"Not really not a mention of the six airplane being held on the ground if this obviously if this was donald trump is president. It would be front page news it would be the lead for cnn nbc abc. It is amazing. How how how corrupt they are amazing. How corrupt the media is this is by any definition a story. I don't know how big a story i don't know how many americans i don't know what what's gonna happen. Apparently being held on the ground in northern afghanistan not being allowed to leave right by the taliban. That's kind of a big deal. It's kind of a big deal. You know what else you don't see you know what else she didn't see anywhere it didn't i say the meat we talked about this last week. I would say it's kind of a big deal. The president joe biden Had a conversation with the former president of afghanistan. Ghani that snake who took off with one hundred sixty million. I forget where. I don't even remember where he is or central. America is he. He's he's he went to columbia. Not i don't know where when his sons went to columbia anyway. He's he's he's a snake. He took the money and ran but they had that conversation. Not so long ago. With joe biden aspartame to lie and only joe biden. Ask him to lie. Khurana joe biden. Light himself joe biden. Looked in the cameras told america that the afghan military was going to hold up and the afghan afghan government was going to be in control after we left now that obviously you know most of us had our doubts but it turns out was a flat out lie and they costly one. I think it cost thirteen service. People their lives gives me more than that. I mean it's a lot of civilians their lives to but think of this think of this. He tells he asks ghani to lie to say he said perceptions important We need we need the right perception. We need people to think that you're you're good to go. You're going to hold up the military's gonna hold up and then on july eighth biden Told del everyone the military was ready. And they were gonna they were gonna reenter thousand and seventy five thousand. Well armed well You know he lied to everybody to the world to the world and he has to lie. I dare you to find that story like on the front page of any news. I was probably in the new york post. But i believe all the usual suspects. Abc nbc cbs cnn new. They just ignored it. That is amazing. They spent weeks weeks talking about Donald trump's phone call to ukraine when he asked them to look into the corrupt biden family. A phone call to ukraine and it was like ridiculous. They impeached him for it. They wrote a thousand stories. You know talk shows and talking heads talking about how a inappropriate that was. You actually have a president asking another leader to lie to lie to cut to cover up the truth. Here's the exact quote to there is a need whether it is true or not to project. A different picture is what biden told him that. Not that's by definition asking him to live guys crazy that's by definition asking ghani to lie and what it's that's some harmless lie and we'll get to the you get to the harmless lie by comparison at least but that is amazing. How was it not like the big story in the frigging world when you have a president who is lying. Everybody lying to the public lying to the american people liked the world and asking our ally our little this this regime that lasted. What was it. Eleven days after we announced. We're leaving essentially. It was really like a weekend where they crumbled. They fell collapsed and he took off with a bunch of money on. I don't even know who went with him but he took off. And and the you know. The country fell into the hands of the taliban in a couple of days. It's one thing to have like a commentary a opinion show where you say. I don't think it was a big deal. Whatever you'll you cover up for the guy it's it's you know god people do it on both sides. You know sean hannity. He would defend trump. No matter what right. Yeah and and. I'm sure all the usual chris hayes landlords so donald will defend biden. No matter what but to ignore that to ignore it. An act like it didn't happen. That is not media bias that corruption that has immorality. They the the idea that he's your guy you know he's my guy so i'm gonna pretend happen but if you're a reader of the new york times or boston globe i don't think there's too many of those left but don't you demand better. Don't you expect more you if you want to do a straight news story and just have that quote. You just read in quotes. And here's what happened and you know you decide whether you think it's appropriate or not. That's one thing but to just ignore it and say ooh hopefully it'll just go away and our guy won't it won't embarrass our guy well. It won't hurt our side. That's just so free. I mean a a topic. We do every day here and tweet about it all the time but these are just two. This is a weekend two examples. And i haven't even got to the to the the meaningless lie yet. Which makes a t tell me this. Which do you find. More troubling when the president of the united states lies about something like this about the readiness the preparedness of the afghan government afghan military as we try to get out as we put our marines in harm's way as we get thirteen of our of our heroic warriors killed for no damn reason. Is that more disturbing. It's disturbing or the fact that president meets with some rabbis. It says oh yeah. I remember visiting the tree life. Synagogue tree of life. God if you don't remember was the site of mass shooting. I believe eleven people were slaughtered. Eleven jewish antisemitic A hate crime. I guess you'd obviously hate crime. Berta eleven people was the two thousand eighteen in pennsylvania so biden talking to rabbis just for no reason. No good reason just lies and said yeah. I went visited the tree of life synagogue and his own white house. Pr team had to issue a. I don't know what you call now correction. If you're rolling stone it's called an update. They do an update and they say actually. He didn't go there so he says he does. Something that is so easy to verify so easy to check. Does that kind of liar bother you. More than the guy who tells the big lag. I mean to me the big lie given the consequences. I agree but the big lie. He was trying to accomplish something you know. He was trying to convince people that the afghan it was a good time to leave. Yes he wanted the photo op for september eleventh right so he said it was a strategy a strategy. We're gonna lie about this and we're going to convince people that it is a good a pro an appropriate time to get out of afghanistan so to me there's a purpose to that light doesn't obviously make it right. It's it's it's very disturbing but when you have somebody who so casually and comfortably lies like to take advantage of a situation. I guess that i visited the synagogue. When immediately the people at the synagogue say no and the people at the white house say well. I guess this really no way to spin this. So we'll just say it's a holiday weekend labor day weekend..

"William burns a veteran diplomat to kabul to meet secretly with taliban leader abdul ghani bara dr and discussed the us evacuation efforts and biden's intention to prevent terror cells from operating in afghanistan after the us leaves according to a us official familiar with the meeting. The meeting was first reported by the washington post while thousands of americans have already left the country. The administration hasn't specified the number that still remain and with biden saying he will only extend the august thirty first deadline for a full withdrawal if the evacuation is not complete. They now have just seven days to get the rest of the americans out of afghanistan. It's a major test for an administration still reeling from the talibans. Speedy takeover and the stakes are enormous. Biden's ham fisted handling of the withdrawal has already undermined. Us credibility with allies now. Thousands of american lives could hang in the balance and the success or failure and getting them out will shape how biden's presidency is remembered the key right now for president biden in order to get beyond the chaos of the withdrawal decision is to be able to complete the evacuation of all of the us citizens and afghans that we promised to evacuate says leon panetta who served as secretary of defense and cia director under president barack obama. If we fail in that commitment. I think it will further undercut our credibility. The administration has been working overtime to ensure it doesn't since august fourteenth. Seventy thousand people have been evacuated from afghanistan. Biden said on tuesday. The pentagon told reporters that as of august twenty third. Four thousand american passport-holders have been evacuated. The administration has also asked six airlines to supply eighteen aircraft for additional assistance. The goal biden said on august twentieth is to ensure any american. Who wants to get home will get home. But there are complex challenges to fulfilling that objective the biden administration doesn't know how many americans are currently left in afghanistan wanting to be evacuated. Americans are asked to voluntarily register their contacts and whereabouts with the us embassy when they arrive in afghanistan but many don't addition there's no requirement that americans notified the embassy when they depart the country leaving the state department's database clogged with contacts for americans who may have already gotten out. This is a dynamic number. white house. Spokeswoman jen psaki said tuesday about the number of americans who need to be evacuated. We're working our by our to refine and make it precise. The.

"You can keep your mind off the mess and watch the movie how you can help people in afghanistan by eh louise berry after twenty years of us military presence in afghanistan. The taliban took control of kabul on sunday amid the chaotic evacuation of the afghan national government and western diplomats distressing footage at kabul airport eerily similar to scenes from the us evacuation of saigon showed afghans attempting to flee on departing us jets. While diplomats abandoned the american embassy critics say the unfolding humanitarian disaster is anything but the secure and orderly evacuation promised by president joe biden who said on july eighth. There was little chance of a taliban. Takeover president ashraf ghani fled the country on sunday and the taliban assumed power soon after afghan civilians fear a return to the brutal taliban regime of nineteen ninety six through two thousand one a period where religious and ethnic minorities were persecuted and stonings and public executions were commonplace. Women were systematically victimized under the taliban dependent on male chaperones to leave their homes and unable to access education amid the chaos of the last few days thousands of afghans have fled the country many who were promised refuge abroad or were awaiting visa decisions are stuck in the country as all commercial commercial. Flights have been cancelled. The united nations estimates that as many as eighteen million afghans nearly half the country's population need urgent humanitarian aid including food and housing. Here are some ways. You can support people in afghanistan from donating to relief funds to assisting women refugees donate to relief funds and aid agencies. Many organizations have launched. Emergency aid appeals since the fall of kabul to the taliban on sunday major international ngos such as the international committee of the red cross the international rescue committee and the un human rights committee are seeking donations to support their frontline work in the country. "Making sure that they didn't get into the hands of the taliban women. The taliban has been taking some american weapons for years. So maybe they figured that was more of the same. But you're asking a really great question here which is you know. Why didn't he take steps to sort of make the pull out. Not as terrible as it became. You know. I think on one hand you know you saw the president trying to frankly paint a very rosy picture and offer an assessment about the likelihood that the afghan forces would stand up. That was very much not in keeping with the advice. He seems to have been getting at least from his intelligence agencies so when the president does that is he putting spin on things is he not understanding what he's hearing is he misleading the public. Because he doesn't want to you know kind of own the disaster or make it seem as dire. I dunno. i suspect we'll we'll find that out so now that the us is essentially going to be dealing with an afghanistan that is run by the taliban. How does that change our national security risks. As a country i think at arguably increases them significantly. I mean we are. The united states is putting a big bet on the taliban acting as i guess what we would call in relative terms a responsible actor which is to say not allowing afghanistan to become a safe haven for terrorist groups the way it was before the september eleventh attacks whether they will make good on that commitment remains be seen and i think that's really the big one big question we don't have a force nef ghanistan right now. We don't have an embassy in afghanistan right now which means we're not we don't have. Cia personnel on the ground running spies running agents. We're gonna have a really hard time collecting intelligence from within the country. We're going to have to rely on satellite imagery on communications intercepts. We're going to try and do this. Counter terrorism mission from afar. That's gonna be really hard so really the future of afghanistan and our security there. An intentional thrust us really rests with. I think what the taliban decides to do and how aggressive the united states is going to be encountering any threats like if we see terrorist camps rebuilding portions of afghanistan. Do we go in and take them out. We bomb them. Do we send in special operations forces to kind of get in and get out. I think you could expect that the administration would do that. And they're betting that the taliban knows they would and will potentially take steps to make sure that those terrorist groups don't set up base there but we're gonna have to see what happens. I also wanna talk a little bit more about the afghan president ashraf ghani who essentially fled the country over the weekend. Even hearing president biden. Talk about president ghani's departure. I feel like you could sense some animosity there or frustration or disappointment that this president did not stay in place to try to lead his country. And in fact that was part of biden's argument for you know. Look if the afghans are not going to do the work to try to keep their country intact like why are we gonna stay there but i wonder like what role does ghani playing this and also we're is he like. What do we know about the circumstances under which he fled and why he is not in the country. I'm not sure where he is right now. I believe i've seen reports that he's in a neighboring country Yeah the anger from president. Biden was palpable against you know ghani and by extension the political leadership of kenniston who he sees as essentially abandoning the country afghanistan political leaders gave up and fled the country. The afghan military collapsed sometime without trying to fight again. This is in the category of things that we really need to know more about. But i find it very telling that he left as quickly as he did. I mean it. Almost felts negotiated in a way. I'm not saying that it was but we've seen reports. I should say provincial. Officials striking deals with the taliban in advance them coming into their cities and basically just handing over the keys. This was really a question to for the white house. I mean the you know the leader to leader communication. Did we not understand that he was going to pack up and go or did we know if we had a sense that he was going to leave this quickly. That might have been a tell for us because once the president of afghanistan left. I mean that was the signal that effectively the the game was over that the taliban was going to face no real resistance and when they came into kabul. But i should say to. You know the this kind of dim view that president biden and others have of ashraf. Ghani i mean this really goes. I think for a lot of the political class afghanistan over the years. I mean you're talking about a government where corruption has been endemic. And i think you know. A generation of us officials have just been very clear light and skeptical about their ability to to maintain a country absent us presidents and assistance. So in that sense. I don't know that anybody had a lot of hopes that ghani was going to try. And you know hold down the ford fight to the bitter end. But what i also find. You know so remarkable about this moment is that it's almost like it's it's so hard for us as americans to believe that. An american president would knowingly walk away from a country understanding that it was just going to descend indicate loss and be overtaken by militant fundamentalists. But that's what happened. I mean he knew that this would occur. Think it's hard for a lot of americans to swallow this right now. The idea that knowing how likely it was that things would go very badly that he still made the decision to go. But he's been very frank about that in his comments and it's just it's it's so stunning for me to see. I think because it's so at odds with what three successive american presidents have told us there which is that you know. There were hopeful about the mission. You know we're trying to build stability. We're trying to get the government to a place where it can stand on its own. I mean what we're finding now. Is that free years. People have privately understood that that was not likely to be the case. And you know it's striking to hear an american president basically say you know. Come on quick hitting yourself like we're going and he is stuck by.

This is WNYC at nine oh six. Hello, welcome to NewsHour from the BBC. Well service, it comes to live from Australia's in central London. I'm Russia today. We'll have extensive coverage of the seventy fifth anniversary of this people of western Europe. Landing was made this morning on the coast of France by troops of the allied expeditionary force. This landing is part of the concerted United Nations plan for the liberation of Europe, General Eisenhower on d day when allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy and began the, to end the Nazi Germany occupation of France. We'll hear the memories of those who were there and ask how today's transatlantic alliance has stood the test of time to stay with us for that story. We begin today, though, with Sudan, a country that has plunged into increasing uncertainty and brutal violence on Monday security forces attacked a weeks, long sitting outside the army headquarters in the capital. Cartoon dozens of people have been killed, though, the numbers on disputed, the assault was the worst violence in Sudan. Since April the eleventh when Omar al-bashir was overthrown. He had been in power for three decades. The ensuing talks between the transitional military council and the opposition would not making enough progress, which is why the demonstrators continued to protest consistent a numerous reports say the paramilitary unit the fed rapid security forces, also known as the Jeonju, we'd, which gained notoriety for brutal atrocities, in the full conflict in western, Sudan, back in two thousand and three is now roaming the streets and initiating random violence this morning. We got through to three women who fled from the paramilitaries, and now in hiding in a house in cartoon they asked us not to use either their names or their voices for fear of being identified. So we've stopped what they told us my first question. What evidence do they have? That the rapid support forces and the John Jay we'd a one and the same the either part of the rapid support forces, they are them, actually they were wearing the uniform of the rapid support forces and it was clear from their accent. And what is it about the accent, then that distinguishes them and makes us think that it was the judge he'd well here in Sudan, we have different accents, depending on which part of Sudan, you're from you can distinguish it? Can you give us a sense of what's happening today because there is, of course from the outside world's perspective. The government is saying that x number of people were in fact, killed the opposition are saying, far more have been killed is the violence continuing today. Yes, the violence is continuing. But in a very random way, they stop people in the street. They asked them to leave their cars. They beat them. They pee on them the humiliate them they. They still people you can't predict what they could do in the streets, and it's your it's your understanding that they are being given free rein to do what they want to do, it seems like that less than an hour ago. We heard gunshots in a residential neighborhoods, and there's no need for gunshots. They're just randomly attacking people. Terrorizing people and how do you account for that? Why are they doing that obviously to scare people? So they make sure people don't go out in the streets to stop people from demonstrating, they're giving us a taste of what could be to them. This is just a fraction of what they can expose. They've been practicing this for years. And now they're giving us a taste of what could happen to him. Let's go back to Monday. You said you've been in hiding since Monday. What happened to you on Monday on Monday? We were all at the Sitton. It was the last day of Ramadan. We go to phone call from our friend that we should find a place to hide because hundreds and hundreds of pickups were on their way to. Attack then they started shooting. So we found an electrician control room. We hid there we were on the ground flat on the ground. Trying to hide from the live ammunition. The rapid support forces attacked the room and they showed a small glass window right on the top of where we were hiding, we started begging them, not to shoot. Luckily, they didn't shoot us but they were standing at the exit door beating everybody who was running outside the room, brutally with sticks. Whips different kinds of sticks and whips and they will men men and women in this hiding in this room. Yes. Men women and old ladies. Yes. Then they led us to this wired caged area on the way they were beating us about ten of them at that point beating soul and on the left as we were running. There was a building skeleton of a building, that's still under construction with snipers shooting randomly, then they asked us to jump over barbed wire as they beat us. We were trying to jump over the fence, one of the women, the old lady, that was with us her clothes got stuck on the wire, and he would beat her as he. Laughed an apologizing at the same time. So it was very confusing psychological manipulation, you know, he would apologize but at the same time he would beat her calling her mother, we jumped over the fence. And after we jumped they didn't give us a chance. They just beat you and your forced to run away as they beat you. We have to run through them on each side as they beat us. They were insulting us and making comments about our clothing and saying, are you doctors because three of us were wearing eyeglasses. They were provoked by the glasses because in their head. It's a sign of education or something, I don't know. The snipers were still shooting. They were still beating us. We went forward as we were being beaten, and we kept on finding more and more of them and this lasted for about an hour. So as we reached a small green patch offense area in the middle of the street where they told us to sit and locked us in there until the pickups arrived, as we were sitting there, some of us were injured badly, and then the RSF soldier said things like how about we just set them on fire or how about we just let two of them go and kill the rest, or some of them would just give us. I gestures like a sexual implication. You know, we were waiting there for about half an hour, as we were being insulted, the beatings stopped by then, and then the pickups arrived, we were trying our best to stick together as a group because we didn't know where they were taking us during all of this the shooting was going on. So we were terrified that we would get shot by random bullets and then they drove over the bridge,.
