"The efforts led by george rogers clark to secure the western territories although his actions were not much of a priority to the leaders of the revolution at the time his efforts helped to secure the northwest territory. What we today call the mid west to become part of the united states at the end of the war. If the british had held that area it very likely could have become part of canada and led to a very different historical outcome of the loser. Today's contest was british. Lieutenant governor henry hamilton. As i mentioned the main show he was taken prisoner and sent to williamsburg virginians deeply despised hamilton for his instigation of the native american warriors against virginia settlements. This was one of the issues that thomas jefferson wrote about in the declaration of independence in one of its most controversial lines. The quote is he has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers the merciless indian savages whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages sexes and conditions. Many critics today consider this passage to be racist because it refers to the indian warriors as savages. I don't want to get into the modern debate about that only reason. I'm bringing this line to. your attention. Is to note that. A whole lot of settlers of european descent at the time absolutely saw the native tribes that way at that time and they had many real world examples to substantiate that belief. And yes some americans revisited that same sort of savage cruelty on the native tribes as the victims. But of course when you're in the midst of a war it tend to focus on the enemies atrocities and excuse. Ignore your own. So my point is simply. Hamilton's policy of encouraging indian attacks on virginia settlements made him a particularly evil character. In the eyes of the virginians. Hamilton did not have a military rank..

"In a few cases. The warriors brought back live prisoners. One of those prisoners was a man named daniel. Boone whom hamilton met in detroit. Hamilton had hoped to keep boone a prisoner there but the indians who captured him refuse to turn him over instead. They wanted to accept wound into their tribe. Later that year boone escaped and returned to kentucky although london had decided. This territory was part of quebec virginia. Still claimed that all of this land was part of virginia. Many of the settlers. That had been attacked. We're composed of virginians moving west into what became kentucky as well as lower indiana and illinois. The british backed indian raids on these western lands demanded a response. The man in charge of responding was george rogers clark. He was the older brother. Of william clark from the famous lewis and clark expedition clark was born in virginia near charlottesville in seventeen fifty two when he was still a toddler. His family moved further west into the virginia frontier This was a particularly dangerous time. When france was stirring up indians to attack british colonists during the french and indian war so george remained back east with his grandfather where he attended the same school as james madison clark however only attended school for a short time he learned a trade as a surveyor and by age. Nineteen was surveying western lands for virginia settlers. He also took a commission as a captain in the virginia militia. In seventeen seventy four. Captain clark led a company in the frontier. "A player here on 7 20, WGN. Will the streets do have a name? And you know Chicago may be laid out in a great but our streets are far from boring. You know the tails behind how the avenues, the roads, the boulevards. Parkways and drives all got their names. You know, they're all have a story all into themselves. Now I've got a list. But I said to myself, um, what individual Had W GM really has a lot of worthless information and a lot of time on his hands. And I mean you could go through a few people here. Maybe, Tom, do you agree? I mean, Surat. I mean, he he knows I wouldn't say not necessarily information. No, no, no, no. He's got a lot of information. Land Decker. He's got a lot of both Both worthwhile and worthless. And we all do have a little s solely worthless. I'd say Roger Battisti, I'd say Roger banished to Roger you on the line. Thank you for calling the bad ish Internet information. Yes, Ha. May I help you, sir? You know what? I'm finding some gratification and like I could shut off your mike. But to slam the phone on you is gonna feel so much better. Oh, you know, you know what? Roger, I've been been hanging out on Saturday afternoons a little bit because he does the news here in the afternoon. And people been really digging that so I thought, Well, you know what? Like taking little breaks in the show and talking about all the serious stuff, vaccination and crime and everything else. We have to talk about that. Where? WGN radio But I want to educate in this next half hour little bit because there's so many streets we drive through every day. I don't know what these streets are all about What they're called. And white. Yeah. Especially people who are new to our town. You know, I think they may know a couple of streets around him. But a lot of people may have been driving around Chicago New to the city and looking up it street signs usually driving the wrong way down a one way street wondering, I wonder what the story is behind the name of this street. We probably have thousands. Thousands of people that are thinking that right at this very moment. I think you're right. We're gonna make people think about it. Yeah, it does. It does a little bit. It does a little bit. But here's Here's a big game. What do you see? Here? Addison Street. What do you immediately get to think of Oh, cubs, because right now, all right, Addison Street was named for British physician Dr Thomas Addison. Morning, Chicago magazine was a shy, brilliant British physician whose devotion is studying the adrenal glands was rewarded when his name was attached hello to a hormonal deficiency, Addison's disease on Addison himself a committed suicide in 18 60 in his connection to Chicago's unknown But that is what Addison Street is named. Armitage, a Chicago Mason, who have We have been the father of Alderman Edward Armitage and Little is known about him other than he was listed as a Mason in Chicago in 18 49. Now one other story says that the evidence was named for artist John Armitage. Jeffrey painted a famous painting of the Chicago fire. But sources point out to the name Armitage is early 18 68 in the record books, so that kind of puts him out of the picture. Yes, sort of picture time. What about Bill? No. Yes, sir. What? We loved Alma. I loved Alma because It's a first of all great street. It has such great businesses on it, and we love that history says that it came from the battle of Belmont. That was an 18 61 battle that marked grants. First time in command during the Civil War battle is that it's interesting where these names come from when they have nothing sometimes honor. Yeah, they don't come from Chicago time You had a different story for both. Yeah, that Roger, I don't know about that. That's not what I was told. I don't know about this. Ulysses s Grant guy. Uh, I mean, you know, he could have had some friends here in Chicago at the time. What I was told when I was told is that it's named after Jimmy Belmont, who used to sell Italian beefs loose underneath the Belmont. Ready? Yeah, right there. Underneath the Vita. Good guy, Jimmy Belmont. Yeah. You're inclined to believe that because there's nothing more Chicago than Italian beef, you know, that is absolutely correct. Cermak was Anton Cermak. He was the mayor. Chicago nearly 90. There's that's an easy one Clark Street named for George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War general who led the Illinois campaign in that's victories over British strongholds in the area. The street was named after the general in 18 33. Before that it was known as Green Bay Road because that road goes all the way up to Green Bay, Wisconsin. And and I love that her. I'm very familiar with especially the northern part of Clark Street as I had grown up in the area, especially living in Evanston after we moved from Chicago that Aziz Young child Do you know what Clark Street is called? Once you get across the border into Evanston know Chicago Avenue close to Chicago and then and then the Green Bay. The music it's upto much further on it eventually connects with Green Bay Road. "And a maser energy for Dean Richards. But we do have some of our same elements that we always do here on a Sunday morning program, I kind of feel like I'm a little part of it every week, even though I kind of set another room But in the big chair now, this is kind of cool, spacious area that I get today. This is definitely social distance. Yes, we're social distance through it. Yes. So standing by for the far flung forecast. I've been working on this to see if I can get a good middle name for you. Here is Dave Jebediah. Well, thank you, Mr Andrew Maser Esquire, And today we go to Southern Illinois, Far Southern Illinois, south of ST Louis. Not as quite not quite as faras Caro, but down there nonetheless, to CASS, CASS, Kia, Illinois and And if you remember when we were on with Dave Flyer on Friday morning, we talked a little bit about CASS CASS Kia fascinating place the population when it was in its heyday. Nearly 200 years ago, was around 7000. The population is now 14. Ah, this down goes back to the 17 hundreds, when the French Dominated, really this part of the country, Illinois, Indiana into Missouri and up further north, even into Minnesota, and in 17 41 when CASS CASS Kia was Kind of on the rise in that part of the country. King Louis, the 15th of France sent a bell Teo to CASS CASS Kia to be wrong in its church that they were building and the church still stands. The Bell is still standing also, and I mentioned the bell because it plays a very important role in American history. Some years later, because right after our group of gentlemen in Philadelphia declared independence from Great Britain and thus ushering in the Revolutionary War. We had a group of soldiers here in this part of the country that we're trying to get. This part of the territory away from the British. So we think of the Revolutionary War being fought on the East Coast, Mid Atlantic states. Well, there was activity going on and what we now call the Midwest CASS CASS. Kia was part of that. And in 17 78 General George Rogers Clark and his men Defeated the British in the in and around CASS, CASS, Kia and in the victory celebration. They rang that bell in the church on July 4th, 17 78. Interesting. I think everybody was ringing bells last night in July was one of those M 80. I heard Maura may tease than bells in my neighborhood. Of course, I've been told. I've been hearing bells are going off in my hand. Some other fascinating aspects about CASS CASS Kia. Also, it's been victimized and ransacked and ravaged by floods. Throughout the years in on the Mississippi River, And in fact, in the 18 hundreds of the flooding was so severe the Mississippi River actually shifted east into a new channel. So CASS CASS Kia Which was and still is right on the Mississippi is now the only point West of the Mississippi. But it's still part of Illinois even more fascinating and as a Missouri ZIP code, but in Illinois area Code 618 So, CASS Caskey has one fascinating place to be. Ah, Sunny day It's going to get hot down there to 78 right now in cash. Caskey of all right, let me ask you this radio geeky question because you know that for those that don't know all the stations that are East of the Mississippi River. With the exception of K D K in Pittsburgh. Every one of the stations starts with W. And if you're west of the Mississippi, it starts with K right. So would a radio station and cast Cascadia W. O R K Given the fact that radio didn't come about until the 19 twenties and thirties, and by that time it was west of the Mississippi. I would say it would be starting with a K because all the stations in ST Louis start with K. Yes, they do, except for one. But.

"You have one hundred thousand dollars with which to operate the pools, you're thinking, well, wouldn't that help, but I think what's really happening is we're kind of moving into the area of do we want these pools anymore. That's the real undercurrent here to use the proper expression is that are these are these pools necessary anymore because, you know, I think most of us can can look at our own child, and say, well, we didn't have community pools, available at us either the part closest to meet growing up was George Rogers park, and they have what we call it a baby pool. It was probably a foot, and it had a spray fountain. Whatever those big spray things, and that was pretty much. What? What we had in the summertime if a wanted to go, there was, like, our mom would say, go up to the park, if you want to get the water there like, oh, man. That's so far that he just turned on the hose and you figure out what you're gonna do. Nobody in our neighborhood at a pool. Get real. Oh, wait a minute. Somebody did there was one family. Probably. And then the four or five blocks away, who had a son who was an accomplished diver, and they had a pool. And we weren't we were never needed to go there. Least our family was because I was one of three hundred people and they were like, yeah. No, not the minor snow, too many people. They're probably having quiet parties over there. And we did. We were unaware of just keep it down. We don't want the miners to hear his five blocks away, if they show up the party's over. We're like the caddies in the Caddyshack film, who are jumping into the pool that one day they allow us to show up minors allowed between four and four zero eight PM. That's exactly right. That was the pool in our neighborhood that we knew about nowadays with drones, I guess you can figure that out a whole lot more easily, but George Rogers park does had one of those big spray things that look like a tree, this sprays water out and then fell into what we call the baby pool, and you can sit there and put your feet in there. That's like dude. I don't wanna walk there. That's, that's the people with the pool have five blocks away, and then we'll be like one two three four eight or nine blocks. No. That's to Fargo forget about it. Anyway, these pools are not going to get open because they cost so much money and I'm guessing they'll probably be filling those in because it takes the element of litigation away, as well as people hit their head. They fall a run. Don't run hit their head. Call the hammer. You know, all that kind of stuff that becomes another of those litigious problems for a city. I'm just guessing that, that's probably another thing they they'd like to quietly just go away, but the one hundred thousand dollars is going to go into this whole process of having the YMCA host community events, some of the south west downtown location, and they said rates comparable to what people paid access outdoor pools. That's what the mayor's office said today. So they're paying you have to pay to swim, yet, there was one hundred thousand dollars donated, I don't know how much do lifeguards get paid. Anyway. I'm sure they'll be able to splaine all that to us later in the show will take some audio from Leland Conway. Show where he's talking to a metro member of metro council about parking in the money's accrued there. And then how those are used in the city someone that's a little bit. Surprising to anyway. We'll keep an eye on this space to see how this pool money, one hundred thousand dollars in donations, by the way, the Papa John's people said that when you go to these swimming events that they're going to have ten of them. They have listed that they'll have free pizza. They said, if it costs you money to ride the bus to get to the place to go swimming. At least the pizzas free from Papa John's. So they're donating not only ninety thousand dollars but pizza on top of it. Real quick fam- odyssey cruises up their game. If you're thinking about maybe a romantic night, or maybe you just want to go ahead and enjoy the beautiful scenery of DC. You gotta take out the wavy redesigned, their ships from the refinements in lighting and textures to the remodeled dancefloor and bar space. I said bar and not to mention minimizing fuel consumption and emissions. Get a.

And as we were telling you earlier All Saints fans took the French quarter yesterday. Saints fans. Still steamed about the officiating the cost their team is spot in the Super Bowl so to protest. They did what their city does best. We're partying anyway for our saints. Fans filled the French quarter yesterday just hours before the kickoff in Atlanta. They wore sarcastic t shirts and carried black and gold umbrellas and homemade signs, ripping the NFL's judgment one. Saints fan told the report of the parade and protests would be better than what went on in Atlanta a Super Bowl protests concert in New Orleans yesterday was sold out. Officials course, peer to peer, no doubt. They missed the pass interference calls what put the Rams into the Super Bowl. But after the saints fans had the little parade of evidently, they went home and did watch the game because they were all over Twitter last night, saying just how much better they would have made the Super Bowl. "Shelter agents Joan witty or George Rogers and Collier, Bill Lor. Taylor guy in Marian, Arkansas. Welcome back to the bluff on the Highland. Strip. Home are the Tigers pre half and post game tonight. We're gonna be moving around to some various locations during our road games. This year Tigers wanted at Eighty-three Seventy-nine. Let's go live to New Orleans because I know there in route to the team charter they don't have a lot of time at Matt Dillon joined us by phone, Matt. It was an exciting game tonight. I looked several times early on like it was going to be a tiger blow out. But the the green wave we heard they were they were tough at home, and you've got to create some excitement because of the small crowds. But fortunately the Tigers picked up the win. You're exactly right. Yeah. Nemer Stein's how small places is like cracker. Hugs building. And once they kind of Gallow going. Yeah. They kind of play good basketball the last eight to nine minutes this game Tigers an eighteen point lead at one time early in the second half. And I don't know if it was a let up or just, you know, things happen. Once you get it a little more mental as a home team starts playing better. They look conference. And that's exactly what this chilling basketball team was able to do Kevin Jong tonight. Career high twenty five points for him the Chinese player the freshman, and then like Paul I talked about and write about him broadcast, fifteen points, thirteen rebounds, first career double double for him. And he came off the bench today really gave them a lift again, Jeff, rebounding. Was a problem in this game? But the Tigers being everybody's forty eight thirty five nineteen offensive rebounds. They are big basketball team. But but Jeff. They have all your wall, rebounding is desired positioning and everything else and the tiger. So we're not able to do that tonight. And that's something that's been kind of playing and his team to the last four or five games being out rebounded, and especially on the offensive glass. And that's something that needs to be corrected. Only your positive sides, Jeremiah Martin had twenty seven points today for him. And he boy first-half he just put on a clinic. Right shows you why why he's a player first team all the caliber because he can take over a game. And he did in that first half Thornton rainier Thornton with twelve today rebounds. As I mentioned earlier than Davenport. I thought I had a very solid game as well. Some other guys, and you know. Foul trouble. He started tonight, and he didn't do very much Britain a little bit office. Well, very unusual game for six points. But he still got to win on the road just enough to get out of here. And that's the big thing. Because now you go three and one in the league and come back. So that's a very positive thing. And you got to have games like this during years. Yeah. For years know, you've got snakes out on the road. Like this to Jason girls at the end of the year mad. I know sometimes you you guys and you get to speak with with the coach a little bit. Either the game on air any sense from from penny in the staff of the a little bit more encouraged denied the little bit happier. Maybe about the effort and the intensity because we you know, we did our post game with penny. The other night, we didn't know what was going on in that press conference room. And then we saw the comments came out the next day that boy, it was a different little bit different press conference. And maybe kind of what what he told some in the interview he wasn't happy with the effort at all the other night. And you get a sense he was a little more pleased with it tonight. Yeah. I really do. I think he's a little more pleased with the effort in. I think he was happy that the team was able to generate enough to get that that played in the course, hold off a two line. And anytime, I think you go on the road it certainly different quesion. I think he wanted to see how the same would respond, and they get challenged did at the end they make big plays MAURICE came in at nine hundred a couple of free throws in a big basket as well. You know, Martin got the ball and he understood the game. All right. The entity did broken there and got a big basket. It was there just some guys didn't play to their ability tonight. And that's something I think, you know, you gotta be dressed, you know, hopefully later on the year. But right now, you've got to get everybody in Saint can still, you know, the rotations their Antoine Jones. Couple of big free throws as well. You know, you love him stepping up when he has to he kinda struggled before that was there. I didn't think they were flat or anything like that. I just thought you gotta give him some credit at half. Sometimes the home team especially down in this little building. Matt one big thing with a win tonight. I know it's still early. But it's nice to see yourself up near the top of the standings. Now, you're a big five tie for second place to half game out of first, and that's better than where you were a couple of weeks ago at a one to one mired in the middle. Maybe bottom third of the pack. It's better to work from the top the bottom. It is a big thing as well. They.
