"It's not a renovation. It's a transformation. It's an entirely new haul. We stripped to the bones. And we rode the rickety elevator up to the third floor. A little history is in order. The New York philharmonic left its home in the acoustically perfect Carnegie Hall for the Lincoln Center complex in 1962. And their new concert hall was acoustically imperfect. And too large, Deborah borda explained on that construction tour. The hall was originally designed for acoustically for the envelope to be for 2200 people. When the hall opened the boards of directors of both the philharmonic and Lincoln Center, decided they wanted to have it the same size as Carnegie Hall, so they put in 2800 seats. Over the decades, various renovations tried to fix the inherent problems, but were unsuccessful. The philharmonic and Lincoln Center finally agreed to do a gut rehab making the space more intimate. And when the pandemic hit, those plans accelerated. The $600 million project employed over 6000 people, many of whom came from minority and women owned businesses. Coming out of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests. Henry Tim says the goal wasn't just to make a beautiful concert hall. I think the great hope with this project is that more people feel more welcome at Lincoln Center. We have been so committed to the heights of performance to that kind of ambition and that dedication which makes the greatest art. We have not been as dedicated to how do we reach more people. On their terms, not on ours. That's an important shift. So there are many outward facing aspects to the new geffen hall. People can watch concerts for free on both an enormous screen in the lobby and outside a studio next to the street. There will be visual art on display, and some concerts will be pay what you can. They have formed a committee to get through the towering stack of incoming lumpy Manila packages, full of neighborhood artifacts. And we take the item and we decide how old is it, what relevance does it have to the community, the historic nature of the community, do we already have something similar to it? For Ingram, the former volunteer fire chief, this is how a community rebuilds. I see it at some point becoming a community museum. They've gone back to our history our beginnings. And they're capturing all that. They capture in the soul of the community. But time is not on breezy point side. Over the next three decades, climate projections show that flooding and coastal areas of the city like this will become more common. And will likely cause even more devastation. "Thank you so much. They're very few new waivers who have an ongoing musical career. Duran Duran no span dad ballet? No. I bet Duran Duran could feel some food. You can feel but not creating new music that people still are drawn, not just stiller drunk you building new audiences and reaching people in new ways the way you have been. And I would love to ask you about you got there and it was a dark journey. Through record travails, record company travails. Can you tell us a little bit about what you went through before you came out the other side? Well, record being on a major label at the point where I was in the 80s and early 90s, I think the music industry is one of those industries where people feel like there's easy money. And if they can just figure out what the formula for having to hit song is then they will make that easy money. And then they go to the artist and they say, we need you to sound exactly like this thing that is already on the radio. And here are dumb ideas for how to do that. And this was, I mean, that really is about the size of it And that was a situation I really chafed at because I felt like if you don't like the music I'm doing, then just release me from my contract. So it was just a lot of waiting that out. I was bachelor number two and the album that would be a breakout for you. Yeah, bachelor in number two, I had recorded it was finished. There was a complicated situation I was on geffen and geffen and a bunch of other labels, merged into Interscope. So Interscope was getting a huge influx of other artists. And they actually told me I could leave if I wanted to. And I was like, thank you, Jesus. Finally, I can get out of this. And at that point, the Internet wasn't really a thing, but enough of a thing. So you could have kind of a mail order situation. And I was like, I don't care if I have to sell this out of the back of a van. I just have to get out of this situation. So now who do you write for? I remember talking with seeing a talk from several writers and where they'd answer the question, you know, why do you write? And one would say, one did say, I write to illuminate relationships because it's the relationships between people I don't want to understand. The other person said, I write because I want to stick it to the man. Well. Why do you write? For different reasons. I do, I really do, you know, relationships between people is very interesting. Finding or going through or observing a complicated situation and boiling it down to its essence and three and a half minutes is very interesting. It's like little magic trick or a puzzle. I like getting inside other people's heads and writing from their perspective to see what it's like, see what it's like. And then see where I intersect with that person. So there's different reasons. But there's something that sort of magical that happens when you have a complicated problem or feeling when you put that into words. And that's really interesting. And it's like a, it's like an ink plot. It's a raw shot test. It's you see things in it, and then the things suggest a story. And so you start writing a story. And it's just very interesting to me. They imagined much bigger. You know much more exciting whatever versions of themselves and it's like oh shit i mean he's just putting all the responsibility in each of our laps. I think basically what he's saying to is that everything begins with thought. Now he's if you can a harness your thoughts and direct your thoughts to to what you want and stay focused on that and then do the actual footwork that takes to achieve those things. That's really tough. That's the hardest. Part i think is the follow through and the consistency and not listening to what went before all those kinds of things are really words. You know because. I can imagine all kinds of great stuff but if i don't do anything about it it's just fantasy you know and i you know i'm pretty good at that. I'm pretty convinced that there's a. There's an element of luck in. Their belt is literally like this. Indeterminate rolling the dice. That you take every day where you do one stupid thing. It can blow up a lot of stuff. Did you have a kind of pressure that your character does of thinking like only one black person is going to be allowed to succeed here and it's got to be me. Yes not at my art school but in in Undergrad for sure. And even in grad school the more the elite the institution. The more that that's true there was there only graduated two black men in my my acting. Class in undergrad and we started as a class of fifty. We graduated a class of twenty and there were two black men. I was one of them in the play writing program at yale now known as the david geffen school of drama. I was the only black. I was the only black person out of nine playwrights that certainly increases the pressure right. Well it just increases the increases. A whole bunch of things increases the the ability to feel like you're in it for the actual art right or rather. Are you there to represent who you are as a person i mean. There's a reason why i was august. Wilson's assistant because there was no other black playwright in the program. At the time. I will talk a little bit about being august. It's a very interesting way of paying new employees more without having to pay existing employees. Yes this is the amazon factory worker versus corporate question. Well it's also just the question that if you have. A bunch of work is making fifteen dollars an hour and you realize that. No one's going to work you for less than seventeen dollars now like you can hire new people at seventeen dollars now. But that's not going to go down well with all the people who have been there already for a while and making fifty and so in order to move to seventeen is not just paying the new peoples. Haven't been you need to pay. Everyone's in the gets very expensive very fast but if you pay the new people fifteen and give them five thousand dollars signing bonuses then they think oh. This is effectively seventeen dollars now and the people who are working. S has fallen, but the flow of migrants transferred from Border patrol custody has grown as the administration tries to discourage people from crossing the southern border illegally. Joel Rose, NPR news with the current heat wave in the northwest and ongoing heat in Western states, has led to a plethora of recent wildfires. President Biden met today virtually with governor's Cabinet officials and private sector partners to try to come up with a plan by telling Western governors. In many ways the country has been playing catch up, and he said that needs to change. We know this is, uh, This is becoming a regular cycle and we know it's getting worse. In fact, the threat of Western wildfires this year as severe as it's ever been, Biden's plan would ensure no one fighting wildfires is making less than $15 an hour and the plan would out or convert to full time nearly 1000 firefighters across the host of agencies. Western states have already seen more than 2300 Square miles burned this year head of the same time last year, which saw near record levels of wildfire destruction.
