National Mole Day with Andrew Geary
"Hi Paul this is Andrew in today is National Day. Now my first thought this day is in honor of Pucks Itani Phil, but then are moles and ground hogs, the same underground inhabitant. Or could it be honoring one of the greatest land air battles of all time went to bias the mole attack tiny town in Rocketeer George Michael saved the day on arrested development. Now. I know Netflix puts it Tada on everything but did they also put their stamp on National Day? I look forward to you sending me straight Paul. I Fan true according to the Internet malls in groundhogs are often lumped together in discussions regarding wildlife problems that result in turn up damaged landscaping. This is because they both utilized tunnel systems and caused damage to plants, roots, and beautiful lawns but that is where the similarity ends, but I severely digress. Today. October twenty third is national. Mall Day which has nothing to do with furry creatures. Today's all about chemistry specifically avocados number, which is the number of particles in one mole of substance the numbers approximately six point zero, two times ten to the twenty third. Get it ten, twenty, three. If you WANNA learn how to celebrate this day. Look no further than the lab out loud podcast were in one episode they discuss mold day and how they have celebrated it. You could also research Amadeo Gaudreau and put out a social media post using the National Mall. Day, Hashtag. My guest today is Andrew. Geary. Andrew is the host of the seismic sound all podcast now prepare yourself for a second seismic sound off episodes our in depth conversations in applied geophysics intimidated yet. Luckily, for you, I asked Andrew. Where someone like me who try to cheat his way through high school science classes could start. He wrote back the following and I quote our episodes tend to range from various associations, specific highlighting our annual conference to broad scientific subjects, addressing racism and geosciences. But the best place generally to start is our episodes focused on humanitarian projects we manage here is one looking at building a canal Peru that's a good start. Unquote. For Third Recommendation Andrew Sticks with science and recommends an episode from the Your Day podcast called what whales on nine eleven. While many of us reeling from the terrorist attacks in the United States something very unique was happening underwater. For today's extra all's I'll let you decide if you would prefer watching Netflix's with Andrew or May. We, have had A. Exchange about the German show dark. I loved it but punted few episodes into season three because it was just too confusing. Andrew has tried to me to keep going but remember his brain works a lot better than mine. But one thing should be said, it seems we both are big fans of the blue family. Come back on October thirtieth for maybe one of the most divisive pieces of candy ever.

So I don't know and in the management just said may I search your voice out because there'll be no I'm gonna lose this job and you won't get the next one. So he was telling me about this and I was in they're treating him for back pain halfway through the treatment. He was talking to many guys. Oh scary says, can you hear how deep my voice is gone? Like? Oh, yeah. Okay. He said no seriously says Moss only goes to this deep when I'm really relaxed. He says acupuncture has relaxed me and that shown my voice. Yeah, and then we got his voice to eight shows a week. Nice any went into played phantom for a couple of years and I had a phenomenal career brilliant, but it was purely by chance. Yeah. I was treating him for back pain. And it relaxed him so much that it took the stress out of his voice. It was accumulating and he was able to see again. And then I heard a backing vocalist called Tessa Niles. It was very Clapton's backing vocalist. This is just this is a a name-dropper list is endless. So then Clapton used too long to whole month. Yeah of concerts at the Albert Hall and I got a call from Chester saying it's lost his voice and he was only three shows into his twenty dates and I went down there also, give it a go. Yeah only swear on his life that he was hitting notes. He couldn't hit before and he went on and finished the other Seventeen shows without taking a day off. I tell you how long it's a nightmare as an artist when you have I've had I've had to cancel a show on a talk once. Yeah, and I thought I just moved show, you know, we just listened the amount of hassle that causes the catalog One show so if you're three or four in and he's saying he's just about to lose his voice. That is a bad scenario. Yeah, but acupuncture and massage help that as well, you know, then I started getting you to Weber more than I'll go down to trading an amazing sex often. It's called David Sanborn. I we were doing Peak flow lung capacity. So he was doing off peak flow meter blowing into it. See what lung capacity had then we'll be using acupuncture and they're doing the peak flow meter again, and we were measuring the increase in his lung volume. There was around the same time that I got to him through cuz they did the soundtrack to Lethal Weapon. Nice. Yeah, so, you know, there was Michael Ball there was Colm Wilkinson. There was tons is Rafael. I mean, it's just you look at the original cast of Les Miserables. Yeah put on Peter polycarp. I mean they've all gone on to do some really crazy stuff. Yeah, and I was working with him and then there was one theater in the West End and then chess which was written by the guys from ABBA. Yep. Which Elaine Paige was who I just saw yesterday off. Thirty-five years old. Oh wow, and then I saw her playing in The King and I and then all the stuff that she's done in the West End. Yeah, then the guy who was the lead part in Les Miserables went up for Phantom of the Opera and he got the job know cuz interestingly at the time he was doing eight shows a week 8:00. Okay, and this is what I came across acupuncture for the voice. And this is why I went on I've never heard that you have a voice. The reason I went on tour with George Michael was not treated we did have a back history, but it was more treat his voice. How do you treat the choice if I could you stick needles in the throat? No, no, no some sometimes near but usually it's just it's from but wherever your stress accumulates and for performers often the stress accumulates in the voice often. They lose their voice often because of the whole stress response. I say they're so quick diversion. I when when my mother passed I was in the middle of releasing a single month. So, you know one of them we had many conversations, but she said to me do not she's happy going cuz she knows that I'm the last in the family that I'll be. Okay. So please just make sure that I took a hundred percent. So after her passing, like I just threw myself really deeply into the music. I gave a hundred percent to music and as a result, I didn't quite mourn properly cuz I was too busy, you know being on stage smiling that so I didn't I don't think gave myself the the right amount of time so about five years later when it was no longer even a thing in my mind as such, you know, the the morning process is not okay. My mother's got a mess up, you know, just getting on with work.

I went back to my clinic. I was sitting in my clinic that afternoon and the certificate that he gave me when he taught me. I thought you fell off my wall and smashed on the floor and within five minutes. I had a phone call from his wife saying Peter just died when I went there that morning. Like I said. Are you right? He says now he says off you're really strange. If you're very hard and you must have known that something wasn't quite right. He felt odd he felt odd and then he died a few hours afterwards. Oh man, that's a bit of a story but you know just fell down, you know, but he passed on the secret before he left. So I really I've got thank Pizza. Yeah pizza if you're in a liter of this car ever the room, thank you. You passed on some great knowledge after all that's what we've got. Right? So yeah, that's what I loved about him was you were saying no airs and Graces Give it a go and if it works great and if it doesn't we gave it to go? Yeah, you know, the only thing there is to lose your pain. That's the only thing that can happen. All right. So at the point when you started doing your your work in osteopathy and acupuncture were you working in someone else's Clinic? I'm trying to get the point where when did the Gary trainer Clinic come to life with I did my acupuncture training and working and sorry. Okay, and I was living in North London so long. I just remember when I finished my training I didn't have to drive down to South London all the time. Then I had a friend who was an actor the my actual break into the entertainment industry was acting not music off and was it I knew an actor who was working for the Royal Shakespeare company and he arranged for me to come and meet the company manager. He thought that would be a good contact for me. So I came in with the company manager way through what I did. He said well, if we going to have need we'll give you a call. I heard nothing for months. And then there was a production of Rich dog food at the Barbican Royal Shakespeare company who was an actor called engineer share who's now known as Sir Anthony sheer and he that you've won the Olivier your award for best actor. And in fact, it was funny. He played after playing Richard the third he played there was a film play called tow truck song Trilogy torch song Trilogy torch song Trilogy. Yeah about this very Camp guy and I remember when you go to award he says, I think I'm the first actor to play both a king and queen in the same season, and I've worked with Anthony probably on every show he's done since then, which is probably 35 years ago..

"It's like where our own where our boxes the bodies is on. Dr. Yeah, you know I said this to someone before cuz back in the day I wanted to do I studied biology chemistry and physics. I don't want it to be a pharmacist. That's why I wanted to be. Okay. Well I wanted to be a doctor but later on I was like, okay. Got a bit much. I'll try and be a pharmacist and I had a place to do Pharmacy. But one thing that always used to amaze move biology doctors surgeons people manipulate the body, they're not actually. Doing the magic, you know, when you think of assert when I used to think of a surgeon, it's like, oh they're saving someone's life. They're doing this. They are in that day of learn how to bring say a broken bone closer to that. It's it's off the part where it needs to be. Yeah. I don't actually fuse the bones together know what they do and the body just the whole whole all of the work. The body knows what to do. What sells should do what and I sell isn't going to be purchased in your knee knees going to produce a nice L. And your eyes going to produce a nice. I've always thought like how do these things work to get like so complex work together and they you know, what's what so really all you're doing is assisting the body in doing what it thinks should do exactly or in a lot of cases knows it should do. Yeah, you know, so so the art of a practitioner is to work out where is the person act as far as getting better all by themselves and then why I mean, you might ask some questions you might put them through some ranges of birth. Went and you can go you know what this person's 50% better than not 10 out of 10 in pain because they they walked in here people tend out of ten years you get carried in there. Okay, so when I could walk in there and they sort of you know, you sort of think like this is getting better already than we look at the chart of physical therapy techniques and go okay for someone who's half way better this technique. Let's take make this technique is suited for a person who's at that stage of healing. So you just find if someone's five you find some techniques for 5 to move them down a fool and that's.

Trump tried to reassure America — and the stock markets had the biggest one-day drop in history
"Since returning from India yesterday president trump has been trying everything he can to try and show that he is on top of this corona virus outbreak. And yesterday. That's why we saw him in the briefing room. Trying to reassure the public but also trying to reassure the markets which is a key point here as he faces reelection this year. Now the question of course is. How does this go forward today? The president trying to reassure the markets but again another selloff tonight growing concern here in the US over the corona virus outbreak fuelled by rising fears of pandemic US markets suffering losses for the sixth day in a row while the risks to the American public remains low as the president said. Yesterday we're ready. We're ready for anything. Vice President Mike Pence on his first day in charge of the Federal Response Looking to reassure the public and calm the markets announcing several additions to the Corona Virus Taskforce Treasury Secretary. Steve MNUCHIN chief White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and ambassador. Deborah burks the US Global AIDS coordinator. An Obama appointee at the top. More confusion are you meeting the test? Scores leading the task force Will Continue to rely on the secretary's role as chairman of the Task Force and the leader of Health and Human Services he bought. We've known each other for many years worked very closely on the users and the president has every confidence in the secretary as I do that. Decision coming after trump returned from India on Wednesday and grew frustrated with health and Human Services Secretary Alex as our amid spiralling markets and lawmakers drilling his cabinet officials. Mike is going to be in George Michael Report back to me. But he's got a certain talent for their sow. Several people close to pence fear. It could spell disaster putting him in an impossible position as health. Experts warn the situation will inevitably get worse. Pence also has a controversial record combating an HIV outbreak as governor of Indiana in two thousand fourteen. This is truly a crisis that is centered on a crisis of drug abuse pence initially opposed a CDC recommended needle exchange program which could have helped prevent the spread of the virus house speaker. Nancy Pelosi says she told pens. She didn't think he should be in charge. Unfortunately up until now. The trump administration has mounted opaque and often chaotic response to this outbreak. This as a patient testing positive for corona virus in northern California is now the first use case believed to have been contracted from exposure within a US community. I don't think it's inevitable. President trump contradicted. The health officials tasked with fighting the illness at Wednesday's news conference. No I don't think it's I don't think it's inevitable. I think that is a chance that it could get worse as a chance. It could get fairly substantially worse but nothing's inevitable a stark contrast to officials who warned the situation will inevitably get worse. The degree of risk has the potential to change quickly and we can expect to see more cases in the United States. We do expect more cases and this is a good time to prepare and wolf. The vice president is now in charge of efforts to contain the spread of Corona virus. Sources are also now telling us that the vice president is in charge of all messaging efforts around this effort as well that means that any statements or any TV appearances from administration officials needs. I go through the vice president's office before they can go forward. Of course this comes after there's been a lot of mixed messaging from trump administration officials in recent days. But one thing that it's not going to solve is the president. Just as he did yesterday contradicting his own officials. Both all right Jeremy. Thank you Jeremy. Diamond over at the White

"Say you now join me standing outside Christie's after the sale the Jewish. Michael, Sal is just happened on. I'm here with any sure whose London-based correspondent for the newspaper. And he what happened in the sail? White sail heads at days meeting, all solos sixty Ron lots sold. There was an McKean piece. It was offered at the end to make sure that all I sold in the name of charity. Of course, I describe it probably as a sale of two halls that was it was a winning night betrays the it was really the Tracy and George Michael show nine of her works on the block tonight, eight of which went over the high estimates, and it was a record for Tracy for for painting. Tonight's hurricane which he painted in two thousand seven went for three hundred and fifty thousand Hamma above highest amount of one hundred and eighty thousand it's really intriguing because the wholesale has been set up the listeners just heard. This interview with Paolo from Christie's in which she really really emphasized this relationship between Tracy and George Michael, and that was very much the theme of the night, wasn't it. Because for instance, juicy was doing the the Chenier he was saying it's been Tracy's night a great night for Tracy. There's been a lot of press about Tracy's relationship with George and the story goes that that she introduced him to the Y B as but it seems that Christie's Israeli sort of pitted her the nucleus of this collection. In a sense of the is sort of had held the rain. I will gimmicky sales have done the they had the Damien Hirst two thousand eight peaceful inside my head forever sale. They had the Bowie collection the Borno red auctions. So this sort of really seems to be Christie's emulating southern relationship with Damian and putting Tracy's center and enter good effective fair to them. I mean, it seemed to place into off tonight. It's interesting interesting. If you will symbolic lot of night was this love heart pace by by choice, which is a love heart. With the words George loves Kenny in the middle. So it was in a way in eating capsulated in one work will Christie's with trying so hard to do which was to promote this very personal engagement between the y be as and which Michael. Yeah. That Neo and actually went for two hundred and eighty thousand there was sort of a bidding war between a woman in the very who couldn't identify against Christie and Albert who who sale this is the new co-head of. Whoa. Here at Christie's. But it was just showing the record for Neo. But I mean, it really did some up the Ning. I was quite you know, it was really really, well, I think there were enough of George Michael fans in in in the in the Sal room cheering and clapping and really egging. This this work on. In stark contrast to Tracy is Damien Hirst. And I think it was you know, if you wanna touring Hearst's prices at auction than they confirms what we think is a bit of a trend that he's works are actually getting very disappointing results auction. Yeah. I mean, the the beginning of the sale five of the six Damian Hurst works were given a last-minute third party guarantee, which means Christie's found effectively found someone who is willing to pay a minimum price guarantee a price for the Hearst's. And that reflects the fact that they probably thought it wasn't going to be much bidding in the room on the phones or online. So they secured by beforehand for five of the six lots which is very telling so really a sale of two halls in that the two most highly estimated worth two bucks by Damien Hirst who formaldehyde 's estimated go for between one and one point five million. They both went. For around seven hundred and fifty thousand and I think one of them went on the single bid where most likely to govern tall. This is interesting. This isn't it because you know, last week that there was some sales in London contemporary sales where? Some Damien Hirst one was bought in is that right, and then others again had disappointing sales. So this is as I say trend. Yes, her I mean, it's been quite widely reported that collectively making losses on earth work over the last couple of years and last week's contemporary evening sales for that out yet. There was one that was with Joran hair at Christie's spot painting one that went on soda Phillips next night and think further painting, which which went unsold in their days Dale, so it's it's not looking right for Damian's market right now. There was very interesting comparison that we could make tonight because there was a work in this sale. As those mentioned in the interview Powell early Rome that was actually in southern be selling two thousand eight what happened to that. Yeah. The what was it was it's yes, it's foam. Aldehydes work is a both heart with dove wings on it with a dagger going through the middle of the heart. And that was bought by George four three hundred thirteen thousand Saudis in two thousand eight a decade later, we're seeing that go for two hundred sixty thousand so that's a loss of fifty around fifty thousand pounds. I can't do the percentage in my head. But it was offered with a much lower estimate than ten years ago. It was offered tonight hundred twenty two hundred and eighty thousand ten years ago, it was off at one hundred fifty two hundred thousand so that tells you something about whether the auction houses pitching his market prepared to take a hit. And indeed that were did take a hit on on what it was bought for ten years ago. One of the things that we've been talking about is there is this idea Russo George Michael premium that is is the all these words lightly to fetch higher prices because of their previous owner, can you give. Any sense of with that was ineffective night. I think you can definitely say there was a premium in effect tonight. There was another bidding on the phones and online. Indeed. There was a very active by in Belgium. One in Texas one in Nevada wonders whether the palms casino resort was was bidding on the Hearst. I think that that reflects that there was there was interest from people who might not be the usuals the usual crowd here at Christie's. And I think that was really reflected in the lead up to the sale, you know, that they had this the sour in the galleries of open to the public and you've seen a real mix of people here at Christie's in the lead up to the sale. I was here on Wednesday afternoon. They were die hard fans here, and in George Michael twenty-five live t shirts, you know. This is this is breaking the MO for Christie's. I think good thing. Because these these things can be stuffy in the sarum Fairwinds can be full of the same same faces. There were some usual suspects. I think white cube underbid on number of works. But I think it was a real mixed tonight. One of the things that was pointed out to me by somebody at Christie's. And I think this is actually an accurate point is that we did they work Hughes around the block to visit this exhibition, and I think actually it is one of the first public moments that people have had the chance to actually celebrate George Michael's life as opposed to mourn, his death is that your impression when you came to visit the show definitely I think there was a real sort of diehard. Contingent. And it was it was refreshing. And there was a real. There was sort of the they were playing George Michael's music. They they pumping out one. But there was still a subdued atmosphere with a sense. There was a sort of sense of morning, but also celebration of this aspect of of this very public figures life, which hitherto largely made public. Some people might say that the collection might be mourned. It's not the most unique perhaps it was it was it was put together really over space. The sale tonight was ninety five percent ports between two thousand six two thousand and eight around Hof, but boy in two thousand and seven this is a collection that was put to put together very quickly some might say without much connoisseur ship, but you know, the white as they weren't the most of subtle of of people, you know, fuck off and die. You slag is is next limb. Case in point, then if we can say on the poll calls, but that is the toilet of a work. So you know, I it's it's an in your face grouping. And it did well did well tonight another thing which seems to me to be important about that Neil. And but Tracy sold such a high price, the George loves Kenny is to a certain extent Kennedy Kasese role in this collection. Seems to have been rather written out the picture in this cell, George Michael collection everywhere, but it was very much a potent this collection. Yes. Indeed, Kenny was dealer and major influence in in George Michael's collecting. And it's interesting to see what's going to happen to this money. It's my understanding that it's going to George Michael's philanthropic work, but the charities exempt charities haven't been decided yet they wanted to keep that quite flexible so to sum up tell us what the top line figures for this sale world. So the sale in a total of nine point three million, and that's with with fees against a highest of eight million. So it's a great deal for charity. And I think that's what we need to in mind, and he thinks so much for joining us. Thank you. We'll

Amazon's patent for caging workers was "bad" idea, exec admits
"Robots are going to take over. That's big prediction automation going to be taking more jobs than anything else. Probably why. And then you see this story. Well, you see the picture Amazon. This was written up in the Boston Globe. Amazon has has a patent on this device. That's kind of like a shark cage. But for humans in an automated facility. Now. Amazon says we're not putting this in place this is being used. But like a lot of companies we have an idea we patent it just so that we have if we ever want to use the technology. We don't want somebody to rip us off. Yeah. Now, but it's this cage. And this was granted by the US patent and trademarks trademark office in two thousand sixteen. It's this cage around a small workspace sitting atop the kind of robotic trolleys that now Dr racks of shells around Amazon warehouses. Now, the patent has been called by researchers quote, and extraordinary illustration of worker alienated stark moments in the relationship between humans and machines. But it's about safety. That's what they say. If they were ever to use this because they say they've never implemented this technology. They don't have plans to implement the technology, but the design appear to be an effort to allow humans to safely into robot only zones, which do actually exist right in Kent, for example, Amazon facility seven hundred and fifty pound robots topped with shelves. They scoot around on this area that surrounded by chain link fences, bring merchandise iphone cases, you know, coffee, mugs to employees who are waiting below to either place or retrieve items from windows built into the fence and if an unauthorized human, which that's just it. I don't know more dystopia and phrase than unauthorized human. Recognize them from facial recognition and if not pumped lasers into their chest at some point. If not authorized humid strays into the robot only zone. The company says an alarm is triggered and devices are designed to shut down to avoid hitting the person and killing them now Amazon and its patent suggested a way around this. Is what the cages for? Have to worry about shutting down production. If you have the humans in the human cages. From my. Okay. So every once in a while, I don't wanna say so much you're afraid of technology. Yeah. But it's all of the artificial intelligence concerned with everybody knows everything about you and your purchasing habits. Everything else. Does this add another layer to that? Or is this completely separate? It's to me. It's not so much the invention of this cage for humans. It's that this invention may be needed at some point that frightens me. Okay. I'm with you. Yeah. I get it.
