"Hey paul how are you. Well thank you appreciate it good. That's how i got a couple of questions for the first one is Has to go with the basketball in college basketball. Rankings you know in football you looking at the big powerhouses like state alabama. Clemson ali big schools but in college basketball. You're looking at kind of the david's not the goliaths gonzaga Even my even my alma mater in chicago loyal. Chicago's top twenty five. How how how did you quit that. Well let's start with in college football. You're talking about one. Hundred and twenty-five thirty teams that play at the highest level. And i don't mean power five. I'm talking about power five group of five in college basketball that number expands to in the mid three hundred so the pool is a lot bigger. It's also significantly easier to be good in basketball than it is in football. You can do it at a smaller place in today's world especially if you have players stay for a couple of years and you mentioned loyola. Was it george. Who was it they want. A couple years ago was at george mason didn't go to the final four boiler went to the final loyal. Is the most famous in the last couple of years. George mason went. Davidson was steph curry. made it to the elite eight. I mean we're talking about Some some some rather bizarre things. I mean schools couldn't compete in. Who and who don't compete. You know lie but loyola from chicago though. If my memory it goes pretty far. Back i mean they had basketball moments. Hey you know what. I hate to admit it. But they won the national championship. The year after i graduated in nineteen sixty three was that Was that george. Mike and did he go there. No no no no mike and then go. There actually like choice. Mike and went to a preparatory seminary that i was in for four years. Okay i want to loyal okay. I knew you were connected to george. George mike and somehow thank you for the call. Larry but but that's why And you know it because you went to one of those goals. Quick break back with much more including a very special guests at the bottom of the hour. Stick around to and listening to paul finebaum show. Podcast year on a late monday afternoon. John is up next. Hey john all get afternoon paul. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the ripple effect that the ncw decision to grant an additional year. Availability has had on the availability of Scholarships in the recruiting portal and on high school recruits at the high school level. It's a great question. john. I asked a coach the other day and he didn't answer that question and i don't think he answered because i don't really know yet i'm not claiming i could be one reason why. The portal is so crowded and just think about You know everything is planned out and suddenly there's a lot of excess around. I'm not sure how it's going to go. I'm really interested. And i mean there's only so many people you.

"This is. Marie Apple Lewis Lakers. Come the LA LAKERS. Yes it did and that's the. They started here. So in Detroit Labor out of the city. Dearborn Michigan Yeah? But here's the question. Is that the the season that the that the gems had was so bad that it qualified the Minneapolis Lakers for the first overall draft pick. The guy that they got was Tom do you know Michael Jordan Mike in? Number one overall who at the time was like. So greatest basketball player that ever lived we're getting a little bit off the. So That's how George Mike La Choice turn the ball over to Minneapolis so that's The the Lakers just winning division. Jedi stop they've tied the Celtics. Won Seventeen world chips in the Lakers and the seventeenth. So it's yeah but. Gain, but because of the thousand dollars because of the. season. that. got. George George Mike and the original superstar right I superstar the NBA is so George Mike and when he played for the Minneapolis Lakers, then he went to the Los Angeles Lakers and it became like the I like La Lakers superstar. So that's how the Lakers are like you literally came from Detroit He's got to binders full of stuff and he just keeps pulling them out. Oh Okay on who in Wayne? That's Wayne Gretzky. Yeah. That's the only sports picture in history where the little kid beat the champion and goals. Only picture ever taken all remain the kid coming back. He was he was twelve years old there was the. "Eighteenth t Pebble Beach Pro-Am all weekend on CBS. That's right. Move into the Players Championship. That's been bumped up to March roll right into the masters, obviously down at Augusta in April. You've got the PGA championship which has been moved to may. You've got the US open, which is June. You've got the open championship overseas, which is July. And basically, it's golf season's potus. Brother looking forward to it is and Dustin Johnson playing well so far the Jays modest five minus five through fourteen these two shots off the lead, obviously very early. But Tony fee now, I see him prominently on the leaderboard and Jason days. Well, so some good named Brendan graces that I believe he's where's he from the South African Brandon grace? I believe he is. But worry Sabatini's plot worry seventeen. Jeez. Where's he been Lucas Glover's up there as well? Modest four sell Gulf is underway. Let's get back to the Durant stuff. More on the bronze. Well, one eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven listen if Kevin Durant wants to live in this fantasy tale and this fairy tale world of not being asked about anything other than basketball. Here's what Kevin Durant can do you can willingly voluntarily give back. Like he deal Gatorade. Whatever else endorsement you have which probably is about thirty or forty million in totality excluding is actual player contract, which is earned every penny of his great. And you know what? Go to the cage on west fourth street gulp to Roker Park. Go out to Philly. I'm sure there's some good run in Chicago when the weather's warm same out was same out west LA in certain spots. And you don't want go to a sneaker store and buy a pair of sneakers like the rest of us. Go play pickup, and nobody will bother you. But don't you feel his angst? No from all of the speculation. Not real it. He doesn't know where he's got. Maybe he does though where he wants to play next year. But isn't know where he's going to play next year? But it seems like I think he knows we're all we're all creating this narrative before even you know happen in. So I can understand why gets frustrating. And I think and I honestly believe this. This is coming from his teammates like his teammates because they're real out there in Golden State. You know, that they hold you accountable like talking behind your back or around your shoulder. I can you know, you should be like tell you to your. Yeah. Which is why they're so good. A lot of accountability. And so I think he's starting to hear that from his teammates. And that's why he's getting frustrated at the media because he's he's sitting there saying, what do you want me to do? They're asking me these questions, we all know that it's a possibility kids sit here and say I'm gonna sign what the Golden State Warriors for the next decade. Just say, you don't know. But that's not good enough. I think that's what that's the point. It's spoken to nine days. He hasn't said, I don't know if that's because if he would have said because guys are writing these articles as if they do know, and that's hard, right? You've put words into his mouth. Someone's putting words in his mouth that aren't true and they are trained, and I believe that's why he's react. I'm gonna give you the different parts of psychology here. I believe that there's a part of Kevin Durant right now that is bothered by the fact that we know where he's going and he's going to play for the Knicks his agents in New York there is you the Knicks don't trade porzingas without some serious Intel that Kevin Durant is coming to the garden. Yeah. And I believe that. Kevin Durant is bothered by the fact that he obviously can't speak to that. Now. Clearly. Yeah. If he denies or or rejected vehemently, he's gonna look like a liar true who've come July. I if you come to the next it again, I believe he will I believe it bothers. But I think it also gets in the way of what he wants to accomplish. So just because he might be playing for the Knicks next year doesn't mean that he doesn't want to win a championship right now. With the Golden State Warriors. And he's the best player on the ten win. Another MVP in the finals. But it's so do it do both. It's just hard. It's a long way off doesn't look hard. The dominating course, they're dominating people. But it's a long way off that to happen. So to be asked the same thing over and over and over to give the same answers over and it gets frustrating. Coming back to the same point. I understand that. I guess that maybe Kevin Durant needs. This is actually a compliment here. Although some advice as well. Because I've gotten on Durant pretty hard to meet everything I said, maybe I didn't mean to calm a dope. Maybe I take that back. If I could have one word back. I will take that. When I was little bit worked up everything else will stand by better than I don't need to call somebody though. But I think that Kevin Durant needs to step back and understand how great he is. And it's his greatness that wants this this. We are trying to quench our thirst as it pertains to Kevin Durant. He is so good. He is so physically and rare and unstoppable that has created this sue Nabi of a pursuit of information. And I know that it's frustrating. Yeah. But he's got to understand that. But it's speculation that gets frustrating. I think like if we want to question him. What's question about his game is the question. I player right now. He's the best player in the world right now. He's the best right because LeBron's on a little step down plateau right now. We'll vacation he make a backup vacation right now. You're right. Katie's the busboy early on the plant is run right now, by the way, I think when the Braun even if LeBron plays the next ten and plays like LeBron. You still have the conversation. Maybe. Kevin durant? The best player now. Now, you're healthy. Right. Lebron? You're right. His his his shot is indefensible play he rebounds. He does. He does everything all defensively much the last four or five, you're right. You're right in the warriors. Lebron is now taking time off because he knows he's got to do it. All yeah. You could make that argument. Did you see the one highlight? I know we came out he banged in his first I think it was the first six shots in the first quarter last night. Did you see the one when he when he was street the Dow down. Yes, he came straight down the lane. He looked like he was twenty five or twenty four years old. I mean, he had some lift and so down some flexible that look. But you forget it because he plays so much on the perimeter. How long he? Yeah. I I it was like he's type it looked like he left a foot inside the free throw line. And his back foot was still at the free throw line when he threw the ball. And basket, you know, what I mean seriously looked like his body took up the entire lane. That's because that's how that's how long he is. Obviously, you don't want to do that all the time because all it takes is one little undercut or step in wrong on somebody's foot in your you destroy yourself or destroy your season. But his athleticism is off the chain. It really is just we're going to get these calls. I promise that we're going to go with this a little bit more. I was just jotting down some names. And these are this has nothing to do with the order of best players. Although all these guys most of these guys have not all of them would be my top ten but many of them would as a look down. Probably missing somebody's that do this in real time. But as I look back at over the the evolution of the sport of basketball, right? And it's easier to identify this hoop. Senate is baseball much easier. Maybe even easier than football. I look at you have to put George Mike, and I was going to put George George Mike and the first big man, you'll see where I'm going Mike in wilt Oscar who was really Jordan before Jordan Magic six nine point guard. Yeah. Dirk seven foot range up big time radio shack, just a flat and actually shack before Dirk beast. Yeah. Just ridiculously physical. Lebron combining force and velocity. And Steph in terms of the three point shot, and obviously Durant is on this list in terms of players that I may have missed one or two. That's a pretty good list players who have changed the physics, by the way, the game is played Durant is on that list. Yeah. Of course, you don't get the Durant is on that list. Because the only thing that you can do to defend him when he's out around the perimeter is bring your big man your center, and he just dribbles around the block. He's he he. Stuck in the mud and because of that he's really made the NBA a center lists league. Guess because if you don't have a five move his feet and rolled or rotate whether it's off the screener role, or whatever it is. You can't play. It destroys right? So, you know, he's I mean, he's he's great. But he's got relax, Dan's it, in my opinion in Wisconsin. Dan is on Tiki and Tierney. What's up, Dan? How you doing? I have no qualms whatsoever with Kevin Durant intact. I respect respect him a whole lot more interesting. Why give it give him? The demise of Mr. Robinson today. I gotta these professional sports players could learn from him and his quiet dignity. You know, and after two weeks of listening to LeBron cry about who he wants to play with who you wants to coach and everything else. I really don't want to hear from another professional basketball player until yada is holding up the world championship trophy as interesting. He has a good chance. Get the buffs fans from Wisconsin, dad. You're right, Dan. They got the best record in basketball. And they I mean, he was amazing last night. Forty three forty three. But there was just like some of the things he was doing like the dish. She hit the Malcolm Brogdon over over on the left wing sit for a three pointer wide open. I mean, he was dead straight looking back at the point guard. I forget who it was. And just flipped it through two defenders brogden caught it up. You know, catch it on the hip catch catch and shoot drilled it. I mean, this he's turned. I mean, he might be the MVP right now is the NBA. He's my MBA, I'm overly focused, obviously. Because I want to see James harden do what he's doing. And it's just amazing but Yoenis guy. Yeah. And their team is ridiculous. Good when they got something they needed with miratec. They needed him the raptors, you know, listen, I love the raptors going and bringing them Marcus, Saul Tobias Harris we touch on that yesterday. Mike. What it can you read the the poll question? I haven't really given this out we've been so wrapped up in Durant. Lebron I think it's a great question you, and I can answer it now. And obviously give people the chance to chime in on Twitter it pertains to the Eastern Conference, Mike. What is it buddy?.

"Is very familiar tried to go to this. What is this? Hi, that's right. That's right. That's exactly right. Clint eastwood. Lee van Cleef all those guys. Wallich? Right. Hi, fist full of dollars for a few dollars more. Yeah. Right. Christoph this book T donors. All right. Bingo in the mid day ever. Of course, little laryngitis today from doing all that screaming in Brooklyn last night at the net game eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six is the phone number. Let's let's talk to Alan parameters. He's on the fan. I al. Yeah. You know, feeling good a kill. You know, there's going to be my last call 'til Monday. I don't know. You know? I can't listen to Eddie, even though the patriots are in it. I can't watch TV. I just can't. That's too. I mean, what are they the analyst? You're gonna take who's gonna win. You think anyone could tell me more about my team? That's like trying to kill you. To tell you about the jets. Yeah. But it doesn't matter even if your teams aren't any. I mean, there's only so much you can take after what's left to say. Let's play the game already. You know? Sure. I on a girly don't you think he's hurt? I mean, you know, when you watched him against the saints and that was a game that they had to win. He wasn't in their time. So I I really think he's hope. It's a couple of passes in a game to maybe I don't know. Maybe now as far as Bella checks strategy. I think he's going to stop the run and make off beat them. Okay. I think that's a direction he's going to go. And you have to believe that they're gonna say, well, they're going to double team Eshelman and see what what else but the patriots are different offense. Even I see things that I've never seen before the release of Brady getting rid of the ball. And we will hear it. You have to get him up. The mill you have to get. And there were a lot of teams that do that. But they still lose, you know, he's going to be thrown to screen. You know, when you talk about when you talk about white, and now they have door said, you know, gronkowski seems to be playing better in what about the patriots defense? You know, the the rain selling a great defense. You know, we talk about their their pass rush Britain gets of the ball too fast. I, you know, I really think at all Super Bowl both that I've ever watched. I really think the patriots are going to end up winning by two touchdown. I I said L, I look I I don't disagree with you. I don't I think they're gonna win this game easily. I really do. I think they're playing with a major chip on his shoulder. They have invented this idea that the world is all against them, which it is. I mean, he's not wrong. The world is against them. The country does not want to see them win anymore. You know, and Brady's guy. You know, what he said again, you know, we're still here and all of that. I think they're going to win the game. And easily. I don't think this is going to be a close game this time. I think they're playing with a chip on his shoulder. I think they want this game badly. You mentioned gronkowski very well might be the last game of his career. So, you know, he's talked about retiring I could see him avenue a monster game here, and you don't check will come up with something defensively. Whether it's taken girly added a game. Like, you said, forcing Goth beat them, whatever it may be, you know, something whatever it may be and it could double team Edmond all they want. They'll they'll they'll be somebody else that we throw Chris HOGAN for big big plays in a game. You know, like you said those set, I just don't see it. I think this is going to be the one that they finally run away with. I'm with you. Game by at least double digits. I think they're going to win this football game. Eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six Sam in brick. I sam. Hey, Joe, the spokesman for and. I am. I don't know about that. But by doing okay Sam. Okay. Lean quick one about the jets and Anthony Davis thing. About Adam gates, hoping I didn't have a chance to speak out about it. You know? Give him the benefit of the doubt. But you know, the more and more you hear about interviews. That is been doing. Office staff he's been hiring. I'm just nervous that he has not learned one thing about what happened in Miami. And just and that is the big thing that I'm really nervous about coming up with the phone coaching staff. Well, let me say this about it. I did not like the gays higher. You know that I wasn't crazy about it. At all. I am feeling a lot better about it. I the fact that they hired Greg Williams to be defensive coordinator. I thought was a tremendous move through. No doubt about it. He does have a young quarterback. Now that he really did not have in Miami. You know, tannahill cat Kotler guys. He had their Osweiler. He's got a young. Potentially terrific quarterback now to work with. And here's the other thing too. After watching Todd Bowles and staff for the last four years. I mean, anything is going to be an upgrade over the coaching staff. We just had anything because they were as bad as it gets. I really want. So I feel I feel a lot better. We obviously you've got all that money under the one hundred million to spend in free agency. They got the third pick in the draft. Now mccaddon has got to get some players here. I feel better about it than I did when they initially hired days. I will say that. You got it and regarding ethnic young. You know, the one thing that just drives me crazy about the NBA. I mean, these guys are entitled to go to the super teams take less money. But the problem is when you have the drama off the court being more. I guess I would say, you know, interesting then the drama on the court, then you know, that the NBA whole has a problem. And I mean, I would I would always want us. I would wanna see which will never happen because there's too much TV money is that they should just have you wanna blow up his whole super team thing is to just do a tournament, which you're never going to happen because of the TV. That's never happened. Because right. Everybody in the entire league. We get to play in. Everybody. But let's say I would say maybe. Who knows? I mean, it's never going to happen anyways. It's a new point Sam. Here's the thing. First of all, thanks for the call as far as Anthony Davis concerned that they find them fifty thousand dollars to me is ridiculous. I mean, it seems like all these guys are always asking for a trade. Okay. And I think the NBA actually likes the idea because it keeps them in the forefront. Like you said the eighty two game regular season in the NBA. I mean, it's very it's tedious at some point. You know, I mean. We all know, we all pretty much noted. You all know the warriors gonna probably win win the championship again. Now, I don't see how they're not. There's a big difference between the haves and have nots right now in the NBA is no doubt about it. But I think it's ridiculous. They find Anthony Davis. I mean, we're hearing about guys all the time that one that are asking for trades. They want to go somewhere else we hear it all the time during the season. So now, you're gonna find this guy fifty thousand dollars the thing about the NBA, and I'm gonna this is outside of the seventies. The seventies. You really didn't. I know you had the great Nick teams in the early seventies. They won two championships. In a four year period from seventy two seventy three I understand that. Okay. Were tremendous team. The Celtics won a couple titles in the seventies. But you did not outside of that decade. The NBA has been dominated by dynasty teams. I mean, you saw the Celtics win in his sixties. You saw them win eleven late. Fifties fifty sixty saw them win eleven to thirteen years in the eighties. It was either. It basically was either the Lakers or the Celtics in the eighties. The Lakers won five championships in the eighties. The Celtics won three championships in the eighties. So that's pretty much that was it. That's pretty much what you had in a decade of the eighties. The Lakers and Celtics dominating you go to the nineties, the balls the balls in the nineties they won six championships in eight years. They would have one more. If Jordan didn't go into that bogus retirement for a couple years. And even when he was gone you saw back to back championships from the from the rockets. Allies you want? So tonight, these yeah, the bowl dynasty, then you get into you know, you get into the new millennium. And you've got the Lakers went in three three in a row again. And then you had the Spurs win all those championships that they won they wound up winning five championships. It wasn't. Well, it was between one thousand nine hundred nine two thousand fourteen that they won five but still they won five. And now you got the warriors that a dominating the winning three the last four years. You don't even the Miami run that they had when they went to four in a row and one too. So there's always been you know, you look at the history of the NBA outside of the seventies. Even going back to the fifties. When the George George Mike in Minneapolis, Lakers won all those championships. The NBA has always been a a league that was dominated by one great team for the most part. So this is not this is what the league has always been. So yeah, we pretty much ready know who to champion is going to be in a worry is gonna win it third and roll four and five years. It looks like it's almost inevitable that that's going to happen. But this is what the NBA has always been about. And I think they actually like the idea that you know, they're in the tunnel regular season. That's never ends eighty two games that seems to never end that they are still the whole Anthony Davis thing can keep them in the forefront and keep people talking about. Eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six how about Sean on Long Island? He's on a fan. I, sean. Hey, Joe good to talk to you. Again. How are you doing? Well, sean. I heard you talking about the war is I think it's a foregone conclusion that they're gonna take it again here. But I. I would have to say, maybe you agree with me the best chance, and I'll be the small one bounce them would be in their own conference Putin being the being the Houston Rockets. That's that's where I would go otherwise, otherwise they make it to the finals. There's nobody in east you rattled off. All those teams before none of them. None of them really compared to the rockets in my eyes. Anyway. Yeah. You don't want..
