Toxic Stress

"Just as we saw light at the end of the covid tunnel, we now find ourselves back in the darkness. The psychological impacts of this pandemic being felt acutely. We live in fear of losing a loved one to the virus, a friend being killed by the police because of the color of their skin. Parents and kids exhausted of being cooped up together. Certainly told school will be online this fall millions who have lost their jobs a terrified by having to choose between buying food or paying the rent. Essential workers as stressed by the lack of effective protective equipment. The list of legitimate to worry about has grown nearly endless. Stress takes many forms and manifesto, myriad of symptoms at its was stress can elicit a toxic shock to our system that changes who we are at the very fundamental level. During covid acts of abuse neglect in household dysfunction are all on the rides while the stay at home orders help stem the tide of the pandemic. There's a mounting evidence that lead to violence in the home, becoming more severe and frequent. When we think of environmental factors that contribute to health problems like asthma, the impacts of stress from abused neglected dysfunction are often overlooked in the last decade understanding of both adverse childhood, experiences and toxic stress as adults has evolved. In large part, this is due to the work of Dr Nadine. Bug Harris an award-winning physician, researcher and advocate dedicated to changing the way society responds to Childhood Trauma. Doctor Doug Harris was appointed as California's first ever surgeon general by Governor Gavin Newsom in January twenty nine team. As California in general Nadine has had a bold goal to reduce adverse childhood experiences also known by the acronym ace or aces by half in one generation Dr Buck. Harris's career has been dedicated to serving vulnerable communities and combating the root causes of health disparities. After completing residency at Stanford she founded a clinic in one of San Francisco's most undeserved communities, Bayview hunters point it was Ed's. That Buck Harris observed that despite the implementation of National Best Practices for Immunizations Asthma. Obesity treatment and other preventive health measures a patient's still faced outsized risks for poor health, development and behavioral outcomes. In Two thousand eleven, she founded the Center Youth Wellness and subsequently grew the organization to be a national leader in the effort to advance pediatric medicine raise public awareness and transform the way society responds to children exposed to adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress. Dr Bernard Harris Is Talk. How Childhood Trauma Effects Health across the lifetime has been viewed more than six million times have book. The deepest will healing the long term effects of childhood adversity was called indispensable by the. New York Times I stopped by asking. What is like to be surgeon general during the time of Kobe? It's a little crazy. Yeah, it's a new role within government. It also feels really important. Because in this moment I think a lot of people are recognizing the importance of public health, and it's coming to a new level of awareness for a lot of people and so i. think that creates a lot of opportunities that I'm really grateful for. We will say this, but we kind of take our health for granted. Nadine we. We we go about our lives and this has been such a shock to the system. That is nearly all that we think about now for a lot of us. We're not just in this moment of covert nineteen, which is has been this incredible health crisis, but it's also showing all the cracks in our safety. Net it showing how much there are so many people who can't live without paycheck at. At showing how many folks are on the front lines it showing how dependent we are on healthcare, it's also showing how mental health is a huge issues, the stress of the pandemic and it's also showing up in the racial disparities right when we look and see that black and Brown folks are dying at a higher rate like there's a pandemic that comes across our country across the globe and yet. Yet in the United, states what see is that black and Brown people are dying at a substantially greater rate than others when I see the racial disparities around Kovin I feel outraged every day and I think about my kids and everything that I'm working for to ensure that they live in a state and in a country where they simply have equal opportunity right now. I'm not asking for a leg. Asking for any kind of you know anything special, and simply asking for equal opportunity for my children to be healthy, and well for my children to have their God given right to grow up and make themselves whatever it is that they will make of themselves, and so from that standpoint, it's been terribly challenging time if I'm speaking honestly because you know, we're all working around the clock, fighting Covid, and then we also have to be fighting all these other pieces fighting racial discrimination structural inequalities, all of these different pieces and for me, the fight has never felt more important and it. It feels like we're right on the front

California buys more masks, but some workers still lack

"Becoming the state with the most Coben 19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, Governor Gavin Newsom says any shortages pp at medical centers are happening on the hospital level. Hey, CBS is making Goldsby has that story. Standing in a Sacramento warehouse filled with hundreds of millions of masks. The governor says he's heard from nurses and other medical workers that they still don't feel like they're given enough pp. To keep themselves safe at work. We need to see more Distribution of a 95 mass to our front line workers somewhere, getting two or three for a week and I just want express this publicly as I can. That's unacceptable. He announced a new bridge contract to keep the masks coming to California to be stockpiled for a surge. But yes, also to be going out immediately. There is no longer a shortage here, so it shouldn't seem like there is in hospitals. We're sending out an unprecedented number of masks. I want to make sure those masts are going to our front line workers. And so we are advancing much more aggressive and I say more aggressive because we haven't been shy in this space. But Maura aggressive protocols of accountability. Newsom says the state is working with the California Nurses Association to deal with what looks like a transparency problem at the hospital level. "Based off of the information that we gather together couples and they meet and marry at the alter and then we follow them for eight weeks. We help them or I mean we don't hold their hand through it because we wanted to really be themselves like what we're talking about. We want them to themselves that the NFC eight weeks. They can decide whether they want to remain married or get divorced. And it's It's always mind-blowing what you can learn from watching to strangers try to be married like literally within minutes And I think that's what people really attracted to the idea that these people are jumping into this marriage club without ever having been there without Maybe sometimes even having role models that was mayor is so some people need help than others. "On the helmet thing. Podcast wells atoms filling in for Brooks is on the phone. All the way over in Nashville and we are bringing bringing into the show right now. Dr Abe Malcolm. He's the founder and medical director of concierge. Md L. A. It's a home based concierge medical practice in Los Angeles that focuses on. Well care as opposed to sick care. We've got a lot of questions. Doc about this pandemic thank you so much for being on the show. What does it take a long vaccine? Good question there's multiple steps that go into creating a vaccine so it starts with identifying the virus sequencing the viral genotype replicating that into a lab. These are steps that we've actually gotten fairly good progress on so far the next step after that is to figure out what delivery mechanism to get into animal studies. Which is the first step. Then you need to do a small scale trials where you test. The efficacy in the safety of the virus of the vaccine and then ultimately can be widely distributed. But we all know that with vaccines. There's a ton of controversy and we have to be done safely because the last thing you want us to create a vaccine. We're actually fuel. It doesn't give them any orange. This is I don't know unprecedented. I guess since like nineteen eighteen or another but are we or is the medical community kind of skipping steps in the vaccine. They want to get this thing fixed sooner rather than later. So essentially all laboratories are debuting their efforts from other vaccines to tax. There's vaccines that are being worked on for malaria and other drugs that all those resources are now being poured into chrome virus. So in that sense. Yes in terms of Saito sorry So question regarding that how. How much information. Sharing is there between those labs or if each one of these labs kind of working independently trying to come up with their own Solution I don't know the exact answer to that question but you know you do. She reports of like Bill Gates Foundation for example working with government agencies because he's got a very robust infrastructure for developing vaccines. So I'm sure there's interdisciplinary into government agencies cooperation but that being said I would imagine. Countries are trying to win the race of developing a vaccine. Because it's very impactful for their own country and their reputation world right. I don't know if this has been like confirmed the news that I watch you know talks about these wet markets in China and like. There's a good chance that's where this thing derived from whether that's a reality or not. Like how dangerous are those places? And like why is it if they are dangerous wise acceptable for them to continue to be operated? That's a really good question and I don't.

"Look. We're all trying to be better feel better. Just you know improve ourselves right but the problem is there's so many products out there that promise and promote wellness but they're always attached with like you have to do a drastic diet or an extreme fitness routine are take purchase over the top supplements that are expensive. And you gotta take all day long. It never ends but what I found was I've started taking. Cbd and that's something that helps me feel better without making drastic changes to my routine more specifically caliber. It's a because it's a better way to consume cbd because he believes that everyone deserves feel better naturally without all those changes. So it's perfect now. What they've done is they've made more precise and reliable. Cbd product that's easier to take than even the oil which I know a lot of people like so you get all the benefits a CD but in a tasteless dissolves powder that your body absorbs more rapidly. So what I've done is I don't sleep. Well I mentioned that probably plenty of times. I've never been able to take naps but what I've started doing started putting some caliber in my morning. Coffee and is tasteless. So it doesn't ruin. The coffee doesn't no aftertaste. No Greasy oily residue and I take it and then when it's time for me to rest. I've started taking naps when it's time for me to go to bed. I fall asleep so much easier than I used to. So I'm taking naps. I'm falling asleep easier and as a result I'm feeling more rested obviously less stressed. I feel calmer. And it's all because the caliber. Cbd So what you do is it comes in premeasured packet so you never worried by taking too much too little and you can take it with you on the go and you mix it with food drink. Water could be a smoothie or protein. Shake or like I said even just water you mix it. You enjoy the benefits no weird taste and what you can do is you can rediscover your bestself with CD product that's clinically proven to be superior to standard CD oils so caliber gives all the benefits of CBD. But in just fifteen minutes. And apparently that's twice as fast as the oil which is pretty great and it's clinically proven that your body absorbs four hundred fifty percent more. Cbd with caliber than the others. This was huge for me because I have four young kids. I can't get high just to feel better but caliber unlike other products out. There is completely..

"Said well I feel like I believe but I feel like I just feel uncomfortable going to churches now and he said why and I said this. I feel like I've messed up so many times. I feel guilty when I walked through the doors. And and he says Tell me more and I told him some more. I said I feel like I did this wrong. Did that wrong I did this. I did that and we spoke for well. I spoke for several minutes at this man or a nice man and then he said to me when I was done with my little Spiel and my my guilt. He said to me look at me. He said he said do I look fazed? I said no he said. Do you think that maybe I haven't done all those same things I said? I don't know he said said do I look like I haven't heard all of those exact same things before may be done all of those things before I said I don't know he said I just want you to know everything you're saying it's completely normal. I hear this all the time and I would say that that was a form of therapy and so I would say that. There's many different types of therapies agree. And let's not give them necessarily title just know that it said there are many different types of people who do this type of emotional work and essentially what I'm saying is the help is out there for people who are looking for it and There's lots of different ways to start that conversation amen. Ooh No well done is insecurity unattractiveness but hey but if full disclosure we all have it I have it full disclosure. We all have insecurities and we all have it. We all do agree more. And it's actually it's actually can be super beautiful when you see that in somebody like when you see somebody is insecure about something and it's okay like you that's part of being in a relationship you learn each other's insecurities and you try and support each other through it and stuff but when the when the insecurity is almost a reeking of desperation. That's when it's unattractive I under insecure like if you put me up on stage next to Gavin to sing. I'm the world's worst singer like I'm GonNa be dancing like my wife is a world champion. Dancer. I'm not a dancer. I am dance. I should say that I am a dancer. But I'm not a trained dancer. So yeah there's like an insecurity side and take off my shirt next to brooks and my stomach is in. I don't have an eight pack as more like a pony keg but people that embrace their insecurities that's a that's actually such beautiful in craziness and like and like A. It's an amazing thing but then people that try their insecurities have reek of desperation. Or they try to overcompensate for them or something that that's actually a turnoff is self deprecation unattractive to you or is it attractive to you I like self deprecating humor. Yeah and so I think sometimes there are. There are versions of the right. We were just talking about this off. Brad Pitt has just figured out or we'll because he's so self deprecating and he's so smart and witty and funny that it just makes you love him warm good actor to. Oh you know. And he no. He's not just a pretty face. You know he he he. He earned success he. He's got lots of talent Gavin in the gutter immediately. Amy How like Percy the door would do legends of the fall music playing behind me man blown against me so I think that there are many different versions of this. This sort of sick. It's like you don't even know. But you and amy or dating. Abc probably tell you about our boyfriends towns with her boyfriend. Which is the podcast with you. I think I think that that that when people are insecure you know some people wear it on on their sleep their insecurities some people really overcompensate for insecure. I think I think a lot of it has to do with how we're seeing them get through their insecurities because how we how they conquer or at least deal with your insecurities is very telling about the other parts of their personality type and the things that we may or may not be attracted to you know.

"Can't see the experience with more than one person in a row like I can't. I won't be able to do that. Do you know what I mean. I wouldn't get. That's a fascinating isn't Sharpe's of of of the physical element of things to just elevate just elevates all the things that could not be said and that connection is so the physical part of what happens is just. It's an extension of all of those emotions and and those and and all the way G C I in in all these other capacities of your life together. Right amazing well said brother how. This is an left turn. But how do you feel about couples therapy? Sure why not like couples go to you. You want a better diet like have a Dietitian come in you. Want a better body have a trainer like why can people not do it for their relationship? I think that's actually a sign of health not trouble so many people think if they all people are going to therapy like even individually even individually if an individual goes to therapy. There's a stigma that there's something wrong with this person that they are broken or they need to be fixed and I've been to therapy. It's awesome. The first time I went to therapy was last year because I was wanting to work through hockey stuff to to be able to release and let go of a lot of the angst and frustration and resentment an unfulfilled dreams or goals that I had with hockey and I sat down with this guy and he says. Have you ever been therapy? And I was like no he goes. It fascinates me when professional athletes. The amount of pressure that you guys are under that you don't have somebody to voice your emotions and feelings with. I cannot believe that you have never had therapy in your life and and in I talked with him and I was like this was the greatest thing ever. It was just a conversation about what I was feeling what I was thinking. And the term therapy has such a negative connotation culturally and that's for an individual. I believe that's for couple as well instead of their broken or in trouble. They're actually healthy because they are working to have the best life or relationship possible. I sign of strength and health the AD. I don't necessarily disagree with you there. I think I think someone who cares enough to go to therapy is a sign that they're at least sane enough to know that they need help. Although I would say that you know I think it's even say strong enough to say they need chur want want maybe not need but want. I agree with you and I also think that people have to bear in mind that that there's going to be better and worse versions of that and eggs meet people who are more or less gifted at that with you so I don't think necessarily that someone goes to a therapy session necessarily finds the right person to talk to you. Know what I mean. They may have to go to more than one person to find the person that is right therapist for them. You know what I mean. Because that's let's be. Let's be clear and let's be fair. A therapist is a human being and and we all know as human beings that some of us are better or worse at our professions. And we all know that there's people who are better at Saint Profession that we and there's GonNa be people better at that profession that you may go to so you know there's better singers out there in the world than I am. I know that so there's going to be better therapists out there than maybe the one that you're going to right now you know. And and so I think that's also fair to say something to keep in mind. You might not find the right one right away. It may take you a bit cell important you know. What else is the stigma with? It and I do understand the apprehensions of doing it. I really do people talk even professionals therapist is they have. They have tools and a skill set. So if you have a problem or an issue or something you want to resolve. That's why you go there. You have something to resolve. They can come at it and a couple different ways with different activities or skills or questions or things that they can do to really help you. Get some clarity on that I represent. That's and that's where I think they're super valuable. They'd be retrained in that element really helpful when you have something. You're trying to work through a resolve or figure out or get clarity on the other thing that I think is cool about going to therapists. Is that if you ever do unto in therapy session know that whoever you're talking to therapists is always crazier than you are. Well you're the one paying them to be there. So are you sure I thought there was? That really changed my life. Have you guys I have? I have one that I've seen for this for hockey. I've had actually multiple people I. I don't know if I'd call them therapists Column performance coaches can call them. Whatever you want but like people that have helped me even mentors in column mentors people that have helped me work through some of my personal stuff with my sport and wanting to release any sort of Like any sort of chains are remnants are or Anything it's still has grip that it has on me so I can smoothly efficiently and liking happily transition to a new phase in my life. You know I think it's also When people are talking about who they speak to what they say why they don't WanNa go to their therapist or talk to somebody and I understand that 'cause I don't go to the therapist but I do have conversations with people you know and and I know therapist Kinda reminds you this conversation. I had one time of this preacher and sitting in this In this place and he says me. Tell me about your relationship with God and at that time I says said to him what relationship God and he said. Well what do you mean and I.

"That you are the most proud of some assuming like whoever wrote this that means? Gavin can't say singing and you can't say hockey mine is easy. I've I've said it on this show before. Said what's I've asked the question to think it was when Derek. My brother-in-law Derek on asked I said what is your greatest success in an ask myself. That question mine is following instincts. So that is my favorite character. Trait is that I trust myself and I follow my instincts. I like that you know what I have to say. That's that's a special one picking up on peoples vibes. I really pick up on people's I can't say that I know everybody's intent when I'm dealing with them but oftentimes I really. I really do catch a pretty accurate vibe. On what what their what their intentions are when I when I meet them where if I feel like they're a good or a bad person or they're extremely awesome or just conniving you know what I mean. Good Judge of character a lot of times. You know I get lucky with that gold on. Can I pay you a compliment? Yes please look good in black today so I believe in every in every interaction between two people. There's an exchange of energy either. I eh give energy or I take energy and same for you like either you give me energy or you take energy from me in the time. I've known you you've never taken energy from me. You've always given energy so every time I see you and I hope it comes through in this podcast. We have an awesome time to get angry and we laugh the show. We laughed during the show. We laugh after the show. But I think it's an amazing amazing character trait for human when every time you think of that person. And that's you in this case you think of somebody that gives you energy. Thank you man and to.

"Just over the top SLOB. I think a typical started the way men tend to be portrayed also on top of that. I think you're right. There are certain guys Celebrate THEIR SLOB them. In that regard of the think that's the most vile yet but tractive primal version of self is. That's what should be portrayed. You know what I mean. It's actually funny. Having having spent my whole life in locker rooms. It's funny to see it's funny. Yeah it's funny to see guys try and act like guys because they think that's what locker room guys do like even even if you're at a public gym in somebody's in the men's locker room walking around with no towel on just Dick. Swing in everywhere. It's like put a towel on man. I've been my whole life in professional locker. Rooms you shower and then you come out and put a towel on. It's just respectful right. It's nobody wants to see you're just like Oh there's a locker Mike and do what I want. Yeah I get that right. But there's be a gentleman like have some respect for people around do you WANNA stare at my junk Like why are you walking around with no or something like that? A guy like sticking his hands down his pants pretending to be a dude. That's not a man. Yeah I agree enough on that. I agree. No keep talking about this because I think you're right. I think you're spot on Bro. Got Answers what makes you you. Gavin Brooks feel sexy or desirable as men. Not What do you like about a woman? But what makes you feel like? Oh Hey I'm sexy is supposed to be an object that nice watcher when I go like some kind of clothing or anything. It's a great compliment makes feel sexy. Oh I think you know when somebody comes over and they make it a point to tell you you know you're looking dynamite or you know like the other day when when amy was real nice and she said hey what did you do in. I said were deal man looking good you know I say hey thanks we appreciate that that makes you feel good. That makes you feel sexy. It makes you you know. I think I think men were really respond to verbal compliment I can't speak for women of course but I'm assuming women also respond in that regard similar similarly But men like to be complemented just like anybody else you know. Just like just like the females he went. Un a totally different way with that. I was going to go. I was going to wear. You'RE GONNA go. What can I do? That makes me feel sexy. That's up give it to us. That's how I interpreted. The question. Mine is honestly training. I don't train. I don't work out to look a certain way like I'm not a physique athlete. I trained for performance to be an amazing shape. I don't do bodybuilding or like that kind of stuff like if you look at my body. I'm not an instagram model of what you think of like a body. I always think that every time you put up. Something really showed up my instagram model. Exactly so I don't. I don't train for Physique but knowing that I can perform athletically just makes me feel. I feel sexy. I feel I feel athletic. I feel masculine feel like yeah. I just I F- feel super comfortable and I think comfortable feeling comfortable and feeling confident Make you feel sexy. I think it's interesting that you say that you need to train to be essentially capable. Yes not not beautiful. Right yeah I think that's it's ironic too because I think that a lot of people who a lot of the sort Instagram -able physiques. Like you like you mentioned. They're not that functional. Yeah as far as athleticism is concerned an and just all you have to do is look at the body of of Somebody. Who's like a boxer? Typically or you know a lot of these guys who who play. Professional Sports. It's not necessarily the sexiest. What we are. What were sold as Sexy Zeke? But that's functional but also I mean I I don't have any judgment against that it's it's no no no me neither but it's interesting that there's people work out for different respect times you know if somebody wants to fitness and wellness and is is yoga to them perfect if somebody wants to just run long distances like America on which doesn't build muscle but that's how they feel confident and comfortable perfect like I. I don't judge how anybody lives their life. I'm just saying for mine. I love Analogy of performance athleticism. And that makes me feel confident. Which makes me feel sexy right so if I was to apply that to my life if I thought like you with my workout.

"Deal Gavin. What is Equality Brooks? Has that you wish you had a love. Brooks's COM What do you think that's rooted at in for him? I think that Brooks has done wild already. In other facets of his life and that's helped serve create a relaxed Mindset for him a lot of ways and why do you think you don't have calm? 'cause I spent a lot of my time. Suppressing my wild just say suppressing because this is the tip of the iceberg. You know what is my behavior? What we're seeing. Yeah Yeah we're the you want more time left. Always being like what else does he have up his sleeve. Yeah I feel like you have a really good grasp on Gav. I'm very careful about a lot of things because of the type of job that I do and things like that. Be careful with my hands at be careful with my voice after. Be careful physically about certain things so I really had babied a lot of things that I would normally wouldn't have babied if this wasn't my career. You know what I mean besides a family member or a manager who knows you best. Joey my best buddy joey. Yeah no my brother probably best family or CO workers. Who knows you the best? Probably MY BUDDY. Joey own my buddy Fez Fez from Keith at seventy show Andrew. I mean there's a group of guys on real tight with yeah we confess because he looks like Oh yeah so everybody. Start calling fast but There's a group of guys different versions of me. You know what I mean and each one of each. I've got a lot of colors. You know what I mean Personality wise and in each of my friends fits into a different. I think each of them brings out different shades of those of a different different color of me. You don't understand what I'm saying. Here's a question for you. Do you feel internally like you cannot decide which of those shades you truthfully are and you are hoping to step into full-time being one of those shades. I'm all of them. I'm somebody who always went from table to table growing up in order to Maine like at launch. I'd go to ten tables and sit there. You're hungry kid friends so hungry you know just because that was my personality type he ought I mean and fit in different groups for different reasons. You don't mean so you know had friends who were the Nerdier group Nerdier groups who whatever 'cause I got good grades and then I played sports so mother friends were more the jocks and then I enjoyed music and so I had music friends and theater and the theater friends. And then you know you like you you understand. So I had a lot of different interests and those interests are on I had aptitudes in all of the all of those interests. Fortunately so you know I. I had a very diverse group of people Who I associated with. Got Along with and not any of them necessarily got along with each other. That makes sense. You know what I made. I don't because I was thinking. What did you see my personality type? You were kind of the middleman that brought common ground to anyone. You couldn't really put all the scripts I couldn't put those groups together. They were so separate. You know what I mean like advanced placement group. But you're also you know you're you're playing street ball. You know what I mean. I just different. You know it was the same for me. A lot of I was. I was part of the athlete group but I also had a groups that didn't I didn't end some some like I remember some of the hockey guys like in school when I was in like grade. Ten or eleven or twelve. The hockey guys only hung with hockey guys. And they they hung in the click and I was like I like people are people. You don't have to be on the hockey team for me to be friends with the same way when I played hockey every still had friends in the community that was playing in your weren't hockey players. Yeah So I've simulate without very much totally I I had a conversation about it with a buddy of mine who I grew up with. He was like yeah. I remember like you got to be like Sixteen fifteen sixteen again. We'd call you come play ball and you're like Nahmad. I gotta work. I'm working on these songs kind of fell in love so much music that I yanked myself out a plan ball and then they'd be like men were playing a game. You want to be out here. It's you know we're going to the next hour we're gonNA play those guys and whatever but man I got. I got a GIG in three days. Man I WANNA get this songs up and ready and so but it was nice having those invites and you know I still loved all those guys but my ultimately my interest in music kind of subtlety out of a lot of those those those things that I enjoyed a lot. You know it makes sense. You need to debit. I still love those guys and I still played ball here and there just wasn't as wasn't as much. The same thing happened with me when I was fifteen i. I stopped playing baseball because they start playing summer hockey the hockey through the fall and winter and then. I play hockey in the summer where I used to play baseball too. Yeah Yeah you get you get you get pulled away but you with interest but you still have those friends Eric. 'cause you they knew you were competitive and your cooling whatever so they warned you know you understand what? I'm saying the true friends now. The ones that are actually your true friends actually just support you and your mission totaling. No they see what it means to you and the other ones that maybe aren't your friends. It's filter that sort of separation filter and they'll be like all he's too cool. He's doing his own thing. Or whatever but your true friends therefore you agreed. How would you guys describe Your High School Self? And we'll maybe like a couple of words this very easy for me. I was nonexistent high school. I was when I was thirteen. I was already nineteen years old. Playing pro hockey that is where my mindset was so like my friends used to try and give me a good drinking and you start and get go to parties. Try and get me to smoke And these were my best friends in the world and I would just sit there and be like thirteen fourteen fift- edges be like laugh like you don't even know it. Well you know it but I have the NHL in the palm of my hand. Four years from now like. I'm already for years from now playing in the NHL And they were just. They were teenage kids in school. And so I was like I have to be in school for now because this is part of the process. But I'm already three or four years from now so I didn't school to me was completely irrelevant. Dating in like high school and those problems and issues in peer pressure was all irrelevant for me because I was just I was laser D- on making the NHL. So I wouldn't say my my like my high school years. Were normal at all. But how would you describe yourself inside score? Focus to slay focused. And what was the other one? You irrelevant school. It was just like I don't know who's just I wanted to matter I want. Yeah just didn't matter. I wanted to be somewhere. I knew it was going on. I wanted to be there. Kevin I mean there are multiple. Years is cool in each one was different. He's three times it's totally totally leaps and bounds. I mean those years or so They're they're they're big years of your life you know See that's where I disagree like those years. Were nothing for me. Thirteen to seventeen is giant. Change IN MY OPINION. I mean when I was thirteen a win from like you know went from like Gi Joe to you know medical school and I was like I'm going to go to medical school to probably end of medical school. You know I was really religious and thought I WANNA make the blind see like Jesus did. I'm going to be off Amal Gist and that's what I WANNA do. I've ever played music but I thought it would be a selfish lifestyle that went to a concert and I was like no. This is good this heels people. This helps people decide. I play museums fifteen when that happened. That's so cool. Weird right silly but is so cool you got into music because it heals people and helps people. I already play music by. I didn't think I know career it would be the right thing to do because I felt like it was such a personal thing to me and it seems selfish to hand brother. It's weird right so so then but I thought Oh. This'll be selfish but then when I saw a concert. Billy Joel play I went. Wow I looked at the people around me thought. Wow this is this is medicine. Music is this. This is not selfish. I should do this. You know but that really can really change my focus from being this this hobby this a you know something I did just for me to this is this is something I should do because because it not only makes me happy but it'll it'll it'll be good for people to other people to So then So for me. Those years were very big because those are the years that change me the no I mean I literally remember having a meeting as as a kid as a probably a fourteen thirteen fourteen year old with principal you know and it. I remember I said the principal. I should listen. I'm wasting my time here in high school I needed to pursue medicine. This is this is the time in my life where I need to be focused. I need moving ahead. Why am I reading Shakespeare? I don't WanNa read Shakespeare. Ironically I become what a rider I mean. He's almost song right so so I didn't know I thought I knew but I didn't. You know the the big life moment hadn't happened for me yet to truly find my direction and Amazingly just having that opportunity allowed me to really choose my direction and then and that from that point on you know everything changed. Academics became less important. You know I still did well in school but by the time I got accepted to college you know. I changed completely once that happened. Was like forget our were in pajamas to school. You know what I mean. Bringing a pillow. Put Down the desk when the teacher started talking. Going to sleep laying on the table in the back. I became different leaving school early because it was done for me. I had my direction I want music and maybe somewhere else it was. It was my. Yeah exactly the same way. You talk about hockey. Yeah the second you made that full decision that you really knew what it was. You were chasing. Yeah everything else is just kind of in the way. Yes you know. They were like they were just. Just that's why I said it's high school was just slapping out of your way in. I mean they were. It was a slalom course in you slap around those those polls yeah yeah It was the exact same for me and That happened younger me but then my grade twelve my last year in school second half of the semester second semester like. I didn't go to school hardly at all. I had like one hundred and thirty absences. I just my teachers would be like I'd be like why am I coming to school? I'm not going to school next year. I'm trying to make pro hockey totally. Why do I need to be in this math? Clo- you want me to share another odd thing piece of information. Yeah apparently I had set the school record for tardiness. I don't believe it. I think you've definitely set the IHEART. Iheart podcast record for tardiness as well but you made it here today and whenever you show up you do show up. But he's so okay. We're going to get to take a break. We're getting into more questions. Get to know Gavin. Get to know brooks coming back after this is over. Twenty thousand lives changed over twenty years of.

"It's not that I can't come up with on. I'm trying to think of like some like when you enter a room. You meet every single person in that room. Yeah you always meet every person you introduce yourself to every single person you want every single person to feel included you meet them you are whenever you show up you always show up high energy thank you. I love that you're always and everybody in the room can tell you and you are too. You're an extremely kind and caring person. Thank you brother. Three a tough outer shell. But I- undeniably no. It's your heart that you're an extremely kind and caring person and people matter to you. Thank you You love people. Yeah you do. I know you do try to see the good in people. Yeah I really do and give everybody that benefited out of the doubt off the Bat. Yeah and I even let them be addict for the first couple of minutes if they need to be. You know what I mean to get past that first moment nor to Mia and I think it's important to kind of give people that you know just a little grace period a little grace period because some people are just a little bit more awkward than other people at first you and I I try to give them a little bit of that leeway you know because not everybody is warm at first You know Sometimes I could be like a little bit socially aggressive. Or Hey what's up? Good to meet you. Ma'am of a blunt. Some people like this puts up with Mr Social you know so I understand that too so I get I. Give them a little leeway Would that to you know yet. Gotcha okay so we are going to get into gets it. Oh Gavin get to know brooks a little fireside chat.

By the way I like your sweater today. I knew talking about fashion before on what that is looks simple but a good take on simple highly. Recommend this brand. It's called bricks brand sweaters coming out. Maybe that's my nuclear. A new thing called Brooks brand sweaters. It's actually a noble sweater noble noble an OB U. L. L. and to everyone comments on this Tori commented on the sweater. When I shouldn't I saw yeah very nice brandon. Everything there is a difference. Here Nice I'm just trying to keep a large. That may okay. Just trying to keep up with you man. You got voted as you taste you. Atoms voted you recently as like more fashionable than no. No I got dissed Danielle dismay and who is like. I don't like scarves. I'll think it's cold out now. That's was dope. That was thank you very much Do the straight and that scarf was just not making you warm. Selma's point of it. It was making me warm. There's an accessory piece. Of course it was like a cloth he was. He was accessorized. What what if I had to drive my hands in the bathroom and I don't want get steph into bathroom very practical. It's right where that scarf travel with hand towels. That's what I say here you go. You know what we're GONNA do today. Buddy I guess the answer we're GONNA have by the way. We're going to have a fireside chat today. It's a good idea. Yeah side and what's going to happen is Torii has a bunch of questions and so this is like a get to know Gavin. Get to know Brooks Type Day. Can I say something for continue? Yes Sir it is a podcast. I'm not a gas fireplace fan. Just in general I like the crackle of woodfire odd smell. I never by talking about the environment stuff I get it. I understand. But if the thing doesn't crackle and move it's not really fire I get you. I agree at our Lake House. We have multiple fireplaces and we just feed would into those man those are the right. It just makes a wholesale. That's smell is my favorite sent in the best the best. I love carcinogens. So anyway that being that little tangent being said we're going to do get to know Gavin today. Our viewers our listeners. One they WANNA know who Gavin to grise. Oh boy you know what I wanted to get him to grow. We're going to try and figure that out. So can you ever figure that out? I think it ever changes with him. One word you would use to describe Gavin would use three shock and awe. I was literally just saying this. We're having lunch. Downstairs Gavin legs to hit people at the shock and awe because the people look at them for a second in any like each holds it and then he furthers his and you can always see like a perplexing on the face grow. It's like a little shock and awe. So that's how I would. I would describe gaffe thanks. Yeah but they'd also very profound very deep Gavin. How would you describe on Brooks thoughtful? Who kind and it ventures My man feel like like he gave me a better review. Like I feel like my review didn't do him justice. I don't need to be done justice. What is one thing you wish you had? "Friends with Gavin. Let's one thing I don't want my the kids know about me. I'll tell you all the stuff you guys they want you to know. I mean to be honest I think probably looking back on like smoking weed or you know doing doing even a doing a drug or to I mean I'm ashamed of that. I would be ashamed of that. 'cause I mean I'm spending a lot of time right now my son's at a pivotal age. Where he's either getting introduced to that or whatever the case may be in? It's like no don't do that or you know. Be careful about this and and I was going through the same time but I was I'm made the you know I tried it. You know so it's like that part is I'm ashamed of. I mean I know he's going to do it so it's it's it is what it is is in. He's at some point going to make his own decisions I can't look back on my life where I'm like. Oh I totally regret this. I would never never tell my kids. You know they make you straight too much but I have a question. Are you going to take kids not to do any of it. Just certain lines because do you think that there's a certain line. That's sort of permissible. Because if you drop to too much of a hammer on them are you afraid. They're gonNA overdo when they finally something within wrong totally. I'm afraid of it all and I'm I'm pretty liberal in terms of having those conversations and being open about Experimenting with things you know I. I've come to kind of the reality that he's they're going to try it so I think it's more of like what are your decisions after you try. Try it right. Are you GONNA get in a car or you're gonNA let your friend get in a car are you gonNA. What are you going to do and I think those are the those are the concerns concerns that I have and in that would be the I mean? I'm not going to drop the hammer. I mean really kind of depends on what the what the scenario is right right. Mitri what what what I don't want my kids to know about me. Is the things that the the emotion things that make me selfish when I shouldn't be so for example if I'm talking them into sleep and I'm so tired and one of them just start telling the story and they have every right to tell that story but.

"In what fight are you on go ahead get to the other side the other side of it. Is You get the people that are wearing. Maybe the yoga pants that it shouldn't be or the people that aren't wearing a bra that maybe should be like. Maybe no I think good I like that. Why shouldn't they be they? They shouldn't be maybe it's an expression of freedom. See I have no problem with it I I actually I actually can find it sexy. Hey Listen FM obviously you see we all have different tastes but if you're attracted to the body and you see a certain thing when they're not wearing of course you're gonNA. Wow Oh my God how is worried about you. Know Twenty the the Bra unlike maybe in the fifties or the Bra was like just to hold the boobs now. It's part of fashion so like tonight. I'm wearing a Bra. I'm wearing a shirt right now but later tonight when we all go out I'm GONNA take the shirt off because the bras opposed the BRA. You opposed to show and bras have become much more. Like cute and fashionable like a fashion statement than just serving the purpose baton. Both both can be extremely sexy. Picking The let's go or rick you know that's a holy this is like a twenty parkway driving Let's go. Why do men always drive when a couple is in the car? The man is always driving. Why what if your wife girlfriend girlfriend wanted to drive? I watched one hundred cars go by Lake Tahoe and it was a couple in front of a man was driving and and if it was a couple it was the man driving ninety five percent of the time do men. I think they are better drivers than women. One of those cars and Tahoe's Gavin and I and he was driving Wait a minute do men think. Why do men always Dr Rick Doc? I don't know the answer to that question but I just went on a road trip with my family and I drove the entire time and my wife was like. Hey do you wanna drive on mcnabb I got it. It's all good like for some reason. Listen I just feel more comfortable and more in control of the car when I'm driving instead of versus her even though she's a driver but Dmitri we all know they're just just horrible drivers right boy. We're going to get some hate mail this decade. I'm riding one right now I think I drive most. Oh so the timer all the time But it's not like that's just the way it is. I think maybe my wife doesn't WANNA drive. I will say this I was dating a girl time and I was like. Oh do you WANNA drive. And she's like what and I was like. Did you WANNA drive like this is shortly after college. And she's like I've never been around a guy that didn't want to drive and I was like I don't know maybe I was. I think I said I don't feel the job and I was like maybe you should go back and date the guys that you did it before. Like who cares like I didn't feel like driving acid. Do you want to drive like I don't care I do most of the driving I think but it's shouldn't think maybe my wife doesn't want to drive and that's why it happens. Gav I prefer doing the driving. I love to drive. I get a thrill from driving. What is the thrill? It's here unpack that or the other option. Is your dog driving. I like gambling with my life. Now I love to drive. I just enjoyed okay. The act of driving at truly get a kick out of it. Yeah I like the joy of driving but I also like does nothing to do with a man or a woman driving just I. Sometimes when I'm not driving I don't always always feel safe and so I'm always the one that's putting my foot down here you know when there's a break or if I'm in the back on my shoes driver and it's just I mean unless I know the person well enough where where AM I. Okay Yeah Gavin your your driver. We've driven a lot together. Yeah I get it you let your wife drive like do you think she is a good driver. Totally actually sometimes sometimes fun to like. I would probably drive ninety five percent of the time too but it's actually sometimes fun. It's like a novelty when my wife drives me I get to like just chill and run tunes and look around and I'm like this is awesome. I do understand as a woman I drive ninety five percent of the time but when I am in a car with like a boyfriend there there is something charming about them driving. Like I get that. And you're sort of the it's it's very feminine and masculine than he comes around and opens the door awards exchange.

"All the all right. Chris my opportunity Win I hate reading in public. How do you like like your eggs frozen? Sorry that's for you Gavin. You're running out to get US breakfast. GOT ANYBODY WANNA I. Answer this for me Let me ask Brooks how do you like your eggs. Traditionally scrambled but like the last two months of switched to easy over because I rambled my entire life. It's on Oh my I just want to try and you're like I'm GONNA get crazy. Yeah going wild with some easy overs. Is it because you like your wrist hurt over easily over easy for easy over into do it and I don't I don't cook over. Sounds like some some fishing gear like fly-fishing Pants and I. I don't think I can cook them that way. That's why I just scrambled eggs. Because I'm not a very cook and I'm not a good customer. I had some scrambled eggs today But when I eat it like a restaurant yeah I want to ease over easy overseas. I go scramble if I'm in a short if I don't have much time if I have time I go poached. I love poached eggs and I like cooking. There's a whole science to you got to be in the water. You gotTA throw a little vinegar in there and then you gotTa Watch them and time it and Hokum and Zora science looking forward to Brunch and science didn't school it's a very Bucci answer. I'd like my eggs over medium. A very specific did you say rick's As was boozy the same guy. That said one hundred grand isn't a lot guys. I like my eggs poached but I mean those are all pretty fundamental answers. Does anybody here not prefer like waivers Ranchera because those are pretty damn good okay. Yeah but it didn't make breakfast and said okay. You're right bricks got a question okay. San Everybody kept it real simple question about eggs. I wasn't gonNA go super deep on it next question. How happy are you on a scale of one to ten and one reason why are you are why you are where you are on the scale? How happy are you on a scale of one to ten go? Rick I mean this second. Let's see happy. Actually you know what going into this year. I've been really happy I've been. I've probably give myself about a seven. Okay here's here's a rule for this. You cannot on a one to ten scale. There's a rule for anything on a one to ten. You can't pick a seven because six is like everybody goes seven. It's the same way six is like I'm not doing so good eight. I'm doing really good the safe spot the safe play. The Vanilla play is a seven seven's or out you cannot pick seven so on a scale from through ten yes come on no sevens rick That makes that makes eight the new seven. I found it interesting that he said I'm I've I've been really happy. A seven like seven doesn't sound ten ten is like I mean I don't know I don't know screw Brooks Brooks..

I could write out some equations of how I think you'll answer certain questions and see a right right. I was going to be honest. That doesn't sound like a fun Gavin to me boring so I say children so the agree voice that you hear we have Demetri in in house with us. Dimitrios up brother how you doing fantastic. We missed you in the last two episodes. This is your first new or first podcast decades coming out of the gate a little late. But I'm ready to go ready and strong and we also got rick in studio what's up Ari go back. I want to acknowledge that always flying down from Oakland. Hey thank you I actually get the email but I just don't read it. Oh Damn I've kind of fly off the handle can yeah. I'd take prepared over unprepared. I think he's a wants to be you. Like Gavin. You know the reality is they. They didn't WANNA pay eight dollars for the Wi fi on the southwest. That's why I didn't get the email so I don't know it's unscripted. Perfect it's perfect. This today is unscripted so today. We're going to have a lot of fun. We're doing a member like as a kid you'd throw stuff in a hat and pull a drop of a hat or if you still do it. We're doing that with questions today. Oh so we we always said we started this podcast and we always said our mission. Here's to be real on authentic and genuine and open and vulnerable all that kind of stuff And so we piled together a bunch of listener questions that you guys have sent in for us. Amy has chopped them all up. Put them in a hat and we're gonNA pull from a hat and amy's going introduces but this is what we're GONNA do. We want to answer your questions and I'm challenging. All three of you gentlemen and amy will probably chime in on this to to really early. Go at this because our mission is to serve our list serve our audience and to share how men think and how we approach things so I'm challenging all of you guys in twenty twenty. I want to level up this podcast. Gavin's already laughing your buddy jo easier so you don't tell the honest story. We're GONNA get Joey. 'cause I know Joey knows the real story I agree with you. Guys need to be more honest. More vulnerable vulnerable. Sorry hell us like it is because sometimes I think you guys are a little bit too nice a little bit to vanilla a little bit too safe bring it good and freedom. Nil is fine flavor. Okay favorite flavor. Is there an alternate hat. That also has all the answers that we could just jaw. SNAP at random. Okay here's my. Here's what we do. Danielle Tori and I worked all week.
