3-year old Gary boy shot south of Chicago

"Year old boy was hospitalized earlier this morning after suffering three gunshot wounds in Gary, Indiana. The police say his mother was at work when it happened. The caretaker is being questioned. Sam Cook's tells w G and he lives nearby in the 1700 block of East Seventh Avenue, and that was all right. I don't really know the four story but the thought of a chapel in a trigger three time now there's been no update on the boy's medical condition.

The Ammons Haunting

"A swarm of black flies. Unidentified wet boot prints a twelve year old levitating above her bed a nine year old boy walking backwards up a wall. And that is just the beginning of the amazon's haunting in november. Two thousand eleven. The evans family moved into a rental house on three eight. Six carolina. street. In gary indiana in two thousand fourteen. The story of the two hundred demons house went public in a bit for a haunting. Yes and i wanted to do a haunting. But i didn't wanna do one from seventeen thirty two. That's my job. Yeah i'll i'll dredge up an old hundred year old woman fairness that's when a lot of those happened. That's where a lot of those were born but defined one and again. This is finding this but something that's relatively current even for us is a relatively current haunting. Episode of the year is ending a want to get some haunted. Got some haunted. And i was so happy that you went that route. I often find to finding something for the podcast. That's different to not your standard garden variety haunt to something that is strive to do and it can be hard. You know i think haunted episodes are probably the most few and far between. Because they're generally unsubstantiated yes as opposed to true crime or something strange historically exactly go into records and test monis with with go stuff it can be a little dicey so what happened between two thousand eleven and two thousand fourteen everything. Nothing did not happen. Everything had in. But what makes this case so public and we'll find troubling okay. Is that it heavily. Involved the department of child services. Or as i recall them child protective services based on my interactions with child protective services. I'm not apparent when i was interviewed by them as a child really. No yeah wait because your parents had an unsafe for what what happened to you. What happened you. There was there was a time and this is a kind of a brief time. Because i moved out relatively soon after but we have had rats living in the walls. It's everything about you. It's at the poverty. Chapter of my life wasn't extremely long but there was just the rest of the time just been coasting on ab just broke peanut. Skateboard sunglasses at forty eight. No rats when you involve the the safety and wellbeing of children it gets a little bit it gets dicey to say the very least and there were eight hundred pages of official records that were obtained by the indianapolis star. Well which indianapolis newspapers in sources are a little bit skewed. I'm finding lee. Really lean into foul. Was gary indiana and maybe this running area very religious. Almost bibles else as hsieh checks. No indiana riverboat in indiana one time and i might as well have been in the deep south. They take their religion very seriously. And yeah and the spirituality of it and the idea of ghosts and those things are not are not lost on them and that plays a lot into the story. So some of these. And i'm not trying to say they're good or bad and that since they really skew into. This seems very legitimate when not necessarily true. Yeah

C. have submitted plans to re open beaches with certain restrictions and time limits to supervisors say Orange County was targeted and the board shouldn't have to ask to open beaches the state's already approved several OC beaches to open with certain activity restrictions and time limits and a federal judge has ruled governor Newsom was within his rights to ban church gatherings in the interest of public health the ruling out of Sacramento yesterday says Newsome did not violate the constitutional rights to religion and free assembly at five thirty five it's our business buzz with CNBC's Jane wells we're gonna talk food food and more food James story this week for C. K. that is had to resign it's got a little bit of both interesting Jenna burly guys kind of learn if you will the resumption of modeling the ferry okay Christmas couldn't be the bottle the lockdown in the UK you were going to broke his own rules and what his what his water coming over to his place get into the details for you she's married and his shoes over there with him the daily telegraph's smells a darn good story they run with it bottom line is that this professor Neil burger send her through our results with his scientific advisory role with the government now because you can't be in a situation where you're designing the whales for sixty five million people and then not then decided not to follow them yourself good news said but it wasn't me she just insisted she'd she came over one of the twisters listening if you're tested positive for Colbert thank you earlier so he said well I got I got a meal ready for move so I can go up or do whatever I want you to know that hasn't been proven yet without a shadow of a doubt so what kind of out on a limb here by himself and I would think to they keep peace making accusations like that our claims like that I should say then this is going to win probably a lot of his research into question with people going Hey wait a minute you're making assumptions that you really have not had proven yet so how are you the right guy to put together these models what was interesting is a model and a bell projected something of a neighbor of two hundred fifty thousand Britons would be dying because of colder you know that you might be right somewhere down the road but as of right now I think we're done about roughly about thirty thousand people all right here so you know he's he's he's way way off almost by power plant and then almost adds insult to his scandalous injury because what he was predicting was making it look so incredibly dire yet he still was willing to make the rules yeah still no winner hello are you have to yeah you had to resign the health secretary will help bring us about this and today on the various shows over here the morning shows then you just kind of a loss for words look you are usually stronger shoulders Matt Hancock and he said oh no we had to go he's done the right thing you've left in a story what a course there are a lot of other sciences all my panel developing those strategies and putting forward their scientific you'd be well point of view on where the government should go for Johnson in the commissary hinting that there could be some relaxing of some very minor things probably as early as Monday wow okay well we'll be watching for that then that'll be kind of the next part of this story thank you so don't so much time I'm not sure if that was the lifetime movie plot or if yeah the news report I kind of like these let's keep these like I do I like these dramatic wins let's keep this going all right see you later Tom ABC's Tom rivers of you can't make those kinds of stories up and you know you know what that movie producers are already casting this I support you know what I'm gonna find a picture of this guy and I'll tweet it out and you guys can tell me who you think he said who should play him I'll be fine this morning I'm trying to picture it and I'll tweet it out in a second it's kind of a tall at night since a time no idea how tall he is he looks "The spectacle of like, Gary Indiana writing this letter to Amazon that's just this plaintive plea for an injection of help when Amazon was never going to locate Gary, Indiana, it's like a dominance play that bazo says Lord commander, and like he sits on the throne, and he watches all these sort of supplicants common. These supplicants are Megyn can cities represent millions of people who've been elected by their citizens to represent the public trust to come as if before the king or before the emperor like shower their gifts upon his feet and say pick me pick me, and then he'll Dane to pick one. And it's just offensive to every less democratic fiber of my being. Hello. And welcome to why is this happening with me your host Chris hates. Well, you probably know this, I guess, but I live in New York City, which is where we shove nine. I'm actually from New York City. I'm a city kid born risen Bronx. And I've always been a city denizen, which means in entire adult life. I lived in cities post college that Chicago, Washington DC and New York and one thing about say life, particularly in New York, and I'm saying this in a room with other New Yorkers. I think we'll agree with me. The bays. The basics of life are hard just doing basic stuff grocery shopping in New York is harder than it is another places and other places in America. You come out of the house, you get in your car, then you drive to the grocery store, which is maybe ten minutes away, and there's a big parking lot. And then you park, and then you fill your car up when you come home that's grocery shop in New York. It's not that easy. A lot of times. You don't have a car. If you do have a car, you might go to a place that does or does not have parking it might be really far away. Then you come back, and you have to look for parking you. May live in a four story walkup, and you've got groceries you gotta schlep up there. Now, you can maybe go to the local Bodega to get some extremely overpriced Tropicana and some tuna. But that is not that is not fully provisioning your house. And this challenge is a perennial challenge of of New York City life and big city life and for us in our life one way that we square the circle on. This is a little company will secret I'm gonna let you in on called Amazon. Amazon has created this like friction lists customer experience. That means that all of the ways that you get stuff into a house. Less. I would say groceries honestly be insecure for that. But that's another story. So Amazon has created this amazing experience to to acquire things and get them into your house. That is particularly if you live in New York really makes life easier. It's cheaper than the towel paper. Look at the data. It comes the next day. You don't have to mess with like taking stuff on a subway or lugging it up steps it gets delivered right to your door. And when I sit and take a look at my life. It's unnerving the degree to which Amazon is embedded at come downstairs in the morning. I tell Alexa, play WNYC, and I listened to that as I make my kids their breakfast. I use the paper towels to wipe up after my daughter that were ordered on Amazon prime and then on Friday movie night. Like, maybe they watch a movie on Amazon because Amazon does that to most of the websites that I'm visiting are hosted. Amazon these days, I don't know most, but a huge amount like the amount of things that Amazon is doing from producing original television to selling every frigging thing in the world to hosting a massive portion of the entire to the internet to contracting with governments including our own on stuff. Like facial recognition technology to sell the department defense is kind of shocking and also a little more than a little unnerving. And I think people have a strange feeling about Amazon because because the first person user experience can be so simple, and so seemless, and so smooth polling shows that people generally have a good feeling about the company, and I think that's partly a credit to the fact that they have put a lot of investment into customer service and their front end interaction, but that front and interaction is hiding a massively large and powerful company that is up to a lot of. Stuff that should really give you pause. So our guest today is an expert in this. She's an expert in big companies generally and specifically Amazon her name is Stacey Mitchell. She's co director of the institute for local self reliance short a nation article called Amazon doesn't just want to dominate the market. It wants to become the market, which is a really important point that she makes the course of our conversation, and Stacey has been working at this small kind of think tank now profit for years studying the effects of concentration among large corporate enterprises, and the effect that has on small businesses local hardware stores local pharmacies. You'll hear talk about that local bookstores, which is how she got into Amazon, and she makes an incredibly persuasive case that the policy environment under which we have created Amazon a is not some state of nature level playing field where they just sprang up because they have the best mousetrap. It's not they are beneficiaries of all kinds of policy advantages starting from the very beginning having to do a sales tax and all the way up through their big new HQ, which can be built here in New York with a ton of government subsidy and number two that the policy environment itself determines the kinds of corporate structures and business structures. We have and that the world can be different and American capitalism can look different than the one that we have created. So if you're a person who uses Amazon doesn't use Emma's on a person who participates in any way, shape or form as a modern American consumer, which is basically everyone if you buy stuff from big corporations or you buy stuff from mom and pop shops. If you buy stuff from mom and pop shops, you love or mom and pop shops used to love that went out of business. If you're thinking about what the future of being a consumer and being a worker looks like in this brave new world, we're entering into with an economy that is increasingly concentrated you need to listen to what? Stacy Mitchell has to say about just how big Amazon's. Ambitions on. You
