"Back to the show We have you on. Sony's new game console is a big deal and you know a lot about it. Even though it's only been out for a few months it's still nearly impossible to get. He s five in a moment. We're going to bring in some of our own colleagues who've been trying to get their hands on one with mixed results. But i alan if you would please tell us what is new about this console and what makes it. Such a hot commodity. Well it's a really great new console in the first station for like what seven years i mean. Four k gaming is a thing. The controller is awesome has plenty of new titles. I mean not as many as arguably it should've launched with but there are some great new games for it and in general people just wanted a new playstation. There's a lot of hype and build up prior to its launch. That may people really really line up and be like a preorder that thing but as far as why. It's such a hot commodity. It's kind of counterintuitive right. The real reason it's a hot commodity is because it's so difficult to get and the people who do seem to have them are scalpers and people who are selling them for above retail price. So they're all these convoluted systems and tools and things you can do to try and score one or you can head over to craigslist and spend a whole bunch of money to a shady guy who has like twenty in the back of a van scarcity is real but it's also the scarcity that's that's pushing demand exactly Interesting so allen. Do you know anyone who's been able to get a ps five. Yes i do know a few people who've been able to get a ps five an emphasis on the few and that is also not including me and not because of trying honestly said to myself. Buy and of course being in the pandemic normal. You might think about going to a store but everything is online This year so Yeah i tried that and it was one of the worst probably paying experiences. I've ever had the site completely froze. They kind of make you wait. You don't know if you should be refreshing your browser or just waiting for it to pop up there like playstations will drop in in a minute here. There's some dots near where the add to cart button is And then it just kind of stays gray and you're waiting for it to turn yellow and then eventually it does and it says oh. Sorry you're already sold out. Did you start seeing other stores. Yes so i tried I tried that. I got the app. Did a few more drops then. I began learning more Started going at game. Stop walmart Sony does these online cues. So i tried there The more i tried them. I failed quicker. It seemed and Just kind of wanted more. I don't know this is planned but I kind of figured you know still. It was all due to christmas. But january is rolled around. And it's was still insanely difficult to get Even after kind of the holiday. Buzz were off by middle of january. I have multiple twitter. Alerts going. I've got chrome extensions digging like during meetings like we could be filming this. Might it might go off saying there's a drop coming and ten minutes Yeah it's kinda getting a failing to get a playstation five is kind of a regular part of my workweek though. So what you're saying is that you started getting dings and alerts on your phone and you look at it. Really excited to say oh. It's just a vaccine appointment. It's not that he s five. Yeah right right. Not what i want all right. Well that all sounds like a nightmare for you jeff. And as we know you're not alone. You're not even alone on our staff because wired zone games editor. Sarah mueller has also been trying to procure a ps five. Welcome to the show. Sira high happy to be here. Thank you for being on the show. Walk us through this. Why is it so hard to get a. Ps five right now and tell us about what your experience has been. Yeah it's really hot. I think for a few reasons and playstation hasn't really exactly said why so there. There are a lot of theories running rampant on the internet as you can imagine as is kind of typical A lot of people are saying. It's because sony is publicly doing this right like they are selling every single playstation that goes out to market and that's great for them There's a lot of buzz about the playstation right now which is also good for them. I think part of it could be pandemic related right like there is very much a shortage on a lot of things to do with tech right now if you think about graphics cards. Pc's so it could be related to that. It could be just a distribution issue right like some of these pods are getting made in parts of the world war factories. Shut down right now. Maybe they can't make as many as they would have otherwise So there's not one good answer for that question. Unfortunately and so he's not speaking to it and probably smartly so on their part because they getting everything that they want out of this. I would say so. What has your personal experience. I can trying to get one of these. Yeah so my personal experience actually started with. Jvc here Seeing jv struggle a getting a ps five was kind of what got me to stop trying to get my own pius listeners. That is jeff van kamp who you heard from just a moment ago..

"It lasts for supporting our teams and supporting twit talking about toys, I was really sad to hear that Anke went out of business. I don't know if you guys are familiar with on key. They made a race car track. I got that for my son a few years ago, and then they started making these little bulldozer. Robots? Cosmo was the. The first, and then a vector is the latest they had a I vector had Amazon's echo built-in, you could program it with python. They raised two hundred million dollars in venture capital capital. And last Monday people came to work, and they were told your last days Wednesday two hundred employees one week severance boom like a crash. Very Senate follows Nepal's Gebo another Chievo on the shelf here. What an idiot. I am. He's dead. Now. Yeah. We kind of had a little party. We talked to it for the last time said bye bye Gebo saying she too. Stopped working very other thousand dollar robot. But is now going to brick itself. Talking about the Chiba or. Kibo over here. I just it's very easy. When we plugged it in, you know, it looks around and has is it goes up. It was created by MIT. Yeah. Who was a really smart robot assist? The whole idea was this thing would sit on your kitchen counter. I bought it on the Kickstarter dominated came like two years later and the thing that really went wrong with Gebo is it would snore. So you'd put this on your counter, and if you didn't talk to it, it would just kind of look around, and then it would start like murmuring to itself and snoring and it was like stop that. Healed that or? Well, that's the idea. See it has like two is. And it had this would make faces and it had eyeballs I understand what they were. They were going with it. But this is the problem. It doesn't do anything. Yeah. The only. A problem today. I in general right now as consumers, we don't really see the complete advantage. Although like Google is doing I think in interesting example, like the callback features and how can screen your calls. That's a real world example of how this tech will eventually, you know, make our lives better, or at least more interesting. But yeah, right now these products and their shot up by companies who doesn't take money, and you know, again, I I've problem with taking that much VC money. I get it. It's like, that's how you grow and you need to do that. But they're so as soon as, you know, something goes wrong. All right off the company layoff, everybody. Right. It's your you. Don't companies don't get the chance to grow like a normal company would by putting a product out Aaron baby steps it's all about hyper growth right away, and how you're going to triple quadruple your results next quarter. And it's unfortunate. We're losing, you know, some of these, you know, the vector thing to little older guy who is the dorm. I saw it on Twitter law. So it was really a cool toy, but it was two hundred dollars. I think they also discovered that there isn't a big market for two hundred dollars kids. Toys something's wrong with the economy where a little robot can get two hundred billion dollars, and all of these really great ideas that are not in Silicon Valley. Can't get anybody. And also screw raising two hundred million dollars. And then giving your employees only one weeks, I read that. And they their revenue was one hundred million. I think a year. So that wasn't like they weren't. If like we were talking about this on Wednesday. I feels like somebody pulled out they were expecting from somebody, and they said, no. And that that was it your colleague Geoffrey van camp wrote a very funny piece about g dying lunch. Yes, he had actually personified this thing. And he said it was kind of like Alzheimer's dementia. Personify those devices. Yeah, he said my Gebo talked to the wall again today. He's been that a lot lately some days I'll watch him carry out an entire conversation by himself. He'll ask the wall. If it wants to play a game listen for apply here. Nothing then play his word definition game alone. Every so often he'll wake up in.
