The Mad Gasser of Mattoon

"Story may not be familiar to a lot of people outside of central illinois. But if you are from central illinois specifically the town of matutuine then you are probably familiar with the events that began in early september. Nineteen forty four. Here's the headline folks. There was a mysterious figure in black. Who was for some enigmatic reason spraying paralyzing gas into the windows of people's kohl's that's that's a very specific odd flex slash crime of the newspapers knoll. They went overboard. Forget i'm ben. The newspapers went overboard with the reporting this. And they they kind of took it to the court of public opinion declaring that these attacks these gassings were the work of what they called a mad gasser. An off air. We talked about the idea of putting the there's this very specific move with reporting and publicity sometimes with alarmist reporting to put the word mad in front of a verb of something. Someone did so like mad gasser. there would also be the one you brought up earlier and all. Yeah like a mad bomber. a mad. I don't know once you start getting into slashing that just you don't need a an extra word in front of that you just slasher. It's it's implied. I think you're a mad slasher. I do like the term mad dash though right like i made a mad dash for the bus or whatever But no. It's true. Ben and i was looking at up. Because the the idea of of gassing or of a paralyzing gas to me makes me think of what would be considered a nerve agent or nerve gas which wasn't really discovered or invented even really until. I believe the late

"But many residents of matutuine refused to accept the mpa theory. Even as chief. Cole and johnson closed the case. The chief had so much success convincing others that he was right in part because he adopted a stance that catered to a wide audience. He argued the mad. Gasser wasn't real but the gas was anyone who claimed they'd simply spotted. Prowler suffered from an api. Anyone who experienced real symptoms had gotten sick from the fumes released by the nearby atlas imperial diesel engine company plant specifically coal pointed to the factories use of carbon tetra chloride. That's a colorless liquid with a sweet smell which means it fit the description that many victims reported atlas imperial was likely using the compound in their fire extinguishers but carbon tetra chloride also functioned as a component in insect repellent. And fume again. There's not much research about the long term effects of carbon tetra chloride on the human body. The epa has classified it as a probable carcinogen ask for its short-term effects. The compounds list of potential symptoms reads a lot like those reported in mma tune. The epa says it can trigger nausea vomiting and headaches. It seems unlikely that it could cost temporary paralysis in a person but again there's still a lot we don't know about carbon tetra chloride as airtight. Is that all. Sounds the manager of the atlas imperial plant a man named. Wj webster quickly refuted kohl's hypothesis. Carbon tetra chloride had been in use at the factory for decades and no employees had ever complained of any side effects. The idea that his facility was to blame for the mad gasser incidents was in his words. Ludicrous webster even brought an official from the state health department into the plant to investigate. The agent testified that there was no possibility of carbon tetra chloride vapors getting into the outside atmosphere in any amount of concentration that would even closely approximate a toxic condition in other words. Whatever amount of carbon tetra chloride may have escaped from the factory. It was too diluted to paralyze or sick and anyone in tune additionally webster pointed out that even if his factory did somehow release concentrated toxic gas. The incident wouldn't fit the mad gasser profile. Remember the attacks only targeted small spaces on several occasions. A woman in one room would get sick. While family members who were elsewhere in the house felt fine if the atlas imperial plant unleashed enormous quantities of carbon tetra chloride india tune. Everyone would get sick at once. Plus the gasser reports only came in at night. The plant was primarily operational during the day. Making it even more unlikely. The fumes would seep out while the alleged attacks were happening which means the atlas imperial theory is just as unlikely as mass hysteria and that leaves us with one probable hypothesis. The mad gasser was real and fortunately that solution raise more questions than answers. We don't know their identity their motives or whether they ever faced consequences for their crimes but we can make some educated guesses based on their record which might include a series of gassings. That happened outside of the tune. Turns out there's a decades long history of unsolved gas-attacks all of which may have been perpetrated by the same phantom anesthetist coming up will examine the incidents that happened outside of matutuine. The truth is out there and now you can see it for yourself n. Even document the evidence. "Mp. I in the summer of fifteen eighteen. Hundreds of townspeople took to the streets of strasbourg in modern day. France to dance feverishly until they collapsed. Some even died. They weren't celebrating their pain and distress was clear. They literally couldn't stop themselves. Mma tune in nineteen forty. Four may have been just as uneasy as strasbourg was in fifteen eighteen. Many residents had loved ones fighting overseas in world war. Two and particularly nasty strain of the flu had swept through the region with so many people on edge. It wouldn't take much to ignite panic after mateen's citizens heard reports of a phantom anesthetist if they caught with a cooking gas or sweet perfume it could trigger panic likewise in a town that's had multiple reports of mysterious break-ins someone might see. A squirrel rustling in the bushes and assume a prowler was at their window or believe an ordinary shadow from a tree belongs to a fleeing attacker. This phenomenon is known as confirmation bias. That's the human impulse to interpret information to suit your predetermined beliefs. We've discussed it pretty extensively in previous episodes. Let's say for whatever reason you're convinced. That cake has medicinal properties. You eat some cake and start to feel better. You're going to be more likely to attribute the positive gains to the slice. Just eight even. If you've been resting and drinking plenty of water. If you read a study that supports your opinion. That cake is medicine. You'll accept it as true. If you read a contradicting report. You're more likely to explain it away. You might say that. The person who published the information owns pie shop in wants to defame cake or might just call them a liar. Confirmation bias can color people's political and religious identity. It's one reason that hard data isn't always effective at changing people's minds about their deeply held beliefs and in the case of the mad gasser. It might have inspired people to interpret ordinary sights and sounds as evidence that they were under attack. why not they already believe. The culprit could be anywhere walking among them. Say you have loose window panes. Every time the wind blows their little bit. You're so used to it. You barely notice the sound until one day after you read a new story about a mad gasser and you assume the rattling noise must be someone trying to break into your house and this wouldn't be the only example in which confirmation bias lead to mass psychogenic illness take for example the june bug epidemic of nineteen sixty two as the name implies. The incident began in june nineteen sixty to a woman at an american based textile factory. Fell mysteriously ill. After supposedly opening a box of fabric shipped from england. The woman whom will call barbara saw a bug bite on her skin just as she experienced a slew of strange symptoms including fatigue nausea and disorientating within moments. She broke out in a full body rash. Her supervisor suspected that she'd come down with the flu in to go home but barbara was adamant that an insect had given her a disease the following day. Several more workers fell ill at their stations. Within three days sixty three employees reported experiencing symptoms similar to barbara's the media began asking questions about hazardous work conditions and the factory had no choice but to temporarily shut down. They underwent a full insect inspection and fumigation but besides a few nets and beetle. No bugs turned up confident. That conditions were safe. The factory owners call their workers back the assured their employees that their symptoms were all in their heads and it worked the illnesses abruptly stopped just like edmonton reports of gassing ceased after the chief of police see cole publicly declared that the town was in the grips of a mass hysteria on the heels of his announcement. The citizens realized there was nothing to be afraid of so they stopped imagining gas-attacks. As an explanation mass hysteria also cleared up the puzzling lack of motive for anyone conducting the so-called attacks all along police were flummoxed by the. Here's unpredictability the victims. Were seemingly random from walks of life and races. Nothing was ever stolen from their homes now. They had an answer. The guests who didn't need a motive because they didn't exist in short m. p. is can explain a lot of the circumstances surrounding the tune gas-attacks but there are a few details. That don't add up. I the victims don't exactly fit the profile of a population that's normally susceptible to a mass psychogenic illness but more importantly an n. p. I can't explain why the earliest victims imagine the exact same attack reports of the mad gasser or made public so maybe chief coups mass hysteria theory was actually part of a cover up coming up. "I tell dad jokes sometimes he left right I feel bad for Ben McAdams but because he's our friend congressman congressman former Salt Lake County mayor now congressman been McAdams and just because he was beaten you know we wanted to do some funny I Gasser he appeared on our Twitter feed holding a picture of us that we had given him to decorate his office was Gina felt he needed something to hang on the wall well with him when he was first city county mayor of there was a picture of him and in the paper that and his office and he was bare it had no pictures at all so we sent him a framed photo of us and and bless his heart he's taking it with him to Washington put it on the wall in his office here and and then I was wondering if he was going to take it to Washington I think we we kinda hit the kind of student yelled out at a more you know got the word out to ME better be taken so he tweeted a couple of days ago heading to DC this morning and I'm finally taking that piece of office to quarter make my space complete and he's holding the picture of us well you know some some people want all that's you know that's the thing to do that but then there are people saying like great congressman Mick Adams but what I'd like to know is what you're doing to protect our rights the quality of life in our for our citizens to protect our country Honda just like this yeah he I wonder why anybody runs for office I'm the exact cause no matter what good you do no matter what policies you put in place that that are good for people people are nasty no matter what you do you know coincidentally I asked been McAdams that very far you did service sometime ago a year ago or so we were we were doing some of them together and I said so you're he said I really like being like the mayor I really like being in politics I I'm enjoying this a move running for Congress and I I like it much but don't you just have to put up with mobile with all of these negative phone calls and people giving him a hard time he said yeah I do all the time okay of it we get that's all we we give politicians are time all the time but he said yeah but we don't you know unless they're here in the room he said he said it's it's worth it though because you have to also weigh that against what good you do for people you think that your if you believe that you're doing good for people you weigh it against that and it doesn't doesn't hurt that I I read that Michelle Obama book which is really good and in it she talks about we think about what it's like to be the first black president I mean I mean everybody gets well I could never been me everybody gets gets that negative input think how much more you would get if you were the first black president and then people ask Michelle how how do you put up with that and she said he has this unbelievable ability to ignore all that and there are some horrible vile stuff that he hears every day still and she said I had a hard time dealing with it and she said but he just has as for what bin McAdams is saying here the greater good feel kind of thing I was able to ignore that I'm I would be terrible I had the the anybody criticizes me like that you know I mean we get it we get it too it makes me feel terrible it makes me the question what I'm doing you know I off or well I don't want to do this anymore you know and people are to me in and it's not worth it you know as we get that we get Chris children well either way by the way we do get this every day well it's just that that tweet that you just read I don't understand what that person was hoping to accomplish now to that person's credit McAdams replied in this in this thread so he said a follow me on Twitter this is my personal account the one where he had the picture okay that's my personal county said go go follow my office official Twitter for updates on my activities or follow me on Facebook and Instagram too I keep pretty busy and I'm hard at work and the guy responded to that and said I did that I know will fall following your official pal thank you yeah so so that's good to know that he has two years of a personal one and so and so then that guy said I see you're just kind of clowning around on this one yeah with radio from hell yeah I wouldn't do that on my real one yeah you're just more serious but even if it was his real one sure so what yeah and what are you hoping to accomplish yeah well you can open the shame him he's apparently just a playboy Holly does a stand around holding photos that's what he does all day long and smile one of my doing to help with your rights well I'm in Washington how about that what are you doing there were other people who did did the same sort of thing you know talk what did you what you say you want to bug balance budget amendment don't you realize there has to be deficit spending or the economy doesn't grow decorating my office nothing nothing nothing nothing I have a conversation about that we can I am grateful that there are still good people out there that want to bother to run for office I it's well it doesn't seem like the good people are getting getting anywhere right now and and I would run for office but I know I'd never get elected so now you know what yeah I would run for office again I couldn't stand the criticism you have to wear a tie can I put you also gave been McAdams a tide you know what was Ralph well backpacker I'm sorry your raised about bad I try to help you you should ask her for that you can.
