"So but yeah, I think he's definitely of that era. He's the standout, and I probably wouldn't argue with you. Careful to having that high up on the list. Yeah, I mean, he won, I'm just having quick lucky one F one races in 54, 55. One quite a lot in 57. In two different cars, the two 50 FM has already and the BRM, and obviously non chat if one racers could range from basically a Grand Prix, like the international trophy, but just not a chapter counting around to some minor events. So there is a mix of quality across the races that he won. But I don't think any of these. I'm pretty sure the contemporaries would have seen him as a threat. And when we did the piece a few years back on him, we spoke to in titch marshes and other guests are now top ten podcasts sometimes and he did say that at the time he would have been regarded as one of the top three or four drivers in say the late 50s. And now if you're one of the top three or four drivers, you're going to win races, aren't you? There's another one of those intriguing ones if had he lived. Beyond 59 and what would he have been like in the one and a half liter era in Formula One 60s? Yeah, because he'd fallen out with Ferrari the Ferrari team and walked out. He was killed at Ava seen his own Porsche, but he was still very popular at born. So there's a good chance that he may have found himself in a BRM in 60 61 if he then hung around, would he have been would he have had access to the one half liter V8 in which Graham hill won the world championship in. And then he's probably on abilities, probably somewhere between hill and Richie in. So against it didn't quite get a win with BRM, would you kind of get into more and more conjecture, don't you? But he definitely, he's definitely into the realm of its offensive that this drive didn't win a world championship race. All right, is it offensive that the number one driver didn't win a world championship race? Who is it? And what are their stats? Number one is Chris Ayman, 96 three 76, 96 starts, a best finish of second 11 podiums, 5 poles and three fastest laps. And I think this is a comfortable number one. There are some people that write aim as being among the best of his era and should could would have thought for a world championship. Never mind a win. He's probably the only driver on this list you'd say was perhaps perhaps good enough to win a world championship, that's a bit debated with some of the other people further down in this perhaps. But the reason the main reason he's on this list is the number of times he's in. He's in position to win a Grand Prix. So it Spanish Grand Prix 1960. And by the way, he's leading Ferrari in 68 with Jackie X's teammate. So and he's the team leader. So that tells you that tells you something. It's obviously a legend. So he's leading Spanish Grand Prix in 68. When his field pump filed, that was one that got away, he was battling John surtees in Belgium, when a stone pierced the radiator. Don't worry, the reasons for retirement will get more ridiculous. Okay. Canada 68, you led the 72 of the 90 laps when the transmission failed. So that's three races in 68. He was actually one of the fastest drivers in 68, could have fought for the world championship. That's the period where Arthur gym Clark is killed really. You've got Jackie Stewart, Graham hill and Chris Amon kind of fighting to be the kind of feel that I was Jack to you obviously did stamp his authority in the end. During that sort of post Clark era. Spanish Grand Prix 1969, he was 40 seconds ahead of Stuart when his engine broke. Belgian 1970 was all over Pedro Rodriguez's BRM V12 BRM for the whole race in the March 7 O one, which wasn't much cop has a Grand Prix car. I would suggest and finished a close second. Monza 71, the famous streaming race, the Peter gethin one, Ayman was probably the quickest guy there, but ripped off his whole visor instead of just one and got a blast of 200 mile hour air. You could say that's his fault. I mean, even that is really ridiculous. And then the race that I was fortunate enough to speak to him about. When I went to New Zealand and he's fantastic, he was fantastic company. And we did a race in my life when you picked the 90 72 French Grand Prix, which he dominated from pole for matra. Got a puncture and charged back and he took something like a minute out of Jackie Stewart in the lead. He was on a completely different level that day and he was adamant that the car and he was just that they should have won that race. It was what it was that race where there were lots of shards and bits of stones because I said to our Stuart says he was deliberately avoiding them and that you weren't. That's nonsense. We were quick enough. Some of them were just unavoidable. And if they were to be avoided, I could do it. So yeah, I mean, that's a ridiculous list of races. Any one of those could have been a win. And he did win two non championship F one races. He won the 19 71 race at the source in 1971 in the March 7 O one ahead of Jackie Stewart in another car. So top draw driver easy number one is Damien going to disagree with me. No, not at all. Interesting things about Chris Amon is terrible judgment generally is his main problem. That he understandably ran out of patience with Ferrari because of reliability. But if he'd stuck around for 70, and 71, he'd have been a world championship contender, I'm sure. And he knew it. The matra 72 race of the French Grand Prix talk about is always a standout one. I think he was on a circuit that was horrifically dangerous and difficult and fast. He bested Jackie Stewart, which says everything. I think he should have won a Grand Prix definitely. Obviously. But he always said he didn't consider himself unlucky because he had this unluckiest man ever tag, which is kind of haunted him throughout his the rest of his life. He said he wasn't unlucky. He was incredibly lucky, in fact, because he survived. Which I think is true of that era. The chances were high chance you weren't going to come out that era, which is washed away, Jackie retired when he did, and so definitely without looking back, Chris survived. So he had a lot to be thankful for. Yeah. Well, I think that's because it's the Mario and Jesse quote isn't there you saw lucky that if he took up undertaking people was stopped dying, I think was the Mario quote. But just also he just did everything else outside. So he won the tasman cup in 1969, which was pretty effectively like a winter world championship almost. Against people like Graham hill and jock and rin, obviously multiple Grand Prix winners world champions. And actually, he was so even in 1970, I think it was he was still prized by Ferrari and sports cars. There was one race at Monza, where there were three 5 one twos against an arm on 7s, which there was left with one Pedro rigas in the gulf 9 one 7. And for I moved aiming around the chasing cars. To try and get one of them in range because he was the quickest driver. So he was he was the Ferrari Lee drive at a time when there was some pretty handy for Ali drives around. So yeah,

"Ian, you're going to be assessing Kev's reasoning and logic, disagreeing with his choices. And then as we go, we'll assess the drivers that didn't quite make the cut. So starting off at number ten, we've got Peter gethin, race for BRM between 1971 and 1973, started 23 races. That's 15 in the world championship 8 non championship took two wins. Again, one in the world championship and one non championship race. So Kev, why is gathering for you at number ten? So it's quite difficult, number ten is always one of the more tricky ones because who you leave out. The main criteria, you've got to wait up really is the impact at the team, obviously, is one that we look at success scored is now the longevity, which can work both ways, of course. You want to be a team for a long time contributing, but obviously if you don't succeed, then that's not great, second work in either department. And I'll be honest, I'm sure we'll jump in with alternatives here, but I won't forget him because he did win the 1971 Italian Grand Prix. And not only was it a victory for BRM, but it's a very significant race in world championship history, very famous one. It was then record average speed of a 150.76 miles an hour, which stood for, I think, over 32 years. I think it was broken in 2003. And I would say that it's still the closest F one world championship race in history. The only time them to a hundred stay instead of thousands. So you could have a debate about a couple of other races as well. But I think the fact that .61 seconds covers the top 5. I think it would make it would make it the closest. I guess the rest of the time, BRM, he's there at the wrong moment, really, he arrives towards the end of 71. And they've already lost Pedro Rodriguez and they're about to lose Joseph he has actually killed in the other race that get in one a brand's hatch. I wouldn't put too much significance on that because he was a shortened race and a very dark day for BRM, but he stayed with him. Didn't really achieve an awful lot more after that. But he makes in ahead of some other drivers that we could have at ten, which I'm sure Ian will mention in a moment because he did achieve something, whereas I think some of the others that had longer be our increase, they didn't quite get the job done. So yeah, he just squeaks in at ten for me. Class of the function of a driver in BRM it will proceed to me inspiring team spirits. If they had a positive effect on the team, sometimes it's why their results sometimes it was by their personality. Sometimes the number of years they've been there had a part to play in as well. But I don't really take issue. I mean, there are a number of drivers as you say, Kevin, who could be in the top ten. At ten night four tenth. And Peter gas in savage's career really informed one. He was a very, very good driver. He was the formula 5000 champion. UK champion, the first two years in the British championship, driving for driving the McLaren, he started his Formula One career with McLaren, but it was going nowhere. I don't think he saw eye to eye with teddy Mayer. He ran McDowell in those days. And so he was the beneficiary of a tragedy because he was the replacement for Pedro Rodriguez, who had lost his life a few months earlier. And he was brought into the BRM team. And he was a good old cliche. He hit the ground running because at Monza, he disregarded rev limits, Tony south case, and said, don't go over 1103 or something like that. And he went up to 12. It was a beautiful description of it. If I could mention a journalist who doesn't like really falters for Dennis Jacobson about it was the old club racing British scrapping on brands hatch short circuit that came to the fore when he was struggling for the lead, the final corner of the parabolic or on the last lap. In the slipstream in clump of cars, 5 or 6 cars. Heading to the finish. And he held on to the beyond the left red limit, the engine held together. And he picked Ronnie Peterson by virtually nothing at all. It was a great boost and then on the back of that. They went to the victory race post the end of the world championship season at brown's fetch. Joseph had qualified on pole position and Peter was, I think, next to him. Certainly both on the front row and the BRM. So it's just a potent the BRM was at that time. And they found reliability as well. And he went off into the lead. We'll come to the Joseph at accident. That's a very later on. So he's later in the list to give a little secret away. So we'll talk about Joseph a later and the circumstances of the accident. But the fact is that at the time the race had to be stopped because of the accident, Peter was leading. Subsequently, of course, he won. What was essentially a Formula One race with formula 5000 participation, the race of champions at brands hatch in 1973. With the Chevron formula 5000 car. So very good driver without jamming the fake praise. I think he's as good as any to be sent. Yeah. Well, let's come on to a driver who did get a very significant result for BRM and number 9. It's Joe bonier gave beeram its first F one world championship win in the 1959 Dutch Grand Prix at zandvoort. He raced for the team between 1958 and 1960, started 24 AC, that's 17 in the world championship and 7 outside it. His only victory for the team was that race at zandvoort. So Kev, why is Bon at number 9? So initially he was higher on the list because of the significance of that win. But if you look beyond that, there's not a, I don't think he was an absolute top performer of the day. You wouldn't have had him in division one of your driver list, I don't think. And yeah, he probably didn't drive the team and inspire the team in a way that some of the drivers that we'll get to higher up on this list are. However, it was a major day in BRM history. Take that finally take that first world championship victory more than a decade since the project had started. BRM had done a lot of testing because and what they all seem to go quite well there anyway. And he was in the mix all day. He was probably a little bit fortunate to win in the end because I suspect Sterling moss would have beaten him in the end with the Cooper. Had he not had transmission problems, but bond yield had asked one of his day of days if you like, it was always up near the up near the front and he got that victory, which meant an awful lot to Raymond Mays and the team. I think there is almost quite believe it, but they finally got that result. He was outpaced subsequently by Graham hill and Dan gurney, which I don't think you would
