"While the imagery on the carving calls to mind the Civil War. No battles were fought at Stone Mountain. The carving isn't even that old having been finished in 1972. That's why John Evans, the former head of a local NAACP chapter, dismisses the heritage argument. He says the carving represents one thing, a continuation of white supremacy well past the civil war. What we want you to do what we want you to consider is taken down. The edifice of the three generals on the mountain. They got to clean it up. Despite the carbon controversy, the park remains popular, drawing three million visitors a year. But Stone Mountain CEO Bill Stephen says some businesses no longer want to hold their conventions at the parks hotels. As for what he can do about it, he says his hands are tied by Georgia law that protects Confederate monuments and by the sheer size of the task to remove the carving would take a small tactical nuclear weapon. Is three acres of solid granite. It's probably not going anywhere. That's why we're telling the story about Stevens and the chairman of the Stone Mountain Board. The Reverend Abraham mostly see the conversation about potential changes is ongoing. Mostly, is a black pastor appointed to the post by Governor Kemp. I'm sure the carbon will come up. It has already came up. Uh, where we go from there? I don't know. And I think on what CEO said we wanted to tell the whole story. The good the bad and earthly. But a new advisory committee that will decide with that whole story looks like is likely to face increased pressure. A growing movement by some conservatives, including Governor Kemp. Seeks to avoid divisive topics about the history of race in the US and on the other side. Activists like Atlanta civil rights attorney Gerald Griggs say they'll continue to demand change. This is not a reflection of what Georgia should be. It should be inclusive. It should tell all of the history and it's removed the hate, starting with the carnies. Last month, the board voted to relocate Confederate flags away from the main hiking area. And today it considers a new park logo. When that's not expected to feature an image of the carving for NPR news, I'm a meal market in Atlanta. This is NPR news back to Joe McConnell ahead of the California report with more traffic.

"I'm Bradley trainer along with Holly Robertson Sanni today. So are the perfect question that I wanted to share with you per corner almost just sounds like a doorbell in a way that it just shouldn't because the story is just gross. And there's another story about Kevin Spacey. And he's been headlines, of course, because he's been charged with sexual assault. He was in court for those allegations. Well, the headline today about Kevin Spacey that I wanted to actually the one yesterday. Remember was that he got pulled over for speeding appearing in court. Awesome way to go way to keep your name and headlines. Now, here's what I find. Just ridiculous shocking. And disgusting. Headline and this is on CNN so don't act like tabloid website trying to make some, you know, click bait is CNN Kevin Spacey's defense claim sexual assault accuser was flirting with him. Really? What his attorneys saying? So his defense team's best argument at this point in a new legal filing. Is that the busboy the eighteen year old busboy? Who accuses the actor by the way of getting him drunk sexually assaulting him repeatedly. He was able to catch this on video. Yeah. He used the word rape in connection with this assault. That individual having shared that just disturbing encounter. Kevin Spacey's legal team wants you to think. Well, he was asking for it. That's disgusting. And that's that is legitimately pathetic. He's handed so gross. Pedophile or somebody who has been accused of sexual or has pattern of sexual assault. It is common in routine for the perpetrator to say things like they ask for it. Right wanted it that twelve year old girl was given me the, wink, wink, right? Like what? No, that's not how that works. And even if that was the case, which was not you or the adult, and you are the professional you don't or I shouldn't say professional. You're you're the person in the room who should have said. Yeah. No. Thank you know. Yeah. And that's just really disturbing to me that his defense would would use this as a method of trying to clear their client of any wrongdoing. Essentially, shaming the person who is coming up with the charges. Yeah. We've heard this many times before even in the case of individuals. Well, they were wearing x y and z so really they were asking for it. So it's really their problem for being flirty with me. You know, I just couldn't resist, and it seemed like they really wanted me to act in that way. Unless you think that Kevin Spacey's defense was going to be this never happened or it didn't happen. The way this person said quote from the filing on Monday by his own account that is the account of the victim by his own account. He did not object to the alleged touching. He did not ask Spacey to stop. And he did not in any way remove himself from the situation. So again, he asked for it. Yeah. Like, haven't we learned anything at this point? Like, this seems so ever verbally ask for it. Well, right, right. Fantastic point sunny. It wasn't say it with their mouth. Yes. Scraggy asks saying that. Yes. Kevin spacey. I in very much enjoy you doing this will be a great experience for the both of us. In fact, I in fact, I believe from talking about the story on numerous occasions. He went out of his way to say, no, I'm not interested. No, I don't want your cocktails. No. And he felt torn and he's talked about this. The victim has that. You know, he felt like he was gonna get in trouble from his workplace because he's not supposed to be drinking on the job. Also, he's not supposed to be drinking, and he was afraid that he would be putting his workplace at risk. And then he was just scared because it's Kevin Spacey. And how powerful is Kevin Spacey. Right. There were all of these things which you can totally understand in the moment of again, an eighteen year old not a forty year old. Not fifty some year old. How old is Kevin Spacey old enough to know better? Yeah. Right. Fifties early sixties probably Kevin Spacey. So again, you have an eighteen year old kid who sure what if he lied about his age? I don't care. If you don't know the age of first of all, what are you doing trying to put your hands down the pants of anyone in a public place after a few cocktails? I mean, I'm not gonna say that, you know, twenty years ago when I was at the clerk and people were getting hands and doing all that kind of stuff that that doesn't happen. But when you are Kevin Spacey, right? Are you doing? That's the sacrifice. You may when you decided to be. Yeah. Taking the risk like if you if you find out later that some young man whose hands I don't know there's just so much. Dynamic between a customer and employee touching on that. Sorry, bad choice of words there. But meaning that Kevin Spacey is the customer, and perhaps having been a person who worked in the service industry know, there are there's a dynamic there between you if your server you're doing whatever and a customer and all the points that you just previously pointed out Bradley where he didn't wanna get in trouble with an employer. He didn't want to get fired. Maybe there is some things that were happening there. It's just I'm just disgusted and cannot say that I'm sure this kid. Didn't learn something from this experience. It's just sad that he that he had to go through the experience to learn those things that we would all like we've all done things that we might look back on and go. Well, maybe I wouldn't do that from this point forward that does not excuse the behavior that happened in the first place and you as a human being in an individual Kevin Spacey need to be held accountable for your actions. Yes. It's like, I think we are. Long since passed the time where we say, oh, well, you know, what do you expect, you know, things happen? Right. Yeah. Yes. Dismissing twenty nine hundred much less. I don't know nineteen something since I've been around. I mean, like, I just can't think of it like you you understand that things used to happen. All the time, quote, unquote, that doesn't make it. Right. Exactly. Well, you know, people have been pointing out those things really in focus since the metoo movement has picked up speed since last year. Yeah. Just because it happened thirty years ago ten years ago, or whenever it doesn't mean. It's okay. It doesn't mean. It's okay. Yeah. People. Yeah. All right. So you think Kevin Spacey only pervert in this corner. There's another one, oh, we need to talk about our Kelly. So our Kelly the subject of the docu series surviving R Kelly that aired on lifetime last week. And there are consequences of that docu series airing on lifetime so fresh after the docu series, airing both prosecutors in Chicago and Atlanta are looking into in launching investigations of sexual and physical abuse against our Kelly. So prosecutors are asking that if anyone has. Has any information that they come forward? So Chicago prosecutor saying there's nothing that can be done to investigate these allegations without the cooperation of both victims and witnesses we cannot seek Justice without you also. And Atlanta lawyer Gerald Griggs representing a couple who claimed is holding their daughter against her will excuse me. I've said that he was approached by the district attorney's office regarding potential abuse by Kelly. So there is action within the criminal Justice system seeking out Justice against R Kelly as a direct result of this docu series. Okay. That that that just shows the power of entertainment in this day and age. Yes. Yes. And we've seen that now on several occasions. I think of making a murderer like, you know, entertainment that is based on true events can actually have an effect on those events. Yeah. So it's nice to see. Now, I have docu series going to say, I feel Sonny. Have you watched this at all the surviving Kelly? Yes, I did. And it's a lot to unpack. First of all, I grew up listening to our Kelly. And I remember when I was younger I heard, oh, he married Leah which is another arm be late Rb singer. Right. That when I was young at the time, I'm looking at it as a young girl like all she's dating an older, man. I didn't know how old are Kelly was. But now is a full grown adult and someone who has a daughter that's pretty much the same age as Leah. That's completely disturbing. And it's also disturbing. How? We as a culture have just responded to our Kelly. And I know a lot of people are like why is this coming up now last year? And I think maybe the before that when the metoo movement got really big a lot of powerful black women on social media were like, we're calling all these other people out, but we're going to sit here and ignore R Kelly, and they started the movement called mute mute R Kelly and so that started to pick up speed. And that's why this came back around interesting. Yes. So I'm glad because I've known for the longest I remember when he came out with chocolate factory. Now these albums and they were number one albums, and he was being accused of all these things. But it's it's this thing with people being able to separate the man from the art, and it is hard. It is because it's like, they, you know, when people make music, it's the soundtrack to your life. But this person's really why you think, you know, for for my generation, it was probably been more than one. But I think of Michael Jackson, for example, people are just totally willing to divorce themselves from the reality of who the person was and come up with what our whatever explanation they might have because they love the music so much as if like you need to somehow comma dates somebody's. I've talked to people who are like, I don't see what their personal life has to do it. I'm like, listen. We're talking about artists their personal life has everything to do with the art that they create. Just to meet.
