"Prevent any disease. It is the odd couple fox. Sports radio on a worship wednesday. Rob parker chris. Broussard and we are in the middle of a lot of talk of derek jeeter and the hall of fame we just had gary sheffield and he had some insight into being a teammate of geeta which was a lot of fun to talk to him and gary get some chuckles and some laughs. But let's talk about switch gears and talk about the. Nfl and the miami dolphins and to their quarterback their embattled quarterback. I'll say because it seemed as if they're not feeling him because all they've talked about since he's been there is about getting another quarterback to replace him remember that in the draft last year and then they decided in the draft is pasture not to do it but now it came time for them to vote for team captains. And guess. What your quarterback to didn't give voted as a captain. How was that not possible. I mean his teammates had a chance to give him a boost to confidence. To say your guy we're behind you shut out the noise everywhere else. You have the uniform on your miami dolphin. You're under center. Our hopes lie with you. We saw that in new england last year. I know it didn't get cam and help this year. But think about what they did with cam year ago. They may cam the captain. He showed up and basically the teammates voted him captain. So this is very unutilised bringing rob rob. This is unusual. Data team doesn't vote a guy. Captain it says some slap in the face not right or you are one thousand percent right and just to let people know how unusual it is. There are four teams in the nfl. Who do not have season-long captains. They chain week to week. I don't know why they do what they do. That will be the ravens the bears the browns and the cowboys. That's weird even though we can all kind of agree. Yeah lamar baker may feel dak. Prescott are captains those teams not. They're not really a question. There right the panthers texans and saints have not named there captains yet. So we'll wait for that but taking all that in into consideration there only two teams right now. Entering the season who starting quarterback is not a team. Captain one of them is new england. That's because it was cam newton before he got cut mack. Jones has been there long enough to be voted a captain. Number two is to. Who is your incumbent. Starting quilt alternate holy. Two to two teams to quarterbacks in the league to starting quarterback yup are not captain that we know of right now. We're still waiting on work on teams in saints have not named there captains yet and there aren't good ball debt have week to week different captains. That's huge i mean rob. I also think and matt jones. I mean maybe as a rookie. He won't be voted a captain..

"What was that like me. Like you know what i mean to face your uncle in a real game in the major leagues that had to be spirit. Yeah it was. Special man my granddad. That's all he wanted a whole life. You know i've been. I've been getting beat up. I dock my whole life. Came got punished. Bad as a kid and You know when. I finally had that uniform on with the padres and and i see my uncle standing out there getting ready to piss to me. It made my granddad day. You know it was the best feeling he ever had You know as a family. We talked about it for a long time. And when i got that hit on and you know i was just like amazed like all the work that i have put in when i was in when i was little and i couldn't hit him. You know. I finally got to the point where i can hit him in Spring training i to pick an beat at out so i hate to say that. Don't count z. Yeah he says. The dow struck you out what accounted show. The other thing too. The little league world series ended not too long ago and you played in that. I mean you've been in some major things in your life. Obviously you want a world series with the florida marlins in one thousand nine hundred seven but what was that like did you. Did you know you had what it took to get to the made to the major leagues. Or when you were planning that you would just plan your kid having fun. What won't take us back to the little league world series. I was a fan. I was a fan of baseball in. The big red machine was out of tampa at low fat field. Yeah and so. You know Somebody had brought it up to the other day about our little league teams bike from nineteen seventy two and seventy four and all those and then and then all those errors we had and they said you know if if people really had took the time out to dig deep until you're you're you're a little league program they will see that there's not been a program ever to ever been match this program because we used to go to the world series year after year and it was nothing to us if we lost the game it was like we did on each other as players and it was like we ain't supposed to lose and we're not even post to win by a little bit iran. We're supposed to win by a lot of runs so our expectations was high at a young age. So it carried over as i got older but but most of the older players and The older parents and people would tell me what i was going to be before i even knew it. Wow they saw it at that time. That's amazing gary last thing you said your your coaching travel teams. Do you teach them more of an old school of pros side of batty. Greg question year launch angles. And all that stuff. You see now strike outs..

"Great baseball player nine time. All-star a world series champion. He's been on the show before. Gary sheffield gary. Welcome to the what's up guys doing doing gray and don't forget chris. Five hundred thousand nine home runs. And that's a magic number as gary knows with me so he gets hall of fame. Vote every year man to be able to get that many home runs in the big leagues is incredible but today is hall of fame. Day do you watch. Is it hard to watch or pay attention to or not like i said i. I really don't watch baseball. You're not coaching Coaching these travel ball teams. And things like that so you know the way the game play. This is not my favorite way to watch game so you know it does say that. I don't watch any of it. That and i'll be telling you a lie i china would stop on it sometimes When i see bias hit or i see You know trout hits you know. Bryce harper hit. When i see these guys up there you know i wanna. I'm interested in there at that. Mookie betts and when. I see these guys like that then. I may stop and watch but you know watching a complete game trying to be entertained by the game you know. That's not me. You gary robb mention the five hundred nine homers. You also close to three hundred to ninety two for your career. What is your feeling on why you are in the hall at this point like because obviously those numbers are certainly hall of fame worthy all my career when i look back on it. You know when you retire you always look back at things what things you said things you've done. I don't regret anything. I'd say it a done. You know that was just my personality. That was me being me. And i don't regret that you know. The bottom line is when i see awards handed out when i be listening to certain guys who won. Mvp certain guys who've done this. Don net. i. I look at their numbers. And look at my. I'll put a decade or number next an mvp seasons and in that case. I should have twelve and so we're not cds things. It's almost like you sit here and then you move the goalposts every time when you say oh well you. You're not The gold glove. Because you hit enough or you're not the mvp because you didn't feel good enough. Well i did all those things in nineteen ninety two. You know i was. I was for triple crown. I may fourteen errors but the guy can't kevin eddy the third base and had twenty one era that he wind up getting a gold glove and barry bonds wind up winning. Mvp stole they moved the goalpost. So then they say up. Everybody's had more the bases at me. That's why he got it so still impatient. I thought doing all these things then. Oh he's on a losing team. So i heard it all you know so like i said i'm the type of personality will. Is that long as i know what it is..

"Mean what we remember about him. Are those clutch moments in the playoffs. And i do think. Rob look obviously a football and basketball. I think winning rings has become more important if you will or or more talked about than ever right not that. It wasn't important back in the day. It's just more compensation i. Am we talk more and more about winning rings. Hold it against players more than we used to. If they don't have a ring baseball. I actually think in baseball rob. It might be going the other way. I don't or maybe just never. It was never just about the rings. i think. Understand like a ted williams. Chris who was a great hitter. Nobody can take that away to red. Sox couldn't make the playoffs right. williams played in crate. You had to be the best team in your league right. And i think i think he played in the world series. One time. chris was it yup. And that doesn't mean we're going to sit here and say ted williams who's alaska to bat four hundred six wasn't a great player right have pitching. They didn't have a good team. But ted williams was a great plan. We understand baseball. It's not the same mike. Trout is a great player. Chris reason the angels can't make the playoffs or beep play five hundred ball. He's not the reason lukas show. Hey rap right now. He actually used doing both. He's built and gray and revenue for them not making exactly so baseball's different. It's not like basketball. Where one or two guys can really make a difference and in football is mostly about the quarterback. You know that it's not about offensive player. It's a model later now. You're right. I mean we. We put more on the quarterback that we actually should and we'll get into that later hint hint with the athletic rating. Tom brady is the best football player of all time. So we'll get into that in that discussion. But i i do think rob in in light of the fact is so many and i know you can't do this in reality but let's say take away all the suspicions or beliefs or whatever about barry bonds and pd's right. Yep even he. I've never seen anything like that in baseball. No i've never ever seen anything like that in baseball. Whereas we've said many times is seven out of ten times. You fail by this dude. Every single bad. It was like i gotta watch. She's like you expect. He just never knew what he could do. Exactly and even you were talking about it chris..

Lakers Lose Anthony Davis To Injury, Game To Nuggets

"Hello Lakers Nation welcome and apparently our inttra went the way of Anthony Davis's Achilles because it was not was not there where I thought it was so welcome and guys to an impromptu show a little bit because just regular, you know, we thought we'd be talking about the game tonight, but Lakers vs. Nuggets, but the sense I get from Lakers fans is that we mostly want to talk about the injury to Anthony Davis's Achilles Smith and everything else. Frankly secondary joining me tonight is Gary Sheffield Junior. Welcome back Gary great great show too. Cuz a call back before man roughing night, and obviously everybody is kind of waiting and holding our breath until we get that MRI on 80s Achilles tomorrow. Yeah, and we're going to wait on this summer. I but I also want to put some emphasis on the fact that I would love if Anthony Davis could just get you know, just take a load off and take maybe two or three potential even a month and just give to make sure that this guy's ready to play because the way the Lakers are playing there are two headed monster if Anthony Davis is a ride. The Lakers are winning a title LeBron's not right. They're not winning a title. They can figure out the rest of these pieces in between jobs. But when Anthony Davis is going to be dealing with this type of injury, especially with an achilles' you don't want him to say. Yeah, it feels good enough. I think I can go. We want to make sure that Anthony Davis doesn't even have to worry about this type of boundary because it didn't even seem like he took significant contact for that to be reactivated and that goes to show you really how how rushed this injury was and it wasn't necessarily I wouldn't call it necessary. So right now the Lakers are in position there twenty one in seven. I mean, they're they've they've really earned the right to to give a t sometimes. So I'm hoping that they're really patient with this and they don't they don't just get too excited just cuz it feels that way. I can give something this team. I want him to take. Yeah, I mean, you know what, it feels like they weren't patient enough to begin with with this injury. And that was that was a concern for a lot of fans know I will say I was worried about it. Yeah, but then I saw Anthony Davis's quote after the last game against the Memphis Grizzlies, which was a win you put a 35 points. You look good looked explosive on a few place. So I felt a little better there, but then he also mentioned that yeah, it can get better with ranch, but I'm not trying to rest but then that kind of you know, some red flags. They're like, hey I can make this better if I just rest it, but I don't want to do that. But then he also threw in that the team doctors and everything are okay with him being out there and playing like they gave him the okay to be out there. So to me that that says that there wasn't a risk for more injury and I had dr. Edwin Porter's over here on the Lakers Nation YouTube channel, come on and say the same things say this isn't this doesn't put you at higher risk for tearing your

"We'll just put it put it like that. And yet now you've you both become very good on television. What is it been like to to see the game from a different side now? Well, because you start on the standing when guys struggling you know, what they're going through. And basically, you you know, how to you know, bring the the reality to the fan. Dan and get defend engaged on what's going on with that player. Whether he's playing good always he's playing bad. We'd never tried to always try to deal with a player how wanted to be dealt with. And if an F, I if I'm talking about a player in I wouldn't say negative way. What just telling the truth about his play this nothing wrong with that? As a as a player. I wanted somebody that critique my play, and if they talked about if I was playing bad if I was planned bat while I'm getting mad about them telling the truth, and I think that that's the way all players want to be treated wrapping up here with Gary Sheffield, others a silent auction for the charity. There's a lot of great memorabilia items. Do you have a what what's the one keepsake? You have from your playing days. I got a Hank Aaron jersey signed by Hank. Aaron when I signed to go to the Braves, it was it never dawned on me that this is demand that my Granddad was talking about all these years. So I went this past fall down to the Dominican Republic for my first time to the David Ortiz celebrity golf classic benefiting the David Ortiz. Children's fund big Papi is a very first of all he's a great host. But also he's super carrying and he gives back, and I know it's a little weird gang podcasts and them talking lovingly of Ortiz here. Look, I hate them just as much as any other Yankee fan imaging the baseball lines. But you know off the field. It's a different story as you'll come to here with our guest this week. And so poppy has found Asian. He uses it to help kids who are battling heart disease both in New England. And in the Dominican Republic, it's a great weekend that he has down in his native Dominican Republic a lot of other athletes and celebrities stars from using and movies. I'll come. Down a lot of big sponsors as well. There's a great live auction. And it's just a it's it's it's great that a poppy does the work that he does with his Dacian. But it's also be great that he shows off the Dominican Republic his his country in in such a great light, and such a great fashion. And I truly enjoyed my time down there with him and his crew end with everyone in the DR while I was there, of course, a number of athletes participating in the cause and a couple of former Yankees one, of course, being Johnny Damon who may be the only athlete that can walk into any restaurant in New York or Boston and have a drink and or meal purchased for him and his crew. But the other being somebody who probably wasn't too beloved in Boston. But I enjoyed his time as a Yankee for sure, and I know a lot of my friends did as well. And then of course, was former Yankee number eleven Mr. Gary Sheffield and was interesting. I started off my chat with Gary by. By recalling time in two thousand sixteen may of two thousand sixteen it was poppies last season in the bigs. "Purpose might work with with athletes. You know, there's there's PT's on the medical staff for the New York Yankees. But physical therapists work with all people of abilities level. So this is actually a language issue. That's right in the heart of of my role to physical therapy is they're they're talking about disability being people who who might be born with with something that we've preclude them from doing something versus an injury. So they've actually separated that so now. Yeah. Now, referring to it as the I L now, what did we Ridgely bring me in for the labor them. That's whatever he wants to know. So the shoulder and the hip are both ball and socket joints. I think we can really visualize that if you ball up one fist, and you and you cut your other hand over it. That's the ball and socket. The hip is a really really deep ball and socket when you hear someone dislocating a hip that's a devastating injury. Just like Bo Jackson when he dislocated his hip which led to his career shortening injury. But the shoulders also technically a ball and socket. Joint. And it's but it's not as deep as the hip. So I was I was taught it's really easy to visualize. It's more of a golf ball on a Gulf te- that technically is still a ball and socket joint. But it's not as deep and the labor comes in as kind of a gasket, it's this cartilage ring that helps to deepen the golf tee around the golf ball. If we're using that analogy for the shoulder and the issue with the labor, MS throwing overhead, and this is where you get a little league coaches trying to limit innings in players. It has a lot to do with elbow health. But also shoulder health is that labor is this cartilage ring that helps deepen that socket..

"Fame. Ballot. What was your experience? Like, I was surprised when we see thought about this. I'd always done sort of hypothetical ballots and just posted something on Twitter, and my chance for readers and say all right, if I had the ballot here, the ten guys would vote for it's very different when you actually have the piece of paper this stuff for listeners, you still paper. And you get the you realize that once you check something off you are committing to it. And so that down in the first seven names was pretty straightforward in then over the course of the next couple days settled on two more. And then realized all right, I've got nine and no good vote for ten because I defied fourteen candidates would vote for if I had not had the limit. And then it was wait. Once I checked that tenth box done. Right. Then then it's then it's a commitment than by that point. You just put it in the oval up stamp on it send it and I sat on it for a solid two weeks at that point. Because I read again because I realized once I checked the last box Gary Sheffield was last he was tenth of ten for me. Once I got to that one. Then I was done then I hit made the commitment. And and that was it. There's no going back from there. And I did alternately Sheffield was my gut for the ten spot, and I did settle on that. But try to play devil's advocate with myself for a while. I did that with a few candidates. What's the reason for what's the reason against before eventually settling on especially eight nine ten because like I said the first seven which includes the four guys who were elected those were easy. It was the the last three were the were difficult wants to decide on it against actually make the check markets much easier to say it was my hypothetical ballot post this on Twitter, and I can. Change my mind. Nothing. Nothing matters. There's no changing your mind once you've checked the box and put it in the mail. Who was the toughest guy for you to leave off. I think number eleven was Manny Ramirez. While alternately what I settled on with him was if there were enough spots. I would vote for Manny Ramirez, he tested positive twice for performance enhancing drugs. I don't view that as something to eliminate a guy from the ballot. I know many voters do many voters won't vote for anyone with even a whiff of suspicion of performance enhancing drug use. But to me that is the separator between him and other players on the ballot. It is a reason to rank him somewhat lower. There were lots of their players in my ten negative considerations around them. But I still voted for them to me. It's all a balance again questions of what are we actually trying to celebrate here by electing certain players, but it nannies cases good of a hitter as he was great of a hitter was and statistical case, I think does hold up looking at him and saying I can't put him on there. Where have roughly equally qualified candidates like Gary Sheffield who didn't have that. I have a feeling next year. I took a glance at the ballot. The other. I'm going to end up voting for manning because we just cleared. Four totally qualified candidates on the ballot and Fred McGriff. Who was I think for thirteen to fourteen th on my list? He's also if the ballot because he ran out of time. So I think fitting Manny Ramirez a couple other guys on the ballot will be a lot easier next year. Yeah. And look you're not the only one who has looked at the fact that player was suspended. Was busted in way Ramirez was is a separator. And I thought about that. When I when I used to vote, and what I decided in the end was like, you know, what? Pete Rose was suspended from baseball, and he was kicked out of baseball. And as far as major league baseball. It's not he's not a member. Good standing as far as the whole of famous concerned. He's not a member of good standing never appeared on a ballot on the other hand. Manny Ramirez is a member. Good standing. He was employees. The Chicago Cubs. The hall of fame puts him on the ballot every year. And so that was when I thought about that a separate now..

"Fame. "I'll stop laughing up. So. Gravy vampires? Good, right. Stugatz. I don't even know what it means. Exactly. Like, what am I doing my just showing up while you're eating gravy? And I wait for you to consume it, and then I attacked her neck. So I could get the gravy as it goes down. They suck the gravy out of people. Okay. But I wait. I just hang out at like golden corral waiting for people to put extra gravy like out of this extraordinarily niche, vampire work. He sees the show with the stugatz on the ticket. So we were talking during the break about Jason Williamson more because when when we were growing up Jason Williams was the coolest talking about why chocolate not the murderer. Anyways, that Jayson Williams? I wouldn't want to emulate the other Jason Williams. So Jason's not the one that was the greatest college basketball player ever and got no motorcycle. Yeah. You got something in your throat UK. But what's the matter? You were just inhaling meet six is that what you know? Why was sprinting Billy I have sand in my beard, my knees, bloody. And I'm a real mess. I haven't been able to get all the sand out because we ran the sprints. I injured myself, and I fell down you sound like you're about to die. So go ahead. Take five, okay? Follow lebatardshow on Instagram. If you wanna see why Dan sounds like he's about to die. So I would Jason Williams. And I and the funny thing I got zero handles on the basketball court, but he had the cool commercials. He was an electrical wire that just landed on the floor when he broke into the NBA with the Sacramento Kings highlight reels white kid doing an one stuff the by the fake behind. The back pass is going to the layup. The bounce off the back of the elbow pass wide open shooter the fake between the legs man, he was the coolest, and I would try and practice and fail and fail because I had small hands at the time. But I would me late him. But it got me thinking who on the courts or on the baseball diamond. Would you guys emulate because when I was a little kid in little league to I would do the Gary Sheffield like bat speed thing. Just because he was my favorite baseball player at the time. Even though I didn't have to be to do that. Yeah. I did the Gary Sheffield Jeff Bagwell who's my favorite player like getting down squat and low you would squat that low. Obviously not in games. But like when I was emulate like that's not how I hit like in baseball. But like we don't have your own since you didn't. Oh, we never played the game with your friends. It's like guests dancing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I mean. I could probably do that with nineties baseball sciences. Like, we can we can go on his batting stance guy. Still thing. Oh, you didn't think? So he was a YouTube sensation. Yeah. I think I followed him on my space is he still thing. I don't know. He would do it with like a broomstick, right? Seven eight six four five six four eight three seven. If you want to call in and say who you imitated who did you invitation Billy? To good question. I think everybody down here like when they were playing around the Gary Sheffield, not necessarily like in competition. But just because it was so different. And then there was like Craig counsel post Marlins where he did that like weird thing we'd have is battling way over his head. And he had like that weird like tic where ski pushing it up even higher do that yet. It's straight out backyard. We played wiffle ball and it never ended. Well for me..

"My whole life was in every, you know, convenience store gas station like I had stuff with. You're not native American right strike, you the if I was because there are some native people who like wearing it, and that's their choice to. I'm not sure tell whatever react. But when I and I understand that people are sad to lose something from their life. I do I actually have empathy for that. But at a certain point like you have to look at hearts of it that it's like it. We've had our time with this. You can have it in you can wear it. You can buy it up, and you can have it in your house. You can put it over your car, whatever the team's not gonna wear it. And you can look at them, and you can see them wearing it. If you want to it's just like, this is a time that we need to move forward with something else. Also like from just a sports perspective. We can't win with it. I mean, I feel like it's such bad. Get rid of it. I mean, they're blaming all the bad vibes on native Americans that correctly. Gary Sheffield two thousand eight hundred eighty nine hits hits are six hundred eighty nine hits. I think it's eight hundred eight nine it's five hundred nine home runs. I I mean. mean eighteen hundred seventy five RBI's sixteen hundred thirty six runs. His war was sixty point five for his career. Yeah. The dude. Two ninety two. So great to as we start to understand that like batting averages are going down like three hundred used to be the magic. But I think now guys are in the next five years or ten years because what's happening is three hundreds the new three fifty. I think. Twenty five. Yeah. I mean, it's so funny like thirty three Larry Walker. There's a lot of talk about Larry Walker. You know, he never played more than one hundred forty five games in a season. He was always hurt. He it's the consistency of doing never had more than one hundred seventy five hits. Yes, he played in Colorado at the one hundred fifty RBI's one year the year is MVP three sixty six. That's awesome. You won't see that. You will never see that. Again, fifty is kind of the new four hundred to me to me if you're arguing for Harold Baines people like that really McGee should get in. I mean, I'm serious. I agree with you guy on the battling title guy. You know guy would steal fifty sixty. But we're not. Steals basis. Ridiculous herro..

Pros that have played in the Little League World Series

"This week, Sunday baseball's actually going to be the little league classic in williamsport, Pennsylvania. We've got the Phillies the Manson, Jess you already there. What are you doing there? So early that you when I talk, I I literally games. I mean, this is this is where at that, but there I'll tell you and I got two boys. I'm a little league coach. I don't know if I should admit that because sometimes if good and bad, but being here we the first opening day, lily World Series got four games, four more tomorrow you on Saturday. And then I'll have a game Sunday prior to our Sunday night game with the Phillies vets. But it's it's cool in the scene here. You'll be here soon BUSTER, but it's it's, it's pretty special. Yeah, you did this game last year? I did not do it. I was on vacation. What's it? Like when you get the big leaguers mixing with a little leaguers. The coolest thing BUSTER in, you know, we, we've seen it only once. You know the cardinals and the pirates here last year and what was really took me aback as expect. Obviously, when the big leaguers get here, the literally will be running up and getting autographs and photos and southeast and Instagram stories and all that. As soon as I remember the cardinals got here first before the pirates and they got off the bus and they were going after because they'd already watched a few of the games. They literally new kids names. You know, Carlos Martinez had some kids internationally that he like. I think it was a catcher Venezuela that he was like, totally adamant. I need to find this kid. I want my photo. Can I get your picture? Got his autograph, and it was so genuine. And this is before the cameras were even on them, or I mean, these big leaguers were fans of these kids. And to me, that's what makes us special is I think we only a bit of a reminder of like why the game of baseball is really played, but especially those guys not to like knock any player by any means, but. I think one hundred sixty two games. You would get it at the grind, but you get here and oh my gosh. Is it exuding up every just pure love for the game? You know, are they that towns and most of them aren't, but oh, they love it and it rubs off and you can tell when the big leaguers get here that there's a little bit of that. Just I remember when I was eleven years old. I remember when I was twelve and you know the stories just come out and it's it's cool and it's important. Along those lines about the players who play in the Little League World series. This week's poll question is who among the alum of the Little League World series, my goodness. There's so many from Chris story. The, you know, the the NHL player who so many current major leaguers Scott Kingery, Michael Conforto in our game or guys who played Little League World series, but who is the best alum of the Little League World series was played in the big leagues in the four choices and believe me. We could have had so many more Todd Frazier, Jason Varitek, Gary Sheffield or Dwight Gooden who would be the best alum of those four. You know, I put Todd Frazier, I voted this week because there's something about him that still just screams little league. I mean, anyone who's ever been around Todd Frazier and BUSTER. I know you know this, you've been around him. I mean, and part of its maybe his size and just as demeanor and the way he acts. I mean, he, he, he's still just has kid and love for the game the way he plays the game. And this is twenty year anniversary of the team that he one Little League World series with with Tom's river New Jersey, and they're all coming back. He's throwing out the first pitch, and I feel like in covering now the Little League World series. My fourth year, those images are the ones that are still
