Were incapacitated woman was raped and then gave birth by the way, they're not required to have a state license. So state Senator Heather Carter told ABC fifteen that's one of the things we're working on right now. We're trying to provide state regulatory oversight to make sure that we have a consistent policy in place across all of our our facilities and the governor put out an executive order trying to increase protections for patients like the victim of hacienda. Then he sent a letter to the attorney general asking him to take legal action against hacienda. Then we heard that state agencies were calling around to see if. Other facilities will be able to accept haciendas patients sounds at least a little like they're preparing for the place to shut down. And Amazon is Medicare agency said they're talking to patients families about other options that once again sounds like the state's ready for healthcare hacienda style, the shutdown then yesterday hacienda seemed to beat them all to the punch and announced they're closing their intermediate care facility where that patient was raped and gave birth. "Arizona's news station. KTAR news on ninety two three FM Bruce, Saint Jeeves and Pamela Hughes. He was going to be a force to be reckoned with if he had chosen to run for Senate. Former attorney General Grant woods announced today just a little while ago that he would not be running for Senate. One of the things that I'm not going to run as a democrat here. I'm not interested in spending the next eighteen months. Running against Democrats. So that then we can go against MC Sally and thirty days later early ballots. Go out that's in reference to being going through a democratic primary which he said in his travels and conversations that there were going to be we think we know of at least two other people at strong candidates in their own right? Mark Kelly and Ruben guy. Yeah. Who would be running for this the democratic opportunity to run against Martha mcsally for Senate. And that he didn't he didn't wanna get into that fight with them, which I you know, I mean, there's a part of me that I mean, I can't tell him to get into the fighting don't want to get into. But I find it disappointing because I think that once again, we have an example of another politician potential politician personality, whatever you wanna say who's not extreme enough and doesn't pass the purity test for either party, and we pressed grant on that. And here's how he reacted to fight is not with these. Guys who were looking to to ride or anyone else who may jump in? I may agree or disagree with them on certain things. But at this stage in my life. Okay. I'm not thirty years old forty years old miam- Bishen is not to be United States Senator. Don't respect basic American values like Donald Trump out of the system. That is not that's not what it would be about. We wouldn't be talking about that for the next year and a half. But the system is the system. The primary system is the primary system. It is what you go through. And again count me as one of the ones that's disappointed problem saying that the grand at that. He was unwilling to go through that process to get to the point where he could run for Senate and that's frustrating. And and we've seen this more often than not that people who are not on the fifteen to twenty percent fringes of the political spectrum either either side are left with no candidate that actually represents their values that we are the primary system as the political parties become more and more extreme leave you with two people who you would never want to be in the same room with you know, what we had Chris her stem democratic political analyst in to talk about this. And he challenged you. And I both Bruce going really like. I think he called us naive saying, it's always been this way. Wh what's wrong with you guys? It's always been you know, you've got to move to the fringe in order to win the primary and then you're supposed to pivot back. Right. Come more, centrist, as you go through a general, and he's right, it it has always been that way. But it doesn't seem like it's always been this bad. It seems the beginning to the left or this to the extreme. Right. There you go. I like extremes. No, no. And and the majority of people listening are not in the extremes when we go. Yeah. We we stand by. And we watched this process move forward and in two thousand twenty we're going to have a chance to vote again for Senate between what very well may be too extreme candidates with nobody actually being a centrist no-one actually representing the majority of. "Bruce St James and Pamela Hughes. You're just joining us. We have former attorney General Grant woods in studio making the announcement here on our air that he is not going to run for the Senate seat in the great state of Arizona in grant, you talked about behind closed doors. You could beat Martha mcsally you talked about the whole conversation leading up to as you were exploring whether or not this is something that you would do that. There is a void in DC of individuals holding the president accountable the also working with both sides of the aisle. Like, we saw your great friend. Senator McCain do who now fills that void. Because what I'm upset about is that you seem to say you're not running because both parties are being pulled so far the left in so far to the right when we. We both know that most of Americans most Arizonans or somewhere in the middle totally would represent that. But instead you're saying I'm not gonna play the game where people that are being pulled the where do the people in the middle go. Well, I don't know. It's a screwed up part of the process right now is that, you know, we'll see like, for example, if the if the Democrats nominate well, if they nominate for Senate here someone who's, you know, extremely liberal on the democratic side, Martha mcsally on the other side, where do you go? I don't know if for president against Donald Trump who should be easily defeated if instead of nominating Joe Biden or someone like that they nominate, you know, Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, then where does the average guy go, and that's very good question. That problem we have is that there's a couple of problems one is that the people who vote in primaries. The activists have gotten more extreme as time has gone on more. So. So consequently, if you have a big primary, it's very difficult to win it unless you're pulled to the left or the right? Was pulled so far the laundering hers. No, she didn't. But she didn't have much of a primary. I mean, she had a kind of a minor candidate running against her. She didn't have the the the big time folks didn't run against her incur- Ston. Let's just talk about her for a second. I have been fortunate. The senior Senator in Arizona, I have been close to all of my life. I Barry Goldwater, and then John McCain and Kirsten cinema. And I think Kirsten is is a very unique a person, and and Senator and boy, she she is the most disciplined person, I know as far as being unmasked, and what she wants to do. And when she said, I want to get things done. That's what she wants to do. And I think she's going to surprise a lot of people there in that her bipartisanship and how she's willing to reach across the aisle. Another thing, you should know is that a lot of these people who were upset with me. And on the democratic side they were upset because that I will not talk about Republicans or. Disavowal Republicans like they're the enemy. You know? Jan brewer has come up one hundred times in this thing. Ruben Gago congressman he's gone public nationally, saying oh grant Wood's helped. Jan brewer. Yeah. I did. She was the governor. And we did some good things with her. She did many things that I disagree with. She's gone totally off the deep end on Trump right now. But John, and I are friends and I'm not going to. Here's here's something. I would advise people out there. Don't walk past an old friend to make new friends. I won't do that. I'm a very loyal person. I told you we were gonna do this one way or the other right here. And here, I am right. That's the way it is. If you guys were doing a podcast in your basement. This is where we would have done it. I'm not gonna say that light, which they would like they're upset that I say nice things about Jeff flake that. I think he's a good, man. But I think Mitt Romney is a great, man. Okay. Mitt romney. Oh, my God, you know. And then even John McCain, I've had people that are very you're too close to John McCain. He's this. He's that. And he said really guess what? If I've got a back away one inch from John McCain to be United States Senator I wouldn't want that job in a million years. I won't do it. He's he's one of my heroes and one of my closest friends grant, Wood's former Arizona attorney general in studio if you missed it live just a little bit ago said he will not run. I want to say here's exactly what you said. You said I'm not gonna run as a democrat. I'm not going to run against Democrats in a primary does that mean, you would run as something other than? Democrat or were you just been I I'm not trying to make it cute with understand? Now. I don't see that. I think this is this is your shot here. You know, another crazy thing is that this is the primary is eight over eighteen months out. And that's what we're talking. Now. What is this world going to look like what is going on? What's politics going gonna look like a year from now? Let's see how everybody let's see what happens. I don't know where you're going to be yourself and eighteen maybe I will you can understand Chambal express the frustration in and company is one of them is there are more and more people who are the types of candidates the types of politicians. Something other than the fringes. I understand all of them have reasons why they're leaving public office. Why they won't run. And in it feels at least to a lot of us in the middle. They go again, we're we're left holding the bag you hold your nose. And you you vote for the one you hate the lace as I understand that and two things one. I'm trying to force you to do. No. You don't wanna do one thing. I wednesday. I the only downside for me today is that we do feel like I feel like I'm disappointing a lot of people. I mean, so many people and I wanna thank everybody out there. The people who have come forward who complete strangers. And and advocated for me and promoted me, I it's it's great. And I'm sorry, if I'm disappointing them, but I have to make the call that. I think is right. But you know, there was there was an opportunity here for the Democrats to say, let's win this seat, and it didn't happen. And so instead, and that's everybody's right? You have people who wanna run? So again, it's. Their right to run. And and then then I have to make a decision you either get into knock down drag out with Democrats who again are not the problem right now. They may be the problem soon if they keep going the way they've been going, but they're not the problem now. So it just didn't work out. That's just the way it is. It's all I can tell you it, isn't that? I didn't put in the hard work and the effort I did. And so I I'm sorry. I the people I'm disappointing. And where we go in the future as far as finding candidates who who were just average regular people in the middle. Not ideologues. That's a big challenge for this country. We're gonna have to figure it out grant Wood's former Arizona attorney general announcing right here on KTAR that he will not run for Senate grand. Thank you. Thank you for joining us. We do it for coming. And thank you for being loyal and being true to your word we drain you only. Appreciate that. From you guys. You can argue that you may not like the word. He is honest about it for goodness sakes. Hey, we've got more on the way right here on Arizona's news station KTAR..

"We believe in what we're understanding is we are about just less than one hour away from the swearing in ceremony. We know from governor Ducey when he appointed Martha mcsally to the seat vacated by Senator Kyle previously. Vacated by Senator McCain step that. Congresswoman gosh, the terms Senator electric cinema will be sworn in. I making her the first female Senator immediately followed by. Congresswoman Senator like MC Sally being sworn in making her the second female Senator. But both of them will be sworn in roughly ten AM Phoenix time. Well, I don't think you would call MC Sally Senator elect Ben let me clarify two point Senator appointee. Or whatever the analogy is right. Let me clarify because she McCain's term would have ended in twenty twenty two crash. She gets to serve until twenty twenty and twenty twenty there will be a special election where should she win that election? She could serve until twenty twenty two. Another two years mealy run again. So yeah. So you could say that it's a good thing to get appointed to Senator McCain seat. But the flipside is you basically have to run for that seat. Two more times to get to a full Senator term of six years. So it it's basically what she had been done in the past the congresswoman where you have to run every two years. But the question is, and I think one of the the the question marks. You know, you can look at it from a national perspective. What's going to change the Democrats take control of the house today? How will that the balance of power sharing power working there? But how? And who are are senators going to grow into our two new freshmen senators to females who ran against each other. From different political parties, certainly have some differing views. I assume they agree on some things as well. But I think one of the frustrating things for me. And I would I'm not saying I paid attention to it more than most people, but I kind of had to right? I can't fully tell you everything cinema and MC Sally your foreign against because the campaign. I think I can acknowledge was not indicative of who they really were do, you know, what I'm saying? When you would you run for Senate, but whether it be the negative attack ads or the puff pieces that you run in favor of yourself. Who are they really because it takes some time to understand who they are all uses an example, it took time for a lot of people understand who Senator flake was for him to find his voice. The Senate Senator McCain didn't show up as a brash maverick on day one it it takes time for you to understand. Okay. What kind of a Senator they going to be are they going to be very vociferous. Are they going to be outspoken or are they going to be one of these these people that I'm sure you hear it all the time. I hear the Senator from somewhere I go. That's a Senator. Right. What am I gonna Looper? Where's he from the Hecker? Well, the thing is is that there are some senators who stand out like, oh, I don't know Mitch McConnell stands out. Marco Rubio stands out because he was from Florida. A and B he ran for president. Remember when they had seventy running for president, you kind of get to know them. But I think for Senator cinema. I think she's going to be more of the same. The big question will be what Martha mcsally will do. Because what kind of she lost in a red state to a centrist democrat because that is what Kirsten cinema is out of cheap voted sixty percent of the time with bills that Trump side. I I made the point earlier that if Kirstin cinema was running for Senate in Vermont New Hampshire she would run as a Republican. She is not their version of a democratic that is not a democrat. Now, she is decidedly too far to the right for them. So we all grade on a curve you look at the different states and kind of the bay Cup of it like a blue dog. She's kind of like that blue dot talk about that used to be the term they use for like Gary Condit that was the term they use because he was that conservative. Democrat those Democrats who kinda liked Reagan, but didn't become Republicans. But is changing and is the Senate so fundamentally changed or is congress so fundamentally changed that somebody like Kirsten cinema won't be able to fit in. I don't know there are there are senators who stand out, and there's freshmen senators who stand out. But they stand out for maybe not always the right reasons. Let me throw this out there. Cory booker. Cory booker. Democrat from New Jersey. You got the former mayor of Newark. Yes. Yeah. Right. Not not the loveliest town to look. No. But but he stands out for being. Outspoken for being a huge Trump critic you see what I'm saying? Well, he's he's the liberal nice guy. But that's his brain. He's on Twitter. And he's you know, and he's like he's run into buildings and save citizens who were has. So by question is and what I I admit, I'm not sure what will cinema and mix Sally's brand be what will their image be not only in the Senate kind of on a national level. But what will it be here in the state of Arizona? I will they more likely reflect I think mcsally might have to change because again, she lost to cinema. But she's still got a seat. Like, she got a participation trophy. You don't get all six years, but she get too. So Don tweeted me, by the way, at Bruce St James said, I disagree a little he says, you know, who they are by now by how they voted cinema is a policy driven independent mix. Sally is with Trump. And I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. And that's not me trying to defend or attack one of them. Kirstin cinema has evolved over time time in in the house, she has evolved from the person who I got elected to the house to the person that ran for Senate. I'm not I'm not accusing her of not being genuine. I'm not one hundred percent sure like where where water will find its level with her. And the thing about MC is mix. Sally was not Colt forty five build a wall locker up until she ran for Senate. And then after she lost her Senate race, she seemed and they did a post mortem internally. We're basically one of the reasons they decided she had lost looking at voters was she was too closely aligned to Trump. So I think Mick Sally knows if she's going to lock her up build the wall candidate she could lose again in two thousand twenty she can lose this thing all over again, if the antibeach are she seen as being too closely aligned to Trump. That's what cost. Her this last election, and that's the risk for her. If she runs against former attorney, General, Grant woods or former or is it marker Scott Kelly. Mark Mark Kelly. They're twins my confusion, if one of them runs those are strong names to run against. So it's not like she's running up against the businessman that nobody's heard of these are people who know how policy works. These are people who are in the trenches and talking to people and could raise a whole lot of money, and she'd have to raise a bunch of money to we regardless of money because this will be a hot Senate seat and keep in mind that they've got two years to govern. And again to show us who they are by their votes by their stances by their policy. Both cinema and MC Sally. But the big difference is MC Sally's immediately running for reelection kissing cinema has six years to worry about another election issue. I'm saying. That gives you a little wiggle room. Because. So okay. So she has to I have to do math. So in twenty twenty four when cinema has to run for reelection. If you choose to consume. I don't think a lot of people would go remember how she wasn't January of two thousand eighteen like that's not what people are gonna remember. Sally doesn't have that. Luxury. People are gonna go. Well, here's exactly the type of Senator you were for the last two years that vote that's going to happen on the budget, for example wall that's gonna affect. Cinema cinema. Nope. Six years from now. We'll people remember that government the great government shutdown of two thousand eighteen thousand nineteen my guess is that won't be what they're voting on regardless of how you feel about that won't be the thing. It may be one of the key things when it comes to MC Sally. And I think MC Sally has again the much finer line to walk for a variety of reasons. One of them being is how pro slash anti-trump. Does she need to be where is that balance for her to appeal to a large enough group of people in the state of Arizona to get elected? Well, that was a genius of cinemas campaign because from the beginning it looked like I mean, she said the word independent and all those did you notice that never democrat. He just said in. Well, she talked about how. Yeah. That's what Arizona's like they like a maverick like Democrats. They mourn the loss of John McCain, which they should have. Because there was one thing. He was he would get on the floor of congress, and you can look at it and YouTube and make fun of his own his own party. He was he was chastised. They were alone the more door. I mean, he made a Lord of the rings reference at which you got a of differences is entering McCain had some tenure and seniority that the senators would sit there and take it from him. Neither mic Sally, nor cinema are going to be able to get up there and give that speech and have any of the other senators care about it. The lead brought to you by Berge Ford off the US sixty and Mesa drive online at bergeford dot com. So because of the great government shutdown of two thousand eighteen thousand nine hundred some employees won't be getting paychecks for quite a while. As a matter of fact, some of them may not get paid. If it ended today till January twenty fifth could you go a month without a paycheck? Could you do that? We're going to talk about some maybe unique challenges that they're having. That's coming up after Bob McClay checks in with our top stories..
