"That's PW torch dot com slash KGO VIP but anyway mean gene. Know Gino Cappelletti. You WanNa talk about when we go back to People that left Vernon the Awa you know gene was one of those guys he he he started in the Awa gene got his start from Verne. Gene wouldn't Aben gene without vern if you WANNA really be technical because Verne was the one that put the suit on on Gene Oakland and made him the announcer. When Mario Neil back in the seventies was unable to unable to and wouldn't cross the picket lines for a strike and Vernon at the last minute went to Jean Oakland who was the WTN TV WTN is now care. Eleven for those that don't know but WTC on TV at the old. Calhoun Beach Hotel. Where the TV studios were and he went up to gene and bad rush right before the. All Star wrestling program was to begin and said the gene. You got a sport coat. You GotTa do the show for me and gene. He reflected that he did not know how to do wrestling and Burns said. Don't worry we're going to get through this. Just get out there and take the Mike and gene was very kind and in his Eulogy that he thinks Verne for for that. Start and all of the Celebrity that had brought him in the in the career that he you know got from it he said I wouldn't have had that without vern. Ganja and But Jeans Eulogy was a very nice tribute going through earns history where he talked about. Vernice the athlete in College. He talked a little bit about his serving our country and he talked about Vern be a new star out of college and putting the Olympics in nineteen forty eight You know he was an alternate in the Olympics and then he talked about how he came to pro wrestling and immediately which was unusual in that time period. I should point out to the it was very unusual for a wrestler to start a career and be main eventing right away in that era. It just didn't happen. Verne was the exception. So in nineteen forty nine. He immediately was a success because of his background is college. Background is amateur wrestling background and he was when the Dumont Network and gene was telling this story. You know. And I'm paraphrasing all of it right now but he talked about how the Dumont network out of Chicago was you know. Basically the the one link to the country at that point in this new medium called television and earned Ganja along with killer Kowalski and Liu says and gorgeous George and Buddy Rogers. We're but a handful of guys that every promoter in the country wanted to have on their cards and Verne was one of them. And that's one of the reasons that he became a household name. But you know gene also pointed out that Verne brought when we all know this this stuff all of us have said but gene pointed it out that Verne brought legitimate wrestling to the carnival antics that wrestling could sometimes do even back in that day and he said vern. What's the real deal and fans knew that when Verne came to the arena or his name was on the marquee that this was a wrestling match and I was seeing a real wrestler regardless of who is opponent was and Jean pointed out that that was the stardom for Verne through the fifties and when he started the Awa breaking away from the Nwea in nineteen sixty that Verne Ganja had no problem with getting sponsors for the show and you know he was endorsing products? I don't know how many people know this way. But there's a vern gone yet. Board game that out in the mid fifties. They're they're legitimately is it was vern. Gone Your Board Game. If if folks are familiar with the board games and they have a little spinner where you spend the take your turn and you'll go so many squares all this thing and you know well. The board game on burn. Ganja was one of those products in the fifties now back in that era such a thing was really unheard of. It's not on like today. Where marketing for everything in especially the wwe? How well they market Everything for a wrestler but Verne had that that game folks can go out if you can find a game right now you can pay a couple of hundred two thousand dollars for it. I'm sure it was probably five bucks back in the day if that. Yeah but Gino. Cappelletti went through all of this that he had a lot of anecdotes and and told about you. Know How they tape and he said you know burn would get excited when something didn't go right and and and you know but vern was the boss. He wanted the product to be right and he said Yeah wasn't as glitzy as it is today and his as professional looking but it was for the for the era was the state of the art and and vern started the color era in Tv and one thousand nine hundred seventy to one of the first programs in the twin cities in the in the local media market to go to color if fans don't realize that it is true that all star wrestling was one of the first color shows. Even though color had been around since the mid sixties you know in various measures but all star wrestling Verne was the first local market television show with wrestling. That did that. Here's what I want to share about gene at the very end and this I tell you Wade if you looked around the church and I did and I was one of them. That did this as well when gene delivered the line. I'm going to give you. There was not a dry in that church wrestler family friend. Whatever they were there they all you saw them wiping their eyes and Gino. Oakland finished his eulogy with this. And I and I'm not gonNA pretend that I can do it as Jean. Oakland did 'cause we all know what a great voice the Gene Oakland has. But this is what Jean said he said as I end my eulogy. There is only one way that we can do this. Fittingly Ladies and gentlemen by heavyweight champion of the world vern done. Yeah that's very appropriate. Everybody wiped there is yes. And that's.

"But until then I'm a stay all up big y'all, and I'm gonna be relentless witty. Why are you like just a Stephen a I'm a stay all up being y'all? If Stephen thinks that is a great business model, and by the way, I do believe we need more minority voices in sports radio. Sports radio is way too white been in the industry since its infancy. But I would say this if he thinks it's such a great idea put his money behind it. Start a serious channel or something like that just black sports talk and see if it works and see if it's profitable. What do you want to call the channel? A black Knebworth. Okay. I like that last last one. We finally we lost a legend last week. When mean Jean Oakland passed away at the age of seventy six long. Yeah. WWF announcer mean gene Oakland on? Yeah. That's the way seventy six years old. I thought he was much older. I wish seventy six I would've thought he was around a long was he was a hustler, man. He had hustled, gene. Yes. Thanks to Kevin on Twitter. A couple of other people for tagging in this classic mean, Jean Oakland clip from the nineties as he makes his borderline farewell professional wrestling wants my belt, but I wanted to and I had to fight inch branch to get this. And I'm not to lay down my back and let someone cover me. I thank you very much. Gene. Can't even hold it together me, gene o mean Jean together. Really good to let some girl cover me. Oh god. Yeah. All right. That is this week's addition. Of borderline every car comes with a sheriff stories. He got great ding in your bumper. The way super Dave Osborne. Zero the third one the third one was the captain from the captain O Ryan all seventy six right Lavigne's in threes. Seventy six years old to. Yeah. It's all mean Jean fell down super duper. Dave who whose name is Bob Einstein had he had cancer. Did you ever meet him? Nobody used to watch super Dave Osborne. Religiously. Shave my childhood. Yeah. Areas. His his comedians in cars, getting coffee was really funny. It just him begging Jerry for that for that car. You still keep the car cherry in the end Jerry shafts him. And he's like, no, you're not keeping the car in reality. He let him have you? Did let him have the car Porsche. No. It was the the NSF that he saw the league got for doing the school the Super Bowl commercial. Yeah. So yeah. Yeah. You know, in fact, Bob, Einstein got his start writing for the smothers brothers. And that's how far back he went. Yeah. I just watched fuck. It's is it speeds zone or cannonball run to that has the smothers brothers in it, cannonball, run and cannonball to not go to the Dulles airport. It's fresno. No, no, Dulles L dollars. Fucking. Would you like peanuts? Great bit. Are you what favourite cannonball run film? Chris one to speed. So now, it's gotta be one all the classic. Absolutely. The dell. Louise in that as you know, captain fantastic. Whatever captain. Right. Oh, big absolute client. And then, of course, the doctor with the crazy is what was his name that is all world that tobacco tolerance. With. He's always got the cocktail the finger. Talk to your name. Oh, my God the face is. He looks like. Looks like Neil young on heroin. When they get pulled over by the cops in there comes out of the van doors open and there's that face right there. He's got the needle. He's got the needle. Now, that's a great kid. Have you ever see the first cata ball run movie? It is a fucking class out. Takes are the my favorite part of that movie because there's a part where Dom deluise can't stop laughing and at a certain point rich. What's his face? Spermatozoa can hit him in the face. And he actually does slap in the face. The six take. And he's like if you don't get it, and you start giving these because my love the picture of Trump's doctor has made it into this array of Kevin. He really fits right in everything. Connected. Inspire back to Trump. But last night we were last night. We were thinking of like, we're trying to come up with t shirts and stuff. So just like watching clips from old movies that Lambeau skipping across the lake in speed zone is really the that's the highlight. I think they're all fake Lambeau in that movie. To too hot women in the first one driving it. And then you never tend to get pulled over the zip down there tops. And then it's a female cop that pulls them over their plan is foiled. And then the second one there's a color change in the car they hose it down, and it goes from white to read the color changing paint. And then the third one they skip it across the water. And then it's I think Michael Spinks his car sometime get the doors or something, it's it's bad. So anyway, brother brother, what's going on brother in you hosted? Well, you know, the last time we saw each other was when we were gonna do that thing with Tanner remember that we were looking for some show or was it never happened yet. Did it happen was gear? No, there's something. See you at the top gear audition was years ago. And then after that there was some kind of build competition show that I was not remotely qualified to host. Apparently, I wasn't either. I didn't get the job that guy. Lou God who Santiago's go..

We're tuxes be classy. Devin wants to know do they ever considered giving Jane of piper's pit style show? No that wasn't jeans. Rowley was Jane was the neutral guy that wouldn't have worked. Jay wants to did Bruce ever have main gene burger can't say ever had the pleasure. Abba mean Jean burger? Ryan wants to know nothing salacious spammed the list, but any funny manging party stories. How funny was gene always was the life of the party, whether he was telling jokes, whether he was at the end of the piano singing in that that was gene Oakland was. Just a lot of fun. Last question here. This one's from Robert Collins, what was gene Oakland like in real life. What you see is what you get in many respects. But he could also be very very reflective one of the nicest guys that I've ever had the pleasure working with one of the most talented individuals ever in the business because I just had confidence in him, and I trusted him as well. And he never let me down in that regard. So. So summit all up. He was good father. And he was just a really really good, man. And there's not a lot of that out there. And I think that gene fits in that category. Without question. The greatest to ever do it the best that ever did it Maine's in Oakland. You'll be missed. We appreciate you guys. "It was laborious and it had become a in some ways a play thing for Howard Finkel. We're Howard would have guys do interviews that would never air. And when we started looking at the stockpile of everything that we had just came up with a better way to do it. And I stole the idea from mid south because that's how we had done them in mid south, except we did them with actual commentators. We would throw back and forth, and you do generic interview with rapper outs. So what it became was, gene. Being in a. Studio, gene, would do the market specific stuff. Hey, a Lanta. We're going to be there. This Tuesday night at the Omni arena. Tickets are available here. Gene, would do those wrap arounds and then he would throw to talent. And they would do the same interview in that interview would air in every market that that match was pertinent. It wouldn't be specific to Atlanta. But gene stuff would. So it required gene coming to the studio and knocking all of that stuff out. And it was a lot. To Jean felt like a lot more work because he had to come to Stanford in reality. It was a lot less work for gene talent editors everybody. But it was just new and it was and it was different. And then vents counter was looking at it like God damn it. If he lived here would be a problem and that scare gene to death. He did not wanna live in Sanford. Hey did. Good point. Okay. Let's talk about wrestlemainia four this your first wrestlemania. It's a big moment. It's a big time preview and we've done full show on it in the archives. But I feel like you have to have something you can share with us. Jane from that show Jesus. My first my first wrestlemainia, man. And I'm the producer of the show. I'm twenty five years old kid. I'd never produced. The Russell may know what the hell I was doing invents. Told me make sure you have production meetings with all of the commentators. And and make sure that you get with everybody individually and have a production meeting with them and go over everything, Mike. Okay. Yes, sir. Got it. So I'd had. One with gorilla monsoon and those guys which took about an hour and a half or so and my next one was gene Oakland's gene shows up. Jane comes to the room, and he walks in and Rosie. What have we got today? I said, well, let's go show goes do we really need to go over the show. I said, well, yeah, you need to know what you're doing. 'cause I'm gonna be interviewing guys, right? Well, yes, sir. And he's like got it. All right. See their kid and walked out of there. That was my production meeting with Jean ochre Lynn, and he was gone before. I realized what the fuck just happened and everything worked out perfectly. He did interviews. Let's talk about Sean Mooney. Sean Mooney is another guy that I really think about this era. The I mean to me it's maintain Sean Mooney from the announcer side. Sean tweeted out sad day in the world of entertainment, and for the fans of the great at the gene Oakland, as I've long said there was gene Oakland, and then there was the rest of us rest. Well, my friend has tagged goat. I mean, everybody's saying that everybody not just fans people who were in the business people who are, you know, his coworkers in that business. They all regard him as being the goat. What how did gene handle some of the younger talent?.

"And this is something we and asked about a lot the wrestling album. Rick derringer, our did a song rock and roll hoochie coup. And of course, I think most people dare injures most famous piece of wrestling business is whole insurance thing real American, but to fruity on the wrestling album as well jeans bar this, you weren't there for it. But you've probably got some fun stories that have what trick trickle down the line over the years right on the wrestling album, gene did to fruity on piledriver, which was the second album is gene actually did rock and roll Chiku. And Joe lots my friend. Joel watts who came up to WWF with me produced the video for that. And that's when actually got to meet and work with Rick derringer, which was one of the coolest things ever for a twenty four year old kid be sitting there with Rick derringer and Rick derringer playing guitar in slow motion just the coolest shit, but that's being around gene, Oakland and him doing that was just crazy because he's telling derringer what to do on different things. And it was just classic because here's again, Rick derringer, a rock and roll God. I don't care who you are. You debate me all you want. But he was he is a rock and roll God. And it was really nice to see Oakland collaborating with derringer derringer actually having the time of day to speak to me that was my memory of the piledriver wrestling album, which gene Oakland. Let's talk about the nineteen eighty-seven slamming awards you were there December six eight Caesar's palace in Las Vegas. Palaces a cool wrestling place. I didn't really think about that. But you guys that wrestlemania? They are those champions there and evenly slimy. Ords Palestinian, gene. And Jesse Ventura are the host for this. And gene is also the co winner of the best head award, which Sese flair would certainly take issue with that title was shared with bam. Bam. Bigelow. What do you remember about the sleigh me awards for nineteen eighty seven a week's worth of rehearsals, one week being in Caesars in Atlantic City and having to go through every pain staking second of that show every single day the choreography with the dancers, and the guys who had never danced before end or really saying live before they did the the album, you know, in a studio and shit. So they never actually sang these things before and Vince wanted to do it all live and. Doing all real no lip synching and all that other good shit. In Jane, Jesse were holding it all together. And there was a bit that I was responsible for which was the fight with access Jim Duggan and Harley race. During the the night. There was a gimmick screen that went down on the stage that Harley and Doug and were supposed to go through. But they were only supposed to go through it. The second on the second live show the first live show. They were supposed to go around it and the second live show, we were actually going to break through it. Well, we had hurston million times. And we were doing the first show in Harley in Doug in her back there the waiting on the Q, and I give them the Q and before I know it they went right through the middle of the screen, and we only had one. Thank God for gene, Oakland because Oakland, reacted Oakland. He he didn't live. He did it off the cuff Jesse. If you go back and watch Jesse didn't know what the hell the do because he was waiting for him to come around the corner and Oakland was savior and Jean being on the spot. Like that was you put him out there live, and I never really had to worry about gene VN out there live because he would be able to cover whatever was thrown at him and everybody came back yelling and screaming. But at the end of the day. Yes, it was a fuck up. They just misunderstood. They thought they were only gone through wants, which they were just a second show and it all worked out for the better. Because. Has changed format of the vent centers sometime in nineteen eighty eight and Jean is the host of that talk about the change that you did here in how gene was feeling with this new role for years what the what had been was traditional interview segments where gene stood there with the talent interview them for every single market. It was time consuming..

Always love sitting down having conversations with them. We had him on the edge incursion show first and second season. He was always so much fun to be around. Always just in a great mood and was just always happy to see people and talk and just one of those guys that you felt good being around 'cause he was always happy in a good mood. Yeah. And and dare I say that you think back to your childhood and mean, gene is easily as much part of of, you know, people our age and our childhood as HOGAN as Andrei because he was the one always there holding that microphone and leading the the promos, and and also adding a not only sense of credibility because he did have that great voice in that great Demere and everything, but also that sense of humor and the stuff that him and Bobby did over the years, and you could just tell their their love for each other. You known him the ball guy with the mustache that was they're interviewing the likes of hulk HOGAN and big John's stud and Bobby the brain Heenan. I saw him I living in Chicago at the w eight that was burned Ganges TV, of course, that was based out of Minneapolis. But we saw it on channel twenty six every Sunday in Oakland was they're doing all the interviews. He was terrific. He went from the Awa to the WWF. And that really was the big time going from Minneapolis to go into the New York office in working for Vince McMahon. And of course, probably more people saw him across the globe.
