"Very pragmatically. And then that class went well and I found out that I am George. Forgive me Hold that slide because we're coming up to Drake. And the break doesn't start for anyone, and George was a geophysical engineer working in Mining, the only bookie Booker Award winner. I think recipient who has a background in mining engineering, join us with George Sanders 8667336786. That's 8667336786. Well, we're having some technical issues with the program and we can talk about a little bit of weather until we're reconnected. It looks like we're gonna have showers. Throughout the day. Maybe even some thunderstorms late in the morning and highs today Low fifties to mid fifties. It looks like, uh, 52 expected. Later on in Walnut Creek and Napa. It should reach 54 not a big difference in all right. Here we go. This is Forum on KQED Public radio. Thistles Forum. Our guest is George Sanders Booker recipient and also recipient of the MacArthur genius grant and talking about his new book, which was called Swim in the pond in the rain, and if you have questions for him, you give us a call now, and I have some questions that you may. Indeed, as listeners want to respond to what makes for a great short story masterpiece. It's always a question that's covered in my mind, cause I take short fiction and have for many years. The whole thing for the teaching company on short story masterpieces and wrestle with the whole idea of what is a short story masterpiece You may want to put in certainly your own nomination, so to speak, and the stories of George selects here are Indeed in that category, but also we're talking with him about craft and talking about the effect of reading on us. A lot of people think it has Affective empathy and increasing our empathy And that is an ongoing discussion and controversy in itself. But how does it expand our horizons? What is reading due to you? And for you and Some of you who are aspiring writers who want to find out more about the craft of writing. You learn a lot from George, Who is the Masters, I said, and you may want to indeed join us. If you have questions, or if you have comments, you can join us. Also, by getting in touch on Twitter and Facebook, where I take you dd form or email us. Forum at KQED. That organ Sorry we had to go to a break, George, you're in the middle of talking about the genesis of here. Teaching Russian writers. Right, So really, it just was sort of chance at first. And then over the years, I kept teaching the course over and over the 20 years I've been in Syracuse and you know, as you know the certain stories in certain approaches, just pop in a classroom and others don't Who knows why. So over the years, I knew there are about 15 stories that I could you know, the week before I taught him I was kind of gleefully just waiting because I knew the kids would loan s Oh, really? I started up the The idea of the book would be about those 15. And then because I wanted to mimic the class as much as possible. I also wanted to put the full text of the story in the book. So that brought me down to about seven on you know, they're really wonderful stories. I'd say My favorite stories aren't in the book like the Overcoat. Lady with pet dog death of Ivan Village. But so these were maybe, like the kind of you know a minus stories, although, you know check of a minus stories and a triple plus for anybody else, But Lady was attacked August 8 minus the book of Called Is the Greatest story ever written? Which one was that? The lady with the pet dog? That the child I agree with him? Yeah. That would be in a plus story. But I left out of the book for that reason, because those things you just sort of have toe praise them, and what I want to do with this book was just kind of have, you know, in a way, it's like story. Morgan, You wanna have a story on the slab? Maybe it's not perfect, and then you can kind of feel free to move it around and investigated a little bit. I love to talk with you about craft but talk about the truth of fiction. I'd like to hear what you have to say about that and reflect on it for a moment because I think it's something that you get to the heart of in your book. And that certainly both of us probably reflected on a good deal. The truth that comes to us through fiction, which itself is a lie. Yeah. Right, Right. Well, one of things that I came upon on the book that I thought was interesting was that you know when I when I say to you Michael once upon a time. You know you're you're primed. You're willing to hear me out. But but Hovering over that moment. Is your sense of what of the way the world actually works. So if I say once upon a time I walked across the field of freshly cut grass, and it smelled as it always does, like kerosene. Something in you goes. Wait a minute where That isn't true. I don't believe that And our our relationship is sundered a little bit. You know, you're had my arm around your shoulders walking through story land. And when I said that thing that doesn't jibe with your experience, you pulled away from me a little bit. So we could understand, uh, particularly made up stories as being this content. Continual referendum on truth by which I mean Our mutual sense of how things are in the world. So in that way, you know, writer like toast Way. For example, One of his superpowers is he is just really good at observing and remembering and expressing the way things mostly feel for us. And I would argue that he uses it a little bit like you know, the way a carnival. Barker uses his pitch every time we're about to go off and do something else, toast Wait, says something about the world with which we agree and that pulls us back in into the mix, and that, of course, allows him to Gradually lead us up the mountain to his his deep philosophical things, But you know, it's one of the sort of story telling one on one things is why do I keep listening to you? And one of the things is to be truthful and a sort of cyber war. That is to be specific? Yeah, I'm struck by your use of the word super powers Which you using your book as well, and it does. Figure that our lives could be improved that we can actually but be brought together by literature. And if you want to join, join us with George Saunders again. The number to call is 8667336786 years, Pat and Quarter Madeira. Pat. Welcome. You're on the air. Hi. Thanks very much. I'm actually just pulling off the road, so I won't be driving and talking at the same time. Um, I am very interested in Tolstoy. I had a very sporadic education as well. But Russian offers fell into my lap somewhere in my twenties and Whole story somewhere, wrote about the importance of living healthily, meaning that instead of just getting exercise, you know, just a walk or just the run. That you find a way to make that energy work for somebody else. It was a little like the Dalai Lama's. You know, you have to give in order to receive and I'm wondering if Mr Sanders if you know where Tolstoy wrote about that, because I would love to read more. And I've looked and how it really been able.

"And thanks to a weak willed secretary of state who signed this agreement with Stacey Abrams back way back when, months ago, this chicanery has been allowed to go on. I believe that David Perdue will win He won on election night and had more than the 50% he needed. But then they, you know, found more votes as as you experienced in your own situation in New York. Um La Flor is is kind of at a tipping point since she was an interim appointment Senator. But if they only win one of the two seats and the Republicans only when one of the two seats than the Republicans still have a majority, correct Absolutely, but we want to keep both. I don't want to write off. Kelly lost her. She's a great senator. She's a young woman in the Senate. We need younger people in the Senate so they could stay there and actually do the job and no offense to the old guard in the Senate, you know, But come on. We can't. We can't. We can't write her off and we need to go fight for her. I look, I'll fight harder for Kelly lost more than I will for David Perdue because you said it yourself, even in Traunch Democrat in the entrance and commented Me that's already there. It's going to be very hard to out him. I just don't see the same for Kelly. She's gonna have an uphill battle. And I'm there all the way to make sure I see her through the finish line on the fifth of January. You know what's so weird about this? George is that if you look at their opponents, you look at Raphael Warnicke and you look at us off. They're so flawed. How could they even Expect to mount a challenge to oust either one of these people. But again we're living in the age of Stacey Abrams were living in the age of a weak willed secretary of state. Who has been bought off by somebody. I mean, we're living in an age go ahead. Here's my point. And I'm sorry to cut you off my point. I don't think we gave the threat that Stacy Abram Woz enough credibility. Either. I think we slept on the job a little bit in Georgia, because whatever it is, she was preaching for the last two years, she intoxicated the minds of the Georgian electorate. And here is the result of just that. You treat intoxication of indoctrination of the electorate. She's been screaming that's in voter fraud for two years on her race, which is yet to concede. But now when it's our turn to scream with evident prod and and corruption in the election, she's the one screaming that it's impossible. I mean, how many mouths can you have? And how many sides of your face can you speak out of true that Through that. Well, I mean, S o. You're going down to Georgia. Yeah, assembled a group of people and we're heading down and it's very, very crucial. It's very important that the Republicans when both seats, but at least one of the two So the Democrats don't have total control of power in Washington, D C. And you know what? Just from an overall standpoint, I think even the stock markets like it when there's a separation of powers between the parties in Washington, D. C As a finance professional 11 years work in Wall Street. I can tell you that is Actual. Yeah, and that is a factual as it comes. We don't like one party rule. Either way, Republican Order or Democrat. Although a one party rule Republican has always proven to be more business and economy friendly. No hands. The market doesn't react slightly better, but not as not as good as a Checks and balance. Uh, rule of power. So, yeah, it's just phenomenal. What's going on and all, man, I gotta tell you this this entire election cycle will go down on the books as please skip Election year. 2020. Yes, I agree with you and how dangerous Would it be to have Ah, Kamila Harris is President United States because that's what we're looking at, basically of Joe Biden is is ruled as a zoo winner. In the presidential race, and and my God, we've got to have a check and balance on a Kamila Harris as president, United States, I mean, not not to be not to be, uh, you know. Conspiracy, terrorists or anything like that. But, you know, on one day started saying it was Joe Biden and I congratulated immediately. Both Madam president and Madam vice president. That's the reality of what we're looking at where you're looking at. President elect Kamala Harris and Vice President elect Nancy Pelosi. In six months. So a year that will be reality. Joe Biden. Health has been on decline since he hit the trail. I wish him well. I am a Roman Catholic and I practiced and I don't wish ill upon anyone, not even those. I disagree with disagree with idea in ideology. But the man should have never run for office. The what His family put him through and the party put him through was elderly abuse. You know, you know, you know what I equated to George. You remember when Dick Clark had the stroke, the awful stroke. Yeah, they still let him on his New year's Rockin Eve because he felt like he needed to be there. There was no one around Dick Clark, who cared about him enough to say Dick. Don't do this. We're not gonna let you do this, and that's how I feel about Joe Biden running for president. There's nobody cared enough. Even his wife, who he doesn't know from his sister. Didn't care enough to say, Joe, You can't do this. No one cared. No one cared enough about Joe Biden to say no, You can't do it all because he was the kindly old grandfather, standard bearer that they thought would be a good match against Donald Trump. What do you remember when they said that they Democratic Party was the party of the anti old white man. It's funny how and it's funny how a diverse group of people women, people of color whatever you want to call them, I don't fall into the identity nonsense that they do. But ah, very diverse group of people, plenty of women plenty of people of different ethnicities. And they boiled it down to the old rich white guys. Bernie invited. No, it's amazing. Well, George everything they were again George Sanders. Is there any way people can help if they want.

"For example, there's not much difference between. The Look of the x files movie and the X.. Files. Not Again I mean. Going back aways to yeah, there is a great similarity between the the files movie was obviously much more careful to fit in with X. files continuity. Whilst at the same time doing this date and and trying to appeal to a new audience but it did in a way ice feel was done with the sympathy for. The the content and the style of the TV show. Whilst at the same time, absolutely taking advantage of the format of cinema and the extra money the budget via the money. Yeah and often those those things are the things that will sink a film adaptation some of. The things I mentioned is like. When when they've taken something that is essentially a studio bound TV The that there's always this is raison d'etre has been created. Within an environment that is you know back then so much closer to being just one step away from theater. and. So all of its strengths are built around the fact that these are our studio shop things in the the the kind of Claustrophobia of it's in the tool keenness of it. Is, what makes it what people love why? Why they watch it and then you try and transfer that thing to the big screen but you go you know we're of cinema we can go out and we can do location shots. We can do special effect. We can basically just throw a shed load of money at this thing. And you drown tactfully the. Show was about in the first place. And the good thing about these do much movies? It didn't feel to me like it did that fair enough there. I definitely am hearing all those words in. Thinking Star Trek. Picture. You, know we get a shed load of money and. Let's go and there are something good that came out of that, and there are some things that came out of that and yeah. So I'm George Sanders. George Sanders puts in an appearance in this. I always like him. He is. Is The quintessentially British Easy Snyder. British guy. From. He used to play the same that you know that I didn't know before Roger Moore, yeah and the movies and the. WanNa say late thirties, early forties and his brother Tom Conway played the Falcon, which is basically the saint. For Different series of films but yeah, Yeah George Santa's. He he seemed to me was a big name. It was a big name on that screen. That was the only name I recognized apart from regular cast members ago and George. Sanders. Cool and then I figured he. So okay notwithstanding the fact that he played the saint in the series of films. Long long ago. It might be noted that George Sanders played Mr Freeze in the first season, and that Eli Wallach took over the role in season three, when premature was very pointedly, not invited back. But Nestle.
