you're doing word processing, then matter how fast your computer is your slower than any processor you could put in a modern computer. On the other hand, the speed with which you load programs, load the operating system, save files that's more important to you. So a solid state drive that is much much faster boot up times and and pro and times to load programs and save files that's gonna make a big difference in overall system performance..

"The fire stick you're getting buffering but you're not getting buffering when you're using it on your computer couple of possibilities the the fundamental cause is there's something about the internet connection on the fire stick that isn't as good as the internet connection on the computer it's either not keeping up so it gets to the end of the buffer and then it says okay pause we got gotta rebuff her that that's a sign of a slow connection or there's something about the connection the packets are arriving late or out of order and you can see that in in statistics sometimes if you look at statistics on internet connection you'll see terms like latency and jitter these are ways of describing internet disorders that cause problems in the quality of the audio or video and a problem in audio and video means you're gonna lose buffering your after rebuff her so a couple of you know a couple of thoughts one that amazon fire stick isn't as you know it's behind your tv it's not as good an antenna it's not doesn't have as good line of sight perhaps to your wifi access point that's a bad thing it may be it's not using five gigahertz it's only can do the two point four gigahertz band that's very common in smaller internet of things devices like fire sticks that could be part of the issue as well your computer is better placed it has a better wi fi card and maybe he's using a better frequency or better channel all of that means it's not gonna suffer as much because he's got a better connection so how do you fix this well you know you could get a depends on what's wrong and it may just be a the fire sticks never going to be as good as your computer 'cause it's a cheap device right how much did you pay for that forty fifty bucks how much did you pay for your computer a lot more the computer has a better wifi card in it that could be one problem could be where the fire stick is positioned it doesn't have as good a view of the wifi access point you might be able to fix that by moving the wifi access points so that if daily line of sight to the fire stick or getting an extending cable for the fire stick so that goes hdmi cable so it can be extended out from maybe behind the tv behind the tv's not a great place that's where fire sticks usually end up so you know this is just this is i mean the answer is it's a bad internet connection improve it but it's it's not at all uncommon and stunt even an uncommonly different qualities of connections in the same room with different devices that's not at all incoming by the how how you fix it well that's going to depend on what's going on maybe justify i mean think about it that fire stick the size of a us biki there's not much of an antenna in there it's probably a very cheap wifi chip i'm actually not surprised you might get a you know you can get a fire tv the amazon device that's away from the tv and has a large device costs a little bit more has more area for why that might be better lots of things like that eighty eight eighty eight ask leo the phone number eight eight eight.
