We need to change our economic indicators to keep up with the crisis

"Know once you get past the scale of the job losses with the latest numbers on first time claims for unemployment. They came out this morning putting the total at just under twenty seven million people who've lost their jobs once you get past that scale it is the speed. That's amazing. Twenty seven million jobs vaporized in five weeks which poses a challenge for those of us who observe analyze this economy accustomed as we are to quarterly and monthly data. Being good enough. So economists are getting creative. Marketplace's refinish war gets is going. The great recession played out gradually over eighteen months. What's happening today's instead of playing out of a months and years playing out of days and weeks. Justin Wolfer is a professor of economics at University of Michigan our friends. Gdp and the unemployment rate are reported once a month once a quarter but we need is economic indicators. To tell us what's happening today. Andrew Chamberlain is chief economist at glass door. He says luckily we live in an age of data. We have really different ways of measuring the economy today than we have a decade ago tech platform social media specialized firms have all kinds of useful real time. Data take for example would job search platforms can tell us you've got Twenty million unemployed Americans. You Might WanNa know whether they are all expecting to go back to work or not You might want to know if they're out there searching for jobs or not. The Federal Reserve looks at data from credit card processors to know how people are spending and payroll processing from. Adp to track jobs. Both of those come out. Weekly Ben Hur's on is an economist with IHS market the TSA started making available The public passenger traffic At airports on a daily basis in real time. And so we could see that passenger traffic at us. Airports had fallen like ninety five percent by the end of March. Weekly chain store sales. Tell us about spending electricity. Use can be a proxy for economic output. As for what exactly it's all telling US Gary Schlossberg is global market strategist with the wells. Fargo Investment Institute. They still show the economy continuing to decline. But there are a couple which are beginning to bottom out a little bit you know. There's some hope straws in that the economy is still weakening but approaching about whatever the indicator once you hit bottom. There's nowhere to go but up

"I am to Gary Schlossberg where I had strangely dedicated line for my questions about the economy I think I'll be picking up the hotline every hour it's all I can do to resist getting in touch of Derry Schlossberg is the senior economist for wells capital management mark Thompson or engage a ten and thanks for joining us Kerry thanks for having me along there's a science yeah it's your soul so news intensive every cycle when it comes to the economy I want to address first the overall question about the health of the economy and then I have a question about a specific thing that's happening worldwide that sort of bizarre I want to ask using against but first let's talk about this recession stop and I was front page on your time today that the White House is scrambling to handle what they feel might be a coming recession or at least concerns about it how legitimate are those concerns well the the economy is eleven years into a growth cycle the calendar doesn't dictate the economy the timing of a recession but I I think the expression of the economy doesn't die the growth cycle doesn't die of old age it's murder and in this case we have a we have a trade policy that is creating a lot of uncertainty there may be some legitimate goals we can argue that politically but uncertainty about just what effect terrorists will have on manufacturing agriculture clearly there's been an effect and the sixty four dollar question now is what kind of spill over will we get to the dominant services part of the economy where a lot of the jobs are held what effect will that have on consumer spending watching and waiting at this point so when we see a healthy economy right now because the fundamentals are still supposedly healthy we could argue you know what actual consumers have on hand and you know of depleted savings and all the rest of healthcare costs in this sort of thing but the the fundamental seem sound based on some of the things you said in the past but their sound despite these other things you just referenced in other words in spite of these terrorists in spite of this burden to the American consumer the American economy to sort of the terror of imposed burden the economy continues to chug along well we better insulated than a lot of economies overseas where driven by the consumer driven by more generally domestic spending more of our spending is in what we call services less tangible things and goods and that tends to be less trade sensitive as well so so far we've been pretty well insulated the problem is that if we do get to spill over to some of the other industries away from manufacturing agriculture things that are areas that are more exposed to the global economy that could ultimately affect the labor market consumer confidence employment wage growth we're not there yet although we are beginning to see signs of laboring wear and tear a little bit in the services sector employment was down in July the purchasing managers survey that we look at for services still showing it that area growing but down to a three year low so I think that's where a lot of the concern comes from both of the White House and on Wall Street and among economists as well and what's being talked about at the White House apparently as these different sort of economic a stimulus related things on strategies and you know even though the president was critical of Obama for a stimulus packages it seems as though he's for example it's been very hard on the fed and says that that that right there should be additional rate cuts and they're there even is consideration of these payroll tax cuts yes yes well we're a long way from here to there for one thing the consumer is the one area of strength in the economy right now so trying to to push the consumer even further I think would have a limited impact there's also concern about the budget deficit spending running well ahead of of tax revenues and this would only aggravated especially if there isn't a clear and present danger to the economy this has to be voted on in Congress I think all of us of for a lower taxes but unless the consumer is really rolling over and there is genuine concern about the economy in the concern I think would be that much greater in an election year both among Democrats and Republicans unless that happens so I think that's going to be more speculation more in the area of discussion than action so we got it we got to see the economy really losing a lot of momentum I think before and it has to be centered on the consumer well before we begin to consider that I I suspect in the well at the White House it's more contingency planning at this point the thing that I was referencing at the beginning of our conversation that jumped out at me and you can explain it and now I can't you did the reverse yield thing last week that was it was like watching a great circus performers something a bit more naturally on the circuit hell yeah yeah that's right you work in the circus every day I guess the the negative mortgages that are showing up in Denmark for example so right explain I'm negative mortgage to us because it is a wild concept well I think it's all part of it truly an individual can be paid back the negative mortgage rate is five tenths of a percent there just parenthetically there is still fees to the bank the lender is the one that bears the cost the ultimate investor is somewhat less than five tenths of a percent but there there is a loss there it it is really applies to negative yields generally why would an investor put money down on an investment of security stock where they're guaranteed to lose the money at its maturity well the the the really operative term there is at maturity investors can still make money if interest rates drop even further become more negative because as we do the price goes up and that's just what may happen in Europe the European central bank is prepared to cut rates further make an even more negative than that would generate a price increase of those securities others are so concerned about big losses that they're more willing to lock in a given laws to to prevent the unknown sort of an insurance policy and that is why some investors or are purchasing these mortgage related investments as well I might add there are banks out there that are really required told a certain amount of government debt in Europe and so therefore stole those negative yielding securities so there are reasons why an investor may go that route now for home buyer they could actually see income if they borrow money the problem is there is secondary sex one thing if there is strong enough demand home prices will go up if they go up the down payment on that home will go up much as it has in this country which.

"Weren't able to it looked this is so my eyes are as mentioned before the break I've never seen before where you surrender as you go into this a Dave Chapelle show was a huge show in Las Vegas at the Mandalay bay under fifteen thousand people can fit in that arena and so I'm not saying that they sold every seat alike or that he used every see but let's assume over ten thousand people there so here's the point all those ten thousand people we all surrender our cell phone to these pouches you literally check your cell phone into this pouch and the pouch doesn't have a you can keep your cell phone and the pouch okay so but you can't get access to your cell phone because it's inside the pouch and the only way that the pouches unlocked is you know on your way out what a pain what a pain on one level and if you were at and and of course you're right it's an inconvenience on the other hand they had the system really well worked out and they made it clear if we see any cell phones in use you will be ejected immediately and your cell phone will be I forget a dose of yourself will be confiscated or they got on contents gonna be array something like that well and they and their people roving around the crowd ushers instead of making sure that we can use our cell phone so anyway you kind of settle in because they're trying to protect what is sort of intellectual property you know and a certain experience so Dave Chapelle is doing this material he wants you to be present for any also wants to do it again you know you may be doing it for a special something like that so that was the first environment in which I'd seen that because now at at you know music shows you're used to seeing people holding up their phones right I mean it's just a it's almost like boiler plate right body holds up their phone at a concert not only that but the they're they're streaming live right that's exactly right and you can argue that that actually helps the musicians on stage and on helps get the word out on it it may actually help sell their concert tour records whatever it may be I mean recordings so anyway it's happening in San Matteo is that same thing there is a school in San Matteo this high school and they are going phone free it's the largest public school in the county to do it so they again get this pouch the kids do the high school kids and it's a locking device for their phones the phone goes in and it gets locked through this magnetic device and it's not unlocked again until the final bell of the day so they don't have their phones an access to they have them don't have access to their phone social media and everything that's on the phone until the end of the school day teachers their apparent it's as I San Matteo high school and school just god in session so teachers say is actually working the scene more attentive students absolutely it would there is no question about it if you can do it it engages of people in a way they would not engage otherwise right hand during lunch hour when they're still locked up in the pouch they noticed that the students are socializing a little bit more with one another now in case of an emergency because now I know in the you know America four point oh we have to worry about you know people coming in and shooting up the place but in in case an emergency every classroom does have the unlocking device so you know you can still unlock those pouches if you need to and the teachers to have their own cell phones and landlines that kind of thing but apparently kids were panicked initially but a lot of them say it's it's cool you know what actually works right I think it may cut down on anxiety absolutely I think it's a great net positive yeah I'm really really happy that they're doing I think should be done in more schools and and more places were learning is going out or you need to connect in some way or think about when you go out to dinner even how many people you know how tough it is to resist checking your phone as the alerts go off and all the rest will inevitably like I was just so out for lunch over the weekend and I had to get on my phone and while we're sitting there at the table at the restaurant and because I had to get on the app to give them my special called so I can get the discount does not if it's not one thing it's another and everybody looks at you like what's it like in the phone like her there in the night right away to be the rudest diner here yeah so we come back we'll talk economy with Gary Schlossberg KGO eight ten Johnson show on KGO eight ten morning I brought her car with your bottom of the hour news updates sponsored by choose MA T. dot org find proven treatment for opioid addiction a homeless man.

"The second time this week the stock market had another big three digit move six thirty good morning. I'm Brett burkhart. Correspondent Steve Kastenbaum says the markets are opening up as we come off a wild day that had stocks deep in the red and then well into the black. The Dow Jones industrial average span more than eight hundred seventy points yesterday. It was down more than six hundred before investors went on a buying spree prices, then shot up in the last hour of trading. And by the time the closing bell rang. The Dow was up two hundred and sixty points. It was a remarkable swing especially considering that this last week of December is often a slow time on Wall Street, and the Dow is up more than two hundred points, this hours, we had the opening bell. Gary is a senior economist at wells capital management, given the turbulence that we've been seeing overseas giving signs of slowing economic growth. And the fact that inflation does appear to be rolling over at the moment slowing down over the past couple of months, at least the underlying rate that had the effect of giving the said pause is also a lot of concern in the market perhaps. It's a Federal Reserve as well about the flattening yield curve in the risk of an inversion that is short term rates converge with longer term rates and perhaps succeed them given. All those concerns uncertainties the tone of the Fed's remarks from chairman Powell on down to other officials has become a bit more dovish the said, we'll be driven by the economic data at the time raising some uncertainties about how many rate increases if any we can expect to see he's senior economist at wells. We talk with wells capital management's, Gary Schlossberg, how did we come into December? And what have we seen so far? Well, December has been the worst starting about ten years for months that normally is the second best one over the course of the year historically, going back nineteen sixty we came in with a series of worries about the economy trade relations policy the inverted yield curve as we approach that a whole Gannett it really began to show we were in a Goldilocks kind of situation last year. And now we're gonna volatile kind of situation. Are we coming out of this bull market recovery? Well, we're down over eleven percent. There are a lot of concerns. "Cool things down and and really has settled into a very strong role there and it's an opportunity to get them here and he can work his way into whatever role boat has for but at least initially doing come into games like that yesterday and hopefully you have clean any well obviously new new faces young bodies fans are excited between by the way bobby hansen and duggar and i'll even throw in slater most speed you guys have ever had on a roster yeah it's fun to see a little spin the lineup i mean you know you look at mccutchen gorky doug you're in the outfield yesterday and enhancing in the lineup those are four guys that can go first third or best pants showed yesterday i a home pretty fast to watch it probably is the most speed we've had the wild yes good stuff and by the way so let's all these moves are just a precursor to the manny machado acquisition right right yeah lining things up yeah just keep them in black and orange is that i know you following those re obviously following those reports pretty closely that the dodgers and diamondbacks are leading suitors for him is that stuff that you guys talk about every every hour on the hour just as long as they give up the farm i think that's really the main thing very good a steep tariffs hopefully well bobby exciting young young talent and and you know it i guess we would close it by asking at forty seven and forty five kind of in the big picture thirty thousand feet do you feel like you guys are poised now to kind of get that break loose from five hundred or do you think you still need to kind of do something at the end of the month well we'll follow it i mean that's part of the reason you get you get duggar and black up here now because those are guys that would be your goto after the deadline before the deadline and really understand what what our needs look like as we get closer to thirty one and for us we we got we got to be be honest that at times there's there's parts of our everyday lineup that this doesn't perform level we expect and so maybe there's there's an answer in in duggar coming up or you know an answer in our bullpen with black so we'll monitor it closely but i i like where we are i just wish i wish that we could create that separation as you said i mean we started to do it there with the sweep of arizona and we take a step back so two steps forward and sometimes two steps back so we've gotta find a way to put ourselves in a better position seems like giants play better against the good team so with the cubs in the as coming in maybe that will get him going so well anyway bobby good is exciting to bring the youth in the fan base is pretty intrigued so we'll continue to monitor and thanks for coming on the show thanks bobby all right good morning i think there is bobby evans city national bank business and technology got chasing middleton noted dodger fan jay mids all up in it we got hurt no tony hit a home run to beat them so that was good some weird stuff on the other side why don't we do that kurd demarcus cousins all that george karl checked in the first yeah stocks are extending their rally this week after a somewhat surprising boost on friday that came after the tariffs on china took effect the dow was up around two hundred and fifty points but some analysts are watching the s and p five hundred it is by definition leading indicator and the government's fiscal stimulus has been tricky to estimate that issue is stock market's ability to whether developing headwinds likely coming into play late this year or early two thousand nineteen as easy yearoveryear comparison this from the corporate tax cut begin to wear off and the economic impact of the trade war begins to make itself felt that's gary schlossberg senior economist at wells capital management one stock of note today is twitter platform is cleaning up its haters by increasing the takedown rate thing is that may being the user numbers for the quarter pushing some shareholders to jump ship twitter's having it's worth day on the market since march it's a classic quality over quantity game that's playing out have great days everybody i'm jason middleton less sick the roads on monday july nine chilton auto body traffic desk looks like this each fees making some progress.
