"Gary Patterson? What does he do? He grabs the best, athletes and a lotta times changes them, position wise. He's got a lot of speed. And they're running back showed a lot of speed. I mean TCU when you saw some of those guys go up and down the field. You're like, wow. Ohio State doesn't have all the best athletes in this game. You knew TCU could score and Sean Robinson doesn't make that stupid interception that he hands the ball to the guy for the, you know, the run back there where Ohio State was able to turn around a. Double digit deficit and take a lead in a matter of a few minutes. I mean, the coolest thing is that when you're down twelve and you have twelve and a half or thirteen or thirteen and a half. Like, I did and Ohio State has a chance then to cover and they get into TCU territory and everybody's rooting for them. Don't let them get that first down to where I'm going, please. Let them get the first down. Let them get the first down. And then they'll Neil on the ball. And exactly what happened. They busted off about a seventeen yard play to get it down around the twelve yard line of TCU. Now, they still had nearly two minutes to go. They could have run more plays. But when I saw them looking over the sideline and letting the play clock run down from forty to where it was under eight when they hiked it. I was like they're just going to kneel. They're gonna nail in the box. They figured it out. Gary Patterson still had one time out left for TCU, but he wasn't going to use it. And so I think that's what they were waiting for. We'll TCU uses time out if they do will run another play when he didn't base. Weekly said, I'm done Ohio State new. They did what they had to do. They won the game. And of course, Ohio State bringing a ton of fans more than I ever thought. I thought it would be sixty forty split TCU fans because it's right. They're not in Fort Worth. But in Arlington a short hop skip and a jump away, but Ohio State had to have seventy percent of that fan base there and again.

"Understand that. So we've got that. We've got this to that came across the line, Kentucky football wins the SEC east hashtag book at hashtag, go cats. And of course someone couldn't resist. Michael showed seventy-two vani beats Notre Dame by three. This weekend hashtag book. It reminding us all that in the midst of the NFL fever that we caught this last weekend. There's a lot of really good college football to be played in to be had. And I think the marquee match up of the weekend is certainly going to be LSU against Auburn, LSU going on the road against Auburn, Auburn, a team that was already before the season, getting a lot of love when it came to a potential SEC darkhorse not even dark horse. I mean, they were well in it last year, but in a world where it seems to be Alabama versus everybody else auburn's at least a team that has the pieces that beat Alabama. And that we saw in recent memory do that. But the other one that becomes interesting and we're gonna hear from their head coach later today on golick a window, Gary Patterson, TCU football head coach, join dead and trae nine. Oh five eastern Golic and wingo. Nine. Oh, five. Eastern going to hear from Gary Patterson who joined the herbstreet and Fitzsimmons podcast talk about their matchup this weekend because they're facing off against Ohio State and Ohio State team that up until now has been railroading weaker opponents, but has been doing it without their head coach. We know the things surrounding this Ohio State program. The things that led to urban Meyer suspension. And now urban Meyer is back on the practice field. This week with his team will not be coaching the Ohio State buckeyes this weekend when they face TCU. That hasn't stopped people from certainly favoring TCU are favoring Ohio State in this matchup and Gary Patterson, not really one buying into the underdog. Able for us as we is. We're trying to catch up. You know, historically, they've been that way forever. How state as for us, it's it's about catching up with it because we want to become one of those that people don't don't say that this, you know, we're an underdog approach because we play with a chip on her shoulder, but we're really not an underdog. And so how do we, how do we get to where people understand that TCU's a big time place and and we, we go out and try to prove that everyday person last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. MUI that line is hovered somewhere around thirteen thirteen points that Ohio State giving the TCU haven't seen the most recent line. But in general, it's been in that area right around two touchdowns for group that's still not going to have urban Meyer on the sideline in talk the other day about with someone I was doing a hit the value of having a coach in that position or not. Because again, now we're getting to the point of the year where we're not going to forget what God urban Meyer there, and I'm very interested what she is back on the sideline. And this team continues to be prominently apart of college, football's landscape because of how good talented. This roster is. Dwayne. Haskins has gone out there and lived up to a lot of people's expectation that our talent so far in the season JK Dobbins and Weber it running back. You've got a legitimate two headed monster of powerhouse running backs in that before we even get to the juggernaut on on the defensive side of the ball. For them. So all those things lead into their, but it's what is the value of urban Meyer because you don't pay him all that money and you didn't work so hard to keep him around amidst controversy that would have landed the average college football coach on his, you know what the value of urban Meyer comes with a standard, a standard that everyone there clearly knows how to hold themselves to now, but one that went apply data day by a guy who's got the track record. Urban Meyer does produces results like a lot of cases, especially with college kids, you're going to be as good. You're going to rise and fall to the standard you're held to. And if you've got coaches and people around you that aren't going to hold everyone accountable. Then your.

With Urban Meyer's return near, Ryan Day has a chance to prove he can lead Ohio State

"Is urban Meyer coaching this game. He's not. I mean, you know, I don't know if he's shadow coaching or something like that, but he won't be on the sidelines. We'll not be on the sidelines Ryan day is the gentleman who is coaching Hieaux state even though or been was allowed to coach during the week. Right? Day's gonna be there on the sidelines. It's fair to ask whether that has any effect here because Gary Patterson on the other side lines of very good coach. I don't think this has much of an effect. I know Ryan day is an urban, but he's probably going to be a head coach soon. He's pretty good in his own. Right. So for my money, is it fair to just throw that aside cast that aside as being any kind of competitive disadvantage for state. Yes, it is a competitive disadvantage snot have their longtime and current head coach on the sidelines because if it's close, if something major happens in a major call needs to be made a reminders more familiar with the protocols in the talents and the in game situations that he's been in before, which Ryan day cannot draw on the same. But but but is it enough of a quote unquote disadvantage that we should really be talking about? I don't. I don't think it is here. I mean, it hasn't manifested itself against Oregon state and Rutgers, but that's to be expected. I think it's competitive disadvantage. It's going to alter the game significantly. But if you're looking at advantages disadvantages right now, Gary Patterson has an advantage over Ryan day. Sure. Okay. So we sort of disagree on that was sort of. I don't worry as much about it doesn't sound like your either, but we both agree to some extent. It's a little bit of a disadvantage fine

"Coach, Gary Patterson of TCU one is it would make the regular season less important and exciting. And to that, it's already too long for these kids. It's damn near a professional football length season. What do you say to that. As far as eight? Yes. Already doing to championship game. So you're replaying that ballgame, so that that doesn't make any sense because we're doing that. Teams were two teams. You know, you have four or five comes as they're already playing a championship game anyway. And so you can take the pod conferences and take to, you know, also you'd make being a guy that is in was in other compasses weren't power five before you're also giving other people opportunity which people like they like the Cinderella story. But I, you know, far as making the length of the season, I don't. I don't think it's making it any longer than what we're doing already. You're replaying the championship game. So now they wanna play the championship game then played the playoffs. Yes. Then you would. Then you're in, you're playing a longer stint, but I think what you would do is you just you wouldn't. You wouldn't have a championship game what you do as you just you would just have a playoff game. I'm with a thousand percent. How often do you stay in touch with ladainian LT. How? How often he lives in the Metroplex. You know, he's a prog. Yeah, he, he and I have done some speaking games together. He had. He had his. Is a group that he does now where they, you know, they they raise kids and they teach them in his the academy, the LT academy, what you do is you know doing things not I wanna was over at their word ceremony spoke at it. But yeah, LT doing a lot of is doing a really a lot of things in the community. His his, his foundation is it's really fun to watch them get back and really have him around. You know, he's just he's a great guy, great person. And so just having him back in the Metroplex, having back over here in Fort Worth some even though he stays so busy with NFL football plus with the chargers and everything else he does, but just having him here, it's been fun for me. 'cause last two years I've had two guys at that. I've helped coach longer ways, and that was him. And then Brian Urlacher was at New Mexico and so, oh, gosh, say it's, that's that was fun. Yeah, he was at he was actually a six, four hundred ninety pound hundred ninety five pound free safety wide receiver coming out of high school. Brian was when we recruit him. So. To be able to see both those guys grew up become who they were and you know, and have back to back years has been. It's been fun for me. That's right. I mean, so were you part of the team that helped of coaches to convert him to come out downhill and start hitting people? Well, you know what? I'll tell you what crazy is. Well, he went from that to after his rancher year. He was a two hundred and fifty pound dude. You know, we were just about unwise and not that we about moving him to defensive end, you know, and we had one of those. We had our first grim age, and he was the boundary sideline back and they run the option the field, and he basically made the quarterback pitch it to the white side of field and knock the guy about ten yards out of bounds on the pitch. And I, you know, he probably needs to stay at linebacker. Coaches, you know, we screw things up all the time, but not only the great players. Bola great players at one point time itself, we about moved LT fullback. Can you imagine that guy's cases, you know we about about screw things up and, and both cases it turned out great for both of them. And I'm very proud of say that I'm their friends and report of their their lineage. So I think you probably just made Lorenzo Neal's day by talking them out a fullback second right there. I mean, wow. And Earl, Aker, too. Yeah, he's he's first rate. So when Earl ACA, I showed campus, did he have hair like he has now when he first. It's been a long time..

"Fair balanced sung the praises of David Shaw on the phone line right now is a man who's TCU football team beat Stanford in the Alamo bowl last year entering its eighteenth season as head coach of TCU only Kirk Ferris's more tenured with an f. b. s. football program than this man, Gary Patterson. How are you coach? I'm good. Thanks. How how's the game changed coach since you. I took the reins at TCU position. Oh, yeah. Well, we number one. We've been through four or five conferences, but but I, you know, I, I think you, you see, probably all the things that I've changed. You know, probably the the, the helped they helped us really of the the student athlete is something that's really gone to the service, which I think is a good thing. But you know, outside of that, I think one thing's for sure about our game. It's always seems to be ever changing. So. You got to keep up with the times. What about social media? You keep in your your eye on that for free. Yeah, I do my own Twitter. I don't let anybody else to it. Now my edit people will do some edits, but I do a lot of them and you know, I've actually just started on Instagram. It's one of those things where I think the kids have actually gravitating a lot more to that. I'm not going to be a Snapchat guy at least not right now, so, well, hey, let's you're, you're at least the head of you gained for Bella check, refers to it as Snapface. So at least these you're calling it what it is, you know, well, Coatesville checks, I tell you if I could become as good a coach is what he is, and I'll. Then let you call whatever you wanna call it, the need to have it now, I know, right. But in terms but in terms of monitoring what your players and your your student athletes are up to on that, what do you have in place for something on that front? Why follow all of them? My wife, actually, Paul's all of them, yeah, we got. We really are social media group follows all of them just just for the simple reason as much protection forum as much as anything else. You know, like one of them was, you know, a young guy was in a boot. You know, just precautionary just east. He's, you know, he's putting it out there online. Well, no, you don't wanna do that. Then you're Ponant knows what which which ankle was hurt or which put was hurt or whatever. I, it's, you have to be a little bit. You know, we have to keep doing a good job of. Giving them information about how to act and how to do things. So. So your wife is the Twitter? I in the sky for TCU football? No, not the Twitter, but she's on. She's on quite a bit, but no, I like every other, you know division one program we've got, we've got a, we've got a edit and the information group back there that keeps an eye on them a little bit of everything. So you named, I've got TCU head coach, Gary Patterson here you named Sean Robinson, your quarterback. Just this past weekend. Why did you choose him? Coach? Number one, probably through the less interceptions both of him and my both. Really my cat has come a long way since transferred here really round the all. Probably just he's played in the ball game. He's been here the longest, but you know, and he's, he's both of them. Have you know the one element that I always like has deepened coach. They've got escape ability. They and Mike's not probably allusive, but he's. Still he's six, five quarterback still very allot more athletic than what people get him credit two, but Shawn case, you know, it's he's played in the ball game. He's been here longer and he he, he's run more plays. And so when all said and done, you know, it's, we felt like that's sunny. That was the guy that he needs to go with. Really again, it comes down to don't turn the ball over and and move the offense who who they act around, how do they they play better when you're round because our definition great players when you're in the ballgame, people get better. And so Shawn's one of those guys that has that capability TCU head coach, Gary Patterson here on the rich Eisen show home for southern than at MU..

"I mean, so I don't even know why you would ask the question because you don't think you just think we just, you know, whatever happened to another player. I, everything's going to be perfect. All of our fans think that you all think that that's what you write about. That's the message that you send out there and I worry about it all the time. Maybe the only one I, but I do worry about it. Someone said, David shot is a great job, but, oh, my ward. I mean, it's like he's God's gift of football. I didn't say he didn't do a good job. Let me tell you something about. I love these. Let me tell you something about David Shaw's. He and Chris Peterson at twelve percent one, the most underrated coach in college football, he's rated right where he should be, which is one of the best coaches in America. In football. If I'll say it again and maybe a little bit biased because I've got to meet him and know him. He's now seven years in on opening night of the NFL draft and the NFL network coverage. So he he's been Tom in the ravens organization as well. So he's been around professional and college football. I own a team. I write a blank check to David Shaw and say, kata Stanford, you're my head coach. What do you want? You want? You want game day roster, control you want. What do you need filling the check your my guy. That's how good he is. That's how good he is. These how good he is. Also, I don't think my child has any chance to play. But as much as I love Michigan, I already told David Shaw you off from his deal scholarship right now. We're in right now. Sake break, Gary Patterson of TCU. They were one of that. "That would cause one to give one pause for a split. Second. To think at this position coach. Can we maybe get another. That's what I took out of that story. I thought you were going to say, make sure he got the free two day shipping. All I mean to the Woody Hays center, what does this guy doing. There's got to be this states fifth, and by the way, the big game in September for them is at the neutral side of the Jones Mahal. It's not so neutral TCU's plane in the state of Texas. Gary Patterson is going to be joining us currently, ranked sixteenth in the Associated Press poll TCU, rounding out the top ten, Washington, sixth, Oklahoma, seventh, the u. eight big year for the you. Auburn is nine. And Penn State is ten. Well, the independent investigation awhile state was supposed to end this weekend. Is that official? Do they announce? It's definitely over. I they're working on it. They're sending it up to chain and we'll find out Tuesday whether Gary Patterson is to look across the way. Yeah, news on that front. Michigan state is eleventh Notre Dame as twelve Stamford his thirteenth Michigan fourteen. So it'll be twelve verses fourteen week couple of Saturdays and Notre Dame. Way back. I'm telling you man, those Notre Dame Michigan games. I, I went to school there for eighty six and ninety, and it was it meant so much when in just that one team would have its national title hopes not dash, but virtually dashed week one. And the other one would have a huge feather in its cat moving forward. And that was when you're the rocket my senior year covered it for Michigan daily. My first game I covered for the school newspaper in the rocket ran to back for touchdowns. I mean, it meant so much and then Lou Holtz started scheduling again before Michigan. The warm up for Michigan game when he would schedule some sort of sloppy. And I've talked by this team. I mean, it can be linked. You Bill at can tell. We can come kingdom night. We gotta beat dictate before you can't look, can't look torch Michigan. Can't you. For Michigan game with star. Then Michigan started scheduling somebody before that change the tenor that game. I'm glad that Michigan and Notre Dame back week one. Let's go means a lot for both teams that'll be twelve versus fourteen. Did you see this. Poll that took place apparently CBS sports dot com spoke to about thirty division one or b s head coaches about which coaches overrated in which ones underrated and couple of coaches wound up on both lists on this. I like things like, I know I know you do and I saw it. I gotta be honest. I clicked. You're looking for one name in particular. Look, I know everybody thinks Jim Harbaugh's, overrated. I know outside of outside of the maize and blue things at Harbaugh's overrated. I understand. And the last couple years have not been as expected, but he wasn't on the list. He was not. "Friday. Take the over rich prairie view and rice than take the field cannot wait. We're back, we're getting there. We're close. We're getting there that's coming up this Friday. TCU's Gary Patterson will be here on the show. As we we've, we've had quite a few college coaches on ready. We had Swinney we had Paul, Chris last week. We had Chris Edison on the show, and so we, we've got Gary joining us here on the on this program in our to join us throughout the whole day. Okay. So what what can we glean so far from two weeks of preseason football, here's what we can glean. I think we're going to have multiple rookies starting week one at the quarterback position. I think you're gonna see Sam darnold starting for the jets. I told you that a long time ago, it was going to happen. It's going to happen. I think we're gonna see, Josh Rosen, starting for the Zona cardinals. I think we're gonna see. I think we're gonna see, Josh Allen for the bills. I think we're gonna see, Josh Allen for the Buffalo Bills in week number one, when they're at the Baltimore Ravens, which is a difficult assignment to start, but he's getting some snaps with the ones Sean McDermott saying that today that Sean McDermott getting some snaps with the ones now that AG McCarron has seemingly snapped collarbone, which is an unfortunate, I walk out of anyone in the league right now. This poor guy finally gets his chance to start. Gets her and the bridge quarterback scenario that the Buffalo Bills had put together, it seems like they're going to be starting somebody, raw, the position, it's neither Nate Peterman or Josh Allen. You might as well see what you got in this rookie. So the trash damning Ramsey might say, we'll be taken out by the bills. They're gonna, put him on the front, curb and Allen's getting what Mayfield isn't getting the number one. Overall selection is not getting with Josh Allen about to get what Sam darnold has gotten what we're Suming. Josh Rosen has gotten as well, which is time with the ones. Baker Mayfield not getting time with the ones he might not even be second on. The death charter might be drew Stanton behind to rod Taylor when week one happens in the Browns are out there against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this is the question. I can't wait to ask Lambeau when he joins us. Just a few minutes here is coaching staffs wanna win now. So put the rookies out the put the put the vets out there and fun offices wanna show off who they just drafted, throw him out there. The reason why we took him in top of the first round as we thought he's ready, and this is a tug of war that's going on right now in preseason places that I just mentioned where Suming it's not happening Baltimore. It's gonna be flacco for sure. And then what we'll see how Lamar Jackson plays out. Right. And then I'm, I'm of the mindset. Everybody that I've just mentioned that has been drafted should play. I'm of the mindset that the Browns should start Baker Mayfield. I'm of the mindset that the jets should start Sam darnold. I'm of the mindset that Josh raw, Josh Rosen should start in in Arizona. This is what should be going down right now for these teams. And I understand that coaching staffs have jobs on the line. Understand that coaching stabs need to make sure that games are won. But the way that you win games longer is if one of these guys heads and you need to find out if this guy can hit, you need to fund at this guy can hit right now. So let's see what's going down in those places for these guys. And if not, then we got ourselves a problem. Long term, I think. When it all comes down to it. On our poll question hits on that today. You got it over there. Chris. Yeah, but talking about these rookie quarterback's, would you want your franchise rookie quarterback to start right away. Yes or no? Are you..
