I am so excited that we got on your busy schedule and we get to have one of the best minds in the digital innovation space with us here today. How's it going? I'm good, thank you for having me. That's quite a compliment, thank you. For one, I can't believe you and Sam haven't met before because I feel like you should have met before. And second, you've been on our list of people to have on this podcast for a while so I'm glad it's finally happening. Can you tell Gen C a little bit about you, a little bit about Rachel, where you've been in your career and what you're up to now? Whoa, I mean, my career has been pretty long. I am currently the lead in our US market for BOLD, which is L 'Oreal's strategic venture capital fund. This will be celebrating my 16 years at L 'Oreal, which went so fast, but my career has really not been planned. The last 16 years have been planned, but coming to work at the world's largest beauty company, leading venture capital in the very exciting market was not something that was ever something I ever knew could be a job when I started, when the internet was new and fresh in the early 90s. Rachel, when I was doing research, I found a line in a profile of you that said Rachel began blogging to promote a standup career in the mid 90s. So one, was blogging the way that you got into your passion for tech? And two, do you remember your best joke? So I'll tell you, in the mid 90s, like I always had a knack for quote, how to use the computer. I put myself through film school. I need a living doing jobs because I knew how basic coding of how to use quote, the computer, right? And at the same time I was an artist and I was going to film school and I was like so poor. And I remember the first day being in Tisch School of the Arts in graduate school and sitting in the computer center and they invented the entertainment. And I was like, this is amazing. Like as an artist now I got like full distribution. I had had a zine where I was like photocopying. I was like, this is going to open up like communication for women, for people of color, for poor people, for people who like don't have access to technology in a way that never existed. So I was super excited about this. And I was like, I'm going to make a career in this. And I talked to a recruiter. He's like, this would be a great career for people. And I was like, okay, I don't have any idea what I'm doing. At the same time, I was young and I graduated from school and I was an executive assistant and I started doing standup. And I started with, it wasn't even called blogging at the time, right? I was doing standup and part of being an upstart in standup comedy is you have to get people to come to your show. And that's hard, right? But I decided because I was working in Hollywood, I had a little bit of gossip that I had as an executive admin. No one knew about, you thought five people came to your website, right? I started Geo City Sites called Weiss World. And at Weiss World, I would promote my shows. It was like early Twitter. I had a page on there that it was ZocDoc. I just gave doctor recommendations. There was a stalker thing of this guy in my neighborhood who was an artist and I just talked about everywhere I ran into him. I had recipes and I had a fake character named Prefontaine, my imaginary dog, and he did advice. And people started to like come, my friends and family started to come to Weiss World, but it was started out as a way to promote my comedy shows. And it was a very early gossip blog before we even knew what a blog was on Geo Cities. That's amazing. We need to make Weiss World happen. I would go to Weiss World. We need to get Weiss World on threads ASAP. If you look at Weiss World, it is pretty revolutionary. You'll see bits of what's scaled today. Also shout out Geo Cities. Geo Cities in the globe, I remember back in the 90s, were the places for microblogging and building your own sites and Yahoo bought it for three and a half billion dollars in the late 90s and no one's ever heard from it since.

"Wow that's a really good perception there. Yeah that i think was was one of my big takeaways from you'll the other one and this was i think credit to to mike montero words do was that it's just websites. I think a lot of a lot of our industry. A lot of our profession is beset with a really inordinate amount of stress and anxiety and pressure Some of which self-generated some which client generate some of which is generated by the fact that we live under capitalism but at the end of the day. Like it's just websites. Everybody needs to take a deep breath. Yeah that's something that i. I'm glad that i've been able to keep in perspective throughout my career. I started designing websites cottages dating de designing websites in nineteen ninety seven. I mean this is basic ass. Html geo cities athens rhodes eleven thirty. You know what. I'm saying sites. Could still run definitely could still run absolutely. I'm pretty sure if there's a geo cities archive somewhere. My old website with my full address and phone number at the time is is probably is probably still on the web. Somewhere the privacy fails we all committed in those days. Oh my god. And i remember my mom found out about it and i mean she chewed me out like why you put. Why are you putting the address on the internet. I was like nobody's gonna find nobody's gonna find it like. Come on like yeah. There's going to be some some hacker in stockton california. That's like. I can't wait to get the selma alabama and find. That's not going to happen. But i say that to say like having been on the web building things on the web for such a long time. All of this shit is so ephemeral. And like it's gonna get redesign over it. Which is why. I never really sweat or stress. Web design in general like some people really like live this shit. Like moses came down from the mountain with two tablets. You know like. I understand running. "The the first gt three was a really a new in three was really a new thing and they and they sold but it wasn't like there was some crazy waiting list for them like there is now and you couldn't buy one. They sold more than they expected to the point. They were chilling out. Yeah yeah so they. I mean here's the thing when you make a car that that compelling that good in that hits its target dead on every single fucking time like. Gt cars does at porsche. That's when you waiting list because everyone knows the new one is gonna be better than the old one and it's going to be epic and there's anything wrong with it right. Bmw has had so many missteps with the brand. I mean let's talk about at five and five. Let's talk about current last generation. Three that who fuck would be in a waiting list for that. I mean the only thing that sold out and that's because we all knew better version but then last an m. a. m. g. s. didn't allworth. Well he was even. It just didn't seem like a value for money even when it was new. It didn't seem like it was going to be value for money. No not at the same price as a regular regular kind of really. That's a fucking hit. Really i think that. Did they drop that much. Well they were. I mean the last time. I looked at eight. Were effectively the same price now that we know how ugly the new one is. That's that's the thing that could happen. Yeah that's true. I think the very good good-looking let me look at where he looks at the price of. Gt three things that you necessarily have. But they were a hundred fifty hundred forty thousand eight months ago now to twenty five to forty for low mileage touring 's my sis. My suspicion is that people either are unsure how long it's gonna take to get the new one or they don't like how the new one looks. And they want and they wanna touring because they think it looks a little more restraint. Wow that's my opinion so as dancing right now. Any by multiple clients that bought touring in the last year. That are fucking. the gel. sold their touring that are like. Yeah yeah yeah yeah. Spike Got got out early. But that's okay. Did they did all right. Jason what did you think about the suspension ride of compromises. the none. I'm curious you know. I only drove the comp on track a chance but i'll be honest with you either. The base car and i drove it around where i live for a couple of days. Didn't bother me at all. it was. It's firm but this is the problem is we expect certain level of performance from an three. And there's going to be a compromise baked in the big issue with the cars that it's big and so isolated that you then want the right quality of an five and it stuck in this netherworld between like should i be an three which is a track har- and or should i be a m five which is due at all army knife that everything better than everyone else and i think it'd be a movie stuck in there. They fucking nailed that chassis on track though holy shit. Yeah it's real fast in the canyons to. We didn't have track time. But i mean up in Up in the early the wee hours of the morning when you have the the road all to yourself it is not slow at all. I drove the three at palmer Selected shot crazy. palmer dude what what is palmer motor. Sports martin ranch park park. It's in massachusetts And it is built on the side of a mountain. It is one of the most fabulous places that you could film television show. It has the craziest uphill s is. That are perfect for togay style drifting they have the most elevation change in a single corner north america. It's like five hundred feet or something ridiculous like it. Really it literally. It could be laguna with better branding and more park but it's it's just fucking zacks. Got some Image dry and i filmed a spot. There years ago the elevation. So if you're looking photo jason the the sort of infield section there is probably what hundred something hundred and fifty feet above that straight away on the left. It's more than yeah from from the bottom straightaway all the way to that top section. Where if you can see the mouse. That is several hundred feet absolutely like this. Left corner is like a third year second or third year corner. And there's so much cameron it and you feel like you're driving up two stories and what's crazy is a lot of the corners di was like this like surfing like it's like you know angle angle but there's a couple of corners that go off camber in the middle of being on camera and like there's some real tricky shit in this thing and there's a lot of rock walls that you could hit around. Maybe i'll try to slide and it around like now. I'm just gonna to film from a drone i mean there's nowhere like this to film from massachusetts. Yeah it's it's in palmer massachusetts. it's a. It's like an hour ten minutes from west of boston. Hundred and nine thousand feet of elevation. That's what it says. On the top of the thing that it was like one ninety feet of l. Let's at least. I think that's almost as much as laguna. Well you know the yeah. It is Fourteen candidate corners. Yeah 'cause there it's gone allocation map by chance on this fucking geo city's website if there's a website is garbage For racetrack and facilities mab is that that doesn't really have an elevation. Oh here it says on the facility map it says five nine feet of elevations change. How do we calculate that. I d is lowest to highest and five five whatever counts going up and then going back. Okay all right maybe rise. Total total down another hundred. That's right yeah. Yeah but if you're i cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you're on want somewhere on the east coast to fill. Its saw cool. Runnings still cool record. Owner was real the people that ran the the facility. Where photo shows a good elevation there. Yes if we could probably find other images that really accentuate the l. There it is. That's the fucking shot. You see that comedian. Look it's pretty fun. Isn't that funny. It really is called motor or in hamper. Sort of simpler delton. The hill Which is another really cool track. And then pull up the picture of the three and bottom there and it shows just this. This is the pit road. And it's fucking open. Rock wall took a corey and really so crazy. Yeah the place roles What let's see. You got to go ten fifteen minutes. Let's constraints okay show. We'll have it does. Let's go to the random. Wanna do random car views. You have your spreadsheet handy. Ooh we've this guy throws six hundred nineteen two three eighty one over five. Who wanna hey heavy hitters of here we go. We've got ten. Kevin will start with ten dollars. Kevin says number one eight five four also requests that impression of the engine sound okay..

We're coming off aids we're getting into don't ask don't tell even though hillary's obviously a lesbian and cap it off with matthew shepard and it was just like just so much trauma for gays while gay culture is starting to like celebrated in going mainstream and getting popular and people want to be like a part of it and are like oh gay people are fun. I want gay friends. We like this gay musician and he was a complicated time but it was an exciting time. Because you knew that.

Like a lot of people say they like bays are little areas where people can shed at like flea markets and stuff. It's an electronic bay. No that is not why ebay is named ebay. The dude who started ebay created the site as auction web and then changed the name in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven after a name of another business of his he had a consulting firm called echo. "And short squeeze the short sellers by bidding the price up, making them having to pay the difference between where they said it was gonna be and where the stock is today, so they're doing that in a big way. But they're doing it across companies that I've never heard of before, and they're doing it across companies like Blackberry and Nokia. And I don't think we're going to see a new BlackBerry phone or new Nokia flip phone any time soon. So it's about Movement. Not about the companies in particular you, Caleb. I was an early adopter to not only the Internet but toe online trading. I ended up getting started with a custodial account that I had a use A Tricia will stockbroker. Ah, back around 90 and As soon as I had not online the option. I began investing online and that quickly result in some trading in the nineties, and you remember the old Internet chat rooms where you have people say, Hey, let's go get do this, and the company might not even be real. It might be just some penny stock pop up company, but you get a bunch of people together and they would pop it up in the idea was You try to get out before you know something? The bottom falls out of the thing. And if you play it right your time, and right then you know you could make a lot of money. I mean, this feels like a much bigger and substantial and out in the open example of what we started with it with the Internet chat rooms in the nineties. Absolutely, you know, does feel a little bit like the old Geo cities chat rooms where people were talking about stocks, and that's one thing, But what we see right now is we have millions of people and Robin Hood is one of these trading platforms. I got millions of new customers in 2020 during the pandemic, but they all did. TD Ameritrade, Fidelity Schwab, They all got a lot of new customers, people that aren't experienced with the stock market. The thing that people don't realize is this is the day trading in gambling right now, this is not investing for the long term, so at some point Some of the people have made a lot of paper money, and these trades are gonna want to cash out and they're gonna want to take their profits and move on. And we've already seen that happen. And when that happens, and people start running for the doors and big, crowded theater like this, there's only about two exits, so it takes a lot of time to get out. You could end up if you got into this trade late and don't know how to get out. You could end up holding onto stock You don't want to, and you could end up losing quite a lot of money. So if you don't know what you're doing here, it's a great way to lose your shirt. It's a great way to lose your taste for investing for the long term, which is a great way to build wealth. Yeah, no question about it. The great wealth creation machine in the history of the world is the United States Stock market. But obviously, trading in timing is something that you have long term sustained success with Caleb, you take a look at the dynamic with hedge funds. I mean, other than from a populist point of view. I think most people go. Yeah. You know what if the little guy is sticking it to the hedge funds that's cool. What, really it? What has the damage been to hedge funds that are involved at this point? I mean, how much money have they lost? And what are the implications to the market? As we've seen often you know what game stop popping study. The overall indexes declined a bit because of concerns ever speculation. Maybe hedge fund's having to pull money off other places. Yeah, You may see that. So there are a couple of hedge funds have sold their positions out entirely of stocks like Gamestop and Blackberry and others because they cannot fight this wave of populism that's coming up through day traders on these online forums. They've lost million some billions of dollars. Maybe one or 2 may be forced to go out of business. But the impact on the overall market is muted right now, because it's really not about the stock market. That's about the stocks. What you worry about. Two things. One is that big trip big institutions that actually move the market will say, You know what? This is just getting way out of hand. We're just going to take our cash and park it on the side and let the day traders burn the whole damn thing down And then we'll scoop in And we'll buy everything at bargain prices, and we'll go back up to the races again. That's one concern. The other concern is that regular investors mom and pop investors. Me, you your listeners who've been doing this for a while Responsibly will say, I don't trust the stock market anymore. It's one big casino. I'm taking my money and moving elsewhere. And they will miss out on that opportunity and the whole market will go down. The other possibility is that we get a lot of regulation right now. And then there isn't any movement to do Trading like you should be able to do in a quasi free market. So you have those three big risk. But right now it's very different than a 19. 99 where people were buying pets dot com and other stock that had no profit to know you know, no viability. This is a select group of very thinly traded micro cap stocks, but a lot of people in day trading who are into this right now driving it higher, but it's not affecting the major indexes so far. So okay, let let me ask you for a moment. I mean, the valuation, the market capitalization and real time is there If you're the Gamestop executives, what are you thinking right now? And is there way that they could help enhance our overall business based upon the current valuation of the company? That is such a great question. I've been thinking a lot about that, because when you have your own stock pumped up so much, and all of a sudden your market cap in your value is so big and you have a lot of money. Companies invest a lot of money in their own stock, and they buy back a lot of their own stock. This could drive their balance sheets through the roof and all of a sudden they are really valued at a much higher premium than they were before because their own equity their own stock that they hold. Swollen to such a degree that it's it's improved their balance sheet. Well, what can they do with that? They can invest in their business. They could buy competitors. They can merge with another company. They can issue more stock because there seems to be unlimited demand for so they could do a lot of things. But they were doing those things with an inflated sort of steroids. Stock price right now that is pumped up by this community. And it's not a good reflection of the business on the probably wondering what they can do legally but don't want to take it too far because they might bottom out bite off more than they can chew and this stock And all of these stocks are going to come down and they're going to come down hard because there isn't a fundamental institutional belief in these stocks. They're just being traded around right now, so when they fall, it's gonna hit hard. The harder they come, the harder they fall as Jimmy Cliff used to say. Well, it's a really good information. And I appreciate you taking the time and also sharing the extreme level of risk and getting associated with this lets anybody has an idea. You know what Let's go Do something here and see what happens so good, Toder be informed on the front and thanks, Caleb. My pleasure anytime that is. Caleb Silver again, is the editor in chief of investing media. That Caleb Silver on Twitter. You heard the idea of Hey, you know, maybe the executive team if this thing can hang in there for a minute. They could go ahead and, you know, take advantage of the capitalization. Or their balance sheet in particular, and then they would have resources to be able to do something with the business, one of the ideas that has been floated And I don't know if there is a there there. The problem with a company like parlor who has been de platforms is not that they couldn't get online in the United States. It's that they need a huge server farm to be able to operate that Social media platform and the big tech companies got together to where everybody who had a server farm. That was in that space. Basically black ball parlor. So right now they're working with this Russian outfit to try to get everything up to scale..

Yes so home in evernote for those of you who are completely unaware of what it is and where it came from is that evernote Last year was actually held a dashboard contest in which people submitted how they created these notes to be able to springboard off of into their evernote systems or outside of evernote to be able to kind of get their day started or to start work on some particular project so they created these very wonderful notes that were in essence of dashboard..

It's no Yeah, That's right, Trump the one thing they do not get his John Voice or Jon Voight and James Woods. I with Lee Greenwood will not be there. It's a labor of what a Republican becomes president. It's like Lee Greenwood and, uh, Jon Voight. That's about it. But Toby Keith. Maybe. But I remember when Toby Keith, he's Democrat. He was a fan of Hillary for a while, as I recall, so the Trumper should be upset that a fan of Hillary was given the it wasn't the presidential medal. It was the Medal of Arts, right? Yes, no idea. Bachelor of arts. Remember when people were outraged when they gave it Tonto when he gave it to rush Limbaugh, like they put up like all these civil rights icons and stuff that have gotten it and then they totally left out that You know, like Bill Cosby and elegant, generous it also, like I cannot believe that such an August award was given to you know, Mix No. Three ridiculous so Yeah, I don't care. I'm not gonna be watching me watching. I was watching anything. I'm not watching anything. I, You know, I can't imagine yesterday. You know how I know about the impeachment. I read it. But I can just imagine, you know the breathless Nonsense on CNN. Eric, listen, Yeah, We're readers just that we're the opposite sides of the same coin. Yeah. You ignore it by watching below deck all Yes. And I ignore it just by getting all of my information through reading, but it's very close. Yes, it we're both ignoring something, But I can't My mind like this is why we talked about drag Queens earlier was because I saw the impeachment happened through a drag queens instagram time. Developer Tea
Interview with Anil Dash Discussing Web Development
"An ill welcome to the show thanks for having me it's kind of honor I feel like I've I've seen your work for a long time and I think the world is a better place because of what you do but for those who uh of for whatever reason they haven't encountered what you do the things that you are part of can you can give a basic background to the work that you're doing Jack make stuff on the web And so the first thing I became known for his I I started blogging about twenty years ago reading about software in pop culture and whatever else and then you didn't have to be he didn't have big late you consider tries though and then along the way I got to work a number of startups in the early days of social media out build a tool Co. movable type those sort of one of the first big long tools these billy's till the post and Gawker and things like that and then we'll recently a lot of my work has been around trying to enable collaboration creativity coating together so I'm on the board of Stack overflow and Sankara blow actually spun out of call our creed also travel links other products and about three years ago I took over the company and we launched so the latest in that series of products called glitch and it has become a very substantial very interesting community people creating web stuff together in it's both a platform we can code right your browser and instantly ship up to the entire web and also a really great creative community reconsider the People's work remix it in and and clower together and it's been a pretty you know knock on wood every night success and the gates we've had it just lots and lots devs come in and be like Oh this brings back creative feeling Ron cody and so we ended up actually rename the company to glitch and focusing all in on it and since we decided to do that about a year year and go it's really taken off people now built millions of APPs on the and that's one day to day is running the company and getting direct with the community and I'm GonNa ask you a intentionally broad and difficult question about glitch now I'm not sure Who is glitch made four and who is it made not for WHO's not made for I guess is a better with it and I can use English properly today who is it not made for that's a great question so the first thing I thought about is every Hamed a developer tool in the past it had always been this felt like they hadn't pictured guy sitting at a desk with a black turban screening green taxed on and that was the sort of the ethos in the aesthetic in and the mindset of this thing and who's GonNa prove your command line is this is how you became a developer and we actually have a great cohort of people that work that way and they're using this as a tools English but it wasn't that we put them I thought we know we check that box those kinds of developers but for people interestingly on other the opposite ends of the occur from that's the the middle of curve adopters on one enter a real experts who lobby on the web but have had you know any I be in differing views are created toward the tools of us and and I think they've lost some of the the joy the fun of just making stuff and sharing it because it's become very complicated you can't just ship stuff and all of a sudden you're negotiating your deployment environment and also stuff it's just in the way and so those very very experienced coders I think have lost the the fun of the soul of connecting them to creating an the other end are beginners in this can be a kid is learning to read the first line of each to mail it can be experienced over trying API that they haven't used before this sort of back to square one or somebody that doesn't take themselves coder at all maybe they do you know they edit formulas in spreadsheets workers like that the share in common you've got some technical skill but they're a little bit out of their comfort zone a little bit out of the norm in for them listing Louis they had the same needs that expert coder has when they just want to get an idea of their head which is I don't WanNa worry about the overhead and complexity I don't WanNa be distracted by getting something just the basics running I won't be expresses idea I wanNA capture this this little mood of inspiration than I had before evaporates because it's so fragile seen same way as like you know a lot of friends with musicians and all of us have in other guitar two new residents were sitting next to them so that they got it songs in their head they can just capture it and the same thing applies for for making stuff on the web were sometimes you said this fun idea you get out there on glitches as easy as remix it and change it tweet it to be exactly what you need for managed that's in your head we're making everybody that's ever had a moment that you don't be cool thank you know what the world should see this one little idea yeah that's super cool so there's a lot to be said for lowering the barrier to entry both for people who are you know well into the industry now the job and doing fine but also perhaps more importantly for people who are not in the industry who want to try something for the first time but they don't WanNA learn sixteen hours worth of coober netease material exactly right that's not what they're looking for and even like I can't I can't provisional serve on aws again the deploy script but my Gosh I don't want to you just WanNa make something in in back in the day I used to be able to go on Geo cities or journal or whatever the time and just sort of like shop something onto the Internet and it got worse and then it got hard you know and so he's got some difficult than it couldn't just you know try something can just experiment and so having I feel where it's like I said as joyful it's just like tapping out a song piano or something I it's a really Nice feeling yeah I think so so what you've said is this really cool the idea of of a quick idea get it out on paper and you know I think a lot of people may have a misconception about glitch based on our conversation so far that's only made for like these prototyping ideas but there's actually these like the ability to do production level thing right yeah so I mean we run glitch dot com visit south on which is estimated and that's obviously you know Michigan legal for us it's very important out but but either lots of companies where you you're not going to run your air traffic control system on it you're not gonna that's nine you're not gonNA run the Stock Exchange on it sure did that a lot of times or just like I wanted you know we have some old proprietary apple or company and we would like to have it ah you know drop something in the slack so we have a reporting system in I just wanted to set it up but I'm the one the president the office who has permission to launch production apt to do all the I'm stopping I don't WanNa ask the IT guys to do it for me in the third quarter of next year and so maybe I can just put something together and I think that that's the taste but I think it's true at home or somebody who's like I just wanted to you know put together a website to organize early neighborhood wants to clean up the park the playground I want to have to do a facebook group for it and there's a lot of different ways of capturing that impulse but their relapse and they really run and they there full stack and they are us any framework and toolkit API I do think a lot of times we start with that in Nicole were all of like in the technical bonafides and not so much the creative impulses destined care about the most is you actually figure out any tech you need to or any you will learn a teenage learn if there is an idea that just animates you so much that you need to create it in the world and Sony learn that way to begin with or at least started that way and And we wanted to sort of enable that because the expert coders are very well tended to there are tons of resource capabilities but the people who are like just need to get this idea out there and then maybe they got some experience coating or maybe you tone but will handle all that other complexity offer you WanNa go if you want to run the large scale production side like you are that's great that's all in there you don't have to think about that we start right yeah I think there's there's an interesting discussion here that kind of merges when when you start thinking about you know that seam between and I'm back when I was an agent he works especially I saw the same pronounce Stephen Moore but it's between the kind of creative people and technically adept people Zainur and develop per prototype kind of people where the designers kind of quarantines to this area where you know they might be able to make a motion prototypes they may even be able to work with HD on Java scrip- right but there's no way that that stuff is GonNa make it over that seem is not going to get into the quote real APP yet right and it got harder to because we introduce the frameworks of the toolkits build scripts that you couldn't just tweet it yourself now you you had have this knowledge
