"Was this last winter when we made it to another new they. Six game and and those games have just become meaningless. I saw mike brown interviewed on game day. And does he brought north carolina to the adiers day. Six game for the first time and i don't know how many years and they spent the first three minutes of the interview. Ask him how ready thought nick sabin was and they didn't even ask them about team until just the last couple of questions so those games are almost meaningless to you you know. Make them a playoff game. Where you're right Remember the cotton bowl this year with florida and they quite frankly didn't care half the team didn't go and go have great wood. That game ben. If off a playoff game with those players play will you're right. And i think that's why that's why we're we're going through this change right now and i think we're going to have it pretty soon. Thanks for the call. Billy is up next. Hey billy hey. Paul bailey from coleman I wanted to comment on the Twelve game playoff thing okay. There's been if i'm not badly wrong. There's been eight teams. That's been in the playoff over the years. It's oregon oklahoma ohio state georgia clemson alabama nortre dame and lsu and out of those eight eight schools. There's been won one championship. One one two one win three and one one more and you said something. A while ago said they'd probably not going to be satisfied just to get to the play offs because if they don't win they're gonna be. There will be disappointed. One other thing. I think that some schools garner more attention than others in if you go back to last year with notre dame and unm pick notre dame. The only thing. I think that might change. That would have been. If i had played a better game at alabama. I think they would have a little more Little more get up and go and they might have been Siblings don't forget and notre dame had beaten clemson even though it lost clemson and am had that big win against florida but the loss hurt and the fact of florida ended up crashing down. The stretch didn't help either. Am m had a couple of things going against them Thanks for the call. Earl is up next in arkansas. Good afternoon earl. Hello thank you for taking my call by mr paul and usually allom thinking frame rules guys. Thanks arkansas texas. That's again it gets down south. Yeah you know. Which by the way is one of the most famous college football games of all time. See last time. I wake up sweeping abadia. Wake up crying every two hours. Yeah no it was. It was a heartbreaker Long story short the game was supposed to be in the middle of the season and roone arledge was the head of abc sports and he consulted and people. And i can't remember who it was. It may have been beano cook. That said this could be the biggest game of the year so they moved it to the by december fourth or something december seven. I can't remember what it was and it became a one versus two game in in. I was in little rock cafe about. I can't remember a man. Okay and and president. Nixon came and declared the winner which was texas fifteen fourteen. The national champion. Even though penn state was undefeated and also in claimed the championship as well. Hey i hate to run. That's great that's a game that's worth talking about. "How do we make sure that we tweak it so it. It turns out to be good. So these young people Learn learn something out of it so they can go on with their lives so coach gary patterson beginning the season on september fourth coach. I know you're looking forward to it Will you get any any downtime. The summer or because of recruiting and camps. I it's too cluttered. Well we you know. What did we knew what june was going to be when you say twenty seven straight days basically because you're having camps or having official visits have an unofficial visit having workouts. You're doing all the things you do. We knew what was going to be like so we we took time in may which we don't already do because we can go out recruiting gave each each week. We had a different group. Get a break so we kind of were already to go. And then once the twenty seven. We'll we'll get built way. I do it because i'd take breaks in the spring. My guys get a chance to go and You know with their families. And and i'll stay around the kids so i can get to know them better and watch him work. And then you know in the july here. Starting in august we'll start back up and look forward to Hundred percent capacity. And and get back to you know college football college football. I think everybody is excited about that. Coach thanks for dropping by always enjoyed talking to you. And you'd be well. Thank you very much. You have a great summer. Thank you coach coach. "Playoff women's colleges stop tour like 'cause sooner or later that no that thirteen team might say it's like a two ol oregon and say that taught team was like a three loss auburn. You know that oregon's going to start complying saying we should have gotten in over that Other acc school. So when will it stopped. Where like no more complaining like on the answer. The answer is the answer is never William the the ncaa basketball tournament takes sixty eight teams when you include the first Playing games and there's always some coach and there's always some dick vitale standing on his head usually on selection sunday crying about one of his buddies who didn't get in so there's always going to be that complaining and there's And we have a coach on it in a couple of minutes who who had a legitimate complaint in two thousand fourteen about getting left out But there will always be complaint. It doesn't matter whether there's two four six eight or or or sixty Somebody's always gonna feel wrong heading to the break here. We are coming back with more of your phone calls. Also gary patterson head coach. Tcu will join us next to and listening to paul. Finebaum show podcast. We welcome all you back. And we're particularly happy to welcome back to our show coach. Gary patterson nationalist join us throughout the build up to last season. The head coach at tcu. He's been the head coach since two thousand and coach. It's great to have you here. Good afternoon and i hope the offseason whatever whatever you can make out of it has been good. Good afternoon to you. Well thank you yeah. It's great to be back you know it's June is a little different june. You know with all twenty seven straight days of really camps and all the things you doing you know official visits unofficial visits workouts but It's been it's all been good. Weight coaches were pretty resilient. So you kind of You kind of do your thing and whatever they lay down we we abide by. So here we go. I'm sure you'd be rather rather sitting there strumming your. Your guitar obeys better than talking about whether we are going to have a season or not isn't a coach. Oh yeah there's there's no doubt at all be honest. We did that where we are. It's just it's been just great. I get now being around the kids having a camp Having the families come in you know now in into our Officers and being able to meet the young men and their families. And do all that i mean. That's you know we we. We've grown up doing that in this profession and you know most coaches are people persons so To have an opportunity to Get back to doing that is Is really been priceless. So we're we're excited coach. Get to the big issue in college. Athletics right now. And that's the playoff. And i mean you've only been asked forty thousand times since twenty. Fourteen your thoughts on the on the playoff considering how close. Tcu cain that year. But you know it's going to be twelve we there's still some unknowns out there but what is your view of of what's been laid out so far well. I pinna advocate of you know building in making the playoffs bigger more than four teams. Just because i think it's just hard what does get to the end of the day that you to pick. Thank you can always pick one. Maybe two but i think the for everybody ever since we've been we've started in fourteen. I think really quality teams have been left out. And you know everybody likes the cinderella. One that you didn't know so you know the the only complications you have a little bit. Just you know the academic model make sure that You know the guys can do finals as we do everything and You know recruiting and all the rest of it. But you know. I think widen the the swap as far as the different universities. That could be a part of it. And i think all of us feel like you'd have you got more of a chance to be able to get into it so i think it's going to be good for college football when we cook. How important is it to be in the playoff in relation to everything else especially recruiting. Well i think it makes a big difference right now to six teams and those same four to sixteen able to say they're the ones have been getting in and and they've had advantage in recruiting. Think by knowing that now the twelve teams or eighteen. Or whatever it is. We're whatever this ends up in Have an opportunity. I think that gives everybody a chance. I think it it kinda evens out the playing field a little bit when it comes to that and so You know The one group that i did. I do about and and just because i think it's such eh Reward for these guys is just the bowl system. i think that's that's big Because kids get an opportunity to have an experience and go play and so We've got we've got to figure out how to be able to do both of them so that everybody so everybody gets an opportunity to have success at the end of the year but outside of that you know it's best way to do any of it is just to win. So that's what i've been working on. Sit you know. We've been in cavs for getting players possibly get in here and then coming up with the plan how you can go win a lot more games than we lose so chatting with coach gary patterson of tcu coach the other issue everyone knows is the name image and likeness. We are pretty close to it. Going into factor in a number of states whether the nc double can figure it out or not is up in the air. How how do you think that's going to affect the present day and future of college athletics. Well i think the transfer Situations have even effect. You know it still..

"Just interested in your thoughts. It's going to be solved. It's not going to be solved. How serious it seems to me. Very unfortunate to have a really good team have to sit out a week and then plated first game if they're from georgia for example in washington state in home games in college. Football is is really really about. Yeah i read that about jason gain. He was right about that That's the flow right now. Billie and i think it's convenient reason why they're moving on that. They don't know what to do with all these contracts. I think they should just blow everything up and and start from scratch. But i think it's a terrible idea to to go to a neutral sites on the second week You know the neutral site games are not even great for the semifinals and the finals. But they certainly don't need to be played Weeks two and three to preserve the the bowl system. Well yeah initially they are remembering. You understand this They have contracts with all these bowl games. And i think that's the only way going to placate down but my feeling is. Hey guys thanks. Thanks a lot but this is how we're doing it but you know every time you think the college football leaders take a big step forward They back up a little bit. Okay listen i question about mississippi. I've to foot the question. Of course i question. What makes the women's golf team so good at all. Almost coach must be great. That's usually wh a. And i'm certainly not a golf expert. But normally it it is because of that there are also a lot of. I think a couple of things may golf teams. Great the coaches critically important. Also the locale. Where do you practice. What type of courses do you have access to. And i think that's always important factor and whether Let me i mean if you went to play golfing in the philadelphia area. You can only play a much shorter amount of time. Where if you go to if you go in this sippy You can be out there. Maybe ten months out of the year kids sport and well uh it it it usually it has been. Yeah golf right now. And it's you know the There are exceptions. Of course. But i i mean you you you learn how to play golf at about four years old. I mean with professional tutors and golf camp. It's hard to roll out of bed and become a professional golfer. that's interesting its final question about football team. You were talking on a number of weeks ago about teams that might breakthrough arkansas and missouri. Were to to mention and you know a few years ago. I would have put ole miss and those two schools kind of in the doghouse are struggling to the fifty fifty seasons and i wondered what ole miss is not doing or am i missing something. I'm sort of almost fans. Yeah well i think what they're trying to do. Shore up the defense The defense has been the problem at all miss for a couple of years and last year. The offense you know really could play with anyone in the country. But the defense couldn't couldn't stop teams They had elite against auburn. They had elite against lsu and they lead both of those games getaway. The alabama game was attract me but they have a good defensive coordinator dullness. He's a former maryland head coach but ultimately they just they need better player. I mean they're getting them but I'm not sure they have enough broker. Thank you bill. Good to hear from you. Pleasure william is up next in louisiana. Hello william you're on the air. I like to talk about the toolman playoff deal. Sure and like you know how like it's like it's twelve million.

First i think that gregg allman family is going to charge at man. And i l. fees for using greg pitcher from the seventy as his photo. And that's all i have to say. Ben it is up next. Hello bennett mr on. How are you doing great. Good afternoon after saying mack jones in practice that new england and march alabama realistically how successful things he can be trying to beat out stood up and newton for the job. Well i don't think he'll start right away but ultimately he will. I mean that's why they took him in the first round but Based on what i hear Unless cam gets hurt. I think cam start the beginning of the season and then it's really difficult to predict. I think the patriots will will be a lot better this year. But for him. To supplant cam newton right away i think would take you know would be pretty dramatic. Thank you for the call Let's continue with russell who was up. Russell go right ahead. Thank you for the call. And you're on the air at call. What do you think. Five star quarterback goal american machine taylor adam tennessee correct about him Has he has. He signed with tennessee. Yet he's actually been going over all those nation our so he is Has he committed her signed. Is my question. Committed to tennessee. He played for the clear eagles last year. Okay well i listen i. I think i've said this before. I'll say it again i. I'm not recruiting expert. And i'm not going to try to pretend i am i've heard most of these guys But until they they show up and do something. It's it's pure speculation on whether i mean. I've seen a lot of five-star quarterbacks out to be heisman trophy candidates. Now i've seen some five store quarterbacks. Turn out to be bus. We have a lot going on and we start of course with a familiar theme on this program. We've been talking about it now for several weeks in chicago today. The meeting has just wrapped up and what happened bill. Hancock the executive director who was here a week ago metromedia afterwards. It was emphasized that we just haven't had. We haven't received the feedback that that we need in order to make a decision and of course. This meeting was never intended to be a decision making meeting. And neither is the next week's board meeting but it became very clear that people just need more time to. I'll use the word socialize. The proposal with people on campus. As you think about it this is a big deal and and Everyone needs to have a voice in in in what happens and there just hasn't been time to have that have that voice be heard meanwhile back to the present world. We are doing great good afternoon. I just wanted to ask you about quarter football and How do you think florida's football team through this year. I think florida great I think have chance to have a tendency season. I don't think they can go above that. Nor am i anticipating them to go to the championship game because of the schedule they have alabama home. They play georgia in jacksonville. And i think everyone in vegas right now would which strongly suggested they'll be reasonable underdogs in both. Thanks for the call appreciate it. Let's talk to mitch next south carolina. Hello mitch uncle. How are you today. Great mitch you. I am wonderful. I think i deserve a chance to respond to someone. Call me out yesterday. Sure well. Whistles blow Here's Gary Patterson Previous plays under further review potential Target Target. Notre Dame has already lost one defender for targeting today. Marisa Leah foul back up outside linebacker. Further rule not only going for this game but won't play the first half of next week against Clemson. I didn't think that there was maybe there's a hit on the quarterback, but Gibbs is going out of bounds and was actually thrown out of bounds. So maybe they're thinking of late, but look for target target watching a replay current Highnesses hit on Jeff Simms, but he separated the 10 on Jeff Sins that is Not gonna be targeting. That is a football play Hurt Highness lowering the boom on since he released that football came in right on to Jeff Simms, and he did drop the head a little bit. Ryan, not a lot dipped in a little bit into the chest of soon's as he released the ball. I would be surprised. They called this targeting because Jeff since also jumps right before right, throwing the football. So that made it look even worse When Highness hit him because he was completely off the ground. He did lower himself an impact, but he didn't drop the crowd. He just kind of he lowered. That impact it would be. It would be a touchy targeting call. If it goes against my name and put them in a really good brands. Further review There is no targeting all the play first. No bias here by society. Think that was the right? Yeah, I mean, I honestly feel I feel lucky that I didn't play in this day and age. "Is the Sunday gun slinger. When you have to shoot, you don't talk. Let's do it. Tom Erman was hired in Austin, Texas, to make sure the Longhorns were no longer also rans in the Big 12 and to put them back atop the power rankings in college football. And once again placed along war into the position to compete for a national championships. That's why Tom Herman was brought in. That's why they backed up the truck for him and gave him all the cash and Tom Herman's connections inside the state of Texas were supposed to deliver massive recruits that Mac Brown and Charlie strong were unable to get Mac Brown at the end of his career. Equate them into victories. The Texas Longhorns went into yesterday's game against TCU ranked in the top 10 despite needing a minor miracle TTO beat Texas Tech the week prior coming back from down, 15 points the waning minutes against Tech. So this was their chance. To stop on TCU and on rank team and once again assert their nominates in the big 12, and you know what ended up happening. Tom Herman got exposed again. "Just Hello discussing this morning. Have you ever made a online pizza order? Mistake? That was devastating to you, Uh, both me and my morning producer, Nick. You guys have accidentally ordered pizza from Domino's. That is trying to put toppings on it. But just ordered a plain cheese. It is if you collect a build your own. It is so easy to just a push. Add cart before you with solidified all the toppings. I designed. It was also at the end of a long day of drinking right there, so I took a lot. I've ordered a lot of never gotten a little cheese pizza. After all my troubles, dominoes being bonds, my house and I'm asleep on the couch like, Well, that's oh, pizza. Yeah, I didn't want you and then I open it. Just a cheese pizza online like Kevin McCallister from home alone. What is this? I'm ready to angrily call Domino's and slur my complaint at them. Then I'm like, Hang on. Let me check the check the order here and then I go back and see that I just ordered a plain A build your own cheese pizza. Last time I did that day I was I was in college and I was spent all my money had no money. So I get your just experimenting. No. I'd get a chicken and cheese pizza that I put my own. How the paint goes on it. Put some bacon on. They're getting away. The other kids were doing it. That is. Yeah, I've thought about that. But that is Build your own. Gary Patterson, You've got to be 50 something years old. Right? You're you've climbed to the near top of the college football coaching ranks. You can't be a stupid person. How can you think that it is acceptable? Maybe he grew up listening. Dan W. A. S P Park and You can't miss In this politically charged climate, even if it's a teachable moment,.

I received a call from my, my good friend, rock historian, Gary Patterson, only to find out the next morning that Gary had passed away around five or six PM the previous day, and I remain quite certain the Gary and I talked about a half an hour in the evening around seven or eight PM. I remember that because it was it was dark and the sunsets typically around eight thirty that time of the year, so I was regaling of the story at gyms request. And Gary said several things to me. Now that seem rather peculiar. Like he said Richard, you're, you're a real cool. Dad, and he also said, you and I are a really big deal. This was Gary's way of building up. Always trying to make us feel good about ourselves. He was just a real raw kind of guy and the next part never forget, as long as I live, because that was the moment. Gary suddenly and for the first time in the fifteen years I had known him. He got a little churlish with me. When I asked him if he'd be celebrating Memorial Day weekend with barbecue. And he said, there will be no barbecue. He actually kind of snapped at a little bit. And that's one of the last things he ever said he hung up the phone and then later at his funeral. I discovered he spent his last hours shopping for procuring assembling. Barbecue? Putting it together in his back deck. There would be no barbecue. Indeed. So I told him that story again, and we shared a few others anyway. And wondering whether there might be enough people out there who experienced something similar telephone call from the great beyond. Is there enough out there to hang show on just a suggestion? It's open lines. You'll decide alternately where to steer this mothership. "George Noory. You can't interrupt Louis at all. We've got amazing open lines for you. Now, we're going to end the program tonight with a very special interview with our dear friends, the late are Gary Patterson and Ray bans Eric from the doors. An incredible story about Jim Morrison is still alive. I got six robo calls today had it with them. Six are finally downloaded an app from my phone company. And I'm going to see if we can stop some of them. But I gotta tell you in March alone Americans received five point two billion automated, robocalls, maybe you were included with that their computer generated phone calls. They're making some people stop answering the phone altogether. People are just done because you know, we used to trust unknown phone calls. Right. Something's happening -mergency. Maybe you're getting a call from someplace not anymore. It's crazy. Call your cellphone company and just say do you have an app, which will help stop some of these robo calls. I'm going to try this out. I'll let you know in the weeks to come if it works or not, but I six today and then to came in after I put the app in, but they the shit shows up as spam and stuff like that. And then you block it, but they keep coming back with phone numbers. It's amazing. But if you've had robocalls, check in we've got open lines for you. And we're ready to go next on coast to coast AM. It's so nice now that the kids are asleep. Cheers. We got the kids are house a stable income checking off all the boxes, but there's one box. We haven't checked off life insurance. With Urban Meyer's return near, Ryan Day has a chance to prove he can lead Ohio State

"Is urban Meyer coaching this game. He's not. I mean, you know, I don't know if he's shadow coaching or something like that, but he won't be on the sidelines. We'll not be on the sidelines Ryan day is the gentleman who is coaching Hieaux state even though or been was allowed to coach during the week. Right? Day's gonna be there on the sidelines. It's fair to ask whether that has any effect here because Gary Patterson on the other side lines of very good coach. I don't think this has much of an effect. I know Ryan day is an urban, but he's probably going to be a head coach soon. He's pretty good in his own. Right. So for my money, is it fair to just throw that aside cast that aside as being any kind of competitive disadvantage for state. Yes, it is a competitive disadvantage snot have their longtime and current head coach on the sidelines because if it's close, if something major happens in a major call needs to be made a reminders more familiar with the protocols in the talents and the in game situations that he's been in before, which Ryan day cannot draw on the same. But but but is it enough of a quote unquote disadvantage that we should really be talking about? I don't. I don't think it is here. I mean, it hasn't manifested itself against Oregon state and Rutgers, but that's to be expected. I think it's competitive disadvantage. It's going to alter the game significantly. But if you're looking at advantages disadvantages right now, Gary Patterson has an advantage over Ryan day. Sure. Okay. So we sort of disagree on that was sort of. I don't worry as much about it doesn't sound like your either, but we both agree to some extent. It's a little bit of a disadvantage fine
