"I'm gary riley and i'm shop nice this is playing with science because we get constantly quest for this we are going to cost me query which means you steering wheel you on driving this show yes our listeners are in charge we all mealy servants conto it's as you might say and the great thing is that our show today is all about world cup and football we have to call it football because we're talking about soccer and the world cup plus i told chuck e coli the neo i can't call it that way not during the world cup itself so it's world cup football and to help us of course we have none other than our soccer expert yes all around physics sports expert i'd have to say from university of lynchburg as of july first would be professor eric golf what's happened professor goff i'm just oak for the world cup really enjoying the early action ecstasy what happens with spain portugal but having a lot of fun talking about this new ball and the science and the the road cup i mean there's more science than really people can imagine and this is where we're going to drill down into let's let's start with the ball we've touched it before it's not likely to be that different from the ball hughes in terms of the way performs in brazil in two thousand fourteen is that correct that's correct the the the mistake of java linee was not repeated in twenty fourteen and twenty eighteen the ball that we're using now the telstar eighteen we've tested this in the air namic properties are very similar to the brasilia that was used for years ago so speaking of touching balls this particular telstar is there any physical difference that makes it stand out from the brazil like when you look at the ball itself aside from like the color scheme and the fact that it's black and white and you know what are the what are the physical differences of the two balls and what is that going to lead to in terms of performance let me talk about the differences between the two ball so twenty fourteen you've got this right he right here that was used in brazil six thermally bonded panels the panel shapes look like little helicopter blades for a couple of them the colors were quite spectacular now we got twenty eighteen till story teen for russia and it's a black and white paying amish to the original telstar six thermally bonded panels as well but the panel shapes are very different from bazooka and in fact the total seem linked on the telstar is thirty percent longer than it is on the brasileira and in order to make sure that ball isn't too rough with that added same links what adidas did was they made the seems a little bit shallower and a little bit narrower and the surface texturing is a little little shorter than it is on the brasileira if you hold the brasilia and you run your fingers along the grooves or just random along the panels it feels a little bit rougher but telstar was able to make up for that by having a longer seem life so now what would a longer seem length do let's just say that they kept the same length the same i'm sorry not to saying thirty percent more seem but kept the death and the with the same as the brasilia so you have a deeper wider seam but thirty percent more of that what's that gonna do that ball then so the overall goal would have been rougher compared to the zoo key and what that does is it moves what we call and i know chuck loves this phrase ring prices to a smaller speed waiting for it in greg nice for these two balls about the same if you make them a lot rougher lot smoother you change that drag crisis that it makes the dynamics noticeably different for the players they're going to notice some changes you whenever you start messing with the seem shapes and the design of the panels you can't make the amex exactly the same audie dusted a reasonably good job of keeping the.
