National Mole Day with Andrew Geary
"Hi Paul this is Andrew in today is National Day. Now my first thought this day is in honor of Pucks Itani Phil, but then are moles and ground hogs, the same underground inhabitant. Or could it be honoring one of the greatest land air battles of all time went to bias the mole attack tiny town in Rocketeer George Michael saved the day on arrested development. Now. I know Netflix puts it Tada on everything but did they also put their stamp on National Day? I look forward to you sending me straight Paul. I Fan true according to the Internet malls in groundhogs are often lumped together in discussions regarding wildlife problems that result in turn up damaged landscaping. This is because they both utilized tunnel systems and caused damage to plants, roots, and beautiful lawns but that is where the similarity ends, but I severely digress. Today. October twenty third is national. Mall Day which has nothing to do with furry creatures. Today's all about chemistry specifically avocados number, which is the number of particles in one mole of substance the numbers approximately six point zero, two times ten to the twenty third. Get it ten, twenty, three. If you WANNA learn how to celebrate this day. Look no further than the lab out loud podcast were in one episode they discuss mold day and how they have celebrated it. You could also research Amadeo Gaudreau and put out a social media post using the National Mall. Day, Hashtag. My guest today is Andrew. Geary. Andrew is the host of the seismic sound all podcast now prepare yourself for a second seismic sound off episodes our in depth conversations in applied geophysics intimidated yet. Luckily, for you, I asked Andrew. Where someone like me who try to cheat his way through high school science classes could start. He wrote back the following and I quote our episodes tend to range from various associations, specific highlighting our annual conference to broad scientific subjects, addressing racism and geosciences. But the best place generally to start is our episodes focused on humanitarian projects we manage here is one looking at building a canal Peru that's a good start. Unquote. For Third Recommendation Andrew Sticks with science and recommends an episode from the Your Day podcast called what whales on nine eleven. While many of us reeling from the terrorist attacks in the United States something very unique was happening underwater. For today's extra all's I'll let you decide if you would prefer watching Netflix's with Andrew or May. We, have had A. Exchange about the German show dark. I loved it but punted few episodes into season three because it was just too confusing. Andrew has tried to me to keep going but remember his brain works a lot better than mine. But one thing should be said, it seems we both are big fans of the blue family. Come back on October thirtieth for maybe one of the most divisive pieces of candy ever.

Trump tried to reassure America — and the stock markets had the biggest one-day drop in history
"Since returning from India yesterday president trump has been trying everything he can to try and show that he is on top of this corona virus outbreak. And yesterday. That's why we saw him in the briefing room. Trying to reassure the public but also trying to reassure the markets which is a key point here as he faces reelection this year. Now the question of course is. How does this go forward today? The president trying to reassure the markets but again another selloff tonight growing concern here in the US over the corona virus outbreak fuelled by rising fears of pandemic US markets suffering losses for the sixth day in a row while the risks to the American public remains low as the president said. Yesterday we're ready. We're ready for anything. Vice President Mike Pence on his first day in charge of the Federal Response Looking to reassure the public and calm the markets announcing several additions to the Corona Virus Taskforce Treasury Secretary. Steve MNUCHIN chief White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and ambassador. Deborah burks the US Global AIDS coordinator. An Obama appointee at the top. More confusion are you meeting the test? Scores leading the task force Will Continue to rely on the secretary's role as chairman of the Task Force and the leader of Health and Human Services he bought. We've known each other for many years worked very closely on the users and the president has every confidence in the secretary as I do that. Decision coming after trump returned from India on Wednesday and grew frustrated with health and Human Services Secretary Alex as our amid spiralling markets and lawmakers drilling his cabinet officials. Mike is going to be in George Michael Report back to me. But he's got a certain talent for their sow. Several people close to pence fear. It could spell disaster putting him in an impossible position as health. Experts warn the situation will inevitably get worse. Pence also has a controversial record combating an HIV outbreak as governor of Indiana in two thousand fourteen. This is truly a crisis that is centered on a crisis of drug abuse pence initially opposed a CDC recommended needle exchange program which could have helped prevent the spread of the virus house speaker. Nancy Pelosi says she told pens. She didn't think he should be in charge. Unfortunately up until now. The trump administration has mounted opaque and often chaotic response to this outbreak. This as a patient testing positive for corona virus in northern California is now the first use case believed to have been contracted from exposure within a US community. I don't think it's inevitable. President trump contradicted. The health officials tasked with fighting the illness at Wednesday's news conference. No I don't think it's I don't think it's inevitable. I think that is a chance that it could get worse as a chance. It could get fairly substantially worse but nothing's inevitable a stark contrast to officials who warned the situation will inevitably get worse. The degree of risk has the potential to change quickly and we can expect to see more cases in the United States. We do expect more cases and this is a good time to prepare and wolf. The vice president is now in charge of efforts to contain the spread of Corona virus. Sources are also now telling us that the vice president is in charge of all messaging efforts around this effort as well that means that any statements or any TV appearances from administration officials needs. I go through the vice president's office before they can go forward. Of course this comes after there's been a lot of mixed messaging from trump administration officials in recent days. But one thing that it's not going to solve is the president. Just as he did yesterday contradicting his own officials. Both all right Jeremy. Thank you Jeremy. Diamond over at the White

Amazon's patent for caging workers was "bad" idea, exec admits
"Robots are going to take over. That's big prediction automation going to be taking more jobs than anything else. Probably why. And then you see this story. Well, you see the picture Amazon. This was written up in the Boston Globe. Amazon has has a patent on this device. That's kind of like a shark cage. But for humans in an automated facility. Now. Amazon says we're not putting this in place this is being used. But like a lot of companies we have an idea we patent it just so that we have if we ever want to use the technology. We don't want somebody to rip us off. Yeah. Now, but it's this cage. And this was granted by the US patent and trademarks trademark office in two thousand sixteen. It's this cage around a small workspace sitting atop the kind of robotic trolleys that now Dr racks of shells around Amazon warehouses. Now, the patent has been called by researchers quote, and extraordinary illustration of worker alienated stark moments in the relationship between humans and machines. But it's about safety. That's what they say. If they were ever to use this because they say they've never implemented this technology. They don't have plans to implement the technology, but the design appear to be an effort to allow humans to safely into robot only zones, which do actually exist right in Kent, for example, Amazon facility seven hundred and fifty pound robots topped with shelves. They scoot around on this area that surrounded by chain link fences, bring merchandise iphone cases, you know, coffee, mugs to employees who are waiting below to either place or retrieve items from windows built into the fence and if an unauthorized human, which that's just it. I don't know more dystopia and phrase than unauthorized human. Recognize them from facial recognition and if not pumped lasers into their chest at some point. If not authorized humid strays into the robot only zone. The company says an alarm is triggered and devices are designed to shut down to avoid hitting the person and killing them now Amazon and its patent suggested a way around this. Is what the cages for? Have to worry about shutting down production. If you have the humans in the human cages. From my. Okay. So every once in a while, I don't wanna say so much you're afraid of technology. Yeah. But it's all of the artificial intelligence concerned with everybody knows everything about you and your purchasing habits. Everything else. Does this add another layer to that? Or is this completely separate? It's to me. It's not so much the invention of this cage for humans. It's that this invention may be needed at some point that frightens me. Okay. I'm with you. Yeah. I get it.

"Was in every gave our ever oh yeah so an often still is of the ladies as a lesbian i'm the most gay man you'll meet so like it was one of those things like so much glitter so much fun it was definitely fucking sex understated and beautiful i never wanted to grow like a chinstrap more shot about ability not greek nor man on these are the things that beautiful dark ones all can't gorgeous so that has all that memory to do well eight say turn a nine might have to think it might be voting time i won't you input older number four but i feel like that's as much leverage as i'm gonna get out of getting anything else terry yet no i would i would put older at four and then probably gets harder we'll look the older at four and so for those keeping track at home that has number seven fantastic that has never said you would put older at three right six make it big number five when the edge of haven't number four older which means which means i think carmen i r are outvoting you yeah and putting patients three and that's fun because when it comes down to the discussion of listen without prejudice versus motherfucking nineteen eighty cents faith it isn't discussion were having a little bit about listen without prejudice let's just describe what the fuck fate is for those who don't god damn no the fifth thing is i would say this is one of the things i would say faith is not a perfect no i would say there's a couple of weeks points but when it comes to i mean i feel like there was my biggest revelation the more and more sat with faith this week is the fact that like he did something the eighties actually completely transformational era because i feel like in the sixties in the seventies when it came to talking about sexuality in pop music it was subtlety he was all coy allegories it's doom to mil one more time you know that kind of thing is basking everything whatever and if you like this is the time when things go explicit visit before like two live crew was doing meeting me so horny and before the paradigm change in the nineteen eighties like prince was giving out there talking about like explicit things in anarchistic context and you're gonna exactly madonna and i feel like george michael was absolutely part of that conversation because the lead single from this album was not the song faith as big an amazing konica hit that was released from this was i want your sex all the time he will because i feel it was the thing after when it ended he personally was still struggling with his sexual identity but more importantly he wanted to firmly say this is.

"Consider me school but also that chorus of you know like like why we always fighting and said it spending time in bed light there's just there's something about this nice little hook it's a little bit understated really enough like that beats going in his vocals are little bit in the background it's like okay a lot which is a specially i feel like he doesn't get as much credit as vocalist as maybe he should because he sorta does the janet thing where there's a lot of like breathy vocals at slu sensual but then sometimes when he's like fully belting i'm like oh okay some pipes yeah but then the other thing here is i think is probably the biggest thing is number people talk about and it was a fucking single basically george michael solo single a different corner now at the end of the day i would say different corners not ever gonna enter like my top ten george michael song list originally because like i just don't love the melody not as big fan of it but what the song is is fascinating this is truly and i mean this the first point and it's worth getting into the rest of his discography of just the fact that he was essentially and especially at the end of way he kind of realized he was full on gay and especially during this time when they had all this teeny bopper fan worship like hit his andrew in the backup dancers are like or fishing they're like should probably not tell your parents you're probably stay in the closet you should that's what you should do and this affectively what he did also elton john in the mid seventies cautionary tale because when he came out as definitely not straight his literally his album sales his radio hits pretty much old right up at that when there is an outrage walter cronkite covered fucking elton john the news because of that recent sexual revolution very recent guys it's a thing that happened and is very important i want to bring this up too because so much of what george does for end like not necessarily the first two women which are just kind of like effervescent nido infre this here in a different corner especially it's like he is he getting out hints communications and when we wanted to be h one by the music special georgia's looking back in the wake me up before you go go video in the pink shirt in the everything is like god it couldn't have been more obvious but a lot of people he was just flamboyant and fe and you like whatever and a different corner is the first switch for the next three albums when he's like trying to tell us something there is torture behind these things and there's a pop critic alfred soto undisguised up during the slate hip hooray podcast about george michael hell light when it comes to being a gay fan of pop music when it comes to especially in this era prior to essentially gays becoming accepted in mainstream degree i feel like a lot of things that you had to look for hints you had to look for messages and things like that locked in the lyrics 'cause jim league when you fall in love in restraint person you're like being in love is awesome all why won't you go out with me i mean this very general pop songs but like everytime george michael talks about it is pain it is torture it is like you know like just regret tap salute you know anything is and so this thing like free personally i don't love the melody of different corner but like when you listen to that solving look at the lyrics is like whoa this is he saying something he's wrenching out yet i as an i i respect the artistry of that it doesn't necessarily elevate the album for cyber back the fuck out of that so that's kind of like because it's a mix of really good songs and lesser songs like that's kinda wanna put the engine music the hedge of heaven or do you will okay let's let's just discuss this out before there do you have anything to share i will say that last christmas may beings still my agent even going back less christmas is played in my house all the.

"A way of restablish himself as being like i believe rega or whatever feeling was kinda way to ingratiate himself to the general potty also part of it was he just put out his greatest hits album the year before right outside like like which was a huge statement about that incident joe maze i mean that video is incredible probably one of my favorite songs from him even though is not on one of the album's raking and so this the song from the last century was sort of a didn't sing of the pal exactly cleansing of the palate like he had this gross thing that happened now he just wants to move forward do something classic where he can just sing but also i'm guessing that he was not in place especially thinking about just how fun most of his songs are it's at the balance obviously but like all of his albums have really bright happy moments and i don't know that he was necessarily in the mood to do that as much so instead he had this sort of down is a lot of orchestral moments the song yet harp is really annoying which is literally just three minutes of it's not even like intricate heart playing it's just trills over and over again in a hate it all right well i think that is that is good enough for me so in that case we now have seven of a ranking fantastic make big news from the heaven faith with one older patients that we're going to rank them we're gonna vote each other we're going to have good debate we all have open minds i'm definitely open on a lot of this i actually have no idea how any this is gonna go so i'm really excited about it it's going to be well guess what guess what it's starting right now you're the guest so we don't have you don't have to decide anything but i just want to your nomination what would you say out of seven slots what is the worst on your case the least best george michael album would you nominate fate all right cool least okay i could not stop laughing at fantastic i joined some of it but the wales rap was so brutal just repeating women bam together first of all is not a rep was thing eighty three i think it was i had barely become a thing which is like sounds like right okay everybody take a look at me street credibility no you don't condone just strictly based off of that once the trauma of all the ways about him for me are tearing them has a lot to say about them so so fair wimmer is rough shoot the believing this album is not fairy high for me but i like disco a lot there's a whole lot of disc while i was blown it when i first because i had almost jiro familiar with this kind of new bad boys and like bed boys just not as bad as as you think it is but those since dated whole raid asli fucking import heads exactly but let me took it because i heard on a fucking avalanches mix for they didn't even know the original artists the fact that george michael wrote a song called ray of sunshine and it's this at twenty years old this complex late deep exciting little light disco pop number is mine blow yeah genuinely like that's a great song i was kind of blown away by the it's definitely one of my favorites out of like all seven albums that we have here oh ray of sunshine yeah civically that's on i am so into and you know i think that there's a couple of other things on here that i mean okay i will say the love machine cover is voted it's just first of all the first minute before it really like hits sounds ho dated especially because i know the original so well and it's it has real horns and real instrumentation it's motown classic and it just they don't change it anof to justify it being here if they had transformed it i could maybe give it a little more credit but it's just it's just love machine son by george michael instead of the jackson five and so yeah absolutely i would say just 'cause it.

"Think it was crutch for him in like helped him get out of that shyness and the biggest thing is that when it comes to the two of the because he was such the driving force of lamb because his solo discography is so short we felt it was appropriate xy rank all of them together because i think there's gotta be some surprises in it for you so when it comes to making their albums we talk about wins and nineteen eightythree debut fantastic released when they were goddamn twenty years old which is insanity to me on nineteen eightyfour recordbreaking gogo album make it big there was the final whim of music from the edge of heaven from nineteen eightysix there was george michael solo stratosphere breaking debut faith in nineteen eighty seven there was his much more acoustic follow up which was listen without prejudice volume one in nineteen ninety of there was many many years later nineteen ninetysix as much more mature take on everything with older in nineteen ninetysix there was his covers album that he did in songs in the last century in nineteen ninety nine and there was the final album that was released studio recordings patients in two thousand four now this seems pretty straightforward but there's a couple of qualifiers throw in the biggest one first off is when their final album we are doing music on the edge of heaven because that was an album of new material that was released primarily or america however in the uk it was release as the final which is kind of a greatest hits slash new album combination very michael jackson e that stupid we're not gonna do that we want the music by itself so we're not gonna bring the same twice a thing that we're doing so we're going to do that but carbon and put this to you and i really this is like i'm such a strong advocate for this i really don't wanna brank slung to the last from the last century in this ranking because it is i mean it's one of the things like it's just him doing a bunch of old songs and fundamentally traditionally we don't do covers albums for the most part like we add it did bring david bowie's pinups because it was like the last statement of spiders from mars we did bring cheat cheat by lady gaga because it was such a stylistic diversion from what she did like it was worth noting from an artistic standpoint this is what i can't i don't really have a lot of justification for this personally go i can i can understand why would rank it from like his artistic journey but as far as showing george michael is they don't know that it does a great job of that but what do you think should be included in the ranking i think it's an incredible album in general just because you get to see a different side he had a large like well he was a fan himself harry connick junior and i think it like pulls into that having the big fan with him makes you a good portion of its incredible listen but again it is that he is covering so i understand that you not doing it necessarily this way i it's something that i still enjoy by it's okay i respect that you're not yet live in the end we did listen to it i'm really okay with not listening just because it is i feel like of all the doors michael albums while it does show is site of him as a performer i feel like is also just the least george michael out of everything because so much else he wrote everything and he had everything and like that's a more important thing highlight so go and get that time he was just big enough to be able to do these let's cover it differently so i think that's probably what it was like can release it also the first release since i feel like with really since his big famous infamous outta in ninety six if the do the police sting so as such if you like from that end it was like.

"Funny you will seek to the charge givers it is a music loving podcast for music loving people read every single by particular artists and we rank it from worst to first and guys till let me tell you something the thing when we started this podcast to the first season ranking the discography of artists that we like it was that artists that'd be like you can speak from a place of authority from now third season we're basically doing cold dive sometimes into artists that were kind of with our kind of whatever and sometimes these dives have revelations we did our whitney houston episode i think we kind of went in with a preconceived notion of just like you know she's famous pop singer there's bobby brown thing and drugs she's a really well known singer and then we dive into the story and it's like oh my god she's one of the greatest vocalist of all time or story is tragic beyond all compare like there's just so much into it it was just a great reveal and i feel like that's kind of a solar thing that happened with this week we talked about artists who you might think of as like a gay icon and really super fluffy pop hits and things like that but then when you dive into it you're like oh my god he was a legitimately talented musician beyond all compare and also he had a surprising indeed secret that he held inside of him that informed so much music identity guys we're getting into it that's why this week we were talking about the one the only the most famous slide man to ever worked with andrew ridgely that's right we're talking about joe might go the bed was nasty so listen young one of the guys listen michael's did you forget what joe i literally aber rehearsed it and i forgot you know it's it's like guys were recording it live you're getting unfiltered stuff it's great symphonic so guys listen we don't i wouldn't be doing that so george michael born london and he was actually son of two parents father was very greek ran restaurant on him to work in there and do nothing but work in there but he had musical bachchan's very supportive mother and he's shy shy kid so when he finally went to high school and then basically met up with andrew rich very fashionable guy that was kind of like only god fashion school we should form a band together and they did and the thing that's not known a lot about jerk michael he was talented it was like a little white prince because he recorded everything drums keyboards baits he was the he basically almost all the instruments on all the outcomes and was the producer on top of and the songwriter like as fluffy and sometimes it's supposedly hits worth their all come from george george michael was the guy and so while the initial lamb kind of had like this team opera audience especially with their big al making big it was when george michael went solo that he lost into crazy superstar status like mike michael jackson levels of fame like it was crazy he is a fascinating discography that we're going to go into this week because that's what we do we're going to rake it who's the wait let me tell you first off there's me i'm evan sought you might know me as interviews editor pop matter i'm a pop music critic you probably see my works and other plates not that's okay not wanting to know i wanted to know that i'm the host of this podcast i love this pockets and if you love this podcast and you know the person sitting next to me the andrew originally to my george michael that's right he's way more talented the let me.
