Monday Night Football (MM #3904)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Back in the 1970s, when ABC created Monday Night Football, with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith and Frank Gifford, it was all the rage it was revolutionary. It changed the game of professional football. I talked a couple of months ago where I thought the game of well, not just professional football, but sports broadcasting in general changed thanks to the new mega cast that ran most Mondays on ESPN2. That's Peyton Manning and his brother Eli, basically, while hosting a party, I guess you'd say, with guests popping in and out and kind of talking about the game, we're watching the game, but it's not really the play by play, and I kind of don't know what to do with myself tonight because they're not on. They're not on every game this season. They're not hosting every game, but I found that I watch more Monday Night Football now than I ever have in my entire life. And that includes years where I had to go host Monday Night Football parties when it worked in radio. It's changed the way I watch sports. And again, I've watched more Monday Night Football this year than I have in well forever. I think it's going to change a lot of things. It'd be interesting for me to see NASCAR kind of try the same thing.

Get to Know Os Guinness, Author of 'The Magna Carta of Humanity'

"Who is us? Where has he where was he born and what has he been doing most of his life? Well, I'm the great great, great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the original brewer, and very proud of our family heritage and the integrity and generosity of the firm down the centuries. My own branch of the family, my grandfather, was one of the first western doctors in China, actually he survived the box arrives, and he went into the Forbidden City and treated the Empress dowager and the last emperor in the early part of the 20th century. My parents were born in China, and importantly for this book, I was a 7 year old in the Chinese revolution. So I remember the day. You have memory? You have memories? Absolutely. And it's important to this book because I remember the day when my dad said to me son, we're in trouble. Chiang Kai-shek has abandoned the city. We were in the capital, and the Red Army's coming in. And I remember the reign of terror began, and I was there for two years under that, and my parents were kept another two years on the house arrest. But the important was many years later I was at Oxford, and the graduate student, and had general one night with Isaiah Berlin. In other great places of freedom, Jewish. And we discovered he'd been a 7 year old in the Russian Revolution. And I was a 7 year old in the Chinese revolution the two big communist ones of the last century, so he compared notes thank God the English speaking people who stood up against totalitarianism, but in the mid 70s, when I was with him, it would have been unthinkable. That America would be tempted by anything like a radical socialism, let alone a cultural Marxism. And yet, that's where we are

"The event would get on the public address system and as a sort of alarm to welcome people to the day and maybe get them up he would would ultimately yodel us. Quite outta yodeler. again. I mean i'm no aficionado of yodeling. But it seemed to me like he was doing pretty good job at it at he started out with And by the time. I i heard it. He had been doing it for years and years and years and so by then what the somewhere along the line. He kind of evolved this routine where they play a little They they play a little audio of a you hear turbine engine spinning up that wining northerner and spinning up and just at the point where the durban engine is about ready to fire. Fire the jet. It suddenly sputters cops in new year like this. This rotary rickety engine. Sound all right as if it was like a old biplane or something like that. At which point the yodeler guy comes in live and starts doing a little. He does a little life affirmation. You know here we are today and it's a beautiful at oshkosh and we're going to do the thing here you know and you guys that for a couple of minutes and then he kinda then segues straight in it to doing his yolo. I can't do it at all now. And then my maybe. My favorite part of the whole thing is that after his yodel for about. I don't know what thirty forty five seconds you know. He'll wrap it up and just kind of what does he say he says. He says. let's go get him. I love the over. I used to go down before he passed because he passed away about recording. Yeah now this recording. So i used to go down there in the morning because you watch you do it on the announcer stand. I mean again. I don't know where where he did it all the years that he did it because he did it for a long time. But by the time i arrived he was dunk. Doing it from the announcer stand and And it'd be the only one there like he'd he'd be up on the announces dan and he might have one or two friends up there with him And then if we were lucky there was me and maybe one or two other attendees and we're standing down on the grass in front of the announcer stand waiting for seven o'clock so that we can watch the and it. Was it folks doing this as much torment jim as anything really is. Let me finish the thought that the guy in addition to all the audio excitement of this is that he was so exuberant he was up there while he was yodeling. And doing this. let's go get. He's like dancing around and waving his arms. He had this joy of life. That was just awesome. I like the odor. And i don't mind it all. They played at seven o'clock in the morning so there. And here's the counterpoint. No here's the counterpoint. The days here at oshkosh or long. It's hot. There's a lot to see a lot to do and in the evenings here in our campground area where all of our friends. There's a lot going on a lot of friends to see in. The nights are long and you want to rest up for another long day and and it's seven o'clock in the morning they put this on and he's just roll over in your sleeping bag and you go. Oh no at seven o'clock in the morning the sun has been up here for an hour. I don't care. And i think before you press record someone in this room said something along the lines of you just have to get used to being at oshkosh and going home sleep deprived. Someone said that because of that yoed all right moving on but at least they know what we're talking about. See what else we had a We're in a part of the campground called camp bacon. And if you'd like to know where we've been camping you can actually google camp bacon. It's marked on the google maps and last night our senior. They know where to come and find us. Now we're in trouble but we can move camp bacon. I have as a matter of fact but yes We had a big party here in camp. Bacon of podcasters lot of media. Folks all of our friends Was a lovely lovely evening. It was a great party. And and it's it's to be noted that ours is not unusual. There are camping groups all over camp solar that are holding these kinds of parties. Some you know we do one. We we socialize. We get around the fire every night but we do one of the big things. A year on there are groups that do one of these almost every night There's a lot of these big group dinners. People are having a really good time here every year. All week long absolutely. And they don't have all they have is a prototype but according to the news they have a flying prototype in and i don't understand why they didn't bring that here and show it off but they didn't They all kinds of pictures of it. And i had a chat with a guy there and we were talking about the program and they seem to be still doing good things but from a marketing set as a former marketing guy. I was disappointed in what they did. They i think they squandered the opportunity of being at at air venture by not really really showing themselves off. I don't know maybe you know. Maybe i should ask them. What was your thinking on that but anyways that was disappointing but i did learn a little bit about the program and they're making progress and they're trying to get to the point where they they're now building a new aircraft that is a follow on from what they learn on their prototype and I think he said they're hoping that that will fly Later this year or after the first of the year in twenty twenty two and You know they're they're fantasy dream and he acknowledged that this is a fantasy dream is that there might be Salable airplanes by the end of twenty two or twenty three so that's by aerospace One of a handful of of electric airplane projects and programs. Which i personally believe is the future. I ran into Ea director of communication dictum pinski Who has always been very very kind to us as a podcast. And of course jevon. David worked with him for years as as working journalists and we chatted for a few minutes I i asked him a few questions. for for this Daily episode. and let's listen right now to what his take on the fly in is at this point. How's the week going. I mean where it's early but But how how do you feel about it this year. It's such a joy just to be pack that that's the biggest thing check it. It's missing everybody last year online simply not the same as being here experiencing oshkosh together like you in the camp ground and everything else. That's a special part of but early on really fast star. Don jack pelton yesterday said typically we part five thousand aircraft before the event starts the weekend before this year we parked seventy nine hundred. So it gives you some idea of the growth and people just pent up wanting to get out here and that boozy azam is evident in the people here. It's evident throughout the community. And we're hoping for big week all because of that Yeah we saw that in camp schoeller as well We arrived at our normal on our normal date to find that we had to be much further out because it was very crowded so it was. You know we keep kidding. We'll have to cut some more alfalfa and get everybody in here. Well you have as a matter of fact. Did you expand the so-called south forty. We did the south forty. We worked with the airport. Wittman regional airport to obtain that land setup aircraft camping down there and it's paid off this year really jack pelton. It said one of his goals was to say no plane turned away from oshkosh. Want to be here and lots participate and be part of this culture. We welcome now. How do we fit everybody in. And that's a challenge but Working with the airport we've developed that area all the way to the southern edge of the airport grounds and that's really come in handy zero. Some interesting expansions to the note them this year particularly the arrival from ripping fisk any word yet on how that worked out so far. It's worked out very well. You know we heard one person can cut in line. Got admonished by the controllers. But what that does. It's almost like a series of retention ponds as one fills up overflows into the next one next one so therefore you don't cause flooding in one and it's worked very well. I know we've had some weather issues and things. That have held up for instance. I are arrivals or military arrivals and hold people. On sunday we easily were able to transition to green lake puck away lake even back to the endeavour bridge which first of all credit to faa from working that through in seconds of the pilots. Because they listen they said great. We can be here we can hold. It's not just a malay over rippin and makes things much safer here. We saw some dramatic. Ads images of the congo line. Going all the way out in fact at one point i saw it curving south down the highway there from From that first point. Yeah it just gives you an idea of how many people actually wanted to really. And that's been the fun watching last weekend as everybody arrived. Just again a joy and you know watching the green dot and the orange dot the yellow dot all an action at the same time and so those are the kind of things that we look forward to and i think everyone's been looking forward to for two years anything else. You want to get the word out about you know. I think you know everybody stay safe. Some patients This year you know there are some things. If you kobe protocols that we have in place You know a few changes with transportation internally some auto parking at those are the kind of things that okay things are going to be a little bit different but the oshkosh appealing will be the same and it's great to have yourself and everybody else backyard. That's great thank you so thank you dick. I literally tackled him as he was walking down a car and he was very very friendly. I'm sure he's busy guy but he spent a few minutes talking with me. And i thank him for that. What else. oh. I know the next thing and so the final thing. Big thing for me to this day was that i got together and had dinner with some of my former Air venture today colleagues and that's always a thrill I had made some great friendships. I'm jefferson davor certainly two examples but there were others and We worked together for for over a decade At on i worked on the newspaper for over a decade. I worked with these people and i consider them friends and I it. I regret not seeing the more often during air venture week so we always try to get together and we did last night we were gonna go to the night air show But already and it would have been going on right now except that mid afternoon. They decided to cancel the night air. Show because of this. Big storm threat so Instead of going tonight airshow together we went back and found a brew pub here in oshkosh and got together and chatted for awhile and just had a great visit. It's just really fun. These are wonderful people and Barb and dan and fred and phil is You know are are great friends. And i enjoyed sitting with them. That was a lot of fun. Went to a place called greens poor house. Poor like in peo- you Nice little rupa. I'd never been there before. It's in the granary building. If you know oshkosh so I recommend it. Give it a try when you're here anyways. Well i guess that's about it for today. We're all getting hunker down here..

"Who sat up all night. Long watching the weather. Send out those text messages. I who's close to that. It's actually a national weather service person. they are here at the show with an exhibit and apparently some combination of them. Pay attention to whether all night long and as needed they send out these alerts and so they're the ones that are actually sending those texts They're kind of nice in handy Fortunately it although it rained hard a couple of times during the night it wasn't anything catastrophic like we've had sometimes in the past the rain though Did continue into the morning and so for the first couple of hours of the day. We spent the time Sitting underneath one of the big canopies here in camp bacon and drinking coffee and just chatting Round mid morning. I hiked down onto the air show grounds to meet up with phil One of the ea today alumni and visited with him for a while. That was really nice. Had a really. Nice talk with phil We spent about an hour drinking coffee and comparing old memories praising friends and criticizing enemies It was a lot of fun It was good to feel again. I obviously haven't seen him in two years and We usually work side by side in the newspaper office. And and since leaving the newspaper we see each other once or twice a week so it was great to get together with him. Back to camp bacon later in the morning Spent a little bit more time sitting with The denizens of cam bacon just chatting by now. The weather had changed dramatically. It was pretty pretty remarkable. While i was sitting with phil It went from totally overcast to severe clear and the sun out So i guess it's like he played new england in that regard. If you don't like the weather at oshkosh twenty-one just wait a minute Spent some time talking. And i'll sat down in a quiet corner with my laptop and did little bit of work And then after lunch in the early afternoon. I headed back onto the grounds to meet up with charlie becker. We've had charlie beck around the podcast. A bunch of times over the years and He's a really good friend of the podcast. And and a really nice guy The epitome of what is all about I met him at the home. Builder's headquarters we were gonna talk and we were going to visit and then record some stuff for the daily He had some errands to do so tagged along with him on a golf cart And we weren't rolling around the grounds And because he's a good guy because he's wearing a shirt stop and chat with people and kind of share the the the good spirits of of people. It was fun to do it. We let's see. Where do we go. We Went drove out to home built camping after that we had to go over to the museum then we had to swing by the chapel at pioneer airport And then we ended up back at hangar. See By the time we got the hanger seaweed accumulated some pedestrians that we offered a ride to charlie auburn right to So we gave them a lift and drop them off at at hangar. See and then. We finally found a patrick shade to sit and talk for a little while You'll hear that conversation with charlie in just a few seconds by the way if you ever have a chance to get a cart ride in these situation do it if only because the breeze that you get in the cart is just magnificent and especially after. You've been walking around in the heat and humid tuesday. Evening is a big deal and campaign. Because it's the night that leslie along with her husband grant and all their helpers make jambalaya feast that can't be beat it's just magnificent and draws a big crowd not only can't bacon people but friends from around camp shoulder and around the grounds. This year's menu was pretty typical. We had she had. She made two big pots of jambalaya which is just spectacular with sausage and and The shrimp in there he goes chicken in there. A lot of rice and spices and it was just terrific was awesome For those who are disinclined to eat the jambalaya. She also makes a big pot of vegetarian. Chili which. I didn't try. But i understand to be very very excellent They have a sort of buffet of all sorts of spicy condiments. That you can add to this We also had some salads chips and a whole bunch of desserts. If you had pies cookies muffins or you name it. All kinds of desserts so The jambalaya feast campaign is always great and leslie routine really outdid themselves. This year Big crowd we had must have had. I didn't count ads. But just thinking about it. Certainly fifty maybe. As many as seventy people it was a big crowd was quite a thing earlier in the day. I mentioned how i met with. Charlie becker Charlie is a long time. Good friend of this podcast he's Was one of the two people instrumental indie legendary episode two hundred Beer bus thing which spawned the tie-down party and He's just been a friend to ours. Giving us advice giving us support helping us with resources. a terrific friend he's also a incredible asset ee Where he wears a lot of different hats and does a lot of great things. As i mentioned earlier he truly is the epitome. What year is all about if you asked me We spoke for a few minutes about some of the things that are going on Charlie by the way is the director for chapters and homebuilding. Ea and here's that conversation. Hi hey doing. I'm no an awesome. There what is what are they saying. They're saying the wait is over. Yes that's kind of our tagline. the wait is over. Huddersfield to be back is wonderful You know. I felt extremely cheated last year by not having the fly in i mean. I live in wisconsin to work today. Aa and a big part of of what i get out of working. Eda is the convention the flying. And without that. I i was just like wow. I live on wisconsin. I get a bunch of winter and no flying. that's the worst of both worlds. Then yeah i get it. I get it Wondering around is sort of a mostly an attendee. It seems like it's big this year. What what's it from your perspective. But i don't have anything official. I do know. The last thing i heard was on friday night we were at two hundred. Ninety home builds On the field versus to thirty three and twenty nineteen and twenty nineteen was an all time high. As well. And i just saw a graph. I didn't actually see the numbers where home built. Camping is off tremendously What's going on in the home built world these days or lots of stuff going on now. I haven't heard of any announcements yet. But we've just got some great aircraft on display. You know two years ago is the first time where we relocated the home kit manufacturers to kind of between the flight line the workshops and the forums and that's turned out really good. We added the whole milton reviews stand. That's been great edition so it's really happening place these days How about you personally hundred cub doing good. I ended up buying a wing kit from javale. Ron got the flaps and ailerons bill. And i'm just now finishing the left wing every time i talked to someone. Whose whole building i. It's like you don't ask them when it's going to be done but when's it going to be doing that. You know i i would like to get it done. I mean it's not like this is supposed to be a forever project You know but i already know all start another one that i get this one. So there's no real hurry to get it done. Another piece of your turf is chapters. What's going on in chapters these days. Lots lots going on the world chapters. Obviously they're all starting to bust out of the the fog so to speak. You know we're finally getting some young eagles flowing again. I mean last year as you could imagine was a crushing year for both chapters and young eagles and and now they're largely starting to you. Know fundamentally chapter as a group of local aviators that you know people that love aviation and you know yes we. There's a lot of chapters and my my chapter included that we did you know zoom gotomeeting. That kind of style. What y'all it's just it's just not that satisfied and chapters. Are there to to actually help each other. Interact with each other support each other Do the good things for the local aviation community and that was really hard to do last year but this year everything is looking out. We're flying young yields again back. We're offering double young yield credits for june. July and august is a little bit of an incentive to help them get going again. I talked to a lot of people who are. Ea members but not involved with chapters and i urge them to become. I've been off and on involved in are currently involved in chapter. But i've been involved with regular chapter of the noble vintage chapter and it's great. I love it. And i point people in that direction but if if an e members not involve a chapters why would.

"A long way for just a couple of days which is about all the time i would. I would really have spent so. I'm gonna sit this one out. Y'all can i will live vicariously through. You've you folks if you go and and all of our listeners and everybody else who i would be in contact with their i'll be certainly looking at things online at cetera et cetera. At the same time. I'm i'm still a little of Of being in large crowds these days. I i see for example Today that Cnn is announcing United states is now averaging more than fifteen thousand new coruna of a coronavirus cases per day and there are a lot of reasons for that These sorts of things I've been vaccinated. And i'm confident in the in the vaccination but there's a lot of unknown Things going on. I just want to try to be as careful as i can. And would certainly you know. I certainly encourage our listeners to be as careful as you can. I'm not going to condemn Certain activities i might condemns mothers but The it is what it is in in as has been said so many times. We all have to make our own personal decision. That's one of mine. Yeah so it's going to be a weird air venture as far as you cap is concerned And whatever happens happens but Yeah for those of you. Who are planning on attending Era venture this year. A couple of things that you should be aware of. I think anyways So we always We always sing the sing the song of read the note him. And that's as true as it ever is You need one thing. You need to be on the lookout on. The note of this year is that they've made some interesting not changes so much as extensions to the to the The f. rival procedure The the legendary rippin fiscal rival has become. I was going to look this up because it's so it used to be that you arrived at all at a location called rippin And then you and then you flew rippin to fit town called fiske where the controllers were located the remote controllers And then from there. You followed railroad tracks into Wittman field this year. They've extended that out by two further out. Reporting points are arrival points that i mental look up their names. But i've got it right here actually before ripping now you have three reporting points in these are in order from west to east endeavour bridge which has its own Five letter identifier. An intersection identify puck away. Like i'm i. That's a p puck away. Lake and green lake. are Landmarks Easy to see each to identify Locations on the way from west to east right who approach rippin There are some additional. There's additional material on these fixes after rippin the As nearly can tell without a detailed comparison after ripping their your rivals pretty much as it was Follow the tracks to fisk. Follow the tracks from fisk to Your right to just west of the airport. And then you know depending on what you've been how the and depending on which operations in use at at oshkosh land. Yeah it sounds like at least in part. The reason they did this was because in the few most recent years nineteen eighty two in in eighteen and so forth It occasionally got a bit chaotic out. There not only with just a normal flow arriving traffic but when they needed to go into the whole procedure Every now and then when they have to slow down or stop arrivals at the airport they'll have people hold in the past that it was just one leak out there that they would hold around and a apparently i heard stories about how crazy out there people trying to a lot of airplanes holding around the lake and so it seems like what the and if you don't don't do this on the basis of my description everyone read this note carefully Because there are apparently multiple different hold situations And hold Holds actual tracks to hold on around And so forth. And i think i read that that everyone doesn't need to start at endeavor I think it has to do with density. And and and the i think the the the ats or something Will tell you where. Which is the current first arrival point or something like read the note them. It's all in there. Don't take it on seemingly much more detailed section if not new section about holding fisk. Yes yeah because there were some scary situations apparently in recent years. It's been couple of three years now. But there is that pretty much infamous screenshot. Someone took of their traffic display on an ipad and it was just wall to wall. zoomed out a lot but it was just wall to wall aircraft At at fisk at rupp although recorded cetera. That was i never took. I know that when your image you're talking about it's cool image But i never took that image to be a new instance. A new case with the reason that image will even existed. I submit the traffic has always been that crowded out there. The difference is the difference. Is that in the old days. Everyone would just turn off their Turn off your transponder. That was the rule you were supposed to turn off your transponder. And as a result there was just no way of getting that kind of data all right but now with a dsp. Everybody's being tracked much more in much more detail and so that was an eighty s. Be a readout that suddenly showed us very graphically. i'll many targets are out there And but yeah so they just wanted to clean up and and and give themselves more options and more real estate for doing the holds and doing the space the the spacing and whatnot so for all you listening at home and gentle reminder. You're not supposed to turn off your dsp. It's in the rack exactly right. And that's why we suddenly had that data because because so anyways all right read the note them become the not become the note. Yes be one. There's a good video online. We talk about that. yeah. I noticed that. Ea posted videos of what it looks like Along that route Including the new checkpoints. Yeah some good stuff out there take all that stuff you know pre pre brief yourself in a big way because it can be done safely. It's good it's good You know plan but it involves pre-planning and concentration pay attention So yeah. I've completely lost the window. The has the list on it here. it is here. what's next year was anything else. I wanted to talk about Do you wanna talk about this or venture a fuel deal. That's happening. what global air trying to find it. Oh yeah there we go denbigh. Open that one outfit called global air dot com air venture f. b. o. Specials page returns in twenty twenty one and this is filled with tips on.

"Did you guys see this story about tucson and the and the the the alleged drone that that circle the military base and the you know what i'm talking about here now i haven't seen this. I think i'm thinking about the right store here. Have any of you heard this thing. It was here. Ditsy this story. So this is from our one of our all time favorite aviation publications the website the derive and their section the war zone which okay on guard already here but new details emerge on the quote highly modified drone in that outran police helicopters over tucson so I it's kind of a long star here. maybe i can. I'll try and summarize it. Basically a few witnesses who appear to be kind of plausible witnesses observed a drone flying in the air around tucson. They observed it flying near the big The big Tucson international and also davis davis-montham the airports air force base. I guess and And then when the When the authorities helicopters tried to To to chase it down It apparently zoomed. All right. went apparently went very fast and very high and this is where i get started to get by being implausible because the thing talks my My computer's digging the ignore that they report it disappearing in the distance at fourteen thousand feet disappearing into the clouds. And how would how would never mind. Yeah no. I think. I know where you're going jim and that was exactly my question to all right if all the ours is visually observing it. They were able to determine that it was at fourteen thousand feet and abby damned big to be seen at fourteen thousand now taste by two police helicopters rare bird now that would get some credibility to the altitude but the helicopters claim to be much lower like fifteen hundred feet or something like that. They very hard to catch it. Well i yeah. I don't know if they were not but Yeah the whole is. I don't know you know it's like it doesn't seem to be totally crackpots reporting this on the other hand it's like crazy story here early This whole you. Ufo are not identified aerial phenomenon Thing is getting way out of hand. I yeah that's what i was. Compare i was chatting with someone online about this. And that's what. I compared it to all these ufo. Oh stories that we've been hearing lately but but the these these these witness eye witnesses claimed to have clearly observed to be a quad copter. These that's what the story describes it as a quad quad copter describe describes a size where the size go said yup. Yeah i'm sorry. David you've got stepped on go ahead. Yeah that's all right. Go ahead amy. Repeat all i was saying is they had a really clear look at it because it was a near midair and then the police helicopter turned around and chased it. Yeah and then they quote. The story here quotes A online forum called jet careers dot com and it. It quotes an individual that they don't really have any credentials for but there's there's kind of a long description of the whole thing which is talking about how the helicopters you know came near and gave chase and it was observed circling the military base and then and then let's see now it's Proceeded to high speed and climbing with the helicopter and another law enforcement helicopter in trail the copter. And by i think by copter. They mean me. Think no i believe by copter. They mean the the ufo here The road the drone copter began to climb and flew out of the t. us tucson area about fifty miles to the north west of town into the middle of nowhere desert out by them by by the mind. West of cave q. Was last seen climbing through. Fourteen thousand feet into the undercast where it disappeared I also commented about a fourteen thousand foot under cast. I don't know if that's is a really. He's got a proper terminology. Would there be an under gassed at fourteen. Under popping above four thousand feet. Yeah that could be called an under cast of this happened. I disagree with the jeb. Some reasonably dare the belto six be or whatever it is that local authorities were flying. I don't think as the climb rate. I don't think it has fill up. I don't think it has the service ceiling. I don't think that the story suggests that the helicopters kept up with it and that's my other point though if they didn't okay so the the local area had fourteen thousand foot ceilings. But that's not typically going to be reported except maybe by a military base Anything above twelve is probably going to be reported by civilian observing of observation facility nitpicking. But the fourteen thousand foot value is a figment of imagination. Yeah i'd believe fourteen hundred. And i wondered if it was typo exactly. Yeah so it says the quad copter was approximately five feet long by about three feet wide with a single green. Frat flashing led light in an elsewhere saying it was not battery powered. They didn't think it was battery powered because performance. How do you squeeze an engine and transmission for him and fuel tanks for four rotors into a five foot. Long by three foot wide craft down under estimate the power of nudey that i believe they probably can do and it's really may not be fueled by something that we're thinking of like jet fuel. It might be hydrogen. Fueled with hydrogen fuel cell. Which is where this all starts to spin. Wildly could be alcohol fuel. Alcohol fueled.

"Is Reuters. . Web Story here US EPA proposing I ever airplane emission standards. . This is a story that's dated July twenty seconds. So . just about a month ago <hes>. . I WanNa, , say David with us on the list who did put this this <hes> David wearing? Louis. ? . Do either of you know more about this. . So apparently, , the <hes> US EPA has decided that needs to get serious about getting consistent with some I. . <hes> emission standards and. . <hes> because these foreign countries might stop letting American planes in land, , there may stop letting. . Yeah. . So. . I don't know is this a big deal or is this <hes>? ? Does this apply to g? ? A <hes>. . Yes. . Yes it does. . Okay. . My understanding is that it applies to not in-service aircraft. . Future designs right and that's the other thing. . The does say that here in the story, , it's which had which like you know ten years from now, , it will have applied to six airplanes I got the job. . Let's see, , and that's the hook here for not having the <hes> the aircraft manufacturers GPA community and others come out of the woodwork on this because EPA is long lusted after the. . Ability to enforce emission regulations on on general aviation particularly the <hes> environmentalists out in. . Oregon Washington State California. . I mean it was part of the big fight over Santa Monica Airport. . Airplanes burnin leaded fuel. . Yeah. That's . what I was. . GonNa say it's leaded fuel that we burn and. . These standards go deeper than atvs also been noise <hes> concerns <hes>. . <hes> say the Grand Canyon Yep. . Yeah I'm not sure if I get the connection, , the Grand Canyon noise pollution as annoys airplanes. . Okay. . Yeah Yeah. . <hes>. . Okay. . So I guess that brings you back my first question here this story about <hes> EPA starting to enforce some regulations or greetings and regulations. . Is this a deal for us or is this like like a just like we just said it's new airplanes only. . So as long as you're flying an airplane that wasn't designed like ask her today. . Know I. . I'm not sure I haven't looked at this. . And I could probably click the link that they put up here. . <hes>. . A lot of this is going to apply. . To <hes> TURBAN, , aircraft. . <hes> <hes>. . Including business jets but. . It's not clear. . That they will apply. . For you. . Should. . Jabs find. . Or whatever you like. . David while we're while he's gone so. . Epa I mean is this <hes>? ? What do you think? ? Well? ? First off, let's , give it some perspective here <hes>. . And according to this piece <hes> aircraft account for twelve percent of all transportation greenhouse gas emissions. . And three percent of total us such US emissions. . They're the largest source of transportation related greenhouse gas emissions not subject to standards. . So what they WANNA do here is apply these. . Standards that they've proposed. . To new type designs as of January twenty twenty. . And in production airplanes or twenty or twenty, , twenty, one, , , twenty, , twenty. . Okay. . Thank you and in production airplanes or those with amended Type Certificate starting in Twenty Twenty eight. . They would not apply to airplanes currently in use that's what it says, , and then that's a little bit confusing for me because. . If it was built in January in delivering put into service in February it's obviously in us, , but they say that's when they want the effective date to start on this or so. . Now, , I'm not completely clear here we're the lines being drawn. . But The. . Standards are fairly sweeping. . I mean everything from noise to <hes> to nitrous oxide, , carbon monoxide, , and so forth <hes>. . But. . It was an adventure -ality that this was going to be a fight at some point. . I mean, , yeah, , I mean on one level it's. . It's only right. . It's just I. . Don't know I'm protective in the area because we don't have a lot of good options for the leaded fuel but. . Otherwise. . You know we got to fix problems.

"Is this is a little bit of a serious example of things are could go wrong with <hes> with pay per view air traffic control. You guys know what I'm talking about here. So apparently, apparently the. So I'm going to I'm going to summarize a story, and then you're going to say no, that's not it is at all. My summary is in Canada where they have sort of a user fees based air. Traffic Control System. The pandemic and the resulting reduction in aircraft traffic has caused that entity to Kinda start losing money, and so there what increasing fees or something like that is that what's happening? David desma. This is your story to win. That's what they're working on. Yeah, and there's a these are permanent increases or just some sort of you know a one time. Surcharge kind of thing. While a cash impact from the from from this. PROMPTING THEM TO PROPOSE NAP Canada proposed a twenty nine point five percent increase in base rates. That would be deferred. They say over a five year period exactly how that Perot would work I'm sorry, deferred or ramp up. Deferred I. think that's what I think. That's what they're talking about is phasing it in over by using it in. Yeah, okay are. But two hundred and forty two million would allow Nath Canada to meet the minimum revenue level, and must have under its existing debt structure. To seek additional debt financing, and here we go, there's a whole problem with a fee for service air traffic control system. That's A. We were told Oh. Be Predictable. Will be able to invest when we want to. It'll bring money in, and we'll be able to upgrade equipment without going through the big government followed a raw, and you get a downturn like this and we need thirty percent more just to keep the doors open. and to preserve our finance obligations intact and. We don't have that problem here. No! We don't have that problem here because. It's a government service. Yeah, the government funds it and money is there whether traffic is up or down? Yes. I agree that's I think that's a very reasonable way to do it given that it's a public service, and it's a community value and whatnot, but let's go back to Kennedy here for a second so although I knew they had I'm sorry. Save facetiously calling it pay per view, but user user fees. What does it actually cost? Do you know? And how does it even work for example if I get in my one seventy two? If I were based in Canada and I got into one seventy two, and went flying for one hundred dollar hamburger, a couple of hours away from my home base, and then flew back. Would I get a bill from air traffic control for that flight? I believe so beliefs I and ballpark. WHAT WOULD THAT BILL BE? How much would it cost? Dan I can't tell you ten bucks or one hundred bucks I. I mean I flew into. London Ontario. The diamond aircraft factory years ago, the Debonair uh-huh and I believe I got a bill for like twenty five dollars, and that was for the up and back. Okay and that was a while ago, that was. Nine thousand nine. Thousand Twenty twenty years ago okay. So I don't know. Yeah, you know what. <hes>. What the current! Bill would be for that operation? But it ain't gonNA be free yeah. This is with the flip side of which is is not free in using scare quotes in us. No we pay taxes. We buy fuel taxes. Miraculously, have have stayed in effect <hes> for many many years forty plus years. Maybe longer than that <hes> and Is is the covers covers. Is a great way to measure or to build by operation or number of flights because you burn more gas, the more you fly, and you pay more tax. Yeah. No I. Think I guess that seems reasonable. I mean. As you in coming up trying to come up with a way to allocate these expenses. Maybe, he's ads can punch into your. CALCULATORS REAL QUICK NAP Canada last year. Handled three point four million flights. And collected one point four billion in service charges built million versus billion. Four million and one point four billion in charges, wait a minute sounds like a lot per flight. It adds up baby.

"I came across the story in the news In the last couple of days let's this is dated April seventeen a month ago but that this is the area on all right. The the area on. Which is the in development supersonic business jet that the to write the story about that. Yeah and so. I don't know exactly what the news is here. I think they've kind of reached a milestone. Or something's going. The main reason I flagged this story is that the thing I find interesting about the area on project is that we talked about the area on project in episode episode number. Five all right. I mean it's like that long that this project has Jack Jack Yeah. Rome wasn't built in a day. I guess not all right you know but my other my other question about this they call. They're calling it the. As to now he's happy what happened to the one. That was the initial design that was Produced toward the jet back. Oh Jeannie fifteen years ago that sounds about right since we talked about in about fifteen years ago and since then they rethought the The size the seating in the engine configuration and incorporated those changes into the design. Joey went from. As Arianne supersonic one to Iran supersonic to it's going to be a three engine jet about one hundred and twenty million and they're still taking the same approach that I think could make this. A winner of the airfoil is a natural lamour flow designed by a gentleman named traits Dr Tracy I met him. I N B Aa. They came to and the airfoil design that fuselage design. It's supports supersonic about one point. Six mock with really decent fuel efficiency but also supports point.

"To service as a thriving class delta airport in the fall of twenty twenty and the read the story, and it's kinda kinda plausible. It's okay anything this'll be a huge thing. It's just too huge to be believable just to start out with and then plans call for onfield restaurant. I f e Geo o. and bragging rights of the tallest control tower in North America. And that's where I was going. Okay. Hang on hang on, you know. And so. Anyways. I I'm looking at us going, wait a minute. But now, it just doesn't make sense. Side. Sidebar headline. Yeah. Exclusive Amelia, Earhart found alive and well in Fayette county. And that's how I find. I I went to the homepage. That went to the the aviation daily dot news homepage and looked at the other stories that they are, you know, new Bravo. And it is if you read their about right, and they they play it kind of close to the vest. But if you read their about page, they do say, hey, this is satire, you know, another one from the sidebar another head from the sidebar a PA to award one lucky bastard a million dollar flight training scholarship. Yeah. In their about page. It says this site publishes satire, if you don't have a sense of humor. That's unfortunate. Discrepancy? The experience of acting fact checking gap anyways seems like a fun site. I just I guess I'd recommend I like their opinions, and I'm going to subscribe to their newsletter. Yeah. There was another one here. What was it? There was a there was an Oshkosh FAA. Can't explain how airplanes fly defers to NASA? We're wasn't here. A lot of interesting stuff here. Oh, I know. Yeah. Okay. Cancels twenty nineteen air venture due to ongoing Canadian border crisis. This is I would have a six volunteers to drink excessively. I like that one. Yeah. Investigate this website a little bit more. Yeah. Anyways, aviation daily dot news. Where were we here? I'm sorry that we got distracted here. I got one more quick shoutout. Yeah. Go ahead. Don't be quick. We're trying to make a double episode here. I don't know if it's working or not we'll see time so far so good. I got a tip my hat to the members of the Canadian air traffic controller associate. Yes. Indeed. Yes. Absolutely. This could be an onion story too. I don't know. But go ahead. It's real the cat. No, it's been sitting in my it's anyways energy, you're gonna have to consume when to keep that refrigerator where you could use leave it outside. You know? This is always been a puzzle to me. Yes. This is absolutely true. Chip. All right. We're gonna come back and talk refrigerators in the after show and making refrigerators. Okay. Actually, I know. By the way, a Hodgson family history. I was gonna say that. Now, we won't say we don't wanna save everything for the after show. We'll give everybody this Hodgson family history. We were talking about Marlboro being lookout point before. There was a lookout point Moncton. You mentioned Moncton Canada, which is up sort of north northeast of Maine is where the Hodgson family is from. That's where my grandfather, John. I'm John the third some people don't maybe don't know that Jack. But legally, I'm John the third John senior. My grandfather was born up in the Moncton area. Actually, a little town called Shetty ack, which is a kid. I thought was a cool word because it was like cursing, but Monckton is where the Hudson family is originally from and still is the Hudson family is still up there. My grandfather's, brother. His descendants continued to live up there Moncton. What else? Why stop now? I stopped now. Yeah. Where were we? I don't know. Hang on. We're gonna list go..

"To noise and safety concerns, major medical facilities like San Francisco, General, and you see s f don't have landing pads. This is twenty four teen. There are nearly two dozen other hospital landing locations around the bay area. The city does allow landing Twenty-nine city locations. Wait a minute. It says landing at twenty nine locations in certain emergency situations so seriously. Yeah. Okay. Are you seeing this story? I'm trying to do on the sexual here in see what? I can smell by who's back. I'm looking at clips back to two thousand seven. Man. I had. Yeah. I do that. There is no helicopter operations. So according to this, and again, this is from twenty well the articles twenty fourteen and now I'm looking at the list, Twenty-nine, San Francisco helicopter, emergency medical landing sites. I wonder if that means not that the helicopters having emergency. But that they need to land in order to pick up that might be. What you? Yeah. Yeah. So. So if you're going to have an ethics in need to be airlifted in San Francisco, be sure you crashed in one nine lick. Right. It's referred to this list. Yeah. Exactly. Right. Okay. Okay. Lighter than this doesn't make any sense. But never anyways. I have I had the first customer for this. Bell rotor air taxi thing, right? Okay. I hear the nexus. Yes. The nexus because I hear that the governor of Florida. Needs an airplane. Right. Jeb. You're the Florida man, tell us what's going on here. Florida. So we had his election last last November here, Florida. Yeah. And this guy I'd never really heard of before Ron to Santa's Republican wins the election. He he's gotten off to a shaky start on some ways. He. Apparently, pre set the stage here, I previous governor. Rick, scott. Yeah. Had had his own resources. He was billionaire before he became governor Florida and he had his own airplane. It, you know, at a business jet. Yep. And he used it instead of any state aircraft when he traveled whether state or personal business how he sold off at state chant off he sold off stay jets because he didn't eat that. We didn't need them. Right. So because of course, he's planning to be governor forever because he's going to be governor for life now. Now, he's Senator that so I don't know if that's up grade or not, but yeah, that's a whole nother topic. So now, the new guy arrives and there's no airplane guy arrives. There's no airplane. So he was flying around apparently on a king air. I'm led to believe operated by the Florida -partment of law enforcement, basically state police agency and where airplane come from. It was seized during a drug bust. Now gets better. Okay. Go ahead. Here developed a catechal problems on a Friday a week or so ago and forced an emergency landing of of the airplane in Saint Petersburg..

"What was on the lucky that she was flying? Okay. So this is. The same the same goal, but coming at it from a different angle with a different group of people, which is what got my attention. Yeah. Okay. I would be a great story if they actually found evidence, but I'm starting to you know, it would put a lot of people out of business. They ever. You know, I predict I predict that they will find the remains of Fred Amelia among the wreckage of Malaysia three seventy that's what I think that. Well, I always blamed Amelia for being the guy with him Brel on the grassy knoll in Dallas. Yeah. That could be true too. That would explain a lot as well. Yeah. Yeah. So anyways, I it would be a comfort to somebody. If they found these folks, but. This is one of those stories. Yeah. You're right, Jeb, it's like the JFK conspiracy stuff, it'll there's no evidence, but will never go away. Well, if they solve them missing Amelia's. Story then they'd have to fall back on the Malaysian airliner story because that'd be the next big missing not recovered aircraft. And that's the way it's going to be one hundred years from now people are still going to be talking about. We think we found it. There's a we tracked down the the flight plan, and we did the thing and we found an old window part. And we think this is this male Asia three seventy here it is. We're onto it. Oh, not. But he eventually they'll be right. Well, I don't know found Amelia yet and well. Well, we could ameliorate that one. Yeah. Okay. All right. Did he really say that? Yeah. But he's been doing this for twelve years. Aren't you used to this yet? He's a very punny guy. Very funny guy. So this is a snack story here is. So on one level is a cool somewhat. Heroux? Ick heartwarming rescue story about a near national guard unit that rescued three people from an airplane that got stranded on a glacier right Anchorage. Alaska. What am I looking at here? The Seattle times website Anchorage, Alaska three people were rescued after their airplanes sank in snow and ice at twenty mile. Glacier. The Alaska Air National Guard says airman from the tenth to twelfth rescue squadrons lifted a pilot and two passengers Thursday. Their names were not released, but Jeb what did you observe as being the kinda head scratcher? Gyp. Jeb. You're muted. Jab on mute, Jeb. I'm back. Okay. So I was just I don't know what you heard I was summarizing this story. And then I asked what you thought was the head scratcher about this three pow. Going to call the I had to go get a bottle of water. So you were actually going. Okay. All right. So I suffer is this whole thing about the Air National Guard Alaska Air National Guard. Rescuing this pilot and two passengers right? And what was it that you noticed that was a head scratcher about this story? I'm a pipe eighteen. Superclub which is a Huseyin airplane. Go. And that in tandem I mean, but it's got a big baggage thing area behind does. And there's such a thing as you know, a small child. So I mean, certainly possible that a two seat airplane can have three people in it illegal to. But I just I just thought it was curious. Okay. That's interesting. What you just said there? Real three people. You can have an infant under to carried hand carried. Oh, like lap carry. Lap child. There's no way squeezing somebody into the bag. Jerry's going to be legal, even if it's even if your legal weight and balance wise. Maybe if they were in diapers. All depends. I mean..

It's only one and a half times the weight of regular peop- fifty one. So right. You got a much higher power to weight ratio. It doesn't doesn't surprise me. At all that it surprised the pilot by getting to flight speed more quickly than expected. And this has happened to the pilots before speaking from. I tand experience that was how I made my first trike light the first time. I've Lou anything with an engine. All I was supposed to be doing was raised in the nose gear and let it settle and raising the nose gear and let it settle and little hang glider rig. The trike accelerated behind it forty horsepower. Our Kawasaki so much quicker than I expected. And when I tried to raise the nose. Well, the thrust pushed the trike gear forward and with much diff- arms on the control bar the wing pitched up in the next thing. I knew as three hundred three hundred fifty feet up the runway and climbing. All right. And I made three circuits before I had a setup that made me comfortable that I could get it back down on the pavement bending anything. And that's your go ahead. That's your story, and you're sticking to it. Right. There asked Dan Johnson. He was he was my instructor. All I have to say, it's a great thing that you took those hang gliders lessons. Yeah. Right. "I years and years and years ago, I was visiting Virginia Beach Virginia. All right. And we and I was traveling around with the show. We adjust traveled driven down from this is in the middle of winter. This is probably January February something like that. And we had just driven down from buffalo where they had some serious snow in buffalo. And so we knew we were going to Virginia Beach, and we were there was going to be summer vacation. We were just really excited about getting out of the winter. So we drove down from buffalo where there was like, I mean there were twenty foot. Snow banks was crazy. And now, we're in in Virginia Beach Virginia words, beautiful, and there's the ground is clear, of course. All right. And the first night we were there actually the the morning of the second day, they got a freak snowstorm. All right. And and in Virginia Beach, Virginia, this particular. Warning, it snowed basically dusting. All right. I mean, it was probably almost not measurable certainly half an inch. Okay. And the newspapers in Virginia Beach that morning called that blizzard. Okay. And and we're from buffalo where we're twenty foot snow banks, and we're going this is no big deal. So we gone out to get breakfast or something like that driving in the car. All right. And we quickly realized that it was like seriously dangerous. All right because all of these Virginia Beach folks had no idea in the snow. All right. I mean, it was a dangerous dangerous place. And so we basically did what we needed to do and said we're going back to the hotel. We're gonna hide out because this is like scary her about for about six hours until it all melted. All right. It was like they were winter wonderland. But I know joke the newspaper used the word blizzard in the headline, and I guess blizzard can be a relative thing. I clearly can. But that's what would happen in Florida. If it ever snowed there, which isn't because I've been down there when it was fifty degrees in January and people are losing their minds. You know, we're in Winterpark. Anyways. I hope it doesn't snow their job that would be a bad thing. Feel badger. You're already on record cat. I feel for you. "So when it breaks your wing. Okay. That's just you know, more metaphysical than I know. Oh, whoa. Whoa. Okay. Jeb. I wanna ask you this question. 'cause David's just as likely know the answer. But are there instances of of fixed wing airplanes tangling with dust doubles in any sort of exciting fashion? I I mean, a different kind of situation. I guess, but I can imagine were you on short final or or on climate. And I think the quick answer is. Yes, I think the greater longer answer is they might not be identified as such just scale and the the lack of photographic evidence. For example, there was an episode event. I don't know what to call it. I wanna say two three years ago, whereas Cirrus landed after a couple of Black Hawk helicopter said the part of the same runway and landed not completely normal landing in row. Well, just just just before touchdown any the airplane. Rolls left. You know, like one hundred ninety degrees or something like. That and makes a left turn ends up in the weeds. And you could almost see looking at the video where the spot the location. You knew where the Blackhawks departed from like thirty seconds later. This is the wake turbulence that thing, of course. But thirty seconds later, the Cirrus goes all fluey. Oh, I think I have seen. Yeah. Right. Okay. Yeah. It was it was out there as I say three years ago or so. Yeah. Right. But. Sure, it's happened. We don't have all that kind of video evidence of it. Right. Right. David. Did you do you have examples of fixing aircraft tangling with dust doubles? I've heard of it. I've seen photos of the results of never seen video of it happening and the incidence well, no scratch incident. The accidents that resulted from those in counters were almost always on final approach going into an airport. And. Heard a crop dusters. Having similar counters. Sure. Because out where they were you know, the on a hot day, you're going to get those puppies, particularly here in the western half of the US. Yeah. So yeah, I've heard of it a believe there've been some accidents attributed to it. But I've never really researched. It. It was all kinda hey hear what happened is. So and so no get out. And and it did. Yeah. Interesting. It crushed his soul and broke his airplane. Crushed. Like a country song. It sounds like a country. What if Marielle and Moffitt has already crushed your soul?
