Weekday mornings on W. N. Y C. Just need to queue on CBC Radio one in Canada and across North America on Sirius XM 1 69 and for P R X. My name is Tom Power. Welcome to the show. Thanks for tuning in. Thanks. A lot to Allie has sand for sitting in for me yesterday. It Z. Nice to be back. If you know David Cross, you might know him through comedy, right? I mean, there was a sketch show on HBO. Mr. Show, Or maybe you came across him as the never knew. Tobias few Kay. In the sitcom series arrested Development, Maybe in the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, or you watched his stand up. And yet David Cross is really funny. But think about being really funny is sometimes that reputation can overshadow Versatility as an actor, and over the years David has taken on dramatic roles in movies like The Post and Kill Your Darlings, And In his latest film, he goes all in Guys. Sorry. Sorry. Thanks, but let's dial back on. You're being so miserable. Well, I apologize, but my wife is Alive. I'm alive. I don't No. No. That's David Cross opposite Debra Messing in the new film, The Dark Divide. The movie is based on the memoir by a butterfly expert named Robert Michael Pile is about his solo research expedition through a treacherous national park in Washington state. After his wife passes from cancer. And even though it tells a personal story set in the nineties, the film has a lot to say about where we are today, especially as we look at the American election. The dark divide is now available to view on demand. David Cross is here with me now live on the show. Talk about it. Hi. How are you? Tom. I'm good. I like your intro music. Do you like it? It's all it's by a band from Saskatoon. Yeah, I like it. We're just trying to just trying to keep the numbers out in Saskatoon s. So you have how big is the band? The band is, I think about eight people. Okay. Well, maybe if they can add a horn section or something, you might Jack those numbers up by 25% of its hoping that if each of the band members Mom's listens to the show, you might be able T o double in numbers. I I really as ever. Sandy before we turn the microphone on. I really liked the movie. David a lot. I really loved watching it. And it was interesting to watch. You do a dramatic role. I have never seen. You do that. Outside of like that. I think it's how you play Allen Ginsberg and I saw you play in the post. But Why was this one? The kind of the one you wanted to make your first dramatic leading role? Uh, well, it's not like I had, you know, 20 scripts in front of me and I got to choose. It was Um, in great part because I was afforded the opportunity and the script came my way and I don't get a lot of these kind of opportunities and And I really I liked the script and I Really like the story and I Was excited about the challenge. Because a zoo you noted, I haven't done I haven't like Headlined a movie that I'm basically, you know, in every shot and And there's a good third of it. There's no dialogue, either, you know. And that was, uh all of that was exciting. And then, uh, Kind of sealed the deal with meeting the writer director Tom Putnam, who had been working on this, bringing it to life for a 10 point, Like eight years, and And I knew if we didn't connect, it would be a mistake to go forward because of the nature of this kind of Uh, movie and how? How difficult it would be the chute, which was it was extremely difficult because we shot in a lot of the same locations that are in. You know Robert's book and that lava tube was the real lava tube. And you know all that kind of stuff, and it was very difficult to get crew. They're so skeleton crew, no amenities. No trailers, no electricity, no Internet. No You know, for most of the shoot and And So I met with Tom and we met in a bar in l A, uh, initial is kind of initially about like, an hour. I think we gave ourselves and we ended up there for three hours is drinking and talking, and I really connected with him. He was Totally Amenable to my ideas and collaborating and and we just kind of it was very good from the very beginning, So I jumped in and that's you know, it's the long answer to that question. Can you tell me more for people who haven't seen the film about like Watch your hands in the film yet, either. So I'm di don't want Don't spoil it for you. I'm glad I was able to give you the review of it. So that's that's good. Can you give people the The idea of exactly what you had to go through there for people who haven't seen it, You know, like you really are in the middle of the woods. You know you're jumping down cliffs here in ice ice, cold water, but you really had to do all that. Yeah, it was, um S Oh, it's a It's a stretch 124 mile stretch of Of wild Kind of uncharted, I think, the last in the contagious United States of forest in the Pacific Northwest Gifford Pinchot National Forest, which Has earned the nickname the Dark Divide over the centuries and And so it's where Robert Pilot was a real person who really went through this. We take a couple liberties and we took from other books of his kind of major amalgamation of them. Uh and And we shot in those real locations and it's it's how was it? What was it like for you? Um, it was. It was without question the hardest thing physically and emotionally that I've ever done, Uh, work wise, and, uh, Production. Um and as I said, there were no amenities and And you're staying, You know, because you're Driving up to a point. You have to get access by national Park. Uh, people and you get access to a certain point and then you just can't bring vehicles any further. There's no way to get vehicles in there so then You're lugging stuff off of a truck or a pass fan and you're going through the woods. Sometimes, you know, Quarter mile and sometimes a full mile into the interior and You know, As I said, there's no it's not like you could set up a craft service table and there's no trailer to go to. And we did this for you. It was a 22 days shoot and And all that stuff you see is is I mean, it's beautiful. It's a stunning visually very, very Kind of luscious, beautiful movie to watch, but Uh huh. And I've never I had never been to the Pacific Northwest Woods before, And that's a totally different thing than I'm used to. Uh, I'm used to more East Coast American. You know, Georgia where I grew up, and it's Woods air cool there, but it's just not as they're not as big and lush and dense and treachery and treacherous and you just feel any feel small. You feel physically. Smaller in those woods and And Yeah, it was just it was difficult. There were I remember. There were three nights where we were shooting. It was it was so long to get me from where we would wrap the location. There were three days I can't bear what we were shooting, but I think was near the lava tube, actually, But just to get back to a main road was took about an hour and because of turn around, you know I had I just stayed in this cabin. Uh, There was nothing around to eat, and there's no food available. So we had a big thing. A big jar of peanuts, and I had beef jerky. And that was my dinner. I gotta bucks before we went to that location. I got one of those box wine things good. And I got a big box. So Platt classy. Yeah, and, uh and I put it in the car and then Would that my dinner would be beef jerky and peanuts. Did.
