"You play in a league in the NBA. That pretty much. I mean a lot has happened in the last two months. But you know I. It's not hard to forget that the NBA essentially really became the leader. When it came to said you know action should stop I. It started that way. How do you think the NBA has handled the situation throughout on? Are you optimistic on our return to action are an NBA has been tremendous online handling this on my thinking in keeping on players in team? Personnel Coaches Front Office. Everybody involved with an organization keeping US informed on a twenty four seven basis. I mean we'll get emails at wee hours tonight because you league in our our union is trying hard to keep us and obviously to get believe back. We want to get back to play basketball but I think everybody safety and health. This is the most important thing for Adam. Silver and lead to know be on the front line and everybody started. Follow suit that I was brave of the lead but a even prior before that we had been gearing up for this. I don't think to this extent but no we had been ready to play with no fans on for a while that was chattering on around league. All it could have been a break. I remember people talking about. It could be two week break so we can get a grasp of what's going on obviously has been bouncing now but no we we we. We've had an information for awhile while on and time you know there's a new update with the virus with the world we know. Mba is right on it so they've done a tremendous job just keeping US informed in Noble. Get back so but I think everybody's safety and health is the most important thing for sure. Quinn I mean. Obviously everything stood still because of the pandemic but how. How are you feeling whether your team with the Lakers? Looking on this season where you guys confident enough to go the way how we feeling optimistic. Howie feeling well. I think we have good shots You know I think we were hidden. You know our Australia at the right time. We have some key key wins on that we needed Before the everything came to a halt. But no all in all you WANNA west second best record in the NBA and getting better know finally got our roster fully healthy on. We added some guys once. Everything is back man we we. We'll be right back where we left off and the good teams. They're staying in contact. Everybody using their resources in improvised Danish. Shaping guys say man is going to be a Asterik on so whoever wins this year Obviously I think whoever wins this year? No what the closest team had the most. You Know Great. Obviously no happens. You know you have to stay healthy. Not The ball bounces some ways about your way or the other way gotta stay together to others. And whoever wins this year? Noah deserves it. We all thirty teams have meant a lot this season. Have you been keeping in close touch with your teammates on a daily basis? Do you have your own routine. Are there any guidelines that you guys are following as a team in this moment really just staying away from each other just to stand with our family standards? A group chat is still very active even more active now because right now there's nothing else to do. So is on their phone. Make Jokes on day. One still have to prepare as if no we have to go back to playing. You know when you know hopefully happen sooner. Hopefully it happens whenever but opened happening and we have to prepare as if we still want on a championship. So our leaders are coaches. Are Our friends keeping everybody no intact? It was going on keeping that family Atmosphere that family feel even though we can't physically be around each other so it's been fun man his job and with the guys and I miss them in the Samsung. So quaint. And I don't know if you know this. But in the Latino community we'll have big what's up groups and there's always one and knowing person in that group that you got to commute every now and again the is there one in your in your teammates. What's Agra that's just bugging you? That's probably messaging little too late a little too early. Don't WanNA get your home. And everybody has their family. Everybody has no on what they got going on. So it's not really nobody's annoying is literally just joke. Saints was funny on the Internet. It's fine is is. I think the biggest jokes there who doesn't probably stop your adult. He's he's going on a he's he's he's as Aga- resposible being diplomatic. I like that I guess at the. You know you're talking about keeping yourself busy indoors and talking a lot. I'm sure that Sunday nights are big with you. When you guys are watching the last dance. Have you been watching that? I mean we we wait for that. The Super Bowl. No every week is something to look forward to. I'm a me prepare Sunday like the game. They mass on thinking about the night before Atlanta's tomorrow on no wake up with it. We got five hours or at everything has to get done before. Six o'clock as a basketball fan. This is what we need. You feel like you've seen every Michael Jordan. Highlight you every possible footage out there that have just come back with more footage Never BEEN SAYING. Y'All take pride in being Michael Jordan connoisseur in. I've seen stuff that I can fathom. You know. Be ON CAMERA. So it's been great and everybody's enjoying it aside from being an MJ Kanazawa. I know that you also obviously see and saw Kobe. Bryant is such a mentor to you. A hero to you tweeted about it. How did you react to an episode five began with a tribute to Kobe? While saw a preview on Nassau that he wanted to be a episode five so nonoo is going to be on no tougher. Everybody it's really fathom that you know he's not here with us Is Still. It's still hard like even you know pitch at him and G are here anymore. No Kobe had to be in there on December How impactful he was on. Mj On his basketball. Because you know from our generation you know he was on my Jordan no he. He's the Guy Henry Lebron on the guys that the older generation will compared to Jordan and I was a conversation so no he had to be in there but the way they put it in there like the words how Mike who spoke of Kobe. Either back then in in ninety eight and all star game just before he did anything really know just being named all-star starter he captured everybody's attention to little Laker boy. Little boy I mean the spray in the world you know just talking about the in just the respect. Their Kobe half Mike. I might have Kobe. Just no talk to him. Give Him Advice. Tell him he. He's always there. If you need on me I know that means a lot to anybody so it was something to off. Affeldt good like I felt good watching. It was joining this to see Kobe. Out Jordan interactions and see him on camera on years later. In in in in in giving in-depth asser. It was a great piece in this time as you. It's a good timing because it makes you feel connected as a basketball community for sure Quinn. Finally you also published a children's book called a cookbook. Tell us a little bit about it because it seems super interesting and an inspirational. I guess somehow is wanted to do on. My mom gave me a book growing up. Michael Jordan's book saw in his shoes on. It was about Michael. He was always. I guess the smallest short he always said he wanted to grow and his mom. You know I guess. It was a a tradition or ritual that that was believed if you put saw every night he'll grow. It might never believe he never believed in it and then one day you like five nine like six four in the book the Children's book and I'll probably read that book till I was about. Fourteen fifteen when I go back to my mom's house like I'll go through it a little bit and just reminisce but a always wanted to do a book here. It was perfect. Time for me and a cookbook is just give kids Montana recipes. It's success ten words. Ten things about us to get to where I am. Today in tempting is still used to this day. Keep praying in life. "Joining us now. Is Quinn Cook Lakers Point Guard? He was also playing college. At Duke was one of the top rated basketball recruits in the class of two thousand Eleven Cook One and NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors. In two thousand eighteen. He also played for the Mavericks the Pelicans and he's also part of this amazing story of Basketball County. The new documentary we showtime and Kevin Durant about this incredible area and Maryland producing unbelievable. Mba Quinn thanks. So much for joining us all. Thanks for having me my pleasure Quinn. Let's start with the upcoming documentary on Showtime that. I just talked about Basketball County in the water. About Prince George's County Maryland. And how this section alongside the DC border produces an overwhelming of MBA talent including yourself. Talk to me about the project. And how much were you involved in it very much involved? you know it was a dream. Come true for me I majored in theater. So I've always been known to documentaries and you know editing and I'm like biasing of theater and You know there's something I've always wanted to do. Just shed light on where I'm from because I is such a unique place in the no close together a place and anybody from there tell you the same thing we all support each other especially guys who play basketball and who've made it you know to college in any type of pro so no for Kevin in enrich climbing to bring me on. It means a lot man and I know we've created something that you know. Everybody will love. I mean I can't wait to watch it as you mentioned you're part of this story in a crucial way you've said in the past even though you're physically and La your heart is always with pg county how was it. They're growing for you to talk to me a little bit about your childhood growing up on it was fine. We could do a lot. You know we had you know. Football Baseball knows basketball. Any anything sports related and just being a kid is something that you know any. Kate wants Opportunity to be great and For me growing up there I had so many resources so many people that look to so many people idolize and You know I just think that you know. I'm lucky to be from where I'm from specifically with basketball fans and is documentary. What do you think people are going to get out of it as they put your community you know on the big screen? What what do you think? We're going to get out of it when we watch it on. Just how together? We are close. We are on Japanese to each other is no hate is no jealousy is nothing is really all loving and and it's really a brotherhood. I think you know we started looking at different cities. What players from each city we compare to? La's in New York's Chicago's are we talking about one county. You're talking about one small Canada. Where all five ten minutes away from each other like we all grew up together. Go to school together. Go to church. Same Church Saint barbershops everything. So I think that's the the unique part about it and I think a lot of people don't really realize mystique until you start naming names and It's just an amazing pool of talent and not just basketball this thousands. Are you ella more about you? Know Our county absolutely. I mean you talk about yourself. Obviously Kevin Durant bitter depot as well. We just go on and on with the names. Do you think you talk. You're talking a lot about unity. Community love friendship. Do you think that's a major reason? Why the ratio of the growth of NBA on and has come obviously talented as as a major part of it. But this support around each one each individual's party a big key. Would you say you agree with that now for sure they everybody plays a big part on for me? It's like the guys who made the NBA are the only guys really get. You know that publicity opposite or resources is different than fans in basketball coach watches on a nightly basis. But for me it's like the people didn't make it. We all have a lot of guys who knows chose wrong on paths and you know. Sometimes the political side worked in their favor and basketball so they didn't get to go as far as we did so for us is like we want to share like everybody to the people who didn't make the people who helped us gave coaches the. Is Everything Pioneers in? Dc in a pressure county is something that means a lot to Louis so you talk a lot about that amplifying everybody and you know you actually show that a lot with your own foundation alongside your family. You know just continuing to help the area especially during this time earlier this month for example handing out meals to local police and firefighters. How important is it to you that you stay close to this community? Even when you're you know across the country as the world it means the world you. I don't know how much it means for for myself for my peers. Continue to give back and help on is is is just a blessing. Because that's what the guys before us and we wanted to keep you know of moving at four because we WANNA help everybody and no for my family just to be on. Frontline baroness this and helping out and You know it also basketball player. Not Like my family would does the same thing I grew up. We always know Thanksgiving Christmas we will go feed the homeless and stuff like that trying to help out on. My parents has always tried to instil. Like you know you guys are looking. You have a roof over your over here. You have two parents you you you. You're not missing meal. You have closing back on. Never not deaf granted so now that started early so I think I can speak for myself personally about it made the NBA or not. My family and myself were still be on the front line. No helping others. Because that's how we raise. Yeah and even more so now during this pandemic you see that. Know that unity even more. So let's talk about you Quinn for for you've previously talked quite honestly about your experiences at the damn especially when it broke out and when you took the test early on how how was it for you. What were those feelings? And how are you feeling? Now as the country deals with this year the tests on my experience I mean I think a lot of people will tell you uncomfortable nor is is a rough but Knows where it just to have a peace of mind. You'll get the right information and how to go about things in the you never would have thought the world could come to this saying. It's the worst thing that can happen ever but is a unique talk for all of us and we don't really have a grasp what was going on like. There's like no right answer like no just a lot no vaccines or anything. So listened to the experts. Listen to our government and just take a precaution up staying Away people staying away from large crowds cracking social dissing washing hands for twenty seconds. All that stuff counts all that Madison matters a lot of stuff that we grew up. No being taught really so no I just go about it. How everybody else is trying to stay positive. It could be a lot worse while pray for the families in people who are affected by this who can go to work. Wet Live on a check-check basis in their checks on coming in because there's no work With people whose family situations and household situation are comfortable or you know just very lucky. I'm very lucky and blessed. The seed is not going on and can't go outside as much but Noah it could be worse on for myself so always keep that in mind and I'll just trying to out. Everything is back to normal soon. We'll return after these messages. This is Jon. Wertheim if you like this show and our sports illustrated podcast. There's another show.
