"george breakneck" Discussed on The MMQB NFL Podcast

"Podcast that Wednesday in one of my favorite kinds of special episodes. We've been lucky enough to have some of these. Before. Where my co host, the Wonderful Jenny Rentis has a big story on sl dot, com something that's super impactful in the NFL world and something that I think entered our collective conscious, and then sorta left when know covid came, and all these other things that we've been have been rightfully grabbing our attention, but. I would direct you guys. It's our daily cover story recording this on Wednesday. Around two o'clock in the afternoon. It's called Church and saints. How much did the saints helped the Church on its sex abuse scandal? I? Don't know if. This is one of those things that you know. The AP story comes out. We hear some of the allegations that the saints are providing public assistance or whatever it is for the Catholic Church. And, then it just goes away, but Jenny spent all this time digging into. It produced a fantastic piece. That's well worth your time. And Really Kinda digs into a little bit of New Orleans as a whole, the Catholic city, their relationship to the football team, so it's wonderfully done. Definitely read it and Jenny I. Guess my first question to you is I. Don't know what was the reporting process like for this and for people who are kind of still getting caught up here. Set the stage for us a little bit. Yeah, thanks, conor will thanks for the Nice opening I appreciate it I think it was right around the Super Bowl I remember being in Miami, seeing some of these headlines coming out, obviously the Associated Press and the New Orleans. Advocate done a great job reporting on clergy sex-abuse in general in the New Orleans area, but in. Our then how the saints got involved and it's it's a sort of a strange story meaning I look at it and you think why would the saints want any role as one of the lawyers in the case said, why would they want any wrong? What's otherwise a toxic issue and it is kind of hard to wrap your head around it. Things are a little different in New Orleans. Cities more than forty percent Catholic the church, the biggest institution in the city, The saints are probably the second biggest, so there are these two major power players, and there was a civil suit filed by a former altar, boy, alleging abuse, and in that's in the document production in that suit. There were emails between Church officials and the saints. Saints official and the lawyers who are representing the plaintiff stopped in their tracks like what is this? Why are the saints involved? And so they ended up issuing a subpoena to the saints in two thousand, nineteen, asking for all their communications with the archdiocese, pertaining to the clergy, sex, abuse crisis, and the stains produce those documents in December, twenty nineteen and the story that broke in January was. The saints were going to court to keep these emails confidential and under seal, and that is where most of them remain today. There's a couple that had been made public. They were previously marked non-confidential, so they have stayed non-confidential, but the majority of the three hundred some emails between the saints and the archdiocese, which in itself is a significant volume of communication, remain under seal, but looking at the court records there are definitely some clues, and some indications that the saints involvement with the Catholic Church went. With the publicly acknowledged, the team has said that it provided minimal. Pr Help specific to the release of a credibly accused clergy list in November, twenty eighteen, and they said that they were contacted that their head of Pr Greg Pencil was pulled in by another community leader, and they identified him as federal judge. J Zany. Who invited him to help with the PR surrounding the release of the list? But if you look at the timeframe of the communications, IT started months earlier. It started in July of two thousand eighteen, which is before the archdiocese have even decided that it would be releasing. A list continued for months after. And there was one in one of the document exchanges. The saints replied to the Subpoena and one of the items asks for any. Emails in which Greg Benson was given the authority to help the archdiocese, and they produced an email exchange from July thousand eighteen. Between Excuse Me July twenty eighteen between Gale Benson and Greg Pencil and so that kind of was. That, that was a red flag. I guess of sorts because it was so far outside of the time line that they publicly admitted and if you look at how those documents are characterized in court filings by the plaintiffs attorneys. There's an indication that they were emailing about story. That was pretty damning for the church. It was this alleged abuser. George Breakneck, who was? Removed from the ministry in the eighties had been continuing to serve as a lay minister and a church in Metairie Louisiana, which is where the saints headquarters are, and not only that, but it would come out later that he'd been at school fairs and he'd been participating in Knights of Columbus functions, so he was still very much around children and in settings where he should not be at somebody that had multiple times been accused of inappropriately touching children now. He's denied allegations that he's currently facing charges for. For first degree rape of yet another altar boy so that was the first communication the saints produced, and as the emails were catalogued in court filings it that article was the one that was being sent. So that is something that didn't have any relationship to this. Just simply PR surrounding the release of this list was well outside the time line, and after a back, and forth with the saints. They did acknowledge that Benzel was in communication with the Archbishop of new. Orleans during that time, but Long, explication, Connor, but basically at the crux of it is, that's one example of how their involvement has gone beyond what they've publicly acknowledged, and so there are a lot of survivors in New Orleans, are also fans and advocates in the city who are pushing for full transparency in full release of emails. Because, they want to know what's in them. In a plaintiffs, attorneys have also alleged in court filings that the saints it cannot be denied. They said one court filing that the saints had actual involvement of the creation of the pedophile list I'll. That's something that the saints have denied, but that is a pretty strong allegation, and so I think there is so much interest in what's in those emails. Emails and I think especially for survivors who have felt betrayed by the church. And now they feel betrayed by the sports team that they love, and that's why it's so important. I think for them to be pushing for a full public accounting..
