NHL Teams Will Feature Ads on Jerseys Starting in 2022-2023 Season

"Will appear a tad differently next season. We're going to see advertisements on player's jerseys. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the league generated over $100 million in revenue last season by selling ad space on players helmets. Now the league will allow sponsors to advertise on three inch by 3.5 Inch spaces on NHL jerseys, which teams can begin to negotiate. Sales on the NHL joins the NBA, W NBA and Major League Soccer and using player jerseys has billboards. Advertisers patches on NBA jersey slightly smaller than we will see in the NHL. That's

What i'm sensitive to this whole evanger keene situation and a lot of people i talked to are the team that you know everybody's caught up in the allegations and what's been posted on social media but i think there are also people involved here who are sensitive to the fact that no it looks like he's headed to a divorce and you know i'm sensitive divorce personally jeff. Because in my family there have been a few of them and my friends have been through a few of them. And i see the bite it takes out of everyone involved and you know there's a young child here to a young daughter so i think people are really sensitive to that that the qian's are going through a very difficult difficult situation and if you can avoid it you don't wanna make it worse. You want to try to find a way to make that as easy as possible on everyone involved including the child so some of the people i've spoken to are like that's the big thing. We really should be worried about here. And i wanted to say that. Cain released a statement on his social media accounts on sunday morning. Denying the gambling

That no call. I mean the guy is paralyzed. Don't even is he still in the game but when it happened i thought he was paralyzed for life. But no call right in front of the wrath. I mean a miranda has to be like absolutely. He's probably behind bars at this point after that no call. Wouldn't you think yeah. I think i saw him tweet. Something to the effect of it's like they don't wanna go in. The league wants to go back to montreal. They wanna end it tonight. They don't want to have to go back to montreal. Deal with crossing the border and doing all that he's like he's saying they're a take. I agree with him. I i'm saying. I think it's ridiculous that the league and the teams and everybody involved wouldn't wanna go back for another game when the seasons about and five minutes we wanted. It's because it is because of the refs. This should have gotten a penalty shot and if not at least two minutes at least power play. And they gave him neither and then he got yanked. I thought the wraps in this game tonight proved how wrong gary bettman is and how awful they are and how completely on the take they are. They're just completely they're like you. "The dispute here Now. I don't think that that is totally Preventing the season from coming. I think it is a little bit more the challenges of having some of your teams located in Canada and most your team's locating the United States, and they can't travel to each other. All right. Guess teams from Canada can come down here. But They can't go back. And teams in the United States can't go into Canada without Long quarantine two weeks or 10 days or whatever it is. I think that's more of an impediment on the beginning. Of the season than the dispute over money. But as we know these disputes over money 10 to Permeate into other decisions that are made. As far as the season goes, so I don't think it's Not affecting it. Don't think it's the predominant reason why The NHL has been At least they're being perceived to be stalling on the beginning of their season and Gary Bettman Spoke. Yesterday. On, he says, because Cove it is going through a second wave. Which could be worse than the first wave and between Thanksgiving and the aftermath of what they think is going to happen for Christmas and the aftermath. We're taking our time and making sure that we that as we look for ways to move forward, we're focused on health and safety and doing the right thing. Is it health and safety first and foremost, Probably Call me a cock eyed optimist, but I believe that Gary Bettman does have player health and safety at the top of his list. What Looking out for that player, Health and safety also has an impact. On the bottom line. So maybe it's a one a one b thing. We see this all the time. With with hockey. We talk about this with baseball, but it's never you know when people talk about baseball. Declining in baseball, you know, potentially dying off and all of this stuff. It's nothing compared to the hits that the NHL has taken. Over the years, right because they're not even really considered. Major sport anymore. In our country. Baseball still is. Just how much longer will they be? Consider that, but the NHL's night it It's the Big three and hockey. Really? And we say this every time something like this comes up, not a pandemic, but And an issue with the NHL season. We say this might be They can't afford. To miss a season. And a long ways they can't I mean, certainly from like, how great were and I'd love to pose this question. To somebody who isn't Big hockey fan. And I know like if you're in the hockey, you're into hockey, right? I mean, there's no How do you be? How are you? A casual fan of hockey. Get just one of those sports that if you like it, you're all in on it. I'm curious if somebody wouldn't consider themselves a die hard hockey fan. What they thought about the playoffs because People were watching. Right, because that we had gone so long without sports, So people watch hockey that maybe hadn't been watching before. I thought overall Their bubble. Was Really successful. As much as I did not like. Returned to play format. I thought it was incredibly compelling. Even in it and I understood why the NHL You know, expanded the way they did expand their postseason the way they did to accommodate certain markets and also the sheer number of teams. MBA did that, too. They instituted the plan for the eight seed and stuff so they could bother so they can invite more teams and all that kind of stuff, so I get it. I didn't want it to be a permanent change. And then I watched this thing I still don't want it to be a permanent change. Like for the weirdness of 2020 I I thought it was incredibly compelling sports television. Have these, you know, playing rounds? Not the NHL did a lot of really good things. And Adam Silver gets All this credit as he deserves. But I thought Gary Bettman deserve the level of credit, too. Any child pulled two bubbles on Successfully. And Gary Bettman, of course, has been much maligned. Over his time as any joke commissioner. I've got credit where credit's due. NHL did a great job. In Toronto and in the end Minton And you would hate As people love hockey, you would hate to see that go to waste. Because the NHL can't figure it out. I'm not asking for hockey to lead the way here. And they're not Right. The MBA once again. Is being the leader on this because they're not on Lee. The ones Who got things back up and running. First But they're also the team that's going to make another season work in a pandemic before any NBA NFL still going through their first season, the pandemic. Baseball. We don't expect back toe March or April. The NHL's should be right there. And I did that They have some other obstacles that they have to figure out. What you need to figure them out. Because as well as you did, pulling off these two bubbles in Toronto and Ed Minton If you can't figure out a way. Get going by January, 1. I mean, when are you going to play? And how many games is that gonna be Because the MBA starting in December and they're playing what? Seventies seven. So if the NHL is going to start and not that the NHL is that all beholden to the Olympics, I think the MBA tried to do some things to allow some of their athletes to go compete in the Olympics. NHL doesn't have to worry about that. But still, you don't run a run up against this summer Olympics..

"Prior and the reason is their system is like playing underneath a wet blanket like you can't go anywhere the grind the understand that that's how their team is supposed to play. I think they're going to be really good. They're going to be a problem in this playoff so I I don't mind. Saint Louis Tampa is my pick as for an underdog pick. I don't know what really qualifies I mean it's hard I think Colorado can be. Yeah I think Colorado can sting somebody there there so fast so young does experience matter. I I guess. They had a couple of rounds last year. If their goal tending holds up I think Colorado can be dark horse. I like Boston. The East I like Saint Louis in West liked the experience of the Saint Louis Blues. Obviously darkhorse teams for me. The Toronto Maple leafs PANDERING THE TORONTO. Maple leaves and I would concur. I there's not a whole lot not to like about the Colorado Avalanche and it seems a little bit disrespectful. Colorado is a dark nasty just given a good hour. We've got a rapid rate. Hey remember last week when we were we were teeing up episode thirty two and I said. Hey we've got a heavy hitter. We have a heavy hitter for episodes thirty two and I joked that it was going to be James Duffy. But I didn't know what was going to be commissioner Bettman but I was hopeful given that we expected there'd be some news this week which there was that we'd we'd again either revisit don with gunfire or bringing the commissioner and the Commissioner was was kind enough to join us here in episode thirty two but at some point do we need to bring in James like he's James Quality enough to to sustain the interest level of the rain dregs podcast faithful. While I'll say yes I think I think James. You know now another award winner. Right Jeff. I know another award. I'm sure he'll have all his awards behind him As he does the interview. But let's be. Let's be a little cautious about promoting him as a big deal right. I mean he is I. I'll tell you why I think James is the best when I walked into the studio the first time in. I saw the chaos around his chair. I'm like how does this knucklehead even get on the air now and he's highlighting and writing and and and then you know his wife will call study. He's got to have a yogurt and he has a yogurts and then he drops the spoon and then he goes Hello Canada. And I'm like now see do it so I think just to have him on to explain how that brain works or whatever but he's I wouldn't call quality or qualify him. It's a it's a big guest. Would you know no? I wouldn't but he so. Let's make an agreement here because you know we call run the reindeer eggs hockey podcasts. Let's pencil him in not righted in panelists pencil him in as maybe option see just in case option A or B. A top player coach manager. Zach whatever I mean. Those guys might actually week so the one thing I think will leave this on. Is that if James is the Guy Right I think you and I we could talk to cool back and we should set an over under on. How many times we have to remind James of the time for the interview and look it will be four by and so we'll talk about this in the spirit of tiny. They're Andrey Hockey podcast mascot. Who hasn't made an appearance in the last couple of weeks unbelievably well? It's believable because it happened. The Duffy Hustle just brought in a third dog third dog like a good time for this to everybody's got room to you know yeah so. I'm sure they'll be some dog siding. So we've gotta run rate adds always terrific job. Look forward to speaking with you Friday on sportscenter and mature several times between now on episode thirty three. "It would be nice if everyone understands. But it's not gonNA be. I mean they've just won't be there. The people will think that city that you know the League has a bias against us or whatever it is and they'll do the best they can with it and their reply went away. I'm sure it feel slow. But they're plowing away well every week. The podcast we ask you to send your questions to us by email by going to rigs dot com or on twitter or instagram channels. You can find us at exit will answer a bunch each week right here on the rain. Drake Hockey podcasts. Ray were starting with a question from the Lynn. Lynn wants to know which of the regular season trophy winners. Would you never predicted back in September Before the season started now Lynn says I never had Alex Ovechkin and David Posture. Knock sharing the rocket ver- Sharp. He thought were she thought that. Connor mcdavid or Nathan MacKinnon would win it this year. I'm never going to bet against lovie now but this is a true breakout for posture knock. He's a brilliant player. And what's interesting about that is is if your goal score you need somebody to the set you up like the podcast to come to you and Brad. Marchand has changed his game significantly into becoming more of a passer than shooter and that is aided posture. Knock immensely As far as him the talk I mean look at those guys that are up there and you know. Matthews is at forty seven goals and I would suspect that he would have been in the upper chain of goalscorers. I would've I would've for sure. Had LOVIE IN IN MY GROUPING WHILE. I wasn't so surprised by that. I don't know you know I guess. The the other awards are going to be voted upon. But you know my vote for the for. The North will be Roman nosy. I wouldn't have had him there. The start the air interesting. I'm looking forward to that. You know that's a fun time of year when you add to submit your votes because I know you take it very seriously as do i. And it's just not a Meta process where you sit down and put pen to paper. I mean you know. I'm not going to be critical of all the major voters but you do have to analyze the season right not just economic of the season you have to put everything in perspective in wing those votes and it's hard to not have. Roman near the top of the draft off the list and thinking about the Norris from Carter Rape. It's great that the NHL as announcer plans to resume. But what if there is a second way that hits the United States or Canada in September October as the Stanley Cup final is perhaps underway at that point. You can't keep going. Can you be asked in once you pause again? How crazy would it be to try and restart A month or two later once the second curve has flattened. Now I'll jump in here but I want your thoughts on it as well for me. I think that that's part of the the the thinking behind the twenty four team event. Right I mean you expedite that process. We don't know that the first round sack around aren't going to be best of five. They WanNa get that whole thing done as quickly as possible number one. You've got a lot of business to deal with. You've got the draft. You've got free agency You've got all of those things the awards we just talked about half to be have to be manage. But there's also a cushion built in in the event there is a second wave so I believe the NHL feels comfortable that if there is a second wave and they have to go into pause again. They'll be able to do it. And if they have to start two thousand twenty in twenty one in December. They're fine with that to this may be Showing my ignorance to this but I think this is the entire reason. Why when we talk about a hub city. We're talking about the bubble that the players are in you were. There can be virus exposures all over the place. If you're in a bubble and you were tightly controlled as to your movements. Isn't that the whole point? Dregs of of being in the bubble is now you're trying to. You'll do your best to limit the exposure to any potential virus. Contact as you can so. I think that's one of the reasons the league would would be comfortable continuing to play if there was a second wave but I I think this is important is people that have been studying viruses for their entire professional lives. Thirty forty fifty years their advice to us on. May the twenty eighth is different than our advice on the thirteenth. The smartest people that have been studying these viruses. Their entire lives are learning as they go. How could we suspect that the League would know all the answers when the doctors don't yeah and so again I A senator earlier I think they've done a terrific job. Planning this stuff out into the minute detail as they can but there is no guarantee for short. Now all right. I love the name Clive. Clive is I don't know work-life you know. I just liked the name. It's like a cartoon character So we have a question from Clive in Saint Louis Hike live. I see the odds makers are giving the Saint Louis. Blues fourth-best odds to win the Stanley Cup behind the Boston. Bruins Vegas Golden Knights Tampa Bay lightning and just ahead of the capitals and Colorado Avalanche. Clyde thinks that they're they will face the Boston bruins in the Stanley Cup final. So who do you like right? And who is your darkhorse team or teams in this year's Buzz Zarro playoff format. I picked Tampa before the pause. And I'm GonNa stay with them now. I happen to feel that. Even though this is a unpredictable scenario we're coming back in the best teams are still the best teams. The the unpredictability of the Games is still going to be there. But if you've got the best team you're probably going to be amongst the best teams in the end I like Saint Louis Even more in this format.

"I'm going to probably have to make a decision Collectively on this probably in three weeks I think in two weeks will start narrowing down further And then somewhere around three weeks. We're going to have to pull the trigger and finalize the arrangements and make the deposits and doing the things we do to to put on our major events which which is is a different sort of way. How how were you able to come to a format? Which is now the twenty four team. I'm assuming that discussions didn't go so smoothly all the time with everybody. How do you get thirty one teams to agree to anything? But how did you get to this format making the most people as relatively happy? I guess are satisfied as they could be. There is some people at the club level. Certainly some fans certainly some media who as it relates to the team that they're focused on her involved with would like to see something different but we were intent upon having something that was fair that had integrity and also took into account are extraordinary competitive balance in the regular season. Because as you guys know an are fans no are racist down to the wire we had teams on the bubble and and to say to them. Well we're arbitrarily Eappen stopping the regular season as of March twelve and taking the pause. And then say sorry. You played less games than you have less points. So you're out of the playoffs of the teams that thought and actually if you look at history had a realistic chance of making the playoffs and that's why we decided to have the plan round. Make sure that the teams that had a realistic chance got their shot. So the play in round might sound like small stuff to some people but there's likely financial implications of it as well is the will the play in round be the playoffs or the playoffs. The sixteen teams if the the playoffs in its traditional form will be the sixteen teams and this is a qualifying round. It's on some respects depending on what purpose you talking about it. It's a bit of a hybrid By by you know we don't live in a world where we've got much precedent to deal with this and so you have to do it in the final analysis while everybody can pick some aspect they'd like to see different if you look at the overall plan and how it holds together. It's fair is perfect for every team. The answer is no of course not but nothing could be in these unprecedented times. Gary Are we going to see some creative technology? I I mean. Hopefully we're working on that runs events and content. Who you know is already focused on what we can do. Whether it's it's some interactivity through technology with fans whether it's crowd noise whether it's it's using robotic cameras in places we've never done it before he went out blacking anybody's view of whether it's more making which might require even greater delay be monitoring what's going on a buy yes. We are focusing both internally and with our broadcast partners Rogers Sports Net N. NBC. On the things that we can do that. Make this Feel as good as it can feel an representative of what our game is from an entertainment standpoint have you have you been I guess it would be easy to take stuff. From what like the Bundesliga is doing and and can can apply somewhere. Say Oh we like that or not that I mean. It's decent example isn't it but we're we're watching everything that's going on and you know a success you know is is a joint project of everybody will take ownership and failures and offering its. We'll look at the places where people have been successful in imitation. I suppose the highest form of flattery. So when you take all those little cliches you put together. We're watching everything We're looking at things that we think makes sense when one place I forget where US blow up the house. We won't be doing that and we'll and we'll probably do some things on our own that nobody thought yet. And I think our people are really good at that. So we'll we'll be doing all right. Commissioner will leave you with this I mean clearly. Your plate has been full likewise across the League and the NHL Players Association so CBS extension discussions with all due respect. Haven't been top priority. Covid nineteen has been the focus. When will you reengage in terms of those discussions or negotiations? I think it's fair to say that Don here and I are talking at least daily and we are talking about wide range of things. The one of the best things. We started our talk about this. The first thing as we were getting going one of the best things about having a plan in place we now have that foundation and while there's a lot of work to be done there are other things we can focus on as well But there are lots of issues that we happen talking about and we will talk about together again a players association and the players have been great in working and focusing on the issues with US giving US valuable input And making this collaborative which for us to move forward in comeback as strong as I think we can it needs to be collaborative and I'm grateful. It has all right well commissioner. We're grateful that you broke up a busy schedule. I mean there's a lot going on even though you're you're working like the rest of us from home thank you for joining us on the podcast and you and your family and everyone at the NHL be. Well we'll thank you into you and your families and and our fans who are listening and watching you. Please be well in stay safe. Thank you very much. Thank you. Nhl Commissioner Gary Bettman. No dogs barking. We didn't hear the grandson banging pots in the background. But you know there's just something really normal about seeing you right in your home. I'm in my Home Office. And then the Commissioner of the National Hockey League in a comfortable in casual environment just more or less talk in hockey or the business side of hockey as they work through their planning. I thought there's as as as the commissioner was going through and and answering our questions that he looked really calm and amongst the storm of trying to figure out virtually impossible task here too. How do you make the pieces all fit? But it just seems so calm and casual and we don't ever see him like that no like the media and the fans of course we see him at a podium where the reporter sitting in front that are asking him questions. They're not asking about what's his favorite movie. I mean he's under the grill. The right and I I think this is This opportunity of interviews that he's doing changes how people might look at how he goes around his day up business. Commissioner it's person and we don't we don't I mean we don't look at an athlete like a person they're just the guy that wears the sweater and the team that we like our hate if they are a person in there and there's a deeper thing to it. I thought he was terrific. I did too and look. I think. He's being transparent to Disney. They can plan and do whatever they want to the end of the day you know whether hockey returns is going to be dictated by a the health authorities the way it should be. I mean it's not just the safety of the players in the personnel. It's your safety rate. It's Mine. It's our children. I mean and Batman and company of of of mentioned this more than once. They're not looking for favors. In a favourable come perhaps in a travel exemption or lifting a ban or something so that you can get players from ADP or to their hub city in those sorts of things but the rest of is going out and tirelessly be dictated by the authorities. While he was he was pretty clear about you. Know talking about the hub. Cities The enthusiasm the love of the game and he said but there's going to be certain rules that if they are if they are still in place that will take that city out of negotiation and he said and I hope people understand. Of course he knows people won't understand right like if if your city is one of those eight or nine that is in the final mix and they get pulled out of the mix for a variety of reasons but if one of them is it the health authority feels. This is what has to continue to happen..

There's still the fear of the unknown and nobody knows for certain when the NHL Pro Sport is going to be able to be able to return but from your perspective. Is it comforting to know that all the planning all the strategizing all the work that you had to do to get to this point is now complete? Well it. It's really just the first step in effect what we've been able to do And no small part because of the cooperation of the Players Association and the players we we have a framework that now we can build off of. We basically spent the last ten twelve weeks looking at all of the alternatives. Trying to understand and get as much information as possible so that we could make judgments. What was the most sensible way to move forward? And that's what led us to this wing but actually the real work is about to begin now because it's it's having the plan was important and it took a while to get to this point and I'm happy we're at this point but we've now got execute. We talked to Donald Fear. I believe it was the day of the pause and he mentioned that you make a plan. Then you make another plan you make another plan till it's not a plan anymore. It seems so complicated. Like was there times that it almost seemed impossible to get the to hear no never never impossible as a general matter in terms of the way the league functions and. I think you guys know this from dealing with me personally. I always like to make sure that I know everything that we know about a particular matter situation and we always like to have alternatives reasons that we've isolated on a number of cities to be the hub has to promote pose. Just one or two because we WANNA make sure that when we have to make the decision as to which of the right places to go to. We're GONNA know in real time including for example of how much covid nineteen there is in a particular place the availability of testing. Because we're not GONNA do anything that interferes with medical needs and so in order to make sure that we're doing this right. We needed to make sure that we have multiple options so that we wouldn't back into something we would affirmatively be able to choose what we believe. Collectively would be the best course and listen. We didn't start in this place but let me let me terms of the discussion. We're having safety and medical concerns have been paramount in everything that we've been thinking about in everything that we're doing and as it relates to the players. The health concerns are yes of course in nineteen. But we don't want the players back on the ice until their game ready. What would happen and maybe this is too big a hypothetical but it is a possibility. I guess if a player has a personal concern about about playing jumping into a hub city into a bubble and what. I just can't do it. How does the League? How will you going to have to deal with it? It's a good question you know. Obviously there there may be concerns where somebody may have compromised. Health Condition Diabetes Asthma. Something like that. And that's something we're going to have to review with the club and with the player But overwhelmingly A. We're hearing from the players as well as our fans that they want to complete the nineteen twenty season that they want the cup in the competition leading up to it the have the integrity that it always does and our players are anxious to get back the game so there may be a case by case situation we have to deal with and in those situations you focus on the case by case issues and try and do the best. You can now commissioner. I know that the NFL has a team of health advisors likewise with the National Hockey League Players Association based on the data that's been collected to date on. You've done all the planning and as you said earlier the work is just starting now but are you convinced that North America the world will be healthy enough for pros Ford or the NHL absolutely to return not. Nobody's in a position today to give an absolute for a month or two or three from now. But what we what we can do based on the advice to make plans and be ready to be agile enough to execute whatever needs to be done. We have to focus on whether or not the covid nineteen spikes whether it declines. Obviously part of what. Your question entails is in all likelihood and understanding it the games that we played to conclude the nineteen twenty season will not be with fans but the process the phases that we have we think. Get us to a sensible way so we we've asked the players to self isolate in phase one and they've done that and that's why we haven't seen other than the initial outbreak on on one or two teams who were traveling back. We haven't seen a COVID nineteen cases face to be opening training facilities not only giving players a safe place to begin working out even skating. But we're now see will be some testing will see that. Everybody hopefully is okay. Then we moved to training camp again will be more testing and will know what our population looks like. Mclovin nineteen health standpoint so by the time we get to face four and we're actually playing the games. We'll have a pretty good handle on the health of our community. Which is why we WANNA make sure we go to community that has the least amount of covid nineteen because least amount is less risky than a greater amount. Obviously are you are at all surprised with that you know. You've you've pared down to a list of eight or nine potential hub cities. Are You surprised at all? With how how much those cities want them in the lobbying doing yes I mean. It is gratifying. Obviously they understand the they're not making any money off of this. Their fans aren't going to be you know in attendance but in the final analysis. This stems from whether it's the fans the players are teams are owners. It's about love of the game and so they will want it but you know there are going to be some issues with that as well. It in making the decision while we're not asking candidate to change its rules on quarantining when you come into the country as a practical matter if those rules are in effect and what we're doing isn't enough to comply with them then. We're not going to be able to use those cities as a hub city because we can't go from training camp and then have the players quarantine for fourteen days so hopefully the fact that will be running a somewhat isolated. Training camp might help meet candidates needs of from from a transporter standpoint. But if not I HOPE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WE'RE GONNA have to go somewhere else. Is Their time line on that Gary from a Canadian perspective Mo?.

"In the round robin going to match the level of intensity with teams in the qualifying round raid. Were playing literally from their playoff lives. A what's going to be difficult to replicate it for sure but dregs this. This is one of the few times that I will single out the coaches as opposed to the players. Because lots of times you know the coach can do whatever he wants right but at the end of the day he can be a brilliant guy standing behind eighteen guys. That can't get anything done. And then he's not a very smart coach right then then then you get fired. They're paid millions of dollars to be able to reach their players and to prepare them. And so I think this is probably as critical a time for those coaches that are that are going to be in that round. Rahman to make those players understand to prepare them on the ice to get into the Round Robin Games to to play it in intensity level. It'll be commiserate with those play playing games. Because if they don't drink they're going to be a step behind when the playoffs start wants. Those playing games are done. Those teams are going to be primed. Now you can you can argue will be you know. They'll play if the Games are less intensive Ditto probably be healthier right. Have less bangs and bumps and bruises. But the point is if you're not ready to play and that's why I say it's on the coaches you're gonna you're GonNa have some teams that are that are behind. I don't mind the format drake I think is it's gone on. I've liked it more and more. I think we talked I would have preferred twenty teams but twenty four. It is I would like to know the scale of impossibility of trying to get the entire league to agree on one format like like. There's there's zero chance nine so they've come up with this. What I what I would like to see is once you were through the play in round that everybody is reseeded. Yeah and then you can go into the brackets because the the one example was used early. And I don't like it Is same autry all because everybody talks about Carey price pulls off this colossal upset of a team in Pittsburgh. That is a better team and deserves to be know in the playoffs. So say they've upset them. While in the bracket formula was released early. Philly is the number four seed. They would play the winner of that series. Why would the number twelve seed get to play the number four seed? The number twelve seed should play the number one seat. Yeah and I think you can still redo the bracket at that point I to me. That would be the most fair of trying to do the best you can with this colossal thing that you're trying to get off the ground Did you put yourself to sleep several times. You know trying to read through the complexities of the draft lottery process in multiple drawings. I mean the bottom line is a team like Ottawa. Who should be best positioned OR DETROIT? You know to win the lottery and draft first overall has a better chance. I mean the Ottawa. Senators have two picks top sex and collectively twenty-five percent chance of getting their hands on Alexis lefranc but man what a complicated convoluted and imperfect process but again it just speaks to the unprecedented world. You know both hockey and otherwise while I say this is one thing that I didn't agree with when it was presented. I don't see any need to rush the lottery. I don't so why not wait till the play in round is over. Now you know you're fifteen teams that are out and you have the lottery then assign the same odds as you had previously to those fifteen teams and then it's over. Yeah I understand. It's possible and again I'll use. Pittsburgh is an example that they're eliminated and you know they would slot fifteen likely with the lowest odds and Montreal who has no business being in the playoffs. Ten points out. They wouldn't get a chance at the at the lottery. What but that's the way it is now. I would prefer them though drake's to slow down a little bit. I don't quite get the you know the engagement of the fans of Detroit and Ottawa to have the lottery one day. And then it's just poof. It's gone right right like there's no way that you can capture that momentum of the draft lottery. I'd prefer it just be on his much of the same timetable grades as were normally at. You have once. Those teams are established. You have the lottery. Everybody gets their day. The cheer grumpy at were their draft picks. And then you move on to. The playoffs earns do it. Here's a goofy question for you. All right and God it'd be quite. Oh you are. Yeah all right. Who has two thumbs in buys and sells a house during the pandemic this guy why l. man that'll be for another podcast but it was one of those ridiculous scenarios where somebody wants to buy my house. "Of the Ray and drags hockey podcast. Darren Gregor From Company Office here in Brooklyn Ontario Canada. We've got rape Ferraro who's sipping on starbucks. Nice coffee got going on. This one's Austria is that one of our one of the places Drake's we've walked to for men. We've been some places searching these starbucks mugs. Well I was an Austrian. Two thousand five for the World Championship. But I don't think you were there where you know no I must. I must have got this. Oh I don't I don't have to get them only when you there but now I appreciate that but see. You're not as concerned with the change in style and design of the new starbucks mugs as I am that Zach correct. I liked the theme. I like the the continuity of the collection of starbucks mugs that I have worldwide and then they changed it up. Yeah they changed all the graphics and stuff. I'm not bothered by Cami not a fan. Yeah Cami likes the old school the old style ones so we get both styles. That's fine. Look we've got a lot of stuff to unpack from the course of this week. Big News Out of the National Hockey League. We've got any commissioner Gary Bettman joining us here in episode thirty two rate. So there's there's there's a lot that we're going to have to throw at the commissioner but before we get to commissioner later in the episode. I want your thoughts on what's transpired from an NHL perspective this week on on Tuesday. The Commissioner makes his presentation unveiled related on for weeks months now at twenty four team format with a qualifying round. You've got round robin for the top. Four teams in each conference to hub cities although the hub cities haven't been identified yet. But you'll have twelve to twenty four and one hub city twelve of twenty four in the other. It seemed like there was a buzz earlier this week. Like there's excitement that's developing from a fan perspective which I get but I sort of don't yet I mean you have to plan and you have to have things ready but it doesn't feel like we're any closer from a health perspective to actually playing the Games. No I think both Gary Bettman and Donald Fear of been pretty clear that you know this is. This is not the end game. This is like the start of trying to the next step of trying to get everything ready. The players need to be Given enough of a heads up that they can get back into shape that they can work their way back into condition. I mean whether they've been working out or not. They're going to have to start skating and they're going to have to start skating months before they start regular games. So that's kind of the first part of this. The second thing was that document was twenty nine pages right so just think of all the details that they have to flush out and so now that these are flushed out to a certain point now the players association can come back and I like to use this term in this regard in and poke some holes in it and then the the League can try and fill those holes back in and it's part of the given pink of such a complex situation. I mean there. There is nothing to small that they can't have to deal with it and that's one of the things I wanna ask you about. Is that in this timeframe? Has there as it felt like completely overwhelming like man? My whiteboard has got seven hundred things on like. How do you get through it? Because I think they've done a really good job drake's now I I am at times. I think probably like a lot about set critical of how the League steps down the road on some certain things. I don't know how could have done a better job than what they're doing now. And that is just to plan and Replan Darren. I'm just I'm just thought like remember when we had donald fear on yeah immediately falling following the pause and he said and I'll never forget this he said you plan and plan and plan until it's not a plan anymore and then you move onto the next plant. And that's what they've had to do for one hundred days pretty much. Yeah and look the commissioner on Tuesday kept reminding all of us that the can't do anything this is a plan and the plan is ready to be executed but there's nothing that the NHL or the players association do until the government officials in the health authorities across the world. Say All right you can proceed. You can get the game back on the ice and ill Bettman said that. Probably a half a dozen times on Tuesday during his presentation out in the and I'm not being critical. I mean that's the reality this situation but it felt a little bit like there was some campaigning. There too right. And maybe from the for the media or the fans to put a little pressure on the provincial government state governments the federal government's at least that's how it felt but again the safety and the health of the players top priority for both the League in the PA. Why I don't. I don't think it's all unreasonable to think that there's going to be some politicking or campaigning are trying to put a little pressure here in in any regard in this. You're trying to push forward a really ambitious plan where you have to get literally hundreds of people together when the rest of us are being told to socially distance ray so the governments in the health authorities are going to WanNa know. Why can you do this safely? And so as Gary is going through his press her the other day and he's constantly reminding and constantly poking a little bit at this is just a plan. We need help for this to happen. We need to show why this is going to be okay. And it's no different than the province of Alberta. Which is I mean. They're they're all over the federal government now and the National Hockey League to to to that extent in in Canada. If you're listening somewhere else other than candidate is that they want to be a hub city. And so they're campaigning hard and they're campaigning very publicly because they think they've got a terrific plan and I think they do but it's going to part of this. What is allowed to open up? When is it allowed to open up? And don't forget Drake's when when Gary says you know wouldn't the health authorities allow us to play? The guys are coming in their six guys on the ice right now. Not even close to a practice. It's I mean it's the first step like the baby's first step onto your ladder before you get climbing and that's kind of where they are. Are you good with a format I mean the fact that all twenty four teams essentially are on equal footing. Now you've got qualifying round. I'm there's going to be some intriguing match-ups there you've got Edmonton and Calgary or Edmonton Chicago. Winnipeg and Calgary Toronto Columbus. I mean go down the list Montreal Pittsburgh all of that but entire who Nathan MacKinnon earlier this week the drager cafe. He wondered a little bit about the intensity between those two scenarios right. You've got a qualifying run which feels like the play offs. And then you've got a round robin with the top. Four teams in each conference is.

"For the livestream and a schedule of all the great program here on this very network when I'm not on, but for now I am on and what's again graduations to these seem Louis Blues for bring home their first Stanley Cup point hockey there and say Lewis since nineteen sixty seven and for the first time they wanna game in the Stanley Cup finals and they went four games in fact, and that makes them the champs series went the distance. It went seven games but sale Lewis look like they had it early on in Boston in game seven. And it was all they needed. The Bruins did get a goal weight. So they'd send their home crowd off the off season which is crazy. I mean Stanley Cup we Gary Bettman we blew Gary Bettman for really no reason at all other than the fact that it's become tradition and some people love it. So people are just kind of over it. I think you know, in this market here in Phoenix were grateful to Gary Bettman. He's this team here. Paul Tagliabue to do that for the Browns. David Stern did deal for the Seattle SuperSonics but Gary Putman has kept hockey in the desert at expanded of the desert to Las Vegas team that we saw last year's Stanley Cup final. What a what a series what a what a story that they were January third. If trailed every team in the NHL in points bounce back to reach the playoffs. I mean it was it was questionable for a while there. They, they shot up through the wildcard ranks and into a guaranteed spot in vio-, the division round of the playoffs and rhino Riley acquired Vivey, Buffalo Sabres, Pat, maroon interim coach got rid of Mike Yao Bri. You know, they weren't even that pad seven ninety three brand premium Craig ruby, and you're the respite history. Seven games in, you know, they're celebrating their celebrating in Boston a in the gardens, not the act. It's the garden, but the other celebrating at the Boston Garden in front of disappointed Boston crowd. And you know what was the final game seven because it was a runaway late. I think it was four nothing. It was he might have three nothing and the Bruins put went in, and they made a kind of interesting there for a few minutes. But this was Saint Louis game to win. Say Luis would've liked to close it out in game six but nobody was winning on their own mice came one Boston wins on their home ice for two to game four the blues weighed in Saint Louis, four to two not one other game of this series was a four to five all and not one other game in this series did the home team went five of the seven games went to the visiting team was the blues. Three two overtime in game two broods all over it. I thought the series over bridge, go to one. They end up opportunity to go three one, you know again in Saint Louis. Add every time he lost you'll be lost in game one. He bounced back yelled, Igal, the Pru institute goals, Jordan Bennington. Gets destroyed in game three holds them to goals again in game four. Game five the blues win to two one gives up five goals in game six year. Like oh, you can't even start him in game seven. Berbie starts them, and he plays brilliant. You know, for. The about fifty minutes, but fifty five minutes there's like six minutes left. When the Bruins scored I'm not doing this in real time of doing this long after the fact that, you know, I got to joint, I didn't have to think about what I was gonna talk about the night that they won the Wednesday out of out of been on the air. Hey, have to pick about it with the Toronto. Raptors either just kinda got to know how I felt about Toronto. But you know, I also go back Toronto..

"That was the NHL at one time, the NHL maximized, everything that possibly could be in the United States. Gary Bettman was tossed the keys to that Audi. A eight. It now is some plugging leaf car that can't even do forty five in the left lane. That's holding up. Everybody else. NBC goes. Oh, no, no, no. We're good. We're good people care so much about seeing the Bruins in the blues are snow such such entrenched, by the snore fest. That we're going to air a rerun of a songwriter show with John legend on it. And then we're going to show. Dateline NBC. Okay. I'm going to spoil the dateline NBC last night. I'm guessing the husband killed her or the ex boyfriend killed her eighteens murder shake the Nevada community. It was a team then. Okay. I guarantee you, there is a there that that's something that happened last night at teens murder. Shattered a community. The more you know, Lester Holt standing there in front of that fake staircase with the fake, brick my gosh, I think I've seen them all. Sometimes it's really bad. I have seen the same story done on dateline NBC twenty twenty and forty eight hours. Honestly, I've seen them all do the same story. And sometimes I swear somebody else commits the murder when you watch it on one network to not I'm not sure how that works out. We've got game two of the NBA finals tonight because it's really important that you take two days off between games of an NBA final. It's really important that the NBA not play on Saturday night last night. Because I'm sure the NBA was very, very concerned about going up against the Bruins in the blues. And the fifty eight thousand people nationally that watched it. So the NBA had to keep away from that really got. It's good that we're spread now, these games like this, let's really get these guys, a lot of rest, because it's not like the Golden State Warriors didn't have ten freakin days off ten before the NBA finals started. So it's important, we get them another two days rest before we play game two of the same series. Certificates. Absolutely ridiculous. I guarantee you. They want this one day, if every series, went seven games this year, I think the finals, we're going to be decided on fourth of July. They're gonna lead you right into the parades, some believable. Game tonight I was ready for game two last night. I want to gain to last night. And if I been able to find anything in sports that was really compelling to fight around if it I believe, NBC sports network, is to twenty I think, on the, on the satellite. I think it's twenty two twenty one maybe I don't know. And by the time I found that it was already three nothing. And I'm like, okay, this just this is just not my night and I did not expect to start the show with boxing today. And if you're looking for insight on Andy Ruiz juniors victory last night, I'm sorry. I'm not doing what you're normal sports talk radio hosts will do though cram. They'll try to find somebody else's opinion on the internet, and they'll, they'll, they'll regurgitate it to you about how the fight went I have no idea. How Andy Ruiz junior is the heavyweight championship champion of the world this morning. And I had no idea who any Reese junior was yesterday. And that's boxing's fall. And the NHL being on. Stuck on the fact shelf of NBC. That they're airing. Dateline? And B E C and, and music shows John legend songwriting shows. And they know we will get better advertising revenue and more eyeballs on our network by voiding the NHL boxing problem. That's an NHL problem. And that is horrible. It's horrible for sports fans that it's become like that. But unless there's a palace coup in Gary Bettman gives way to somebody who can actually promote a product. I don't say I ain't ever gonna change. And for some reason, this man, just keeps just getting give a new contract. Give new contract. I'll tell you the decision Gary Bettman made. Once we were having the NHL all star game here in Atlanta. So I'm doing television and radio for the team pre pre game show post game show television radio rinkside reporter things like that. And Gary Bettman decided to. Spend all the money promoting the NHL promoting the NHL all-star game come into town with an urban radio station. Can't make it up. Not the flagship, he went with a another station. And Gary Bettman is a moron. Flat out and he's got his product on. I mean seriously. It's right next to the home shopping network. And spoiler alert home shopping network. Probably get better ratings last night. Just calling it as I said, you want to get into start the show today..

"Then I have a a New York Times article from the guy who one of the guys who started Facebook saying it's time to break up Facebook to read that later than the Gary Bettman Wikipedia page, and I have the look Wikipedia page for the noble disaster. But 'cause that promo came on before thrones on HBO, why are you asking a question because I can really tell you why I have the turnover disaster. Oh, yes. I am so confused by it. I wanna watch the miniseries HBO mini series. So that is part like why searched it, but I'm confused by how many people died because the Wikipedia page. Let me pull it up for you here in this tab says that twenty eight people died directly in the explosion and fifteen were the estimated indirect deaths up to two thousand eleven but in my head thousands of people die because of journal, and then I found I don't think I might a close tab. But I had like a vice article that was talking about like the thousands of people that died because. Of chernobyl. And I'm just very confused about Chernobyl because it was a year before I was born. So like, I don't actually have been very close to the challenger disaster. A couple of months part kinda fascinating. But but just I I'm so confused by it another thing just while we're on the topic. If you're if you watch the turnover bolt thing docking sorry mini series. They all have British accents. It really bugs me. I mean me later on. It's not a narrator to a miniseries. It's not a documentary. It's a it's a dramatic show. Oh, it's a show, and they all in the row in a Yukon. I believe it was Ukraine Ukrainian nuclear power plant. "Jim k four dot com. You've ill drive in Orleans. The other angle that that was asked about by the media is the Ottawa Senators and he had a brief scrum following. The concussion testimony and the state of the senators came up coming off the last place, finish their attendance is down. And honestly with all due respect. I expected to be down even more come the full of talked to so many season ticket holders who are like on the fence. I'm sure not sure what I wanna do like the kids. I really wanna wanna wanna support the guys I want to support the kids. It's really the whole thing with ownership. I don't know if I can get behind that. So Bettman was asked if the senators are in financial difficulty, and he said not that I'm aware of what he's asked. If there's been any suitors expressing interest in buying the team. He kind of deters way said the team is not for sale. And then he was even more animated when someone asked him if the Senate would move, no very I think that's sort of flashes back to the outdoor game when Eugene Melnyk talked quite openly. But the possibility of moving. Yeah. I don't think it's Gary Bettman certain place to comment on it at this point what the Ottawa Senators, I think the league gets involved heavily when okay, we're gonna sell it. It's up for sale. We're gonna move this Ricky, then the lease got to step in, you know, but I wouldn't even thought anything worse of Gary Bettman. He said, look, I'm not gonna comment on that. You know, the team as far as we know it's here to stay. They've had some difficulties. You know, the rules are the same for every team Steve from the from the league office. Okay. In terms of how they helped with marketing and commercials in rights fees, and and percentage of ticket sales that go to go to the league cetera cetera. So the the team itself has got to they've got to take the hit here about how how things are being marketed. You know, the can't get involved with the team because the ticket sales are way down because you've got a losing team shit like that. So I I don't look too bad Bettman for that. Do you know, I don't know that it is roll per se. It would be nice to get an update on where things really stand because it's been so much talk. And when the smoke there's fire a lot of times when there's so much discussion about where things are at all. I'm hearing this going to be a sale, and I hear this finances of this. Or that you hear enough of that? Maybe it's wishful thinking among some of the fans who just really dissatisfied with a guy that owns the team, but often, you know, there's reason that there's that much talk out there. But it seems like everything's fine for now. The one other angle that I wanted to talk about was what would it take for all these sends fans who were on the fence? And like I say anytime, I put up a Senator tweet. Because today, I said, I can't believe it's five and a half months until I get the sense play again and a second round of the playoffs and everything and all it's been too long. So I watched the sends play and the reaction to that was something along the lines of. Yeah. I'm not sure where I'm at. Now. I don't know what I'm gonna I'm season ticket holder. And so my advice to the sends right now would be three things my three pronged attack for giving. The fans are reason to believe name coach the fans have heard of and can get behind. You're stealing my fucking thing. I said that the other day, you're taking my stuff. It's what I do. That's number one. The second thing is resigned. Thomas Shibat getting a game. Sorry back to your number one. I would say getting the game buck up the three to five mil and get one of these fantastic. And that saying spend the money, but whatever it is you better sign, I think you need to get a coach that can energize the fan base. Not make them go who or not make them go may, right? The other the number to the number two is resigned. Thomas shibat? That's a guy that is part of this core. This big young core that they have moving forward because they've been some suggest it might be kind of buying time that in twenty twenty one that's we're gonna start spending to the cap. Well, if you don't get Thomas bought done ASAP, people are going to start saying, well, you say you're going to do that in twenty twenty one. But one of your crown jewels of this rebuild is still haven't signed. So hopefully, get him signed to a long term deal ASAP and that. That for the fall, I think will somewhat energize the fan base. And the last thing is ownership in terms of talking to the media needs to make it self scarce. I would I would I disagree on the media thing. What I would do is. And here's a fourth. Okay. To your three. Okay. Is you got a Jack up your front office? Okay. You gotta get your whole your president of your club. You get your hockey guys, shake, you get your hockey guys Arctic whoever the GM coach is going to be and then the, and then the assistance and all that stuff. Okay. Or we know PR Dory on we'll be the GM what they're going to do is kinda give him a hand by naming director of hockey operations. Okay. I'm talking about something different here. I'm talking in your office. Now your front office. You got to put together a team a sales team where you make this thing a huge. Point. Okay. The number one thing you gotta do is get out there and sell tickets, man. And if we have to adjust prices or something. You know, we we to come up with something here. We gotta come up with something. And the way to do that. Steve is absolutely not stay out of the media that, you know, Pat, Lafforge I and again, I go back to the others because that's that's mostly all I know. But they're certainly could sample. Pat Lafforge was the president of the team. And he was not only was in the media Lottie showed up at every charity launch. And all that stuff. And I'm not saying this sense. Don't do that. He also is on the Jumbotron during some of the games pitching six packs and two packs and. You know, all sorts of deals on on ticket, prices, etc. Game day experience. They pitched zero leader did all that here until they fired him to three years ago. Yeah. Well, then get this guy back or get the whole idea about of what he did. That's where you got to start. Right. You sound like you're getting worked up. Now. It's time for us to call it a day, James. So any final thoughts. I gotta give shadow Pete peak that come from that movie talked to impede lately, Shirley. Yeah. Very quick arm precision. I don't know where he is. He by the way, where as I don't know. Like, you got let go here from the oil. He's bar haven guides possibly back. Here is not in the conversation of any teams GM deal. I don't think so I don't think I think it went so uniquely poorly form and Edmonton. I have not heard him talked about as being a sexy candidate anywhere. Yeah, I'm biased because he was. He was a friend of my brothers. You know, my my Univer new my brother, but I had a brother who was tragically killed in the eighties, my younger, brother, but. Not to bring the show screeching halt. But they were good buddies. So I had a special place for pizza. Steve little shutout. We're getting we're getting listeners. I'm getting followers. All the way down to Newfoundland. Okay. And I love those people there they got to be the nicest people in the world. I've I've I've been going down there for gigs for years and years, and I love they immediately. You get down there. Everyone's Jimmy, by the way, they're all other names are fucking Jimmy. I our by an immediately ask you the stay at the house. And I was there. Where are you staying at a hotel here? I'm here for a week, you know for the bra. No, no fuck that. Jimmy, come stay at the house. It's no, I don't state your house. Okay. I'll tell you how nice are those Steve I went down. And I believe it was Brier and my move back in those days was the briar. Patch was huge. It's it's a pew event. Now, the the Briars growing exponentially. Anyway, I would get in there. The place would be jammed, and I would always run into groups of guys would come back year after year. You know, there's a great group of guys from the lake who came out there's guys from Berta. They would they would follow the Brier around and make it a trip, you know. And so I see these guys again, we're doing the big man, hugs. Good to see a lot of these are immediately. Go behind. The building into the office and just grab scoop out two handfuls of of beer chips. Right. And I'm fucking throwing these things around like nothing right giving people beer. So I'm giving all these guys a couple of beers. And there's a girl standing behind me by herself. Right. And so give all the lads like catcher out of the quarter Mayan ago. "For that is the league to blame for that. You know, I say, no, I say, absolutely not. And so I I agree with the same principle with some concussions with some of the concussion stuff. So well, let me examine the crux of what Gary Bettman is talking about because he is asked about well what about banning all head contact as other leagues have done lower level leagues. And his his take on it is well that would mean ultimately, there'd be no more body. Checking for the reason, we indicated earlier that you know, the larger players would inevitably land these big blows on smaller players heads in the normal course of play leading to penalties leading to suspensions, and that might be the end body checking, and I guess probably somebody on this parliamentary panel today probably thought at least I don't know if the question was asked. Why you eliminate body checking then if if that's if that's going to get rid of of people getting CT in concussions ones, just get rid of it altogether. Part of the issue is Gary Bettman, and the NHL don't really believe in the link between head shots and long term damage like C T. I don't know about that care. I'm not I'm not knowing the problem here with my argument, but Hannity. I've seen some pretty hard headshots, of course, Lindros was the most relevant one. When it started. Right. Oh my God. It's just been a laundry list of guys who've careers ended by it. Yeah. It's sort of like what you're talking about yesterday with whether refs should say sorry about bad calls. You wonder if Gary should recognize the problem, maybe a little better than that. You know? But you don't need to build Rome here. Gary, relax, right. You don't need to build Rome overnight. Let's say we're looking at it. We're aware of it. What they don't want to go through the league is what the what this class actions shit that the gotta deal with all the time. And you know, I'm I'm I'm for one who believes that the league is not totally at fault with a stuff. You can't take either can't hitting out of the game for God's sake. Would you stop being a fan if they eliminated body checking because that's that's your out? That's you're out from anything litigious happening in the future. We. We've eliminated body checking. And now it's going to be any headshots that happened. Now are going to be strictly accidental collisions for the most part. Well, I'll tell you what a lot of people might think if you take body check. There's no way I'm going to watch hockey anymore. Forget it. The thing will go for shit that no one will buy tickets or anything and it'll be destroyed the game. But Steve that being said think of overtime in a hockey game when it's three on three which I love which I absolutely love three on three. There's absolutely no hitting. There's no hitting when there's in that three on three and generally in foreign four. There's no hitting either when they when they're you got you got double minors. So I dunno. I dunno Steve when I think about that that the three hundred thing, I love it. I love his fast enough to fix up something there where the you can't keep throwing the puck back out over the blue line there. You can't take it out of your own. That's a small speed bump with this stuff. But. There's there's no hitting not deal. And it's really good hockey. It's really exciting. Now. I would be an interesting experiment. I mean, I think you get a situation. And this is a bet Manhattan is Gary Bettman said this today that. Players and fans feel that body. Checking is quote, an exciting appealing, entertaining and important part of the game. And again, I come from a world where I coached women's competitive hockey. And I think it is gonna move that way just by Moses because when the bigger guy feels like I'm gonna get suspended every time I hit a guy, which I think is the case in the NHL right now like Marc Bory Eski all he does is hit guys hard. He can see he's going in with all best intentions trying to get shoulder in the sternum area. But if a guy's not ready for it. Well that apparently is Mark board. Vietnamese fault guys got his head down. He's not looking that's board yet skis fault. And he gets the spended for it. So guys like that over time with the current situation in the NHL where their suspension happy. I think it's going to drum the head the hitting collision type stuff out of the game just on its own the NHL Commissioner also talked a little bit about the Ottawa.
