"But it's just sort of this doomed feeling of like if I roll up and open my eyes on opening day 2022 and Aaron boons in the dugout and Gary Sanchez is a starting catcher, although Kyle has actually but if Gary Sanchez is the presumptive everyday starter, I'm supposed to play a 130 games. That's when it starts to really feel like a Groundhog Day situation. And I think a lot of people were so there was irrational Gary Sanchez backlash because his defense suffered in 2017 as he was awesome in 2018 when his bat started to wilt a little bit. People were like, man, the defense, and it was just this annoying loud backlash that was definitely too early. Players struggle. Players get better, 2018, he hits a massive postseason home runs against the Red Sox. You know, annoying year for sure, but you could live with Gary Sanchez's 2018 season whatever. Yeah. But the backlash started too early. And so then the backlash to the backlash began and people started dogmatically defending Gary Sanchez at every turn. Then he had an all star first half to prove those people right, then he had the worst 2020 you've ever seen that proved all the annoying angry people, right. And then you have warring factions of the Yankees fan base. Going back and forth talking about how Gary is perfect, no Gary is dreadful. Gary is the best hitter on the team, no Gary is unplayable. And they're the truth is somewhere in between, but it's just a cursed existence. And the defense keeps getting worse as the bat keeps getting worse. I don't think enough people are talking about the effect of having a different catching coach in a different catching style every year. Being almost the same as laboratory. Like we've agreed now laboratories is not a shortstop because we've seen what the bat can do with second base, and he played better already as soon as you alleviate the shortstop concerns. I don't understand why the Gary Sanchez conversation isn't the same thing. Like maybe we don't need to hire new people to revamp his stance every year. Maybe we accept the defense's average to a little bit below average instead of constantly trying to mess around a range of ceiling. His arm's not as good as it used to be. No. So I think you can win a title with Gary Sanders, just like I think you can win a title with Aaron Boone, but it just starts to feel a little stale after a while, especially when there is such a lightning rod flashpoint. And so I understand keeping Gary sages over the other options, but I just roll my eyes a little bit, knowing now that it kind of feels like I'm gonna wake up on opening day and still be thinking about Gary Sanchez and still be thinking about Aaron boot. Yeah, and that's what they have to fix. They have to determine that they have to, is it Gerrit Cole forcing this? Or is it the Yankees coaching staff being like, he can't catch him? Because that's ridiculous. Like the first we have on ace who can't..

"Podcast. I'm at a minor ball alongside Thomas Karen ante and I just checked to make sure there are four division series going on on Friday, the Yankees are in zero of them. So very interesting. We're gonna move along from that and continue to the post mortem. Who's got to go? Who might stay? Why the New York media is prepare you for Aaron Boone's return doesn't it feel like it? Why there hasn't been a Brian cashman boon press conference of any kind since Boone said that teams are closing the gap in the immediate aftermath of the wild card loss, gap closed. We'll talk about the postseason games that have occurred. But let's also address some articles that we wrote that we think are irrelevant for this context. Off season moves. Clearly made in the context of the World Series run that never happened. And Gerrit Cole getting harassed in the Boston bullpen wheel address it. I'm sure we can all come to an agreement on this. Folks make sure to find us on Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts, drop us a 5 serve you along with a mailbag question will be more than happy to answer and I'm getting a little bored with the spiel clearly. I'm over and I'm going through the motions like the Yankees at the end of the 2021 regular season and postseason. But believe me, I'm gonna buck up for the rest of the podcast. Thomas Garrett, welcome to the pod. Interesting Thursday, great Friday coming up in the game of baseball. We are not participating. And the Yankees front office is doing their best not to butt in on the action that's currently occurring. We haven't heard a PEEP from them since Tuesday night. No, and that should have been there, what tenth time addressing the public for their team sucking for reasons that can not be explained. Would have liked to have heard from somebody, I don't know why there hasn't been more speculation that boon is gone. It feels like he's coming back. I don't know for how long I don't know. I don't know what this scenario might be. Once again, I think our biggest fears might be coming to life where they just might run this back for 2022 and see what happens. You know, one of the things that kind of struck me also was judges postgame comments. I know we briefly touched on this last time. Said he wanted to be a Yankee for life, but then said that contracts and trades are out of his control, so we'll.

"But our concern about what's going on with Eric hole right now given the circumstances because this is the guy that's got to get us to the next step. And I just don't know how we'll put it this way. The bullpen better be all hands on deck for that day. The freaking bullpen, I do want to talk about this to the thing with Gerrit Cole, frankly, is obviously he's had struggles for a while now, whether it's the hamstring, whether it's mental, whether it's fatigue, whatnot. I'm glad it is Garrett Cole struggling and not some flash in the pan like Robbie ray struggling at the tail end of the season, trying to get it together. Because if it were, let's say Nestor Cortez junior is getting bombed all September. I love him. I love the story. I love what he's giving us. But I definitely don't have full faith in a mental checkbook to be like, masters got October. He's been good his whole career in October. Like there's no, you know, I've got nothing to reference. Cole I know is Derek Cole. Nothing changes that you can't say that losing his substances ruined his season, potentially, it's messing with his mind a little bit now. It's probably something that's in the back of his head at all times. But his numbers since the sticky substance band, he's up to like a 4.15 ERA or something, but he's up to he's past 6 in September because of whatever else is bug him. So you take that out and there's really, you know, hasn't been that large a cause and effect since that moment outside of just a couple rough starts. He hasn't been perfect this year. I would be, I don't think he deserves to be the same. If you like garrick's had a great year with a couple of really brutal public stinkers..

"They're 7 and 15 since the 13 game winning streak guys literally unheard of. It's the worst record in the AL tied with the Orioles. So that's why that's why it's come to the point where your ace and best pitcher is getting is, I guess optically getting booed. Like I said, I don't think Gerrit Cole is getting booted. I just think the shitty performance by the Yankees as a whole is getting booed and everybody is falling under that umbrella. But that's my take on it. It's because everybody knows these 6 games coming up against the Blue Jays and the Red Sox are not going to go the way anybody is hoping that they do. They're just not. And I mean, sure, there's a possibility that they do fall in the Yankees favor. There's a possibility. There is a possibility just because there is never a 100% chance of anything. That's the only reason I'm saying it. You can simply not rule anything out in life because it's weird and because unforeseen things happen. But everybody knows what's probably going to happen because like we talked about, the Yankees after this oriole series are 30 and 37 against divisional opponents. They are not going to make the playoffs because they can not face the teams that they're that they should be well equipped to play. What is it 74 times 76 times a year? 19 times four, math, I don't know. Oh boy. So yeah, 76 times a year. So you have 76 games against opponents. You should basically know and have a blueprint to defeat. And the difference is gonna once again come down to 1180 against the Orioles and having losing record records against the Red Sox and the Blue Jays. Teams you are directly competing. I'm not even I don't even care about the rays, dude. The rays, the rays have already punked us for how many years now it's just the way it's going to be until the Yankees decide they want to flip that narrative, which to me, it doesn't seem like they want to. But yeah, it's going to come down to just not being able to beat divisional opponents and nothing until this point has told us that they are going to do it, especially when their backs are against the wall because once again, the team hasn't really proved anything to us when they're backs are against the wall. Mostly a 500 team outside of an epic August run. That's what we talked about last week. And that's why fans are billing because they see the road ahead and it's not looking good. Yeah, you want to get angry at the Red Sox were facing the Orioles down the stretch, of course you do. I do too. I don't like the Red Sox facing the Orioles down the stretch. But the Yankees face the aerial 6 times in the last two weeks too. It's just too slightly different weeks and we went three and three against him..
Judge Starts 5-HR Barrage to Back Cole, Yanks Beat Orioles 7-2
"The Yankees at five home runs on the night to back to pitching of Gerrit Cole as they beat the Orioles seven to two Aaron judge and Giancarlo Stanton each belted two run homers Luke voit Joey Gallo and DJ lemay you hit solo shots three of the homers came off starter and loser Alexander wells Cole allowed one run on four hits over five innings and struck out seven to improve to fifteen and seven with the win the Yankees keep pace in a very close wildcard race in the American League Craig heist Baltimore
Will He Ever Heat Up? Diagnosing Joey Gallo's Skid Since the Trade
"The goal here with Gallo was to lengthen the lineup and diversify the lineup. Left handed bat, he gives tough at bats and he's able to give protection to other guys in the lineup. Perhaps, I mean, it not perhaps. It is certainly paved the way for John Carlos Stanton Luke Voight and Aaron judge to be on the hot treats that they are on right now. And we're thankful for that. But a lot of fans have been sitting here saying, oh, dude, when Joey Gallo heats up, forget about it. Forget about it. This team's gonna be unstoppable. But we have no evidence of him heating up. So Anthony Rizzo heated up right upon his arrival in The Bronx. Made his statement. Singlehandedly, I will go out and say single handedly won that series against one that series sweep against the Marlins. Was it colossal reason for that? That kick started the Yankees incredible run throughout the month of August. But Joey Gallo has yet to really come on. I know we have that go ahead home run against the Mariners. That was an awesome moment to signature Yankee moments since coming over on the trade. But since then, he's grounded into three double plays. In four games, he didn't three double plays before, so it was Saturday Sunday Monday and Tuesday. Over the course of those four games, he grounded into three double plays. He grounded into three double plays in his previous 95 games with the rangers. What how does this how does this even happen? Before that, he grounded into 8 double plays in his previous 346 games. So bad luck, sure, but like, what? When is this gonna stop? So my question is and my doomsday question because I love asking these because I like seeing people freak out. This is just how my brain operates guys. When do we start worrying about this

"Man. Garrett Cole was sent to the mound on Wednesday night to face the Los Angeles angels to avoid the series sweep. How many times does this come? How many times is Garrett Cole been asked to stop the bleeding? How many times did it happen? How many times it hasn't happened? Have there been concerns about girls and ace? I know I've had them. Call me a psycho, but I've had them when the Yankees sign up to a 9 year or $324 million contract. I just wasn't sure. He had a shaky kind of go in Pittsburgh. I know it's Pittsburgh, so you can't really you can't really take that too seriously, but then he heads to Houston. And look, I'll talk about it. We had the whole allegations of the doctoring baseballs in Houston, and then Gerrit Cole, all of a sudden becomes one of the arguably at top three picture in baseball. If Justin Verlander's on on his team or Justin Verlander doesn't exist, he at least wins a Cy Young award while he's there. Led the league in strikeouts in 2019 with 326. So did it feel like at the time the Yankees were maybe getting hosed and free agency by paying him $36 million a year, which was by far the highest paid starting pitcher in the history of baseball, I don't know. Obviously not now, but at the time, it was a worthwhile question. Why can't we have doubts? Why can't we have questions? I know it was great. A lot of fans just didn't even care. They were like, we're getting an ace or we're getting an ace like pitcher, haven't had this since the turn of the decade with CC Sabathia. It doesn't matter. We just need a guy who can pump. We need a guy who can give us length. We need a power pitcher, bring it on. Everyone was happy. A lot of people were happy. I was happy. I just had some doubts. And you know what? Gary Cole is silenced all of those doubts. And last night was probably the the obviously the latest, but it was the most refreshing evidence yet. 15 strikeout performance 7 innings one.

I think i'm losing my mind doors. That's a problem with these like whenever we're on long streams i feel like i lose my myself this the other. Two games in the series didn't go well. I will say the fact that we're like. It wasn't a good series if the coal game happens monday and then the kluber haney game. That's what i'm saying is matters what game you went. Recency bias ministers. Yeah it was also the last of a west coast trip. That flight back morales a little higher now as cold as did that. And you know the offense came through. Although i think it was brian rappaport on twitter. Made it made it suggestions like supposed to fly home tonight right because this is actually. This is a late afternoon. Game in la. It's only seven forty nine there. Do you fly home in this. Can you even home this newark right like newark school. So he was like vegas okay. Maybe let's avoid that but like signed. La boys for back tomorrow day off. We're just gonna the sleep and fly back in the morning. go nuts. avenue. I stay at brent alpha club the like la right. I'm pretty far. Yeah right so you can find a nice spot. Costa mesa's where they stay for my so beautiful outdoor mall right by their hotel. You should go there mesa okay. No that's where they stay. I'm telling you talking hotel won't give away the exact hotel given up an okay so monday. Corey kluber turn. He was really good to start striking out. Tiny twice. I think he twice he was solid. And then all of a sudden came part and that fourth-inning after it was after otani struck actually and the angels got a fucking grand slam by the fact that the first two games or this started that game alone one lagaras. And what what is his name. Mayfield jimmy feel jack mayfield. You can't have jack mayfield and one lagaras beat you like that. And i think they had six hundred is in. That game is can't do that no longer. Gars i've always thought he's better than mets fans gave him credit for. Come on three or four to rbi's come in kluber star of the game. I was like oh my god. Kluber is back. He's the number two seven or eight first pitch strikes to start the game he was he was kluber. He was on but i mean look we. You didn't expect him to come back and throw another no hitter. He showed enough where like the stuff is obviously still there. I mean he tailed off a little bit but he'll build stamina backup. I think by the time the playoffs come around. They'll be looking real solid. He said he'll he's taking it like he sees the results aren't good in all fell apart there but like he was encouraged by what he was able to bring their. Which i hear to an extent and like you know you want results. I did did say there's gonna be a few starts of like you know we. We can't afford it but we need to like ease up our expectations. Here what kluber gonna give to us. Through seventy sixty eight pitches. Their four innings five hits five runs a to walk six strikeouts to walks nice limit. Those six it's got some swings and misses but it all came part and who follows him after they pick up kluber kluber leaves the game five two and then all of a sudden the yankee string together a two hour rally here with mayhew judge stan stan continues ripped blah veasley as a judge five five coopers off the hook here we bring in bomb the fifth danger haney why are we what are we doing. What are we look. You realize that point okay kubrick before you love to give them five or six sure but it's a tie ballgame. You need to win that game at the time. You're still in losing streak. It's not four to going like andrew. Any immediately gives up a home run. The show itani on the easiest. Pitch doubt was truly the most predictable thing in the history of sports. But what are we doing to fit to leave him the roster that i don't get it oh we can't move him he's at the. Dfa god forbid your da. Andrew can there so many in you. Now have five starters. That are better than him. You have louis. He'll who could come up and be better. given up. how many runs statman zero zero six people that could come up. That could be in the tation over. Andrew heaney clark schmidt is coming back update from him. There's no excuse tavender any ever. The only excuse there was where it's like all right. It's connor small sample. "Came in today with a negative two hundred and thirty three run differential. It's unbelievable impossible to be. That bad abass won't all gets race seriously. Now at all having paul fry paul falcon for all fry. Never the orioles forty two and a half games but it's unbelievable incredible already. Two and a half months play leo. Worst how a week to the mathematically eliminated. They're mad they're already are wait a minute it for sure. The definitely are forty. Two games left. Tj i didn't you tell me that was i mean. The rays have eighty four. Wins right now. The orioles of ninety one losses so the most games oils can win at seventy one. Let me you that. There are about to be mathematically eliminated from being even fourth-placed because the blue jays seventy timber scheduled for the orioles real quick at yankee stadium then four against kansas city four against the blue jays three more against the yankees at boston for three at the phillies for three texas for four boston for three toronto for three. I mean they were five of those games. We've six more times six times. What is the law nice. Sorry what is the biggest game back between a first place in last place team. That could ever. Yeah i got. This is going to be at least fifty tigers. Maybe they've tag arrived year. We're team on like forty to forty five games but that still means the first place team has to be really good while that right right and this is this year. I think the are heading tonight. One hundred and five win pace sound like that. No no no no no. Because they're at six thirty two the probably in like one hundred one issue and whatever we talk about the orioles schedule the yankees schedule now that they finished out west thank god or toma that west And we'll talk about the first two games and a little bit here but now they're in an opportunity where they're healthy you can. You're gonna call up to more guys called up kripke. Why why but the called christie and foil today as twenty seven twenty eight th people you can fluctuate that with. Maybe you see louise hill up here in a little bit hopefully But this is their upcoming schedule. So you got three stadium against the orioles lined up with nestor montgomery and kluber than a big series. Although we talked with is not as we thought. Toronto would be better than they've fallen off a little for sure. But i'm not overlooking them in the four games can change a lot here but Four more at the stadium against toronto. Three at the mets. That's the september eleventh series. Which that saturday nights can be a crazy game. They're doing the whole twentieth anniversary. that'd be nuts Then gets minnesota recently just got cancelled then three at baltimore home. The cleveland three home the texas for three. That's a stretch from september. Third to twenty second. You gotta like murder teams. These are not good teams. You're playing the mets. Are i mean tearing each other apart. Limb by limb the orioles. You've got six games against them in their three against the indians three against the rangers. You've gotta be those teams. You gotta beat up good after they do. That's how many but at the same the yankees. They're now at a point where they don't need to go on this unreal tear though but i wanna put separation between us and the ritz. Yeah they. I don't want that final. I wanna i wanna comfortably have the first while their final nine are at boston at toronto. Want those nine games to like matter. I wanted me up like they've will extend boston to that. Yes this is a twenty game stretch. You gotta go fourteen no less than fourteen in my mind. You can't loose. I think if i met my math correct so three baltimore three one four. Toronto say three their rate at the mets for three. We'll say they win two out of three. That's eight into the game against minnesota at the stadium and monday. Two o'clock game into three at baltimore. Sweep twelve and two home. Against cleveland for three. Let's say two out of three just fourteen and then home against taxes for three. I do want to bring up real fast. It's twenty games right like we're talking about the orioles about how like the orioles are just so bad. But they're just bad right like the mets. I've i've not kidding like they're bad but i've never seen some so much crazy shit happened one season to a dui today was like sorry for the course for what's happened but it's like even like harvey by they win. They're all looking on the field for his jewel like his fucking or whatever just like random shit that happens. Is steve loan changed. It's amazing house book and bad. Why he's coming home now. I know seven hour different. But he's coming home from steve. Cohen's for razors now. I don't care. Players and coaches were at op. Steve cohen's mentioned for a fundraiser night. Maybe like a team. Bonding i post like the boeing thing. Well then zach. Scott scott says right exactly yeah. He's found sleeping in his car. Did you see by the way tommy. You saw this. Did you see jeff. "gerrit cole" Discussed on FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball
"That's that'd be wild. Imagine adding those guys like trade that you can make right exactly not having to give up any assets either. They're getting the talent fusion back. Just just bring back to superstar potential players. Oh that's pretty cool. Yeah so you know again. I don't think he's changing the landscape of my team. But i think he's a solid contributor right now and even if it does start to fade the playing time a little bit down the road. I've gotten some health back or or found some other guys. But i think at least in the short term i. I really like him. But i did get him at somebody. I think can be there for the rest of the year just because the plate skills. I'm hoping he can. He can perform his way into more of that. Share that you're talking about. I think gavin sheets has better skills than all the guys. You name there with goodwin angle larry garcia billy hamilton. So hopefully that shines for him and he's able to keep that plane time going. Mike is mike fulton and people remember he is at one. Point was a really interesting to pitcher He's got four pitches now. In each recently changed the grip. On his slider and curveball. In it's been helping quite a bit over the last three starts. He's got three sixty. Ira the walks are down only to walks in twenty innings. That's huge for lengthy for him. It is huge. I mean he's getting to pitch in. Texas is once he stay in texas in. You know in that amazing place to pitch. That's ugly on the outside but beautiful on the inside. I really like him. And i streamed him last week of for the oakland and in seattle starts. I'm happy with what i got from him. I don't know if i in some of my weekly leagues. i them out this week in some. I didn't just because he got. He's got oakland again for the third time that's right right. Yeah and then just that scares out of me understandably in some ways. I didn't have a choice. So you know in my mid event. Like i said i didn't have. I didn't have many options to your way for the schedule. The break did nuts. So i'm open. He doesn't like get crushed. Being seen the third time in you know two weeks but i really like what fulton average is doing and i think he is especially your deeper leagues is someone people should take a look at As a kind of a team stream room for it. Yeah i think so too on faulty and Just throw an ad on guy who was picked up a lot this week off. Their team is colby. Allard was pitching well and he was fine against the tigers for his first start. He's also been pitching while. I think both of them could be around and i don't know that either them is necessarily going to be. I mean our twenty. Three's not getting traded but even faulty at twenty nine. We'll see maybe if he runs this this week and then out of the break pitching well and generate some. But i don't know that it would be enough for them to want to trade him. So i think he'll stick around in texas and just keep starting every fifth day as well there so the they got a few guys in addition to all star kyle gibson. Boom a well done man. He's awesome. he's awesome one. Nine eighty are a one four whip. He's been incredible. There are no two ways around it. You would think the combination of cedric moans. And kyle gibson have me in first place in every one of my leads legs right now. Maybe a few and listen far far. Be it for me to just go around and back patting us to aggressively. But i will say there were two guys that you know if you listen to the show in the off season probably likely to have these guys on more teams than not based off our promotion of them if you if you liked what we were saying. And that's cedric moans. Jared walsh and they're both all stars. So i felt pretty good about that. You know we don't get anything right. I know that for sure. But you know when you put when you plant your flag and it's on a couple of guys that are mid late round guys. I mean mullins was dirt cheap. Walsh had some juice but he was still very affordable as well and they both make the all star team. I felt pretty good about that. So a little kudos to us on the all star break there if i can be so bold as to As to brag a little bit and then throw in your kyle gibson love as well and you know we got. We got small stars out there. So yeah. I mean a little bit right just a little a little bit of bragging again. We got plenty. We got plenty of stuff wrong that we can get hammered on so we'll take a little a little love here and there but yeah mullins is fourth in the outfield are you. Are you kidding. Me between nicosia annalisa jd..
Red Sox hammer Cole, rout Yanks 9-2 for another 3-game sweep
"The red Sox remained perfect against the Yankees this season following a nine to route of their arch rivals Kiki Hernandez and Rafael Devers homered in a four run first off Gerrit Cole helping Boston improved to six in overseas New York JD Martinez and Christian Vazquez also went deep for the both facts who outscored the Yankees eighteen seven in the three game sweep Eduardo Rodriguez was solid and earning his first win in nine starts allowing a two run Homer by Aaron judge pushes for other hits over six innings doctor was going to just four runs is my my was just go out there and puts you on the board you know Mendes our system to be dazzled thinking all the time we score runs we gotta go out there and puts you on the ball the call was tagged for five earned runs in as many innings I'm Dave Ferrie
Yankees’ Gerrit Cole Makes Plea to MLB Over Pitching With Foreign Substances
"For the Yankees yesterday. Yankees going to win yesterday. But Cole came out after the game and again said Hey, man, like I It's a really tough time gripping the baseball. I talked to Kevin Frandsen yesterday and he gave that old that old, uh, sort of analogy that feels like hold the cue ball like a pool. Cuba, especially When the weather is cold like that, so we'll hear from Gerrit Cole. He had some comments about what went down yesterday. He's pleading with Major league baseball to just talk to us because I understand you got a police it but just talk to us. He goes. You can police it and we can make sure guys aren't getting hurt. Be it hitters or pitchers making sure guys aren't having to change things right in the middle of the season that, he says. We've been living in this gray area, and now now he's sounding a little bit more reasonable considering What we heard from him A couple of weeks ago when he was asked about whether or not he uses Spider attack or use the sticky substances that he was put on the spot. He's not not not blaming anybody. Or, or, uh, it's not saying that that the guys aren't doing anything. We lived in this ray area for so long, And now you've you've clamped down so hard that there's an immediate change, and it's totally impacting the way the game is going to be playing baseball saying Well, it was impacting the the way the game was played the other way. So I think the feeling is there has to be some middle ground anyway. We can get back
Yarbrough Gets Rays 1st Complete Game in 5 Years, Tops Yanks
"Ryan Yarbrough tossed the race first complete game in more than five years leading a nine two rather the Yankees Yarborough hadn't won a start since August two thousand nineteen serving as an opener much of that time he scattered six hits while fanning six with no walks helping the AL east leaders move for a half game ahead of New York Austin meadows homered and drove in five is Tampa Bay improved to ten and three in the Bronx since the start of last season meadows homered three times in the series Gerrit Cole was tagged for five runs over five innings the Yankees have now lost seven of their last ten I'm Dave very
Cole Strikes out 12 in Eight Innings, Yankees Beat Rays 1-0
"Gerrit Cole is five and one after striking out twelve while holding the race to four hits over eight stellar innings of the Yankees won nothing victory Aaron Hicks hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Aaron judge had three of New York six hits call already has five starts this season with at least ten strikeouts and no walks breaking might be seen as T. mark set in two thousand one he's given up just three walks all season there will be a walk on at some point but just try to stay on the offensive there and we'll put ourselves in a good position to not have to have to have to be there quite as much Aroldis Chapman completed a four hitter for his ninth save the Yankees over consecutive wins over Tampa Bay for the first time since July two thousand nineteen I'm Dave Ferrie
Altuve's birthday HR answers boos, Astros top Torres, Yanks
"Jose out to they gave himself a thirty first birthday present by slamming a go ahead three run Homer in the eighth inning of the Astros seven four win over the Yankees Chad green inherited a three two lead starting the eighth inning before putting the first two runners on base out to base blast helped the Astros avoid a three game sweep your Donna Alvarez hit a pair of solo homers off Yankees starter Gerrit Cole and Martino but Otto added a two run blast tonight Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres scored from first base on an infield single but new York's five game winning streak ended I'm the ferry
"gerrit cole" Discussed on WFAN Sports Radio_FM
"The Yankees tried to be they were cutting edge with that they were one of the one of the first things to really stack that bull pen with a bunch of clothes is you know to have three or four closer ties to that open now you see the worth of the Gerrit Cole you see the worth of a Stephen Strasburg and you see these guys are going to be able to take the ball and takes longer in two games for you so I I think we might see a little bit more of an emphasis on that personally I I'd like to see that because I think that's a big part about baseball people like to watch those marquee match ups no they like to see the cold verse to ground gains the subway series they like to see those big names it's always been about that and I know what the analytics and we've got in this value of course in playing that match up and having a great old pen and using as many really was as possible but again for the sport and you want to see the attention on the sport you want the you know the people start liking those marquee match ups again that's what I'd like to see it come back to a little bit yeah and and you you and I would agree I'm sure that the divergence between regular season baseball in post season baseball has never been greater really and and the way you can play in the in the regular season with that mix and match works fine Tampa's done great with it obviously the Yankees one hundred games two years are over that but then you get to the post season and maybe your thoughts are much more along the lines of what you just mentioned where you'd much rather get seven to eight innings out of your starter you don't want to have to mix and match in and do it again the next night in and do it again the next night against the same team by the way it it definitely is a a big divergence now in today's baseball between how you play the regular year and how you play the post season yeah I mean when you when you go into the playoffs crescent and like you touched on was yeah if you want to keep using relievers like that one you raise a great point where in those papers here you see the same guys over and over again you know that familiarity becomes a problem in two we use all those pictures in the same game like that it's a lot of moving parts yeah it becomes it becomes in all its thing at that point if one of those guys doesn't have a one night then he's a weak link in the chain and the chain break so loosely seen it happen a lot as good as those relievers are during the regular season and there's a lock down if they can be you know October they can cause you problems I think the Yankees you've seen a little bit of that you know the office is kind of a quiet in October which is hurt them but yeah I I think we have a lot of those moving pieces all it takes is one four four eight one to break and then the game goes down hill yeah because a lot of more one get one run games one you know right one Adam Levine pitch in the wrong spot and you don't have enough offense to come back for the beach you're a little bit with their guy so it it's definitely fascinating overall as we said pretty good all season in baseball I think that there's you know a good vibe around the game right now for the most part how it what are you hearing or or where do you expect the Astros thing to go in terms of timing what's your gas water the other guys saying what do you what do you believe about the Astros and the way the jurisprudence will play out I think it was fascinated Christy here at manta for talk about it that the winter meetings when he came out and said that they were going through seventy five thousand emails and I mean that the sheer volume of things they were doing here and of course they want that to be out there because they want to show how they're doing their due diligence to get through this and to make sure you know the dotting the I's and crossing the T.'s in this investigation so they want to be as thorough as possible I expecting to come down extremely hard on the Astros no we have to be talking about draft punishment certainly suspensions whether it's to to both change and women know which wouldn't be surprising it would surprise me however Chris to see guys like core Intel trance to spend it I need to see and they'll be taken the extraordinary step of axes suspending other teams managers yeah for infractions they made with the Astros I'm not saying it's off the table but that would really surprise me if if that entered into the equation yeah trying to figure out where they'll draw the line is where the the real drama and intrigue is as as to where the line is drawn and you know because no one cares how much they get fined and and bright you want I think yes draft picks are huge for teens now yes you know that their their franchise differences and that really hurts them and the suspensions as well I mean he just is a very good manager obviously are significant suspensions to hand in Louisville to sell it's going to be interesting to see you know powerhouse franchise like the Astros to see where this leads them and to see the competition for the Yankees almost kind of fall by the wayside this year you know with the red Sox not you know talking about cutting payroll the Astros facing stiff penalties you know not only of the Yankees geared up for a huge year financially adding Cole here you know some of the biggest opponents in Arkansas are gonna be up to snuff made what do you expect to happen with the Frasier and talk men and some of the key fringe players a day in all the the the perfect problem to have for a team you don't wanna lose them because you really respect them but you don't have enough opportunity to play them what would expect will happen I mean it it it's clear how much that the Yankees front office like talk man obviously I mean even when he was struggling when he first came over they stuck with him and turned into a pretty good player idea that she is a big contributor based on the injuries they had to their field so yeah I mean I think he's going to be a valuable piece for them is far as fitting on the roster Fraser is a guy I mean I it's surprising unity still on the team now you know it's part of the organization I would have thought they would've found a deal for him that they would have like and it's his struggles of gone on to be he becomes harder to trade so I just don't obviously I have not been it not alone in saying this were hardly breaking news but it's really hard to see him with any type of extended future with your organization just the way it's gone for him since he's been there things can change obviously but I do I expect and like I have been in like many people have for him to be put in some kind of deal for a need just hasn't happened yet couple quick words on don Smith and Jay Dee Davis forty expect their futures yeah Tom Smith is another guy that I expected the Mets to put in a a trade by now I wish he'd become a fan favorite you know that the Mets are cognizant of having a valuable chip on their team in there you know I think they can be in in Brody's case who hasn't been a GM for a long time you get nervous about making the right trade but somebody like that you worried about is you need to trade don Smith is almost the something happened Alonso right and then you're already regretting not having him around so dumb really just doesn't kind of fit on this team you no longer with the guy that plays every game obviously but as far as the outfield goes you know I think that's a spot for Katie Davis I mean I I I really think is not is not good defensively at third and I think left field is kind of a spot for him I think McNeil becomes your third baseman and and the way they're currently aligned and movie that's listed as with them what what happens with them another got it's very difficult to train especially for a first yeah I'm coming in and it was under a mandate to get rid of money look it's gonna make probably twenty eight million arbitration this year that's a big hit I think he stays on the red Sox to start the year I know there's been some speculation on Twitter seem traded that's a really difficult trade to make in and I would expect him to to start the year with the red Sox great conversation happy new year to you we'll talk again soon thanks so much thanks there you go they let a Newsday we will take some baseball calls when we come back Chris more.

"Did the Yankees due to get their man Gerrit Cole as if the nine year three hundred twenty four million dollar contract wasn't enough they brought along Andy Pettitte for their meeting California which we talked about who's a former asters Yankees pitcher that thirty pound contraption thing that we talked about last night begin keys clubhouse manager Lou cook cook cook sack played unsuspecting role the Paisano kuta definitely seal the deal for the Yankees in call because Kerr call once told him about a trip he took with his wife to feed and say Italy and a meal that they had there that included a bottle of this wine when he's manager Arent Boone walked into the room for the meaning of call he was carrying to the Cole was for close it when I came home I was telling my wife Amy how that did they pull that off not many people in the world know that that's my favorite wine I lay my head down eleven thirty that night and didn't sleep much in case you're wondering the bottle is a two thousand for my exacto firm organ and I yet bull Getty in the region of Toscana and I was interested in trying it and so I looked up and found that it cost nine hundred dollars and it's actually sold out I guess that's the gear call effect but you can try different vintage for a cool one thousand two hundred seventy six dollars per bottle I would be absolutely flattered to fire Gerrit Cole it sounds like the wind sealed the deal as soon as we walked in I wonder if they cracked open the bottles right then and there next time Scarborough's has big time client that might be tank is interest is definitely gonna be able to gauge how interested they are by the show that they put on to that player after having seen the Kerr call show there are fifty one days into pitchers and catchers everybody let's see the calls everything's on table eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six I'm the I'm a card on the fan he is mark ability yeah the.

"At you just saw with with the trial got we gonna look for other outfielders another position players in the money they get more than you get a look at his own teammate as a pitcher as the markets are different he's gonna get more than Gerrit Cole dot I mean theoretically could if they if even if he gets the free agency and continues to play like this if labor Taurus continues like this and wins in MVP and is this great young player hits free agency twenty seven he's gonna get more money than Gerrit Cole which is you know obscene and crazy to think about but it's true a squeeze one more in before the top of the hour Gus said items going on Gus I wanted a quick comment on goes out every if the Yankees but they would still would reject the chips in the eight years that is yes we worked every time absolutely right the only made that the money that you know there's no problem there were people fight about the salary if they bring a couple jobs jobs is what everybody absolutely absolutely right because you're a hundred percent right if he if they win a couple championship since contract it's a hundred it's worth it now figure out the back end eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six two hours down to have to go Paul tone thank you guys very much I appreciate it thank you SO two AM when people because he will come your way was still taking your Yankee calls we have to do some football is now going to be football Sunday so gonna have to talk giants and dolphins and Eli possibly most likely last home game last chance for you fans to see him in in the building Jenkins story Ingram not on the field again I want to get to that because I think the giants really have to think about whether they you know one of an incriminating you should because you know might not be his fault but this is never on the field so we got a lot to get to the last two hours go around the league on this week fourteen so much more.

"It's a big money moves as you know Gerrit Cole Brett Gardner we've talked about the pros and cons of both of them so far tonight the Mets are are making their own money moves he Google they Carty be make some money moves but the Mets in a different sense the Mets are making you know type deals they got reports on a one year deal for ten million imp goods and bads I mean he was really bad and in the two thousand nineteen respected control made at least thirty two starts in a row I mean it thirty two starts four seasons in a row my bad and he's been rates strikeout to walk ratio pretty good despite the fact that he has a really inflated ERS I like to walk a deal because it's three million guarantee from the Mets and then there's another seven million on performance based incentives which I like those kind of deals if I'm ownership not as a player like that but he'll walk is for the seven year career the cardinals the problem is I needed he was injured on July nineteenth this year with the right shoulder strain and then he was in there in two thousand eighteen because a stream us on the left side when he's injured often but he was the and the MVP of the two thousand thirteen LCS and he was that was his rookie year so I don't know I just think they have a a crowded it was over the running back's rooming center I think you just have a very crowded starting pitching room over there at Citi field one of the main concerns about the Mets that I have for the mess for the season doesn't have to do with their roster has to do with their their manager and for we get into this I just wanna give a quick shout out to the the candle light in in Scarsdale New York they have been tweeting in calling actually to tonight and they just to a nice picture of all of them the staff at the bar and they had a nice sciences thank thank Stan also shot out to the candlelight and they tune in they actually tune every single week they took me every week so Caroline in Scarsdale New York you guys are on the check in but my my my my one of my main concerns for the masses is gonna be the fate of their manager arguments gonna start a season with a suspended manager it's going to end in Tom's river hang on for a long time thanks rang in I don't get any okay area first of all you're very knowledgeable I'm with you on this feeling of the story it's worse than doing steroids because doing steroids for more for personal gain with this feeling of the site is more like the team aspect yeah with one goal is to try to keep the wind yeah but well let me ask you this are you in favor of stealing sorry you know the old fashioned way yeah I mean I I I that's partly game it's a gamesmanship versus cheating and I think doing it the old fashioned way quote unquote is gamesmanship it's not cheating with telescopic lens you know and cameras I'm the same way so all we have a Christian because a lot of people call me a hypocrite because I'm saying if you use the technology you choosing but if you don't it the old fashioned way I mean it's just part of the game I think if you're if you as a manager or as a player are sitting in the dugout and you are looking for tendencies of pictures do you know do they do they tap their glove before they throw a curve ball and that is not cheating that's you using your brains to figure out a pattern of behavior but if you're I agree if you're if you have a camera position in center field and you're looking right into what the catcher signs of throwing down and then you're banging a garbage can accordingly that to me is cheating did you hear of what they would be maybe a electronic bandages yep I died so I said on the show yeah yeah so if you really think about that if they had one on each foot in it and like on each shoulder thank you for put location as you know so it's like really really going way overboard and the last thing on Gary Cole what what what do you think about him you know come we always you know because if there was even talk that the reason why Tara so he you know he was actually cheated too so I mean you know if you are a smart came in it was going on as well yeah I know I know that's a concern in many things going on so long I know that's a concern but for the most part and what we know is that for the most part they use it offensively to cheat they were cheating offensively you were in the batter's box you're hearing to banks you know occur boss coming you know offensively I think it was at a huge event I'm not so sure what they were doing in the pictures room honestly but no I think that if you're using technology you are cheating however though if you could pick up on some tendencies or or even as a pitcher you look in as a runner on first you're in you're looking over your shoulder and you see him do something the runner that you know he's going to steal that's not cheating that's gamesmanship I think that's differentiating factor the technology involvement in this whole entire thing that's right in my opinion anyway let's head out to Rosedale Scott axle here on the fan Christmas time in the yes it is let me tell you some Danielle two weeks ago you you hope you do you hope me right and you were talking about the design your install the middle of the night I'm hungry does not in the house I mean you got me hooked after that I got it I have to tell you that news my mom to start selling it maybe maybe we should go into business with this right you know what you could probably do it right at your house to with the independent up any deliver with Amazon S. on right now this is the model here I would've axle okay first of all good good signing of coal people have to realize too great pitches and very good pictures what makes them great is usually around the plate they have very good control so you do do give up home runs nine usual for great pictures to give usually but the thing is nobody on base was very few base one is and that's why you'll see them give up home runs all pitch is doing but these guys always around the plate and I I think that's what the Yankees needed they needed I've come out Tantaros glove on the mound the game is over he's looking at a very good ball pen you might not have to go deep into the games unless if they want to respond with as one of those days double pennies arrest the sound this is the guy you want doesn't guarantee T. anything I mean to me VX ma'am attain Yankees gonna Clinton June occurs on the fans but the thing is a couple of things at about the exact same thing with the Stanton trade a couple years ago and the P. thousand I didn't like it did in need of right I agree which one that I I feel the same way but I also felt when when he came down they ain't gonna get often out of this is a lot of money to put into this guy the Yankees would deal with budgetary things back then right if the thing with the you know the luxury tax whatever but the thing is what that is he was the the left handed back the Yankees could have used a violent back there he's a guy that could really use now the other thing I would love to see the Yankees do and I know when I hang up and I say this the can you guys call I mean everyone's call it when you talk about this and I want me a bomb made bomb folks is only thirty years old he has not done but here's the other one is the wild card now he hasn't pitched in two three years I would sign in to a minor league contract I would tell him look work out we'll put you down far Tampa working out get ready get ready by late all do something I want to make a bomb and a freak on the Yankees that's who I want to be a well I mean I'm looking at is market value now is valued at twenty one point one million dollars a year I don't know if you're given that Miley contract to a guy like that for that money had thing you know I don't know what a freak out to about ten minutes ago I'm just making a joke but I was kind of mass Bumgardner free I'm sorry I'm sorry right it was a complete house by young swirled through remote yeah right but the thing is you know the cost of not then you know let's see what happens yeah and anything with garden now this and you can have this guy around is nothing wrong with having around I mean he's he's a rookie has smashed up the dog out with the bad I routinely I really hope because everything is getting old they're right guys yeah I know that yeah but the Yankees as far as I'm concerned it is obvious my prediction appeared to be playing baseball and I told her in the south Bronx in Danielle you should get more air time on deals the one year show me what you got kind of deal and I think it's just if players incentivized by money that's the deal for them I'm so coming up in and just a few seconds we have our couple there "Gerrit Cole had options and he would have thrived everywhere but Boone is open till five in New York because that's where he's landing as our buster only notes it really came down to his hometown team or the team he rooted for the only question was date would Gerrit Cole one of page for the angels this week let's face it he could have made a choice of Rogers he could have gone to the agency could have gone to the Yankees he went to high school four miles from where the angels play their home games but in the end he chose a team that it was his favorite teams a cable from what I understand it was Yankees owner how Steinbrenner pushing the New York offer from eight years to nine years a couple days ago it really drove across the line he was talking with agent Scott Boras directly to make that happen well bush or who we're seeing owners do this before sometimes outdid themselves where were the angels gonna go I mean did they did the eighties actually need to go with this high together yes from what I understand the Los Angeles Dodgers are willing to pay a ton of money going I don't know exactly what they offered but from what I understand they were willing to do the three hundred million dollar threshold I was told by a source this morning that the angels were necessarily willing to do that so there were teams in the same grouping because very often you get a pitcher's go to get is Gerrit Cole out there and I really feel like the Yankees drew from their playbook from two thousand nine would cease he's about the was a free agent you guys remember at that point the angels offered a hundred million dollars the Yankees came in and stop them out with a hundred sixty one million dollar offer and now they get cold promised exactly twice what they paid cece's about the just eleven years ago dear god these this amount of money makes me so sad because this guy's like a year younger than terrifying and all this buster we know there's gonna be a ripple effect for a lot of people coming office but what does it mean even let's say right within their division for a team like the red Sox who looks at their rival going winning the arms race in the biggest way possible I think the Yankees are going to two thousand twenty is maybe the greatest prohibitive favorite that we've seen a baseball since those late ninety achy teams to the degree that the red Sox you guys have heard they're going through some restructuring it talking about bringing their payroll down they're open to listen to offers from okay that's it makes it easier for them right when the Yankees with this unbelievable team now with Gerrit Cole best pitcher on the planet in front of the rotation this offense at look at the majors in runs scored last year despite all those injuries now the red Sox can with a clear conscience make moves it sets him up better for two thousand twenty one two thousand twenty two I don't think they're going to trade Loki this winter but if they're ten games behind the Yankees in July makes it easy right division generar can the blue jays agreed to a two year twenty four million dollar deal is thirty three he was ten and ten with an ERA of four thirty five minutes thirty one starts this past year for Cincinnati and Oakland which required him at the trade deadline SportsCenter all night ESPN radio to the NBA he spent his last season in Canada help the rafters to a championship and then left in free agency for the clippers Wednesday with the clippers making a stop in Toronto Kawhi Leonard was feeling the love huge ovation on the night that he received his championship ring and then he and the clippers really took over the.

"Off the market Gerrit Cole agreeing to a nine year deal with the Yankees record three hundred twenty four million dollars Garrick Colin self centered Astros record this past season winning his last sixteen regular season decisions led the American League with a career best the array of two and a half he had just one loss after may twenty second that happen to be in game one of the World Series against the nationals but he bounced back with an impressive game five overall in the post season Jared call for and one with an area of one seventy two it over thirty six innings now he's heading from Houston two New York E. S. P. N. insider Jim Turchin they just get any guy they got a twenty nine year old guy who throws as hard as just about anyone with a tremendous been ray they have a guy who learns on the fly just about as well as anyone who keeps getting better and this suggests he's going to get better from here he just had a historic season the greatest strikeout per nine in rate of any starting pitcher ever he struck out a batter in seventy three consecutive innings back to sixteen sixty one we never seen anyone come close to that he's exactly what they needed and the Yankees said were not resting until we get in our pitching on the same theme of the College World Series for UCLA the New York angle of this for a guy like Eric Cole who of course was in Pittsburgh and then he goes to Houston where the spotlight isn't as bright as it is in New York they obviously vet that out what do you think his ability to pitch on that stage will be idled he's gonna have any trouble at all not when he throws ninety seven miles an hour with two nasty off speed pitches unbelievable command again this season he had this year nobody hit him for the last two and a half months of this season the last two years is gone thirty five and ten he said to historic strikeout seasons back to back and when he goes to the Yankees there's no reason to think he won't be that good again no and perhaps influence the other pictures on and sat I guess what you do to is you take Charlie Morton who went to Houston and became a great pitcher left Houston and finished third in the sy young race this season it's not as if you leave Houston you forget what you learned in Houston now he learned a lot in Houston and he acclimated to it now I will go to a new spot the eggs will say wanted to try this he's really smart too it's such a great combination have stuff like that and the ability to adapt and be flexible that's who he is as you think about now the other two teams that were in this and what it means to them the Dodgers have Walker Buehler they have an aids show a tiny an ace entertaining and ace it feels like as we learned earlier on a baseball tonight if they were promises made to Joe Maddon or Mike trout when you sign your deal we're going to surround you with great players who are the great players or great pictures that they can surrounded with if it weren't Strasbourg or call this time well the next level is pretty good but it's not Strasbourg and coal aids you know Madison Bumgarner but now the angels have to say well we have to go get Anthony ran down because of we're not going out pitch you we got to score some runs no Dodgers have to say we have to do something dramatic maybe they'll go get rained down but the next level of pictures is not the same level as Strasburg and especially Gerrit Cole Gerrit Cole career high three hundred twenty six strikeouts they were the most in the majors they sent an Astros franchise record that had stood since nineteen seventy nine J. R. Richard had thirteen Hayes in nineteen seventy nine Gary Cole surpassed that this season it was exciting dynamic yell.

"Look at the Yankees if the Yankees can't pull the trigger on Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasberg for whatever reason and let's be honest I think everybody thinks and knows that they should because that's what they need a number one true number one picture I mean it's got to be one of them because other than call you've got options of Dallas Crichel sport trac is all from the websites for track I love that site as for track head has said his market value at like twenty one million a year Bumgarner is that like twenty one one Wheeler twenty three million a year review twenty eight million a year and then Strasbourg at thirty eight point two million a year so other than call these are the options on the market and but we're talking Black Friday deals for the Yankees so in case this diet Brenner's aren't all that concerned with going over the luxury tax tax than they really are in the Black Friday market Danny Thomas sorry about that day they don't want sterling or to anyone starling Marte okay sorry about that pronounce it wrong my bad sterling it's an easy I know sometimes I think of starling a Castro but I digress anyway the end he's really might be in this Black Friday market is there so concerned hal Steinbrenner is up can go over that luxury tax so let's say that the roll out in twenty twenty with what they already have Tanaka there as there once every noise there too then maybe they could have for Black Friday deal ten a Rourke does get a three seventy one career ERA he's never missed a game due to injury I may be a little more expensive option the problem will go this route but I looked up Alex would as well career areas at three point four pretty good ten or or do they go down the route of clay book called ball colds he's got a clear three ninety eighty are a but he was absolutely terrible last year then a little options geo Gonzalez and these are all Black Friday deals for Yankee starting pitching case they miss on the big guys I think the Yankees actually end of maybe going this route I I hope that they don't but in the case that they do I like it a geo Gonzalez I'd like a Tanner Roark maybe in that order in Dallas one then Rourke and they were looking again now for number one these guys are not going to be the number one maybe hazard three or a four and maybe these guys are the project that the Yankees brand new pitching coach is looking for Matt Blake is looking for Allah the renaissance Gerrit Cole experience when he went to the analytics driven Astros as we'll talk about tonight I do want to get to to see that tonight we got the Gerrit Cole going over to the Astros totally resurrecting his career from from the pirates the Astors I mean it was incredible the the the study that I that I read it and I'll explain it to you guys a little while then I do want to hit that today for sure mean Matt Blake the Yankees pitching coach is so entrenched in analytics and I'm not talking the analytics of the only other guy to go to the third round through through the batting order their tented batting order I'm not talking with data analytics and talking about dental except that it's I'm a baseball they're not I love it where I mean you saw Justin Verlander they were shown on MLB network I know in the playoffs where Justin Verlander increase the arm slot Risi arm slot on his fastball is like six inches and it is totally totally become a weapon for him again so I'm talking that those kind analytics and that's with the Yankees got in Napoli can that's the Mets got to in their new pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and I do want to talk about that so again Black Friday deals for the Yankees if they're not in the market for Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasburg the art there might top two options are geo Gonzalez ten a Rourke we get a lot of calls on hold you guys stay in there eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six will hit them right after the break I'm in a car and.
