"Kindness, all grace and glory, all blue birds and butterflies. Paul will Right then in second Corinthians five times I have received the 40 lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning three times I was shipwrecked for a night in the day I was adrift at sea. On frequent journeys in danger from rivers. Danger from bandits, danger from my own people danger from gentiles danger in the city danger in the wilderness danger it see danger from false brothers and sisters in toil and hardship through many a sleepless night hungry and thirsty, often without food, cold and naked, And I know he could have gone on. Opponents looking for suffering and persecution as some kind of a badge of honor. Rather, such suffering and persecution came his way simply because he was naming the name of Jesus. And sharing the gospel message of salvation. Such as the costly nous of discipleship, which we two should consider as we take up the cross. And follow him. Yet there is another aspect to the cost of discipleship. That is evident in the two passages. We read this morning on aspect of costly nous that I had never really considered before until I put these two passages together. Paul. Of course, we know Paul's great desire. In obedience to the Great Commission of our Lord was to take the gospel message to the ends of the earth. And in this time in period of history, the ends of the Earth would have been Rome. About that. We will talk more in the weeks to come. But at this point in the story Paul is not heading west towards Rome. He's heading east. Back to Jerusalem. So why is that? He was just completing his third missionary journey throughout Greece and is well on his way West. And so why not simply continue on? Why go all the way back to Jerusalem? Even as we read in the passages this morning as he is stopping to visit all of these churches that he had planted along the way. They beg with him. They plead with him. Don't go back to Jerusalem. They knew that it was not safe for him to go. He knew that as well. And yet he was bound and determined to go. Why Because he had an offering to give to them a generous undertaking as Sharon Red A collection of funds, which he had from for years been collecting among the gentile churches that he founded to support the church made up primarily of Jewish Christian's back in Jerusalem. This is yet another aspect of the costly nous of discipleship. Those of us who are not called to serve God in the mission field are cold to support those Here called by God to serve in the mission field, both with our prayers and with our financial offerings. These new believers in Jerusalem, primarily Jewish converts. We're suffering intense persecution, not only from Rome, and at this point now Christianity is an outlawed religion. But also social and economic ostracism. Those who confess Jesus has messiah were banished from the synagogue. Became outcasts among many of their friends, so they lost relationships and opportunities for fellowship in business for their shops. Paul knew this. And so as he planted churches in gentile grease, he also planted seeds of support from them. For the mother Church back in Jerusalem. It is evident man. As important as evangelism, Wass to the Ministry of Paul the sharing of the gospel of salvation of equal importance to him. Was the meeting. Very human needs like hunger. And deprivation. Needs come into categories. The ultimate need for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, Knowledge of God Obedience to Christ Commandments. And felt needs that vary from time and place and personal circumstances. There's an African proverb that says empty stomachs have no ears. And that's why missionaries help feed the hungry and heal the sick so that they'll be able to hear the gospel message and have their ultimate needs met..

You know you ain't got nothing left when the fire burns out, but but gold silver and precious stone. "Beads passages that's a lunar month around the month of April in the Julian calendar was called the Oster month all about dot com has this to say the more convincing argument is a Austria is a spring summer goddess venerated during April D. Osterman and representing the rebirth of life and nature after the harsh weather of the winter months the eggs symbol of the Oster is believed to represent that rebirth another symbols sacred to the Austria is the hair which eventually became the Easter bunny of today the cult of illustrator the hair was a symbol of fertility common tradition among Anglo Saxon speakers now by now he just may have occurred to you what's happened the early church fathers what they accomplished by inserting the spring equinox into the equation let me repeat myself what the early church fathers accomplished by inserting the spring equinox into the calculation of the date of posco was to cut the Passover loose from its moorings in scripture and move it to the date of pagan Easter whether accidentally or by intensity you be the judge so is it any wonder that all the symbols of Easter of ale strip tend to dominate from the Easter bunny to colored eggs to sunrise services remember airstream was the goddess of the dawn to the egg roll on the White House lawn and the death the burial and the resurrection of Jesus fade into the background there are still a few Christians who follow the ancient festival of the Christian Passover following the apostolic custom has recorded the New Testament there aren't very many of them but they're still out there not only read what Paul wrote to the Corinthians but I'll repeat it here he said purge out therefore the old leaven and this is a reference to getting a man out of the church who was corrupting church but you may be a new lump of dough as you are unleavened in other words they had all gotten the living out of their houses their problem is they hadn't got it out of the church in Lebanon is a type of corruption he then says even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us so let's keep the feast not with old leaven neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth okay so Paul calls it the Passover he says let's keep the feast he says it to a gentile church some thirty years after the ascension of Jesus Christ is our Passover let's keep the feast why anyone would think you would cut loose from the time of that faced it's hard to figure later in the same letter he wrote further on this issue he said in first Corinthians chapter eleven verse twenty three I received of the lord that which I delivered to you now you may want to underline that phrase in your mind I have received of the lord that which I delivered to you well what's that that the lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and said take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me in the same manner also he took the Cup when he had sub saying this Cup is the New Testament in my blood this do you as often as you drink it in remembrance of me now it seems important here that Paul emphasized the time of the observance the night in which Jesus was betrayed which night was the fourteenth day of the Passover moon it was the very next day that the Jews were sacrificing their Passover lambs in the temple it was at that same time that Jesus was being sacrificed on the steak with a Roman soldier finally thrusting a sword into his side not only this but the apostle Paul also made this statement this is what I received of the lord including the time of observance so what can you do about this well not much because you're highly unlikely to convince your church to change their time observance and those who observe a Christian Passover are few and far between the anti semitism of the early church fathers is regrettable nevertheless I do not recommend keeping the Passover with the Jews there cedar includes nothing about the blood and the body of Christ but you can observe it alone at home.

This is the best tasting cup of coffee. I've had an on site just fall. Find One of us on twitter instagram. And you can find this picture and you will also rejoice in this incredible coffee sleeve that we have here. Hey I was thinking whenever. It was prepping for this week of boring sermons because the title of this week. I'm very proud of As you know is when the sermon kills one I mean. Do you mean sleigh. Yes he's so proud of it exactly and If you just want to say if you have not pulled your car over there laughing or clapping at that title then this show is probably not for you Because that sermon. This title is Mrs Eight. This is your thank you. I really appreciate that. Well what I was thinking about it. I kept reminding myself I was trying to think of like. What's the most boring sermon I've ever heard and I can think of one story that I've never told you both if you say it's mine we're going to have a whole nother conversation? Yeah a couple years ago he was preaching okay so my brother and I went to London for his senior trip and he did not care a thing at all about going to see Charles. Persians church the church where he had preached at. But I of course of course we have to go so we cross London. I mean obviously we got fifteen times this before smartphones will certainly before we had smartphones and We did not know we were going. So we'd like mapquest directions. We get there we get to this guy's church and of course you know I. It's not preaching that right now that we have long since gone and the guy gets up and he begins to preach he preaches for over ninety minutes. Oh my over ninety minutes. My brother is staring daggers. Because he is like I. This is my senior trip. I cannot believe I'm here and it was listened that he might be a lights out. Preacher but that day who it was I just sat there and I kept. My brother kept going. When can we leave? When can we leave? We cannot leave in the middle of this guy sermon. We just can't do it. I can't allow it to happen. You could've should've yeah. We should have. It was painful. It was painful. I thought his sermon didn't kill me. But my thought my brother might. It might not have thought of that. Most boring sermon of heard. Yeah forget the ones. I've heard some zingers so I think We don't have a lot of boring preaching right here spoiled. Yeah smoker preachers. Well and this sermon. We don't know that it was boring but we certainly know that killed some money and we're going to look at it to the AX. Twenty opens up with what is essentially a map like you. Just you roll an ax. Twenty and it says. Hey after the uproar sees which is the rided emphasis which we talked about last time. We're acts it's this. Polston for the disciples and after encouraging them he said farewell. He departed from Macedonia. We had gone through those regions had given them much incursion came to Greece. He spent three months. They are plot was made against him by the Jews. As he was about to sell for Syria he decided to return to Macedonia superior. The berea son of Paris accompanying him and of the Thesselonians are stark. And Kim. This guy's of Derby and Timothy and the Asians tickets and TRAUMAS. They went on ahead. And we're waiting for us at Troas but we sailed away from Phillipine after the days of unleavened bread and in five days we came to the Metro as where we stay for seven days. So here we are guys one of the most riveting passages in scripture right. You don't mean that will. Sometimes you kind of Duke is like that though. Yeah you're like. Oh Yeah. The genealogy is so exciting. This isn't it. This is a great example of one of those. It's it's not a genealogy but man does it read like one of your life. Why do I care about any of those names that you're just throwing darts and it's so good? What's good about this well so remember where we are right like? We're in Paul's Third Missionary Journey and we're seeing that now. Something new is happening. Or maybe more appropriately. Something old is happening whereas we've seen his influence expanding up to this point now. We're going to see him reinforcing it. So he's going back to places that he's gone before and we know that during this time period this described in this paragraph if you compare it to his epistles that First Corinthians Second Corinthians and Romans or written during this time and they actually give a little bit of insight into why he's making this trip He's making this trip because he's gathering an offering from all of these churches that he intends to take to the church in Jerusalem so in these seven verses what seems like just a bunch of names and places. Yeah behind the scenes. This is the temple of his journey of collection. Right so we get the we get kind of where he goes and then we get this list of these names of guys and each of those people represents one of churches where he has taken a significantly sized church where he's taken up the offering You start to go. Oh I remember these names from other parts of the book of acts and and you might notice that. You don't see a representative from the Church of Philip Pie named in the list. But that's because most scholars would say because Luke who's writing the account would have actually been the travel companion who was representing church. So basically this is like an an entre. It's a it's a A delegation from these other churches who have not taking up an offering they have representatives from each of the churches that are now going to process to Jerusalem and remind remind the audience. If they can't remember why the offerings being collected for Jerusalem just talk and make a good impression when he gets to Jerusalem. Okay no not really. I mean won't hurt right right but no it's it's a display of unity. I mean if you think about it and and also I think Paul is painting that he might. He's run into difficulty just about everywhere that he's gone and so it does help that he will show up saying hey this is this is an offering from churches that are largely gentile church. That is largely Jewish in nature. And we've seen this a little before we saw the church at Antioch do something like this When there was a when there was a famine in the area. They organized a gift. Like this So and then another really cool thing about it is when you start paying attention to the names that are there you find out that you have one of the nicer pairings in here. That's Kinda draws attention. Era Kundus Because Aristarkhov his name sounds a lot like an English word. Sounds like Aristocrat? He's probably someone who's high in society and secaucus means number two so this is probably the second servant in a household so you would have promised the highest slave and then you would have the second slave and yet these two guys are now travel companions because the the you know the the social designator have been removed in terms of their status in the church. I did not know it's really cool. Isn't it it is the end of Romans. We talked about that. I think here before something similar where you have a governor of the city and you have than numbers used as people's names showing. They're actually writing this letter together. They're in community. These things that would have distinguished people before they're Banou Birth in Christ is no longer distinguishing feature. That's really cool. See I like I was prepared to skip right over these versus well tile. Both people are well and we didn't because that's really interesting. I had not spent any time thinking about what was going on behind the scenes or what is going on above all of this journey here but he gets to troas. Yeah and he's teaching and the story. I love this story. This is such a good story. It really is right. Dead guys break. The story tells the story here. Okay so you have Paul Preaching and you have Versus versus this is action or twenty a read seven through nine on the first day of the week when we were gathered together to break bread. Paul talked with them intending to depart on the next day and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There are many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered in a young man. Utica sitting at the window sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. This feels like a troll talking still being overcome by sleep. He fell down from the third story and was taken.

"I have an old Bible my wife gave me years and years ago it was an Oxford Sunday school teachers addition I sold I have to hold together with couple rubber bands but it has a second pecan chords in the back that's fine often useful and it lists by books the New Testament quotations of Old Testament scriptures and it's really surprising when you start paying attention and noticing them now you can find various tables of these on the internet if you care to compare them if you look at the notes I have on this program on my website I'll have footnotes which will give you a couple of links to them I know one was shocked to learn for example there are more than forty five direct quotations no not just allusions to it good quotations from the Old Testament in the book of Romans alone this sixteen chapters with forty five direct quotations now polls arguments in Romans are developed using the Old Testament as a prime authority listen to how he begins lawyer all a servant of Jesus Christ call to be an apostle separated to the gospel of god which he had promised before by his profits in the holy scriptures this is the term that the New Testament writers will use for what we call the old testament to them they were the holy scriptures concerning his son Jesus Christ our lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh and declared to be the son of god with power according to the spirit of holding this by the resurrection of the dead old Paul as he is when the industry on for awhile but his point was Hey all this stuff started with profits telling us all about it in the Old Testament and he goes on in the book of Romans again and again to cite scriptures specifically from the old testament to make his point he wrote to Timothy Layton live this is the last letter of Paul's life in second Timothy chapter three he wrote to the young man he said continue in the things that you have learned and been assured of knowing of whom you have learned them end that from a child how is this guy but I know he was certainly in his thirties possibly his forty still to Paul young man and what does that mean about his association with the holy scriptures from his childhood well it was what we call the Old Testament this is from a child you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith in Jesus Christ which scriptures the holy scriptures the Old Testament what are they going to do they're gonna make you wise unto salvation through which maze faith in Jesus Christ from the Old Testament yes then he goes on to say this all scripture and what you're talking about the Old Testament is given by inspiration of god and the Greek says is god breathed and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness that the man of god may be proficient thoroughly furnished unto all good works now how can you miss what Paul's talking about here he's talking about but what we call the Old Testament and is profitable for doctrine reprove correction instruction in righteousness so why owner would people seem to think that the first Christians didn't look to appreciate and depend on the Old Testament but one of the most striking examples of appealing to the Old Testament comes from none other than the apostle Paul whom many people think said the old has no done away with someone in Corinth was beating up on Paul in fact they were attributing to Paul motives that he had long since disproven by the way he lived his life the way he conducted his affairs but in first Corinthians nine he decides look I got explain this to you folks this is Emma not an apostle am I not free have I not seen Jesus Christ my lord aren't you might work in the lord if I may I may not be an apostle to other people but good grief folks I have to be to you you are the seal of my apostleship you in the lord our was in the I mean the very fact that you were in the faith demonstrates my apostleship now my answer to them that examine me is this now it's fascinating to me reading Paul's epistles and I've taught them in college for many years and it's always a strange thing when you come to these examples of where people were people who are trying to cut off Paul's legs he was such a strong influence that's the only way would be leaders can get any traction and all was by destroying the confidence people had in Paul sold they accused him of trying to make a gain of the Corinthians almost common complaints people make about preachers down through the generations Hayes after your money that's what they said about Paul so having made his point Paul says look have we not the power to eat and drink it doesn't mean that we have the power to eating drinking means at your expense don't we have the authority to do that don't have the power to lead about a sister a wife as well as the other apostles and the brother in the lord even save us or mine I'm more numbers are we the only ones that have the power to stop working in an ordinary job and live off the gospel no they all do it now by this he means don't I have the power to eat and drink at your expense must I get a job and serve the church's part time now in fairness to Paul that is exactly precisely what he had done and everyone knew it but he goes on to develop this he says who goes to war for his own charges also dressed pay him self who planted vineyard and doesn't get to eat any of it who feeds a far can doesn't get some of the milk from the flock no logic he says is saying there is nothing wrong with the church supporting a man like Paul while he works Paul has been given the logic of the whole thing the reason with them on it he appeals to an authority recognized by the church what was that a forty well first rate say I these things as a man our doesn't the law say the same thing for it is written in the law of Moses what Paul is appealing to the law of Moses yep now here's here's what the law of Moses says you shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that trades out the corn now really do you think is god's word about oxen or does he say it all together for our sakes for our sakes no doubt this is written why did he that plows should plowing hold he that threshers in home should be apart taker of his hope now this is really an astonishing example first at Paul appeals to the law of Moses is the finder of right and wrong second that the law isn't even about oxen think about it how many people actually owned an ox they used for threshing his right fist to the church in the city of chords these were big city people then I have oxen and yet he is citing a law of Moses and said Hey it's for us and third what's wrong feeding the animal before you start to work then you would need a Muslim would you I mean what's the big deal here well finally we have the apostle Paul telling a gentile church in Corinth that the law of Moses was written for them and in this he agrees entirely with Jesus not one stroke of a pen shall pass from the law or the profits out while heaven and earth Stan no one's Paul's point what to driving at here he says this verse eleven begin to tie it up if we have spruce sewn to use spiritual things is it a big deal if we shall reap your carnal things if others can partake of this power over you want us but we haven't done it we suffer all things less we should hinder the gospel of Christ all came to court the first time he was very sensitive to this sort of thing so he stayed with a quill and Phyllis Priscilla and worked with them in their business they were tent makers that was Paul's craft do you not know Paul said that day who minister about holy things Lee of of the things in the temple cites the example the priesthood they that wait it's the altar can actually partake of the alternate meet the comes of that older even still has the lord ordained that day which preach the gospel should leave of the gospel the whole point here side in the law of Moses was to demonstrate to this church that it was okay to compensate their pastors now in the process of this is an aside I talk about in the book loan covenants but some of the laws are aphorisms they actually give you a a homely illustration like muzzling Oxley's trading out the corn which is not the point of the law the point of the law is that people who work should get paid and Paul uses to say even the people who work in the gospel but he said I am done that I haven't written edition I should start getting money from you it be better for me to die than any man should make my glory and void because though I preach the gospel I don't have anything to the glory of it's a matter of necessity to me woe unto me if I don't preach the gospel now if I do this willingly I have a reward if against my will well I just got a dispensation of the gospel so how do I get a reward well in the when I preach the gospel I may make the gospel of Christ without charge but I abuse not my power in the gospel then he says something that I took me a long time to come to understand this is first nineteen for the bowl I be free from all man I have made myself sermon unto all that I may gain the more as I said that's striking because I didn't really understand it for the longest time it took getting away from a denominational ministry to striking out as a non denominational service ministry before I personally got the point one of the easiest things in the world is for a minister or teacher of the Bible to get stuck in a church or an organization and lose his freedom in various ways great and small Paul has a blessing of knowing this right from the start and every pastor knows what I'm talking about for in accepting that role in a church he is somewhat bound to that service and to the doctrinal stress structure of that church someone should do a survey of pastors some day and ask if there is some point of believes they hold that they don't feel free to preach in most cases pastor will decide it's not that important the value of doing the job makes it worth leaving small issues on the table but that makes it all the more important that there be somewhere somehow independent voices who call on us to think voices with no temporal authority but with the moral authority of an independent itinerant preacher people whose power is.

"Of this station. See 'em network is pleased to present Ronald L dart born to win. The listeners to our one station in the British Isles will know Pentecost as Sunday White Sunday that is from the custom of the newly baptized wearing white. I was surprised on a visit to London few years ago to find it whit Monday is also a holiday there. They get a two day weekend. Brits do based on an ancient Jewish holiday to go figure that the Jews. No as Cheviot or the feast of weeks. Now, when you understand what Pentecost is it is a wonder, it isn't a much bigger thing. Among Christians Pentecost was the day. The Holy Spirit was poured out in power on the early church. It was the day. They baptized three thousand souls in one day. I don't think the is ever done that sense. It has been called the birthday of the church, and you would think it would be celebrated in fine style. But for most of Protestant Christianity it passes unnoticed. It's just another Jewish holiday, and many don't even notice that Pentecost is the Greek word that means fiftieth in acts two I one when the day of Pentecost was fully come. They were all with one accord in one place. Okay. But what is saying is when the fiftieth day had arrived, they were all together in one place, but the fiftieth day from what will answer that question. We have to go back aways. The Jewish holidays is were apt to call them or all outlined in a book Lavigne icus chapter twenty three God said to Moses speak to the Israelites and say to him. These are my appointed feasts the appointed feast of the Lord which. You are to proclaim to be sacred assemblies are seven of them throughout the year. But the one we're talking about is spoken of in the Vikas Twenty-three beginning along about verse nine the Lord said to Moses speak to the Israelites and say to them. When you enter the land. I am going to give you and you reap a harvest bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest, he is to waive the sheaf of grain before the Lord. So it will be accepted on your behalf. The priest is to waive it on the day after the Sabbath. Now, there's not a lot of information there even time of year would not be known to possibly except for one thing. It turns out that we're talking about the very first ripe green of the new year. And historically, we know that that is barley in Palestine. And we know that that day is very close to the first day of unleavened bread. When you enter the land. He said now presumably during the forty years in the wilderness. This could not be done because they didn't plant nor harvest during that period of time later in verse fourteen Leviticus twenty three verse fourteen you must not eight any. Bread or roasted or new green until the very day. You bring this offering to your God, you know, in a way, it's like saying, none of this crop is yours until first of all you acknowledge that I gave it to you. First thing you gotta do Donini grain in any form harvest Ashif. Just one bring in before me have the priest wave it back and forth admitting I gave you this and thanking me for it after that you can eat the crop to your heart's desire. Now, he says from the day after the Sabbath day, you brought the she for the wave offering count off seven full weeks count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord from wherever you live bring to loaves made of two tenths of EPA of fine. Flour baked with yeast as a wave offering of the first fruits to the Lord. Now, this is done on Pentecost, which is also called the feast of first roots. Now, what on earth is any of this have to do with Christianity? Well, more than you might think take that word first fruits, the idea at first seems to be merely a requirement that before you indulge yourself in the fruit of the ground. You have to put God first now that lesson the loan is worthwhile. And so the ceremonial acknowledging of God as source of every perfect gift is a good thing. But the concept of first fruits took on special meaning to the early church, and you might wonder if you read the New Testament at crops up where did this come from? How did they arrive at this? For example. Here's first Corinthians chapter fifteen which people do know their New Testaments. Well, will call the resurrection chapter. The apostle Paul I fifteen verse nineteen says this. If in this life, only, we have hope in Christ. We are all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept for since by man came death. By man, came also, the resurrection of the dead as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive, but every man in his own order Christ the first fruits afterward, they that are Christ's at his coming. So we immediately see something here that there is this connection with the resurrection from the dead that Jesus Christ was the first one resurrected from the dead and says it calls him the first fruits it suggestive that there is more to follow. James draws the same. Meaning for this in the first chapter of the pixel James he says this every good and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the father of lights with whom is no variable nece, neither shadow of turning of his own. Will he begat us with the word of truth that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures? So now, we have Christ is the first fruits. Now, we learn we also are a kind of first fruits, and then there is an enigmatic cohort of people you find in the book of revelation often referred to as the hundred and forty four thousand in revelation chapter fourteen John is standing and he'd looks. And he sees a lamb standing on Mount Zion with him hundred and forty four thousand having his father's name written in their foreheads. He said I heard a voice from heaven like the voice of many waters as the voice of a great thunder. I heard the voice of harpers harping with their hearts and they sang as it were a new song before the throne before the four creatures that were there in the elders. No man could learn that song but the hundred and forty four thousand who were redeemed from the earth this center. Forty four thousand has been given many many interpretations down to the years, and I'm not going to try to touch that today. But it does tell us this about the hundred and forty four thousand these are they who were not defiled with women for their virgins. These are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes these were redeemed from among men being the first fruits unto God. And to the lamb. So the early church, even the gentile church was strongly connected to what you and I call the Old Testament, they called it the holy scriptures. Because it was all scripture. They knew what we call the New Testament didn't exist even in part for some twenty to thirty years of the history of the church, but the gentiles of that era were what people call God favors that is they believed in and worship the God of the Old Testament before they ever heard the gospel instead of accepting Greek God Roman God, these gentiles accepted the true God and served him to the best of their abilities. And listen to the law being read in the synagogue every Sabbath day, so they would know what God's will boss now for these people that you N gentile who were Christians the imagery of the first fruits was inexorably tied to the reservoir. Section of the dead. Paul makes this very clear in the first chapter of his pistol to the Colossians. He says giving thanks to the father who has made us meet to be partaking in the inheritance of the saints in light who has delivered us from the power of darkness who has translated us into the kingdom of his dear son, in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Then it against outline who this Jesus is. He said he is the image of the invisible. God the first born of every creature for by him or all things created that are in heaven and earth, visible and invisible. Thrones dominions principalities or powers all things were created by him. And for him. He is before all things and by him all things consist, you know, Paul really gets his hammer out and drives this nail in. And then he says this being sure you know, who is talking about. And he he's talking about Christ is the head of the body that you're who is the beginning the first born from the dead that in all things he might have the preeminence Christ. I is not only the first born of all creatures. He is the first born from the dead. And this idea of a harvest of souls from this earth at the time of the resurrection of them being born from the dead as Christ was born from the dead. His what this is all about. No, keeping all that. In mind. We're going to walk back fifty days from that first Pentecost of the Christian church, and we're going to see what we find their stay with me. I'll be right back. If.

"Today. I want to show you from the life of the apostle Paul that when we pursue a God, given dream, and let me assure you, God has a dream for everyone of you. God has a vision for every one of you. But when you pursue that God-given dream in your life. You got to overcome obstacles you're going to defeat any enemy. You're going to meet every challenge, and you're going to be victorious even in the worst of your circumstances. Romans fifteen fourteen to thirty three. He shows us in those few words the power of vision for life. He show us how to have joy in fulfilling. God's purpose for your life. He shows us the motivation, which can only help us not just persevere but thrive in life, regardless of the circumstances. First of all Paul shows us here that it is the first suit of that dream, it is the pursuit of that vision. It is the first year of God's purpose for your life is gonna be first of all self sacrificing. Secondly is going to be God glorifying. Thirdly is going to be forever. Dreaming you never stop dreaming and finally constantly kneeling in verses fifteen and sixteen you can see that for through fulfillment in life. You're going to have to have self. Sacrificing. Secondly versus seventeen and nineteen. It has to be God glorifying versus twenty to twenty one forever. Dreaming and finally versus thirty two thirty three constantly kneeling looking in the details now. Okay, self-sacrificing is that true? True. True secret for fulfillment. Some of you already said, what are you talking about? I mean, everything I learned in school everything here in the media, everything I see in the movies, everything in our culture says that fulfillment is get it all and grab it all and keep it all that's exactly the problems. The reason we have problems in our culture is that we going right against the word of God. And the New Testament every believer in Jesus Christ as a priest. You don't need to go to a preschool confession because every man and woman boy and girl who surrendered alive. Oh, Jesus Christ. The New Testament said you are a priest. Can I get an Amen. Question. What was the greatest joy in the fulfillment of life and Old Testament priest offering sacrifices to God right today. We don't offer lambs or grains or stuff like that. No. No. No, no. And the New Testament way all the priests are offering themselves to God. Amen. And because every believe as a priest in the New Testament, therefore every believer in Jesus Christ has a sacred call on his life. And now, whether you're a shopkeeper or a doctor or a preacher wherever your vacation may be you have a sacred. Call can I get an Amen. Whatever your vacation is God is calling you to offer sacrifices to him on a daily basis. Not just once a year or certain occasions every day place. Scientists tell us that the way we perceive ourselves is going to impact and determine the way we live when I perceive myself as a member of the Royal family. I'm going to behave like it. If you perceive yourself. As a child of the living God who gonna inherit the entire universe. Where Jesus you're gonna live like it when you perceive yourself as a man of God. And a woman of God, then the devil has no right to come into your life, and harass you. And he when he does you can kick him out in Jesus name when you perceive yourself as a priest who delight himself in living up to the calling of constantly offering oneself as a sacrifice to the Lord. You will constantly offer your time and your talent your treasure up to the Lord is a sacrifice win your perceive yourself as a foreign diplomat representing your home country, which is heaven, you are going to be very anxious to represent your country your home country. Well, now, whether you know it or not this is how God perceives you see this is how he perceives you. Don't worry about how people perceive you this is how God perceives you. He perceives you as a priest as a man a woman boy or girl with the holy calling on your life. And therefore it is time for the army of the living God to see themselves as God sees them. Not that they see themselves versus fifteen and sixteen. Paul priestly duty was to offer God as a sacrifice with thanksgiving. All of the gentiles whom God us Paul to bring to the kingdom of God who moved from hell to heaven from darkness to light and your previously duty. I don't know what it is your duty. Maybe that you're going to sacrifice some comfort zone things in your places in your life in witnessing for Christ in the hostile community. Your priestly duty may be to give sacrificial to the work of God. You'll priestly duty may be to give a word of encouragement to everyone. You mean, you appreciate you re might be serving your family. Your priestly duty may be a helping others. Whatever your priestly duty may be it is you're offering of a sacrifice to the Lord. That's the first thing. Fulfilled. Life is self sacrifice life. Secondly, fulfilled life. Look at verses seventeen. Eighteen nineteen is God glorifying Paul said therefore preached offering sacrifices to God serving him with all my heart bringing the offering to the Lord, which is the souls of those who have been saved. Secondly, he said therefore, I glory in my financial NetWorth. No, I glory in marina holdings. No, I glory in my degrees and my compliments no glory in Christ. Jesus beloved Paul. Accomplished so much third of the New Testament has his name at least the third not more. But he doesn't grow in any of that. Instead, he said God did it all although he used me and for which I'm very grateful. But he did it all beloved listen to me. God must have always get all of the glory. It is okay to brag about Jesus. It's okay. To both of the law. Don't miss where I'm gonna tell you when you do that you're gonna be helped over the pitfalls of life. Let me tell you, I know those pitfalls, and I'm talking about is going to help you over being constantly complaining and murmuring and seeing every little problem as a huge thing. And you can't get moving from it. Is going to help you stop playing. The martyr mentality is going to help you from constantly falling into self pity me poor me, why is this happening to me? Had Paul learned not to brag on the Lord. He would have said the following. Now. Don't find it in your bible. I'm making it up. Okay. He would have said the following. I'm know human nature because I'm one of them. All let me tell you about my experience in ICU. Neom. I was stoned an acronym man because I stood firm. I got stoned. The truth is everywhere. I go I got stoned for Jesus not stoned in the way, you think about it. Young people. This is stone with stone stone. Dear all Barnabus. He always managed to save his pretty face. Every time there's trouble, but of us has gone, but not me I stood firm. I wouldn't flinch. In fact, one stone knock me down completely. It would have killed the average man. But not me, I'm Paul when I got up from being beaten by these stones are found her all of my companions, they cut and run and I stood alone. But that's not harmful. So that's not how he saw it. That's not how perceived in his life. He gave God all how many of the glory. He got all how many all of the credit in Galatian chapter six verse fourteen. He said may I never both except in the cross of Jesus Christ. And here in Romans. He said to be sure to be sure got accomplished a great deal through me. But all this with his power that he gave me an order for signs and wonders a miracle steak place to be sure it's the Holy Spirit who accomplish his purpose in my life. But it's only his power that enabled me to do. This beloved listen to me. I know today's many a preacher. They brag about all sorts of things some brag about the part of the positive thinking. God bless him some brag about their communication skills. Some who brag about the fact that they have power in the tongue whatever they say. It happens. We need to get back on the bench cry to God instead of bragging about all of our abilities. For a fulfilled life. It has to be self sacrificing fulfilled life. It has to be God glorifying Thirdly versus twenty two twenty nine. Is forever? Dreaming. Listen to me, God has it been for you. God has a vision for you. And if you don't know what it is you better stay on your knees until he gives it to you. Because he does have one for you for each one of you. And he gets out. He gives us to the big breaches and other. No, no, no. He has one for each one of you. You are his child if your child is a dream for you. And the moment you stop dreaming for God. You have died before dying. I want you to imagine with me just for a minute. There's a pilot flying airliners from Atlanta, Georgia to New York, and this particular pilot when it gets up to thirty thousand feet, he decides in his mind, I guess he's gonna show. The passengers a good time. He's going to show them some sites from the air. And so he takes a PA system and announced he said, we're gonna see some insights instead of landing on time. Well, how long is it gonna take? I don't know. Really? What are you going to do when you run out of gas would land where I dunno nearest airport. I guess what? It would be a final destination. I dunno. I want you to imagine the nightmare that that flight is. But beloved, listen to me the truth is there are so many people who live their lives that way just like that pilot. They don't know where they're going. They don't care where they're going. And they don't know when they get there. They just drift in life. I pray to God, not a soul night listening to me with around the world here in this place would be in that boat. They got here there and everywhere but in reality, they're going nowhere fast. I wanted to contrast this with the apostle Paul he had a clear vision. He had a dream. He had a goal God-given dream God-given vision God-given goal to accomplish in his life. What was it to preach the gospel where it's never been preached. That's a big goal verse. Twenty four his alternate destination is Spain. He said why Spain? Because back then Spain was thought of the of the world now is it in order to fulfill this vision, this dream that God gave him he said, I'll I check the offerings from the gentile churches to take it to the Jewish church in Jerusalem because they're in desperate need, and it's a sacrificing the Jewish believers for giving us visas, and redemption, and so he said, I'll take that offering from the Macedonians and the currency of all the other churches, and I'm gonna take it to Jerusalem. And then I'm going to buy a ticket. That's nothing your bible, but I'm going to go on a trip to Rome we can fellowship together. And then you give me some financial help and helped me along the way to Spain. That's the goal. That's the dream vision. I want you to listen carefully. Because some of you were wait a minute. What happened?.

"Her first reading comes from the book of exodus thirty five beginning at verse one Moses assembled all the congregation of the Israelites and said to them, these these are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do six days, you shall work. But on the seventh day, she'll have a holy solemn rest to the Lord wherever does any work on it shall be put to death. You show kindle, no fire in all your dwellings on this apathy, Moses, that's all the congregation of the Israelites. This is the thing that the Lord has commanded take from among you an offering to the Lord let whoever is of a generous heart. Bring the Lord's offering gold, silver and bronze blue purple in Cranston yarns in fine. Linen goat's hair, tan Rams skin and fine leather acacia would oil for the light spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense in onyx stones and gems to be set in the fod in Nebraska piece. This is the word of our Lord, thanks to God. Second lesson is taken from Paul's second letter to the current themes beginning at the ninth chapter picking up at the sixth verse Paul here is writing to the Corinthians about an offering that he is taking among the gentile churches that he has planted on behalf of the persecuted church back in Jerusalem. And so he gets to chapter nine speaking of that offering he comes to verse six and says the point is this the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly in the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance. So that by always having enough of everything you may share a bundle in every good work as it is written. He scatters abroad he gives to the poor his righteousness endures forever. He meaning God who supplies seed to the sewer and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness, you'll be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us for the rendering of this ministry. Not only supplies the needs of the saints. But also overflows with many thanksgivings to God to the testing of this ministry, you glorify God by your obedience to the confession the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them. And with all others while they long for you and pray for you. Because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you thank God for his indescribable gift. And that is thank you. Indeed for the gift of this day gift of your hand, a gift of this privilege of worship, by your invitation. We pray now that as we sit beneath the teaching of your word that we might be enriched and encouraged to live into the very image and likeness of Christ in whose name we now have the privilege of prey. A man this past month. We have been talking about what it means to have. They lived out faith recall the question, I posed at the very beginning of the series that if it was against the law to be a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you? We've been using Dr Frank Harrington's guidelines to help us explore what this means to have lived out faith, and he's identified four components, which we then have been examining and expanding on. He begins with worship regularly. Worship is the center of our life together. It is the essential of the Christian faith. There are many organizations that could do almost everything that we do as a church. Save one. This experience of worship this is what we are uniquely called to do second. We've been called to live worthy Lee, the price tag, which God has placed on our lives is the sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ for us and for our salvation. So we are called to live lives in a manner that is worthy of that sacrifice last week. We then talked about the importance of serving eagerly service being a trademark moniker of the Christian life, and we're code to engage in service, joyfully and eagerly. You might recall the Frederick beak. Noor quote, I used the place. God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep need meat. And that is the place where we find ourselves serving eagerly, which means today, we will end our series has we discussed the concept of giving generously. Curiously I don't preach very often about stewardship about Christian giving and it's not because I don't think it's important. It is because I believe that tab is an extremely incredibly generous congregation. You haven't been we have been for generations that being said, though, even if the church did not need our money. It is still important that we talk and teach unchristian stewardship because it's so integral to our understanding of Christian discipleship through. Through the years. I've had many people come out of worship and say, John I really enjoyed your message today. But I loved the children's sermon. Why is that? Well, it's short, and it's to the point. And it often has an object lesson like these wonderful Chuck Taylor shoes. The Dan brought in this morning that makes the sermon memorable. So today, I'm going to give you an object lesson on Christian giving that I believe will be short and simple, and I hope memorable for our purposes today. Let's just say that this piece of paper that I'm holding up represents everything that God has given you. Put it another way. It is everything that you have now. Wait a minute. You say why can you correlate everything that I have and say that it all comes from God. Well, again, the answer is pretty simple. What did you bring into life with you? And what will you take out of this life with you? I mean, there is a raw nakedness when we see a newborn baby. But there is an equally raw poignancy at the end of life. I remember walking out of a nursing home when evening with a woman whose husband had just died as I walked her to her car. I offered to carry the things of his that she was taking home with her now bear in mind. This man had been extremely successful in life. But I found myself carrying his most essential possessions in a plastic bag from Walgreens. A pair of slippers. Pair of glasses and toothbrush. That is kind of the starting point of our understanding of Christian stewardship that all that we are in all that we have has been given us by God. Hence it all belongs to God. Anything we possess including life itself is not something that we own as much as it is something that's on loan to us. And the sooner we come to that understanding, the sooner we'll be able to talk about the relative importance, or we could say the relative importance of all of this stuff, we have including our money. For we're called to be good stewards of all of it. As long as it's entrusted to our care with the standing that. It will one day be returned. So the question we need to be asking as we consider this idea of giving generously. As a lived out faith. We the question we should be asking you. So what am I supposed to do with all that God has given to me? So we talk about giving generously. As talking about not just what we do with our money that would be far too simple too narrow. It's what do I do with all that God has given to me? My time my talents. My treasures my opportunities. My education, my friendships, my resources, there are many ways that we can think about Christian stewardship, and well, we should take us beyond money. But today, I would like to talk with you about money why? Because Jesus talked a lot about money. In fact, he talked more about money than he did any other single topic. And why is that because he realized with an easy trap? It is we can fall into when we start talking about our own sense of success or where we looked for a sense of security. But when Jesus talked about money, his interest was not so much in dollars or in his case Dinara in talking about discipleship. He was more interested in talking about faith, then he was in finances. And yet we quickly realized that those are all interwoven together. They impact one another. So how are we supposed to respond to God for all? He has given to us in our lesson from Second Corinthians. Paul gives us some very practical guidelines forgiving beginning with our first response being one of gratitude. What was one of the first lessons? You talk to your children. Remember to say, thank you. It's a good spiritual lesson as well. Here we read God loves a cheerful giver, the Greek word for cheerful is hilarious tough. As in hilarious. God love the hilarious giver. And why is that? Because they give more. It's because they get it. They get what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. And so they respond. We respond cheerfully joyfully enthusiastically because we understand that we are simply giving in response to a gift that has already been given to us. We become hilarious givers when we recognize. I the goodness of God that has been given to us. And Secondly the opportunity that we've been given to partner with God in the work. He's doing in the world. So when we give cheerfully joyfully, it means we're coming alongside the work of the church. The work of Christian ministries around the globe. And we are partnering with God in the work of redemption. And that allows us to give cheerfully tearfully. Cheerful NASCAR born of gratitude. Further were instructed to give regularly. We use the word regular when we talked about worship worship regularly. Our giving should be regular because as Christians are giving is not just the dues that we pay. It's not just to keep the lights or the heat on in Turk-. It really is an act of our worship. In fact, it is an act of our worship week in and week out. And Paul adds a theological understanding to are doing so on a horizontal level. It's the way we give and bless others on a vertical plane. It's the way we return our thanksgiving to God. Have you ever heard a recipient of a gift say, thank the Lord? Why are they thanking the Lord we're the ones who've given the gift, right? But do you see how these two are woven together, our giving our meeting of the needs of our neighbors is an expression of thanksgiving to God. And it ties together the two great commandments of our Lord love. God. Love your neighbor as yourself. And then Paul as there's still a third benefit to our giving where we ourselves are able to grow in faith, as we see how God is using even the likes of us to further the work of his kingdom. So can you see how these are all kind of time together that worship regularly has something to do with living worthy Lee and serving eagerly and giving generously. Paul goes on to instruct that are giving should be intentional. That we should be thoughtful and prayerful about are giving rather than simply waiting for some emotional heart string to be pulled or waiting to see what's left over at the end of the month. Well, there's certainly nothing wrong with spontaneous giving we watch the widow and the giving of the might there's also a discipline. The comes in intentional giving that helps us grow in our faith, quite literally when we make a pledge say to the church or to Christian ministry what we're doing is. We're trusting God in advance. We're saying I trust you God to provide for me as I'm making a pledge to provide for someone else. And that is in fact, an act of faith. Scripture, also instructs that are giving should be proportional..
