"Bobby Jones was like the ultimate awesome guy to have on your team, like one of the best defensive forwards, just like all additive. And then McGuinness was this ball stopper. So you had that you had to trade David Thompson because, you know, he Bill Hanson, can you believe that? Pretty openly had a cocaine problem. Like there was an SI feature about him where they're just asking him, do you have a cocaine problem? And then some of the draft pick mission. You mentioned Chiscavilli and people like that. That's why when it seemed like when they when they did the Iverson Carmelo thing and it was like, this will be weird, but maybe it'll be fun. And they weren't fun. They were both scoring 25. But when they flipped Iverson, really at the tail end of his career into billups, yeah, it felt like there was some momentum. That's when that was the closest they've ever come, was that season is because Chauncey was in a second stint then. Right. It killed me to see him win a title. You know, this is a local kid. He grew up in Denver, like around the time I did. He's grown up at went to George Washington High School. He should have been the guy. If you're going to have somebody, Mr. Big Shot, you know, he should have been the guy kind of leading them to that title to begin with. He goes to Detroit, wins one, comes back. But I felt like they needed this was always a problem with Mello. He needed that kind of field general who was going to not take his shit a little bit and kind of calm him down. That was their best. That was their best version until this year, until this recent yoke stuff. That was the best chance they ever had of winning a title. Was that was that year with Chauncey there? Well, and then you had two years later, Mello's like, you guys got trade me. And they're going, no, actually, we don't. And he's like, well, I'm going to sign with the next. It was like, cool. And then it was a staring match for two months. And I never thought reflected well on Carmelo because he just could have waited to sign with the next. But it was more money for him. If they traded for him. So he ends up getting the next to give all these assets to the Nuggets. And that was another fun Nuggets team. I remember I was doing Countdown that year. It was the 56 win, tie, loss and team. Oh, yeah, the dollar was there and it was like, oh, what's this? And then they got they got waxed in round one. But let me tell you something, man, just like being that like I think you've kind of nailed it. Like that Carmelo thing was a very ugly kind of acrimonious divorce from the Nuggets. And I never felt like he truly embraced Denver anyway. It was always more of an East Coast guy. I haven't gone to Syracuse, all that stuff. New York really wanted him. I felt like you guys were like a way station for we were in law. I saw some article about what happens. Yeah. Who do you retire? Number 15, Jokic or Carmelo? I'm like, take a fucking poll of the Nuggets fans. It's going to be 100 to zero for no shit. And look at the timing of that, too. Like we finally get into a finals and then they like they throw up all this stuff. I see George Carle on there like hammering like who, you know, trying to give mellows respect. It's just the wrong time. This is bad timing for him. But to put into perspective, what it's like being a Nuggets fan, you get a guy who wants out of town, which we're not unfamiliar with. You know, we've seen this this act before, but nobody with as big of a name as Mello. You you get a trade, you bring in this hall. And which included Jamal Murray in the end, by the way. So it all worked out like they bring in this hall and they proceed with almost no superstars, so there really no superstars to get 57 wins, which was a franchise record for them with just that. You know, the depth of team, like they had 10 guys they could roll out there and just keep having two starting lineups of woodwork figures who were all very good, you know, and leave it to the Nuggets. Like I felt I remember thinking like, hey, maybe they're going to show something the NBA hasn't seen, which is that you can win without like these superstars. They go into the playoffs. And of course, this is the beginning of the Steph Curry. Right. That whole thing. They run into a buzzsaw. And I remember because Golden State lost David Lee. In the first game, and I thought, oh, they're playing dream on. Yeah. And then it was like, this is going to be easy. And then it was just Curry and Thompson killing them from threes. The first time I'd ever seen anything like that. And then they proceeded to do that for the next decade. And then he would all ends up in the Warriors. Yeah. When I was when I was a kid and I love basketball more than anything. And it really wasn't on TV that much. But I knew about Thompson and he had passed through. Once that Denver came to the ABA, we got to actually see him. And I just had never seen anyone jump like that. His basketball card was cool. Sports Illustrated was covering him. And this guy was Michael Jordan before Jordan for a couple of years there. You go back and you watch. I remember a researcher from my book, though they came really close. You could argue that the Portland Denver series is really fun to watch. But Thompson's like, I think he's like his second year in the league. He's fucking awesome. Yeah. That year before he started to have the issues. But you think like you have that you have Carmelo. It's not like they've never had good players. But then Jokic comes in and now Jokic is a top 20 guy. I mean, if they win the title, he vaults into there. We're talking about fun moments, though. Like to me, it was that one of those Portland series when they were throwing haymakers and he was so great, just like on a bigger stage with Murray. And that was like, oh, there's something here. And I think that's the last thing we should probably talk about is just the Jokic and Murray thing together, how special that is. It's so hard. These super teams getting thrown together and these guys that spend two, three years together, and that's it. Those guys are so attuned. I was able to, you know, I got to watch that with Bird and McHale in the mid 80s, and I got to watch that a little bit with the with the KG Allen Pierce Celtics. By the time they'd been playing together five, six years, there was really like a know how with those guys. I think the the current Celtics tape doesn't really have it, as you saw against Miami. But that when guys are attuned like that, it's such an advantage. I don't know how you put a statistic on it. It's instinctual, right? Like the way they play and they've been playing together forever. And I honestly believe this is the only way it was ever going to happen for Denver. It had to be something like what has gone on here, which is that they've parlayed a completely miraculous second round pick into an MVP and then brought in this dude from Canada who everybody knew could play, but somehow has

San Francisco Voters Recall 3 Board of Education Members
"A small piece of hopeful news good news out of San Francisco, the city has voted decisively. This is the voters. More than 70%. In a recall vote to throw out three of the members of the city school board. And the vote was not close. Allison Collins recalled by 78% to 21% Gabriella Lopez, 74% to 24%. Falga moliga recalled 71% to 27%. So this is massive majorities liberal majorities have decided to give these three scoundrels the boat. So you might ask, what's going on in San Francisco? Well, by and large, the city school board has been in complete, has kept the schools in complete shutdown. And parents are getting increasingly restless. My kids aren't getting a proper education. They're essentially being cognitively deprived for the larger part of two years when other schools gonna open, but instead of focusing on that, what the city school board was focused on is renaming the schools. Apparently, these three characters were leading a drive to rename a whole bunch of schools in San Francisco. The Abraham Lincoln school, the George Washington school, the Thomas Jefferson school that Theodore Roosevelt school, the Robert Louis Stevenson school, Nepal revere school all renamed, and the decision to rename them was taken literally in seconds. Apparently they had a sort of a research committee, the school names advisory committee, they did no real research. They did basically Google and Wikipedia. And they just decided, Abraham Lincoln, yeah, you freed the slaves, but who cares? You know, he was the American Indians didn't do very well under Lincoln. Boom, he's gone. And this was the methodology. No debate, no consultation with historians, no effort to sort of do a balanced assessment. The only time a balanced assessment came up as somebody said, well, wasn't Malcolm X kind of a racist in the early part of his career, and they were like, yeah, but he got better later. So what we're not gonna read. We're not gonna take his name off the

"Hispanics and blacks. White said blacks Blacks and blacks. I'll also say this The first high school I attended was called George Washington High School. When you were still able to call it that And there were a number of white kids. I can't remember the percentage but I want to stay close to 30 to 40%. Maybe even have I was there just for one semester, and there were a number of fights that I saw. And every fight that I saw where I could determine Who started and sometimes you can't determine it. Everyone I saw. Was started by black person. Every single time. And I saw several where I saw white people minding their own business. And someone went up to the hole with black. Began taunting. Punching for no reason at all. I saw it over and over and over again. Remember Eric holder and giving a speech about pernicious racism. Sighted one example of pernicious racism, the fact that black boys Are disappointingly expelled or suspended. Given school, compared to their percentage of that particular school's student body population. He called that an example of pernicious racism. And several years ago following up on that thing, Jesse Jackson Food that Decatur, Illinois School board. We talked about this before. When they suspended a whole bunch of black boys who were fighting after a football game. Jesse Jackson FOOD, the All White School board indicator. Accusing him of racism. And they defended themselves by pointing out that all over the country. Irrespective of the composition of the school board, irrespective of the race to the teacher in respect of the race of the Principle. Black boys were disappointingly kicked out. Appear to others. Given the percentage of that particular school boards. Population. In the federal judge threw out the lawsuit. Because it was stupid. So, Yeah, I think telling Lacks that their victims, whites or oppressors. You're going to increase racial tension. And the schools. My suspicion is a large number of a great deal of the venom will be directed towards whites. You know what happens when you get your butt kicked You come home. You tell your parents You know what they do? They move. You're not going to leave their kids in a school where he or she gets her butt kicked. Just to make a point. They move. And then the very same people will go BMW about how racially segregated, rested residential areas are I mean, it's just a joke. Absolute joke. "Understand what it was. I think a lot of it is due to the contribution of the african american community because we had howard university here and we had pay equity in the federal government. We had the nation's smartest about african americans come to this town and go to howard university and get a degree and they wanted to teach or play sports. They didn't have much choice. They couldn't Participate with white americans so they turned their efforts to the community. They they were active in churches. And that's let it clubs and And they perfected the game in ways that we might not realize the game that was made in springfield massachusetts was a nine-man passing only game and They decided that that wasn't enough exercise. They turned it into a five-man dribbling game in washington. Dc and they. They started playing really tough defense and really good strategy and they raise the bar for all the schools in the area and all the coaches Term to develop these programs and good citizens as well as good players with good strategy and hard work and stamina and If you wanted to play a good game in dc before we had a beltway or metro you had to walk. Two hours took participate. And you didn't go home until it was dark. So not only did they get a great exposure to this at school but they spend all day on weekends and holidays on the court. Watch it and and playing basketball. Yeah i always felt that the playground game was a little bit different and a little bit more important myself. I mean i'll give you an example. Because i know washington. Dc son going down ninety five degrees ninety five percent relative humidity. Ten guys five shirts and skins. I will never get that out of my mind andrea. John hadn't quite finished his very first. Chapter and And i was thinking of that. When i tried to write down. The first sentence was that it's hard to imagine any time in washington. Dc when you didn't hear The stumps and grunts of dozens of basketballs and hundreds of players pounding out their dreams. I felt like. I was watching people during when i saw these games. These these young men had dreams and it was exciting to watch so many of them. Come through. I remember when i came back to washington to visit one summer Because my dad was military. I went over to washington dc. Because i loved being in that environment and even you know as a white guy. I didn't have the skill set that the black players did. But i'd be invited to play. And i remember i i got fouled one time and one of the players on the court said to me said young man he said you're not you're not fouled if you're not bleeding yes. That was one of those things on the court. No blood no foul. That's it tell me tell me. A little bit about how segregation affected the evolution of sports in the washington metro area. A lot of sports was just not accessible to african american community The adults could keep kids off the golf course and the tennis courts. Baseball diamonds and football fields. But they couldn't stop them from playing basketball together. Some schools had security during the school day. But after five o'clock the grounds were empty. So kids play together and they wrote about playing together. There's some interviews with some players who car pulled together black and white together and they talked about how enjoyable it was and how they stop thinking about The segregation and of course people who had to go home to segregated areas probably didn't forget but i think when they were on the court they could forget about it and just Enjoy the joy of playing together and drink from the water fountain that was there and and just make each other work hard. Tell me about some of the early legends. That were out there in washington dc on the playground in schools. Well we we had. Some people think was the best player ever We had elgin baylor. Who had a lot of attention. He was the first african american basketball player to take the court as a professional. A lot of people know about him but what they don't know is one of his toughest games was against gary. The one armed. Bandit nays who had one arm and he held elgin baylor nineteen points and scored twelve of his own when they played and he tried to the brooklyn dodgers later and although he was voted the best player by the other applicants. They didn't pick him up. the harlem globetrotters offered to give him a job that he didn't want to play as a clown he wanted to play ball with everybody else so he never achieved his dreams but historian fascinating and he was in life magazine where they had some pictures showing how he could throw and catch a baseball We had austin carr right we. Just let's see we will adrian yet adrian. Dantley dave bing another's. I remember seeing them as well. You mentioned about earl He was the first black player in professional basketball. Was not and the reason why i bring that up is that i remember doing an interview with him because i lived in alexandria virginia and that's where he was raised as well and what was interesting about it was. He went to parker gray. Highschool and parker gray high school was right across the railroad tracks from the white school. Which was george. Washington high school. And i asked him. I said you know when you guys looked over there. Because he i don't know if he played football or not but he told the story to me that You know the lights at parker gray high school in the football field. You know they weren't very good. You can hardly see in the end zone. And he said we'd look over. George washington high school and we see this beautiful high stadium with the lights and and everything on it and i thought that that really crystallized a particular time everywhere probably but particularly in the nation's capital am i correct on that yes absolutely The that's can american players Had to struggle to find out of credit facilities and unfortunately we haven't been able to change that as much as we should but that was definitely a problem and an inequity for for them. Tell everybody about morgan wootten. Oh thank you Morgan wooten Has coached for about forty years. He started out with a toe. Gallagher at johns highschool. And that's where. John went John wasn't quite good enough to play for joe They they had but they had some future nba players on that team. When john was there But it didn't take long for morgan to get hired by the nasa. maybe two years He was at the nasa and he thought he was being hired as a teacher but he realized he was being hired as the head coach as well and And not cindy's coaches that developed programs where teachers to students they weren't just coaches and And he was there for forty years he had James brown It let's see adrian branch and dantley. "Sent me by stew. Has the San Francisco Chronicle, which by the way, they're brilliant editorial on this Opposing name changes. Ever noticed that this country is in the middle of a badly needed and way overdue discussion and reckoning about race. We should George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and by the way My cousin. Clear, Lillian Fall. Uh huh. Authored. The Desegregation of San Francisco schools. They honored her by naming the school clearly and fall. Because of our work on this level. Why would you take her name off? And number two The point is made the Conquistadors the slave owners, the people responsible for killing native Americans are all by definition iconic and they are deemed Unworthy of the honor. Look, let me explain to me to you. George Washington owned slaves. Thomas Jefferson own slaves. It's true, Abraham Lincoln made comments that were racist. These are people who did many wonderful things, too. And by the way, that's not what they're remembered for. I remember Lincoln for the Emancipation Proclamation. Remember George Washington for pulling this country together. And when I hear people say, Oh, just change the names. You have to wash in high school you take over the murals. The murals depict slavery depict a dead first nation person. To teach the kids about it. This is this is nuts. 4158080 a 10. And by the way, it will be fought. It will be fought. Without any doubt. No math emails. Changing the name of Lincoln High That's really dumb. Come to think of it. What did Joe Biden sight in his inaugural address? But Abraham Lincoln Look, I don't believe in whitewashing history. And when the San Francisco Chronicle Pointed out. Their view. In fact, they write nine out of 10 presidents who want their names to the city schools. Fell short of the school board's stringent standards up to and including George Washington. By the way, there may be some confusion there right over which Roosevelt was the namesake of the middle school. There's no mistaking I went there It was theater, Russell. And this is just plain wrong. And the people of San Francisco won't stand for it. I'm telling you Be School board is going to face such a backlash like they've never felt. Where a school's name is wrong. Where it should be changed. I have no problem. We've had schools names changed here in San Francisco. We have. But Diane Feinstein Give me a break. I am. Feinstein is not a racist. She is not a bigot. And This is what Absolutely. Towards me. And there is outrage rising and it should rise. Did you hear Don Lemon Last night on CNN. He took after this. Hey, Did you hear Tucker Carlson or Sean Hannity? There's nothing That is more surprising. Then that liberals and conservatives in the media are united on this. Here in San Francisco, The San Francisco Chronicle. San Francisco Examiner. Even if it is really Very upsetting. I personally am going to do everything I can. To prevent this dastardly deed. From being done. You know, they call George Washington. These these so called name changers. They call him, Uh, A slave owner in a colonizer. That's all they have to say about him, Dianne Feinstein, referring to the Democratic senator, They say that they're a number of reasons, including an unproved accusation that she put up a Confederate flag. It also accuses her opposing same sex marriage, though she voted against a constitutional amendment to ban it. And as for Abraham Lincoln As the Chronicle points out. Uh, It's it's nuts. Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln. It was the great Emancipator. He's the one who freed black slaves, and that is what is important here. And then you have, of course, Roosevelt Middle School, and they couldn't even decide whether it was theater. Roosevelt Franklin No, I think the people of San Francisco need to stand up. And speak out firmly on this. Don't you? We like each other. 41580808 10. Let me go to Ah, Roger calling from Union City. Roger. Welcome to KGO. Hi, honey. Can you get off speakerphone? Thank you. Evening, John called culturally. They still there? Yes, I'm here listening to you that Yeah. I'm kind of just dumbfounded by this whole school name changing thing. It just it seems kind of crazy doesn't seem like the citizens got any input in on it. And they're just I mean, Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipator. It's just kind of crazy and I just don't understand. And what names are they gonna put in when they get rid of everybody else? Well, that's what they're thinking about. But I can tell you at Lincoln High School, they'll have toe Eliminate the art. They'll have to pull out the statue of Abraham Lincoln at George Washington High School. They have to paint out the murals Remove the statue of George Washington. I mean, yeah, I said it the other night. And I mean this very sincerely when they changed the name of Washington, D. C. When they blow up the Washington Monument when they destroy the Lincoln Memorial when they changed the name of Washington state when they changed the name of the streets here in San Francisco, Washington Jackson Lincoln when they do all of that, To change the names of the high schools there and the little schools on the elementary schools. It's crazy. That doesn't make sense. I totally support black lives matters. Thank Mount Way we need to make more progress towards equality. But, you know, changing the names of the schools and It just seems too much. I mean, I don't I don't understand. So I agree with you and listening everybody pretty much. Let's see what the school board does. I mean, I'm not gonna do anything at this point. It sounds like they've already kind of made their minds up. They're going to toss the names and then come up with some new names. And again, the public wanted to make any input and usually public schools. Republicans allowed Torto how some input on this kind of stuff, and it's just kind of like the ignore the public. So that Z frustrating. No, I I agree with you. Aside from that I appreciate your call. Aside from that no member of the school board has deigned to communicate with us, except one. There is one member of the school board. He was just elected to the San Francisco Board of Education. And Matt Alexander finally sent and E I appreciate is doing it. But This is what he wrote to. Ah, colleague. Regarding putting these two vote. I was just elected to the school board in the citywide election. And during the campaign, I consistently gave this response when asked for my position on renaming, I believe This is, uh A new member of the Board of Education. I believe the names of public institutions are reflection of the community's values and reflection of power. Thus, with careful consideration, community input and a deliberative process, it's appropriate that name should be changed with the times. Let me just interrupt and say There was no careful consideration. There was no community input, and it wasn't a deliberative process. I mean, that's very clear. It was a set up. They decided what they want to do. Anyway, he goes on to say it's appropriate that name should change with the Times. To me. The changing of names does not mean erasing history on the history teacher. He writes with two decades experience, and I know that understanding the past is critical. But names of public institutions ought to reflect the present here in San Francisco. We have the opportunity to ensure that our school names match the values of our school district and our city. So what he is saying This is a new member of the Board of Education is the values of Lincoln and Washington. And my cousin, Clear, Lillian Fall. Don't reflect the values of this city or this country. That Alexander your history, Teacher, Boy wonder what you're teaching your class. He goes on to say. For me. It is significant that redesigning the process at this point would mean undoing the work that has already been done and require even more of the board's attention. During a time when we were in a real crisis, trying to get schools reopened safely in person with also supporting our tens of thousands of low income families who are in desperate straits due to covet and.

No. Oh, no, that's we know that's never gonna happen, Helen. I know where. Well, a lot of kids When they took player and everything out of the food, a lot of kids. Are never gonna know anything about the Bible. Well, yeah, I mean, unless they seek it out, or they have parents who are teaching them or they, you know, they're they find it from another source. But I do wonder what our teacher's gonna be teaching now. I mean, I would hate to think that Helen that You know, Teacher's gonna be painting. Our former presidents is nothing but Racists and cramming all of this. This kind of rhetoric down their throats and into their minds, and I would I'd feel terrible about that. But, yeah, I think that's a pipe dream, naming it after any anything in the Bible. I don't see that happening, Helen, but No to be sensitive. And let's finally go to John. He's in grass Valley. Final word on this for tonight. Hello, John. Say hi pad. Uh, you know, People are ignorant, a little bit of power. They get ignorant because you can't change history by changing the name. If you're smart, you learn from history and don't repeat it. That's right, you know? Yeah, And a lot of people. You know, they're like this. I mean, for instance, 25 years from now. Some little boy be sitting on his dad's lap and say, Hey, dad, did you go to school in San Francisco? He says. Yeah, Well, what was your school name? Because we were named after a plant because ah, plant. What was that pussy Willow High school. Right? Right. Right. You knew that, didn't you, John? Thank you. Thank you. Pushy William Alumni. Thank you very much, John. Yeah, man. Meanwhile, let me think about it, Dad, what's going to junior? I went to Lincoln Elementary. Lincoln High School. Dad is not the racist slave owner. I mean, think about it. That's George Washington and with the George Washington High School, Dad, he was a racist. I mean, come on, is that where we're going is we're going to give that we're going to continue with that kind of rhetoric is out to being taught in our schools now. If I did my living in Bizarro world Yeah. Thank you for the calls on that. You know, Kendall is I'm thinking about it today, 35 years ago. 35 just can't believe it was 35 years ago. Today. Why haven't you know? They teach that in history anymore? I don't know. But You know this was a big, big deal. Something we shouldn't forget about. But 35 years ago. It's just It's just really. It's so hard to imagine. And I remember That morning. It's one of those things that We kind of remember where we were what we were doing if we were around, then And I still remember vividly what I was doing that day, and I know we've We've probably talked about this before. Perhaps Tom Sullivan and John McGuinness. And I'm not. I did not hear their shows today, so I'm not sure if they talked about San Francisco was another reason why I have so many issues with what is happening. Did they talk about this today? Can all they did? John McGuinness did. Oh, he's always beat me to the punch. Well, he hasn't earlier show, you know is it is a daytime show. Mm hmm. Sometimes I think if I repeat things that you know that someone when the other talk show hosts did that I'm Maybe we're burned down on that topic, but I just have to give my piece to my two cents. So I guess John talked about it. But the San Francisco school board voting to rename 44 schools, including Abraham Lincoln and George Washington high schools. How about that? I never thought I'd see the day. John John Wayne Airport is gone. He was always considered a great American. Can't have that. We were always taught. And with great presidents Abraham Lincoln George Washington. They're not the only two Yeah. Way to go. San Francisco Unified School district voting this week to rename 44 schools named after controversial, controversial why they controversial. Controversial, You know, just because you write controversial Don't necessarily think that they are necessarily controversial again. This is a different time. I mean, just a different age. But according to if you read the the Some of the stories the controversial public public figures. Yeah. By the way, including Senator Dianne Feinstein. So the school district, which has more than 57,000, students, and roll is changing schools named after historical figures linked to the Subject, Gatien enslavement of human beings or who oppressed women in him any societal progresses. Actions led to genocide who otherwise, significantly just be diminished the opportunities of those amongst us The right toe Life Liberty pursuit of happiness. Abraham Lincoln. Schools would be named. We will be renamed, including Family Kanai School, George Washington High School. Diane Feinstein Elementary Roosevelt Middle School. What Jefferson Elementary and Alamo Elementary. You know? I am curious what you think about this. By the way, Sam is this was not the only student have passed this resolution. In recent years, city councils and school districts nationwide. Every named buildings removed monuments. We? We We We know it off to tell you all that, but so let's go ahead and erase all of our history. Let's pretend that these men did nothing great in this world, which we know they did. It's just erase the history. So then. Another 150 years They could come back and look what we did and went. Oh, my gosh, These people radiance. We need to take these statues down that they put up or the ones that they took down. We need to put back up. Where they were just wrong. So let's erase that history and then another 150,000 years goes by, and then then the way they erase that history, and so we have that we have no history. Look at the think about we just erase it. But I'm trying to think. Who should we name these schools? If not, if not, after Abraham Lincoln or George Washington and President Roosevelt. Me who Who out there was the perfect individual. Perfect individual that we Kaname these schools after there must be someone or something. We did We just stop naming it after People. What do we name the schools after and who was Who can we choose? Happy Thursday to you, John McGinnis with your news. 93.1 kid became live everywhere on the I heart radio up. We'll be having a great day and the last thing's going on across the country and right here in the region within the state of California. I'm looking and crunching numbers and looking at the algorithms and trying to figure out exactly what the state of California has used to make determinations as to I C u bed capacity. That's gonna be an interesting way to look at. But I'm not ready for that. Yet. That will be forthcoming and future programs. Um But I do want to talk about something that we have discussed a little bit in the past. But it now has become official, referring to the San Francisco school board, taking a course of action now to reject the name of some 44 San Francisco of school sites. Uh, where schools were named after public officials that At the board. And then the contemporary times find offensive. I think it's very, very interesting to look at the basis upon which they made their decision. So the names of presidents, Conquistadors, authors and even a current U. S senator will and former mayor of San Francisco will be removed from 44 San Francisco school sites. After the city school board voted Tuesday, um and deemed the iconic figures unworthy of the honor. This was interestingly enough, a 61 vote, followed by months of controversy with officials, parents, students and alumni at odds over whether Abraham Lincoln, for example, on George Washington High School's Dianne Feinstein Elementary And dozens of others needed new names with no connection to slavery, oppression, racism or similar criteria. Critics have called the process hastily done with no basis and foundation for the decision with little or no input from historians and a lack of information on the basis for each recommendation. In one instance, that committee didn't know whether Roosevelt Mitchell's middle school was named after Theodore Roosevelt or Franklin Delano Roosevelt. That's kind of an interesting question. One might want to answer before you make a decision to reject it. Are we that alone pick up there? Don't look up there. Sorry about that modern technology. Um So, one of the community member says. I must admit their reasons to support this resolution. But I cannot. This was a community member by the name of Gene Barrish, who said the process had been flawed and based upon emotion rather than expertise. They're these are not decisions, she said. That should be made in haste. School board members, however, as have insisted that renaming is timely and important, given the country's reckoning with the racist past. They have argued that the district is capable of pursuing multiple priorities at the same time, responding to critics who say more pressing issues deserve attention. Yeah, here's here's a novel idea. Why not get to the business of educating the kids? How's that? How's that for a good priority? Um, this'll. These schools are empty their ghost towns. Nobody's end of the school Teachers union won't go to work because of the pandemic. Some schools. Families argued for a name change for years, including those that James Denman middle School named after the first superintendent in the city of the man that people believe was racist and who denied Chinese students of public education. Others argue that current names means students are wearing school sweatshirts with the names of slave owners. Including Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Um, one such board member says it's a message. This told the Chronicle. I should say it's a message to our families, our students and our community. It's not just symbolic. It's a moral message. School board member CA Vine Barges was the loan that no vote, saying that while he didn't agree with all the criteria and recommendations, his vote was largely based on his opposition to naming schools after elected officials, a rule he wanted included as part of the renaming process. The families and staff of the school still have until April to suggest a new name. Which would then be brought back to the board for a vote. Interestingly enough school will not be in session in San Francisco in April, when that when that takes place, so they've neglected their primary function. In fact, when I would argue is their only function. In the course of all this. They're not reopening. The schools are not educating the youth in the city of San Francisco. There's there's Chris criticism of Han Apparel, Sarah the Nipper. I should say Sarah, the after whom an elementary school is named. Hey was of course, they Catholic missionary and also described by many as a brutal colonizer. The rejection is we should not honor him with the name for elementary school. A parent survey showed 80% in favor of changing that particular name. They also asserted that they should be given a chance to come up with their own new name, but I find it very, very interested by the way. The mayor London Breed argued that the effort was ill time given the pandemic and the impact on Children. Especially students of color, and in fact, students are not even in the school, subject to the renaming. Some criticized the board Tuesday for focusing on symbolism rather than Legitimate substance. Um What I found is very interesting that these you look at the list of names and Dianne Feinstein. She's she was the mayor of San Francisco. She is a bit of a trail blazer in her own right. She's not not a doesn't have to be a member of my political party. But she is a I think a person of significance in the city of San Francisco City very profound.
