Nuggets' Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray lead improved energetic effort to beat Clippers in Game 2

"Yesterday the nuggets lead. wire-to-wire top the clippers tie the series at one game apiece a little surprising sure I mean they got off to a huge lead and held onto the victory lead biggest takeaway from the nuggets game two victory over lic. So many positives take of this from Denver they jump. The clippers gave him the off punch in the mouth from the start, which is to say it was led by their styles, Jamal and nickel Yokich. They got lots of contributions from other guys as well. MILLSAP I thought was good in this game. Gary. Harris Marco Porter Jr. coming off the bench gays in the middle of a lift as well and even rant. Jeremy Grant was their defense I thought was exceptional. There was a several times where the clippers were in the pint and there was two or three Denver Nuggets, contesting shot blocking shots, and really making the clippers feel them in the paint, which is important. But the biggest takeaway for me is we knew the clippers we're GONNA come back. This is a twenty point late in the first half and it. was like in the NBA that never lost especially in the playoffs. The biggest question for me would the nuggets be able to hold onto this game and win it, and there was a crucial moment that minutes ago in the fourth quarter I think it was Po Georgia to three brought to a five point game and that was the sliding doors moment of the game. What would the nuggets through from? And began to our and just show that that first quarter net hop surge was nothing more than like. All right. We don't get swept all would they actually be able to maintain what they've played up to for that point and they did they came out and hit three threes after that and basically stretch the game out and Kinda sealed it from there. You know like it was sort of sent the message that the clippers like we're. Not going away and and again, it wasn't just Murray and Yokich was other guy is contributing and so to me it did sort of say, Oh, I, picked I, think the clippers to win this five. But after watching that performance in the way that they won that wire to wire, I'm a little more now convinced that the the the nuggets can make this series and an an a longer series I still think clip is ultimately win it. But if it goes six or seven, now, I wouldn't be surprised because I just thought that the Denver Nuggets after Guy Wander the first quarter they thought it off well, and then they just Kinda sunk from there and Michael Malone said we need to have better energy for the entire game and they absolutely did last night. So very impressive performance from everyone yokich again was great and so is Mary but really important that those other. Guys contribute and make this more than just a sort of a like a like a run in that first quarter just to get just to get system, they actually sustain that the entire game. So that's what I thought was most important for the nuggets at the something there that they can build on going forward in this

"Because right now, they're the point where earlier in the season. It was like they were not healthy, and they were winning despite that. But now, they everybody's healthy. Besides Michael porter. And they have too many guys Ahah Thomas since returning has it's unfortunate. He's just not been good. And I think that has not ruined the bench chemistry, but it is hampered it. I wonder at what point do they go back to just playing Morris and Beesley off the bench, and then Thomas would have to take just a deep bench reserve role because right now they're playing too many guys as they have to play too many guys, but it's worth investing that time now to try to get IT back to seventy five percent of what he was final season in Boston that year, he plays fifth in MVP, boating. But I do wonder at what point does Malone pull the plug on that. And just get back to the primary rotation that he wants to be using in the playoffs to the rotation and all that before the postseason one. The other thing is the whole Gary Harris deal since he has come back. I believe he's only had to double digit games one of which was that blow out of the Lakers, and he was installed in the starting lineup, and that had been Beasley and they looked really good. And you know, I was a few of in my praise with Beasley. But it just it feels like it's been a little bit of a tough go for Gary Harris, he missed those games. And then he came back for a bid. And then he missed a bunch more games and trying to get him back in that starting lineup as not necessarily helped because it felt like they were really cracking even without Harris. And now you got to implement them back into the mix. Right. And he wasn't very good against a warriors other. I mean, they gotta get it back to what they were. Because this is a team that had upside to go all the way to the Western Conference finals and right now they're in a spot where. Slipped three seed, and they can be prone to a first round upset if they're not able to get themselves back to what they were at the beginning of season in into deep into the midseason. All right. They are trying to hold off the Houston Rockets. They need a win tonight against Minnesota Timberwolves nuggets versus T wolves tonight at ten thirty eastern..

"I feel like primitive and sizes so important and now Denver is really small on the perimeter. And I think one thing that the nuggets did to really get themselves back in the game. Was it was Wilburton? We'll Barton was a huge energy guy. Getting all these defensive rebounds bringing the ball up the court pick and rolls. He really brought the energy and one thing that I was wondering is like they brought Gary Harris off the bench, and I can kind of see Barton, and Gary Harris being kind of these like boys in in the back court to kind of like maintain a certain level of equilibrium with this with this nuggets offense. I kinda like when Yokich is not playing right. Yeah. So you know, you kind of enable Gary Harris more as a primary and secondary play Merican playmaker in the second unit. I honestly think this is probably me being partial to my guy, Maleek Beasley who kind of really works that in that starting lineup. He's a. Perfect off ball threat. And he's I think as a starter. He's actually got fifty fifty ninety splits the guys sites. Interesting ridiculously efficient. It makes sense because a guy like that off Yokich, right? He's doing less thinking yoga just giving them more shots as opposed to be more of a crater from self from the second unit. Right. And that's just not something that the nuggets have necessarily seen out of Beasley yet. And so, you know, I would rather give that role to, you know, someone who is a little bit more accomplished a little bit more familiar with like, Gary Harris, it's not a demotion in my in my mind. But like if you can have a super sub especially with the team that has the kind of depth that the nuggets have I've got to Boone they're gonna be fascinating to watch the playoffs and never been there before they have so many young guys. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they look like. Yeah. What one thing that? I worry about you know, and and it's obviously something that's been on our minds for the past two years is just like what does Yokich look like on defense in the playoffs. Like he was in trouble yesterday. And when he's in trouble. He he just doesn't offer anything on defense because he knows how much she has to expand on offense. And so he's basically just like letting guys drive by him because there's nothing really he can do. He doesn't have like the margin for error with his physique. Yeah. It feels like for them matchups will be key. Yeah. Is there is there any team? That's in the hunt for like the seven and eight seeds that you think might be able to give them like a legitimate scare. Well, I mean, the Lakers obvious. Yeah. Right. Lebron Lou LeBron always out the looming. I know LeBron's not scared of them whether that matters or not, I don't know. Right. Yeah. Is there anything else that we should touch on with the jazz? I I think that that win was just really impressive. I we. We we basically covered, you know, the their ideal lineup, which I guess we should reiterate it it would be Donovan Mitchell. Royce oneal Joe eagles Jae Crowder. Joe Ingles Jae Crowder and really go bare. Okay. So fun and small sample size. Those guys are plus twenty six point six and sixty five minutes this season that is that is insane. That is ridiculous. And it's also like just a massive defensive unit like Mitchell might only be six three, but he has a six ten wingspan, which essentially means he's a six six wing switchable. Yeah. Yeah. And to me like with Rubio and Mitchell, I feel like Rubio has training wheels for Mitchell. Like Rubio take care of the ball. He'll run sats, blah, blah, blah. But he's you know, he's a point guard. Not a great shooter takes bottom Mitchell's hands. And leaves you lot more small on the perimeter. Like to me Rubio was a guy. He gets you only so far then you gotta let them go. Right. Yeah. And I think one thing that's really fascinating about the jazz. This. Year and last year is that you know, there once again kind of surging in the second half of the year..

"We know the influx of new national TV deal that changed all the contracts and that. Just changed the economics. And if you weren't gonna adjust your team building strategy to the new economic landscape in the NBA, you probably weren't going to be successful. We were successful because we were able to identify a bunch of value contracts put them together. This was led by Danny ferry who started this with the Joe Johnson trade that you know, was kind of done by Billy, and Danny that we were texting about before this. But then that was set up to take advantage of the pre spike money will now you look at the current financial landscape for some of these teams and what happens is the team. It's great for team to be competitive until the point you have to pay the team, and then the team gets expensive and all these teams that that we've talked about they're pretty much at that point where they are, you know, right begins the tax in the tax or potentially in the future going to look to be in the tax. And so the question then becomes can you afford to rebuild? And that's a big question. Because there's there's significant unknowns on the flip side, there's a really fair question to ask is can you afford to not rebuild because all you gotta get one great player. Like, you mentioned in in Memphis, and you might have a chance he's young. And he's he it's gonna take a couple of years. But look what Dallas done with Luca Danni. It's like they clearly have a great path forward. Because Luca is just a terrific young player. So it's a really fair question. They're huge organizational decisions. But I would just kind of position that if you rebuild correctly like Philly has done like Oklahoma City has done. It's every organization up for great success long-term in the future and west I think what it shows too. How important is hit on some of these draft picks. I mean, if you are the you're looking at the standings today in Denver sin that one and how they've been able to build that team through the draft with Yokich in Murray and. Gary Harris, you know, they made the will Barton trade, you know. And then added some veterans with, you know, Peasley to they made the they signed Millsaps. But if you're if you're sitting there and you're looking at New Orleans who hasn't drafted great or traded picks. You know, we talked about Memphis with you know, besides Jaren Jackson. Now, you start to see the fruition of Dallas with Don-Shik that h-have we hit on some of these draft picks and build a good foundation. It gives us a kind of a buffer until you know, you have on a rookie contract four years until we have to pay them. And on the flip side, you look at a team like Detroit, you know, you have to go out and make high risk trades like Blake Griffin trait. I think if you're asking yourself right now, then I think you'd probably get a split decision. Would you trade Tobias Harris and Shakeel Alexander for Blake Griffin right now. And that's probably a good internal debate. But I understood why Detroit how to do it because you had missed out on some of your your draft picks. But I just think it shows you the priority that you. You know that you need to put when you comes to. When it comes to the draft. And you mentioned, you know, you when you talk about even Dallas Dallas has missed on a lot of picks. They haven't they've traded picks to in previous years, but Dallas had missed on a lot of picks for a while. And what ends up happening it seems. Now, they hit it with Donncha in a big way. And he's gonna maybe ultimately make up for a lot of that. But what happens right guys when you don't hit on your picks, and you don't have players on Reno rookie contracts than then then then you resign in do your extension with you end up giving max deals to west Mathewson of giving a max deal to channel Parsons and even Harrison Barnes, you end up having to over you have space, but you're you're over paying that second even third tier guy, and it just messes up your whole structure, it's hard to build a team that way..

"It is I think maybe more important than ever. But for them to have lost, Gary Harris will Barton and Paul Millsap and still have the record that they've had and without question. Like you say not enough can be said about yoga eighteen points. He's ten rebounds. He's you know, rounded up, eight assists. You know, a steel and a half a game. This guy obviously is going to be in the all star game for the first time in his career. And if he keeps playing like this it's going to be a streak of a ton of all star games. This just crazy and coup. Does to Mike Malone and them for being able to keep on trucking? Because most teams when they take even one of those injuries. You know, even like losing somebody like a Barton can really be troubling. And we're seeing like, you know, the clippers lost Lou Williams there for an amount of time, and it's hard. But I mean to lose Harris, pardon and Bill sap, that's crazy that they've just kept on. And so it's remarks you'd be fun to watch them. Yeah. Should be fun to watch them play. Dallas tonight. Everybody got all excited yesterday about the Knicks story that James Dolan might sell them. And at least would listen and that number five billion thrown around. And I was like oh my God. Billion? I think we both agree. The world would be a much better place. The NBA would be a much better place. If somehow some way there was someone that would come up with the money and get that team away from James Dolan because poor management as be filled them for many many a year. Now, I mean, it would be great for the rest of the league odyssey. If they had somebody that was a great owner in New York. But I as I said last week New York deserves right? Like, I mean, this is they paid quite the price for their fandom by being owned by James Dolan. So at least a little bit of adrenaline shot into many a Knicks fan yesterday when the idea was even floated that he might come off that team, right? Yeah. I think James Dolan can help his cause if he learns from himself, and he runs the Knicks the same way he runs the New York Rangers. Just don't do anything except open up your check books because he's already proven that. He's. Willing to pay. That's one good thing about James Dolan. Unlike all owners, he's willing to pay. And that's something some fan bases are never going to have. There's never going to have a team or an owner. That's willing to pay the luxury tax James Dolan is. That's a good thing. But now he just needs to learn from himself. Just step back. Don't say anything don't do anything. Don't try to change in model with what the front office is doing. And then maybe things will be good last thing because this may be the only opportunity that you get and certainly I will not even get to talk to you until after Christmas time, Kevin they are seven at twenty four. But your beloved bright future. Sons have rattled off three monster wins in a row. It may be the only opportunity you get the entire season to brag and talk up your bright future. Sons the floor is yours. You know, Chris. I feel like this is at the end of around the horn where when when you get an opportunity just to say whenever you wanna say. I would never pass up an opportunity to talk up the bright future. Sons of Ben on that bandwagon for over two seasons now and whether they're winning or losing games. I'm always going to feel like this team has a bright future. Because when you look at Devon Booker.

Yes, he said, I don't necessarily enjoy the Gary Harris nickname segment, but I'm hung over and listening to podcasts and thought I Google to see if he had any nicknames. His Wikipedia nickname is Gary Gary Harris, Harris. Maybe we should just go with Gary Harris, squared Gary Harris's father is named Gary Harris, also, so maybe he's Gary junior. Gary Harris's Twitter handle is at that's g. So I'm assuming his close, friends and family. Call him g g fourteen summit is kind of dope. If Gary was a political science major. Unfortunately, he majored in marketing g fourteen is still pretty good though. And then he signed off. I kind of hate myself for having done any fourteen summit is not a good nickname tram. I'm sorry g fourteen is not bad though. Reminds me of I believe it was rush hour things. Something was g fourteen classified. Yeah. I mean, I feel like when we get into the g plus the number. I'm thinking private jets G four achieve five. Am I g fourteen to me that sounds like an incredible plano, Gary Harris has the ops to really satisfy that? Also calling him just g that's g I don't Lee can't do that. Okay. If I don't think anyone should. I don't think he's good outsiders. Can't be like all gee, had a great name. Paul George of Oklahoma City Thunder sides with Jimmy Butler

"Reports have. Surfaced, George Sodano from ESPN is the main source of this. He says that the heat and the timber wolves had a deal done for Jimmy Butler. The two teams were exchanging medicals, which is the universal sports. Signed of a trade is done is. Now, let's make sure that this guy doesn't have a need. That's about to explode. They were exchanging the medicals and Tom tibidow called Pat Riley and asked for an additional piece to throw in at the last minute in the deal, Pat Riley called him in for and hung up. The phone on him. But as you've read reports all week for major awards and asking others. The two teams will certainly the heat hope to reengage with the timber wolves here before too long. My question is. How long till the nuggets get in there. How long till the nuggets decide you know, what let's throw our hat into the ring we have been through this as an organization before at some point this situation becomes untenable with a superstar that wants out the nuggets dealt with that with Carmelo Anthony. So. Could we potentially take advantage because my my guess is? That the nuggets have. You know, thrown at taxed maybe sent a Facebook message to the timber wolves. My guess is they haven't pushed very hard. Nothing more than just overtures and normal GM GM speak. Because one if you believe reports the nuggets label, Gary Harris is untouchable along with Nicole Yokich Jamal Murray, which I think is a nice thought, but. Let's be fair. At what those three guys are one of those guys does not have as high as ceiling as the other two, right? Like, I love Gary Harris. And I love what he's become but to label. Gary Harris untouchable is a little bit. Surprising. So there's that. But then there's also the idea of why in the world would the timber wolves wanted trae Jimmy Butler to the team that they just barely beat out for the postseason last year. And while that's still a valid question. If I were on, Minnesota's sports talk radio. I would be saying do not trade Jimmy Butler two the nuggets if you got to get rid of them get rid to the Eastern Conference. But again, how long? Can put up with questions like that. How long can Scott late in deal with being yelled at at practice by Jimmy Butler? How long can Karl Anthony towns Andrew Wiggins and Jimmy Butler awkwardly tiptoe around each other in the timber wolves locker room? I would say

"Giral murray from kentucky gary harris from michigan wilson chandler is on that team he's four hundred years old is mill sap on the i don't know home mil side on who's the coach richie out abbado vote's not nobody knows who the coach of denver's michael malone who i don't know that's all i can tell you slam malone the bar owner so they're in they're in the playoffs where they will lose to houston in the first round yes i was rooting for the other team wires rooting for the other team honestly because will bon because the dome coaches that team and i'm just so tired of tom typical grady's tom timoteo is to basketball what billy martin was to pitching staffs he played with wears you out is you have nothing left he plays guys forty three minutes and i didn't want them to make it and i didn't want jimmy you know because the wilbad play guys on all day jimmy butler like in his third or fourth game playing forty and tim it appears to be like he's approaching rickman gera size i mean he every time archer to me he doesn't do anything but coach that i mean i think he he's one of those like sleeps at the facility dudes these ask you ballers of a local nature the washington wizards with the ability to play if washington beats orlando last night and i know it's at orlando but orlando going into that game was twenty four and fifty seven that no good one it's not good it's one of the five worse records in the nba going into that game they had nothing to play for and their coach was going to be fired if washington wins that game they play boston in the first round of the playoffs boston's two best players gordon hayward who never played and kyrie irving.

"Okay nice foundation you had yokich you had gary harris then you'll get your mammary nice pick he plays well as a rookie last year will barton gives you a little spark off the bench you trade away nerkez you win forty games things are progressing upward but this offseason they made moves they traded away gaulan ari they went and got what they thought was a strong defensive guy paul millsap wing position and here they are still looking outside in right now into those plans like thirty game win so i do denver because they were playoffs or bus i mean the bucks are in are making the playoffs maybe you're right i agree they probably would've thought they'd been higher in the seedings but may not be making this now because he's still got a lot of road games a lot of tough teams and teams above them were playing pretty well so i go denver last couple weeks have been really bad for that loss to the grizzlies i should have just said that and stop there the last of the grizzlies basically the net writing on the road is the complete opposite of what it is so they're incredible at home but then they go on the road and then just the different team altogether and that's just that's just not winning basketball to expect to make a real threat in the playoffs trae what is the answer we disagree on this one we've got great debate going on i think it's got to be the nuggets on account of the mill sat back and they brought up and that no playoff streak and it's not happening so far anyways switching subject i hope you guys like laughing because we had some great jokes in the league last night and sack on future fifth starter vince carter straight up mocked blake griffin complaining about a foul call spot on impression while in cleveland kevin love made his return of the cavs and was back stroking the sideline during play while he was on the court at one point both funny the funnier moments vince impression or loves backstroke what you've got what a league that was great.

"You need you need an alpha nicoli yokich can be your best player but you have to have somebody that's comparable to nicole yokich that can also diop the other teams best player in this case last night it was some guy named james johnson yeah install and i know they have gary harris last night but this is the problem that has always been the case they don't know who takes a shot at the last minute should be and there's nobody that you could just stick on the other teams best player in say now somebody else has to beat us no there's nobody on this nuggets team consistently i think gary hairs comes the closest you think meg yokich could get as good as novitsky like do you think that's in the cards for him because when dirks teams were doing well he was always still the best player but he wasn't really the alpha on the court if that's the model the nuggets wanna go with they need to find some guys that are some grizzle dudes that will die for balls you know they gotta have guys like gary hairs that can hit threes they need to go that route if they're gonna keep yokich because for me i think dirks a much better nikola is right now at this point and i i'm not sure if you'll get to that level that all that's besides the point because we can go on for three hour program debating nicoli yokich and building your team around him but the fact of the matter is every year we end up coming to the same conclusion this team should just run up and down the court nonstop they should play like the houston rockets they're the team that got tired last night at sea level they looked exhausted that is true but we always come back to this conclusion and last night in of itself is frustrating but it's not a bad loss miami is a playoff team and you're playing them on their home court but it's exacerbated it's made worse when two nights before you didn't bother to show up against the western conference's worst team that is to full games out of the playoffs and they're.

"Left for most of these teams what do you think you know i it's interesting because a lot has changed and yet they're still quite quite a lot of not a lot of time of like you said only ten eleven twelve games you know depending on every team's different but that's enough time to make up two games i mean if l aches la has hot denver gets hot and minnesota stays cold they could feel that spot there's still a lot of time left i certainly think we've seen separation for portland in oklahoma city there's there's very very slim chance that either of them would ever miss it and san antonio also winning four in a row against the warriors minus steph minus klay minus stream on minus katie they wanna big game last night to give them a little bit of a cushion as well clearly a terrible time for the clippers to lose three in a row and terrible break for denver losing gary harris when they need it most that's huge gary harris you know obviously nicole yokich is their their best player but gary harrison their best two way player 'cause yokich doesn't play liquor defense and gary harris's going on both ends of the floor bad timing there but even that wild double overtime game against miami hundred forty one points denver gave a hundred forty nine miami double ot yokyo gigantic game but thing i mean i i don't want to go off topic here but yogurts to get better on defense man he's got he's he's got to get better on the better on the floor to really reach the potential that he can't especially when he's going to be getting paid because they're gonna have to pay him soon i tell you this you know he he has gotten the cops a lot over the years i actually saw them in person over the weekend and obviously an incredibly disgusting loss on their end the grizzlies had lost nineteen games in a row for god's sakes and they came in and denver needs every game like blood and they lose that game and so i saw them and it was i mean let's say i wasn't impressed but here's the thing on yokich he's drawn the comps to marcus all a lot he.

"Yet thing yeah the the they moved on and your why would they give i had this conversation with adam ours who does their local podcasts out there denver on twitter actually and they're his point was kinda like do you want to sacrifice minutes for a team that wants to make the playoffs to see if he can develop some of those good habits like i don't know if they're it that when it's it's not eat but it's not even it's it's not even just that like when you framing in that way it comes across like all do you want to sacrifice minutes jamir nelson so that he can develop but the problem is there are other young guys ahead of them gutters light jamal marring is just better at it right and gary harris all the more of a combo he's better added to and so you you in this way swear we are not really it's all giving other young put young players i'm giving his peers the opportunity pretty much because they're more ready to contribute um and then i think also as this offense continues to evolve and be the play creation of the offense is big century meaning really jamal murray and gary harasses ability to be a point guard not as important i can take a discount on the point guard ability because they have yolk it's an how paul millsap and both are excellent passing big post so now what's more important to me is can you score can you can you keep your uh can keep the defense honest with which a shooting and those are really really are areas that would you struggles in.

"I do kinda wonder where that money might have been for gary harris i i think i think it's a fair bet it's a fair gamble 'cause i love gary harasses as a player and i and i would not knock them for giving him that money but the same time were were about to enter an era and basketball where we're we're we've got adjusted to the rising cap at like huge increases each year but that's not going to happen any more um so that's that makes it a risk in the sense that it's conceivable that on the market next seller the most scary hairs could get offered is like twelve million annually and if you're giving him that deal now you are shorting herself next summer which hinders flexibility moving four ford when it comes to having the sign other guys that are gonna be coming up so i don't love it from denver but at the same time i get it i i just think you really need gerry harris to become the guy that you think he can be and i think he can be but like ustr said curse in regards to the sixers we think battle alive and oftentimes it doesn't always happen so there i just i just right now in this but this free agent market and this climate rather i just don't really see the incentive to sign these guys for huge deals right now when you can just wait until next summer that's that that's what was interesting about the report yesterday from shops rania that the celtics hadn't even contacted marcus smart on a contract extension so the prior to the october succinct deadline because there is no rush.

"Over money to keep him you don't spend three or four hours talking to tim connolly if you're not intrigued by what he says i think that that dwayne weighed meeting and look let's look at that dwayne weighed meeting if they signed dwayne way not only does that take a significant amount of their caps face so they have none really to play with this year or they have some but takes a significant chunk of their salary cab to sign dwayne wade and then what happens with gerry harris gary harris head of breakout year last year dwayne wade's on that team now gary harassed never happens so i so i think or at least gary his breakout season never happens so from that standpoint think the nuggets it's a win it's multiple wins for the nuggets because they don't end up getting dwayne way so they so gary harris breaks out and they have money now to play within this summer and also dwayne wait a very well respected nba player has shown the rest of his colleagues the nuggets have something interesting bruins they are worth listening to and i think that's why you see chris paul taking a meeting with the nuggets there's only two things that really that should matter that should matter winning in money those are the two am put him in whatever order you wanna put him in but those are the two things that that should matter now for chris paul is a family man maybe the market matters which i would say for single guys i'll be the first to say that denver's not the greatest city for singles those but for a family for a guy that's already settled down he and you can't be colorado be serious that's a great it's a great place so i do think with chris paul that is that is part of it but really guys.
