Inside Washington's Name Change

"John How's it? Goin'? It's been a little bit busy. You might be having the busiest off season well, always busy right now to all the deck Prescott stuff, but but you pretty busy. It was on? July six and a couple of things happen. I told my wife said. I'm about to work in eighteen hours a day on July six. NFL. Opposite in what is going on, and it turns out. That was actually probably a pretty good day in hindsight. John covers the Washington DC based NFL TEAM FOR ESPN Since. We are talking about names I. Do feel it's necessary to point out your John Crime I- Amina climbs two different names not. Although I will say had some relatives. Years back did like genealogy, and at one point, it was kind real in Europe, so we could be related I. Just want to put that out there well. I do get mistaken for you. Know I think there's a similarity so. So back to the name at hand. John The Washington football team announced on Monday after much speculation many reports that they will be retiring their nickname and logo after completing review that began on July third. This has been a conversation for a very very long time, but the team's principal owner Daniel. Snyder has been on the record. Saying the team would never in all caps literally change its name, and then here we so before we get to why this happened. And what's GonNa Happen Next? I just want to ask you as a beat reporter. Did you ever think this day would come? Well. Let me let me step back from that pre. George Floyd, no, because in the past. We've had a deal with this topic many times over the years especially in the last seven. I think the rise of social media has kept it alive, but during that time the plan the strategy here for the reds for Washington was to write off the storm. Just weather the storm. Go go to reservations connect with native Americans and do something like that then when you saw the social unrest this year. You started to seep in your head like they're gonNA. Come after them again and I'll tell you when it really really thought they work to be about. Run at this time was. There was a stretch it about a week where George Preston Marshall, who original owner of the of Washington? And he named the team, and he moved the team from Boston, to Washington will statue was outside their old stadium are k. well. They removed the statue, not the team, but a company in DC that owns that land, so you tweet that out and I'd say. Say Ninety percent of the mentions after that on twitter, where about what about the what about the name? What about the name? The next day team says they're going to retire bobby? Mitchell's number only retired one of the number in their franchise history, so they tweet that out and I wrote a story. Put out there. What about the? What about the name? I've. There's just becoming way too much of everything. They did route this. If they put out a statement about George Floyd about black lives matter, it would always come back to their team name. It was to a level that I hadn't seen before. It does seem though at least from the outside that the true catalysts the thing that pushed this over the edge was the teams naming sponsor Fedex and Fedex asiyo. WHO's a minority owner coming out on the record against the name? Yes and I'm going to back up a couple of weeks before that because there some parallel timelines that led to I think this occurrence and one of which was Dan Snyder had reached out I was told by multiple that he had reached out to the League a few weeks before that, and had already started to engage in conversations with the NFL, Roger Goodell about a possible name change along that same time there's the group of eighty seven shareholders and investors were combined six hundred twenty billion dollars in the lead by investor advocacy groups, so they're the ones who targeted Fedex Habsi company Nike Bank of America. It wanders sponsors. If you don't sever your ties here, you know. That's what they want to sever their ties, and so that's what they're pushing. When Fed, ex came out with the statement. That's when when people I've talked to said. That's when they knew it was over. I WANNA to talk about those groups. All of the activists who've been working tirelessly on this for years, but I thought it might be helpful to break down why the name exists in the first place. Where does it come from? The name when it first. Started I guess or was mentioned throughout history was about refer to the color skin and there is. I've got her who worked for the Smithsonian magazine, went back and researched it and found that it was way that native Americans would refer to other to differentiate themselves from. Whites or blacks or whomever else was here, so they referred themselves the redskins than it seemed to segue into a negative connotation, which you know, you'd see posters or read about posters, offering rewards for bringing fifty dollars for bringing the scalp, redskin or bringing Redskin, in which meant the scalp, so it certainly segue into something. That was a negative connotation. So how did it come to be the name of this particular NFL franchise? That's a great question, so we go back to nineteen thirty two and for anybody listening I was not covering the team at that time so nineteen who? Shared a stadium with baseball's Boston braves, so they were called. The Boston braves the following year. They moved to Fenway Park with the Boston Red Sox, so the story that that no his come about from that is that they wanted some sort of. Alliteration with the Red Sox, and so they went with the Redskins, but they also had a coach Lone Star Dietz and several native American players on the roster, George Preston Marshall said he was naming it basically in part because they had a native American coach. Now there's controversy over long star deeds whether he was actually native American up, but that was the given explanation at that time.

"You're next. A nice sagar right ahead. Yeah. Hi, Dan. Have mainly a question for you. I'm certainly no legal authority on ethnic slurs. But maybe you could tell me where in is the main objection basis for the term Redskins is considered to be a two to racial it's considered it's considered by some as considered by some to be And ethics slur that because Indians were called in the old days, them Redskins and I think you know what you watch a Western and Redskins coming over here or whatever. So I mean, you know and again, but then you take a word like the Braves. I don't see how you can. You can see the Braves, but I think that once it's a slippery slope, Jeff, Minnesota Viking is that an epic slur against Scandinavians? Well, I think arguably you would have some people who would be offended by that because they would say that the Viking stirred up this. You know the leaf Erickson The explorers kind of the contemporaries of Christopher Columbus. I mean, they they weren't what you'd call Renaissance men, You know, they didn't enjoy opera and ballet. Well, well, I just sort of a dame, perhaps on an alternative. Then how would you like to be a fan of the New Orleans Saints? And be someone who's an atheist or a agnostic? No, I hear what you're saying. I had problems with the until friend somebody. Everything is going to defend and thing innocuous enough Not to offend someone. Yes. So that's why I think maybe we should just call them the Washingtons or the Now you know your name and now your name and after a team after guy that there's a slave owner in Washington, right you I've heard political correctness carried so far as to openly object to the game of chess. Raises. Why is that? Well, frankly, it's because White always moves first. Well, I think that's an excellent point that they've made. Ah, what do you expect? Because the folks the PC people, I never going to be happy. I mean, they They can't sleep at night. They think about their next cause. And you know again and get really hear this. I mean, I just I think of all of these different different team names. I mean, The Oakland A's I mean, you know, what are we talking about there? I mean, maybe we're talking about you know, the I don't know it's you know, I don't know. It makes me uncomfortable and makes me uncomfortable. You know that? I think I have a right to know what What's your answer to this Well is they said we need to call them. Maybe we just call them by. We pick collars. Um, I don't know. You know, there's all sorts of colors that we don't think about. You know, there's different colors lime. Sometimes colors have connotations to write. It would be very careful, fellas. We would pick very careful about wayward picked yes or some some collars that no one would really know. You know? No much of a brain. Alright, It's really it's really gotten quite Ah, ridiculous. I think it is. But it Sze thie America of 2020 and so we need to get used to it. And, well, just just so you know, I'm in the corner of The voice of reason. Thank you know, you generally. Thank you, Jeff. Appreciate. Okay, Dan. Good night. Let's goto. We're going to go to a Michael up in New Hampshire. They don't even have Ah. A major league team in New Hampshire. That's that's terrible. I Michael, how are you? Very good. How you doing tonight? I'm doing great. So what? What name would you like to assigned to the formerly the team formally known as the red Skins. I think I have a winter. How about the carpetbaggers? The carpetbaggers. Well, there's a lot of senators who called carpetbaggers. Yes, I think it fits it perfectly. And then I think the people would definitely back that. Yeah, and well, The other thing, too, is when you think about it. They thought they were blow in from Boston, The Washington Redskins. Work, but the Boston Redskins in 1936 and by pride of that they were the Boston Braves. You know when they when they play the races if they weren't in Boston long I mean, the NFL was just Forming in those days. And so sky George Preston Marshall, who apparently himself was a racist, just taking his name or his statue down, Thank God that was done. You know the carpetbaggers that that has a nice ring to it. I could see the thing is the winner. The symbol on the side of the helmet could be a you know, you know, one of those carpet bag things that people with the carpetbaggers war that's perfect. That's perfect. Nice job, Michael. Nice very much When you're going to get a major league team up there, you I don't know. Like, you know, people like talking it. But like we're just too small or too close to Boston, But I'm nothing. I'm Irish descent just like you. And I just want to let you know that my feelings are hurt. With the Um Philip, Fighting Irish. The Celtics leper con? No, no, the fighting Arceneaux today. Oh, my God. I could not agree more on that. I mean, Absolutely. It's lovers, not fighters. Yes, yes. And you know very a pugnacious pose that I've seen the actual The the emblem, the symbol. Um, the symbol I should say of the team, and it's like this pugnacious little Irish guy with his dukes up like he was just the fresh from a bar room brawl there, I say, And I think the I think that has to change. One of my brothers believe it not has a tattoo on his. You know what? Let that one go. Alright. Thanks, Michael. My friend Every night night. Goodnight. Thanks to joining us, Herb in South Dakota. "If you don't you can yell at me and say this is an interesting but I was reading this morning about the history of the Redskins name like where it came from, because it is kind of fascinating. That George Preston Marshall took the Braves name. They were what they were the Boston Braves. They played up in Boston, and they played at Braves Field where the Boston Braves play. So that's why they were the Braves, which was very common back then for football teams to take the name or a similar name of the baseball team that was going on for a while. Look at the Bears look at the giant's when you think about it with the New York baseball giants. And what happened is they hike the rent at Braves field, according to football perspective was interesting to read. They hike the rent and rather than pay, George Preston Marshall said, We're going to find a new place to play. And so obviously he's bitter is not going to call them the Braves anymore than I played at Braves field, and so they ended up playing at Fenway Park, and they picked the name Redskins. The teams head coach was known as a native American Lone Star Dietz. So they had the Native American imagery. Boston actually end up signing Native American players. They had this Native American chief logo already printed. And so since you started playing in the Red Sox names they went with Redskins, and the thought is it was designed to make Bostonians think of the Red Sox Red Sox Redskins. There you go. That's how it kind of happened. Interest. It's It's weird to think how back in the day you're naming football teams have to baseball teams, but it was so common that no, you're right. And some of it obviously stuck and some of them lied. He said. Somebody you know, cities, you know, bear, you know, Cubs bears Ah, tigers lions, You know that kind of thing you write. So even if it's not exactly the kind of a rock look of it, so when they moved to Washington, I mean, they could have changed the name that could have gone with senators. They could've followed the Washington baseball team. Thought they liked the name Redskins. They kept it in state ever since, until until at some point next week, when it's changed to whatever it's changed him. We'll keep an eye on it. We'll come back with more your calls. 877337 66 66 billion.

"Okay. Players in the NBA. Wow, that's that's that's him a revelation. My goodness be sure to catch live editions of the odd couple with Chris Broussard Rob Parker Weekdays at seven PM Eastern Four PM Pacific on Fox sports radio and the iheartradio APP. There's an interesting story that came out today. The statue in Washington the statue of the former redskins owner George Preston Marshall was removed from RFK stadium. So, he was against, he was the former owner, but he was against integrating the franchise in the early nineteen sixties. So props to them for removing it. But I. Here's what I'm going to say as we see all of these confederate statues. Flags being removed now you you see the statue of the redskins owner. There was another one I can't remember the college. I think it was a college perhaps where there was another statue removed. I say go. Let's go the whole way. And start changing the names of these teams that are these nicknames that are Indian nicknames and look I'm not an expert on native American culture. But I I would say leave it up to the native Americans. But! Redskins is a racial slur. That'd be like the. Hat calling the team. The say ambles or the end words. I mean that's what it is, and my thing is this. If we really are against racism. You can't just be against racism that affects black people. You have to be against racism that affects all of the people that have been hurt by it in this country and the native Americans clearly. Were hurt by it. And so the only difference Allison. Obviously, there were different forms of oppression. Slave reverses annihilation darn near annihilation. But. The only difference in why the names of these native these native American nicknames remain. Is because native Americans by and large don't have the power in American society that blacks do so. Blacks have the power to make noise. We have become part of popular culture through our athletes are entertainers politicians? We have actors in the whole nine yards we have. People who do we have enough power to make noise to complain to March to protest and we have enough numbers being twelve thirteen percent of the population. So, they wouldn't dare have a team nickname a black slur at this point. And now they're removing all these other elements of the culture that have been offensive to black people, but we gotta do the same thing for the native Americans they just don't have the population to make a lot of noise about it or the power, but if we're really against. Him How can we pull down these symbols of black Oh Prussian, but not pulled down these symbols of native American oppression. And I don't look I. Don't know about the seminoles. Is that you know again I would leave it up to the native Americans. But if the native Americans, I know, some of them are differ in their opinions, but get their leaders. To African Americans. Get our leaders to speak on stuff. Get their leaders if they're leaders feel like these things are offensive. The braves the Indians the Redskins, maybe even the chiefs. If they feel like they're offensive change the names period and I think it should be. There should become a part of the conversation. This is interesting. Chris I gotta be I gotTA. Plead ignorance here I never looked into what the name redskins beans. Did you ever think to look it up or anything? Well, just think about it, though Redskins, it's like saying black skins are yellow skins, or I mean we know the contentious relationship to the least between the whites and the and the native Americans. When I grew up. Honestly you know it was the stereotype of scalping. Indians and things like that. Those were stereotype. Even Cater Bait yesterday I learned. Something I'd never knew that's enough I. Had you not the black? The black players didn't know and that's my point. If we are eliminating stuff like that and I'm not saying we shouldn't, but that's minor stuff right there. There's a lot of mine. American there is a lot of minor stuff, and this is interesting because we're seeing. We're trying to seem like. We're getting rid of all these symbols. Guy That you said they were moved to statue. George Preston Marshall, so he and a group bought the Boston braves, and they ha. They had also the braves and the Redskins, so there was some kind of connection for them to native Americans now I don't know why. If you're naming a team, you would name it the braves and the reds. Would you name it after I mean most the bears, the tight you know, most of these names are are yeah. Boy. I guess cowboys is. Doesn't make sense to me my only pushback and again I'm not saying this shouldn't be done is. If, we're trying to tell these young athletes. Hey, Dwayne Haskins quarterback of the redskins. You shouldn't suit up this fall until they changed the name of the Redskins, and then we pit the young. african-american quarterback and his whole team will, it wouldn't be a
