Snake Island may be tiny, but it is a powerful symbol of resistance for Ukraine. On the first day of Russia's invasion last February a Ukrainian border guard told a Russian warship in no uncertain terms where to go after being ordered to surrender. Russia took the island, but Ukraine later recaptured it. Laying flowers at a memorial, President Zelenskyy says what happened there is proof that Ukraine will one day regain all its territory. That is the BBC's Gordon Correa reporting. The Biden administration saying it will send cluster bombs to Ukraine. Many are outlawed by many of America's closest allies. A cluster bomb is designed to explode and disperse smaller bomblets over large a area. They've also been known to put civilians at risk. New York Times Pentagon correspondent John Ismay joined WTOP to explain why the U .S. is sending those weapons to Ukraine. I think what this is is perhaps maybe one of the least worst options the Pentagon has. Meaning if they feel that they're unable to continue sending the high explosive shells that they've sent so many of to Ukraine already, and if Ukraine is willing to accept the risk, the additional attendant risk that comes with these cluster weapon shells, then it appears to me that the Pentagon has decided to acquiesce to what Ukraine's been asking for. The decision coming just before that NATO summit in Lithuania. President Biden likely to face questions from two -thirds alliance of members who have banned the use of those weapons. "Book. We are Proud Boys how a right-wing street gang ushered in a new era of American extremism. Andy's so good to have you here with Tim and myself here in studio. As I was thinking about you coming on, listening to your talk. I mean, is this our Ku Klux Klan in terms of our times Ku Klux Klan is that how we need to think about it? There are absolute comparisons to be made. I mean, this is a force that is racist at its core. They've made inroads with politics and they've made inroads with the American public. But with the Klan you have to remember, the Klan didn't lose power because people rebuffed them. The Klan lost power because so much of the American public shared that ideology that they weren't really needed anymore. And that's the fear going forward with these guys is that enough people are going to see political violence as normalized option in politics that the Proud Boys may not be needed. You say racist, but it's not all just white members. Right. All Proud Boys are not just white. I get asked about this a lot. And the Proud Boys, first of all, they're racist at their core, right? Gavin Gavin gave them a tenant that they have to accept if they join. Anybody can join, but they have to accept that white men are responsible for the success of the west. And there are people of color. There are also neo Nazis in the Proud Boys, but they are all gathering under this banner of getting to fight out their rage in the street against the left and against Trump's opponents. And that can create strange bedfellows just last weekend Nazis joined Proud Boys in Texas for a drag queen story hour event they were protesting. And also on top of that, the very few people of color that are members of the Proud Boys are held aloft constantly by the Proud Boys as evidence that they're not racist. They're not white supremacists. And that is served to put a veil in front of them when they're confusing the media and law enforcement. Hey, Andy, over the summer, back in June, we saw footage emerge from Idaho about the patriot front. Gathering to protest an LGBTQ event. And I'm wondering where the relationship is between patriot front, Proud Boys and other sort of right-wing extremists help us kind of untangle that web. Right. This is a machine and a cycle of extremism that we're seeing in front of us right now. For example, QAnon conspiracy theorists and Alex Jones type plant a seed that satanic pedophiles in the form of drag queens are coming for your children. Donald Trump and Fox News sanitize and grow that seed for their audiences, push it out to millions of people. And then the extremist street groups, like the Proud Boys, patriot front, oath keepers who are also big on January 6th come to burn it all down. And so the Proud Boys I see them as both normalizers of political violence, but also the pointy end of this extremism machine. Now, if you lop off one of those parts, there is somebody there already ready to take it on. And the scary part about what we're seeing now is that everyday Americans are joining these extremist groups in the streets. And so you are seeing how big are they? I would say they're in the 5000 to 10,000 range. They may have been bigger at one point, but people ask, well, why should I worry about them if they're not going to knock on my door one day? They have been known to do door knocks, but they're threat lies in their ability to coalition build. They can gather many, many extremists in everyday Americans together under one banner wherever they are in the country. Were you afraid doing this? At any time? Because you were embedded within. I mean, certainly writing for HuffPost, I've gone, I've been in face to face with Proud Boys over the years. Originally, they weren't a threat to me because I'm a white guy and they don't think that they can intimidate me. It's true. And now I've gotten married to a fellow extremism reporter and now that she's in the picture, we have received some threats because they see a woman or whenever they see a person of color, they know that they can add an intimidation factor in there. So not before maybe a little bit now. Can you talk a little bit about your reporting and how you went around about reporting this over the last few years? Yeah, I mean, we were covering their rallies from day one, a lot of them happened in Portland, Oregon, a liberal town where they believe that they could kick the hornets nest in terms of leftism. And they would show up for maga events as what they called them. Wait for leftists to come out and then track them down and beat them into submission. This was ongoing and we were shouting it from the hilltops over and over, but I don't think it was until, you know, Donald Trump sits on stage and says, stand back, stand by at the presidential debate in 2020, that most Americans knew about their violence. What was that moment for you as a reporter who covered this? I mean, did that legitimize the Proud Boys movement? I mean, it certainly made them feel that way. You can argue that Trump didn't intend to activate the Proud Boys with that. And he was specifically asked to disavow them. And he did not, he blamed the left and then said Proud Boys stand back and stand by. But the Proud Boys took it as marching orders and they started gearing up for what they called on a blog post Civil War. Their last stand for Trump on January 6th. And Trump's inability to rebuff them is just indicative of the GOP's embrace of them. I spoke to Roger Stone sat down with him last year and he told me admitted to me that he'd been advising the Proud Boys through their political ambitions for years. Andy, before we let you go, there is sort of a silver line into this entire coverage. You mentioned that you met your wife, who is a fellow reporter on extremism. You met her at a neo Nazi rally. Unite the right in 2017, we were both reporting for competing publications and we are from that day just recently we got married in France and love it a Nazi rally, a hopeless place. The story you can tell your grandkids. Hey, just quickly, 30, 40 seconds here based on your reporting based what you learned about the Proud Boys, is there some conclusion as the January 6th committee continues to do its investigation about some connection between the Trump administration, The White House at the time. And the Proud Boys go quickly. Well, not only did Roger Stone tell me he'd been advising them for years, but I'm interested to see their sedition trial coming up this winter because Proud Boys have already agreed to testify against their own and we may learn a lot about their relationship to Donald Trump and the people around him. Certainly they've been doing security for top level media pundits and politicians. So we're going to learn a lot this winter. Well, we learned a lot in talking to you and through your book, Andy Campbell, thank you so much. Investigative reporter at HuffPost, his book, check it out. "He's written a dozen books. And so he's a very familiar character. And that is why, Despite getting into the race sort of at the last minute, mid July, he was able to amass a pretty significant block of support. Just from the from the gecko because he is such a non quality among, um, particularly European base voters and conservative voters. And and again, as you said, at least according to most recent polls, he is leading That is the lead in Canada among all the re recall replacement candidates, meaning he has anywhere between 10 and 2025% of the vote. Um, but we have seen, particularly after this news surface that research talking about about the allegations from his former fiancee, but she has denied Um, you do see a bit more criticism coming from his fellow candidates who have, I guess made the calculation that they can, um At least initially, when Elder entered the race. I think there was a lot of reticence among the Republican his fellow Republicans in the race to criticize him because he is so popular, but certainly you've seen Kevin talking to foreign marathon Diego calling for him to step out to drop out of the race. You've also seen Caitlyn Jenner say the same. And so he's starting to be criticized and also because he has so far There are three going on four major debates so far, and he has skipped each one. He's gotten some criticism from his fellow Republican candidates for that as well. One of the things that I appreciated in your piece was how you asked about sort of what his what his appointments would be like, who are the kinds of people that he would want around him. He talked about. His judicial appointments being based on someone like a Justice Clarence Thomas education being someone like Betsy DeVos. The other thing that I was really struck by in your piece was that he seemed to get most defensive about any questions related to his mentorship of Former Trump adviser. Uh Stephen Miller. Do you know what was behind that? Yeah, it was. That was an interesting kind of surprised that he, um He took so much umbrage. But yes. So oddly enough sort of interesting back story that I was. I wanted to find out more about is that Stephen Miller this you know the former adviser and speechwriter to President Trump, who really helped craft Some great administration's travel ban and so forth, so he actually got his start as a sort of a public person, his public persona by calling into elders radio show. When, when Stephen Miller was just a teenager, Santa Barbara Santa Monica High School and he ended up calling him repeatedly throughout the years and Jean Guerrero, the author of the book, Um, Hate Monger, which is obviously a very critical biography of Stephen Miller. She's written that Elder was almost like a mentor of sorts to Miller. Yeah, and so I just asked Elder about that relationship because I wanted to explore that. Um, and he It was very upset, relatively upset. He actually suggested that by bringing that up, I was accusing him of being a Nazi or fascist, which, obviously, I didn't use any of those terms. But Um yes, I think that does kind of give you a flavor. Not just we've been talking about his policy positions, which are perhaps outside the mainstream of California politics. But he's also got this very combative style, which I think he's honed as a a talk radio personality. Well, we've got calls coming in. Let me go to Chris in Oakland. Hi, Chris. Hi. Thanks for taking my call. So I'm listening to this and sheer horror understanding more about this person who may actually have a shot of taking over our state. Um I like most people. I think that I know followed the request from the Gavin Gavin campaign to vote No one recall and not choose the second person. So now I'm second guessing myself on that. That being said, um Not this. This would be such a travesty. I think and a eight so against the will of the people of California that my immediate reaction is. We need to recall him that So my question to you is that I'm not into like the paralysis, you know, paralyzing politics here this But this this this is beyond the pill. Um, what would what would a recall process look like? What would timeframes look like? I'm sure we can mobilize people and mobilized signatures. But is that even a real, uh, objective? Assuming the worst that happens here? You mean immediately, Then try to recall Larry Elder of the work he happened they want they want get out there with petitions and signatures and start the recall process. Is there anything that was preclude us from doing that? Marissa time, Um, money. I mean, I think like at the end of the day whether Newsome survives this or somebody else Texas place the next governor is going to be elected next November. Um, I think you have to wait 90 days to institute a recall election on a sitting public official. At least they know that's the law at the local level in California. Um and then, you know, I just think you have to think about the, uh, the practicality of something like that. I mean, if you were given, you know, months to collect the signatures and then months to verify them, I mean, think about how long this recall process has taken. I'm not sure that would be the most sort of effective way of stymieing. A short term governor because the truth is just pulling numbers wise, it's highly unlikely any of these candidates could beat Newsom in a head to head right. And so a lot of those support for the recall pulls around the same amount of support that John Cox, the Republican challenger in 2018, Got which is around 38 or so percent. And so I think that, um, you know, for Democrats who are worried about this, Their best hope is to get their friends to vote. First of all and to beat the recall. And if that doesn't work, you know to really be leaning on the Legislature and others within government to put a check on that power because you know, we do have in California, a super majority of Democrats in the state Legislature. There's certainly a lot that a governor could do in a short period of time, but it's not sort of an all powerful position. And where they could just come in and do anything they wanted over the objections of Legislature that has the numbers in most cases to override vetoes. We're talking about Larry Elder who could replace Governor Gavin Newsom. If voters recall Newsom, you're listening to forum. I mean, a Kim Jim writes. I believe it is very irresponsible that the Democratic Party does not have a plan B. If Newsome gets recalled leaving the candidate Blank is dangerous to our state, So who is a responsible person to select? As Newsom's successor. There's a lot of things that Jim brings up there just just to remind us of the mechanics of the recall because I just don't think we can do it enough, Ben and re says, is that if more than half of California voters vote to recall Um, the governor. The top vote getter of the second question of who should replace him will be governor..

Hypothetically speaking. I know. All right. Well, let me ask you this man. Let's just says we're putting out hypotheticals does does tell our walk away. Or would Jerry have to let him go? I don't Can you fire your friend twice? Yeah, I think Russo's tell you have to walk away. I don't think jury a leather fire him, right? That's it. That's why I like Larus is here as long as he wants to be here. Let me give you can I answer that question? Thank you, man. Can I answer that question? Mikes open. There is a guy sitting in a TV studio. His name is Frank Thomas G in right, Tom, Ozzy Gideon. Are fine. Ozzy gin. I'm just telling you, man. You just tell me what Okay, Let's assume that's enough, Jr. Let's assume I don't see TL are walking away during the season and let's also not forget they're tied for first. Jerry's not firing. Let's assume they don't They make the playoffs and they're out the first round. But When the hero looks like it's coming up. These guys getting healthy and Tony says You know what? I'm done. I'm out. This is it. I would hire as again in a freaking second. I love eyes again. I'm a huge fan of the guy with the team is winning. All right, the team's winning right. So what's exciting, right tied for first I got said there's more positives and negatives with the white suit question. It's just that this is an egregious era current yesterday, I want to ask Anthony Rizzo. He joins us now brought to you by your Chicago land. Toyota dealers and Valparaiso University. Dear Driver, hurry in and save Toyota risk. Good morning. We'll get to your game Winning. Walk off in a second. Yes. Do you feel like Because there's all this consternation over with Tony LaRussa said. I didn't know the rule yesterday. Do you feel like you as a baseball player? No. The rulebook. So if something took place, you'd say, Yeah, I knew that rule. Um Yeah, For the most part, usually easier. I'll be honest. Once a year. There's something that happens that you like. I don't know that Really last night in our game. Picture. Pinch hitter made the last out Extras. And the eight hole hitter was the first guy. Tonto be on second base for the team. The next inning, which The umpires hold up, and I didn't know that. Was the rule on that. So I guess that's what technically one of the longer I just learned this year that At least again today but visible. I didn't see the LaRussa. Then what was the rule that he didn't know? So he did not know because he put his closer. On base in extra innings, and Hendrick Liam Hendriks because he did not know that he could have because he's a pitcher could have put Jose a Bre. You back out who had made the out before that, and he had Hendrix out there. Get him over to third. And now he has a guy tried to steal gets thrown out. And he said, Yeah, I would never have let our closer run from third. And I did not know the rule that I had to. You could have used the brave and he's getting destroyed nationally for it. Uh huh. Yeah, basically the same thing. Last night, because I mean, the umpires even gather last night Because Gavin Gavin looks ended up running and it was supposed Agent Pollack pinch it. So yes, when? Where Similar thing. I didn't know that either so, but Uh, I just sees it. Just go to my line. I just play first station, Try toe. Hey, my land. Yeah, You got the manager. I mean, you want to be able Noah's meaning rules as possible. But the manager and the staff is supposed to know they had the book. They got everything they need to know. I want to know about your game winning home run yesterday and talk about the Dodgers series. What were you looking for that pitch? Um Geared their face Kresinger the night before you give me two fastballs, and he started me off fast forward and then a flyer so I found off One of his best sliders s So I kind of had a Lane of you know, where is to start the slider and whatnot and Give me a fastball way and it's two strikes and I was really just in battle mode there. Two strikes and Fortunately, I hit it. No one standing, uh The shortstop. Usually usually the Times I hit the ground ball that way, there's someone standing there, but last night it worked out. So I watched the game last night and I watch you get that hit. And normally they're carrying your jersey and you're getting punched in the rib cage and the whole deal. The best scoring chance on the power play was the short handed breakaway Alex Schilling had to make A big time save on a pure breakaway by Bentley. "To zero. That boy Sean, noting that would be a huge goal of this one stands up. The puck came out from behind the net. In a big scramble and know who somehow found a way to get it in. Here we go. Review is over. And it is no goal. No goal. Wow. Okay. Well, we've had two reviews in this game, and they have disallowed both of those goals. Unfortunately, we don't know why One thing they need to start doing is miking. The referees. So that they can come out when he gets fans back in the stands, and they can explain to the fans and to us why they disallowed that would really help her if they said something. Over the P A. They just say it wasn't allowed if they could give any kind of reasoning as toe toe. Why, but nevertheless no goal, So it's still a two. Nothing game. Each team with the goal disallowed now in this contest. Air Force comes out and put some pressure on Bentley right away after the restart, But Bentley with the takeaway, and here comes Bentley into the air Force and no back. How's it down? Low centers went out front and anticipating that was Alex Schilling. He saw that centering pass to came out from behind the net, and he batted it down and then flopped on and covered it up in the paint. J just saw the replay of it. It's a good call. It was off of a high stick, so it was on the far end of the ice really hard for us to see. Where that was. The puck came out from behind the net over the top of the net, and as it was falling down, Sean Nolan had a stick up and he bats it in and from the angle of the camera. Even it did look like That stick was above the crossbar, so it was disallowed because of a high step. That's the standard. If it's above the crossbar and you swing at it, that's a high stick. Here's a tap one by Air Force and Jake 11. Up with the park. You'll fire one on net from the blue line, and it's gloved out of the air by grab go. He gives it to a teammate going by. Don't think that it would have gone in, so it's not actually a shot on goal. Let me you will chip it into the air Force and Maynard rims it around for Nate Orn Elk River, Minnesota on the far side of the ice porn, fumbled a punt gets it back, and then his pass intercepted at the Bentley Blue line taken away by Hamlet. Muscling his way past Alex Maynard. He's got the puck takes it in behind the net comes out the other side with it features to the point for a shot and a pad save made by showing from there that was taken by Christian Felton. Air Force with the puck and a drive from just inside the blue Line. A line drive by Blake Bride that's knocked away by grab Go, and then it got out of plays. Yeah, after getting a good look at that replay, you could definitely see it. It was high. It was. It was a good call on that one. But Really unfortunate. The Falcons getting more shots in this period, a lot more scoring opportunities, have not been able to get one past the freshman goalie Nicholas Grab code for Bentley. The first half of this period was pretty much Bentley dominating, but Air Force has played better. Since about the 11 minute mark. They get another shot there that's knocked down out front and then out to the neutral zone, where it's off of a stick and up into the stands about 10 ft. Away from my partner, not not very far. We had a good look at that. When we have a great view of this game, we're only about seven rows off the ice and The glasses only maybe. I don't know. J 15 ft. In front of us. We We are in play right way Got our heads on the swivel. So there's a face up its center ice after the puck got out of play and airports will win this draw and it's Marshall Bowery Bowery. In trouble Looks up. Does find a man saves it to cook Cook trying to hit Gavin Gavin got a stick on. It sends it into the Bentley side on getting back in saving it. There is Bowery again. Barry feeds to cook. Cook follows one toward the net, but it's intercepted, redirected by deadly clear out past knocked down, played by Bye. Ah Harper to Bari Bari. A shot from the near circle is wide. Dug out of the corner by Bentley but contested at the blue line and kept in by air Force. Well, Gavin has it. Gavin tied up. Stick battle along the wall. Far side. Falcons Keep the pop in play. This is cooked. To the neutral zone. It comes and a pump jumped up and out of play that hit a patch of Pinsky in the shoulder and then fell into the air Force bench on some lines that have gotten jumbled up there will Gavin's on the second line, type occupancy. Is on the fourth line. Willie Grimes has been on that top line. Those three guys were out there, but great energy. They kept the puck in that Bentley and for quite a while to 49 to go in the period face off in the neutral zone controlled by Air Force. My goal is in hell. Send it in its knocked down at the blue line by Bentley. They turn and go with it. Shipped into the air Force and cut off behind the net by Schilling gives it to Maraj is Maraj is trying to find Pinsky coming up on your wall intercepted by Bentley that was Van row buys, ran more boys intercepted. It skated in, took the shot saved by showing and then he kind of slammed into showing a little bit of Falcons objected to the contact. They're exchanging some pleasantries down there. Zach Murad, just right in the middle of that as well, along with And roll boys..

But California's of our state position E everything. All of it. We got we have now. Almost 3.3 million. Doses. In our freezers. 3.3 million that I should say that have been delivered to us. Mm. We've only Inoculated 816,000 people. And of the 3.3 million It's 24.8%. It is fourth lowest. We are 47th in the nation. With shipments keep coming in, but they're not going into people's arms. More than three quarters of the vaccines that have been shipped to us have not been used. Only Hawaii, Alabama and Georgia have done worse. On a percentage basis. We now have almost 2.5 million vaccines sitting in the freezer. Unused 2.5 million and I just saw a graphic on CNN. It's said that death rates and L a county or a 1400% Since November. The hospitalizations were up 680%. So first of all, you could see that closing the restaurant's helped Secondly, With outrageous increases like that. Why don't they have vaccination? Tents everywhere. Everywhere. Much of the vaccine should be targeted in Los Angeles County. We are by far the hottest spot. In the nation, let alone the state were one of the hottest spots in the world. And there's no vaccine. I just don't believable. Somebody just sent us a story from ABC News in the Bay Area. Channel seven, a San Francisco Tech CEO. David Freedberg says We should have a warlike mentality vaccinate as many people as possible, eliminate the red tape. He apparently is the tech of a company that focuses on life sciences, Gavin Gavin Newsom created a 60 Person advisory board. We have to get as many people vaccinated his fastest possible The speed needs to be the priority, not deciding who goes first. And in what order? Yes, he's here. The reason people health care providers you're taking so long to get vaccinated is because they require collecting an idee health cards and all those things because they're concerned about getting in trouble. But it delays everything. Yeah, they're so rigid on the order. Of the vaccines, how they should be distributed that every single person has to be analyzed 10 different ways to make sure that they fit in the proper category. You can't do that. You just have that fact that people line up and stab him in the arm. You know, one way to, uh, to compare how other states are doing is just look at doses per 100,000 people. It's after South Dakota has the highest of expectation rate it comes out to 5400 doses. Have administered per 100,000. West Virginia 5300 North Dakota 5100. Yeah. Look at Big States. New York. Almost 3000, Florida almost 3000 doses. 100,000 people. Texas Almost 3000, Illinois 2600 You know what California's 1900? We're vaccinating at About one third the rate of South Dakota no matter how you look at the numbers were one of the worst states in the nation. Because because Newsome is obsessed with this, this bizarre term called Equity But that he's got, he declares the order of the groups and nothing could deviate from that. And then you have a lot of cases. 40 50% of that group. Doesn't show up. They don't want to get the vaccine and then nobody knows who to give the vaccine to. It just takes too long and too much red tape to organize this exactly to get to the most vulnerable people. First. It's going to slow everything down to the point of gridlock, which is what's happening. That's where we are. All right. We got more coming up. John and Ken Ko Phi and Marquez.
