Is the federal government to blame for wildfires gone out of control?

"Fires on the West Coast are burning across an incredible amount of land burning added incredible scale smoke has dimmed the son in cities as far as two thousand miles away. Dozens of people have lost their lives many more have lost their belongings and their homes. The scale, the intensity and the frequency of wildfires have grown more alarming in recent years. It's clear according to fire experts that the US needs a new strategy to cope with his escalating threat. But exactly what that strategy should be is tricky to figure out. President trump has said forest management is the single solution to combating fires out West. Fall down after. A short period of time about eighteen months they become very dry they become really like a matchstick. And they get up, you know there's no more water pouring through and they become very very They explode they could explode also leaves when you have years of leaves dried leaves on the ground it just sets it up. It's really a fuel for a fire. So they have to do something about it they all he's repeatedly shrugged off warnings that human caused climate change contributes turning western states into tinder boxes. Trump's view is contrary to scientific consensus on this issue. The president's rhetoric seems to reflect a lack of agreement at the federal level around how to solve this fire problem. But how much does trump's refusal to acknowledge manmade climate change affect the country's wildfire management and response plans for that matter how much a forest management falls on the state versus the federal government? Ultimately who's responsible for preventing these wildfires from burning out of control? This is, can he do that a podcast that explores the powers and limitations of the American presidency I'm Alison Michael's A need from the states from the federal government in terms of recovery is going to continue to stack up. That's in Kim White House reporter at the Washington Post. She's been closely covering trump's response to the wildfires. Later in the show, I talked to a fire in climate expert about where responsibility lies for fire mitigation and disaster response but I I turned to sung men to explain how the president's rhetoric and Fit into the West Coast ongoing crisis. It's a devastating situation out west. There are millions of acres of that have been burned. It's about ten states out west, but it's really concentrated in California Oregon and Washington State. You have dozens of deaths and we'll be saw on the presidential front. was that President, trump traveled to California on Monday as part of a campaign swing he stopped in Sacramento to get a briefing. On these fires, it was the first time. He had really used the power of the office to bring attention to these wildfires where he had been pretty quiet on the issue until that. Yeah and this isn't the first big wildfire that's happened during the trump administration has his response been similar this time to what we've heard from him before in two, thousand, eighteen or twenty nineteen. It definitely has me on the overall issue of president trump and climate change. He has repeatedly cast doubt on the scientific consensus of man-made Climate Change and he also dismisses it in relation to these wildfires. My colleagues at the posts of obviously talked to so many experts say it is absolutely clear that hyman change is really aggravating these fires creating these conditions. Where these fires can just really get out of control quickly. But the president has repeatedly not just with these latest round of wildfires this time around. But in previous years throughout his presidency blamed forest management, he says, the mismanage forest are the main cause of why these fires are blowing out of control. Now, there is a little bit of truth to that. From the experts that we've talked to and even Governor Gavin newsom of California acknowledged that it has briefing with the President and Sacramento on. Monday, that is clearly not the whole story but trump and his typical trumpian fashion has referred to exploding trees and conversations with unnamed foreign leader saying, well, we take care of our trees so we don't have that problem. In our country and that's been where the president has been casting the blame.

"A very weird day when it comes to PAC twelve football future of it got earlier this morning, the big ten announced they're coming back. They're coming back on October twenty third they they're confident that with their testing and the way that college football has kind of gone over the past couple of weeks at other schools that they can safely bring kids back now you and I both gone on record saying, we don't think it's the smartest thing in the world to play college football. So I'm not saying that I want college football to come back I don't. US He really wants to play their players. All wrote a letter to Gavin Newsom but here's why I'm bringing this up the big ten and outs were coming back Larry Scott the commissioner of the pack twelve immediately she's a statement that says because of the governor's guidelines we are not allowed to practice in the state of California which means USC Ucla Stanford and cal all would be unable to practice about an hour later Gavin newsom the governor California was doing a press conference and he was asked is that true that you won't allow those teams to practice? Here's part of what newsome hadn't his answer quote. I WanNa make this crystal clear. Nothing in the state guidelines denied the ability for the PAC twelve to resume quite to the contrary. This has been a misrepresentation of the facts and quote. What is Larry Scott and the PAC twelve referencing when they say. They can't play because of NEWSOM and NEWSOM says, it's not true who's telling the truth here newsome. Governor ain't Lion Larry Scott I. I've never been a fan of I think he could screw up a ham sandwich. But I but I do think that newsome is telling the truth and I think we're at the point John Now with the big ten resuming along with the SEC in the big twelve and the ACC, I think it is time for the PAC twelve to seriously consider resume or starting the season starting it earlier. They've got access to this rapid testing program. They're able to test players in in very short order really quick tests. I don't see any reason why the PAC twelve shouldn't be playing right now the. Monroe. Saint Brown Graham Harrell Bunch of USC. People have tweeted this letter out basically to goose to newsom saying, please let us play and newsom saying, no, you're you're allowed to play. It's it's up to your it's up to your athletic directors. It's up to your chancellor's I. Think it's time to have a vote among twelve PAC twelve schools and get a season started.

"Okay back to the beaches. So Orange County decided. They weren't going to close their beaches but then the governor stepped in. Why did he feel the need to do that? This is actually the second time he's done this. And it's all Orange County's foucault twice. Everyone got serious and California March sixteenth. That's when Newsom said okay. This is what we're GONNA DO GARCETTI whatnot. So what do people do that weekend? They all flocked to the beach so I remember turning on locally here the NBC affiliate Huntington Beach Packed with people absolutely packed with people in March. Yeah this is March. Yeah it's like the weekend of March Twenty First Newsom saw that. Garcetti saw that newsome's like nope. We're GONNA start shutting down the parking lots for state beaches and that's exactly what happened to like sort of tell people to stay away. Then though California went through about a month of gloomy weather so it was raining like it was a unseasonably large Raynham out for this time of year in California. So people mostly stayed home. There was no problem. The Problem Gustavo says started two weekends ago. That's when the weather began to clear up and once again people started going back to the beach. Maybe you saw some of the images on twitter. Newsom sees photos again. Of course he gets angry like no. I'm GONNA shut down the beaches at first. He he wanted to shut down all the beaches in California but then he decided to just shut down Orange County and that's where the real anger came out. Even look so you think it was kind of petty of him. Oh petty punitive at the end. It was punitive some like he got so Wang because remember. This was the second time this happened. Orange County the first time was in mid March and the march sixteenth. Two weekend are rather march. Twenty first weekend where you saw these people in Orange County walk into the Beach. Now you have a second time. It's how you say it in Spanish Reagan. Yondo an English. You would say school. That's what it is. A new some came off as a school. No one wants to be seen as a scored. You WanNa be seen as authoritative coming off as a school. There's just like dude. What's your issue? Man Like started started slip into coastal orange county lingo but literally. That's what when that happened. I'm like Oh man you're you do not know what you just did Newsom does new somehow beef with the. Oc personal beef. Yes I got. It is civil war between Sacramento and Orange County so when new some decided to shut down the beaches the city of Huntington Beach and the city of Dana Point sued the state of California ever since then now The city of Newport beach is trying to sue the state and federal corporate. This was at St Court when it came to Newsom so there is emnity. There is just absolute loathing for new some from the more conservative elements of of of Orange County. In fact that's what they're calling him down the Republican Party here in Orange County King Gavin King newsom. I heard another name for him. Which was someone like rented? A small plane flew over the beach and they were calling him. Gruesome newsom okay. That's funny. That is funny but yeah I mean they're overreacting. Is it tyranny? No is that punitive absolutely. There has to be that middle ground. I mean really. Lisa Bartlett seems to be that middle ground of saying. Hey what you're doing to us is wrong but there has to be another way and let let's have a conversation about it but of course then. That's why you started. See like you saw. What was the estimate in Huntington beach protests like two thousand three thousand people and again not all of them were locals but the locals of course supported it but then that becomes that flashpoint for the people who are tired of these stay at home ordinance or edicts by new some and other people across Southern California. Of course they gonNA flock there. I mean I was reading some protesters who talked to the media and said that these gatherings at the beaches they reminded them of the early days of the tea party movement. Does that make sense to you? The only thing I would say is that there doesn't seem to be At least yet it doesn't seem to be Like movement going forward from this there was barely any protests there hasn't been many protests week like if it really was a movement people would be protesting more and more and more the anger is definitely there though and this is where it's this is where it really gets interesting in. Orange County because the Republican Party in Orange County this year. They're going to have to play catch up like they definitely wounded dog in a corner wolfing a corner and the ready last shot but they really had no. They're they're just yet. The Democrats are they are now outnumbering. Republicans at least in the official voter registration drives they had a trump. Of course. Who knows what's going to happen. Nationally but locally you know trump was not very popular again. He Lost Twenty Sixteen. But with this issue Governor Newsom shutting down the Orange County beaches and only the orange county beaches now. The Republican Party is vitalized. And the way I have not seen it in like Jeez in years like not even two thousand sixteen or twenty eighteen and so they're going to try to ride this issue all the way to election day governor like newsome is doing this balancing act. He can see that if he doesn't start opening the state back up again especially those beaches. His political opponents will have a pretty potent weapon to use against him but if he does open the beaches and people get sick. He could get the blame for that to which may be why earlier this week. Governor NEWSOM announced baby steps towards opening those beaches. Back up again. He is feeling the pressure it. Because you see this like the cases aren't going down the trump administration just said hey remember when we said forty to sixty thousand people are GONNA die. Well now we think it's probably going to be a hundred thousand so this current. Iris is not going anywhere. But you also cannot keep people at home without now. You can't keep them at home period. I mean you could give them a universal basic income but people want to go out people. WanNa go back to how it was. Even though it's not going to so new some I think is just saying okay. That's what he's doing. His staggered rollout. Where this I know? It's going to be the second phase now like you have bookstores and clothing boutiques and most businesses. Basically you can open but you can only have curbside service which is kind of weird. I don't know how that's GonNa work out but people are not gonNA take it even in Orange County so in San Clemente this past week and you had a restaurant that just opened they said okay. Yeah we're going to do social distancing. Yeah no we're not going to and so Local news they've been like showing Patios packed inside packed the county health officials. They've gone down there to check and see and tell them like. Hey you're not supposed to do this. But they're not really trying to enforce anything will new some even more punitive because of that. We'll see but again. No one envies newsom right now. Let's put it that way. Yeah I mean listening to you talk. It feels like it's a damn that's about to break. You know I mean there have been reports of counties like Murdoch County which is a rural county. That's basically just said we're not going to be doing this anymore. We're not going to be doing this. Stay at home order anymore and I read one piece of analysis that said listen. The bigger threat. Isn't these protesters. It's politicians basically pushing back on new Simmons saying we're not going to implement what you're telling us to do at the that's a long game of course with politicians. Yeah Mode Rock County all the way. All the way up in northern California very rural hasn't had a single case and the new hearing this so because if he really was a king he would say no. Everyone goes on my schedule. So he's as what he's saying and what people are mocking him for his like data. I'm seeing the data. So He's acknowledging okay rural counties you could be on a or other places that have a certain policy or plan to get out of this. You have more leeway than say Los Angeles or San Francisco or Santa Clara County. Where San Jose is Gopher? But you're also damned if you do and you're damned if you don't have you seen more fatalities come out of this and you see that huge Like a second wave happened. Will people blame some tell them? Hey you opened up too early or will they go. After troub- it remains to be seen. It's GonNa be interesting.

"The reason Gustavo's he's Orange County as this weather for the rest of the country is that it contains conflicting political forces all bound up tightly together for years. Orange County was known as a Republican stronghold and some ways it maintains a strong Republican flavor but during the two thousand eighteen midterms. The county flipped blue making national headlines so here. Democrats are ascendant. But they're still finding their way and then when the krona virus hit these liberal and Conservative politicians. They all to work together. Okay I want to go back to April. Just sort of explain how fraught the decision to close the beaches in Orange County was because I went back and I watched this meeting of the Board of supervisors and Orange County and one of these guys. She says to the group listen. A heatwave is coming. We know that the beaches are going to be slammed. And we know that the beaches all around us are going to be shut down so people are going to come from other places here. That's a bad idea. We just we need to shut them down. What do you think happened? But they weren't shutdown. Of course yeah. You're you're referring to Lisa Bartlett. Lisa Bartlett is one of. She's bore South Orange County so she represents some of these cities like Laguna Beach. Down in Dana Point. She's a Republican. In fact four fifths of the board. There's five supervisors in Orange County. One of them's a democrat. A basically a moderate others are maybe not Trumpian Republicans will one or two of them are but Lee Bartlett's more moderate People even Democrats in Orange County. They respect her especially for her issues on trying to deal with the homelessness which is another huge topic Orange County so she got it but although the way she put it also you could tell a little bit of the provincialism in Orange County because the beaches in La County and San Diego County. We're going to be close. So what she's saying is We're GONNA have the rest of the world coming into Orange County. We gotTA keep those people out. We gotta just leave it for locals. And of course she was overruled. The the Board of supervisors. Now let's have the whole world. Come if they want well. It's funny because like her motion didn't even get a second like no one. No one would consider it. All the other supervisors just were like. Yeah no we're not GONNA do that. No I mean because they've been chafing the thing with Orange County. Although now nationally people say oh yeah. It's Blue Orange county's blue now. No no seventy five percent of elected positions in Orange County are still republicans. It's interesting listening to you because I'm thinking of like a tree where what you're saying is like the Republican Party in Orange County has these deep roots and in the midterm elections. The Democrats were may be able to like chop some of the branches off of the tree. But there's still roots there it can still grow back. Oh did that You know you use botany. I use animals I use. The Republican Party is just like an angry dog a rabid dog. That's ready to bite back in like snarling ready to go after these democratic POPs. So you're saying it's like a delicate and people made something out of Orange County flipping blue but this is actually a pretty delicate flip it. Yes because you don't the Democrats don't have those routes like historically the only city that orange that the Democratic Party Orange County ever dominated was the city of Santa Ana which is one of the most Latino cities in the United States but other than that like those. The school boards. The water boards the city. Council's they're all still mostly majority Like Super Majority Republican Cross Orange.

"Kids how you guys doing with stay at homes. That is what now you have the real answer that last question four kids Katie. Handling we need to reopen the schools immediately. Please desperate right away. It saves it saves everything my my good days and my more challenging days it is. I'll tell you one thing. It does so boy. It sharpens. My appreciation for women For Mothers for caregivers for the disproportion amount of work women do in the household that is now even made more visible. And I think this mother's Day but it'd be the biggest mother's Day in history of mankind. How old are your kids now? The youngest just just turned four and still reminds me of the twos. You know what I mean. And we have the oldest is just ten and Homeschool A. Oh my gosh. The teachers talk about American Heroes Nurses doctors and the teachers it's hard just to have remarkable inability to want to be taught by their parents but a remarkable capacity by our teachers. And so that's why I say let's safely and responsibly reopen these schools. And I know that's something you're thinking about but there's a lot that will go into that and a lot of folks are debating whether schools should open this summer because they have to make up for lost time. And that's something you're looking into his well well. This learning losses real. It's real every summer. Summer believed particularly from a socio economic disproportionately bags black and Brown communities. And we've never addressed that in a meaningful way. By the way this has been exposed with distance learning and wi fi capacity the ability for a family with many kids to have more than just even one tablet or have one tablet on a alone and all of that of course is made more problematic as we move through this pandemic and so we're talking about opening. Potentially I know summer schools upon US quickly but we are considering opening up the school year a little bit earlier late July early August to see if we can make up for that gives us a little more time on the summer school to more safely plan physical and environmental planning but then would provide us. The opportunity may be make up for some of that. Learning law sewer. We're having deep conversations. That's a big scale operation. Six million kids in California so we can do it. I think others can as well. But it's a it's a big Herculean effort. Avenue Gavin NEWSOM.

"We're back with California. Governor Gavin newsom. This has been financially devastating for everyone including your state, and you have to have a balanced budget governor at something's gotTa. Give spending cuts. Tax increases the impact on schools on so many different social services. So what will California look like? In twenty twenty one given the rich from matic experience of of this pandemic. This time last year Katie, we were debating how to balance our budget with a twenty one point, four billion dollars surplus this time last year, a twenty one point, four billion dollar operating surplus I announced in January. My expectation for the next fiscal year that surplus would be roughly six billion. That was eight or so weeks ago. We are going to be announcing on Monday. Tens of billions of dollars in deficit, just like that the magnitude of this is jaw dropping, and it's much worse than respectfully I think people think because everytime new numbers come out jobless numbers. That's lagging. We have three point. Seven million Californians have filed for unemployment insurance just since March twelfth just since March Twelfth Not January twelfth March twelfth. We have to put this in perspective, and that's why understand boy do I? I understand the economic desire to start reopening, and that's that give and take. That's the struggle. This is the dialectic of our time, and there's a lot of Whitewater a Lotta friction. That's going to happen the next few months. It's been difficult today, but the next few months and years are going to be challenging so the answer to that Question California and twenty twenty one is not going to be very pretty. It's going to be more. Check. Look I I, think the state. Because of its size, it scope because the diversity of within the economy. The fact we were running twenty billion dollars surplus a couple years ago that we have historic reserves. We had forgive me, but we had our bond rating increased twice last year. Borrowing capacity is better than most states. And we have remarkable leaders in this state that continue to thrive despite this pandemic, particularly the tech community, and elsewhere we may do better than most, but the magnitude of these deficits is extraordinary, and my biggest fear is this. We better learn the lesson from twenty. Mini so many people have been recovered from the great recession low income workers. or their wages have been flat, and they're the most vulnerable in this pandemic, and so we really have to be I. think much more aggressive in addressing economic justice in addressing the framework of social justice as our number one priority. Let us not make the mistakes. We made of the bailouts the last time, not getting down to real people in diverse communities. That's our principal obligations. Meanwhile, it doesn't sound as. As, if Mitch McConnell is going to be much help, he doesn't want the federal government to help with the state or local level, and he in fact has said it's the state's fault for mismanaging money I know you've said that his his position as offensive, but without federal help. How are you going to manage to balance your budget? How are you going to manage the serve the people of California? You can imagine since he's been Republican leader every year. The devil sits have gotten bigger under his watch. Golly, that comment is to a state like California. Where are surpluses got bigger as his deficits got bigger in terms of mismanagement, and particularly to state that historically has been a huge donor state. To other red states, it is going, and and I think many governors. Point and so we have to balance our budgets. They don't but we'RE AMERICANS FORTY MILLION AMERICANS. Live in the state of California. It's not a blue state. It's an American States in the union twenty six of our. Fiftieth counties went for Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell's party in the last election To. and so I I hope they disabuse themselves of this notion. That we are all on our own. When we're many parts, but one body style United States of America, and when one part suffers, we all suffer. That's the spirit of the Commonwealth. That's the spirit of our founding fathers I think it'd be nice if Mitch McConnell others would read a little bit about our own history. The best better angels that define the best the American spirit, and it's this notion that we're all in this together. There's no league on your side of our boat. We need the federal government's help and support. How do you think president trump has handled this crisis overall? I believe that two more independent minds aware in the middle of this pandemic and I'm trying every single day to save lives I can only say this and I know people depending on their political stripes can get offended by it. I'm well aware of it. By the way involved in sixty eight lawsuits with trump administration, so there is you know we talk about California, the friction between the administration, the state second to no other state, but the interactions. We've had directly with the administration because they think they go back to January the level of engagement has been relatively favorable. I can't. Say, that can't be said rather for many other states, but it has been favorable for the state of California, so I can only speak from that prison on that perspective. Do you feel as if you have to mind your PS and QS and not criticize the administration too much governor less. You incurred the wrath of president. Trump is governor. Inslee did in Washington state. I mean there probably is a little of that, but you know what y'all camp makeup reasons to disagree and Finger. Point Man I? Look my by my decision. Every day is not to wake up with my fists clenched it's to have my hands. Open my heart open to. Opportunity and new ideas and support, and we'll take sport wherever we can get it. And I called me to forgive me, but give you a for instance. We've had a lot of questions in the aggregate about testing supplies. So rather than complaining about it, which I could have done got a lot of attention on all. The nightly shows I made a phone call and I asked the president directly. Answer the phone. Here's what I need and you know next day quite literally arrived. So that's that's the specific experience but again. I deeply recognized. That doesn't exist in other parts of the country working together as one thing, but now he's using you and one of his campaign reelection videos. How do you feel about that? I've been I've been in this a been an elected office for twenty plus years. I've I've seen plenty of things. Nothing surprises me. We're getting into an election season very shortly I'm doing an event for Joe. Biden my cat. We're in sixty eight lawsuits with the administration. Is what it is, but again one thing I'm not going to do. My mother taught me this I. Always raised. When you ask for something, and someone does something for you express appreciation and gratitude, and if you don't then you lose your character, little your own veracity. And I could play to. That I can play to the partisanship, but I got forty million Californians forty million Americans that deserve me. figure out way to do better and do more to get along in an engage in the spirit of collaboration without focusing on everything, just being politics. Have you endorsed Joe Biden for president yet? Yeah, we have a big event on on the eighth. Of this month, so we are very involved. And how do you feel about the way candidate vice? President Biden has been responding to this pandemic governor. What is he doing well, and should he be doing anything differently? Because many people are saying they need to see Joe. "Of BK governor Gavin Newsom calling California's homelessness crisis and disgrace in this morning state of the union speech president trump has been spending the day in the Central Valley wrapping up two days swing in here in California today was talking a water with farmers and two thirteen year olds been arrested and charged with setting a fire in a Porter ville library that killed two central California firefighters going in depth here now on the Democrats who will be taking the debate stage in Las Vegas momentarily this right before an event as caucus and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg will be on the debate stage for the first time this is Alex stone is there well yeah that's going to be a big change tonight Kerry that that you're having Bloomberg on stage up until this point he's been kind of the the teflon man they could bounce anything against them off because you only heard what he wanted you to hear or the four hundred billion dollars in advertising that that he was putting out there but the other candidates were able to debate him and go head to head with them they had been pushing for this change there is a change in the rules made to allow Bloomberg and tonight up until now there's been a requirement for donor funding coming in but Bloomberg is finding his own campaign to until now he has been able to make the debate really you for him there's a lot he could lose tonight that day because he hasn't had a answer those questions he's been seen with his number is rising is profile rising it kind of among some Democrats is guy who could come in and and take on trump if he doesn't do well tonight then he could does really exposed himself or if he does do well tonight you can continue to see those numbers go up so there's a lot at stake for him the other candidates though they want to go head to head with him as his profile is rising they want to take him on on a number of different topics I would think so Alex because there's been a lot of back and forth between the candidates as it has ban and now with Bloomberg in there I expect to the Big Island well and they're likely to try because they they all need to finances will be a big part of that we've already heard from war and that she says he has an ego maniac billionaire standards are you know in his wheel house talking about campaign funding and big money coming into it that he won't take money from billionaires and yours is billion around the state by the way one billion error is coming in one billion error is going out Tom sire will not be on stage tonight he also was spent hundreds of millions dollars in funds for advertising but he did not qualify for tonight but Bloomberg and likely from Biden Biden seeing his numbers going down the the Biden need said to try to shine tonight good to make sure he's not spotlight as well you've already said part of his attack on Bloomberg is gonna be the Bloomberg is essentially Republican and it's always been a Republican so you'll probably hear that tonight as well but yeah whether be about that money coming in or past comments Bloomberg is made about the LGBTQ community or race issues with a stop and frisk in New York all of that on the table tonight with the candidates and Bloomberg not participating in the caucuses on Saturday right no he is not he did not qualify for the because of his late entry and everything the caucuses here or the primary in South Carolina but been coming into super Tuesday that's when he will be on the ballot okay ABC's Alex stone there reporting from Vegas thank you so much you got it thank you to all right and five fifty traffic.

"California has been a leader in environmental and energy policy for half a century now. The State is at war with the trump administration over its fuel emission standards. The strictest in the nation California has also been hit hard by climate change wildfires fires in northern California last year killed more than eighty people and leveled fourteen thousand homes recent years have brought more fires more extreme heat days and historic drought route for our climate tech series. How we survive. I talked to California Governor Gavin Newsom and I asked him if he sees the tech industry is having a role in helping communities adapt apt and prevent more disasters. It's hand in hand in California because it affects climate change our year. They're real just consider that since two thousand fifteen in ten of the most destructive wildfire seasons have occurred obviously we need to do more to protect those communities from the ravages of the hotz getting odd on the drive getting drier one billion dollars by the way we put in this budget additional resources to invest including suppression strategies early. Detection Shen strategies new infrared cameras new technology lighter technology new satellite technology. All of these things are part and parcel of our our frame of engagement. It sounds to me not to be bloodless but it sounds like you are describing a market for new technologies that right now venture capitalists aren't funding because they feel burned by what happened ten years ago with green tax. You know not only describing the opportunities for new investment also coming up with new kermit strategies to test as those technologies in real time rather than going through these processes of our the state defining what we need. We're defining the problem or letting the private sector and tech leaders define the solutions including by the way doing an x prize to address the issue of early detection and suppression strategies be that drone technologies be the ability utilize is open source satellite imagery and data. All of those are technology opportunities where the private sector venture capital rightfully should invest. I mix some money by doing the right things and do it quickly. I feel like the legacy of Silicon Valley is to want to solve big problems and so so there is a sense I think in the valley and maybe it's just me that these guys should engage on climate change the doing it directly through philanthropy a lot more our than they are perhaps through the corporate board and number two. They're doing in the most profound way and forgive me. Transportation Autonomy Foundationally Dacian Lee is going to change the trajectory of this debate electric vehicle technologies and alternative fuel technologies which will dominate and proliferate in the next few decades decades that perhaps will be the most significant contribution tech will ever make in some ways. I'm not pessimistic. I'm deeply optimistic because of the investments in our in D. and the progress and technology already seen how big a deal then is the shift to electric for those carmakers and for this movement overall. I there's not one automobile automobile manufacturer. That doesn't understand where we're going and they're making investments today. For Twenty twenty-five Twenty thirty and it's exciting they see where the arrest the markets internationally are going they see their growth will reside and they recognize that consumer choices changing and they wanna meat consumers where they are they want to reduce use costs which ultimately is at the pump and they want to meat consumers with the latest technology and that means innovation electric took vehicles but also broadly defined alternative fuel vehicles but EV's are the the game changer. The cost of batteries are dropping significantly. The technologies from arranged perspective are advancing look it took US twenty years to sell the first million electric vehicles. It took less than twenty months to sell the second million. this is is sort of. I don't want to argue. It's Moore's law but you're going to see some exponential. application and distribution scale of the sales of electric took vehicles in the next decade that I think will really shock those that art scene the contours of this online today. What are the things that only government can tale. I mean policy. It's only me we set the rules regulation. We incentivize good behavior disincentivize bad behavior we create markets and in private sector either response to that gets run over and I really am proud of California in its ethos it's values that transcend last five or six administrations astray shins and we gotta keep that going because of the Ecstasy Stencil threat that is this new reality of climate a huge driver of that innovative spirit is here in California and Silicon Valley and you're very familiar with the tech industry on a lot of friends having come from the bay area. How do you see your relationship with. I guess what we're now calling big tech. I've I've known these a lot of these folks when they were little tech seen them grown a big tech both individuals and got another the company's more broadly defined individuals come and go the companies. It's persist and I've seen lighting leadership. I've seen very self centered honored leadership I've seen empathy and I've seen a deep lack of empathy. There's an deep empathy gap with some sectors of tech and so I've seen the the best in in the worst up close and not just as a California resident not just proximate as a fifth generation San Franciscan a living in the bay area but as someone that quite literally has grown up with a number of these people that are sort of well known brands in the tech world since you have known the tech industry since they were little tech and you really do have these personal relationships. Do you feel like you have an opportunity in your role as sort of governor and also friends of the industry sometimes to to push them in the answer's yes but I gotta say behind the scenes I can you know you go google or someplace like that and there's a lot of exciting enlivening things that are in the leading cutting edge that are in their dormancy right now and then are going to be made visible in ways that I think could give people circum- their nerves nerve that the tech industry is not quote unquote doing enough but I will say on the philanthropic side at least without exception the thrust of most of the investments most of these major founders are focused on is in the space. I just had as an example the privilege of sitting down with Bill Gates in the entire purpose of the conversation station was his doubling down on his commitment in the climate change space and he's doing it through his philanthropic arm to create market incentives take a business mindset to making the kind of green tech investments without worrying about the Roi but investing in an entrepreneurial mindset to solving having some of these problems so I'm just I'm seeing a lot more That gives me a lot more confidence. that that the tech industry including on drawdown technologies carbon drawdown technologies is a lot for the loan than many of us may actually believe yeah. I mean how important is energy. Batteries are the whole ballgame yeah in electric vehicles and otherwise but also sort of energy independence this idea of decentralisation as a resilient strategy really what we're about to announce that we've invested in actually installed our millionth solar roof doc about that dis intermediation this sort of notion of disaggregation disaggregation and distributed energy and so the way we can scale at the next level is doing two things implement the new rules and standards at all new construction action will require solar in the roof by January first two thousand twenty and number two make sure we have adequate storage and meet the technology call to WHO provide that storage at the kind of scale. That's needed ultimately radically reimagined our grid so California's again from a policy perspective is is creating the market incentives for companies to invest in that space. I don't know that most folks are familiar with this but we have five times more green clean energy jobs in California than fossil fuel jobs five to one and we're one of the most dominant fossil fuel economies in America California and five to one We are outperforming the fossil fuel industry so you know the old adage fresh air progress versus a stale stale air of normalcy. we see the future and we want to do well there which means you got to invest in. The future. Trump sees the past and he's not interested investing in the future. He is not going to very well. They're Gavin newsom is the governor of California.

"L in their history it just connected mendosa but it connected with just there's a sense of intensity and passion for their story in their perseverance their faith their loved their devotion to each other and their 'cause that just inspired me and inspires the why and should inspire anyone because we have a marqaba capacity in life if we have the courage to express ourselves i'm talking to you rule the alright of this man yeah pres is your world replenish the whole thing ever ins it's now we don't have to be pollyannish about this but the capacity of the whole village village pollyanna as a good point so people but no it's just when i talk about that not dia rettig dialectic it's yes for shen between people in positions of power in those outside in its that pressure we put on people in political office that is the change people in political office they don't change merit you talk about the democratic party ago who were my biggest critic won the damn republican party it was democrats that were criticizing me outraged offended i got kicked off his supposed to speak at the convention in boston they said see you later told me not even to come to boston i started doing samesex marriages and it took it wasn't in two thousand five and six one like they were running cavalry i mean no one was supporting all lost our way in a sense as the party lines and that's a big problem in this video by the way they didn't support it because of power they're worried about their power about their election right that's why people don't do this because they know that they know that yes you believe some say some don't be an ideologue be open argument but if you believe some stand up and do something and that's that i think ultimately is the way we get folks reengaged yeah we got more with gas lieutenant governor gavin newsom in a minute now i just said gavin newsom that's the correct wake my brain does this year i wanna say newson tommy newson from the tonight show then yeah new saggy go you want to get a newson that's right this gavin newsom maga yes he's running for governor when sung in new year you love that sir yeah we're going to win this.

"Hey michelle we've got a special guest here gavin newsom is the lieutenant governor of california running for governor again why are you in politics why do you want to do that what do that i mean it's easy job i know but i'm sorry strive democrat you forget about him because he was the kennedy sarge gaba sorry i am i know i know you rider but remember sars strivers on who you know was never held elected office yeah probably had more impact on the twentieth century than anyone who has ever in elected office started the peace corps legal aid to the poor head start he was the one that led the war on poverty and sixty four to sixty eight and we actually pulled one out of three people add up already and of course he and his wife founded the special olympics in that sense of idealism in the sixties yeah of standing up for ideals striking out against injustice is why now what is it okay now obviously sarge shriver in the kennedys or very wealthy people what is it that made wealthy people they don't do that anymore these days so much decide to be of public service like that because there was no bility in public service it was about recognizing there's no leak on your side of our boat right we rise and fall together you can't live good life aristotle said in an unjust society and i think people recognize the commonwealth they recognized are fundamental sort of interdependence you know in that sloshed in our politics today it's sort of a scarcity framework there was a framework of abundance back then yeah that and now it's i got mine yeah because people are fearful and they're just holding onto their patch their piece of the pie and that's our politics polarization in it's obviously hyper acute now more than ever and more than enough i mean i think that everybody has the reason to be afraid right now specially in the climate that we're in it's frightening ned had you being a longtime advocate availed ubt q i plus community.
