"Duck? What the hell? Well, George Lucas. It was heavy Spider-Man in your stable, with having Fantastic Four Iron Man. The ones that have all now become ultra popular are first oops. Thank God blade came out. You know, it's part of what I'm talking about in my conflict. Movie history is thank God Blake came out and legitimized that maybe the marvel body of work, you know, that they have this incredible mythology that is very cinematic and you could make it into movies without making any money, not if they die at the box office like how are deducted? Yeah, I fear for the eternals. And if they're putting it as a linchpin for this next phase and the next group and it's supposed to be super important, I don't feel they've set that up. I fear somebody is like, hey, they love all our stuff. So just put it out. I don't know. Because the other problem is Black Widow was so so. Shang-Chi was really good, but not necessarily as memorable as some of the earlier movies arguably. And the TV shows were really good. And I love the TV shows. But the I know they went to the high with endgame. So you have to start low again and build back up. We have all new people. I get all that. But I don't think they've been coming out of the stable after two years and just pow pow and everybody's talking about it. And loving it and the stuff. It's been so, so. And I fear that the eternals is going to kill things in their struggle to get back up. Even though Spider-Man's right after that. That's kind of what I'm hoping is that if you think that, you know, all the marvel movies that went into Avengers Endgame, they weren't all great. The first couple hulks were pretty stinky. They kept story and without the magic actor that was going to make it work like Mark Ruffalo has done. Iron Man, first one great second one, not so good, third one. No, maybe second one good third one now. They kind of went downhill. You know what I mean? Looks like that's just not a good enough villain, even played by usually a real scenery chewer in terms of why I lost his name. Darn it. Danny or something like that. Yeah. Machete. Maybe it was Gary Oldman Gary Oldman. Was that the type of played Russian so, by the way, I just watched the professional and it's one of the best movies I've ever ever professional Gary Oldman sorry Leon, which is, why am I showing Reno and Natalie Portman as like the waif that is far too old for her, right? So back to this, I hope that we'll have that same thing that maybe we'll have a couple misfires and that.

"Okay. That's Gary Oldman. They're playing Herman Mankiewicz or Manc. Amy. What did you think? Yes. So you might think that David Fincher making a film about the writing of Citizen Kane is a little bit out of his normal wheelhouse, which it kind of is. But the script is actually written by his dad. His dad was a longtime journalist for Life magazine. And he wrote this movie about the writing of Citizen Kane, which I'm sure anybody who's like a huge film lover knows there's this huge debate about who was really the brains behind the script, you know? Was it Orson Welles? This boy genius who just came to Hollywood? Or was it? Gary Oldman's character? Who You just heard a lot of Herman Mankiewicz? Who was this brilliant drunk who'd been there in Hollywood for already over a decade, But he was sliding his way down the ladder, and the truth is honestly like there's never been a real debate about it. It's just film. People have been taking sides ever since, Like Pauline Kael in Peter Bogdanovich got into it. S so what This film is instead is you're watching make very drunk or trying to be drunk as much as he can laid up in bed with his foot in a cast writing the script while flashing back to Something that did happen, but didn't actually really affect the making of Citizen Kane. It's interesting. This one was like so heavily researched and classic Hollywood. I love it, like every single line could be, it could spit onto its own movie. But it's based on this really false premise, which is that mink was motivated by the 1934 governor election here in California. To me. The best part of this movie is actually Amanda Seyfried. She plays a Marion Davies, who people and I was like the girlfriend of William Randolph Hearst was kind of slandered through time by Citizen Kane, which played her as this talentless idiot. And the real Davies is like this kind of charming socio path. And Amanda Seyfried really gets to that. Like, if you ever want to read her memoir, you will learn all about how Marion Davies really tried to meet Hitler just for fun. It's It's a really weird character. And I think a medicine he doesn't incredibly Oh, I would read that. It is it. Oh, you would love this store. You would love this medal and you have to read her book. Oh, my gosh. Okay, so that's a lot to digest. And so would you say yes or no in terms of whether it's worth our time. Oh, I'm a huge nerd for this stuff. So I would say yes, just because I loved all the tiny references. But it is based on such a fake idea like itself that that Mayko. It's cared at all about this election. You know, he was really actually anti union it, so it's hard to kind of get behind that. And I will say Gary Oldman as good as he is. He's a little bit too old for this part because her mom make her wits. Who's risking a lot at this time was only 43. Gary Oldman looking like he's at the eight. The end of his life has nothing to lose. You kind of lose a little. You lose a little bit of the steaks that make this is putting himself in. Sean, What did you think? Was flawless. In terms of this craftsmanship, however, the story it's a bit cold and off putting. I love David Fincher as a director, and he kills it. He's in rare form. I mean everything he does. Is top notch. It's a beautiful looking film. It's edited very well. I mean, like I said, cinematically, it's flawless execution, but the story left me cold. I was just I never connected by the time the film ended, I needed a telescope to connect. I was just so distant from it. It just didn't work for me. I thought the acting was just OK, Amanda see, Fred No, everyone's raving. I thought she was very overrated. Just okay, performance. I just I just wish there was more to it. That made me care about anyone. Anybody in this movie? I will never, ever watch this movie again. It just did nothing for me. Hmm. But would you watch Citizen Kane again? No, that maybe the problem I e been told. Yeah, but no, no, I haven't appreciated, but but I've been told my whole life I was told all throughout film school, you know, you know, I bought into the story of someone tells you something over and over again. You begin to believe it, but I have my own eyes and I've watched it several times and I understand that the execution of it all, but it's just not a very entertaining a great film to make. Wow. Heresy. Heresy. It's just not I would watch 1000 other movies before I watch Citizen Kane. All right. Let's move on to another movie that you might want to watch more than once. It's called Nomad Land and its stars Frances McDormand as a woman named Fern. Who leaves behind her old life to travel around the west in her van, and the trailer is very spare. It doesn't give us much insight into into what's happening there. But she's just walking through her van community like a campground, and here's a clip. Weyland.

"Streaming service up to Netflix numbers right now they have about 36 38 million subscribers. Disney Plus has 73 million. Netflix has close to 200 million worldwide. So if they do this and HBO Max gets up to 100 million subscribers by the end of next year, this really boosts those numbers. $15 a pop for each of those subscribers were talking $18 billion in screaming alone each year, just from HBO Man. It's becoming the weather, too. Big networks, right will be. This is like when TV came along in the fifties, you know, and, um, it's it's You know, the NBC ABC CBS model, It's gonna be Netflix is going to Warner Brothers, maybe Apple or something along those lines and Yeah, I think. Is it me a seat at the table for traditional broadcast. But that's going to be for people who, too, You know, don't have the wherewithal or the money to pay that screaming feed Jason Nathan's and in Hollywood this morning on 700. W W. With Sloane E. Wells have some streaming stuff to get to today, And let's do that, Um, you know, we talk about movie theaters and the like. But in addition to watching all the Warner Brothers movies if you have HBO next year, lots of new stuff to stream on the platforms that already have this stuff. Like what? Yeah, So if we're not what I meant new stuff That's coming out. What's that this weekend? I'm gonna watch this weekend this weekend s o today. And I think this is a movie That's right up your alley. It's ah Netflix movie called Make And this is getting a whole lot of Oscar buzz. It's ours. Gary Oldman as Herman Mega winces. Who's the guy who wrote Citizen Kane along with Orson Welles and won an Oscar for it? So this is all about the writing of that, and now the history of that is is not as easy and as that were, you know, they wrote it together, and then the film goes on to claim There's a lot of back story behind this, and then some of it's true. Some of it's not. But this is a fascinating movie about the making of one of the biggest classics of all time, Citizen Kane, and it is very, very well done. Gary Oldman is fantastic, and I think going to get an Oscar nomination for this You also have a man inside Fred Lily Collins as well and some other great performances by Charles Dance in a bunch of other people, So, um, it's really good. Directed by David Fincher. It's in black and white, which you know is not in everybody's cup of tea. Um and each. You know he's trying to get very creative with this. It's Ah, you know, it's a movie about a very classic. Fantastic movie, So he tries to really AMP up his game and get kind of interesting with Hey, does stuff with the sound design as well. Which I have to say actually really bothered me if you have. If you're watching this and you have a surround sound system, I would suggest taking the surround sound speakers off. Because there's something really weird that they do with the sound design. And it makes it really echoey and kind of distracted, man. All right, Good. Good to note. There s O make. It's about the making of Citizen Kane. I totally check that out. I haven't seen Citizen Kane in years, but It's either by and and now I'm curious to go back and watch it again after after watching this and getting a lot of the backstory, which again is not all true, but it's since based in interest. But the film itself is manque is is it's the script is really, really good, the dialogue. It's very funny. It's very quick. On bit's fascinating. Alright, so rose, But I don't wanna spoil for you, but rose, but anyway hey, Jason, what else on then? Okay, so other things to watch this weekend is I'll tell you about a couple. Syria's that air coming out, but I can't really recommend them. One is Selina the series based on the popular Kahane pop star who died in the nineties and was huge. I mean, absolutely just a huge, huge star that I think a lot of Americans didn't really know about on go. This is a story about her life. Unfortunately, given who she was and how big she wasn't how important she is to the Mexican American community. Um, this series is not does not do her justice. Uh, on D I can't really recommend it. It's Hand. Yeah, Yeah, This is that because it's really bad. Are you just being a racist? Um, yeah, both because that's always the defense is you don't like it because you're a racist. No, it's just not good. Yeah, it's just not good, And that's unfortunate. I think because, um and I read a review by very prominent Mexican American writer who said that, you know, The shame of this is that they? You know, we don't get a whole lot of stuff for for Mexican Americans like there's not a whole lot of theories that really speak to us, And here's something that's going to speak to us, and we're going to watch it because we want to watch stuff about our people. But when you give us bad stuff, and then we say it's bad, and nobody watches it. And then you don't give us anything else. Uh, so here's the real catch 22. So it was like the ones that the wonder Woman movie with the director or so because everyone's a sexist know it just sucked, right? Exactly. Yeah, that's that's That's the shame of it in a nutshell. Um, Also did I see Bryan Cranston has something this weekend is the next week and I really wanted to like this because I love Bryan Cranston, some Showtime It's a kind of legal crime drama called Your Honor, in which he plays a judge in New Orleans..

"That's true. Yeah, it was like that. Maybe it was a ghost and mr. Vampire them but I do remember all being tied up in that mythology. But yeah hopping goes hopping vampires. We just need more hopping monsters. I feel I agree. We also need more vampire watermelons, which are also a thing watermelons. Yes. I learned this from Pratchett and I thought this is ridiculous. We must go and look it up. So I looked it up there watermelons that have some red markings on the Rind which apparently some very superstitious people regard as patients of vampirism and they they don't seem to do much other than roll around and make sort of like Burrell noises, but like in practice words, I think it was Jeff. Perhaps they suck back. Passing. That's a good one. I don't remember that for my project reading. But yeah, a vampire watermelons vampire fruit in general or that's going to be a kids story waiting to be told Shirley. Okay. One thing that I love about vampires, which is I don't know if it's going to single me out as the old one. But I really really love that historically a lot of the the famous vampires have been male. And what I loved is that you kind of have the almost the Femme Fatale type off. Tripe where the man is using his sexuality his like just innate sexiness to seduce these women off and I just found that it was really fun because most of the time women in these kinds of roles, you know, it's like oh women use their sexuality as a kind of getting what we want or you know, that kind of thing but vampires showed that men could do the same thing that men could use their sexiness to get what they want. And really when I was waiting for you to bring up Gary you are all waiting for me to bring up Gary Oldman not want to disappoint dead. But that's the thing. Like it's just it seems like in historically a lot of stories that we see have, you know, whatever the the sexual creature who is a you know representation of evil or not. She's you know, some kind of Eve figure or something attempting temptress kind of thing vampires to me showed the opposite that we could see that same as men being just as God damn sexy and naughty and tempting as as the kind of traditional Eve like temptress same thing that for me is what I've always loved about vampires and you know, Lucy likes Gary Oldman. I mean I was I was definitely a spike girl from Buffy. Oh, yes. That's right. I mean, yeah like so hard. Yeah. That's what I really loved about them bias. I also really love that and I love getting two slightly subvert it with Ruthven and Riverside because.

Mayer who puts on a strict diet and gives her barbiturates amphetamines setting in motion the substance abuse problem that she will struggle with for the rest of her life but most of the movie is set in nineteen sixty nine long after her Hollywood heyday and mere months before her death at the age of forty seven Judy is now broke and virtually homeless dragging herself from one crummy Ellie club performance to another we meet her eldest child Liza Minnelli at a house party and also Judy's third husband Sydney loft who takes custody of their two young children well she reluctantly books a gig at the talk of the town night club in London although she's devastated at being separated from her kids Judy has little choice but to work overseas were her fans can still be counted on to turn out in full force. in London Judy's depression and insomnia quickly take over she pops pills skips rehearsals and nearly misses opening night but when she stumbles into the spotlight and starts crooning by myself and the trolley song her confidence come surging back and she enjoys having an appreciative crowd again. one night after a show Judy feeling lonely the friends an adoring couples Stan and Dan and joins them for a late dinner at their apartment in a touching scene damn played by Andy Nyman reminds Judy how much she means to her many gay fans sweet this you can't seem. sometimes I spy to get out there.

And it didn't really get much attention back in Kenya. And we knew of it to a level is just like, nah, nah. Really, not fos say king of the hill. Ran from nineteen ninety seven to two thousand ten shit, right? Obviously probably jumped the shark well before two thousand and ten as many shows of this sort of format do. I think king of the hill was. Disjointed from my sort of experiences as a Brown Bill in our stray, Leo. We what's it together? Incre-? We did we did try wants to together. But just just a my childhood refinement. You. We were barely allowed to citizens. So what? Yeah. Right. What's wrong with the Simpsons? It's the most BG thing other. Even though I'm pretty sure I've seen many of my uncles. Choke. They kids out like did like Herman did with bought. That's probably the most relatable thing I've ever seen. But yes, so I guess it's even that's only days it wasn't that controversial the Simpsons right on. I think just in general because it did do things that went out at the time. It wasn't necessarily welcomed in the living rooms of families. Strange. I mean, ethnic families. Sorry, we used to watch the Simpsons. Our remember I was a kid. We'd just sit there with the whole family and watch it really that. Again, we watched raunchy music videos together tip drill with your family. Not to that extent. The clean version of tutorials. Really, my my family is so culturally and religiously repressed that they would actually blame us kids that the sex is happening on TV. Not like that made no sense at all. And they would get angry at us that it was happening. Like if we will do it to happen. Well, Morenz didn't really kill always on TV unless as long as got to watch the news on whatever programs. I think when they first started doing that will you know, they they needed that boost needed that prestige. I don't think that they do incredible original programming now. So I think they have evolved me on the need for this. But you know, hopefully, we'll see this again. And hopefully with you know, fingers crossed. It would be amazing some of the same people buying them. The costing was extraordinarily. It calls one one of my weirdest. Most real set fits experiences at empire was the day. Or, you You know, know. had no real awareness of my surroundings or indeed anything, and it's the most incoherent I've ever been. I think at one point I fell asleep. "I would never come home alive. Right. Jimmy never asked me to kill anyone before. And that's when he knew that he wasn't coming back. Yeah. So and then at the end of the film, you get this incredible. This incredible thing it was shocking. When I saw the first time, they break the fourth wall. When he's on the stand at the very end of the film, and the everyone's in the courtroom, and he's just literally pointed his finger at paulie. And at deniro, you know, and and basically condemned them. Yeah. And then he stands up and breaks the fourth wall. And does this direct address to the camera, and you've had this beautiful narration to the whole film? But now it's directly at the camera coming from rail yoting says, and then it was all over. Yeah. Right. Now, I'm just a regular schmuck. And he's living in some tract house. Yeah, he's on the witness protection. I went for I went for marinara oven for spaghetti marinara. I got egg noodles and catch him. Now. I'm just a regular sh- nook threat. He just picks up a newspaper is in his pajamas off that he masterpiece it's one of the greatest films full-time, and yet it's an incredible gangsta crime moose. That's why I say, it's really like three film. Yeah. Because it's got those three distinct chapters. I love them in. I was doing a little research on it. And it said the headline of the, you know, the sometimes you get these terrible terrible trailers that don't really match the film at all. Right. Because the trailers me just to sell the film, right? Yeah. And the trailers like the voice of God, you know, that guy what in the world. Oh, yeah. Mixed with high society that wasn't actually what he said. But you know, the the end of the goodfellas, and then there was a thing underneath it said three generations of gangster something like, and I was like, I'm. Onto something. That's awesome part of the tagline. So that's my number one. That's okay. And I mean goodfellas come on deserves older kudos and all the time. All right. I got a few more hair. We're gonna roll through this. This is another hidden gem to me. I don't know if you've seen that came out in like nineteen Ninety-one, Sean Penn. Gary Oldman incredible in this Ed Harris, Robin Wright Penn this has been she met when Pence cooled state of grace you seen this movie not in a long love this movie. It's it's about cops and robbers Sean Penn is an undercover cop who goes back to his hometown. And it's like again, it's like Philly or Boston thing, and he gets made in this mug with Gary Oldman, and at Harris's his brother and add Harris, the the cool calm collected mob Boston Gary Oldman his bat shit. Crazy. This is like young frenetic. Gary Oldman, like true romance. Yeah. You know, this look like white boy day, you know, that kind of Gary Oldman, I love. This movie so good of very violent such a hidden gem, great mob crime movies to see that. Check on our sure great choice. I had a couple of didn't quite fit that were my like eleven A and B movies. I went ahead. And it's to roll through catch me if you can and midnight run, I love midnight run. I love catch me. So catch me if I can I guess so flimflam it's kind of like a on the border. I yeah. That's why rights like, right? But it's not like a cone movie is con. I love what you. But you're right. We'll kind of fly through it because we talked about these too much midnight run so underrated Disney row, and whose children that's like a buddy movie buddy road film. And he's a what do you call them? Not a man hunter a bounty hunter. He's a bounty hunter did arrow is try counting for the mob. But Dennis Farina is a mob. It's mob. You're totally right midnight run phantasm screenplay of midnight run. If you study it is perfect. Yeah. The structure of that. Film is perfect. I love that movie. So I'm glad you did that one. Okay. I'm going to do a few more his women. Do I'm gonna do two of the topic two of the time. Baby. Driver facing Spacey film. I love I loved it..

"The nineteen ninety s. This is resign. Our cat. It was many years ago in the nineties. I was told that there was a great movie with Gary Oldman and. My agent said he wanted to talk to me. So we talked on the phone is really want you to do this. You're going to love it. I have the new script. Weinstein weinstein. Why don't we have dinner at the Beverly Hills hotel the polo lounge in United States? Oh, wow. Okay. This amazing. Gary Oldman, my favorite actor in the world. So I showed up, and then they said that Mr. Weinstein was see me upstairs. And I was like. And my heart was raised as oh. But he probably has the pants house apartment, and I didn't. But you know, in that first instinct is you're right instinct, don't don't go danger danger in. So we opened the door is white bathrobe on. And he said it was on. I can't move my neck my neck. I said I'll I got a great masseuse for you. And I can get a Susan. I started to back up. He goes, no is Ana any grabbed my hand. And he pulled it down to his. Wreck whatever I didn't see touch and hold it away. He was wearing just a bathroom about then he was at the door of his hotel. You were in the hallway I kind of like in the. We didn't even make it in new nose and put it down and I pulled away, and he goes on and like in my arm. You're making a very big mistake. And I said I'd never I'll never be that girl. So I left. Slowly thing started fall apart from me, you know, slowly, I mean, I worked with was suddenly it was like the TV movie. I was always doing features. And then it was like something would fall apart. And then there was this rap about me that it was difficult that it was like who's that? Who's saying that did he say he would destroy you? He didn't say those words to me. But he he said it too many other people there's a part in the film where someone is in dark shadow and their voices disguised. They worked with black cube the agent, and the film showed a list of people to be gone after and you were one of them. Yes. And he just flips me over in the middle of the Marco telling I hit, I bang my head on the side. I come up, and I'm I'm in there's Wilson. And I'm like, I'm Mona kill. I'm what I'm bleeding. I'm leading outta my I in it's but it's in there. It's nothing nothing unsafe. We both know and we get done, and we're breathing like two bulls. And Joel stands up and Joel there and Schumacher and Armagh Milton and are not I'll never forget, this aren't onset. This is why I love making movies, and they go you both got the role. Oh, wow. Wow. I couldn't I mean thinking about it. Now, I get even emotional thinking about like, I ran down that street down park. Screaming? Anybody would? And these are the days to like when I was. I I figured out a way after graduating from SUNY purchase how I wanna be around greatness. It'd be on feel greatness and acting. So I got a job as a night guy fill in at at a central park ho building Dustin Hoffman lived there. Steve Morton live there. It was. And I got to see Hoffman at least twice a day walk out an end of the Bill, and he was getting ready for like just unhook and Gary Oldman would walk by. And I'd be like, I'm gonna work. Would you someday? Gary Oldman, Michael Douglas, live next like these were people, you know. And and I remember Gary all those these were it was you know, that romantic time that you hope you never lose as an actor. Right. You know, I think if you lose it you just go do something else. You know? That's it though, something that we say all the time. If you don't think this is cool, then you should probably do something else. Because it should always be not every aspect is going to be the greatest thing in the world. But it's pretty cool and an exciting. You know, I think I do you work with somebody were very fond of no we've had here on this show. Catherine hardware. Luther talked how she she who know their special called her early. She was coming off of, you know, set designing hell, yeah. That's a it's a whole. She was in a whole other. It's it's crazy to think of you know, you come across you come across people in you. You just know they're special and new in the room with their Jeremy Renner, and I played Reuters in that thing he and you knew she was special you knew she loved actors and she loved the process of, you know, building, you know. And I that's to me. I that's what I become really fond of directors that they love actors that you bring stuff in. And you know, you're calling them at three in the morning are texting in at three in the morning, Tim, Ben, Pat, and and at three oh five about a fight scene. In boardwalk, you're hitting Catherine hard with about, you know, I think I I remember God crazy stuff. But I did and do. Played one of the two brothers that were from the beach, and I would go every morning on the way to the set down there and at a milk jug. And I'd go to go to the Pacific at put salt water in it, and I would pour all of my because salt water in the air like he'd been surfing that morning. You know, a that was the thing that dropped me in on on that character, you know? So, but yes, she special and we knew she was special. So what did you study at purchase? Well, it's a conservatory. So it's four years mandatory for years. So you're there with either with acting first year acting speech voice, and then you're studying the classics, everyone shit Shakespeare Strandberg Ibsen, do, you know, check off everything you just immersed in it.
