2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class
"Pro football hall of fame I introduce the class of twenty twenty their centennial class and I am pretty diverse group here going in so what Mike let's run through some of these yeah and and some of these are so these guys are before my time so before your time as well some guys we saw a play so let let let's have a couple of these first Paul tag Lee boots and he was the the commissioner who took over for Pete Rosell he was the bridge between Roselle and die and Roger Goodell who we have today certainly the took the baton did a lot of good things for the game for sure yeah I get that now I'm not surprised I guess that he got in considering E. took it to a different level with TV contracts made a lot of money for the game took it into a different era yeah he's one of those it's like why do not in already yeah comic Marvin Miller yeah baseball I was a little bit surprised by that one or is it some other ones Donnie shall and and cliff tires are both a little bit before my time I I read you know I know the teams of Donnie shell played on a wood heater he was for the Steelers teams that were just absolutely spectacular are you know click Harris was a cowboy enough said so those two guys get in our let's run through a couple other ones he Jim covert I remember him with the bears as an offense of linemen I don't remember Bobby Dylan who was a D. back for the Packers Austin Dillon Tate today they made the right call Jack I was a beast yeah okay and we we was on the the body Packers of assuming yeah I'll wait like even before that it was like ten years before the merger all really okay yeah see played like late fifties and into the sixties mid fifties yeah okay all right so don't reach sixties they'll go back a little bit at New York Jets tackle Winston hill not that familiar with him but lions defensive tackle out Alex Karras who was a great player and also went on to be an actor he was in blazing saddles which Mike if you haven't seen it is an all time classic a movie that would never get made today because it's incredibly politically incorrect and he was the father in Webster which one of your favorite TV shows yeah Webster Webster and Bobby don't fill but Alex Karras is also said suspended for an entire season for gambling on football did you know that yeah early sixties yeah I miss the season are Scott Chicago cardinals this it tells you how far back that goes tackle Duke Slater goes into the hall of fame Cleveland Browns wide receiver Max speedy bears defensive and and sprinkle near giants GM George young who I remember he was a he was a guy who was there during the Parcells run when Bella check was it a says that when they had an unbelievable group of assistance there and he drafted very well guys like Phil Simms some guys really under the radar at large Taylor helped really kind of build that team cell George young goes and we know bill Cowher a Jimmy Johnson they they got their surprises on TV this past weekend what do you think of Calar I don't I think ours I don't think he's all famous hourly there I think is like the on this list of qualified to talk about this from worry lines up with my viewing yeah I you know I know he won one he got to another any was there a long time it's a great story because he's he's a Pittsburgh guy grew up there you know all that good stuff but what what's she in for longevity you know I mean I don't know I'm a a are they considering like contributions as a broadcaster to that kid I mean he's not that good only has been doing it that long what is your is on an hour a week yeah exactly yes I know it not look exactly are the interesting thing is that they they're some the hall of fame centennial class was selected by a special Blue Ribbon panel which included hall of fame board selectors league historians hall of Famers and bill Belichick yeah so there were thirty eight finalists were chosen from a list of three hundred nominees over the past five months and the hall of fame class of twenty twenty comprised of modern era players will be selected in Miami beach on February first the day before the Superbowl so you're wondering like the word the wise all these you know older guys well the the guys you probably saw play we you know we'll be getting in that cell that was that's the way that that that check out but shall I do go back to die shell for a minute now and I'll get to the reason why you wanted to do this for for a couple reasons but he's the fifth member of that steel curtain team Joe Greene mean Joe green Jack Lambert Jack ham Mel blunt and now dot a shell goes in from that Pittsburgh team but I am we should probably place for people again which we will little back but one of the coolest things I I heard was the the audio conversation between Harold Carmichael and and David Baker who's the the president of the pro football hall of fame but Carmichael goes and he was at all decade nineteen seventy selection when he retired he held the league record with a reception and a hundred twenty seven consecutive games he had a touchdown reception on almost fourteen percent of his career touches that's awesome any finishes his career with really good numbers in any near where you know again it wasn't like it is today where they pass as much as they did but in a plane thirteen years and really that's a little bit misleading you really play twelve years that thirteen year with the cowboys only played two games but he had almost nine thousand yards seventy nine touchdowns averaged more than fifteen yards per catch he was a stud and from nineteen seventy three to nineteen eighty two no receiver had more receptions yards touchdowns are games played that's pretty awesome do you wonder why it took that long but it was great to see him get and I'll tell you the other guy I mention this before we took time out they get send that never played a down in the NFL yet maybe had more of an impact than any name that we just right off that's the sable what NFL films did for the National Football League what which Steve sable date with his dad add both local guys and of course if you you know NFL films right over there mount laurel what they did to promote the game of football in the sixties when it was no where near the number one sport the country I mean you had baseball you a boxing your college football all ahead of professional football what they did to highlight the game to shine a different spot like to be creative in an artistic with the way that you look at the game utilizing classical music slow motion yeah replays you different camera angles you name it what they did to change the way that people look at the game was nothing short of remarkable and a and it's a shame that it's happened posthumously Steve got to win the Elbe doctors father into the hall of fame at the times the was battling brain cancer but for him to get in I thought was flat out awesome yes not he yeah got it back everything's under the contributions that side you have still to this day yeah I mean he tell me somebody who is more deserving I'm telling you AP is deserving is anybody so the one that I and I know Jodie touched on this when I was coming and I was listening to him and he's dead on about this it's a real shame and I I don't know if it's gonna happen former night I I I really hope it does but it's a real shame that I Joe Klecko didn't get it again this year if if you're not familiar with me you know when you hear Dan Klecko on our air doing eagles post games and and like you work with during the football season a damn good friend of mine but Joe was a great player he's a local guy grew up in Chester went to temple but was a phenomenal player for the jets eat play from seventy to seventy seven to eighty eight and the first Jeez for five years of his career the sac wasn't even cactus that so and he was a guy who literally you could play everywhere he played the tackle he played nose tackle he played defensive end you could move asides yeah you can move in every single place on the football field and all the guy did was the lever and and it's unfortunate because nose tackles indeed tackles are gonna put up monster numbers think about you know a guy like Fletcher **** could have a big game but because he's at being occupied by two tacklers or maybe is not getting a sack he's just he's creating the pressure somebody else gets the sack that happens often times you know but it it but a lot of those years even look like I was playing end they can keep the sack is that in other words like for example I seventy eight he was a defense of an I. seven eighty he was a defense of an eighty one he was a defense of that then he moved more inside your starting in in eighty two eighty three and the rest of his career but I know Gary Myers of Jody had on earlier in his show was a guy who really pushed for kind of the way ray push for for a tiny the Donald you know in a domino kind of pushed we double push for Dawkins yet Dawkins yeah double push for doc hold on which bush for Dawkins Gary Myers push for collect but it's he didn't get a ton of votes in the US and and that's you know probably not a great sign but I hope at some point they come to their their senses and and Joe Klecko gets and but that was that was the one that kind of stood out to me I know you know drew Pearson went on his his harangue about not getting in but that was one that stood out so what what it since we're on this Mike let let's play the Carmichael again so this this is it the audio of the phone call David Baker calling Harold Carmichael and letting him know that after all these years because Carmichael's but after this for a long time after all these years he finally got it my great grandma and to hear that you're gonna have a bronze bust in canton Ohio hello all men you're going to be a member of the centennial class and we're we're gonna tell you and keep your legacy alive forever yeah or what you're talking okay thank you great that's pretty cool I mean I think that's a genuine reaction right there what you got from hell Carmichael and it's it's well deserved you know this isn't just some sympathy vote that this is a guy who deserve to be at and your was ahead of his time in terms of the size and was versatile what could catch a long ball was a great are you know fade end zone alley OOP I could go over the metal versatile could do almost anything and you know play the game at six foot eight we came out of southern a small school and went on to have some great years for short was very good the playoffs still had amazing career so happy
Astros, Yankees turn to bullpens for ALCS Game 6
"After a stellar outing from James Paxton led them to a game five win the Yankees turning to their bullpen for game six of the ALCS tonight in Houston Aaron Boone has yet to announce a starter planning to piece things together from his pen to try and force a game seven the Astros will do the same I think it's both teams trying to trying to get out and and trying to do it the best way we can you know with that some obviously a lot of guys go down this year and you know different different people not available so we'll just do our best to piece it together bonus had success using Chad green as an opener this season the yanks eleven and four in games he's opened Alex

"Myers here with you on the fan we go to five. Fifty nets basketball. Pregame starts here on the fan at ten minutes. Six minutes left to talk about a bunch of things joining us now give us a little bit more insight to one baby on bow from the Pittsburgh post gazette. Ed bouchette joins us here on et Jody McDonald Gary Myers here. How are you doing today on great guys? Thank you. Eddie you hanging out with cookie at the pool this afternoon. You know, cook stand at some place on a on a on a highway out there, a Marriott. I am at Jacksonville beach scary beach bar in Jacksonville. Nice. Let me go to Jacksonville. You've got to go to the beach. These Pittsburgh is. Can you blame them? I mean, they get out of Pittsburgh, and it's like a beach. Yeah. Yeah. Take advantage. Got it. And we talked to run earlier about. A lot of stuff with lady on bell. But where where do you think? The Steelers go from here. Since a relief in the locker room that this is behind them in the fact that James Connors done so well this year. Is it just add aside Atta mind, or do you think there's still some resentment going forward, especially when he gets when the Steelers get to the playoffs? Nah. I think it's relief. Gary just to have this whole thing over with are. They don't wanna talk about it anymore. They're happy not to talk about it anymore. They. You know, there was a lot of ups and downs. Is this thing went on? And and you know, guys like me or in their constantly ask him about it. And they they tire. You know, Conners our guys doing well if bell had come in. He would have been as backup would have been nice insurance policy. They don't have that. Now, they have to keep Belle. Are they have to keep Connor healthy? But, you know, hey, everybody says that about the, you know, they're great players have coffee. The Steelers of now one five in a row and put themselves right in the conversation with the cheese and the patriots who who stumbled last week. Coverings teams such a long time. What what kind of feel do you have for the run that the Steelers essentially make a in January, assuming things stay on the current course. No win the division and potentially even get a first round. Bye. Yeah. You know, Gary, they look very bad early on. They were one to one the defense. Didn't look very good. The offense is up and down. If you had a lot of moving parts on defense new players, they move guys around which positions and it took awhile. And the defense is client pretty good right now better than I've seen it number of years and the offense is dynamic. So you gotta put them right there. They have a tough road here. They have to play the chargers they have to play New Orleans. They have to play New England. So, you know, it's not an easy road here. But uh. Let me ask you a question. I don't know the answer. Do I ask it that? Usually a pretty good way to do this. Mike Tomlin has been the head coach for what? Fifteen sixteen years now. And he sometimes comes under fire happened to be a fan. I think he's overly critiqued and the like, but one thing that Steelers have done over the last ten or fifteen years is David very good to draft, and they get guys who not necessarily their first pick turned into more than just contributors some superstar level players and the like how much input is Mike Tomlin hab on the Steelers draft some coaches have more than others like ballot. Check some have very little in. It's all the general manager and his staff how much influence does the coach of on the Steelers draft a lot Jody ever. I mean, the last three coaches know cower, Tom, and they've all had big inputs in the draft that they have you know, they they call it a team thing. But you know, I was once told the coach gets what he wants and. You know, he he does he he is a big part of that draft. So how much credit should the general manager begetting? He's just giving the coach what he wants. He's not a figurehead. He's they worked together. They really do. They have always done that here in Pittsburgh. Dan, rooney. God bless them. Always told me said, it's a team thing if it's not a one man thing, and and they work on it like that. So they really do. Kevin colbert. Mike Palmer travel around to the workout. You know, senior days those kind of things together. And I do believe it's it's it's a team thing. But the coach has a lot of input here. And what is what is it like to cover team never have to worry about a coaching? Search. Concert to Gary who turned thirty two. Two. It's nice. It really is the most coaches searches we had to go through our coordinators. And I'll never, you know, poor my poor buddies up in Cleveland. They're used to it. It's kind of nice. You know, who the guy is is going to be there forever. My friends, you know, cover the jets and for many years, I was kinda riding shotgun with with the median Mindy, Sean some of these coaching changes. And before that, you know, the late great Palmdale, and it would just drive them out of their minds that on to start over again, so terrible. And you know, what I've often said, Gary, why don't people follow the Steeler kind of a blueprint more often. You know? I mean, they find a good coach. And they stay with them. You don't switch. Personnel. You don't switch. You know? Philosophies. Had the same philosophy for me. Since I've been doing it thirty five years and more. Well, I think part of it is is maybe especially in New York. This is so much pressure. That's put on by the media and not the team ever make decisions based on what's in the newspaper on talk radio shows. But there's no grace period in New York and. Coach like half on two Super Bowls. Then has a down period. He's outta here where Mike Tomlin can have a couple of bad years. And nobody's talking. The Steelers got to start over again. So probably has to do with the market as well. Yeah. You know, they've sold out tickets seventy two they've never, you know, they've never had a sell tickets. So some teams have to appease their fans by change coaches. The Steelers have never seen it that way. And you know, it really isn't advantage to them. There scouts know what the coaches want. They go out. They look at the players. You know, they've run the three four defense since nineteen eighty two now in different forms, it's evolved. But Nevertheless, I mean, these their scouts or coaches. They don't know what they're looking for you know, and how have the James Connor jersey sales got in Pittsburgh this year. And you expect them to go up over the next couple of weeks. Now that is officially no more. You know, Jody I haven't tracked that, but I can tell you James berry popular here for any number of reasons brings popular before the Steelers drafted him. He's he's from western Pennsylvania. He was a star pit the overcame cancer the same kind let Mario Lemieux overcame. And then the Steelers drafted and now. One story after the outer labia on bell holds out and Connors of star. You know, I mean, it's just this this and this kid is a humble kid. Be scores. A touchdown. He turns around he shakes hands with the offense wine. I mean, that's what he does. And that's that's that is so Pittsburgh. They just love the kids. One last question here. Manning and Ben Rothlisberger their careers of always kind of intertwined, obviously. Because of the draft. Allies a player with diminishing skills who may may not be winding up his career with the giants over the next two months where it appears to me that big band is playing if not better than ever, then at least sort of at the same level, and he's been so much more physically abused that he has over the course of his career. What's your evaluation where he's at right now? He's at the top of his game. Gary, you know, he's a bigger guy than Eli. You can take that stuff. You know, he he had been hit a lot. In fact, the Steelers that's why they let. Walk. They wanted to protect them more often. And they didn't think Bruce was doing that. And he's been sacked a lot less now Ben has some advantages the DUI doesn't right now or the last couple of years. He's going to great on question line. Great running backs whether it's bell or Connor and great wide receivers. I mean, we're talking all pros everywhere. They're five starting line and three were in the Pro Bowl last year. So he's he's got a lot of support here. And he just keeps going. I mean, he's at the top of his game right now. He really is Willie do the potential retirement dance. Again this off season. He did that he did that after Jody after twenty sixteen lost in the winglets in the AFC title game. And my understanding was Todd Haley kinda ripped him on that Monday. He went on a radio Tuesday. And that's what he started talking about a lot of frustration. I think it's the only time he's ever met. You really shouldn't be mentioning it at all this off season. I think we can all agree on that. Great. Appreciate you coming on board. Go back and put some more stand between us does. Okay. Take care. Ed bouchette of the Pittsburgh post gazette here with us on a fan. Gary myers. Jody McDonald coming back. We've got a land segment to go best. Call gets on if we can take to we'll take to make it. Good. Get out our lines eight seven seven three three seven six six six six. Yeah. We sorta stopped paying attention and racked up a lot of. Yeah. It was stressful. He blamed me for my credit card debt, and I blamed him for building that man cave. It's awesome. Anyway, we stop blaming each other dinner homework.

There is more where that came from click back for new episodes all week, log broadcasting from the Mercedes men k which I could have a father son weekend, my dad's dead. This is Dan Patrick. My dad's dead. Welcome to the program. It's hour to Dan and the danettes Dan Patrick show this Wednesday. I'm not calling it a debut. I'm calling it an experience that is what we saw last night with Duke. I was just texting Doug Gottlieb. When do we turn on Duke because here's America excited to watch Duke? When's the last time that happened, but America's gonna go we're tired to do this isn't fun anymore? Dan dockage was there last night? Former college coach is his own radio show in Indianapolis. And also, he's a basketball analyst for the mothership. He'll join us coming up. Gary Myers longtime NFL writer wrote the book on the Cowboys. How about them Cowboys? He'll join us coming up. We'll talk to him not only about the history of the Cowboys. But also what's going on? Now. Here's Troy Aikman yesterday on the ticket in Dallas summing up his feelings and not masking anything. This team over a long period of time has been what it's been. And it hasn't always mattered who the head coaches bat. And so to me dragging me I'd say there has to be a complete overhaul of the entire organization. You just can't simply replace head coaches and say now it's going to be better. No, it it. It's it's been shown that it's not better. I don't know if you can do a complete overhaul here because the overhaul would have to do with the front office as well. And Jerry Jones Susan going allow that to happen. Plus an attractive job. Tim cowlishaw who covers the team for the Dallas Morning News. And I asked him what's more tractive job at Dallas opened up or the Cleveland Browns. And he said Cleveland, and that's only because you got a GM who's proven in John Dorsey because if you didn't have a proven GM in Cleveland, I wouldn't want either one of these jobs because I don't trust ownership the front office. But with John Dorsey there in Cleveland, Cleveland is probably a more attractive job. And then Jerry says, you know, we're gonna sign back Prescott to an extension. And then Tim cowlishaw said, you know, depending on how much you're spending I go. No the point is whether he's your quarterback or not it doesn't matter the price. And that's where I think, Jerry. There's no reason for Jerry to say we're extending back Prescott. You don't have to. But he did it Jerry loves to talk. And sometimes he thinks he can talk himself. Out is something where he just adds more kin linked to the fire there. We'll check in with the Lakers coming up a little bit later on your phone calls are welcome eight seven seven three DP show, Email address DP, Dan, Patrick dot com..

"We have faith major beef over this Levy, bell stuff. Because I'm I'm I'm palled. You do not give the credit to Connor to their bet. Because by the way, no one's checking the numbers. He's doing better in his rookie season the Bill ever did. So you either got to give the credit to Carter or you gotta give the credit to the office of life because it'll be on bills in my opinion. Nothing about a cry baby in a contract star. I did take your motions out of the mix as it pertains to your parent annoyance with Levy on bell. And answer's simple. Question is James Caan better than Levy. I'm bill. Call right now court numbers year in under the don't play with me. I'll give you downtown. I don't play that. I asked you a damn question. You know, good. And Dan while I didn't ask you to give me numbers. I understand enough as we all know the numbers, I have them right in front of me. I'm asking you is Levy on bell is James Caan a better player than Levy on bell. Yes. An okay then. So now that we know that let's get that out the way, and let's get to the heart of your real problem. It's that levian bell. Is coming back. A you're annoyed because you're saying that James Caan is not getting love James Collins getting a lot of love. Everybody recognizes the store we know what battles he's overcome as pertains to canton beyond. We we've spoken about his humility. And more importantly, we spoken about his numbers, which are better now than what Levy on bell gave you last year at this juncture, we get that. But you still as a football fan willing to acknowledge that he is not Levy on bell. So a real problem with Levy on bell is that you. Got cats out there that up ticked off that he's held out and tried to hold the Steelers hostage and try to show them that they couldn't win without him. And now that they found a we away to win without him. Anyway, you like tell him to go kick rocks. I understand that thinking, but keep in mind he had four hundred and six touches lash it through engine twenty one carries eighty five receptions, they were running him into the ground. He knew he was acceptable to get hurt. And that he would miss out on his long term money. And so that was his position I understand the Steelers feeling abandoned, I get that. But in the same breath, I feel that way because my Thomas say, we won't volunteers not hostages because at this juncture, he's absolutely right to take that attitude. I thought it was wrong for the Steelers offensive line and take that attitude week one. An I specially think it's wrong since they know the coach of the NBA of the NFL and the player's religiously complained about how to teams have all the advantages monetarily and not the players how come you can't see that Michael because. Oh, two parts one. I recognize your voice in the power that you have. And what you spread to the people that listen to your show. You are you have you have a mind that sees deeper than what other analysts in my opinion. But where I wore my heart hurt is where you don't hold people like levian Bill cable and all other contract breakers where I wanna go where are the men of their word. They come right jail. Stop right there. Stop right there. Michael stop right there. Because the reason why disagree with you. Profoundly is I religiously religiously come to the defense of the players, especially with the NFL if this were major league baseball play on NBA player, I would feel differently Michael. But in the NFL, I am appalled at the fact that teams have the right to come at you to restructure your deals for you to take pay cuts. Restructure, your salaries or flat out cut you after you sign a contract. But when you come saying that you've outplayed you're contracting, you deserve more money. All of a sudden, we got. Folks like you talking about players and their words what about teams what about that word? The money. The the response. I have that. He may Smith is. I I'm I'm a lower middle-class guy a lot of money..

"Real quick gum. You and Gary really, you know, send up a lotta my points on the Cowboys. But there's one thing that I feel like everyone's leaving out. Okay. That's the Jerry Jones is the issue during my entire lifetime. He has been the issue is micromanaging is the issue not pulling the trigger when it needs to be pulled the issue hell of a businessman don't get me wrong. But when it comes to football needs to take a year off and goes. All right, this style right deal. Do you want me to give you the airwaves? Just so you can want him on. Because if you do if you do I'll setup but outside of that, there's nothing I could tell you the reason why I us because he's the owner. It's not like it's the coach or whatever you could say he's not going anywhere. He's the owner. He cuts the checks. We ought. That's like me coming on air complained about James Dolan. What purpose does that serve? I heard why why even have the conversation about why the Cowboys are failing? When the answer is obvious because because it goes a step further lists, regardless of what you say about Jerry Jones, j think Garin and Scotland a hands peformance is not as for their presence is his fault. But their performance is not there is no students for them to know, we lane. Go a Dez Bryant. He's a problem with the wide receivers. Coach is he's a problem with certain teammates. He's a problem with Dak Prescott. We don't want them here. We don't need them here. We tolerated stuff off the air behind the scenes, etc. The tallow even know about we've had enough. All right is one thing to do that. But how do you have a plan? How do you come into the season knowing that is e keel Elliott has served this suspension knowing he's going to be available from opening tap knowing that that Prescott is Dan knowing that at least two fifty offense of line will be intact knowing the receiving course that you had knowing that Jason win. Was the tyrant and you'd be so pedestrian so conservative so predictable. What excuses I can't blame? Jerry Jones for that. Jason Garrett sin beat head coach Scotland and shouldn't be the office coordinator. And by the way, look into job that's happened in Carolina with Cam Newton who happens to be his office coordinator, north Turner. A God is renowned as a great offense of my not a great head coach, which the Los Angeles Rams, formerly the San Diego, Los Angeles charges formerly the San Diego Chargers because speak to but it's an exceptional offensive coordinator. Here's in Dallas for three years. How come you didn't bring him? Valid point. I could make is as far as America's team isn't winning. What America does why why the New England Patriots even in that conversation. Look what they've done for the last eighteen years. Yeah. No question about it. You know, that's the bottom line. So this is what it is. I appreciate the call. Thank you so much. Let's go to Michael you lava, Stephen they what's up. Oh my goodness. I must EBay Schnitt show best show on on on radio. Man. Thank you for your call. Thank you. But we got we got beef, bro..

"At at eight say ESPN, it's inundate seven to not to be seven seven six. Let's go back to phones. Let's go to shod you lava Stephen they talk to me. Hey, Steven basic, taking my call. Thank you just wonder if even a when will magic be accountable for that for the most may not drafting Jason Tatum now putting a package together strong enough to get quiet landed when right there, stop, stop, stop, stop stop first of all. I believe he should have drafted Jason Tatum. But the Lonzo ball move was clearly very very evident. It was a business of chino hills. Local product start at UCLA the buses don't make the money as the Balmain all of those folks make the billionaires you had to make a business move because genie bus and the bus family needed a business move made in that position. That's the only reason why Lonzo ball with drafted ahead of Jason Tatum. That's number one number two putting the package together for a while in it that was very calculating on. Magic Johnson's part. Very very simple, call collide. Leonard has made it very very clear or had made it very very clear he had no intention of staying in San Antonio. He wanted out and be he wanted to go to LA so San Antonio was on the phone trying to get the Lakers to mortgage the house and magic was like why do I need to do that one? All I have to do is wait a year for him till? Acquire him as a free agent way. I don't have to give up the assets because he's made it very clear he wants to come here. So that was the call that he made now could it end up backfiring show up because Linda can suddenly decide I want to stay in Toronto all unwilling to come to the clippers. Instead of the pop rachi kind of atmosphere is the Los Angeles Lakers. But the lake is of the belief. That's not gonna happen that this is where he will want to be in their mentality is whether it's by a whether it's Durant or whether it's a trade involving Anthony Davis. They're going to get one of those three guys for next season. So why give up those assets now for Kawhi Leonard to the San Antonio Spurs who are in the same Western Conference as the Lakers that was their thinking. We'll see if they're right..

"You heard the news about Dez working out with it would with scheduled to work out with the New Orleans Saints. How how good of a fit? Do you think that would be for him and for the saints? I think that he'll have fresh lakes if they signed him for the second half of the season. Whereas she's not the same player. He was four years ago with a cowboy sign of that big contract playing with drew Brees is kind of like playing with Tom Brady that they can make anybody look, really good. And they take advantage of this strength. I think they they can really use somebody opposite. Michael Thomas is developed into one of the two or three receivers. No, the and I think is a short-term marriage. I think that would be great and he's walking into a situation where he's going to be motivated because the typhoon best record in the NFC. I think that'd be a really good sunny before I let you get on outta here of all the stories that you told in this book how about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team. What's your favorite story of all the stories that you wrote about in this book? Well, I think it's the warning that. Stephen Jones told me about the draft room in the Johnny Manziel draft where everybody in the room. I don't know if we're told us won't be forced to everybody. The move at Gerry wanted Zack morning they had three defensive players in the board that they would have taken any three Anthony blower Aaron Donald or Ryan shakes ear Shays year went right to the Steelers went to Steelers right before the Cowboys picked. So now, the sitting Zach Morton who say fourteen people in the room wanted and and Johnny Manziel who only cherry wanted, right? There wasn't anybody else who even was thinking about man's L. And he's in Jerry's pretty much going around the room asking everybody, man. So great fit here, wouldn't he we gotta take manage out. No, Jerry, just doesn't fit. We don't want. And and you went around the entire room. And finally, the, you know, the the Cowboys scouts calls into the drift headquarters and and um. And takes Menzel. I mean, I'm sorry takes Martin. Right. And and Jerry's got this look on his face like a kid who just had his Halloween, candy, stolen any. He slaps Steven Jones on the leg. And he says, let me tell you something son. You know, you never get anywhere in life. If you play things down the middle, and you just played it down the middle and Steven was was really hurt by that because he idolizes his father. And he thought he was doing what was right for the team. But I think what that story also tells you a little bit is that although Jerry is in charge and has final saying everything that he's not that much of a dictator that if everybody else in the room is out voting him that he's gonna make some go with what he wants. And so it's gonna be really interesting to me to see what happens at the end of the season. If Stephen and others are telling them that they gotta fire Jason Garrett. They gotta move on from JC guy. And Gerry whose very Jason doesn't want to do it a morning, he'll do the right thing or that help claim I owned. It's my decision to your knowledge did Jerry Jones ever, go back to Stephen and apologize for that for for saying that Tim in light of the fact that how Johnny Manziel's career has turned out compared to bond in the NFL. That's a great question and one I definitely did ask and he did not. He did not apologize. But as knowledge meant that the Cowboys make the right decision when the when the Browns wet Nancy ho co signing signing Johnny never came up. Jerry, never went to Stephen and say, hey, we got a second chance at this. We can we have this case, you know, he can be really special for us. He never did that. So that was knowledge and right there that that Stephen was right? Then I think they're so aside of Jerry that people are not aware of. But you know, overall, like we said earlier, I think the biggest mistake is because failure is that he hasn't brought in football and hand because he thinks he's the football, man. Got you Gary Mayes. Appreciate it, man. Thank you so much author for the new book how about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team. Gary MAs contributed to.
Why Dez Bryant and the Saints are a good fit
"Heard the news about Dez working out with it would with scheduled to work out with the New Orleans Saints. "When I was I was thinking about levian bell. And supposedly he's on a virgin coming back. We don't know. But we surmise that that's going to be the case of all the things that I've seen transparent and Pittsburgh this year, the dismissive tone of the offensive lineman of Big, Ben, Rothlisberger, etc. Etc. What really resonated with me? Was what Tomlin said the other day? We want volunteer's not hostages and him saying that statement, I don't know if there's anything, and I'm not saying this was my Thomas intent by any stretch of imagination. He was just speaking as a coach that has to focus on the team in Gaza that in front of him ready to play. He can't worry about a guy. That's not the I get that. But to me, if you are an opposing executive in the National Football League in you heard that quote from Mike Tomlin, it raises an eyebrow in your mind. And makes you question whether you'd want Levy on bell, and you lock them certainly whether or not this team the Steelers want Levy on bell back you covered the NFL for decades. What do you make it at? Why I think the fact that James Connors rip it up right now. There's some time on a little more ah leverage. In words. You know, if they were struggling run the ball if they hadn't beaten Baltimore the other day, it might be more of a desperate situation. Would I don't really understand about what bells done here is? He was gonna make fifteen million and a half million dollars this year, you know, more than any running back in history and assuming he didn't get hurt. And it's always the risk you take. And that he was I thought he was really can't in as a free agent next year. I understand that he didn't want risk what he considered to be, you know, future millions by coming back and playing and potentially getting hurt. But that's that's just the way the system is set up. It's very hard to beat the system. And that's what he's attempting to do. Now people are saying well was that the Steelers offense of line? What was leading on bell product of the Steelers offensive line or? Or was it really levian bell. Who's so talented, and when you see a kid by James Connor come in with basically Bill experience, and he's willing this way too. You know well over a thousand yards season. I think it'd be Bill somewhat. I'm not sure he's ever getting make up the money. He's losing. It's just it's a shame to the players that there's not more freedom involved here. But it, you know, this was the Goshi at settlement. He had to get in. And you had to play out his his franchise tick, you didn't to do it. And he's he's still in a million line here. They get that. Then Levy on bell havoc case for himself from the standpoint that he had four hundred and six touches last year. He was the second leading receiver on a Pittsburgh Steelers. And that's why he deserved to be paid more than a typical running back as faith because of the versatility that he brought to the table. Did you think he had a legitimate beef in that regard? You know, I did I always take players. And and then you saw it will the situation when owed oh Beckham we hit coming off a broken ankle. And certainly the giants were not happy with a lot of his inhaler, and they're still not. But they warned him. It's unfortunate to build that. He plays the position that teams do not wanna really county a lot of money and he plays the position that's not really valued around the league. And I it almost like a perfect storm that was working against them here. And you know, maybe another team would have rewarded him? Maybe another team wouldn't have taken the same stance at the Steelers have where clearly for three years it's been pretty evident. They had no intention of signing him to award term deal. And they would just go play out the franchise tag as long as they couldn't use them up as much as they could. You know, it's it's funny. I'll give you a story. That this isn't even in the book, but Jimmy Johnson like you miss is thirty year was running Emmett into the ground like no five or thirty times came emceeing in his office. And I say Jimmy, a Cumulus kid. He's twenty four years old. What are you doing?.

"Now, you see your questions is what hurt the Cowboys in terms of the addiction to be Cowboys. It gives Jerry the impression. He's not doing anything wrong. Well, I mean, this is the thing with Dez Bryant a lot. I mean, if you watch just Brian last year the last two years it wasn't getting any separation anymore. He was dropping passes hid, no chemistry. With act like he did with Rome. All right any time. Something went wrong. He blow up on the sidelines and the Cowboys wanted him out of there so bad that never even can close to even offering him. You know, a new contract to reduce just as money. So that wasn't even an issue. Listen, Michael, Michael Irvin. Who I know really? Well, I was the other day. He was drafted. I was still working in Dallas point. I like Michael very much even he this point. I think would would say that if you're trying to assign blame back in, you know, the turning point of the franchise Stephen was when Jerry Jimmy could get along. I mean that team could've gone on and one, you know, four or five in a row, and the fact that Jerry couldn't put his ego aside Jimmy get some of the credit and that Jimmy wouldn't let Jerry play with his team a little bit. When I talk to Michael about that my book, he he says he wishes that Jimmy could have been more like Bella check in just letting you listen to Robert Kraft into the inner circle little bit. You know, makes you feel part of it. Jimmy, just wouldn't do that with Jerry. And I think. As he here's a gun on that that now that Jerry is more the guy, that's control. He just doesn't want to give that up. But you like you said his players extremely I mean, they swear by him. Yeah. Michael swears by Jerry and the results speak for themselves. One of my boys. A text me this morning. I hadn't seen it until like an hour ago. He actually said to me that Jerry Jones should go out and offer Bill Belichick one hundred and twenty million dollars to leave the patriots and come take over the Cowboys. Okay. Because when you look at Jon Gruden I'm adding this when you look at Jon Gruden sound four hundred million dollars when you look at Matt Patricia money, he's getting when you look at the Marvin Lewis of the world making around the same amount of dollars as a Bill Belichick and appears to be a joke. It should Jerry Jones do something like that. And what are the chances are that you think he would do something like that? Gary Myers there. Yeah. I can. Yes. Yes. What what are the chances? You think that? I don't I don't think I think bill's in his last head coaching job. I I don't think he's ever leaving the patriots. I had written a story back in January. It went and all those all that stuff had come out that there was friction in New England that I know this for sure you get told a friend of his that the only place he would go be a head coach with your the giants because that's where he really got made his name, and he still very fun to the organization, and then he wasn't going anywhere else. I happen to believe he wouldn't go anywhere else period. The question is with Bela tick is how will he will? He try to prove they can win a New England without Brady, but I'm not so sure that Brady's not get out west. Bella check the women. Thomas talking out. I said it again this week about playing another four years, you know, then then you say, okay, should go and try to buy Nick saving out of Alabama. Was fourteen and eighteen in two years offense, and he didn't distinguish himself at all as co head coach. I think what you need to do what you need to find the next Sean McVeigh, you need to find the next cost hand. And and get lucky that way instead of looking to just so money at all the problems guy Mayes right here author for the new book. How.

"Well, I think it has to be like a two prompt dancer in that, you know, who I want as a general manager, and then who at one as my coach, and you know, certainly, there are a lot of really quick general managers in the NFL. The problem is being you always want to go where the successes being and that's the one, but it's been proven that you know, out checks pulses, general managers and his coaching tree. They're just is not really succeeded, you know, outside of outside of New England. So, you know amount. Really sure whom I would hire a gentleman you really have to think about that. Would certainly there's a holistic coaches. I think would be an upgraded this point Jason Garrett. I mean, it's just the same thing every year which guys to go after I think, and I'm not sure he's gettable. But perhaps if Michigan wins the national championships this year. Are you know, wait a minute. What what blasphemy is coming out of your mouth? There's nobody what he's going to beat Alabama. I mean, nobody use it. If he wants a nasty him. You know, doesn't have a snowball chance at Halloween and the national championship bitchy would Alabama plan college football. You know that right? Well, I mean, no, I don't know that. Let me go ahead. I know it's different level. Right. Do you think the seven giants had any chance of beating the undefeated patriots in the Super Bowl? You know? I believe it or not I thought they had a slight chance. And you know, what that's like chance was could you get to Tom Brady? That was the only shot that was the only show that gave the Johnson and the ball actually pick the giants win that game by the way, I might have been playing for the hometown audience. That's right. That's right. God like a horrible even John Harbaugh who I think might be reaching the end of his run in Baltimore. I I think he's a really good head coach. And they just haven't been anybody. You know, get the offense straightened out there. I think somebody like that really respected guy who's players with respect right off the bat would be you know, goes you know, what I would want to do. I'd wanna find next Bill point or the next Ron woolfe for the next George Young and put him in charge of of the Cowboys football operations. And then you let him. Him pick a coach and l- and let them develop the team together. It it's not an easy thing to do. But Jerry, hasn't even tried. And I think that's got to be the most disappointing thing to cowboy fans is that he he not afraid to spend money we've seen that. It's just for some reason he just says not he refuses to admit that he's not capable of running the football side. He's he's in the hall of fame because of what he's done financially and how we change economics to the NFL. He's not in the hall of fame for being in general manager. And I think somebody needs to tell him that Gary Mayes, right? He was Stephen A ESPN radio. ESPN news off of the new book. How about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team before I move onto some other NFL stuff because you know, all things NFL, and I gotta ask you an abundance of questions around the league. Gary let me stick to the Cowboys in just disregard. We're here in a desk. Bryant is going to be working out for the saints. But it was like pulling teeth almost to get into this point. Because clearly he never wanted to leave Dallas you look at Michael Irvin. And he comes on. I take yesterday sweating bullets bloviating and talk and all of that smack about the history of the Dallas Cowboys getting on my last damn nerves. I love my brother. But damn I didn't wanna hit that. We we see Cowboys who just loved a cowboy they can't get enough of being Cowboys. I'm wondering does anyone recognize how much does hurt the cowboy brand because it gives Jerry Jones a license to keep things status quo? And I think it may be serving the inhibit progress and ultimately success for the Dallas Cowboys to that you say what?.

"I'm talking about the one and only Gary Myers. He is on the line to be right now. What's up, Gary? How are you, sir? To really enjoy that game last night. I loved it. I had a ball. I had a ball. Watching those disgusting nauseating fans known as Dallas Cowboys the fan base that I hate most throughout American history. I went to in Texas yesterday to do I take right around the corner from Cowboys stadium and told those fans to their face. They would lose the Tennessee titans last night. And sure enough. That's what happened. Now, you decided to write this book on these Cowboys. I will ask you a simple question. What was it like watching the Cowboys yet again flunk the way they did last night for you, Gary why seen it now for twenty some odd years twenty three twenty three to be exact twenty three's? Okay. Okay. It's been a recurring moody where we know the ending. They should've been up seventeen nothing in the first quarter appeal goal. And then after they get the first turn over score and get another turn over and they're right inside the five yard line and actually own the ball up where they have all those people dancing on the second deck of the stadium except he throws into double coverage in the end zone, and to me that right there that could have a fourteen point could have really. I thought the titans would have quit. But I think it could pick in the energy out of them. And the fact that the Cavaliers couldn't cash as you saw the whole intimacy game. Changed for that. And you know, now if the question in Dallas is the question that we've been asking for the last two years is why Jerry Jones finally make a change with Jason Garrett or the fact that case in let's Jerry, Jerry and doesn't complain about. It will that get him another year. Here's my thing. I mean as you watch all of this stuff on fold. I mean, you're chronicling things about about cowboy nation, or what have you you know, what I was thinking about when I was on. When when I thought about your book, Gary, you know, what I'm saying? I'm saying to myself, you know, something they'll never improve because of stuff like this. Gary Myers writes this book how about them Cowboys. All right of is America's team, we all know that what five billion a year, then the most popular franchise. What's the incentive for them to win? When they have everything else that winning usually reaps. They actually don't have to win in order to be successful. In other areas, particularly monetarily because they are the Cowboys brand, Gary. Yeah. Hit on the head there. And you don't mind this premise book is how is the team that has nothing to the Super Bowl. And you're like twenty three years. How is their value climb to where there now with five during dollars, which is considerable considerably more than any of the franchise in the world, and how is it popularity as high right now as it's ever been. And so the big question that people have asked to be is what is your priority is making money or is it a winning now? I don't think it's mutually exclusive. I think he's extremely competitive and wants to win very badly. But his just for a lot of years now gone about it the wrong way, he should not be the general manager of this team is pretty clear that if the gentlemen last twenty three years with somebody other than Jerry Jones. The fire them about five times. Right. But it's been it's been his biggest blindspot is not taking a step away from your football part of it and really being determined to prove to everybody that it can compete with the best general managers, and he just can't do it. So if you if you had your druthers, if you if Jerry Jones sat down and say Gary Myers, I'm gonna do what you suggest tell me exactly what I should do who. Should I bring on board? Who should I have here with me that would compel me to step back and just enjoy my franchises an owner leaving the football decisions to football gods. Who would that guy? What would you say, Gary mice?.

"Here on the fan since last Saturday when I was with Gary Myers, and I will be a more times over the next coming Saturdays. But I am not today. Mr. Myers as we told you last week is on a book tour the book that he just penned about the Dallas Cowboys from whence Gary came a former write it down there. Before coming to New York for decades decided to reach back into routes a little bit and write a book on the Cowboys. So it's on all your better bookshelves, Amazon and everything else. If you're a cowboy fan giant fan is probably pretty good read, you can read it and laugh at it. Because the giants have won more Super Bowls and the Cowboys AB Gary is down in the Lone Star state signing books for the cowboy fans down there. I he'll be back with me here next Saturday. So I'm looking forward to that. But more than that. I'm looking forward to talking to you for the next four hours at eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six. Coming up on this football season. After last football season ended conversation began about the giants and what to do with Odell Beckham his contract. How should they handle? Sure day. Sign him. Should they make him go year to year? Should they used a franchise tag? Should they attempt to try and trade him? I was okay with one of two possibilities. If three are signed him hold onto him. But go down the franchise tag road or trade him. I was okay. With two out of the three. Signing him or trading him. I thought going down the franchise tag road would not work well with the personality bike Odell Beckham junior. And the giants chose not to of course, they got the contract down. And it got him signed. I because he is now signed which makes him probably more difficult to trade and certainly part of their roster this year, which we know is right now one in five and going nowhere fast. I think had they gone down that road. It could be even worse at this point. So in that way, I will defend the signing of Odell Beckham junior. I would every passing it seems like day now not week not month day. Odell Beckham does were says something or family members do or say something that just makes it harder to pull for the young man to be a proud giant fan. To be able to work your way to a one and five start. It's just not easy with Odell Beckham junior opening mountain inserting, and or having his father do it for him on an almost day in day out basis. He doesn't really like water really is that what we're gonna talk about the fact that he doesn't appreciate hydrating that he does respect John Mara. The owner of the jets the giants excuse me. But wouldn't retract any of the foolish things that he said when asked about defines these gotten for saying counterproductive things about the team? It is what it is really. He is just such a tough guy to root for he is a very very very very very talented player. And that's why I was hoping the giants could either sign and we're trade him because he's certainly represents value in the National Football League. Because he's got a lot of skill. And I know some of his detractors liked to say what has he ever won? That's true is never been on a team that has won a playoff game. And I've been on some not good at all giant football team software, including the one that is playing this year. Most of the time that's not having to do del back junior. He's also been hurt. And when he is out of the lineup. The giants are lesser team because he is just to quality quality of player to be able to say the two teams going to be as good without him as they are with them just Anapa in that way. But he is a diva extraordinaire just something about a couple of positions in the National Football League that lend themselves to divas wide receivers and the guys who cover them. The Cornerbacks seem to lead the league at diva like babe, you're and this guy is making an argument for being the biggest Steve of the mall, and that's something. The New York Giants do not need with the issues that they have the lack of talented. They have the scrutiny that they're coming under for making a decision last year and not moving past their quarterback of the present. And onto one would potentially give them a future, which by the way, you know, I was on record with that. I agreed with the giants decision to take Barkley and last year's draft. I thought. Had a couple of bullets left in a chamber with every passing week. It looks like those bullets are less and less and less effective. It doesn't mean he can't still work out for the giants because they are going to have a high pick. Now, there are some giant defenders who have gone down the road of. Well, they knew they weren't going to be very good anyway. So they knew that they could get their quarterback initiate, drip. No, they didn't. That was not the game plan. The giants were planning on being competitive this year and waiting more games and losing and being in the wildcard mix. And I thought Barclay without lift them to that with Eli manning running the team, and I don't look anything like that. They are probably going to end up with a high pick, which may give them the possibility of finding their quarterback got a future. Yes. Mr. Herbert from Oregon you should keep an eye on his games going forward. Because I think he is the top quarterback will be eligible for the draft this year, and is probably going to get a. Pretty good. Hi draft position. But I think the giants going to be in position to take them because the other teams like the cardinals who are as bad if not worse than giants aren't despite the fact that Josh Rosen looked way way way way way in over his head on Thursday night football the other day, they're not gonna take quarterback. So if the giants are in the top three or four four or five they're probably going to get to pick the first quarterback to come off the board. And it could very well. Be Justin Herbert. Is he going to be able to work better with Odell Beckham junior? Does Odell Beckham junior had the possibility of staying here. Is that a good idea? I'm sure the giants will listen to offers for him. We've got a trade deadline coming up. I don't think they could possibly move them between now and the trade deadline so it'll come down to the off season stuff. But what is it about wide receivers? Why are they all wack? Why why can't they behave like normal? I understand their talented their egos involved. They wouldn't be as good players if they didn't have the eagles attached. But you've also got to be able to control your ego to a to an extent, and I don't know for t go with this guy. He's just flat out crazy and his father gets involved jumping in on social media and Rolin old video of Mr. misdemeanor getting upset at a giant game and just exacerbating. The problem. Not what you need if you're a giant fan. So yes, we'll talk a little bit about the giants. Roll game this week. They're going to be an underdog. The falcons have not been very good. I thought the falcon to a playoff team. Their defence is a bad and be hurt. Maybe I should put it be a hurt and therefore be bad because their defense has been one of the worst in the National Football League through the first six weeks a lot of it has to do not all of it. But a lot of us do with the injuries. And it's still not out the giants you'd be able to score points, but Jerry and start scoring points these days, but the falcon offense has been pretty good. So the giant defense is going to be tested on Monday night, long time to wait. A lot of stuff to get through between giant games because they play a Thursday. And then they come back, and you got to wait, and wait, wait and wait. And before you get on Sunday downplay either you gotta wait till Monday night. Football giant fans will give you the chance to chime in jets have injury issues themselves. No may know, a known one no screen doubtful for. Prior and Tremaine Johnson. Not a good team to be facing off against the Vikings are pretty damn talented this week for the jets undermanned, and they are a little undermanned off last week's Goodwin. You'd like to see him take to win a row at home again. But they are a deserved underdog against the Vikings who've been pretty good themselves over the last couple of weeks. Roger Goodell says it's no better time to be a fan of the National Football League. Is that spin? Or is that truth? I can explain to you. How it spin? It's it's not a complete falsehood. There are ways you could make the argument for that. But there it's not like the National Football League is all smiles and rainbows. They have their issues to those interesting that the Commissioner decided to come out and take such a stance this week. So we'll get plenty of football stuff in baseball game. Seven tonight love game saban's bueller against such. Yes. I will tell you. I am rooting for the British to reason. Number one. I picked them before the series started. I'd the brewers and yes are Yankee fans the Red Sox in the World Series this year, and we've already got the Red Sox home. So we could go to for two of the Bruce find a way to win tonight. And they haven't been to the World Series since nineteen eighty two ED's. Ben along time. How bad it for the dodgers? I haven't been to the World Series in eleven months. I know it's been awhile since they one one. But at least they're there. The boys haven't been there forever. So yes, I'm rooting for the brew tonight. Good pitching matchup bueller against Ashim. Although maybe I shouldn't say that. Because it's all about the bullpen. Now. These days I know that it's going to probably come down to that. Because it will be a close game. But I do like both starting pitchers. I don't think it's going to be high. Scoring game tonight. So I'm very much looking forward to a game seven the Red Sox Astros went through quickly. I thought that was going seven games and an ended up being a five game victory for the Red Sox Mets and their general manager. We'll talk a little bit about that Yankees. Manny Machado will mix that in and nice win by the nets last night. Topping the Knicks lavar with the game winner late at a halibut fourth quarter and overall game good game after Knicks won their opener drop went their crosstown rivals over in Brooklyn last night. So Mixim NBA. And while we're at it. Lots and tied to chat. Yup. We'll get the phones open immediate dementia. Eight seven seven three three seven six six six Saturday afternoon..

"He thought he was jed clampett. Right? Where people in Dallas did know is that they weren't getting jed clampett. They were getting JR Ewing that just a tremendous businessman might be pretty cut throat. A real jetted family man in terms of involving his kids, giving them tremendous responsibility. It is real. I've called this. It's a five billion dollar mom and pop operation. It really is. Takeaways, family out of the equation. People wonder what's the first priority making money or winning, and he'll tell you it's winning, but there's certainly a lot of evidence based on the results that it's making money. I think people who read this book will find Jerry to be entertaining to read the stories that he tells. To defer to his football. People even know he's quote unquote, the general manager. There's there's a great anecdote near about the two thousand fourteen draft with Johnny Menzel on the board and how Jerry went around the entire room Steve and was begging just one other person in that room to agree with them on my in Zell and he will news outvoted fifteen to one you said, okay, fine. You know, take take man's, take Zack Morton. I'm not happy about this and he leans over to Stephen who idolizes father and his father's mentor, and Jerry slap Stephen on the leg really hard. And he says, I want to tell you one thing, son, I didn't get to where I am in life by plane things down the middle. You have to take risks and you just play something down the middle, and that's the way you're gonna live your life. You'll never be a success. He said that the Steven Steven, wow, so that's Steve and had a Stephen take that he was extremely hurt by that. I mean, think about that if you wouldn't take Johnny Manziel of all. Things in life that father could be disappointed that you about an excoriate you about this to help you get better in the beat better. The one moment where he does this to his son is over Johnny Manziel. You have to remember, Johnny Manziel was from Texas. He was a huge college star, they they love Romo, but they knew the end was near Jos trying to formulate a succession plan and thought Johnny was the the answer despite all the red flags that everybody in the in the league knew and obviously surfaced. Let me ask you this question piggyback off what you just hope me since we've seen what has happened to Johnny Manziel. Has that conversation ever been revisited whether it'd be Stephen Jones or Jerry Jones to your knowledge? Oh, no. I think they've definitely talked about it when Cleveland let Menzel go. I mean the question then was okay with Jerry going to try to bring them in and rehabilitate them and Jerry's taking chances on players in the past as we know tank Johnson, pacman Jones, Greg, hardy? Yes. Even the stuff was Zeke Elliott leading into? Well, I'm not sure that surfaced before the draft that was after that was after they acquired, but sticking by Zeke. Yes. And going to the mat with Roger Goodell on that. So I mean, there was a serious not I wouldn't say concern, but curiosity, whether Jerry given a second chance now to get Menzel for nothing, whether he would step up and say, let's just bring him in. We got nothing to lose, and fortunately for the Cowboys that didn't happen because that would have been a train wreck. It would have been a tremendous distraction and completely unnecessary. Plus I think he's proven to at this point through what he didn't fell, that I don't think he can play at the NFL level. Have you ever asked Jerry Jones? Do you believe that the Cowboys are worthy of being recognized as America's team? I mean, I consider this'll be the greatest country in the world. I'm quite sure you think about the greatest country in the world be and you got a football team that's synonymous with their caught America's team, but they've produced. Thing, but mediocrity over the last twenty five years. Yeah. Well, he inherited that name and he inherited the brand and he built on it and he's not about to say, you know, we haven't been disable twenty years. Take it back. Let's let them borrow it in New England for a while. We can pray that we, we go over, pray, Gary, Gary, Myers. How about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team, Gary Myers, New York Times, bestselling author right here with Steven eight on ESPN radio and ESPN news..

"We all know that I'm famous or not infamous for saying how much I despise cowboy fans across the globe. I have been on the record stating that did the most disgusting nauseating fan base in American history. Why? Because they could go one in fifteen. The Caesar can end on a Sunday night at seven o'clock at about seven fifteen. You know, we're gonna win the Super Bowl next year, right? I did. They just make. They make me sick. I can't stand up, but I'm only playing around. But I mean, it's somewhat. Threes are not bring this up is because do you have any idea how special you have to be to write a book on them damn Cowboys. And the be in my studio. There's very, very few people I would allow this to happen with, but my next guest is one of them. He is an NFL columnist. He's been with the new York Daily News for many years. I am incredibly familiar with his work incredibly fond of his work. He's done television. Obviously, he's done a lot of things in the media industry. He's one of the exceptional reporters and writers on the NFL this nation has ever seen, and he's been doing a wonderful wonderful job covering the NFL for new York, Daily News for many years. His name is Mr. Gary Myers, the author, the author of the New York Times. First of all is a New York Times bestseller. But the author of my goodness, I can't believe the title. How about them Cowboys? I cannot believe it inside the huddle with the stars and legend. First of all, somebody is as a student as a -ccomplish as you are Gary Myers, why would you write a book about the Cowboys? Because a gazillion cowboy fans in this country and around. In the world. And as you know before we were teammates at the daily news, I.

"But I think it's really important important for Roger, not to play favorites, and he's probably alienated who's to closest allies in the last four or five years in Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones finishing up with Gary Myers, Gary. The last thing I would say about just the Cowboys kind of imprint on society. I guess I would ask you why after doing the research this book d, you believe that the Cowboys are such a gigantic part of Americana. It's a phenomenon and I really do believe they've completely surpassed the Yankees and Notre Dame, and even if the basketball team you want to mention, they just didn't unbelievable job in the late sixties when they lost this championship games too. The Packers of becoming a team that took to heart strings of football fans, because he always such an underdog, they were only you know, the only came into being in nineteen sixty and by the mid sixties. They were going against, you know, Lombardi Packers for championships and then being on on the late afternoon slot on thanksgiving every year, which Schramm volunteered forecast. Nobody ever wanted to play on thanksgiving. So for the lions and the Cowboys and getting that late afternoon slot more from not having a late afternoon doubleheader game on CBS or FOX or NBC being on Monday night football when it was a really, really big deal to be a Monday night football. More than anybody else. Now, you know with you there on Sunday night football more than any other team, they, they have just people. The love them is such a cliche, but it's really true people either love him or hate him, and nobody feels indifferent about him. And that was, that's what makes them really special. I'm doing a book signing in New York at a bar in Manhattan at bills itself is the official bar of the TAOs Cowboys. They have their watch parties there every Sunday. I had no idea Cowboys fan club in there in every city in the country. I know that with a moose calls at giant stadium in a big game of ninety three between the Cowboys and giants, and it was blown away by how many cowboy fans have gotten into into building. But to think does actually two bars. Manhattan I'm doing signings at that are calbos bars, and I'm doing this is really cool. I'm doing a signing at at star in October eighteenth and have Jason Witten, Daryl Johnston and Everson walls joining me. So that's going to be great. It's going to be a lot of funny. A lot of fun, Gary Myers author of how about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team. Thanks so much for joining Gary Peter. I've known you forever, and this is the first time you've ever asked me questions and it was a lot of fun. I think you have me on. Thanks to my guess Justin, Tucker, and Gary mind. "So is me of Eli manning now. So I always contained. They're getting fired was the best thing that happened to Landry post football years because instead of going out as a coach, who lot of people thought the game had passed him by he went out as mortar figure like poor time, you know, Joe, how dare Jerry Jones fire our Tom, when in reality they wanted him fired and Jerry did what they wanted. Gary Myers author of a new book on the Dallas Cowboys, which I really like, how about them Cowboys inside the huddle with the stars and legends of America's team, Gary, I think not many people know the next two things I'm gonna ask you about her things that I don't believe. Many people know. The first one is. When Jerry Jones bought this team in nineteen eighty nine, he was stretched so thin to buy this team to come up with the cash that there were times during the process where even he admitted to those closest to him. I don't think I have the money to do this. This is really going to be a stretch, how so a, how desperately did Jerry Jones wanna buy this team when it was really at its dear of of being any good, you know? And then do you think there is a chance that maybe he wasn't going to get approved while I think the only way he wouldn't have got approved if it didn't come out with his wonderful golden parachute fatigue Schramm because. Tex was very close with Roselle and all the owners and and Jerry was was running him off. So the point that a came for Jerry to get approved or not approved, I don't think it was an issue. The financial was an issue and besides the fact, and they changed roles after he had already fired Landry he got rid of shrimp and brand, and now they were going to say, no, we're not approving you. So they changed the rules. These guys will buying teams can no longer make these changes until they get approved, which makes a lot of sense, but the Cowboys losing a million dollars a month when Jerry took over right. And that was a terrible strain on him. And that's why he was concentrating almost entirely on the business side and lending Jimmy handle the football operation besides the fact that they took over team that had no talent, but did inherit the first pick in the draft and took Troy Aikman and had Herschel Walker. And we know that they made that great trade that set them up for the future. But financially the fans weren't coming out anymore. Team went one in fifteen thought to Jerry Jimmy. We're over their heads. I asked you like to story, I asked Jerry, what's the worst business deal he ever made? And he was, you know, Jerry talks and it's sometimes you know, you really got to cut through it, but he had bought an interest in a bunch of cellphone companies around eighty seven or eight. And he didn't pay tremendous amount of money for it a couple hundred thousand dollars. But when it came time to buy the team, he had a cell that interest because he needed the money to put towards the purchase of the team. We sold it for a million dollars and then the cell phone era exploded and eight years later, that portion that he Seoul was were seven hundred million dollars a home. I got. Was he sick about it? Well, he was except when I said, well, you pay one hundred and fifty four million for the Cowboys. So now worth five billion. And if you actually needed that million to buy them, then it was probably a good deal. He was just, you know, that just really shows that he really was scraping together every last bit as most people do when they're when they're buying their first house or something like that. This was a dream his, you know, he almost bought the chargers. Many years earlier in his father talked him out of it, and he told me a story about when his father Pat cold them after bought the team and basically says to son, I've been reading everything about you..

"Best year of his career in '98 when he threw twenty nine touchdown passes and he didn't even start and told about three or four games into the season and and the jets had that ten nothing lead on denver early in the third quarter on that in championship game but we thought there was a really good chance at that point they'll get to finish off the broncos in and make it to the super bowl but you know he played 16 seasons in the nfl which is you know amazing in itself and in thirteen of those seasons he'd block for a thousand yard russia uh inc including um when uh curtis martin interminable year this was like oh three or four something like that um became the oldest player in nfl history to lead the league in rushing so you know his accomplishments with terrific it's just hard you know when you're sitting there and at with their centering you don't have the stats that you have with a quarterback or receiver or you know even a corner back uh to point out and you're you're really relying a lot on on the accolades that you can cumulate you know other people talking about him and then just ecstatic i mentioned about two thousand eur russia's but um eight really does deserve it and it's the second year that will be discussing him in the room uh as a finalist and no for kevin sake i really hope he does get in this year how does it work gary 'cause it seems like it's very rare that two guys get in at the same position and so i referenced you know dawkins and lynch at at save your ty law and everson walls at coroner randy moss teo i know you guys don't compare got you know one guy to another but there's got to be something to it to the position part of it when it seems like there's never a year were two guys get it seemed like there's always kinda wanted each spot how does that always happy.
